Writer/director Michael Landon Jr. continues in his famous father's footsteps by creating moral family entertainment set in the early days of the American prairie. Stubborn Marty Claridge (Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy) travels west with her new husband--but after they find a beautiful patch of land, her husband dies in an accident before they've even started building. A man named Clark (Dale Midkiff, Air Bud: World Pup) makes a proposal: If Marty will enter into a platonic marriage with him, he'll pay for her passage back east in the spring. What Clark needs is a mother, however temporary, for his willful tomboy daughter Missie (Skye McCole Bartusiak, Beyond the Prairie, Part 2). Missie fights Marty's presence fiercely while Clark, though supportive, speaks few words, and Marty suspects she's made a terrible mistake--but time reveals otherwise. Love Comes Softly, based on the popular Christian novel by Janette Oke, is a romance, but Landon carefully avoids any bodice-ripping histrionics. Problems get solved perhaps a little too easily, but the movie is cleanly written, pleasantly understated, and respectful to its characters. For many viewers, Love Comes Softly will be a welcome change from overheated secular love stories. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Based on Janette Oke's best-selling book series, and directed by Michael Landon Jr., Loves Comes Softly is inspired story-telling for the whole family. Marty and Aaron Claridge (Katherine Heigl and Oliver Macready) travel west in search of new opportunity. But when tragedy strikes and Marty is suddenly widowed, the young woman must face the rugged terrain, bleak weather, and life among strangers-alone. That is until a handsome widower named Clark Davis ( Dale Midkiff) suggests a platonic "marriage of convenience" until Marty can return home. As the months pass, through, Marty and Clark discover an unexpected new love where there was once only loss.

The good news is, yes, Jennifer Lopez can do comedy. In The Wedding Planner Lopez is Mary, a lovable woman who believes "those who can't do, teach. Those who can't wed, plan!" Her slapstick moments are lighthearted and she is spot-on as the controlling, compulsive-yet-sweet planner. The bad news is Lopez didn't get much of a vehicle in which to test drive her newfound comedic skills.

Mary's life is her career. Planning other people's weddings takes all of her time, leaving no room for a love life of her own. Her only personal life is a Scrabble club, to which she and her father (Alex Rocco, whose wandering Italian accent is painful to listen to) belong. When a handsome young doctor (Matthew McConaughey) saves her from a collision with a runaway dumpster (really, it works), she is instantly wooed by his quiet charm. Too bad he's the fiancé of Mary's biggest client, Fran (played winningly by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), the job that will launch Mary as a partner in her firm.

The main problem with this film is that no one wants to hurt anyone else's feelings. Everyone is just so gosh-darn nice. In a subplot, Mary's father is trying to arrange her marriage to just the nicest Italian boy. Gee, he's sweet. Golly, Fran is nice. Is there ever a way out of this mess and to leave everyone smiling? Yet, there is a touch of old-fashioned romance to this wholesome film, which can only be described as "cute." And while things may unfold in a predictable manner, The Wedding Planner is still lighthearted fun of the sort that inspires dreamy romantic thoughts. --Jenny Brown

is one of the best chick flicks out there. If you haven't seen it you need to find a copy now!! It is so cute and gives the best ending!

2 out of 5 stars Fun to watch..........2007-01-26

As most of the Revolution Studios movies, "The Wedding Planner" is not a conventional one. You won't find the classic leading lady with the classic leading guy in the classic romantic-and-predictable-as-usual story. And this stereotype-melting effort is probably what catches our attention. To see couples or situations you normally don't see due to social stereotypes and conventionalisms it is certainly a rather interesting exercise. Having said that, "The Wedding Planner" is also really fun movie to watch. Most characters are great (except perhaps Lopez' italian admirer who is plainly lame). And my other serious complaint is: what's with Matthew McConaughey's hair in this movie? It looks so dry and frizzy and so artifically colored! I think they could have afforded to give the leading guy a more stylish look. On the other hand, passing J. Lo as a italian gal is not very believable (I mean). But on the up and up, J. Lo's wardrobe and hairstyling are remarkably beautiful in this movie giving her a tidy, neat and classy look very distant from her usual flamboyant bombshell persona. Overall a nice entertaining light and funny romantic movie to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-09

Bought as a last minute gift, and she loved it and it got here just in time

5 out of 5 stars I personally loved it :-).......2006-04-30

This is the movie where I began to love Matthew McConaughey, and where I began to see that Jennifer Lopez is not a bad actress (in this type of role).
Basically she meets him and they have a connection, and little does she know that she already knows his fiancee because she is planning their wedding.
It's a cute light-hearted romantic comedy and if you like that genre, you will love this. Yes there are corny lines and outrageous situations, but that is part of the fun. It's a great movie that all romantics will love.

