Oliver Parker, a stage and film actor (Hellraiser), made his directorial debut with this scaled-back version of Shakespeare's play about the paranoid Moor, Othello (Laurence Fishburne), and his manipulative friend, Iago (Kenneth Branagh). Parker gets the story so lean he starts running a little short on the author's subtext, and if it's possible to overemphasize the banality of Iago's scheming and Othello's malleability, he does so. The director throws out what is universal in the story and makes it all seem merely ordinary, human, and unfortunate, which is the opposite of what watching Shakespeare should be. In the end, it's hard to care what these characters have done to one another. Branagh's Iago is a little flat and unfocused, while Fishburne is excellent as a quieter Othello than we're accustomed to. With Irène Jacob (Red) as Desdemona. --Tom Keogh

Fishburne has energy, but no subtext; he's all bluster. He also has zero chemistry with Irene Jacob, who was shockingly awful as Desdemona. I have no idea why or how she was allowed to speak English in a movie. On a bright note, however, the actress who played Emilia did an excellent job, and Branagh's Iago is the stuff of legend. This is a must-have for teachers of Shakespeare, like myself, but not for anyone else.

The combination of Branaugh and Fishburne is dynamic. Fishburne gives a convincing and emotional Othello showing true acting ability but Branagh is senational as the slimy Iago, beautifully changing from "Honest" to evil. Jacob is a good breathless Desdemona and dispite necessary editing the sense and dynamics of the plot are well maintained. Sets and costumes are excellent.

Fascinatingly lurid (if a bit brief) adaptation!.......2006-08-18

Yeah... Chances are, your local theatre group isn't going to trump this anytime soon. Yes, it's a viciously truncated version Of Shakespeare's play. But hell, this is a movie, folks. I seriously doubt you've committed the first folio to memory that well. In all honesty... nothing too important is ommitted and the taut pacing/implied sensuality makes up for The Bard's missing lines. Moreover, if you're going to chop any of Shakespeare's tragedies, this would be the one to hack at; if only because Iago's real motivations are never fully revealed... He hints at jealousy and The Moor's possible adaultery with his wife, Emilia... but those are rather too minor to warrant why he does what he does (he doesn't even like his wife that much...)

I don't think Iago knows the real motivations for his villiany- he doesn't want to face himself, all the more reason to lose himself in a tangled web of inrigue... Branagh takes the role and runs with it masterfully: he's so alive and passionate when involved with the other characters and so quietly monotone and intensely sinister when delivering his soliloquies!

Anyway, my amateur psych profiles aside, this is a wonderful film version. The performances are as smoldering as they are riveting. Fishburne is his sensual best, Branagh is coldly intense and creepy, his stop-on-a-dime two-faced portrait of Iago is superb. The chick who plays Desdemona is competent, she suffers and dies well enough. The actress doing Emilia is great as well. Cassio is the dumb stud we all know and love... Everyone who's not Iago or Othello is more or less delegated to the background so the film can focus on their interaction and Iago's machinations.

Well-paced and directed with great settings and locales and a lovely soundtrack that is understated in all the right places and bombastic in all the right places...

If you've seen it, you know. If not, check her out!

Well created version of Shakespeare's work. Many scenes envoked much detestation for the villain whose treacherous plot to hurt others out of jealously and spitefullness...what a tragedy! All in all I enjoyed the movie.

Usually, tributes are made after someone has passed away. But, for Celia Cruz this was not the case. Her talent, humility, simplicity, and of course her voice captivated and inspired so many around her so deeply, that they wanted her to be honored while she was still here. It is this spirit that we see in "A Night of Salsa". Celia in her opening act reminds me of a Cuban doll. She is beautiful, and her voice is undoubtedly the best. Her friends, such as Tito Puente and Johnny Pacheco show us how much she was loved (and still is). For those of us who love salsa, love music, and love Celia, this video is priceless. Celia is no longer with us in person, but in this video she lives on . Que en paz descanse la reina de la salsa!

