Dennis Hopper knows how to grab the attention of an audience. In the opening minutes of Out of the Blue, Hopper's hard-drinking truck driver jokes with his daughter before losing control and slamming his truck into a busload of screaming children. With the camera recording the excruciating impact from inside the cab, putting the audience helplessly in the driver's seat, the cinematic whiplash jerks the audience out of any preconceived notions of how this drama will play out. Five years later, daughter Cebe (a brilliant, brooding, angry performance by Linda Manz of Days of Heaven) has grown into a rebellious punk in a backwater town barely looked after by her flighty mom (Sharon Farrell), a well-meaning but childish junkie. When Dad is sprung from jail, Cebe's hopes of a whole, healing family poignantly and painfully prove to be doomed when a spontaneous picnic collapses into bickering and blame. Cebe desperately tries to hold everyone together as the suddenly dutiful child, singing the Elvis tune "Teddy Bear" as if her love and passion will infect her hopelessly self-absorbed parents. The film occasionally lapses into pop psychology observations, but Hopper's loose, naturalistic style and sympathetic yet critical attitude inflects the drama with a painful power that finally erupts in a devastating conclusion. --Sean Axmaker

If you're a ten-year-old girl, this sequel to Disney's 2001 hit will completely transfix you. How could it not? Bubbly Mia (Anne Hathaway), the American teenager who in the first film learned she was actually European royalty, finishes college and--whoosh!--heads off to Genovia, where he's given a closet full of fabulous clothes and jewelry in preparation to rule the kingdom under the tutelage of grandmother Julie Andrews. Throw in a horse and a volatile but innocent romantic attraction to the dreamy young stud (Chris Pine) who's also vying for the throne, and you have the kind of stuff that prepubescent girls rhapsodize about at slumber parties. Oh--and there's a slumber party here, too, featuring a bevy of cute, international young princesses mattress-surfing down a giant slide. Resistance is futile. For the rest of us, though, director Garry Marshall has managed to make his Laverne & Shirley days seem positively Shakespearean in comparison. The movie is precious, padded (two hours!), and pandering twaddle; Andrews, in her role as Queen Mother, is even shoehorned into a faux-hip-hop duet with Disney Channel favorite Raven (one of many, many grueling moments intended to sell the soundtrack). Then the film takes a maddening left turn three-quarters of the way into the plot and decides that, despite all the preceding consumption and connubial fantasies to the contrary, it's really about feminine emancipation. But don't worry--what causes you to smack your forehead in frustration will go right over the heads of its hypnotized target market. --Steve Wiecking
Description
Starring the irresistible Anne Hathaway (ELLA ENCHANTED) and Academy Award(R) winner Julie Andrews (Best Actress, MARY POPPINS, 1964), this modern-day fairy tale picks up right where THE PRINCESS DIARIES left off! As future queen of Genovia, Princess Mia (Hathaway) has everything a girl could want -- except the magical romance she's always dreamed of. But soon, Mia's shocked to discover that she needs to get married right now or her family will lose the crown! Comic complications rule the day in this delightful family story about finding out who you really are and discovering what it takes to make your dreams come true!