One of the biggest teases in film history, this film's sensational plot finds a young wife (Demi Moore) solicited for sex by a wealthy bachelor (Robert Redford), for which the latter offers to pay a cool million bucks to her and her underachieving husband (Woody Harrelson). The two accept Redford's deal, and their marriage is ruined. The twist in the film, though, is that the sin doesn't lie with the rich guy, but rather with this unfocused, immature, equivocating couple who would do such a thing, naively believing it would get their lives on track. Director Adrian Lyne, who caused an even greater stir by filming Lolita (the one starring Jeremy Irons), thus pulls a kind of thinking person's bait and switch, promising something tawdry and then turning the story around so its focus is on a rite of passage for the estranged spouses. Still, Lyne has some peculiarly garish ideas at times: the final disposition of that million dollars is like a joke out of Monty Python. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Product Review.......2007-01-15

There was a mix-up in shipping time and it took longer than expexted. The communication from seller was pretty much non-existant but Amazon did a great job in handling the situation. And, I want to thank Amazon.com for all the help!

3 out of 5 stars Not Lyne's Best.......2006-06-27

In another provocative, erotic film; Adrian Lyne brings up a difficult question. Can money buy anything? This movie could've been done in several ways and the way that it's done is not the best of those ways. As far as entertainment value and brief shots of Demi Moore naked, this movie is pretty good. But some of the decisions, reactions, and some of the things that happen in this movie make it a little bit too silly for 4 stars. The movie stars Demi Moore ('Charlies Angels: Full Throttle') and Woody Harrelson ('The People Vs. Larry Flynt') as a happily married couple named Diana and David. Diana and David are perfect for each other and are very happy, but are down on their luck and having serious money problems. So one night, in the middle of the night, David comes up with a great idea. Go to Las Vegas with 5000 dollars and turn it into 50,000 dollars. Yeah, that's a great idea. You're about to lose your house, but still...Try your luck. Anyway, David and Diana go to Vegas and are lucky for a while but end up losing all their money. Distraught and on their way home, they run into a billionaire named John Gage (Robert Redford, 'All the Presidents Men'). After hanging out with Gage for a while, Gage gives the couple the ultimate indecent proposal.
One night with Diana, one million dollars. David and Diana go with the immediate reaction, which is no, but suddenly they're dealing with what everyone would go through in a situation like that. Reluctantly, both David and Diana agree to it; Diana goes off with Gage, but David is suddenly stricken with instant regret. When she gets back, giving David no details of what occured, it's hard to return things to normal. Anyway, I've covered more than an hour of the movie; So, I'll stop. All the actors are good;
Redford is perfect as John Gage, Demi Moore adds the right touch of innocence and sexiness to her role, and Woody Harrelson is massively understated. As I said, the movie is entertaining but so many stupid things happen...It's hard for me to give it a high rating. The revelation Redford makes at the end of the movie is one of the lamest ways to give an excuse to end the movie I've seen lately. Oliver Platt co-stars as David and Diana's lawyer and Billy Bob Thornton makes a hilarious cameo.

GRADE: C+

3 out of 5 stars A good start that stranded in the middle of the storm! .......2006-06-08

The spirit of the tragedy has been slow but progressively demolished and even confiscated since the XVII Century. Since these ages, the tragedy has suffered a visible process of perverse distortion, becoming just a moral lesson to follow. Jean Anouilh, Jean Paul Sartre, Joyce, Selma Lagerloff, Albert Camus, Fedor Dostoievsky, Eugene O Neill, Giovanni Papini, Ionesco, Beckett, William Faulkner, Ernst Hemingway, August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen are weird exceptions, but in general terms, the cathartic experience derived from the tragic ethos, has vanished.

