Product Description
Madeleine (Lisa Harrow) wakes one Sunday to face her stagnant acting career and her failing marriage. That same winter day, computer-technician-turned-unemployed Oliver (David Suchet) wakes from one nightmare to another: he finds himself in a homeless shelter. Five of Mario Bava's best films are included in this box set, minus his forays into eroticism, like Blood and Black Lace. Still, the lines between sexual pathos and violence blur in these selections that influenced not only other famed directors of Giallo, such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, but also spawned the American golden age in horror, led by directors such as John Carpenter. Three black and white films here exemplify Bava's trademark use of chiaroscuro mixed with suspense-building cinematography first developed in early horror classics like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In the Hitchcock-inspired Evil Eye (1963), tourist Nora Davis (Leticia Roman) witnesses a murder but can't convince police of the crime. Kill Baby Kill! (1966) is the prototype for all little girl-ghost films. Dr. Paul Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) is recruited to solve the mystery of Villa Graps, where Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi) reanimates her dead daughter, Melissa, by killing innocent villagers. In Black Sunday (1960), the witch Princess Asa Vajda comes back from the dead to inhabit her look-alike, Katia, both played by Barbara Steele, the original femme fatale to which all brunette vamps, like Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) and Elvira, are indebted.

In Technicolor, Bava's fantastically rainbow-lit films underpin the director's fascination with connections between our world and those imagined. Black Sabbath (1963) is a trilogy hosted by Boris Karloff, who also stars as a Russian vampire in its segment, "The Wurdalak." "The Telephone," and "The Drop of Water," in which a nurse, Helen Correy (Jacqueline Pierreux), steals a ring then fears that her dead medium patient seeks revenge, are acute studies of guilt and paranoia. The Viking saga, Knives of the Avenger (1966), like Bava's Hercules in the Haunted World, spawned several sword and sorcery films, while protagonist Rurik's (Cameron Mitchell's) knife-throwing is indeed entertaining. Screened back to back, these films provide evidence of Bava's influence in the horror genre. Moreover, they reveal Bava's deep understanding of horror's many facets, whether sexually, psychologically, or physically based. —Trinie Dalton

    Description

More than a quarter of a century after his death, director Mario Bava remains one of international cinema's most controversial icons. Today his influence — marked by stunning visuals, daring sexuality and shocking violence — can still be seen in the works of Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Dario Argento and countless others in a legacy that extends far beyond the horror genre. This collection brings together 5 landmark movies from the first half of Bava's career — encompassing the original giallo, a bold Viking epic, and his three gothic horror masterpieces — featuring new transfers, original European versions, and exclusive featurettes to create the definitive celebration of one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally..........2007-06-23

Kill Baby Kill is a flic choc full of foreboding atmosphere that can only be appreciated in the original wide-screen aspect. Contrary to Amazon's misleading information, this version IS widescreen with the option to view in Italian w/subtitles. The dubbed version is there for those who dislike subtitles. I paid 19.99 for an earlier crappy edition so needless to say I find this collection offered at 19.99 to be a gift from Amazon. Clear colors and sound make this DVD a joy to watch; great nostalgic fun. I can't wait to view the other titles, also in original theatric aspect, a bonus for me. Am I in Horror Heaven? (I bought an extra set as a present for a relative; no borrowing, please.)

    5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-04-10

Sorry, but giving this set a bad rating just because the AIP-versions aren't included is stupid in my opinion.
This box includes 5 fantastic movies by Bava (yes, even "Knives Of The Avenger" is a great one) in overall amazing quality with very good bonus features. I believe there is a good reason that AB didn't include the different cuts of "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "3 Faces Of Fear": legal issues. If these are solved, hopefully we see these versions someday on DVD (though the only one that really interests me is "The Evil Eye". "Black Sabbath" would just be nice because of Karloff's own dubbing,
but everything else is clearly inferior to the italian version.)
Until then - enjoy what's IN this box, it is an amazing value for the cheap price. Of course many people who want to buy this, already may have different DVDs of some of the movies in there - so everyone must decide for themselves if it is worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Box Set.......2007-04-09

It's great to have all of these Mario Bava titles in one set. The transfers are really beautiful, and a revelation to those of us with memories of grainy 16mm TV prints. "Black Sunday's" monochrome atmosphere looks particularly lush in this set. "Kill Baby Kill" is a major upgrade to the crummy, desaturated DVD I have from Image.
But they really SHOULD have included BOTH US and Italian versions of the star attraction, "Black Sabbbath". Or at least cut in Karloff's actual voice to the Italian version! Why not re-edit the way it should be? I still rushed out to buy this set, but cannot give it five stars due to the pre-release publicity which stated BOTH Black Sabbath versions would be in the box set. Anchor Bay owes all of us an apology or a free DVD of the English version.