Princess Becomes a Princess.......2007-03-28
A wonderful, enjoyable sequel to the original Princess Diaries. The characters exhibted the same lovable qualities, i.e. they stayed in character. A marvelous rags to riches story which really brought a conclusion to the lives and loves of the characters, especially
the Queen.
2nd in series of modern fairy tale.......2007-03-19
This 2nd movie about the geek turned princess is almost as good as the first. She's 5 years older and nearly ready to take the throne of Genovia but needs a few more lessons from her grandmother the Queen. She also has to deal with the fact that before she can be Queen herself she has to marry. In 30 days. It's hilarious to watch as she tries to become more sophistocated and elegant like her grandmother and goes through suitors to find Mr. Right. Anne Hathaway is even more stunning and has some great moments. Julie Andrews is fantastic and the guys are pretty cute.
A sequel that works!.......2007-03-16
The Disney Studios still have that magic touch, with Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway how could it not? An enjoyable modern-day fairly tale perfect for tweens and the elderly.
The Prncess Diaries 2.......2007-03-09
The disc are in excellent condition. They arrived on time. I am very pleased with this purchase.
Excuse me--what century is this?.......2007-02-11
My mom likes movies that have happy endings. She doesn't care if they're dumb: they just have to fulfill her little escapist fantasies. Often I wish that I could be like that, myself; that I could just watch an idiotic, fluffy chick flick and not roll my eyes at every scene or gag at the bad writing; that I, too, could have found this movie silly but enjoyable. You see, though, I have a problem: I cannot turn off my brain. If you share my deficiency, perhaps you should read my review and take my warnings into account. If you CAN turn off your brain, well, enjoy the movie.
For the record, I haven't read the books. I tried to read a Meg Cabot novel once and gave up after about the third page of the girl going "Oooh, I'm SO INDEPENDENT AND SASSY. I am truly the heroine to root for!"
I tried to find reasons for it. I mean, I like a lot of predictable chick flicks. Heck, before my mom turned on the Princess Diaries 2 I had been rewatching the Kim Possible movie that was airing on the Disney Channel. What was different about this movie? Why was I just not getting into it? Surely, there must have been SOME reasons.
First off, I blame the romances. It wasn't a good sign when the movie wrote off Michael like a bad Mary Sue fanfic: I mean come on, only ONE line that was just "Oh, the supposed love of my life is off touring with his band. And I'm totally fine with it, because it's not like the first movie stressed that I was head-over-heels in love with him... oh, wait." I'm not going to be like the girls here who absolutely hate that he wasn't in it, because I wasn't that fond of the romance in the first movie, but I absolutely hate when sequels do that. It was like Pocahontas 2 (another terrible sequel): "Hey, guess what, John Smith? I like John Rolfe now, even though the first movie basically said that we were soul mates and completely meant for each other!" At least, though, Pocahontas 2 didn't relegate John Smith to being written off in ONE LINE. That's just sloppy writing. If I'd cared about the couple, I would probably be pretty mad.
Anyway, sorry for my tangent. The problem is that we're introduced to two new guys: hot British Guy (Andrew,) and Pretty Boy Who's Being Puppeteered by His Machiavellian Uncle But Is Actually Really Nice Deep Down (Nicholas.) Mia has no chemistry with hot British guy (possibly due to the writing, because, like David Boreanz, if the guy is cute enough he can have chemistry with ANYONE.) This is okay though, because she's not supposed to. But then there's Pretty Boy, who is supposed to make Mia realize that while her pairing with Hot British Guy is a lot more practical and useful, she needs true romance in her life. (A sidenote: Oh God, please Disney, STOP with the arranged marriage crap. Mulan 2's premise was based entirely on the notion that "Arranged Marriages are BAD even though they actually had a pretty high success rate!" And poor Mia, having to marry a cute prince of her choice! I TRULY felt for her.) The problem is, Mia had no chemistry with that guy! And let me stress something: when the plot involves Mia cheating on someone with someone else, that someone else had better be someone who, when he is with her, heats up the screen. The whole love/hate premise, too, relies on how much chemistry they have. When they were arguing, I never got the feeling "Oh, just make out already!" I'm serious. You need Monica and Richard from Friends-level chemistry, or at least something more than "He's cute so I guess I'll like him." I don't even know why Mia liked him. I never did.
Next, I blame the plot. I already got into the arranged marriage issue, but when they introduced the villain, Pretty Boy's Uncle, he says something like "You wouldn't want to lose that crown: other people may grab it." We are subtly given the message that this guy is someone on whom we should keep an eye. But then the writers, thinking that its audience is absolutely stupid, makes him add "Like me." Oh, thanks writers, I NEVER would have gotten that. So nice that you took the time to clear that up. Then there are all of these references to The Prince (no, not the guy who performed at the Super Bowl Half Time Show) just to fool those of us above the age of 11 into thinking that we were watching something remotely intelligent. Nice try, movie.
Next is the movie's fatal flaw: the happy kingdom of Genovia. First off, what the heck kind of government does Genovia have? If it's a constitutional monarchy, Mia's going to be pretty disappointed in what she can all do. If it's not, which I think it is because I sort of got that Monarchy vibe, is this not the 21st century? Is our need for princesses so great that we'll take a leaf out of Hobbes's book? And what kind of name is Genovia, anyway? Couldn't Ms. Cabot have chosen a name that didn't sound completely made up? And couldn't they at least chose one uniform accent? I think Italian would have worked; Genovia seemed more Italian than anything. Anyway, we're supposed to believe that Genovians are these happy people who just LOVE having a Queen and even better if she's a 21-year-old (that's barely even legal to drink back in the USA) foreigner whom they barely know! YAY! And servants are also happy people with no needs of their own, who will do anything to please their princess, including tap routines? Again, this is probably because of that problem of not being able to turn off my brain that I have, but what kind of message is that? Even in the 18th century people were writing about servants who were wittier and more cunning than their masters, who had more of a purpose than just to serve them. Is such a gigantic step backwards necessary just to give a young girl a happy princess fantasy?
Basically, Genovia in this movie reminded me so much of Ancien Regime France vibe that all I could do was wonder when the people would get fed up enough and the Revolution would happen. I can see it now: Princess Diaries 3: Off With Her Head! Wouldn't that make a good movie? At least it'd have a REAL plot instead of some tripe chick flick-arranged marriage nonsense. Really, I'd watch it. In fact, if you're reading this, Disney, give me a call. I truly think that I have something here. Also, with the way Mia was spending money (People are poor here? Oh, we must help them even though my closet is probably bigger than most Genovians' kitchens! And they must be orphans! Everyone LOVES orphans!) I'm not sure how long those royal funds will last.
Another issue I think is that, well, we know nothing about Genovia other than that they have a lucrative pear industry. And, the audience probably being mostly American, we're most likely not apt to buy into that patriotic royalist stuff. Honestly, even most British people that I know insult their own monarchy on a regular basis. What is the Genovian history? What has kept them so placated? Have they tried other government systems before and decided that this one worked best? Surely not all of the rulers have been Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway's deceased father; there must have been some inept and possibly tyrannical Kings and/or Queens beforehand. And surely some years there must have been some meager pear harvests, which if we take the impression from the lavicious palaces and suites in which the royalty reside, would not have hampered royal spending. Come on, even in Aladdin the people were shown as impoverished and pretty miserable while the Sultan sat in the palace playing with his toys. Must Disney shelter its audiences to the point where it's ridiculous? All we're shown in this movie as to the darker side of Genovia are orphans. Please, Disney, I'm begging you: dig a LITTLE deeper. Or at least ditch the stereotypical "eager-to-please" servants; while I know you intended them to be humorous, the portrayal was stupid and in truth maybe even a little offensive.
I won't skewer the "Girl Power" moments in the film because, honestly, they really do it to themselves. I did, however, laugh when they had Raven Simone in it. And she was singing. Every Disney show/movie MUST have Raven in it, and at some point she must sing. It's a given. I was infuriated though that she got to sing with Julie freaking Andrews. That was like Michael Bolton singing "O soave fanciulla" from La Boheme with Renee Fleming on his CD. Sad.
Anyway, like I said, if you can turn off your brain and not analyze things to death like I do, you might enjoy this movie. If you are more like me though, you should probably avoid it. Especially if someone who likes it is watching it, because at some point she'll probably kick you out of the room after one too many snarky comments.

Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. His round-the-clock routine of empty luxuries is disturbed one lonely Christmas Eve when a gun-packing punk (Don Cheadle)--perhaps an angel of mercy--responds to an altruistic gesture from Jack by giving him "a glimpse" of the life he could have had. Could have, that is, if he had married the girlfriend (Téa Leoni) he'd abandoned 13 years earlier, raised two adorable children, worked in his father-in-law's retail tire outlet, and lived happily ever after in suburban New Jersey. Thrust into this "glimpse" of the path not taken, Jack's a single-malt man in a lite-brew world, wondering if he'll ever return to his "better" life of callous wealth and solitude--or if he even wants to.
Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack's predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage's perfect match as Jack's idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie's appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It's a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A good movie for the family.......2007-06-06
This is an inspriation movie that helps you take pause in your life and consider possibility. Nicolas Cage has once again done an excellent job of taking the character and making them real. This is a movie that I share with my family and that we all enjoy and talk about. It's in my library and shall remain their for quite some time.
Truly disappointing; leaves a bad taste.......2007-03-26
This is the typical film that looks uplifting when you see it, but that when afterwards you start thinking about it, you realize how phony and manipulative it is. Here, Nicolas Cage is an arrogant yuppie businessman in Manhattan, who one day wakes up and finds himself in a paralell world, living a supposedly dreadful life in suburban New Jersey with his wife (her former girlfriend, in his previous life) and his (previously non existent) kids. The beautiful Tea Leoni, as the wife, deserved better than to be in this movie. The movie chastises the main character for not raising a family, yet the film shows family life as dreadful. The idea that Nicolas Cage had to sacrifice a family in order to get ahead in business is also phony. Most male yuppies are married; it's the women that usually have to made those sacrifices. Also, this movie is supposedly critical of heartless capitalism, yet it ends up celebrating it.
Family First - Always.......2007-03-19
"Don't screw up the best thing in your life just because you're a little unsure about who you are."
I don't know how many married guys can recall it, but I know the exact time I decided to finally take the plunge with my then-girlfriend (now my wife). It was about an hour after I watched Nicolas Cage's Family Man, a full-wonder story about a wealthy Wall Street guy, Jack, given a glimpse of the non-wealthy life he could have lived had he not gotten on a plane and be separated from his then-girlfriend almost 2 decades ago.
The transitional moments, from big-time dealer to small-time salesman, are hilarious. Used to waking up alone or with girls he just met, Jack wakes up with a wife and two kids and a dog jumping all over him. He rushes away to his sky-scraper to see his name - next to President - replaced by his junior. He tries to get into premium condo but the doorman doesn't recognize him and blocks his entrance. He struggles to change his baby son's, Josh, diapers. He has to ask his daugher, Annie, what the after-school S.O.Ps' are. He curses when his junior appears on TV shaking hands with a two corporate presidents whose merger his (ex-)company has arranged.
But then Jack learns - or discovers - the joy of loving and living in spite of financial want, in spite of the no-cushion savings, in spite of not having that suit which makes him "feel like a man" (but which requires taking out his kids' education fund). He misses his trappings of status but grows to love Kate, Annie and Josh more than anything in the world. The quote at the start, by Arnie his friend, captures Jack's seizing and holding on to a family he knows he loves without having to figure out entirely this new world he's been thrown into.
Sorrow beckons, though, when he realises he has to 'leave' this dream-like alternate reality which he started out hating but ended up cherishing. When the moment comes, it's full of dread, because he's back to his old super-wealthy but no-family life. He drives to the house belong to "him and Kate" but there's just a guy there who doesn't know any Kate. The real Kate is now a hot-shot lawyer, who's just packing up and about to transfer to Paris.
Final drama arrives when Jack rushes to the airport looking for Kate, and trying to stop her before she flies off. Remember we are already in the "real world" and Jack has stopped 'dreaming'.
He creates some commotion because Kate is already at the departure gate and about to board, and she keeps saying, "Jack, do you need closure?" which is probably what any woman would say if her boyfriend from 15 years ago, started pestering her about what "could have been". Kate then turns towards the gate and walks away. Jack is about to give up when he suddenly turns to Kate and desperately cries out to describe the alternate reality he's lived through with an alternate her:
"We have a house in Jersey. We have two kids, Annie and Josh. Annie's not much of a violin player, but she tries real hard. She's a little precocious, but that's only because she says what's on her mind. And when she smiles...
"And Josh, he has your eyes. He doesn't say much, but we know he's smart. He's always got his eyes open, he's always watching us. Sometimes you can look at him and you just know he's learning something new. It's like witnessing a miracle.
"The house is a mess but it's ours. After 122 more payments, it's going to be ours. And you, you're a non-profit lawyer. That's right, you're completely non-profit, but that doesn't seem to bother you.
"And we're in love. After 13 years of marriage we're still unbelievably in love. You won't even let me touch you until I've said it. I sing to you. Not all the time, but definitely on special occasions. We've dealt with our share of surprises and made a lot of sacrifices but we've stayed together.
"You see, you're a better person than I am. And it made me a better person to be around you. I don't know, maybe it was just all a dream. Maybe I went to bed one lonely night in December and I imagined it all. But I swear, nothing has ever felt more real.
"And if you get on that plane right now, it'll disappear forever. I know we could both go on with our lives and we'd both be fine, but I've seen what we could be like together. And I choose us."
Little did Cage & Co. know that six years later, there would be another movie with another husband, another wife and another two kids (plus another dog which looked like the dog in Family Man). This movie is also about family and getting a glimpse into a major What-If. Whilst Cage started out in a scenario he did enjoy and ended back in the same situation he later detested, the main character of this movie starts out being "tired with his life", but ends back in the same situation an entirely changed man, thoroughly grateful for the life he has (as opposed to the life he thought he had lost).
I'm talking about Adam Sandler's Click. But I won't ruin two movies at one go (smile), so I'll end with the theme which unites these two masterpieces: Family is first, the job is completely secondary. Never take for granted the ones who love you, no matter what riches beckon and no matter how attractive alternatives may appear to be.
Cute Movie.......2007-03-13
I LOVE movies and have an ever increasing, eclectic collection. This is a movie that I like to watch if I want to smile. It's a feel good movie I think, a nice family film. A man has a chance to explore one "what if" of his life, and he expereinces the ups and downs of family life. The older daughter is just the cutest and when she knows theres something different about him and assumes he's an alien and says welcome to Earth, so cute! I think the ending is a little strange but it's good that it's not a "perfect" predictable canned ending.
Swearing .......2007-03-09
With the title of family man I did not think they would put the "F" word in the movie. It would have been an excellent movie if it were swear free.