So, if you dissect the tragedy into fragments of moral lessons, you just are telling a fable, but nothing else. You simply have frozen the wrath of Gods into hermeneutic pills, in order to satisfy the great audiences and so guarantee them, a final return to their respective homes. But the soul has not suffered the expected shock, and the spirit has not experienced the sharpness of the contrasts: long life to triviality. In the tragedy there are not good guys or bad guys; there' s no one absolutely innocent; the tragedy is the violation and transgression of a rule related with the cosmic order. It's impossible to understand in its wholeness, the force of its significance if you do not look it under the mythic coordinates.

The film starts with an interesting dilemma to solve what if?. The corrosive and nasty feature represented by Redford , may be considered as the Devil' s embodiment. The proposal was made and accepted. But once the dramatic peak has been reached, one can feel how the film precipitates obstreperously, the expected reactions fall in a well know stereotyped cliche; she cries and is in shame; he looks arrogant but then the character becomes a marionette.

A false redemption works out as the final launch, that will allow them to understand one each other and the forgiveness will hover about them.

This material really did not deserve such predictable final. In hands of Robert van Akeren (The woman in flames), for instance the result would have been absolutely different; there is a lot of self indulgence not only for the characters and the audience in general.

1 out of 5 stars A Razzie "winner".......2006-04-30

A brainless, predictable soap opera with some of the most laughably bad dialogue I have ever heard. This is easily the most embarrasing "serious" film I have seen and is argued to be one of the worst films of all time (the film "won" several Razzies, including Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay). Adrian Lyne -- whose credits as a director alternate between the interesting and the unpleasant/sleazy -- directs this movie as if it were a shampoo commercial.

A woman (Demi Moore) and her whiny, annoying husband (Razzie recipient Woody Harrelson, who unfortunately disappoints) are in a state of financial crisis. Because the couple is, well, spoiled and none-too-bright, they go to Las Vegas with the intention of winning money in order to buy their dream house. Their plan fails, and I personally did not care because neither character is especially sympathetic. Along comes Robert Redford, who offers them 1 million dollars in return for sex with Moore. Then, the marriage collapses in emotional turmoil and numerous bad scenes play out (including a curious one in which a classroom of immigrants learning English from Moore miraculously understand English all of a sudden and laugh at a bunch of jokes told by Redford).

The story is trashy and sleazy, and there's not one sympathetic character in the bunch. The seasoned Redford has some good moments, but even he cannot save the picture. Overall, this is a Razzie "classic," to say the least, and it contains one of the most laughably bad lines I've ever heard in a film: "I really wanted you to have that hippo." (note: If you are now wondering how a hippo ties into the film, I advise you to not bother giving it any thought).

Jane Austen's Persuasion receives a devoted treatment in this 1971 BBC production. A financial blow to the Elliot family brings the eldest daughter, Anne (Ann Firbank), back in contact with Captain Wentworth (Bryan Marshall), whose offer of marriage she was persuaded to decline seven years before. Will the conflicting forces of social rules, family interference, and personal temperament allow her to set things right? The capable cast of this clean, straightforward adaptation bring Austen's satirical characterizations to vivid life. Firbank earns our sympathies with quiet grace and exquisitely restrained yearning. While the stronger, headlong pace of the 1995 film version of Persuasion makes for a more concentrated emotional pay-off, this two-part miniseries, at four hours, captures more of the novel's details, making it just as satisfying. Austen's skillful plotting makes the romantic hopes and fortunes of the 19th-century English middle class as suspenseful as any mystery or thriller. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Different Production Values but Excellent Characterization.......2007-06-27

I think that this version of Persuasion is very underrated. Reading the reviews for the '95 version you would think that no one had seen this one or any other before it. I can understand why this might be undervalued, the setting is very "stagey", it does not have the overall beauty and rich settings that newer versions can offer. The sound is very weak as well, the audio pick-up makes it difficult to hear all the lines. (British movies, especially older ones, are notorious for bad sound. I can't understand why new DVD releases do not automatically include subtitling, and I don't mean merely close-captioning, because they really need it.) Further, there is the effect of the fabrics and styles which are so obviously from the 70's and can detract somewhat from the experience. Anne is wearing a plaid dress at one point! Finally, as has been pointed out the actress playing Anne is obviously quite a bit older then her 20 something role requires. However, all that being said, this is still one of my favorite productions so far. The reason? Despite all of these drawbacks I still feel that it captures the spirit of the novel better than any other I have watched. I love this Anne. She has a dignity and maturity combined with a sweetness of spirit that almost seems too good to be true at times, but is balanced by a subtle but wry sense of humor that prevents her from becoming inhuman and cloying. No other Anne that I have seen captures this to my satisfaction. In fact I found Amanda Root a very sad Anne indeed. She played her as a timid little mouse of a person beaten down by circumstance and victimized by her family. I couldn't respect her.

