4 out of 5 stars That Robot Just Ate Your Dog..........2004-05-29

This is probably the first time that an anime series has inspired me to watch the original film. Zeiram, the animation is actually a prequel to this film in which director Keita Amemiya tells the story of bounty hunter Iria's origins. Zeiram and Zeiram 2 occur later and are reprises of Iria's running battles with the cyborg-like Zeiram - robots powered by weird creatures that look like Noh masks and will eat anything including your dog.

In Zeiram 2, Iria and her 'assistant' Fujikuro are tracking down an ancient artifact called the Carmarite. Fujikuro betrays Iria knocks out her faithful computer friend Bob, leaving her facing some 50 combatants with only the help of an experimental cyborg helper who looks an awful lot like - you guessed it - Zeiram. After literally mowing down the bad guys, Zeiram goes out of control (bad programming, of course). Also involved are two of Iria's old friend, Kiyama and Tepphei, who are the Abbott and Costello of the electronic repair business.

What follows is the kind of delightful silliness that Amemiya is noted for - a hectic action plot that is full of comic crises and heroic stunts. Everyone, including Zeiram, get to ham it up with Power Ranger class stunts as the action shifts from temple to factory to shrine with impunity. If all you have seen before this film is the animation, which has a much more serious plot, it will take you a while to realize that all this vaudeville is intentional rather than bad acting.

Special effects, costumes, and sets are truly imaginative, reminiscent of Escher and Giger. The Zeiram cyborg in particular has as many tricks as a Swiss army knife. The truth is that the film is well crafted, even though its unconscionable silliness frequently obscures Amemiya's better moments. Zeiram 2 is purely a confection, it's hard not to like as long as you are careful not to take it seriously.

3 out of 5 stars It's Fun.......2002-10-12

This is the sequel to the live action "Zeiram" (or "Zeram"). The special effects, fights, and costumes are better than the last movie, but the plot and characters (or lack of both) are kind of a let-down.

Now when comparing both live action "Zeiram" movies to the anime "Iria: Zeiram the Animation" I find the live action severely lacking in just about everything possible. Iria's reason's for going after Zeiram in the live action are reduced to money and survival, the whole revenge thing from the anime is left out. Fujikuro is turned into nothing but a bumbling, double-crossing kid. Also left out are Iria's computer partner Bob's origins, multiple characters, and any other planets besides Earth (Earth wasn't even in the anime).

However, the live action movies do have a plus side. Zeiram looks [good], especially in the first movie. And you can watch them half asleep and not miss much of a plot.

If you like live action movies like "Hakaider" and shows like "Kikaida" and the other Japanese hero series, go and get (buy/rent whatever) "Zeiram". If you like it, then get "Zeiram 2". Otherwise, you'll probably be let down.

3 out of 5 stars silly but still entertaining.......2002-06-23

For those of you who remember watching "Iria: Zeriam the animation" anime... LOOK OUT! for the sequal is here! and oddly enough... it's live action!

I leaped at the oppertunity to see this simply because i knew it was going to be bad. If you're expecting the same kind of action and plot from the anime, don't, cuz this is totally different.

Iria and Fujikuro have been staying on earth collecting bounty. When Iria is sent off to bring back a robot Zeriam assistant, Fujikuro destroys her transport system only to discover she took the item which would have given him good money. SO he hijacks a friend of iria's and goes searching for her to steal it. Meanwhile the robot Zeriam goes haywire and starts assasinating everything in site. Now iria, Fujikuro, a groom and an electritian have to defeat Zeriam before he closes a ZONE and obliterates them all. Sound confusing yet? it gets better!

Now the acting isn't the highlight of the film, nor is the action (several times you can see the string holding them in the air). But what i was really amazed at was how they build suspence. The writers obviously knew what they were doing because the movie just builds and builds with problems. And when you think you've overcome ONE problem 4 more arise to take it's place. Despite the little budget, this movie does have a certain appeal to it. The directors even got around the special fx here and there and instead of having explosions and rapid scene cuts, we actually get a chance to watch the characters be themselves. Good rest points to the action to soon ensue.

If you don't care about cheezy special FX and don't mind rubber monster costumes then this is a good movie for you. If not, go buy the anime and be happy. For the rest of you, ENJOY!

