5 out of 5 stars The Naughty Nineties .......2007-07-04

The greatist part of this movie is the whos on First. Don't get me wrong, the whole movie was great but as a avid baseball fan I loved the whos on first seen. I think it's the greatist comedy duet done in history. Plus I grew up watching Abbott & Costello movies on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I will always love there movies but this one the best.

I received the items in a timely fashion, actually quicker than I expected. The dvd's played fine. I really enjoy ordering from Amazon. I belong to columbia house, and I couldn't tell you the last time I ordered from them since ordering from Amazon. Also the great part was I didn't have to pay for shipping. Very well pleased.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Abbott and Costello, Vol. 2.......2007-04-02

Abbott and Costello's humor is outstanding and timeless. This collection of some of their movies will keep you laughing uproariously, and you will find yourself watching these movies over and over again and still keep laughing, even after you've watched them so much you know what's going to happen next.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Fun.......2007-03-31

I couldn't resist purchasing an Abbott and Costello DVD. Having grown up with this super-famous wacky duo, I couldn't wait to watch all their movies, the same movies that had made me giggle and guffaw as a mere youngster. I was not disappointed. It was a trip down memory lane that returned me to more innocent times, ice-cream sodas, nickle phone calls, The Andrew Sisters, and comic routines that kept a smile on my face for days. On the technical side, the restoration of these films is flawless. One might think that they were put in the can just yesterday. This DVD offers entertainment that is pure and simple, and a fun-filled glimpse of the past. Young people may find the DVD too silly, but you really had to be there to get the humor.

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-05

This movie makes Porky's look sophisticated. Don't think too much and just enjoy the movie for what it is. Definitely NOT a Family movie... Unless you're in the Manson family. Artie Lange is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Expected.......2007-07-04

If you like Happy Gilmore, Animal House and Tommy Boy, then this is worth a watch. Don't expect a high budget movie, but there are some really good one-liners that are not given away in the trailer. I liked it so much I am even buying a copy (spent $15 bucks just to watch in a hotel).

4 out of 5 stars Lewd, crude, offensive, and downright hilarious.......2007-06-25

For the purposes of my review of Beer League, I want you to forget about Howard Stern - more to the point, don't judge your potential enjoyment of this movie based on your dislike of the infamous shock jock. I for one do not care for Stern (and I had no idea Artie Lange was ever involved with the radio show), but I pretty much loved this movie. Sure, it's tasteless and juvenile and has to rank near the top in terms of its curse words per minute average (the MPAA's R rating is based on "non-stop language" among other things), but you know what? I say this is all about boys being boys - Jersey boys being Jersey boys, to be more exact. As a proud Southerner, I'm not naturally drawn to full-fledged Yankees, but you can't help but feel a kinship with real, 100% men like Artie and his gang who concentrate on the three B's: brewskis, baseball (or softball), and babes.

You know how some guys never grow up? Well, that's Artie DeVanzo in a nutshell. He's a thirty-something, beer-guzzling, unemployed lazy slob who lives with his mother (Roseanne's Laurie Metcalf) and is still all caught up in a high school rivalry with the slick and slimy Dennis Mangenelli (Anthony DeSando). Things get especially heated between their respective softball teams. This year, the police chief has had enough of breaking up the annual fisticuffs, so he decrees that whichever team finishes behind the other one will be thrown out of the beer league. This puts Artie and his buddies at quite a disadvantage, as they really aren't very good. Artie himself likes to smoke and drink out on the field. After an 0-5 start, though, the guys decide they might need to actually practice if they want to make a miracle comeback and give themselves a chance to knock out Mangenelli's team in the championship game.

Artie Lange is pretty funny, but he could never have carried this movie on his back; luckily, the supporting cast is very funny. Johnny Trinno (Jimmy Palumbo) always made me laugh with his play-by-play of his .700-chasing at bats, Cara Buono is great as Artie's used-goods but improbably attractive girlfriend, and Ralph Macchio proves he has put his annoying Karate Kid character completely behind him as he plays Artie's best friend Maz (who, in the spirit of the Jersey beer league, postponed his wedding until the end of the season).