To my mind one of the things that raises Persuasion above a mere Cinderella story is Ann's personality. Although her family does not value her she is someone who has such a capacity to love and such a desire to be loved in return that she rises above their pettiness and negligence and refuses to become bitter and hateful or pitiful and depressed in response to their lack of concern. Instead she tries to set an example and behave with the caring and consideration that she would like to receive. Her firmness of purpose and ability to value herself is clear in her every action and although she has her disappointments and doubts, she is certainly not a victim. Her ability to forgive and do what she feels is right despite so many obstacles is a clear contrast to Captain Wentworth's pride driven anger which prevents him from understanding the reasons for her earlier rejection of his proposal.

I wish that more people could appreciate this Anne. I think she is closer to Jane Austen's original character in many respects and that even the actress's age only helps emphasize the maturity of her character. The cover doesn't do her justice for although she is not especially beautiful she is a very handsome woman with a nice smile and I think that too is more like the original Anne who is never described (except by an obviously biased Captain Wentworth) as being especially pretty.

Aside from Anne the other casting is all excellent. Her father and elder sister are the epitome of vanity and false pride. Her younger sister, the attention seeking Mary, is played superbly. Everyone else, from the solicitous but class-conscious Mrs. Russell, the bluff Charles Musgrove, the droll and somewhat eccentric Crofts, the obsequious Mrs. Clay and her lawyer father to the hospitable Hargraves, the dour Captain Benwick and the oily Cousin Elliot are very well cast. Louisa is very well done. Her lack of maturity contrasts Anne nicely showing both the self-centered forcefulness and the fearless sweetness of someone who has not yet experienced the disappointments of life and love. It is possible to envy her youthful vitality and pity her lack of awareness without disliking her personally which I think is a very difficult effect to achieve. In that regard I find that it rings very true to life.
Captain Wentworth also has a boyish charm combined with a hint of that forceful and passionate personality which makes him a good leader on board ship and which made him so temperamental when faced with Anne's refusal. Both his hurt and anger and his later warmth and respect for Anne are played with equal spirit and verisimilitude. Even when he is angry you can see his kindness and strength of character. I don't think that Ciaran Hinds can match that given that he plays aloof and angry characters best. I found him too severe in the beginning and not quite believable when he later relents. It's just not his role. He did a better job as the bitter and more forceful Mr. Rochester in the A&E version of Jane Eyre.

Lastly, the scenery may seem a bit washed out, but that is due to both the location and climate in Britain and the style of filming at the time. Perhaps I am biased in this but I found the length of the film, rather than being off putting, instead allowed me more time to immerse myself in the world and to savor the nuances of the interactions that occur in each scene. I also found the scenery added to this effect and enjoyed the views of Lyme and the walks in the countryside very much for their realism rather than for the larger than life beauty found in more modern films. To my view many of the very things which might be considered negative in this film in contrast with newer ones were what attracted me to it. It doesn't have the polished quality of more recent offerings, but it does have a realism (despite the sound and 70's influence) that makes the experience more immediate. This is a favorite to watch when feeling ill or on a rainy day when something comfortable and non-demanding is required. It isn't especially steamy and passionate, but it is very intimate and warm-hearted.

5 out of 5 stars wait for it.......2007-05-14

I am a long time fan of Jane Austen and love the movies done based on her books. This is just one of them I had been trying to find. A friend at my local blockbuster told me they did not order movies for us any more and told me to try amazon.com. I did and now I enjoy this movie anytime I want to.

1 out of 5 stars Save yourself tedious hours.......2007-04-01

Picked this up at the library. I can't say one good thing about it. The costumes were not authentic fabrics for the period, the editing was sloppy, the cinematography downright stunk, it dragged horrendously with a "walking" scene that was ludicrous, the acting was like a "first read" at community theatre (maybe worse), the Admiral flubbed most of his lines, the lead, Anne, looked much older than she was supposed to be....and what was with that hair? They were all just reading their lines...no emotion whatsoever........