2 out of 5 stars not worth watching.......2001-10-26

I liked the original.. The script was better and the acting was more realistic.. Zeiram II is better in the sense of special effects but the story line and characters are lacking... In fact, at one point, I thought it was the PowerRangers all over again... All in all, I would purchase this movie ONLY as a last resort... or if you wanted to support live ANIME funding.... Otherwise, stick with the ANIME version....

5 out of 5 stars Noh Theatre Monster.......2001-09-01

Zeiram 2 is the sequel to Zeram, (I don't know why "i" was dropped in the Fox Lorber release of the original, but "Zeiram" is the correct transliteration of the Japanese spelling of the title monster's name) a low-budget, charming science fiction/monster-in-the-rubber suit film directed by Amamiya Keita and starring supercool Moriyama Yuko. Endowed with a slightly bigger budget, the sequel is even more of a delirious fun. Moriyama returns, of course, and so does Zeiram, now wrapped in layers of body armor and heavy artillery.

I have to say Zeiram is a great monster. Its design is obviously inspired by noh theatre aesthetics, including the ultra-creepy, pasty, rouge-lipped noh mask face attached to a long, snakelike neck that serves as a feeding mechanism. This part of Zeiram devours chunks of whatever organic creature it encounters and manufactures a "capsule monster" out of its genetic material: shades of Ultra Seven! Every time Zeiram makes appearance it is accompanied in the soundtrack by rumbling male chorus and percussion, as if it is a supernatural presence in a noh play. The relationship between two bumbling electricians and Iria, the rogue investigator and arch-enemy to Zeiram, is also highly unusual in a science fiction setting, in that it is a genuine friendship (between male and female) developed from mutual admiration for each others' abilities and resourcefulness. Although these two guys, Kamiya and Teppei, are inserted in the series as kyogen (comic noh) figures, here they get to reveal different shades of their characters. All these human dimensions are completely missing in the anime version. (Who (...)needs to know about Iria's brother?)

Media Blaster's DVD transfer is generally good. I suspect that the source material was Japanese laserdisc, which tends to have little depth in black levels, so the resolution does suffer a bit during nighttime sequences in the last 10 minutes of the movie. You may have to adjust brightness and contrast levels of your TV set to get the best picture. However, no compression noise or artifact problems seem to be present, at least overtly noticeable ones. Subtitles are much better than usual, and English dubbing is pretty well done as well. Far superior to the original Fox Lorber edition on this count. However, it is disappointing that the "Making of Zeiram 2" featurette, a very enjoyable and personable account of low-budget science fiction filmmaking, is not available as an extra. It came free with the Japanese VHS, never mind laserdisc! Don't stint on the extras please!

"You can't kill the boogeyman," explains John Carpenter in Halloween, and to prove it he brings Michael Myers back in this handsome but grisly sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasence runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill, and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count and some strange tales about the Druids and pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars "You don't know what death is!".......2007-06-26

I Think this film is a fantastic sequel. Picking up exactly where the first left off was a great idea, although obvious. To me Jamie lee's performance of an emotionally and physically drained Lauire was the perfect touch. This is a time where Jamie Lee Curtis still needed what a Halloween film could do, unlike H20 where the franchise needed her.Donald Pleasence is even better the second time around taking little guff from anyone.

4 out of 5 stars MORE OF THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME!!!!.......2007-06-18

Halloween 2 takes place right after the original and michael's sister laurie strode is taken to the hospital. Michael is again on the loose and killing anyone who gets in the way of killing his sister.

I think halloween 2 is one of the best in the series. It follows right up with the original and has a very shcoking twist. However alot of people think john carpenter directed this movie but he did not. He was the producer along with debra hill. I think if john would have direted it also it would have been a better film. I feel times that it gets very boring and lightens on the suspense. Another thing is the charachters. This and resurection are the only movie that dont have good charachters. it is erelevent that those to movies are directed by the same guy. But overall halloween 2 is a great addition to the series and i recommened picking it up.

2 out of 5 stars The Halloween series went from brilliant to average/mediocre in just one movie.......2007-04-18

Spoiler Alert!!!

What's revealed in Halloween 2 (that Michael's been going after his sister all along) is perhaps a creative spin that no one saw coming. But the problem with this is that Michael is a far less scary figure because he's not a psycho (well at least not as big a psycho) as we orginally thought because he's not randomly killing people. I liked the original because Jamie Lee Cutis is someone you can relate to because she could represent anyone of us. But this movie turns her from "anyone of us" to just his sister. It unknowingly hints that as long as you are not Michael's sister or are near his sister, you are safe. I don't want to completely bash this film because there is some action and it is in some respects a guilty pleasure. Maybe worth a rent but try not to take it too seriously.