This is not what I was promised in the add.
I will never buy anything "Anchor Bay" again!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Pleased Overall.......2007-04-06

I'll echo what a previous reviewer wrote concerning the absence of the American International versions of "Mask of Satan" ("Black Sunday"), and "Three Faces of Fear" ("Black Sabbath"). I had fully anticipated their inclusion in this set. After watching the trailer, I know I'm going to need the AIP release "Black Sunday." What really sold me on this set was the opportunity to finally see and own the international edit of "Black Sabbath," and I was frankly unprepared for the vivid clarity of this transfer, and that of "Kill, Baby...Kill." It's great to finally have these films the way they were meant to be seen (however I'm not a fan of English or any other subtitles; English dubs would have been nice).

I haven't gotten around to watching "Knives of the Avenger" or "The Evil Eye," so I can't really weigh in on them. I've been generally pleased with the extras on these discs, the one caveat being the inclusion of the same trailers on each disc. Couldn't they have expanded this selection? As with so many other movie box sets in my collection, the package art's bizarre! Additionally, a decipherable illustration or two of Mario Bava would have been a fitting homage.

On VHS I have the AIP version of "Black Sabbath," and really enjoy it, but seeing this uncut Italian dub I can understand now why this was Bava's favorite film. It's very evident that AIP really went wild in the editing room--it's much more interesting in its original form. Having an educational commentary was also a selling point in my decision to shell out for this; honestly, I don't regret buying this set and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. If you've been curious about the works of Mario Bava, and you don't mind the subtitles, you won't see finer transfers for his three best films (BLACK SABBATH, BLACK SUNDAY, AND KILL BABY KILL) included here.

However, having said all that, I have to put in a plug for the production of an edition of "Kill Baby Kill" with its killer new WS transfer, but in English and with Tim Lucas' commentary accompanying it. Another highly worthy title of Bava's deserving a more respectable issue is "Planet of the Vampires." When these two finally get the treatment they deserve, a large void will have been filled.

Hasta, and May the Force be With you!

4 out of 5 stars On any sunday review.......2007-07-03

This is a good bike documentary that spans several different categories such as off road, flat track, some road, and endurance. Its nicely done, and features Steve McQueen, an avid motorcyclist and auto racer himself.

Its somewhat dated as it was made in the 70's but I like that era so it made it a little more special for me.

5 out of 5 stars THE motorcycle movie!.......2007-06-27

If you're already a motorcyclist, this movie is guaranteed to make you smile and yearn for a good ride. If you're not yet a motorcyclist, this movie might just turn you into one. Yes it's a bit dated, but that's half it's charm. Bruce Brown and son Dana make amazing movies, and On Any Sunday is typical of their laid back, well narrated, good time style. If you like this don't miss Step Into Liquid and From Dust To Glory. If you ride and this movie isn't on your video shelf, buy it now so you don't have to face the embarassment of telling you're riding buddies you don't know who Harvey Mushman is.

5 out of 5 stars A must see for all motorcycle riders........2007-05-25

I first saw this documentary back in 1970 when I was an active morotcycle rider myself. It was great. Covers all aspects of motorcycle competion in an often humorous way including some events that the average bike rider probably has not thought of. I don't ride motorcycles any more but On Any Sunday On Any Sunday is just as good today as it was back then. I consider it a must for all motorcycle fans and wantabees.

5 out of 5 stars Takes me back........2007-04-20

I grew up 4 miles from Saddleback Park and up the street from Escape Country motorcycle park (now an uppity housing tract). I saw this film as an 11 year old boy and just loved it. It's a little corny but it's very inspiring. I was only interested in Motocross and desert racing, but it gives a good look at all motorcycle racing. And those classic bikes that I could never afford when I was young! It blew me away how lightning fast Malcolm Smith was (and still is, I hear). I had already been hooked on dirt bikes for 2 years when this film came out so it just egged me on more. Ain't been the same since!