Beer League is clearly a guys' movie; unless your girl likes to engage in belching contests and actually understands the basics of professional baseball, she probably ain't going to like this movie one single bit. It's not like Artie is a noble hero in disguise; he's a jerk for the most part (except when compared with Mangenelli), he's offensive in just about every way possible, and he's basically everything a woman isn't looking for in a man. For us guys, though, Artie's crude gestures and words, not to mention the give-and-take and acerbic dialogue that defines this movie, are oftentimes as funny as all get out.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs.......2007-06-03

This movie is about a man who is unemployed, living at home with his mother who continues to live life to it's fullest...at least full on whiskey. Artie Lange plays a man who lives for softball, but hasn't played well in years. Now after letting his temper get the best of him as always, his team may be out of the league forever if they do not try and turn it around. Also featuring Ralph Macchio and Jimmy Palumbo, this is a pretty funny crew. The humor is relatively crude, but still make will make you laugh enough to enjoy at least viewing this once. Onother note, special features are really not that special. Rent this or borrow it, but not a buyer.

3 out of 5 stars It's Not Bad!.......2007-05-31

This movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be. But it wasn't terrible either. It's an average movie with some admittedly hilarious parts here and there. I can say that I didn't regret my purchase of this movie.

It's not quite as clever as it tries to be, but The Game does a tremendous job of presenting the story of a rigid control freak trapped in circumstances that are increasingly beyond his control. Michael Douglas plays a rich, divorced, and dreadful investment banker whose 48th birthday reminds him of his father's suicide at the same age. He's locked in the cage of his own misery until his rebellious younger brother (Sean Penn) presents him with a birthday invitation to play "The Game" (described as "an experiential Book of the Month Club")--a mysterious offering from a company called Consumer Recreation Services. Before he knows the game has even begun, Douglas is caught up in a series of unexplained events designed to strip him of his tenuous security and cast him into a maelstrom of chaos. How do you play a game that hasn't any rules? That's what Douglas has to figure out, and he can't always rely on his intelligence to form logic out of what's happening to him. Seemingly cast as the fall guy in a conspiracy thriller, he encounters a waitress (Deborah Unger) who may or may not be trustworthy, and nothing can be taken at face value in a world turned upside down. Douglas is great at conveying the sheer panic of his character's dilemma, and despite some lapses in credibility and an anticlimactic ending, The Game remains a thinking person's thriller that grabs and holds your attention. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars An HD-DVD REVIEW (the movie is fantastic, of course)..........2007-06-19

OK- let's just get the fact out of the way that this movie was fantastic. I remember seeing the trailer in theatres, thinking it looked great. So I was one of the few that actually caught it in the theatre and actually loved it. (One of the few films that lives up to a great trailer).

So for the HD version. I have to agree with most of the BAD HD reviews. This is a total "embarrassment" on the part of Universal for releasing such an obviously, un-remastered version of it in HD. You actually can tell there is a slight difference on a 56" HD screen but for smaller TV's, I can imagine there is almost no gain at all in quality over the standard dvd (which was an earlier generation transfer to begin with). This is such a shame because this film along with a lot of Fincher's other "dark" (actual film quality vs. content) films deserve better treatment. Do not waste your money thinking it will look better because it's on HD-DVD. We'll have to wait for it to get remastered which does not look good at this point. I doubt Universal will follow Sony's suit in remastering, like the fifth element after bad bluray reviews. Universal chose HD-DVD because it's cheaper to produce so they probably won't listen to consumer's reviews on horrible transfers. (you know...the savvy consumers that buy up early generation players/software to get things started.)

5 out of 5 stars A mind game for the soul........2007-05-31

David Fincher's follow up to his out of nowhere masterpiece "Seven" is another example of his true genius. The Game is a film that grabs on to you and doesn't let up until the end. Even after it's over you still question everything you've seen and go over the film in your head. This is a film deserving of repeat viewing. The HDDVD quality is superior to any other version of this film available;although it would have been nice to have some extras on it. Who knows maybe a special edition is on the horizon.

