Description
(Gay Thriller) When private eye Donald Strachey finds his latest client dead, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Strachey's investigation leads him on a dark and dangerous trail into the world of "gay conversion therapy" - a twisted mix of psychology and religion designed by a doctor to turn homosexuals "straight." Based on the best-selling series of novels by Richard Stevenson
Customer Reviews:
Mystery and love for everybody!.......2007-06-13
I loved "Third Man Out", the first Donald Strachey Mystery movie and this one is even better. The great thing about "Shock To The System" is that the characters are more developed, especially Donald. You get to know him better and in the scene when he tells Timmy about the Army (I can't give details) you feel and cry with him. Chad Allen is a excellent actor but in that particular scene he is simply superb.
I love murder mystery either on film or in books and "Shock To The System" is a great film for those like me who love this genre. But what truly caught my heart is Donald and Timmy's relationship... they are adorable together! This movie is MUST for cute-couple-suckers like me... you can't get wrong with these guys!!!
Stimulating, Riviting, and Good Depiction.......2007-05-13
For anyone who has wondered if the movies would change from showing us the stereotypical gay man, here is a set of films that do. A gay detective embarks on a mission to discover the devious deeds that lead to another mans death. Yet, this film shows much more than just an interesting plot. This is the second film in the Donald St. series and gives the audience a more indepth picture to who the hero really is as well as to how he is coming to understand what life is about. Through this film the protagonist, Det. Don, battles many fears and insecurities all people suffer from, not just a homosexual adience. He confronts a past that still haunts him and stands in the way of his current relationship as well as deals with the oppressive need to fit. Something the murder victim was struggling with.
So, if you enjoy a good murder mystery that also allows you to see how human a person can truly be, I highly recomend this film. You will enjoy the plot as well as charater development and be able to identify with many of the feelings and emotions portrayed within this film. Of course this is only my opinion, but I can safely say you will not be disapointed with the purchase of this video.
Not a shock to my system - it was an injection of pleasure........2007-05-11
This is the second movie in the Donald Strachey Mystery series. It is an improvement on Third Man Out (the first) which also was a thoroughly watchable mystery.
The characters and the storylines are developing well. There is more background information to show how Strachey became the man he is: loyal, trustworthy, tenacious and attracting trouble like a magnet. His partner Tim (Sebastian Spence you can put your shoes under my bed at any time:0)), although not as prominent also developed more depth in this installment of the series. It was like he is settling in for the long haul, relaxing into the role.
I felt the story flowed more easily than Third Man Out and it was a little harder to pick the murderer - although I did by the second murder (but I usually do because I LOVE mysteries).
I don't know if the fact that Chad Allen is actually an out gay man means he brings depth, understanding and a comfortableness to his role but he definitely portrays the character well and shows emotion realistically in the scene where he recounts his first gay relationship experience and the tragic outcome of that. He seems relaxed and real - which is not an easy thing to do - as Strachey.
I think although being gay oriented, because of the characters, it is not an in your face type of prominence. It shows being gay is as normal as being blonde - it just is, you can't change it (although ironically the storyline in this movie is centred around this being otherwise). I like that it is woven into the story showing gay people have real lives, real relationships, real problems and real love. (Sigh) I love a love story and this fits into that liking as well. It gets to me on a couple of levels which is refreshing - mutli-satisfying.
I am definitely looking forward to the next one. If they keep developing in depth and quality this will prove to be a must-have series for film buffs, especially those that love the mystery genre.
Not so shocking, another pleasant film!.......2007-04-23
The gay detective is back! After a promising turn in "Third Man Out", private dick Donald Strachey returns in this second mystery starring Chad Allen.
[...]
[...]
The story and the plot are much better than the first, a definite sign that the series is improving with each film. Sebastien Spence returns as Donald's partner,Tim, and Nelson Wong becomes Strachey's new office manager, Kenny Kwon. Chad Allen does a very good job as the main character and is a wise choice as the film's protagonist.
A good mystery film and worth adding to your dvd library. I hope we see another Donald Strachey film soon!
A nice, complicated murder mystery with an interesting private eye. Don't forget to read the books by Richard Stevenson.......2007-03-22
"Trevor Cornell is one of the most successful reparative therapy providers in New York," says Timmy Callahan. "I wonder what his idea of 'successful' is," says Donald Strachey, a private eye. "Dressing badly," says Callahan, "decorating your home with duck decoys, breaking out in a rash whenever Barbra Streisand sings."