Save your precious time and don't watch.

5 out of 5 stars The magnificent "Persuasion".......2007-02-22

This version of Persuasion has small gems of introspective thought and analysis throughout. Anne's character develops physically and mentally into a woman who now believes that she can correct the terrible mistake of taking bad advice in her youth. All of the virtues that Austen attributes to Anne Elliot are fully realized as Anne goes from an "insignificant person" to a woman who learns that she is competent, caring, poetic, and understanding. She is determined to not make the same mistake again, and this production delves into the maturation of Anne from a doormat to a woman of great depth and wisdom. The version with Amanda Root is an excellent production also, but the length of that movie does not allow for the time to show these incidences of insight and poetic imagination that Anne brings out in this older Persuasion version. I would highly recommend this slower yet deeper version of Persuasion, and I recommend the newer version for its sheer beauty of production, acting, and cinematography.

2 out of 5 stars no comparison!.......2007-02-11

The actress playing Anne was 38 at the time! Apart from that, there is no comparison with the exquisite portrayal by Amanda Root in the 1995 movie.

4 out of 5 stars Nudity , the "Aussie way" ........2007-05-17

In a few words : blatant , uncomplicated , straightforward .
A typically Australian non-conformistic view about nudity .

2 out of 5 stars Nude beach, bad script.......2007-04-20

Here is what you get: a low budget picture that takes place on a nude beach in Australia, lots of male and female nakedness, no sex, a poor script loaded with pointless and unamusing vignettes of romances gone hot, cold, and lukewarm, lame humor involving farting (definitely not in place in a movie about nude beaches), etc. It's worth a peek if you want to see the bodies. Don't expect anything else. As someone who enjoys naturist beaches, this could have been much more interesting. As it is, it is exploitative and just plain dumb.

2 out of 5 stars TWO STARS ONLY FOR THE STORY LINE.......2007-03-22

Quite frankly, I was embarrassed for all the blokes that decided to do this movie 'au naturel'. If I were equipped as little as all of them were, I certainly would never have done a nude movie that's for sure. Thank goodness the cameras caught very few close-up shots of their private parts!

For the storyline, I must admit that it was kind of OK. A bit stupid in some segments, but OK. Definitely not one to add to one's DVD library like I did. Put it at the back of the stack if you do decide to buy it. I would suggest if this is your cup of tea, rent it first.

2 out of 5 stars If you're on a tight budget, don't bother with this one.......2007-01-10

About the best that I can say about this movie is that the nudity on the beach is treated as no big deal, in fact if that's the reason you're thinking about buying it- better go buy something from Playboy.
I "get" the plotline- sort of- but the story is presented in a disjointed manner with several segments split apart by bits of other stories put in between. I found the people to generally be a bunch of losers that I had a hard time caring about and so boring that a viewer might want to fast forward (don't do that- you might miss some of whatever you consider to be the "good" bits).
It appears to have been filmed with one camera held in a stationary position, not a lot of movement, with just one small microphone- the sound could've been better, many times you'll know a person is undoubtedly nude but the camera is held above the level you'd need to see any of it. I'm not sure how clear the original film was, the DVD seems soft focused to me with the color maybe a little bit off.
The subject matter is treated respectfully (the nudity part is fairly well so anyway, you never really get a good look at most of the beach itself or most of the nudity for that matter) but the romance/life part is just so BORING!
Unlike some I found the cast to be generally attractive enough but I pretty much wish I hadn't bought the DVD, try looking for it in used/good condition at a cheaper price.

3 out of 5 stars Naked people say it better.......2006-02-25

Maslin Beach can be best described as a movie depicting a typical day at an Australian nudist beach.

It opens with a guy and his girlfriend driving to the beach in the morning. As they walk onto the beach, the narration begins. It is the guy, Simon, he wants someone to tell him how one knows if he or she are in love. He is having doubts about his relationship with his girl Marcie. This provides a thread that links the various vignettes throughout the movie together.

As the film progresses, it focuses on various male/female couples and a group of three girls. Soon the viewer relalizes that these people did not come to the beach to tan those bits that rarely see the sun, but to explore and evaluate their relationships. Being naked merely makes the process easier because, as the old saying goes, "Naked people don't have anything to hide!"