The original was, more or less, a perfect atmospheric film with a flawless ending (how most horror films should end) and is the only one truly worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars More of the night HE came home.......2007-03-22

Halloween 2 continues the Halloween saga. Michael Myers is still on the loose in Haddonfield on that same Halloween night. Laurie Strode is left cowering in the hospital, and Dr. Loomis is trying his best to hunt down Michael Myers, and kill him forever. But Michael learns that Laurie is in the hospital and follows her there, killing everyone who gets in his way.

Halloween 2 is one of the best horror sequals of all time. It takes place on the same night as Halloween 1, and is just as scary. This exciting and fun to watch sequal will scare everyone. Halloween 2: The nightmare isn't over.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL.......2007-03-21

The first Halloween is a classic. "Halloween II" starts off right where the other film stops. The DVD transfer is good, but a special edition would be appreciated by fans of the series.

This is probably Barbara Edens best movie. She's not famous for great movies, but this is my favorite, because she looks HOT! If you like her as Jeannie, as I do, you will like her in The Woman Hunter. She still looks like Jeannie in this one, and we get to see her in several sexy outfits, including a bikini, navel and all!! Very Hot! Oh, the movie is OK, too. Kind of a, Who is the Killer, murder mystery type. But the only reason to get the movie is, The Sexy Barbara Eden!! You won't be sorry. She's HOT!!

4 out of 5 stars Better than it should be.......2004-04-13

The Initiation should be a horrible movie, but for some reason it isn't. The whole is better than the parts. We have all the stereotypes, we have college kids, angst-ridden wealthy kids, recurring nightmares, and big fat flopping red herrings. There's also some pretty borderline acting, even from people you have actually heard of.

So why four stars? The movie just works for some reason. Somehow the blantant red herrings, in-your-face clues, etc still leave you surprised when the "shocking" twist ending is revealed. Or, maybe I am just an idiot... but all the people I have watched it with never saw it coming either.

Half of the movie takes place in a huuuuuge mall at night. The mall provides endless hiding spaces for the killer (or killers?) to wait and pounce from. The gore effects are really top notch. The attacks come quickly and viciously and look quite real. Even though the mall is huge, there is a claustrophobic feel since the principle characters are locked in without a real way of getting away from their attacker.

Veteran actors Clu Gulager and Vera Miles add some weight to the light, early career performances of Daphne Zuniga (Spaceballs, The Sure Thing, Melrose Place), Hunter Tylo (The Bold and the Beautiful), and brief talkshow host Marilyn Kagan.

The DVD I bought was the Initiation-only version whose only feature was a theatrical trailer. There is now a double-feature DVD that contains The Initiation AND The Mountaintop Motel Massacre. I haven't seen that movie, but you might as well buy it instead and get an extra movie out of the deal. You certainly won't be sacrificing any special features. But, again, this movie is good. There are lots of things to pick it apart over, but as a whole, it delivers.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Flick Overall.......2003-07-05

The Initiation is very slow and dreadful movie. The first 40 minutes are wasted with flashbacks and talking but the end in the shopping mall is decently done. The ending plot twist was a nice surpise but other than that this movie is strictly rental material.

2 out of 5 stars Initiation.......2003-06-10

1980's teen-slasher flick that is pretty ordinary fare. The only novelty values in this film are a young pre-fame Daphne Zuniga (Melrose Place) and a young pre-fame Hunter Tylo (The Bold and the Beautiful). While the film is probabaly a forgotten past on the ladder up for both ladies it is Hunter Tylo who now campaigns for christian values who desperately tries to forget the film more.Hunter has the all-important vital role of - The pretty girl who takes off all her clothes in front of the cameraman takes a shower in front of him and then gets out and dries herself in front of him just in case the eager teen male moviegoer missed her completely nude body the first times around - .Oh the joy of hollywood!!

2 out of 5 stars cheesey.......2003-04-01

I got this because I'm a big fan of Hunter Tylo and Daphne Zuniga. Hunter Tylo looks completely different (did she have surgery?) so it's fun and camp to see her here. If you like B grade stuff, this is for you!

