Shortly before Antonio's (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) marriage to Carmen (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), he finds a photograph of her with another man. This unexpected discovery sends him spiraling into jealousy, and he begins asking questions about Carmen's past. He questions the friend who introduced them in the first place, and also interrogates Carmen's best friend, Cinta (Maria Botto). Carmen is beautiful, kind, and loving. Everyone in Antonio's circle tells him he's being foolish to worry about Carmen's past. After all, what does it matter?

Antonio, however, will not be deterred, and it doesn't help that he's told conflicting stories about the mystery man--a migrant worker named Juan. Meanwhile, Cinta juggles relationships with her middle-aged employer--a dour widower--with Antonio's best friend. Antonio interprets Cinta's fickle behaviour of evidence that "in this world, everything is second hand." Jealousy eats away at Antonio's soul, and the more information he gathers, the more insatiable his appetite becomes to know every detail. He morphs from being a happy man in love to being bitterly obsessed. When one acquaintance asks what Antonio is seeking, another replies "his own downfall."

"Jealousy" ("Celos") from director Vicente Aranda examines how the corrosive results of jealousy affect the relationship of Carmen and Antonio. Tension and a feeling of foreboding build steadily as the story develops. Some clever unexpected plot twists raise this film above predictability and cliches, and instead, Antonio's journey to the truth proves to be riveting, and quite unexpected.