3 out of 5 stars horrible HD-DVD transfer.......2007-05-29

I gave this flick a 7 out of 10 over at IMDB, but I would give it a 1 out of 10 for it's HD transfer. The movie in HD looks absolutely dull. Save yourself a few bucks and buy the standard DVD title. You'll end up with the same video quality.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie Is Great, the HD-DVD Transfer is So-So.......2007-05-18

I've always found this to be one of the most underrated films Michael Douglas has ever made. It got swept under the rug pretty quickly, which is a shame because the movie is like putting together a puzzle, a puzzle which could end up several different ways at the end, so you never know whats going to happen. The only drawback to the movie is that in a way, it is like the Sixth Sense, in that once you watch it once, and know whats going to happen, it loses a little umph the next time you view it.

Now as for the quality of this HD-DVD. I would say the PQ is barely better than a really good standard DVD, and that is a shame.

The Regular DVD of The Game is absolutely awful, so I'm glad that it is available on HD-DVD. I just wish they would have done a better job with it. Oh and some special features would have been appreciated as well.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Douglas is thrilling in The Game!.......2007-05-03

Nicholas Van Orton, a rather wealthy and successful man, played by Michael Douglas, is the sort of guy who wants to be... and is in control of all aspects of his life.

He likes order but his brother gives him a gift on his birthday that brings life as he knows it, to an abrupt end. His brother, played by Sean Penn, has enrolled him in "The Game," an experiential set of circumstances that progressively take Mr. Van Orton from rigid control of his surroundings to sheer chaos.

Michael Douglas is great as the rich, divorced, and lonely man, an investment banker, who... on his 48th birthday is haunted by the memories of a father who chose to commit suicide rather than confront life.

As the game starts, the company called CRS, or Consumer Recreation Services, involves Nicholas Van Orton in a series of events that bring him from anxiety to paranoia, to the depth of depression, through fear, anger, violence, seduction, and action... lots of action.

We are soon caught in the game, thrilled by the reality of what is happening to Van Orton, and horrified at the fact that everything around him appears to be so real. Van Orton's intelligence carries him through most of the impediments, but the apparent reality overwhelms him and at some point, he is simply out of control.

Michael Douglas is awesome as he conveys a sense of dread... of sheer panic that kept us riveted on his every move. Would highly recommend seeing this film, especially if you like solving puzzles... getting scared... in a world where everything is simply... out of control.

Chosen by fans, the five Power Rangers episodes on this disc are a cross-section of major events from the long-running series. (Dear to the hearts of PR faithful is remembering the succession of actors and characters who have donned Ranger costumes at different times. This anthology helps.) "White Light Parts 1 & 2," from season two, finds Lord Zedd unleashing the very strange Scarlet Sentinel, and the Rangers in nervous anticipation of their new leader, the unidentified White Ranger. "Countdown to Destruction Parts 1 & 2" would probably impress Roger Corman with its budget-conscious but slick mix of stock footage, computer effects, and rapid cutting in the story of the Rangers' near-defeat battling an invasion of Earth. Another nostalgic favorite, "Wild Force: Forever Red," involves an exciting reunion of past and present Red Rangers. Wild, crazy, engrossing stuff, though special features would have been nice. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars okay, but no the best.......2007-02-03

This DVD was I think the first Power Rangers DVD. I will review each of the episodes individually, but not say what they are about because I'm too lazy to type it and the plots of the episodes have been written several times in the other reviews.

White Light:3 stars. The rangers don't morph enough, and when they're not morphed, it's pretty boring. However, the battle scenes are good, and it is so emotional when the other rangers discover the identity of the white ranger.

Countdown to Destruction:4 stars. Probably one of the most emotional episodes on the whole Power Ranger series.

To The Tenth Power:5 stars. Best episode on this DVD. It's funny when Kai says "it can't be!' And then Damon replies "Oh yes it can." When they see the space rangers.

Trakeena's Revenge:1 star. This was just plain pathetic. There wasn't a single fun part in this episode. They should have had the girl kidnapped and the mother worried.

Forever Red:3 stars. This episode is not all it's cracked up to be.