2 out of 5 stars Dull beginning, pretty entertaining second half........2002-09-10

The Initiation is another one of those sorority-type slasher films where a group of girls are offed one-by-one by a deranged killer. The catch in this one is that it's set in a huge department store. Fun times? You bet, well, at least once they get into that store. Before that, this one's a snoozer.

The opening does set up an intriguing premise, with Daphne Zuniga constantly having a dream in which she's a young child watching her father fighting another man. After that, the film bogs down quite a bit with repetitive hypnosis scenes, and at least one of the twists involving her dreams is entirely predictable, so for the first half, the film hasn't done much at all.

But then, cut to the second half, once the girls break into the department store, and are knocked off one-by-one by the killer, and the film suddenly turns from sluggish to suspenseful. The kill scenes are built up quite well with plenty of blood, there are a few good jump-in-your-seat shocks, and it's nice to see I couldn't quite guess who would die in what order. The huge mall works extremely well in the movie's favor, making for a fairly complex setting in which the killer could be hiding anywhere.

There are even two scenes of gratuitous nudity, provided by none other than goregous soap star Hunter Tylo (credited here as Deborah Morehart), who happens to look even hotter now then she did 18 years ago! Unfortunately, the film stars Daphne Zuniga, who makes for a very flat heroine. I've heard many describe her as a talented actress, but I just don't see it. The rest of the performances are pretty standard, not even Vera Miles or Clu Gulager stand out.

The big plot twist at the end is pretty ludicrous, but I happen to like absurd twists in slashers (to an extent and depending on the situation), and at least it ties in believably with the opening. Had the rest of the film been as entertaining as the last thirty-five or so minutes, The Initiation would have been one truly nifty little slasher. As it is, the film is simply middling.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story.......2006-04-08

Woman Wanted is the story of love and the need for reconciliation and understanding between a father and son and the woman who is the catalyst to that end. All three of the main characters share a need to come to terms with the pain in their lives and move on to functionality on their own terms. The story is beautifully told through terrific acting and the patient pacing of the film which creates a pensive mood allowing the viewer time to absorb and process the interrelationships of the characters and connect on a personal level. I cried from about mid way through to the end as the characters continued to discover each other and change their perspectives. Be sure to get this film on VHS. The DVD is cut shorter and leaves out some really good material.

5 out of 5 stars Barbara At Her Sexiest.......2003-09-27

An enjoyable TV movie from 1972 which gives Barbara Eden a chance to show her curves as well as her acting talent. She is well supported by Robert Vaughn and Stuart Whitman and the locations are also easy on the eye. The DVD print is excellent and the cover art really captures the essence of the film.
Although only a mere 70 minutes in length, it is still an entertaining story.

5 out of 5 stars unstoppable Barbara.......2002-12-04

this film is terrific to the end,Barbara Eden gives 100% in everything she does.

4 out of 5 stars For Barbara Eden Fans Only!.......2000-05-10

Barbara Eden plays a wealthy--but mentally unstable--woman who suspects that a man is a jewel thief and killer, but nobody will believe her! Finally! I had been looking for a copy of this movie for a long time! I remember watching it in reruns sometime during the mid 1980s on my local station's afternoon movie. I'm so glad that its finally available. This is one of Barbara Eden's first TV movies after "I Dream of Jeannie" was cancelled. If your a fan of Barbara Eden, and have seen every episode of "Jeannie" a dozen times or so, like I have, then this is the tape for you! Barbara is one hot mama parading around beautiful scenic Mexico in a variety of skimpy bare midriff outfits that showcase her dynamic figure. There is also a great scene of Barbara struttin' her stuff on the dance floor. This movie also gives Barbara a chance to show off her dramatic skills as well. I found her character, Dina, to be distant and aloof at times, yet always seductive--not at all like her ditzy Jeannie role. A good departure for her. I guess this is what you would call a "star-vehicle." Non-fans of Barbara will probably be bored watching this tape. The story is your typical slow-moving 70s tv movie with the obligatory climax before each commercial break, and doesn't pick up speed until the last third of the movie. However, the ending did surprise me I must say. This is (was) a hard to find TV movie. A must have for every Barbara Eden fan! (...)I recently picked up a dvd copy of this film and the print is much more crisp and clean than my old vhs version!