Maslin Beach features more than a few stark naked and semi-naked people. It is a credit to the director that the cast is not made up of only "beautiful people," as the film features dorky-looking guys, saggy gals, and very physically unfit people of both sexes.

It doesn't take long for the bushy deltas and dangling penises to take a backseat as the dialogue begins to assert itself. This is where the movie both succeeds and fails. The writer seems to lack confidence as he gives the viewer far too many discussions to follow. I found some to be almost profound, while others were absurd. All were too short. The viewer would have been better served by two or three long conversations rather than the banal chatter of six or seven. For my money, I would have picked the three girls, Simon and Marcie, and the couple discussing the lying daughter.

Nonetheless, this is a nice, quirky little movie that is not deep, but does cause one to think.

Excellent performances and flashes of visual flair turn what could have been a run-of-the-mill sex thriller into taut and unpredictable neonoir. Burt Reynolds is genuinely scary as Charles LeBlanc, a wealthy man so consumed with jealous suspicion that he offers Jimmy (Peter Facinelli), a good-looking carpenter, $50,000 to try to seduce his wife, Lily (Saffron Burrows). When Jimmy comes over to do repairs on the LeBlanc's house, he and Lily experience some sparks, but she spurns him--until she learns from another source about the financial deal, and decides to teach Charles a lesson. Of course, things quickly get out of hand... but between Tempted's steamy New Orleans atmosphere, a host of well-written and -acted supporting characters, and a carefully orchestrated plot, it's never obvious who's going to end up cold on the ground or hot between the sheets. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Jimmy isn't about to do it for the money ... but then he meets the woman. Tempted. It's about hard money and soft flesh, hot bodies and cold killers. Because when you start messing with another man's wife - even if he's paying you - you'd better get ready to die.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for a low budget movie.......2006-08-06

This is a HBO straight-to-video movie but it's a pretty good one. A wealthy man Charlie Le Blanc (Burt Reynolds) doesn't completely trust his wife Lilly so he pays a handsome young man named Jimmy Mulate $10,000 to seduce her and $40,000 if he is successful. Jimmy has to find a mark on her and describe it if he has sex with her but Charlie has the house bugged with high tech equipment so he already knows before Jimmy says a word.

Since I don't want to give up the entire plot I just want to say this should have been on TV. It's not good enough to been at the theater but it's entertaining enough to spend an hour and a half watching at home. If you like a good film noir type movie it's worth your time.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable, but quite entertaining.......2006-05-19

A wealthy Louisiana man plays by Burt Reynolds is concerned that his young and beautiful wife (Saffron Burrows) might be unfaithful. To test her, he pays $10,000 to one of his employees (Peter Facinelli) to seduce her and another $40,000 if he can get her to sleep with him.

The plot twists are generally predictable for the genre, but the performances of three principal actors are good enough for the viewers to sit through the entire movie. Burt is fine, Saffron Burrows is georgous and Peter Facinelli is competent enough in the seduction acts.

The picture is Full Screen only and not bad looking, capturing New Orleans in vivid color and in dark tones in the less colorful neighbourhood. The 5.1 Sound is OK, overall a good rental DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Tempted steams up with good performances by the leads.......2005-08-08

Burt Reynolds (The Longest Yard, The Dukes Of Hazzard) gets the idea in his head that his sexy ass wife, played by Saffron Burrows (Deep Blue Sea, One Night Stand), isnt worthy, so he hires a construction guy, played by Peter Facinelli (The Big Kahuna, Dancer, Texas Pop 81), and pays him to see if his wife will sleep with him. So, Facinelli goes and gets closer to Burrows and she finally gives into banging him after she hears from some woman about her husbands deal and also, there's a private investigator in the mist watching everything they do. Reynolds gets pissed, threatens Facinelli and winds up getting shot 3 times. Interesting story with the leads Facinelli and Burrows steaming up the screen everytime they have a scene together and Reynolds plays another jackass in this movie but he's good in it. He also voices over the beginning of the movie and end of it. Also starring Mike Starr (Dumb and Dumber, Snake Eyes) and Eric Mabius (Resident Evil, The Crow: Salvation). Enjoy and if not then, that's your problem.