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome!! Cant wait for Volume 2.......2007-01-16

When I first got this DVD i was very excited,I mostly bought it because of the Power rangers in space episodes, it's my all time favorite season, they come out again in the lost galaxy episode so it was double the fun, the only thing i did not like was that the lost galaxy episode ended on open notes, speed rescue and wild force we're also awesome,, i just didnt like the mighty morphin episodes, they werent from season 1 and it didnt contain the original opening i think it was season 2 opening,,,but overall it was still an awesome and i totally love this dvd,,, its a must have for any power rangers fan,,,,,,,,,,,,,,POWER RANGERS FOR LIFE!!

I believe they say The Best Of Power Rangers Volume 2 is coming with only 10 Episodes in it.

But before they say talking about Volume 2 is not true. and I say "IT'S BECAUSE I WILL BELIEVE WITH VOLUME 2 IS COMING."

And let me tell about Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers in the episode named "Doomsday (Parts 1 & 2)" that was from Season 1 of MMPR. But Lord Zedd is not in this title, It was Rita Repulsa in MMPR Season 1.

But Lord Zedd in Might Morphin' Power Rangers Only in Season 2 & 3.

If The Best Volume 2 is coming. ¿Please just do it with Volume 3 is all about with my favorite Episodes?
And here are the episode in it.

The Best Of Power Rangers: Volume 3
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers "The Mutiny (Parts 1 & 3)"
Power Rangers Zeo "Another Songs And Dance"
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy "The Lost Galactabeasts (Parts 1 & 2)"

The Mutiny (Parts 1 & 3)

Tommy has to perform a musical number for class, but he's afraid he's a little off-key. With Tanya's help, and plenty of practice, Tommy hits all the right notes. But after Gasket's spell, things aren't going so well for our budding Enrico Caruso. It's a terrible thing--they can't talk; they must sing, even when they don't want to do so!

The Lost Galactabeasts (Parts 1 & 2)
A new villain named Deviot appears, with an army of three powerful Zords to battle the Rangers - Stratoforce, Centaurus, and Zenith. The only problem is, the Rangers' Galactabeasts refuse to fight them. As Deviot prepares for the final battle, the Rangers race to translate the Galaxy book, and find clues to help them defeat the new Zords.

Michael Jai White replaces Ving Rhames in Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, a sequel to the 2002 Undisputed, in which a heavyweight champion boxer is sent to prison as a ruse to get him to fight a champion pugilist on the slammer circuit. White is serviceable as "Iceman" Chambers, this time arrested in Russia (framed for drug possession) and sent to hard time in a horrible prison. There Iceman resists efforts to convince him to fight a champion kickboxer (Scott Adkins), but the system is determined to break him or get him to cooperate with the plan. This brutal adventure is pretty much by-the-numbers as follow-up features go, but it is generally exciting, and martial arts buffs will certainly enjoy the taut action sequences. --Tom Keogh

Description

Sequel to the 2002 film. This time, Heavyweight Champ George "Iceman" Chambers (White) is sent to a Russian jail on trumped-up drug charges. In order to win his freedom he must fight against the jailhouse fighting champ Uri Boyka (Adkins) in a battle to the death. This time he is not fighting for a title, he is fighting for his life!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-11

I really love the action in this movie. Some of the language however, is a little over the top. The purchasing experience was wonderful. Fast shipment and the condition was just as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2007-05-22

just like every other reviewer here, i was surprised by how good this movie was. i was in awe while watching how quick these fighters moved and i was extremely glad that someone recommended this to me because i wouldn't have even thought twice about it.

not much to say about the plot other then it has been done to death by other movies. don't let that discourage you, it's still well worth a watch. the only thing that i wished was different was that it wasn't a sequel to the first undisputed. the character differences of Iceman were unbelievably noticeable and that is why i would like to make it clear that i rated this movie as a movie all on it's own, not as a sequel. there were no references to the first one and if it weren't for the name of the champ as well as the movie title, you wouldn't even know they were one in the same.

4 out of 5 stars U II.......2007-03-21

I enjoyed this movie. I only bought it because of White, but it was not the greatest but pretty OK for entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars Undisputed II'Last man standing.......2007-03-09

A lot of action. All fights, axcept the final, were intence.