3 out of 5 stars We love Barbara, but this isn't her greatest movie........1999-11-08

As a huge Barbara Eden/Jeannie fan I was disappointed with thequality of this movie. The plot is predictable and the film is barelyover an hour long - which turned out to be a good thing. If all you want to see is Barbara prancing around in a thousand outfits that bare her mid-section then buy this movie. For the true fan, I recommend you buy her other movies. Even the five minutes she's on screen in "From the Terrace" was better than this. "Ride the Wild Surf" is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED JEANNIE UNCORKED.......1999-08-01

This movie made 2 years after Jeannie series ended showed Barbara Eden in an entirely new unlike Jeannie role. It is thrilling and full of suspense .Husband Robert Vaughn is a real creep & Stewart Whitman plays the part of an artist who seems to be up to no good. Barbara surprizingly shows off her fabulous dancing ability, uninhibited, wild and sensuous. Beautiful acting by Barbara Eden . This is one of the few movies where she is terrified, unlike other of her movies.Very enjoyable .A classic.

Vincent Price and Tab Hunter star in this entertainingly silly adventure. Very, very loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's "City in the Sea," War-Gods of the Deep starts off just right, with a stormy night and a huge old mansion by the sea. Before you know it, everyone is charging through secret passages and swimming around in enormous diving helmets. The plot zips along nicely, and the cast of pros knows just what to do with it. By this point in his career, Vincent Price could do tragic brooding menace with both hands tied behind his back, but he still puts his all into it like a champ. David Tomlinson also does a great job as half of a comic relief team--the other half being an uncredited chicken. This may not be a story for the ages, but it's not a bad way to spend an evening. -Ali Davis

3 out of 5 stars Poe meets Jules Verne (sort of...).......2006-07-28

For once, I found myself in agreement with every other reviewer here. Read 'em all, they know whereof they speak!

Having just polished off all 8 Roger Corman POE films (plus CASTLE OF BLOOD), I set my sights on this, hoping it might turn out better than I remembered. As it happens, it was EXACTLY as I remembered. Can't win 'em all. AIP refused to let their POE series end with Corman's departure, and plowed on. There does seem to be a lot of talent involved here... except, like the 3rd season of LOST IN SPACE, it feels like it was shot from a 1st-draft script that could have used a LOT of extra work.

The story, involving a seaside mansion, secret tunnels, underground caverns, and a secret "world" lorded over by a megalomaniacal madman will no doubt remind the viewer of several other films, most of which are better than this one. Using a POEM as a jumping-off point (they'd done it before with THE RAVEN) this seems to borrow ideas from such Jules Verne stories as JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, and perhaps others less well known. Price is classic as always, though his character shows virtually no admirable qualities. Tab Hunter seems to be walking thru the picture. Susan Hart is a DOLL, but gets VERY little to do. I like David Tomlinson, generally... just NOT HERE. He's annoying, and so is his chicken, oddly named Herbert (is that a reverse on "A Boy Named Sue"?). John Le Mesurier, who I've seen in many films & tv shows, actually gets a chance to exhibit more depth and emotion in his brief scenes as the long-kidnapped preacher than I've ever seen from him, and perhaps more than anyone else in the film!

I often get frustrated with characters like Price's "Captain" who simply CAN'T be reasoned with. He issues Tab Hunter an IMPOSSIBLE task and deadline, then quickly condemns him to a watery grave. (Was anyone surprised?) He kidnapped Susan Hart because she's a DEAD RINGER for his long-dead wife. While a staple of late-model DRACULA films (including those with Gary Oldman, Frank Langella AND William Marshall), I wonder where this idea really originated, as the earliest use of it seems to be the 1932 Karloff classic, THE MUMMY.

While the basic premise is interesting, the cast adequate, and the sets & props excellent, the writing drags it down unforgiveably, leaving no room for the director or the actors to go with it. I was also confused by the layout of the tunnels (considering how important they were to the plot, it's a point of confusion that should have been better handled). And of course, the climactic underwater action scenes are just impossible to follow. (This is no THUNDERBALL-- made the same year!) A shame... this makes THE PREMATURE BURIAL look like 5 stars by comparison!

2 out of 5 stars War Gods, what are they good for? Absolutely nothing, uh huh.......2004-04-22

In an effort to determine what exactly went wrong with War Gods of the Deep (1965) aka City in the Sea, I looked at the individuals involved in bringing this film to life. The story is based on an Edgar Allen Poe poem, The City in the Sea, so it had good roots. The director, Jacques Tourneur, seems quite accomplished, at the very least prolific, directing scads of films and television shows from the 30's all the way into the 60's. Let's look at the writers...Charles Bennett, well, he appears to be a very capable writer, responsible for a few films I've really enjoyed like The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The 39 Steps (1935). Let's see, who is the other writer? Louis M. Heyward? The schlock producer/writer responsible for such films like Pajama Party (1964), Sergeant Dead Head (1965), and Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966)? Oh bruther...Oh wait, I also see he was a production executive for KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978)...I think I've found the weak link in this production.