To explain: Reparative therapy means conversion from being gay or lesbian into happy, contented heteroes. Timmy Callahan (Sebastian Spence) is a political type in Albany, New York. Donald Strachey (Chad Allen) is not only a capable and tough private eye in Albany, he and Timmy are married. "At least," as Strachey says, "as close as two men can get to it...more important, I'm in love with him." Those who find a gay agenda under every leaf, revolver and bloody baseball bat may not like this movie. On the other hand, those with a fondness for well-constructed mysteries that feature politics, victimization, murder, martinis and phenalzine should enjoy the story, the style of Donald Strachey and the puzzle. Bet you don't guess the murderer. It's worth pointing out that you don't need to be a collie to enjoy "Lassie" or a guy with a gut to enjoy John Wayne. And you don't need to be gay to enjoy Shock to the System. The movie has it's faults...it was made for cable with awkward acting in some of the secondary roles and it has that clean, careful look of most made-for-TV films. But the mystery is satisfyingly complicated, with a nice number of red herrings. Chad Allen makes a believable, interesting private eye. And his happy home life with Timmy would probably be the envy of many married couples, gay or straight.
Paul Hale, a frightened 20-year-old man, wants Strachey to help him. But before he can tell Strachey what he wants, he is found dead. At first it's thought Hale died of a stroke, but when a lethal mixture of alcohol and barbiturates is found in Hale's system, Strachey decides to find out what was going on. And that takes him undercover to the Phoenix Foundation, a successful institution led by Dr. Trevor Cornell and his wife, where gays and lesbians, Dr. Cornell says, can find their true path to heterosexuality. It turns out that Hale was going to be a poster boy for the Foundation when Cornell announced a major push to go nation-wide with his cures. Not only does Strachey find himself taking part in group therapy and flashing back to his own earlier life, he gets threatened, beaten up, chased and shot. Almost as frightening, he encounter's Hale's wealthy, well-groomed and surgically-enhanced mother. "My son was not gay!" she says. "He was...confused." Strachey eventually solves the crime. Justice, formal and informal, is dealt out.
Donald Strachey is the gay private eye in eight mysteries written by Richard Stevenson, beginning with Death Trick in 1981. They are first-rate reads with clever, involved and sometimes violent plots. In other words, they aren't gay mysteries...they're mysteries that happen to feature a gay private eye. Two of the books have been made into cable movies; this one was shown in 2006 and Third Man Out was shown in 2005. The books are well worth reading if you like mysteries. This movie is no classic, but it makes it's "gay agenda" points low-key enough that they don't interfere with the story. And although there is a bit of beef cake that shows up from time to time, one or two friendly smooches and a quick flash of frontal nudity, the movie has none of the leering smarminess that seems built-in to many of the boy-girl Hollywood films nowadays.
The DVD transfer is excellent. The disc has a director's commentary and two or three extras. I didn't bother to sample them.

better than I thought.......2007-01-10
This dvd comes with two episodes. A shocker on shock street and click. A shocker on shock street was pretty good. It was one of the most interesting goosebumps episodes I've seen. Click wasn't as good, but still good enough to watch.I found click to be more humurous than scary. While I was watching it I kept thinking, this is a goosebumps episode? This episode did kind of have a scary twisted ending though as most of the episodes do. If you like goosebumps, you should watch this one.
Pretty Good Episode...Not great........2006-08-11
Even though this DVD hasen't been released yet, I remember this episode constintly being re-run on FOX KIDS. It was an alright episode from what I can remember. I don't want to give away the ending or anything but I think the kids end up being robots.

Must have.......2006-08-21
Zatoichi Vol. Four is as good as the first three volumes. Like some of the other episodes they do tend to be simular to some of the films. Despite this, the series is excellent. You forget your watching a tv show and you are immersed into the continuing story of ichi. I am so happy that these are finally coming out on dvd, slowly, but being the huge fan of Ichi that I am, I couldn't get enough with the 25 of 26 films available. Where's #14???? My only complaint is that media blasters would release the series by seasons and not volumes. The 4th vol is still season 1. There are 100 epsiodes to the series and with only 4 or 5 on each vol, well do the math that's a lot of volumes. If you like the films and you are a fan of samurai cinema, these dvd's are a must have.
zatoichi vol 4.......2006-07-20
i buy movies from japan all the time in amazon.com the best place, zatoichi is the best samurai ever

If You Like the Film Series..........2007-03-24
Volume 6 of the Zatoichi TV series wraps up Season One, and I have been very happy with the episodes thus far. They are exactly like the Zatoichi film series except that they are in full-frame TV format, and last about half the running time of an average Z film. Not surprisingly, many of the stories are lifted right from the films, or are at least very similar. But the Zatoichi series follows a definite pattern anyway...the discs have no quality issues, although the boxes don't hold the discs very well. My copy of Vol. 6 had a loose disc, but it played fine. If you're a fan of the Zatoichi films, you gotta have these; I hope the entire series is eventually released.

Zatoichi Da!.......2007-05-31
Not going to go over each episode.. suffice to say, if you enjoy the earlier film series starring the Japanese Lone Ranger, you'll equally enjoy the TV series on DVD. If you've only seen the new Zatoichi with Beat Takeshi, the movies and TV series will appear a little campy, but worth it.