2 out of 5 stars undisputed 2.......2007-03-09

A pretty good movie, it was definetly better than I expected it to be, good enough for me to submit a review about it.

Perhaps the guiltiest of guilty pleasures, Crank Yankers has a way of overcoming one's ethical conflicts about prank phone calls with some very funny examples of the practice. Comic talents Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Tracy Morgan, Dave Chappelle, and others join the Touchstone Terrorists and musical duo Tenacious D in tormenting innocent people with ridiculous communications. Among the 10 episodes of season 1 is Sykes's outrageous call to an auto mechanic, claiming that someone at the guy's shop defecated in her car. Unlike many of the innocent recipients of Crank Yankers's harassment, the bemused mechanic turns the tables on the crazed woman and goads her into making more ridiculous claims. Elsewhere, a pet shop owner takes a call from an "old woman" (Susie Essman) complaining about her obscene parrot while the bird can be heard calling her "whore" in the background. Other choice moments include an apparently slow-witted comic-book fan (Jordan Rubin) pestering directory assistance for Batman's phone number, a "blind woman" (Lisa Kushell) applying for a job as a stripper (requiring her seeing-eye dog in the act), and a great bit in which a fellow (Denis Leary) convinces a sex-supply store salesman to pretend to be a pizza-delivery man in order to fool Leary's mom. Okay, some of the material in this set is downright cruel, but most of it is relatively harmless, addictive, and occasionally hilarious. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-11-06

Crank Yankers is an excellent comedy!! I highly recommend buying this DVD. It will provide hours of enjoyment!! Our whole family gathers around and just dies laughing at the crank calls and the puppets' actions.

5 out of 5 stars A great laugh!.......2006-01-20

I love watching this show... it is entirely too comical. I am a sucker for a good laugh and this show definitely feeds that appetite. I can't wait to collect all of the seasons, especially being that the show is cancelled. I'd have to say this is right up there with my other favorite animated comedies... South Park and King of the Hill.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2005-10-25

I love this show, bonus footage on the dvd confirms that the calls are real, and explains the puppeteering process. I can't wait for a third season, definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest shows next to south park!.......2005-08-04

I love this show. It is sad that they cancelled it, oh whell, maybe they ran out of people to call. anyway, some of my favorite calls on the first season are when elmer calls the fried chicken place and complains about chicken beaks in his chicken bucket. also when the monkey attack call. one more is when jimmy calls the adult toy store and his mom keeps bugging him on the phone. one last one is when helen calls the bag boy at the grocery store and asks him about the cookies and says that she likes him and mentions that she has denture and that comes in... well you know.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best it could have been for a DVD release.......2005-03-03

Crank Yankers is a great muppet looking type of show for the.... ummm.... more mature audience..... umm, no... lets just say it's not a kids show. A group of actors make (100% real) prank phone calls to unsuspecting suvillians and then the recorded conversation is then presented visualy with the puppets that reside in Yankerville.

All 10 episodes from season 1 are presented on 2 discs with 2 un-aired sketches and a documentry with some behind the scenes footage and shows you who the actors are playing the crank calling roles.

I do like the Crank Yankers, but season 1 was not the best, however it does have some pretty darn funny moments. But this DVD release could have been so much more. A pet peeve I have about the presentation tho is that it is 2 discs, and I am left wondering, why? On disc 1 there is 5 episodes that go for about an hour and 30 minintes. and about 5 short clips of other Comedy Chanel preveiws. Then on disc 2 there is the next 5 shows at the same length and 2 lousy sketches that wernt aired for good reason that are about 4 minutes each, and the documentry that goes for about 20 minutes. And all the preveiws combined could last more then 10 to 15 maybe 20 minutes. All of those combined are under 4 hours, a DVD will hold 4 hours of good standard quality. So why is it on 2 discs??? Also I hate the 2 seperate slim cases it comes in, inside of a cardboard box.