In one of her most memorable stage concerts, Celia Cruz along with the help of some famous friends celebrate the world of Salsa music in pure splendor. "Celia Cruz & Friends: A Night of Salsa" is a PBS-produced special that features Celia performing for a sold-out crowd in Hartford, Connecticut. Performing many of her classics, including her trademark song, "Guantanamera," Celia is joined on stage by the late, great Tito Puente, who along with a full Latin orchestra rocks the house by all means necessary.

Later in the program, she is joined on stage by her longtime friend and duet partner, Johnny Pacheco, and by La India, who is known to many as the "Princess of Salsa." This performance, which was the final time Celia and Tito performed before his death in May 2000, is not only a fitting tribute to Celia, but to Tito, who Celia has admired and loved since he helped her reach international stardom upon her arrival to New York after she left Cuba shortly after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Celia never forgets those who helped her in the past and she graciously gives accolades to all the Puerto Rican artists who always were there for her.

Celia is a true diva. Her choice of costumes and wigs has made her somewhat of a Latina Tina Turner, and her stage persona can't be matched even today. "Celia Cruz & Friends: A Night of Salsa" will provide you with an exciting, rhythm-filled performance that all with enjoy. There are no language barriers when it comes to music appreciation and Celia and friends will validate this statement entirely!

Just finshed watching this video and I wanted to tell you that this was a great concert done by Celia Cruz having owning the cd as well I couldn't wait to see the concert it was great seeing Celia proform her old and new song on this video my favorite song on this tape is Bemba Colora because she sings this song this such passion and such feeling and my other favorite song has got to be Celia Y Tito because that was the final time she proformed with Tito Puente. Overall I give this tape two thumbs up 5 stars. If you love Celia Cruz or latin music in general you will love this video.

Omigawd this was BAD!!.......2006-01-02

I'm sorry I can't give this one a rating lower than 1 star, because I think it really doesn't deserve any at all.

Other reviewers have hinted at the sound quality, but the mix on this movie was so bad I don't think I heard more than 1/3 of the dialogue. Did anyone involved in making the movie listen to it before it was released? Or maybe the sound mixer found out there wasn't any money to pay him, and this was his joke on the director and producer? Between dialogue recorded at a level inaudible to anyone except Superman to dialogue at a normal level, but with the rock soundtrack blasting over it, I shouldn't comment on the script, but what I did hear was derivative and hackneyed.

The acting? Bad for the most part. I would particularly single out Cory Schneider in this regard.

Plotline? Again, hackneyed and stale.

Unlike another reviewer, I didn't start laughing until it was over, but then I couldn't stop laughing at the idea that this movie takes itself seriously. It may at some point reach the status of camp classic, but that's all it will ever be.

Please, I beg you, save your 13 bucks! Rent it if you feel you have to, but don't waste good money buying this piece of tripe.

I was dismayed by the way this movie lurched on to an unpredictable, but incredibly unsatisfying ending! I thought the premise sounded intruiging so I rented it, and am thankful I had not bought it.

The movie started out with promise, but quickly I found myself thinking no couple would endure what is going on. AND when the movie took a right turn (I am trying not to be a spoiler here), I found the actions being taken completely unbelievable and the ending was a total shocker (and not in a good way).

Sadly, I wanted to like this film. It does have some good things going for it, but in the end, I cannot recommend this movie.

I bought this movie based on glowing reviews on another web-site and I was terribly disappointed. While the basic story was a good concept, it was executed horribly. There was literally nothing good about this movie. I wanted to turn it off but I kept watching, hoping it would get better. It didn't! Bad acting, bad writing, bad movie. Don't waste your money.

I was shocked. This was a low end movie. Low end acting. Low end plot. Shoot, even the stealing of the idea was low end. Yes, this was hailed a "Gayer Death Trap" but I hardly saw anything that was as thrilling or suspenseful as that movie was. Maybe it was so "hailed" because of all the implied sex with hints of nudity, but I'm not hailing any part of it. The actors were good looking but their acting was devoid of any real emotion or charisma.
What a waste of time. I rented it... thank goodness...