3 out of 5 stars Steamy, but still only "pretty good".......2005-06-03

Why does Burt Reynolds always look like he's about to break into laughter? He's really not a very good actor these days and the severely streched look of his numerous facelifts is a bit disconcerting, although his toupee is a stunner.

That trivia aside, the plot is a good one and the acting is quite good, although the lady in question could use a slightly greater emotional range, considering the intensity of the plot. There are some surprises, too. I'd suggest buying the film so long as you realize that this is not the kind of film you watch over and over again, like, say, "The Postman Always Rings Twice" or "Rebecca" (the original version).

The New Orleans setting of "Tempted" has the wind-chimy flavor and humidity of Kathleen Turner's "Body Heat" from a while back, but lacks the intensity. With Body Heat, it was real passion. With this film, it's real sex -- not the same thing.

It's pretty good but not worth rating above 3 stars.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars for New Orleans, Lousiana.......2005-03-06

Burt Reynolds and New Orleans. First thought is of Smoky and the Bandit. No such luck, this is a movie adapted for cable and television because, well, because it wasn't quite good enough for the theatre. Hot, steamy and tropical, New Orleans; yes, NOLA is all that. So three stars for NOLA.

This movie, "Tempted" takes place in New Orleans, but it is a typical romance, thriller, mystery. Charlie, (Burt Reynolds) an older wealthy businessman with dubious connections, weds a young, beautiful blonde, Lily, (Saffron Burrows) and then worries that she will cheat on him. Isn't that a given? Charlie hires a young carpenter, Jimmy (Peter Fascinelli) to help around the house and tempt the beautiful wife. Things go as planned until Lily finds from another source exactly what Charlie has planned. She decides to teach him a lesson and leads Jimmy on. What she didn't plan on is that Jimmy falls in love with her, the beautiful temptress. What Charlie didn't plan on is that the detective he hires to provide evidence isn't all he seems. And, what Jimmy didn't plan on is that he would be in the middle of this big mess, alone.

Charlie winds up in the hospital. Jimmy is on the lam, and Lily is safe at home with the family's lawyer, doing heaven knows what. The mystery is pretty blatant, and all we wonder is who is going to wind up dead or in jail, and who will be blamed? The action is slow, the background music doesn't lead credence to the plot, and I wonder just what was the director thinking. Saffron Burrows is beautiful and sultry. Burt Reynolds is old and his new face doesn't fit him. Peter Fascinelli is young, too young for this this role.
Glad I didn't pay full fare. prisrob

4 out of 5 stars Canadian Carpenters & a Zulu Child.......2007-03-10

The Film Movement DVD "A Simple Curve" is set in the Kootenays region of Canada, perhaps around the Arrow Lakes. The gorgeous mountain and water scenery is breathtaking. Kris Lemche who was in "Final Destination 3" & "The Last Casino" (2004) plays the lead, Caleb. Caleb is 27 years old and lives with his father. They are in the process of getting over the death of their mother/wife who died of an extended illness. Lemche's excellent performance anchors the film, as his character anchors the family in the story. Michael Hogan who has a long film career with over 20 features including "The Peanut Butter Solution," "Cowboys Don't Cry," & "Solitaire" for which he won a Genie Award -- Canada's Oscar -- for Best Supporting Actor plays the father Jim. Jim is an old hippie who likes to skinny dip au natural and is a master carpenter. However, the carpentry business he and his son have established is not doing well as cheaper products made of particleboard supplant more expensive real wood products. Matt Craven comes along as Matt. Craven is a recognizable face and has played in films like "Blue Steel" (1990), "A Few Good Men" (1992) & "Crimson Tide" (1995). His character is Matt, a contractor who tries to promote a lodge on the lake that would throw a lot of business toward Caleb & Jim and keep them solvent. There is a friction between Matt & Jim. We learn that both shared the affections of Jim's wife before they were married, to the point that Caleb could be either one's son. This revelation occurs as the lodge deal falls through. Caleb tells both of his fathers to F off & departs on a nomadic adventure. Meanwhile, two young hippies played by Pascale Hutton & Sarah Lind (Erika) have moved in. In a night of mistaken passion, Caleb repeats his father's pattern by sleeping with Erika. They have a daughter; and the father wonders if he or Caleb is the biological father.