The idea is clever but the movie can't seem to pull its comic weight: Steve Martin plays a mob informer who is placed in the witness-protection program and doesn't fit into the suburban California life the Feds have picked out for him. Rick Moranis is the FBI agent assigned to protect him. Martin mugs his way through the role of an Italian wise guy from the New York streets, but his performance is never more than an impersonation. The script leaves a lot to be desired, as well. Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) brings some gloss to the production, but he can't seem to do much else with the material. --Tom Keogh

guaranteed giggles.......2006-11-16
i bought my own copy because i need it Right Now when i get the blues. steve martin's 'seduction' of carol kane is worth a whole quart of ice cream.
Funny movie........2006-05-29
This movie is great especilly when someone's turtle flows down the drain of a sink.Rated PG-13 for some language. This movie is suitble for children.
Brilliant Steve Martin vehicle! Don't miss the gangster and his nerdy FBI handler (Moranis).......2006-01-15
My Blue Heaven is a movie I enjoyed as a kid (when my parents rented it) and have introduced to many of my friends in the ensuing years. If only comedy was still this good! Despite it's PG-13 rating, this movie is truly tam(er) compared to today's top-grossing comedy titles, and it still packs laugh after laugh.
There's no need for a detailed plot summary--Steve Martin is a NY Italian mafia member turned federal witness, so he's undercover in suburban San Diego with Rick Moranis as his straight-edge FBI babysitter (the man has a system for everything, including the eating of pancakes). Martin's monologues and pontifications and brilliant excuses for his petty thefts are worth the price of admission alone. Martin's mafia-cool influence on the nerdy Moranis is also absolutely priceless, full of laughs through-and-through. Joan Cusak gives an excellent performance as the uptight local DA (complete with Army shoes) who butts heads with Martin's petty crimes again and again.
Don't miss out on one of the most underrated and delicious comedy flicks of the 1980's (okay, so it did come out in 1990, but it rings 80's comedy all throughout). The DVD is certainly priced right!
The funny sequel to GOODFELLAS.......2005-12-31
Steve Martin does an excellent work in what I believe to be his best inpersonation so far. My blue heaven could be a sequel for Goodfellas where he could portray Henry Hill (The character played by Ray Liotta) after he got in the witness protection program. This movie is hilarious and one of Steve Martin's best. One of my 10 best comedies but unfortunately largely underated.
Actually, FBI men love this film!.......2005-11-23
My Blue Heaven is Director Herb Ross' fish out of water story of a New York mafioso (Steve Martin) relocated to suburban San Diego under the watchful eye of neurotic FBI agent Rick Moranis.
Martin, a broad actor, is perfectly suited to play the flamboyant ganster trying to adapt to the whitebread wholesomeness of suburbia and Moranis' comedic talents are well-suited to the role, as he and Martin learn from one another.
The film is consistently, continuously side-splittingly funny without ever descending into bad camp. Many critics thought the depiction of mafiosi and witness relocation was over the top but I've read interviews where FBI men involved in the program say this side-splitting tale is the most realistic.
This is an upbeat, cleverly-written, and nicely edited film with a light soundtrack and some subtle dynamics.
Don't miss a chance to put this one in your collection for regular viewings!