Great Yakuza TV series.......2006-04-16
After making 25 films as Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Shintaro Katsu the owner of Katsu Productions decided to move to Television for 4 seasons. The exact same as his films except cut down to 45 minutes & full screen. These are a rare special treat as they are not even released in Japan yet.
here's a review of the episodes:
Episode 1: A Challenge of Chance (46 min)
Ichi (Shintaro Katsu) visits the mining village of Ashido where a cold and calculating yakuza boss named Yasaburo is forcing the locals out of their businesses and jobs. He joins an aging sword master once known as Tatsu the Sword Thrower in aiding Oshin, a young female in protecting her business from Yasaburo and his henchmen. Ichi's biggest challenge is in figuring out how to keep from getting shot by a rifleman in Yasaburo's employ.
Episode 2: The Flower that Bloomed with the Lullaby (47 min)
Ichi befriends Taro, a small boy selling persimmons to pay for his ailing grandfather's medicine. It comes to light that the boy is the son of a wealthy silk merchant and Ichi agrees to escort him home. But a local yakuza boss is after a reward for the boy's return, as is Inosuke, an unemployed gambling dealer who convinces his wife to stall Ichi's progress while he arranges to collect the reward.
Episode 3: A Memorial Day and the Bell of Life (47 min)
Ichi puts a stop to an attack by hired ronin on a rival yakuza family, saving the frightened son but not his widowed mother. He also spares the life of Monji, a grateful ronin who begins following Ichi. Monji attempts to prod Ichi into a duel, but the blind swordsman has vowed not to draw his sword for 12 hours on this day in memory of his dead mother. As Monji bides his time, the two strike an unlikely bond as they encounter the daughter of a ronin killed by Ichi and help the widow's son take revenge.
Episode 4: The Kannon Statue that was Tied (47 min)
A corrupt official takes advantage of two rival yakuza families feuding over the planned relocation of a sacred Jizu statue by taking money from both and plotting their destruction. A petty conman also steps forth to convince one of the yakuza bosses that he knows Zatoichi and can get the notorious blind swordsman to help their cause. It's a lie so he sets out to convince the first anma (masseuse) he finds to act the part. Little does he know that his first choice is the real Ichi. Ichi's thoughts are preoccupied by other concerns, however, specifically in helping a young woman recently released from prison reunite with her three-year old daughter.
Episode 5: The Heartless Man, Touched by Compassion (47 min)
Ichi meets a streetwise young boy, whose drunken father has accumulated debts that may force the boy's elder sister to be sold into prostitution. Ichi steps in to pay back the debt through gambling, but the greedy father strikes a deal with the yakuza that puts both his children and Ichi in trouble. If that's not bad enough, Ichi finds himself forced to duel a skilled and righteous swordsman, who is desperately trying to raise enough money to pay for medical treatment to restore his sister's sight. Not much needs to be said about the series' writing. It's up to par with the feature films and actually seems to work better on the small screen. Zatoichi was always episodic in nature, which makes it a perfect fit for an ongoing TV series. All the writers did was trim the fat. One slight disappointment is a lack of any reoccurring characters beyond Ichi and any sort of evolving relationship that could go with them. With 90 minutes, there's time enough to keep introducing new characters, but cut that in half and the writing has to get creative to flesh out characters. Amazingly, it gets done through a variety of techniques, but it only amplifies Ichi's drifter lifestyle and general alienation.
A must for all Zatoichi movie fans.......2006-02-26
These are great little stories, well acted, with exciting swordfight scenes.
Media Blasters as done an excellent job in upgrading the color and video quality.
I have many of the episodes from old VHS dubs. After purchasing Volume 1 of the Media Blasters release, I was impressed by the improvement in picture. Volumes 2 and 3 are already ordered. I plan to purchase the entire series as they are released.
Zatocihi's Triumphant Television Series.......2006-02-23
If you enjoyed any of the ZATOICHI movies, one should find much to love about THE TALES OF ZATOICHI (Zatoichi Monogatari). Due to the declining box office for feature films in Japan, Star/Producer Shintaro Katsu too the blind swordsman to television -- much like other superstars, like Toshiro Mifune with series such as YOJIMBO ON THE FRONTIER and THE HAWK OF JUSTICE, Katsu crafted a wonderful and compact television version.
The series features many well-known character actors, many of whom Katsu brought along with him, as well as the same screenwriters and directors of the feature films -- but you wouldn't know that from the DVD packaging. Directors Kimiyoshi Yasuda and Kenji Misumi deftly handle the material, scaled down to the small screen, but with big screen panache and style -- even though shot in 16mm -- subtle compositions and smart editing adorn this series. The evocative and eerie score is provided by the amazing Isao Tomita (CATASTROPHE: 1999, ZATOICHI MEETS THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN).