Rescue Heroes: The Movie is easily the brawny team's most exciting and entertaining animated story to date. Talk about a bad day at the office: When a volcano in Ecuador spouts an unknown element into the atmosphere, a series of mysterious lightning storms create worldwide havoc, from avalanches in Switzerland to bursting dams in Thailand to fires in American forests. The Rescue Heroes scamper over the globe saving lives, but nothing, it seems, can avert a planetary cataclysm once these storms merge in the atmosphere. Complicating matters is an unknown illness striking team leader Billy Blazes, and a bad case of arrogance and insubordination that grounds Rocky Canyon at a critical time. Rescue Heroes: The Movie is far and away more visually pleasing and dramatic than episodes from the Heroes' television show. CGI animation allows more creative angles, movement, and changing backgrounds--very handy for a story spread over much of the Earth. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Little boys love Rescue Heroes!.......2007-07-04

This DVD was purchased as a gift for my little boy. He had seen the Rescue Heroes cartoon on TV and loved it, so I thought he might like this full length movie. He loves it and will watch it time and again if we let him! I would recommend this movie, it can be pretty far fetched, but at least it has positive characters and teamwork themes.

3 out of 5 stars Excellence in Cross Selling.......2007-05-21

I just watched this film for the first time today. Yes, it was made entirely to promote a line of toys. It's an excellent example of Mercatilism at its best. Aesthetically, it would not exist except to sell a line of toys.

However, it was well-written and well executed. I was not at all embarassed to watch this with my primary school age niece and nephew. If I had any complaint, oddly enough, it was not about scripting or dialogue or voicing.

The special effects are not very good.

How odd - this movie is all about catastrophic occurrences and hair-raising disasters. And yet the animation sequences showing these disasters are not what they could or should be, much to my surprise.

If they'd invested more in these, they probably could have sold more toys.

Stephen Sondheim's landmark 1984 musical Sunday in the Park with George is a fictional representation of maverick French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat's efforts to create his masterpiece, Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte. Seurat, played by Mandy Patinkin, is obsessed with his work, to the frustration of his mistress, Dot (Bernadette Peters). Along the way, we meet many other characters--whoever happens to be in the park that Sunday--who eventually become part of the canvas.

Act 2 fast-forwards 100 years. Patinkin now plays Seurat's great-grandson, George, himself a frustrated artist. (Peters plays his grandmother--Seurat and Dot's daughter.) In the score's best-known song, "Putting It Together," George (and Sondheim himself) explains the hazards of trying to create art while also confronting the reality of having to pay for it. In a search for inspiration, George travels to the original island where Seurat created the painting. As with Sondheim and cocreator James Lapine's next collaboration, Into the Woods, Sunday is often criticized for redirecting its focus in the second act instead of letting the first act stand by itself as a complete work. The second act, however, is the emotional core of the show, as George confronts all the feelings his great-grandfather had repressed so many years ago.

Stephen Sondheim's brilliant score is remarkable for its combination of vivid colors (listen to his dots of sound that represent Seurat's pointillistic style of painting), character pieces, and sheer beauty. The cast is terrific, and the show, aced out of most of the 1984 Tony Awards by La Cage aux Folles, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Recorded before a live audience, Sunday is especially entertaining on video, as the staging elements bring out the full humor and inventiveness of the show, and it is astonishing to see the disparate characters form themselves into the elements of the familiar painting. So many great musicals are banished to the memories of those who attended live or--even worse--immortalized as inferior movies. Sunday in the Park with George is an absolute must-see for anyone interested in musical theatre, and a must-own for anyone with a passion for it. The DVD includes an audio track with commentary by Sondheim, Lapine, Patinkin, and Peters. --David Horiuchi

      Description

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte by Georges Seurat is one of the great paintings of the world, and in "Sunday in the Park with George," book writer James Lapine and composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim bring a story based on the work brilliantly to life. While the painting depicts people gathered on an island in the Seine, the musical goes beyond simply describing their lives. It is an exploration of art, of love, of commitment. Seurat connected dots to create images; Lapine and Sondheim use connection as the heart of all our relationships. Winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

4 out of 5 stars A must see for people who like to think!.......2007-06-27

This is typical Sondheim music, NOT typical Broadway music. Don't expect a toe tapping "dancing into the evening" kind of a show. You won't find it. What you will find, however, is a beautiful masterpiece that is solidly performed by some of the world greatest vocalists and actors.
The costumes and sets are just incredible and add so much to the show.
The main masterpiece, to me, is the lyrics. If you can listen closely and catch what is being said you will finish this film with a different perspective and have had your life enriched.
If you like to think, or would like to be challenged, watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sondheim, Patinkin, Peters.......2007-05-06

Probably only Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine and a brilliant cast could use one of the world's great paintings as the basis for an intelligent and entertaining musical drama about love, art, and commitment. The scenic design is exceptional.
      Buy it.