There isnt enough bonus footage included ont hese. The first sketch was not funny, the second one wasnt either, the documentry is ok, but we need much, much more to make this DVD super. At least the sketches are unsensoured, so there is no bleeping out words. It would have been real nice to have an option to not only just veiw the episodes individualy or all together, but have an option to view just the same charactor. I'd like to be able to just pick my favorite charactor (Special Ed) and just veiw his pranks continusly. I can't beleive there was only about 2 or 3 special ED pranks in season 1. Lets hope they have more to offer on season 2.

1 out of 5 stars GREEDY! GRDDY! GREEDY!.......2005-07-20

Regardless of how good is the second season I refuse to buy split seasons into volumes! We sould all show the network how unhappy we are from this greedy decision despite of the the fact that the second season was very good.

1 out of 5 stars so lame........2005-05-21

I love crank yankers, especially season two, but two or more volumes for one season is absolutely ridiculous. I refuse to buy into this type of greedy marketing. I hope that others will as well. this completely defeats the purpose of buying seasons on dvd. Lame! I was really looking forward to buying this set to.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy Central sucks, but it's still a great season.......2005-05-16

Yes, Comedy Central sucks eggs for splitting this season into two DVDs. Season Two IS the best season of this show by far, however, so I feel that the show should still be judged on its merits and not on the network's outrageous greed.

2 out of 5 stars Volume One? You must be crankin' me! .......2005-05-02

I've been a casual fan of Crank Yankers for a while, but why not put the whole season in one box set? Comedy Central has really been trying their hardest to cash in on their top shows at the consumer's expense, and it's apparently not going to stop here. This Yankerville collection is okay, despite that one obvious flaw, in that the second season is when the true wit of the show came into full form. We all know and love good ole Special Ed and love god Niles Standish (Don Knotts, move over), of which the inclusion of these skits are a standout. That, plus we get to see Mitch Hedburg calling shots.

Speaking of, where are the extras at? There is nothing "extra" about the special features on these discs. A couple of "unaired" calls to throw the dog a bone are here and little else, making me feel like I was cheated of the DVD experience. If you're a hardcore fan, then you might want to buy this, but for folks like me who simply get a kick out of the show while it's on, we might as well stick to cable. I will not be purchasing any future releases of Crank Yankers, not even volume two (which should be the best of the season, if memory serves me correctly).

3 out of 5 stars VOLUME 1??????.......2005-03-05

God I hate it when these companys release these volumes individualy, why cant they release all the episodes in one box set like they did with the first season???? This is gonnah be a rip off for sure.

"I've got that nice, tired old feeling," says Pa Frake near the end of the gentle, sunny 1945 film, State Fair. The Rodgers and Hammerstein music, commissioned while Oklahoma was still making musical-theater history, feels tired too, like the result of a hastily written score. The state of Iowa just can't seem to inspire the same quality music as its more memorable, southern cousin. Remember that State Fair gem "All I Owe Iowa"? Still, it is R and H, and "It Might as Well Be Spring" is here as well as some other decent ditties. There's a country-mouse feeling as the Frake family journeys to the big city for the annual harvest celebration. Young daughter Margy (Jeanne Crain) has her eye on something more exciting than her bore of a fiancé, while her brother meets a lovely big-band singer with a secret. But the bucolic, Old Farmer's Almanac feel is genuine, and it's most obviously a picture of a bygone era when someone expostulates gleefully, "You're gonna be the wife of a journalist!" Not a "don't miss" but not a dismiss either. --Keith Simanton

4 out of 5 stars Better than fair shake for animal lovers and romantics.......2007-06-16

Carnies, barkers, cutthroat contests, forbidden romance, and... cotton candy? Yes, it's all there at the fair in this intriguing microcosm of life in Depression-era Americana starring Janet Gaynor, Will Rogers, and some paradigm prize boars. It's intriguing mainly because it's a glimpse back to a movie made for adults before the Production Code came along and whitewashed everything. Lovers of anything porcine will also enjoy the screen time given to Blue Boy and his curly-tailed competitors in the hog show. State Fair was remade in 1945 and 1962. Based on the novel by Philip Strong.