The film starts out a bit slowly and has kind of an open ending to it as Caleb returns to the valley. I'm sure this is intended to impress one as being artistic, leaving suggestion as to what could occur. It strikes me more as half-baked. Themes of grief and adjustment resonate; although it took me about 3 sittings to watch the DVD. I was glad I'd seen it, but my life would have been complete without it too. Some of the scenes are cute like Caleb sitting on the open-air outhouse looking at the mountains as his father wants to have a serious chat. There are some sweet father-son moments as Caleb throws a surprise birthday party for Jim.

The film won the Nantucket Film Festival, Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival & Two Leo Awards as well as being an official selection of both the Toronto & Vancouver International Film Festivals.

The short film "Lucky" by director Avie Luthra is quite moving. From South Africa and the United Kingdom, it follows the story of a young boy named Lucky who heads to the city of Durban when his mother dies of AIDS. His uncle appears ill prepared to assume the guardianship of a young boy, kicking him out in the middle of the night so he can entertain a local girl. An Indian woman who lives several apartments down is a racist and apparently hates Zulus. Without friends, Lucky brings her water to try to befriend her. He also wants to listen to a cassette tape his mother left for him. The Indian woman hits him in the face with a broom, causing bruises. Eventually, the Indian woman feeds the boy and allows him to sleep on her sofa. The film is a positive one, speaking to the need for human understanding over racial stereotyping. The short won the Best Short Film Award at the Aspen Film Festival. The brilliance of the 18-minute short earns this DVD another star. :) Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Frigid, tense and claustrophobic, with a towering performance by Stellan Skarsgard.......2006-09-23

"Now you'll become one of the unhappy." These are among the last words Randbaek has for Henrik Larsen as they crouch on the icy deck of a wrecked boat cast up on the Northern Greenland coast. What a curious and fascinating psychological thriller this is, although "thriller" gives a wrong impression. What's been happening is the taunting aggression, the truces and betrayals that Randbaek (Stellan Skarsgard), a crude, tough trapper, has been inflicting on Larsen (Gard Eidsvold), a young writer who signed up for an adventure and got more than he bargained for.

Zero Kelvin takes place in the mid-Twenties. Larsen is a happy-go-lucky poet in Oslo who hasn't published anything. He has a girlfriend who wants to keep their love free and doesn't need such things as engagements. He signs up to spend a year in Greenland hunting and trapping. Of course, he'll keep a notebook and a letter from his girl. He winds up in a desolate, frigid wooden shack he shares with Randbaek, the trapping foreman, and one other trapper, Holm (Bjorn Sunquist). The wind howls and so do the sled dogs. There's nothing to see except shale beaches, snow and ice, and the endless cold, gray days. There's nothing to do except work, kill seals, shoot rabbits for food, skin animals, butcher the meat, and huddle around an oil stove at night. Randbaek has no patience with college boys or educated youngsters. He's capable, violent, raw and obscene. Henrik learns to pull his own weight, but it isn't easy. Randbaek's attitude toward Henrik gets worse. His descriptions of love to Henrik, and of making love to Henrik's girlfriend, are not for the faint-hearted. Randbaek may be a man to have along if your survival depends on it, but if Randbaek's survival depends on you not surviving, Randbaek won't think twice. Holm keeps his own counsel. Randbaek sees Holm as a friend, but Holm, something of a scientist, a sharpshooter, seldom takes sides. If the wooden shack they all share, sometimes with lice, seems close quarters, it quickly becomes claustrophobic. Eventually Holm has had enough. And Randbaek and Henrik sort things out in a way that is tough-minded and brutal. Henrik eventually returns to his girl. An engagement may happen. But Henrik is not the happy-go-lucky young poet we met earlier.

The movie is fascinating for several reasons. First, the icy desolation of the location chills your bones. Randbaek's taunting games, which really aren't so much games as a basic part of Randbaek's deeply unhappy emotional makeup, seem even more unpleasant because there's no place to escape them. Second, as time goes by and as we see Henrik's competence increase, we expect some sort of confrontation...and we aren't looking forward to it. Randbaek is a bulky brute of a man. It won't matter how righteous Henrik's case might be; this isn't a movie where the smaller guy would win. Third, you can't keep your eyes off the actors; they're that good. Stellan Skarsgard in particular gives a monumental performance as Randbaek. It's not that he's almost unrecogniz