Mickey Blue Eyes was crafted as a vehicle for the stammering British charm of Hugh Grant (star of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Nine Months), so whether or not you like the movie will depend heavily on your affection for Grant. He plays an art auctioneer who falls in love with schoolteacher Jeanne Tripplehorn (Basic Instinct, Very Bad Things), who just happens to be the daughter of mobster James Caan (The Godfather, Misery). To protect Grant, Tripplehorn tries to fend off his proposal of marriage, but some miscommunications lead to Grant being embraced by the "family." After the mob decides to launder money through Grant's auction house, an accidental killing results in Grant pretending to be Mickey Blue Eyes out of Kansas City (the sight and sound of Grant trying to say "fuggedaboudit" was undoubtedly what sold the movie in the first place). The plot isn't as well executed as it could be, but the leads are all well cast and there are some excellent supporting performances, particularly Burt Young (Rocky) as a myopic mob boss and Scott Thompson (from the comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall) as a sprightly FBI agent. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Bad.......2006-12-17
This movie is just plain bad. It never should have been released for public consumption. I honestly cannot think of one good thing to say about this movie. It makes no sense that it would have 3 1/2 stars with 39 reviews. Something fishy is going on here. Enough time wasted on this one.
A movie worth watching! .......2005-04-23
Definitely a great romantic comedy, Mickey Blue Eyes, brings to the screen the story of an Englishman working at an auction house in NYC who proposes to his girlfriend of three months only to find out that her family is part of the mob. Things become a bit more complicated when he believes that he can handle the situation...
Hugh Grant, Jeanne Tripplehorn, James Caan, and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Mickey Blue Eyes is a movie worth watching and even though it is not quite as good as Nine Months or Notting Hill, it is definitely a keeper! 4½ Stars
Nice romantic comedy........2004-03-11
This film combines romance, comedy and the Mafia quite well. Hugh Grant is romantically involved with a beautiful girl whose father (James Caan) is a NYC mob figure. She tries to hide it from him, but eventually he finds out and becomes innocently involved with her father and the mob. Enjoyable flick.
IT'S NO "ANALYZE THIS", BUT FUN ROMP THRU A DOOZY SITUATION.......2004-03-10
Witty theme, darker than you'd expect and with some dead-serious undertones (Burt Young's character, for example, is *scary* without a trace of humor) but this is totally appropriate in context and gives the movie a punch that many comedies lack. Hugh Grant's comic timing took me by surprise, as did Jeanne T's convincing rendition of a mafia don's daughter. James Caan was actually the reason I picked this DVD up and did not regret it. Very worthy spin for an evening if you like atypical comedies in general or mafia comedies in particular.
Hugh Grant Provides Lots of Light-hearted Fun !!!.......2003-04-22
Whenever I find an unfavorable review for this film it really mystifies me. This is one of my favorite comedies!! Hugh Grant does his usual excellent job since this story serves as a PERFECT vehicle for his familiar cinematic personna. There are definitely some unforgettable scenes here...I'm talking about the botched up marriage proposal of course, and who can forget the part where James Caan has to teach Grant how to talk like a gangster?! There are soooo many laughs-- never a dull moment and a great bargain for such a fun movie! If you like Grant, this DVD is a must have! If you don't, then you cannot recognize a truly charismatic performer when you see one.

Comic complications rule the day in this delightful family story about finding out who you really are and discovering what it takes to make your dreams come true!

Customer Reviews:

Bombast, Beatles, and big hair are the order of the day on Out of the Blue: Live at Wembley, a 1978 show by Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra at that fabled London arena. This was a charity event with a couple of Royals in attendance, not to mention actor (and renowned music authority) Tony Curtis, who introduces the band as "the most outstanding rock group in the world today." In their dreams, maybe. Still, ELO managed to thrive in an era when the punk movement was obliterating many "dinosaur" bands of their ilk, with a string of hits and a flashy, entertaining stage show (the spaceship set is a trip), all on display throughout this hour-long performance. They cram a full thirteen tunes into that time, focusing on Out of the Blue, a double vinyl album which included the undeniably catchy hits "Turn to Stone" and "Sweet Talkin' Woman"; we also get "Telephone Line," "Showdown," "Do Ya," and an extended "Roll Over Beethoven" to close the show. It's no coincidence that Lynne, who wrote, sang, and produced ELO's material, would go on to produce George Harrison's Cloud Nine and later preside over the mid-'90s reunion that saw Harrison, Ringo Starr, and Paul McCartney complete two "new" John Lennon songs. Lynne and his band were unabashed Beatlemaniacs, and mixed in with their rock-cum-pseudo-classical sound was the almost constant influence of the Fabs ("Mr. Blue Sky," to name just one, bears more than a passing resemblance to the McCartney-penned middle section of "A Day in the Life"). Of course, echoing the Beatles is neither an uncommon nor a bad thing, and Out of the Blue: Live at Wembley, which features digitally remastered sound, is good, dumb fun. The DVD package includes a too-small reproduction of the original tour program. --Sam Graham