The film stars Vincent Price as The Captain, 50's teen heart throb (also known as 'the sigh guy') Tab Hunter as Ben Harris, Susan Hart (who was married at the time to James H. Nicholson, one of the founders of the AIP, the studio that released this film...big mystery as to how she got the part here...) as Jill Tregillis, English character actor David Tomlinson as the foppish Harold Tiffin-Jones, and Herbert, the chicken...yes, there is a chicken in this film, and it did get a screen credit at the end.

Okay, the film opens pretty well, with a dark and stormy night and a large, isolated manor house/hotel on a secluded Cornish coast, sitting on the edge of a high cliff before the raging sea. A body washes onto the shore, and some locals discover it's a lawyer who is assisting American Jill Tregillis manage the transition of an estate from a recently passed relative...I think...the finer points of the story got a little muddled, and continued to do so throughout the film. Ben Harris, and American geologist (I think) gets involved, for whatever reason, and goes to tell Jill that her lawyer (or barrister, as I think they are referred to in good old England) has bit the proverbial big one. No one seemed particularly put out by this fellow's demise, giving me the impression that the English feel the same about their legal professionals as we do in the states. Here we meet one of the residents of the house, an artist named Harold Tiffin-Jones, and his pet chicken named Herbert. Why does he have a pet chicken? Well, I didn't get the impression he was married, so draw your own conclusions. After Ben has a slight skirmish with a mysterious intruder, he finds that Jill is missing, so he, Harold, and Hubert investigate. They find a secret passage, one that leads to caves and such beneath the manor, and find a giant whirlpool, to which they promptly fall in...what a couple of goons...and awaken in the city underneath the sea...oh bruther...

Some stuff happens, barely, and the boys (and the chicken) meet The Captain. Seems many moons ago the city was a land based one, but fell into the sea, pulled there by an underwater volcano. The residents at the time, being very smart, fashioned machines and such to enable them to continue to live in their city, but weren't smart enough just to just leave the city as it was sinking...and now The Captain is the leader, king, whatever, of the now remnants of this once great city, and is desperately searching for a way to save the city from the increasingly active volcano that threatens their existence, sending fish men and such to the surface to steal books, kidnap people, whatever, all in a means to try and stave off disaster. Yes, there are fish men, who aid the humans in the city underneath the sea for some reason or other. Why? I haven't the slightest idea... Why don't the humans just leave the city, you ask? I wondered that myself... Well, living in the sea has been a sort of blessing as well as a curse, extended their lives to highly un-natural lengths, but has rendered them highly susceptible to the ultra-violet rays of the sun in that prolonged exposure would cause rapid aging followed by death. Why kidnap Jill? Because she bears an uncanny likeness to The Captain's deceased wife...oh bruther...

War Gods of the Deep actually has some pretty good-looking sets and gave a glimmer of hope that was soon extinguished as the plot unfolded. As far as the source material is involved, Price does have some voice-over with him reading passages from the Edgar Allen Poe poem, but that's about it...Vincent Price and David Tomlinson are fun to watch, but really can't help save this drecky mess. Tab Hunter and Susan Hart are obviously thrown in for eye candy, as neither seems entirely capable of pulling off their respective characters. This film seems to try to do for Edgar Allen Poe's poem what Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) for Jules Verne's story, even borrowing elements from that much better film, replacing the goose from the film with a chicken. Too bad it didn't work. Oh, and I can't finish without mentioning the drawn-out underwater scenes that tried to create all kinds of suspense and tension, but due to the fact that movement is restricted and everyone moves, in effect, slow motion, these scenes had quite the opposite effect, and will probably prompt the viewer to be looking for the fast forward on the remote.

The wide screen print here looks okay, with a few blemishes, and there is a trailer, but that's it for special features, unless you count the availability of French and Spanish subtitles.