1 out of 5 stars Why is this movie so popular?.......2007-05-31

I'm not sure why people love this movie? The songs are forgettable. The plot stinks, the actors are plain looking, and it drags on. I found this movie to be really boring. I love musicals, but this one stinks. There are so much better ones. You shouldn't waste your money. Your better off getting Annie Get Your Gun, My Fair Lady. Better R+H films are the King and I, Sound Of Music, and Oklahoma.

5 out of 5 stars Best Entertainment.......2007-01-10

This movie is one of the most enjoyable musicals written. The music is outstanding, the actors believable, and the comedic moments hilarious. I could watch State Fair a million times and never grow tired of it. Whether it's due to the nostalgic look at life "way back when" or the melodic tunes of Rogers & Hammerstein, I would recommend this movie for anyone who wants to escape daily life and relax for a just a little while.

4 out of 5 stars its a grand night for singing.......2006-11-09

one of the best of the 20th century fox musicals, featuring a terrific (tho truncated) score by rodgers & hammerstein, and an altogether charmer.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite 5 stars and here's why:.......2006-11-09

This is quite an anniversary DVD package ...excellent remastering, extras, etc. No need for me to say much more as I would only be echoing the already great reviews posted here. However, instead of the rather uninvolving 1962 version I would be much more interested in having the wonderful 1933 version starring Janet Gaynor and Will Rogers as a companion movie. As it stands this original version is, as far as I can tell, not currently available in a home video format and that is quite a shame. Thus a possible perfect 5 star anniversary DVD set is earning a very good 4 stars instead.

2 out of 5 stars "There's one problem with that. You can't kill Ruechang... but I can".......2007-04-03

In an imaginary world, a princess is on the run from the evil General Ruechang. Ruechang's top soldier played by Dolph Lundgren is sent to capture the princess so Ruechang can marry her. She falls in love with Dolph and convinces him to save her.

The movie is not badly directed, but the acting and story is really hard to sit through. The action is the only thing an Isaac Florentine movie should be watched for, and it doesn't disappoint in that area. Thouands of bullets fly, there are hundreds of explosions, and don't even try to keep a death count. While Florentine had not yet polished his action style (he used to direct Power Rangers), it is still fun to watch. The movie is low budget, but Florentine manages to make it feel like a big production. Where the low budget comes into play is with the actors. Dolph Lundgren as the main star greatly hampers everything. The editing is excellent, but Dolph just moves too slow. If he was at least a decent actor, his slowness could be excused, but if someone isn't a good actor in the first place, Isaac Florentine isn't going to be a big help. The final fight is not bad, but it is the best scene in the movie, and that is not saying much. There is also supposed to be something between Ruechang raising Dolph since he was a child, but they only tell you this in the story and the acting and directing job doesn't allow it to be believable.

1.5/5

The DVD from HBO Home Video has good picture quality and has short cast and crew biographies.

5 out of 5 stars The best independent film.......2006-01-26

Warchyled feels like he owes General Ruechang something just because he brought him into the army every since he was 10. What he don't know is Ruechang killed the King which is Princess Halo's father so he can gain more power but that's not enough so he wants to marry the Princess so badly defentaly not for love cause he keeps on beating the princess, she knows aabout her father's murder so she pretended to be sick and hold off the wedding and then escaped. Warchyled has his duty to go and bring her back.

1 out of 5 stars What's This Movie Trying to Say?.......2004-11-06

How come the arch-villain and the damsel-in-distress are the only Asian speaking roles in this otherwise virtually all-white film? With so few prominent Asian characters in U.S. media, the message seems to be that white men need to kill Asian men and rescue Asian women. This would be good on a double bill with Griffith's "Birth of a Nation."

If you want to see the "hot princess" (Rachel Shane, a.k.a. Valerie Chow) in a better film -- dancing around in her underwear no less -- check out Wong Kar-Wai's "Chungking Express."

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Worst.......2004-07-12

Do not purchase this DVD if it is priced over seven dollars, because it isn't worth it. However, you have to see this movie. It is so incredibly bad, and yet it takes itself seriously. I almost died laughing because
1. the acting is horrible
2. the dialogue is horrible
3. nothing makes sense--plot, setting, etc.
4. looks like it was created by a bunch of college film-majors under the influence of some substance

A beautiful piece of cinematic badness.
Five stars.