Nostalgiac and Very Good.......2007-05-09
I remember seeing this concert on TV in 1978. It was exciting to me because ELO was my favorite Rock Group at the time.I had just recently discovered them from their "New World Record" album, (which my Brother had bought). I thought it was Great. Then came "Out Of The Blue". Which I thought was equally Great, though quite different. So to see them on TV for my first time was pretty cool. I didn't see it again until I bought this DVD in January 2007. I did buy the cd a few years ago and I was disapponted with the poor sound quality. But this DVD sounds very good. So to watch it again was very nostalgiac and to listen to it with a high quality sound system is very entertaining. ELO is still my favorite Rock Group and I highly recommend this DVD.
Good for funs.......2007-03-15
Sound and video quality is not perfect. However it can be excused that it was recorded so long ago. Nevertheless it is pleasure for ELO funs to have this concert in DVD
BIG DRUMS, A TOTAL ELO AUDIO EXPERIENCE. OUT OF THE BLUE 1978....................2007-02-08
The Zoom dvd performance is more tighter, but I like "Out Of The Blue" because seven of the original 1970s Elo Members are performing live. Above all this performance kept those big drums in play, as they are clearly not heard on "Zoom". The picture quality is faded but a beautiful remastering job never the less. The theatre system sound options include DTS, Dolby 5.1, and the ear shattering PCM Stereo. If you watch "Out Of The Blue" on your theatre system you will feel like your at the concert circa 1978. 13 songs of pure Elo madness. This was really a well performed show. A true 1970s trip. This dvd is a must have, and must be watched and heard on a theatre sytem to feel, and really understand the true audio remastering of this dvd release. THE PCM AND DTS OPTIONS ARE AN AUDIO MARVEL THAT MUST BE HEARD ON A THEATRE SYSTEM..............................
OF COURSE YOUR SEVEN ELO MUSICIANS WHO MADE THIS DVD A MUST HAVE........

A wonderful trip down memory lane.......2007-01-12
The audio is great, the video looks good even after 30 years. This is a must have for any ELO fan!
Finally it's done right!.......2006-12-13
About 20 years ago, I decided to rent the ELO Live at Wembley VHS to which my girlfriend at the time said, "Oh, they lip-synched..." Her proclamation seemed confirmed as I watched Jeff and the boys appear to sync to the studio versions. Why were the crowd so crazy about them? Why would Bev flail at his drumkit with such abandon if he were not, in fact, playing for the audience? I was crushed, and I had a difficult time reconciling those who I considered professional musicians of integrity with folks like Milli Vanilli, etc. -- considering that, the Wembley VHS was a horrible ambassador for ELO as a live band.
This reissue DVD fully clears the band's reputation: They weren't frauds who faked their way through concerts! The original sound has been restored, no dubbing with the studio recordings and the band showed an amazing amount of confidence, power and energy. The band is not as tight as the 2001 Zoom edition, but the 31 year old Jeff Lynne was a lot more energetic that the 54 year old edition. My only regrets are the focus on the Out of the Blue album (that they were supporting) so you don't get too many classic songs from the back catalog, and a poor encore rendition of "Livin' Thing" which sounded insufficiently rehearsed. However, "Do Ya" and some of the older songs sound absolutely awesome. Anyway, I quite enjoyed the concert, and if you ever witnessed the sacrilege of the old Wembley editions, give this one a look. Nice packaging as well!