3 out of 5 stars SO BAD IT'S, WELL, BAD.......2002-04-19

With little fanfare, MGM has quietly transferred a handful of great B films to DVD that they not too arbitrarily categorize as "Midnight Movies." The nice looking digital prints are in their original theatrical format and appear as if they were taken from original material. The discs come with no substantial extras but care has been lavished on the box art, often reflecting the lurid lobby cards and posters of their initial release. Even acknowledging the B category, these are for the most part well-crafted and, well, adequately acted.

In "WAR GODS OF THE DEEP," the late and much-lamented Vincent Price co-stars with 50s pretty boy Tab Hunter in an adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe story that pits he-men against gill-men with sexy Susan Hart caught in the middle.

See, Price is uberlord of a lost underwater city (apparently built by a low bid papier mache developer), and he's got gillgoons that kidnap landubbers. The second half is a showdown between brave humans and slimy fishmen with an angry, about to blow volcano towering over everything. ...

This gets 3 stars 'cause Vincent Price and Edgar Poe had a hand in it.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Visually Appealling Film.......2002-01-04

Although the story-telling and pacing leave a lot to be desired, this is a nice addition to the very collectible MGM Midnite Movies series. Great sets, locations, and actors (Vincent Price, whom many would pay to hear him recite his laundry list) make this a very visually appealing film. I disagree with Maltin's comment about the "shoddy underwater city". For its time, the visual effects (with the notable exception of the gill-men ), sets, and props were impressive. Try it out and see for yourself.

    2 out of 5 stars IT SINKS!!.......2001-12-16

As a storm rages outside a creepy old mansion on a clifftop, lovely Susan Hart is kidnapped by a half-fish/half-man creature and taken to Vincent Price's undersea lair. Tab Hunter, David Tomlinson and Herbert The Chicken (who gets a special screen credit at the end) go to rescue her. I wont say any more about the plot in case you want to check this out for yourself. I thought the movie was not campy, outrageous nor exciting enough to be anything more than a pleasant Sunday-afternoon time-killer. Director Jacques Tourneur has done some great stuff in the past (like Curse Of The Demon)and I was hoping for more thrills....oh well! Vincent Price just walks through this one having nowhere near as much fun as he does in some of the other AIP Poe adaptations and in Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (also with Susan Hart). The DVD itself has great artwork, a nice letterbox print and good sound plus a trailer.

Sexy American movie star Betty Williams (Pia Degermark from Elvira Madigan) flies to Transylvania to get a gander at her ancestral castle. While touring the torture chamber (which inspires kinky fantasies) and the family vault, she inadvertently unleashes her randy grandmother, Clairamonda, an ancient vampire and a brunette double to blonde Betty. A clumsy wig-swapping, door-slamming farce ensues, with Betty seducing a local schoolteacher, Clairamonda feasting on local lascivious monks, and a climactic vampire orgy at a bloodsuckers' ball where Betty finds herself the only fresh plasma in the building. Less a hippie vampire tale than a sexploitation knockoff of Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers, this West German comedy features a spoofing performance from Ferdie Mayne, the vampire king from Polanski's film, as a groovy Dracula with an eye for female flesh. Former Hammer director and master cinematographer Freddie Francis shows little facility for comedy and exhibits none of his cinematographic skills in this crude but fitfully amusing farce. The leering performances make Benny Hill look subtle, the slapstick gags are undercut by indifferent execution, and the entire production lumbers under bad makeup and atrocious dubbing. Degermark, however, proves to be a good sport, giving a spirited performance while disrobing at almost every turn, and Mayne has a blast in an over-the-top turn as a deliciously decadent bloodsucker. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Strange but different, I suppose.......2007-06-06

This film is odd. I can't quite put my finger on it, but perhaps it suffers a little too much from its own kookiness and a particular strain of "Laugh-In" type of quirkiness, as well as other things reminiscent of that time. I did think it was visually interesting though, and it held my attention until the very end. Lots of nudity, swinging vampires, and other weirdness from the 70's abounds and is sure to please everyone; you can't help but laugh at some of the antics, even if you try.

4 out of 5 stars Fangs for the Mammaries.......2006-05-09

A typical plot device has an American heiress arrive in Europe to look over an old castle she has inherited. The help is surprised when she arrives as she looks just like her grandmother who was supposedly a vampire. When trying to prove that vampires don't really exist, the new Countess accidently releases her vampire ancestor. Now with two look-alikes running around the confusion begins to build.