Bassist-singer Jack Bruce, renowned for being a part of the short-lived but influential rock supergroup Cream, leads a mid-'80s version of his "Friends" ensemble for this 60-minute concert, filmed at Germany's Rockpalast. And an unusual lineup it is, as Bruce brings together Clem Clempson, a guitarist formerly with the heavy blues-boogie band Humble Pie; Billy Cobham, a versatile jazz drummer perhaps best known for his days as a jazz-fusion pioneer with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra; and keyboardist David Sancious, whose credits include membership in one of Bruce Springsteen's early bands. The quartet (plus backup singers) brings a fusion feel to tunes like "X Marks the Spot," but in the end it's the Cream that rises, as Bruce opens with "White Room" and finishes with three more Cream favorites, including "Sunshine of Your Love" and a spirited but too-brief "N.S.U." Weak production values and mediocre song selection (save Cream tunes) mar this show. Clem Clempson has mighty big shoes to fill on guitar and turns in a run of the mill performance. I read on the back of the DVD sleeve that the first incarnation of Jack Bruce and Friends (right after Cream broke up) was formed with drummer Mitch Mitchell and jazz-rock guitar man Larry Coryell...now that's a DVD I'd like to check out!

Special features on this disk are pretty lame and non-existent. Hardly what you'd call a true bonus.

Jack Bruce can't seem to get a break. Here is an exciting and gifted performer who thrives in a live environment. Yet every attempt to show this has been met with poor to mediocre results from the Cream Farewell concert to this session. This was a terrific band that easily flowed from jazz to rock and could keep up with Jack's own virtuosity. But the production values are awful, and the song selections, other than the Cream and early solo material, are uninspiring. And the sound is pretty close to disasterous. It's also frustrating that the camerawork focuses mostly on the guitar player when I wanted to see Bruce's phenomenal fretwork, as well. And one last complaint - it's awfully short. And NSU was cut to shreds, as the encore. Considering there's nothing else out that documents Jack as a solo performer on DVD, it's still a "must-have" for devoted fans. But it will not be a saitsfying experience.

How interesting.......2002-10-29

Jack Bruce has always been an important performer in the history of rock. While recent years have not found him in the strongest of settings (3 tours of duty in the Ringo All-Starrs oldies troupe), his legacy of great musicianship, songwriting and singing remain. There have been very few videos of this long-time great bassist made available, and it's interesting to see this old show appear on DVD after all these years.

This DVD dates from approximately 1980 (given the band line-up and set-list). The "Friends" are all top-notch players, as you can see from the editorial. Billy Cobham's claim to fame was in the high-octane "Mahavishnu Orchestra" with John McLaughlin in the 70s, one of the hottest jazz-rock ensembles of all time. Clem Clempson was an ex-Humble Pie member, but also delivered some outstanding session performances in the 70s and 80s. David Sancious continues to deliver solid work to this day, most recently with Eric Clapton, and provides both great keyboard and guitar work.

Bruce is in fine shape, bass-wise and vocally, on this show. His abilities are still at peak form, and the fine mix of Cream favorites as well as solo material makes for a great show.

The reason for the low star rating is that this might be one of the worst sounding concert DVD's I've heard. The instrument balances go in and out, Bruce's bass is tinny, and sonically this is terribly flat and lifeless (especially disappointing for the hot performance). While this is for a TV show, there are numerous examples of better sounding concert videos from this period, as well as earlier. Obviously the producers of this DVD had little to work with, but seem to have made no effort to tweak this in any way. So be forewarned that this isn't going to thrill your speakers and your ears.

This is a very sub-par VHS to DVD transfer. Lots of image wobble (probably due to a faulty VHS deck), the sound is barely passable.

Further, it's NOT authorized and thus a bootleg. None of the performers recieve any money from the sale of this disc.

Shame on Amazon for selling bootlegs.

ok, the video's quality is not perfect but... who cares?? the show is great!! there are some of the most talented artists of all time... and they do an extraordinary job...

and it's not all... the audio cd is included with the dvd... so you don't need to buy it!! a very good idea... isn't it???