Pecker (so named, at least according to his grandmother, because he always pecks at his food) loves to use the camera to capture his fellow Baltimore residents living their daily lives. Of course, since this is a John Waters movie, those daily lives include visits to strip bars, shoplifting, and various other quirky, and frequently hilarious, human activities. When Pecker's makeshift photo exhibit comes to the attention of a New York art agent (Lili Taylor), Pecker becomes the latest sensation. Unlike the hero in most sudden-fame stories, however, Pecker, as played by Edward Furlong, isn't exactly an innocent; rather, he takes in the world with his eyes, and his mind, wide open. So instead of suffering a precipitous fall, Pecker eventually turns the tables on his more worldly New York peers.
While not as outrageous as early Waters features such as Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, Pecker still has something to offend just about everyone. But those who take the offenses to heart would be missing out on what amounts to a sweet-natured farce. The movie is not so much a pointed satire as a gentle teasing of the art world and its pretensions. The all-embracing world of John Waters allows for lovable freaks from the big city, too.
The movie sags a bit when it settles into its plot; it can't sustain the comic inspiration reached in the opening scenes of Pecker's encounters with Baltimore's misfits. But running gags about a sugar-addicted child and a ventriloquist-doll Virgin Mary are hilarious. What ultimately makes the movie such a pleasure, though, is Waters's genuine fondness for all of his characters. Aided by a charming cast, including Christina Ricci and Waters regulars Mink Stole and Patty Hearst, Waters has created a surprisingly touching ode to human eccentricity. --Chris Neman
Customer Reviews:
Interesting profile and perspective on Baltimore and the NYC art scene.......2007-01-18
John Waters portrays the absurd elements of everyday life in his beloved hometown of Baltimore with such relish that it actually makes me want to visit. The highlight of the film is Pecker's grandmother who has a "speaking" Virgin Mary and his older sister who works in a gay stripclub. The NYC art scene is portrayed as cold, calculating and a bit of a leech to Pecker's fresh-faced and unassuming talent, though Christina Ricci's girlfriend character was a bit annoying in her constant complaints against the latter city while extolling the virtue of Baltimore. This is not one of John Waters' best (those would be primarily in the 1970s) but is recommended for anyone interested in Baltimore and an outsider's view of the art scene.
Outrageous, but full of good will.......2007-01-09
This is the movie that redeemed John Waters for me. It's laugh-out-loud funny, totally outrageous, but full of good will and human kindness. It skewers the New York art establishmant most delightfully and casts an affectionate eye on Baltimore and its denizens. An absolute delight!
Very Funny.......2006-08-10
Out of the three John Waters films I've seen (Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom, and this film...In that order), this is definitely my favorite. It's probably Waters most normal film (and even this film has some weird moments);
It's got a great cast, the dialogue is funny, and some of the events play like some weird farce on real life. Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) plays Pecker, a young kid who snaps pictures of everything around him. Graffiti'd walls,
fat women, girls on a bus, a man getting his hat stolen, pubic hair...You name it, he takes a picture of it. Eventually Pecker's photos get noticed by Rorey (Lili Taylor, 'I Shot Andy Warhol') who puts his photos in a gallery to mass acclaim. Eventually, it takes a toll on Pecker's life and everything spirals out of control...In typical John Waters fashion. The movie's plot is pretty simple, but it's hilarious. Example; Pecker's sister Crissy is a sugar crazed brat. A Child Protective Services worker shows up at the house and prescribes Rittalin, which instantly changes her behavior. The way I'm explaining it doesn't sound very funny at all, but if you've had any experience with ADHD...Then you'll get a laugh out of that. Christina Ricci co-stars as Shelley, Pecker's girlfriend who runs a fascist laundromat. I've always liked Ricci as an actress, but her looks kind of come and go in films. She'll look great in one film and then like crap in another. In the movie "The Ice Storm" which came out around the same time as this, she didn't look that great. Here, she looks awesome. Really hot and she adds some fresh bits of sarcasm to the film as well. Am I the only one who thinks Waters could've splurged on a nude scene here. Anyway, as with all Waters films, this movie will not be enjoyed by everybody. However, this film is done in a different style then the other two films I've mentioned...So even if you have no idea who Waters is, this movie isn't something you run and tell your friends about (Pink Flamingos anybody?). It's damn funny, entertaining, and witty.
GRADE: A-
One of my favorite John Waters films.......2006-08-01
Pecker is a true gem for those who like their movies off the beaten path. And when you watch a John Waters movie, that's exactly what you expect. Pecker delivers on that and then some. To me, this ties with Waters' film Serial Mom for his best in my eyes. Pecker (Edward Furlong) has the gift of being able to capture life in a unique way with his photos. He takes pictures of his family and various people going about their lives in Baltimore with his 35 milimeter camera he got at his mom's thrift store. Pecker's family is quite unusual and makes for great photo opportunities. His sugar-addicted little sister, little Chrissy, is perhaps one of my favorites. Or Me-Ma-Ma, his grandmother, and her "talking" Virgin Mary doll. Pecker also has a girlfriend (the always great Christina Ricci) named Shelly who runs the Spin N'Grin laundromat, a sister (Martha Plimpton) who works at a gay bar, a mom who can dress you for under a dollar at her thrift store and a father who's woes include the strip bar across the street running his bar out of business. But what's commonplace for these Baltimore residents is extraordinary to an art dealer named Rorey (Lili Taylor) who discovers Pecker and his pictures while he's showcasing them at the sub shop he works at. Suddenly, Pecker is a star and all of New York is clamoring for his work, thanks to Rorey's exposure, but it soon brings about consequences for Pecker. Part of the fun in this, aside from enjoying all the unusual characters, is seeing what happens next. Pecker is a phenomenal movie and there really should be more movies like this. For those that don't get the humor in dark comedies, you might want to stick to those Julia Roberts movies. For me, any day could be a day to watch Pecker. Absolutely positively recommended!
Very Entertaining.......2006-05-06
This movies is funny, fast moving and you can't guess what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed it and thing that you will too. A movie made outside the box.