But with the vampire released, bodies begin to pile up. A monastery and a religious school offer up plenty of targets for the hungry vampire. Soon more vampires are running around. But attempts to eliminate the vampire seem to fail as no one can tell which is which. Eventually we get other vampires and even Count Dracula drops in for a visit. Soon it seems like the vampires are completely out of control but being a double does have its uses.

Slightly reminiscent of The Fearless Vampire Killers this film also uses a lot of humor and slapstick in its makeup. But unlike the Polanski film, these vampires are quite debauched. Living and undead seem to spend an awful lot of time running around topless. So much so that one wonders why this is not billed as some sort of nudie-cutie film. But whatever the reason, this film works. The blend of humor and horror is done just right. Both female leads are played by the same actress (the director's wife) so the deceptions work very well. I was expecting something a little less commendable but was pleasantly surprised. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars The Hip, Happening Vampires..........2004-12-23

Woo-hoo! Now, this is a classic! Yep, young, beautiful Betty Williams (Pia Degermark), international movie goddess has just returned to her ancestral home via Transylvania airlines. Upon arrival at the castle, Betty learns of the grim fate of her grandma, baroness Catali. It seems she was found in bed, naked, with two bitemarks on her neck. Luckily, granny is in the castle crypt, sealed in a coffin. Of course, she's a vampire, so the last few centuries have been VERY good to the old gal! The baroness (Pia Degermark again) gets up and starts hunting unsuspecting victims at the monastary next door. One particular monk ends up at the wrong end of her fangs and becomes one of the most annoying bloodsuckers ever filmed. He soon creeps (more like stumbles) into the nearby girl's school (on the other side of the castle) and feasts upon a sleeping, naked student. Soon, the vampires are all revved up and ready to party! Count Dracula himself shows up as guest of honor at the wild flesh-feast, where most of the babes are topless! Hot diggety! THE VAMPIRE HAPPENING is a goofy, inept monster comedy that has just enough nudity to (almost) make up for it's lack of a decent script. I recommend it as a triple feature with VAMPIRES NIGHT ORGY and INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS (GRAVEYARD TRAMPS)...

2 out of 5 stars Why was this dubbed into English?.......2001-07-06

Beautiful sets, lights, props and music were marred by English dubbing. For Heaven's sake, I bought this because the title was in German, but when Amazon.com sent it to me, all of the German had been dubbed over, and there wasn't even any German in the subtitles. "Gebissen wird nur nachts," of course, means "Bites happen only at night" (one of those typical impersonal passive constructions that First Year German students run into) or "You only get bitten at night." Anyway, the four color printed cover that came on this DVD was pretty good, as English goes ("The Vampire Happening"), but it wasn't what I expected. It wasn't until I opened up the DVD that I found the slip of paper (with cute little cartoon bats flying around) with the original title - 'Gebissen wird nur nachts' - but where on earth did the German go? Why was this dubbed into English? Now, that said, this is not a total disappointment. It is what you would call 'soft-R' and not even 'soft-core.' A couple of scantily clad vampiresses are seen, and the plot was easy enough to follow. What I was struck with most with this film was the Disney-ish sound-track, a little more bouncy than "sound of music" but enough to remind me of the 1960's. If you are only into rap music, or rock, this soundtrack will probably strike you as rather lame. I think most of the value behind this DVD rests in what lessons it teaches the film student who looks at it from the perspective of how to put a movie together. It's a good enough movie if you can get past the English, which proceeds at odds with the movement of the lips of the actors. Sigh. Film collectors that want to follow the career of Pia Degermark might also find this movie valuable. But beware, ordering "Gebissen wird nachts" means getting "The Vampire Happening" when the DVD finally arrives in your mailbox. And there were no menu choices that you could click to turn on any German, not even German subtitling. I sure hope that ordering "Der Blaue Engel" or "Kleider Machen Leute" doesn't mean getting "The Blue Angel" or "Clothes Make the Man" when the DVD finally arrives in the mailbox.

Beautiful sets, lights, props and music were marred by English dubbing.... all of the German had been dubbed over, and there wasn't even any German in the subtitles. It wasn't until I opened up the DVD that I found the slip of paper with the original title - 'Gebissen wird nur nachts' - but where on earth did the German go? Why was this dubbed into English? Now, that said, this is not a total disappointment. It is what you would call 'soft-R' and not even 'soft-core.' A couple of scantily clad vampiresses are seen, and the plot was easy enough to follow.

It is what you would call 'soft-R' and not even 'soft-core.'