Pick up the ZATOICHI: THE TELEVISION SERIES DVDs, because if sales are good, Media Blasters promises to release all 100 episodes of this classic and sterling television series. We should thank our lucky stars, because the series has yet to be released in Japan on DVD.

Good work, but C. Taylor needs updating.......2006-02-19
No human being who is able should miss anything Zatoichi. There is no film after the 1960s that has escaped influence from the film and television series.
But now an error must be corrected in a previous review by C. Taylor. Miramax has officially informed me, via letter, that MIRAMAX does NOT own the rights to the Zatoichi film episode 14, known to fans as "Zatoichi's Pilgrimage". This film, never released commercially in the West, has been released in Japan.
The news leaves us unsure whether we will see a DVD of "Pilgrimage" any time soon. MIRAMAX refuses to confirm or deny any other allegations.

MTV.....Such rebels! NOT........2005-09-06
Okay, I just got this DVD today not from amazon.com, but from a local retail DVD/CD reseller. I'm posting this as a cautionary warning to anyone considering buying this DVD. I can only say this: Don't buy it. Save your money. MTV shows their true colors with this release. It's nothing but producers talking about tom green like he's the ultimate king of comedy right up there with jerry lewis, red foxx, johnny carson, etc. Don't get me wrong: I find tom green very VERY funny and his skits have left me rolling and clutching my abs in pain from the laughter. What's wrong with the DVD??? First, the menu is stupid and the colors so bright and diluted that I thought I needed 3-D glasses in order to see the different options/destinations. Second, the people involved with the tom green show interrupt every damn segment with voice-overs and the like. Thirdly, alot of segments are edited down and portions are fuzzed out and bleeped. Seriously, MTV is a huge corporate double-standard. Even back in 2000 they were showing all sorts of teens acting a fool on "the real world" and rap videos promoting violence, yet "MTV studios" can't release an UNEDITED VIDEO/DVD? Excuse me? MTV, who are you trying to protect? Get real! Furthermore, the "hidden features" show VERY short edits from some of tom green's skits. Example: imagine my delight when I clicked on an easter egg to see the "piggy" sketch which is tom being .....tom, and doing a gregorian chant about the 'piggy' and the 'piggy goes down the hill' all the while he's staring and mugging for the camera. Hilarious and devestatingly funny. I laughed and actually applauded...then stopped when they STOPPED 1 MIN. INTO THE SEGMENT and faded back to the menu. Wait, you mean to tell me that MTV could'nt be bothered with including the whole damn thing? What, time was running out like on a VHS tape? Also the segment where tom brings home that homeless woman and tells his parents she's engaged to him. They stopped halfway though and never told you the outcome. The worst DVD I have ever bought and I will be returning the DVD tomorrow. The people behind this DVD are just out to get your money, don't give it to them! Lazy crummy layout and editing and production. It would have been SO easy to just show the clips in their entirety THEN give you the option of voice overs/commentaries but apparently MTV could'nt find the time or just did'nt care. Plus the sound fades in and out and the laughable "rock" back music rises up and down and sometimes drowns out the people speaking! Cheap crap of the lowest denomination. Tom Green deserves better and I know he was'nt behind this at all. No, it's MTV cashing in on their property and trying to make a quick buck. Avoid at all costs. *ZERO STARS* F-
Not "uncensored" but "behind the scenes".......2005-01-22
Tom Green has many home videos out now, most of them being very popular. However, this one is different from the rest, thus the poor reviews. This is NOT a collection of his comedy sketches on MTV. It is rather a documentary about his show on MTV, a "behind the scenes" special. It doesn't include Tom, but has the cast of the show telling what it was like to work with Tom, and what some of the skits were like to film.
This is not for the casual Tom Green fan, or for anyone looking for funny skits to watch. Its rather a behind the scenes feature that shows what its like to have a show such as The Tom Green Show. This film DOES include many small clips of skits he has performed, which adds much variety to the mix. Buy this is you're a big Tom Green fan, or even if you're interested in seeing what a talk show is like, behind the scenes. It really lets you understand the comedy behind Tom Green.
TOM GREEN IS TALENTLESS AND A MORON .......2004-10-22
Tom Green has the humor of a 3 year old with the intelligence of .... well he has no intelligence. Each episode is about him being more and more annoying. Plain and simple the man (and i use that word lightly) has not talent.
Poor Excuse for Entertainment.......2004-04-04
Tom Green is a sick individual. This DVD is just one example of his lack of class and intelligence.
Hmm... pretty boring.......2003-06-29
Although this wasn't absolutely terrible, it was awfully boring for the most part. It's just a bunch of interviews and old clips, entertaining for a while. Some of the stuff that they reveil is actually quite interesting, and this tape could be considered almost like a biography focused around the time of his show. There were some new clips, but it really wasn't all that great.