Customer Reviews:
Hugely Disappointing.......2006-07-06
Expecting sexy camp in the tradition of "Beyond Valley of the Dolls" I was really looking forward to seeing this film. Instead I struggled through this tedious, repetitive, and confusing mess of a film. I respect what the director was trying to create, but the end product is nearly unwatchable. It's starts out so well too.... "I tried not to remember why I buried my trumpet." ...but then it quickly dives into a psychosexual pseudo-sado-vampire ghost story that isn't the least bit sexy or interesting. I know this film has a sizeable cult following. It is pretty to look at (sometimes when it isn't in grainy slow-motion) but I just couldn't make it through. Maybe it's worth a look, but I personally wish I had rented it.
"A young beautiful stranger washed on to our friendly shores with only death as a companion".......2006-04-04
Found this while I was browsing the cult cinema section. Never heard of it before. Never seen a Jess Franco film that I can recall. Figured any movie that shares a name with a song from the first Velvet Underground album was worth a look. Am I glad I didn't buy "Freaks" instead? As Larry Flynt might say, "You bet your sweet ass!" What a psychadelic trip, and another notch in my quest to watch every weird movie made between 1959 and 1979. What's the story, morning glory? A jazz trumpter finds a dead girl washed up on the beaches of Istanbul. He seems to remember some strange goings on involving her at a party he played at. Freaked out by the experience, he runs off to Rio de Janeiro, and falls in with a foxy singer named Rita. One night while he plays an engagement, the dead girl walks through the door. And of course he follows, as do we. Nothing seems to make any sense. Another figure from the Istanbul scene arrive in Rio, a redhead named Olga who favors wearing a fur coat topless. What does all of this have to do with a mysterious fakir who lives in the palace of a fallen sultan and an art dealer? Our trumpeteer, Jimmy, eventually returns to Istanbul, but the answers he finds aren't exactly the ones he expects. The score is haunting, the imagery and colors a feast for the eyes. An added interview with director Franco, who reveals the inspirations behind the script, is just the delicate frosting on a multi-layered cake. The crystal ball says more Franco films in my future. This one should be in yours.
franco in furs .......2006-03-15
Venus in Furs, by Jess Franco, is a wonderful time capsule to a jet-set, jazz world of night clubs, parties, hedonism, and morbidity. Shot in a lurid, psychedelic style, Venus in Furs has indy/underground stamped on it with a vengeance. Maverick filmmaker Franco goes to Ken Russell-like excess with an almost documentary approach to a story that will make M. Night Shamalyn fans re-think their opinions about their hero's originality. Made in the days when Franco was at his hottest, this must have torn heads wide open in it's day. As a side note; the sound track( featuring Franco on horn, at times )may never leave your mind. This film is for admirers of The Frightened Woman, Succubus, Blow Up, and Baba Yaga.
Visually interesting, OK, true........2005-12-15
As far as acting, story line, directing, casting, and sexiness, it's a dud. Another ultra-hyped mediocrity. Enjoyable to a degree for just how incomprehensible it is.
Psychedelic cinema at its best.......2005-06-13
Legendary cult director Jess Franco has made a staggering amount of films in his career, and regardless of how non-existent the budget or incoherent the narrative is, nearly all of his pre-1980 work is at the very least interesting, and in many cases, fascinating. Jess Franco always provides us with sensuous eye candy and a great soundtrack, but in the case of "Venus in Furs", he goes far beyond that and creates a film that is more than just a great exploitation film - it's a great film period.
Along with his two other masterworks, "Vampyros Lesbos", and "She Killed in Ecstacy", this is one of the few Franco films that has not only a strong story idea to start with, but a solid and well paced narrative to carry it along. The film benefits enormously by a great cast, anchored by leading man James Darren, who turns in a low-keyed, solid performance that is reminiscent of something you might see in a Hitchcock or early Brian Depalma film. Maria Rohm is as sensuous and captivating as ever, and both the lucious Barbara Lee and the sultry Barbara McNair round out what might be one of the best trio of "Franco women" ever cast together in one of his films. Also on hand is Franco/Euro-horror regular Klaus Kinski. He is solid as usual.
It goes without saying that the movie looks great (given the age of the film, the transfer is superb), and is loaded with erotic imagery, but Franco outdoes himself here. The score by Manford Mann and Mike Hugg is outstanding and goes a long way toward creating the film's hypnotic atmosphere. This is a movie that Franco buffs and fans of Euro exploitation will simply love. Even non-Franco film buffs who enjoyed the likes of "Jacobs Ladder", and Mary Lambert's "Siesta", also might want to check it out.

Australian writer-director Rolf De Heer's 1993 semi-comic satire, Bad Boy Bubby, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for its sometimes savage vision of a modern society in which a Kaspar Hauser-like figure suddenly appears. Nicholas Hope is masterful as 35-year-old Bubby, who has been shut within his corpulent mother's airless apartment all his life, enduring sexual exploitation and mom's lies about the outside world being poisonous. When Bubby's estranged father turns up, the boy-man seizes an opportunity to flee, and embarks on a dark journey to encounter the unknown. De Heer keeps his innocent hero moving from situation to situation, like a great blank slate (think of Peter Sellers in Being There) absorbing and repeating whatever he sees and hears. Meanwhile, the people who meet him perceive exactly what they want to perceive. De Heer may be on a Swiftian mission to underscore humanity's corruption, but Hope is brilliant at the more subtle job of constructing, using few tools, Bubby's increasingly complex inner life. --Tom Keogh

Bad Boy Bubby is one of the finest feel good movies ive ever seen. Bubby's joyous comedic romp through life makes us all sit back and say "hey, lets live a little!!" boy, i laughed so much my sides nearly split. a real hoot!
Not Quite Like Anything You've Ever Seen.......2007-01-10
I saw this DVD years ago during a trip to England, long before it made its way to this side of the pond. This is not like anything you've ever seen and is deeply worthy of the cult status it has around the world. Your jaw will drop in the first minutes of the film and not make its way back closed until long after it's over. And it will be a ride straight through. It's incredible and audacious (as are all of Aussie Rolf de Heer's works). Its sharply funny, deeply disturbing and a great piece of filmmaking. Watch it, but not on a first date!