      5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY SUNDAY.......2007-04-13

Every now and then you come across a work, say a movie, a book, a piece of music, which moves you so entirely, you will never look at life quite the same ever again. SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, the DVD, a staged production of the Stephen Sondheim, James Lapine Broadway musical is an unconventional show, sometimes more in the tradition of a Gilbert & Sullivan opera, in that the music is truly, as joked in the musical's book, 'variations on a theme'; one long sweep of music that climaxes in a powerful finale, bound to shake up the heart, and enlighten the mind.

The synopsis of the play is bound to chase some away, as it did me for many years. It is a fictional account of real life 19th Century Parisian artist, Georges Seurat, and his attempts to finish his masterwork, "Sunday Afternoon On The Isle of La Grande Jatte", as the Paris art community ridicules the work in progress, and stands defiantly against the finished piece. During Act 2, you are rudely whisked away 100 years into the future, where a monstrous piece of art; a metallic iron lung, shell-like object, is beaming laser beams and playing new age-like music to a less than enthusiastic crowd of artists and would-be admirers. It is the work of the great grandson of Georges Seurat, who faces the same doubt and betrayal from his peers.

The sad history of the artwork, brought to the front in a matter-of-fact way during a presentation during Act 2, in which aged daughter, (Bernadette Peters), and great grandson, (Mandy Pantinkin), recount the likes of Renoir and other famous painters of the era, retracting their entries into an art exhibit when it is learned, "Sunday Afternoon On The Isle...", would be included, brings characteristic emotional depth to the painting which is now regarded as a treasured piece of art, and indeed the painting is the star of the show, even taking a majestic bow during the closing curtain call.

It sounds dry, but this is all very light-hearted, with traditional musical comedy amusements, which surmount to a power sucker punch of sadness, humanity and beauty, as the cast gathers for the final song. Get out your handkerchiefs. The cast is exemplary; Mandy Pantinkin delivers an alarmingly spiritualized tenor proclaiming the beauty of art, sure to send shivers your way, and Bernadette Peters, is aglow with an empathetic characterization, full of conviction and grace, rarely realized in a musical.

Just a quibble. An annoying, but tolerable 'feed-front', (the dialogue is heard just slightly before it is spoken, it seems to happen often in these taped DVDs), can be heard distractingly at the quiter moments. Mandy Pantinkin, Bernadette Peters, Stephen Sondheim and writer James Lapine provide audio commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Sunday is Sondheim Perfection!.......2007-03-16

Don't miss this elegant, heartfelt show. Listen to each phrase and learn..about art, life and love. For 35 years of my life, Sondheim has been an inspiration. Check him out!

5 out of 5 stars Yes of course!.......2007-01-27

Of course all Sondheim fans should have this in their collection. Really a MUST HAVE. Then there's the Mandy and Bernadette thing and we all love them don't we! (If not, then maybe not for you!) Lovely, poignant and one of his best works, so it's lovely to have a DVD version of it !

With breathtaking verisimilitude, Bloody Sunday posits an immediate, you-are-there re-creation of Ireland's most controversial contemporary tragedy. From dusk to dawn, the events of January 30, 1972, are presented in convincing verité fashion; by employing rapid fade-to-black transitions, director Paul Greengrass approaches two perspectives with equal anticipation of potential disaster, based on facts as reported in Don Mullan's politically influential book Eyewitness Bloody Sunday. Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) is, ironically, a Protestant Member of Parliament, leading a peaceful but tensely expectant civil rights march through the Catholic "bogside" of the city of Derry, in protest of the British practice of internment without trial. He watches in horror as his throng of unarmed protesters splinters against British paramilitaries who impulsively open fire. No question where Greengrass's sympathies lie (heard but not seen, the first shots are British), but despite charges of inaccuracy and bias, Bloody Sunday will likely stand as the definitive cinematic representation of that horrible day when deadly confusion reigned supreme. (U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" plays over the closing credits; any other choice would have been blasphemous.) --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars strong film making.......2007-04-16

The director of Flight 93 shows his talent is no fluke with this mesmerizing retelling of this horrific peace march.

      5 out of 5 stars Great film.......2007-03-07

This is a superb movie and one that I will use in future training for my soldiers and officers. Having done riot control on several occasions I can tell you that the military scenes are absolutely realistic. The movie does very well portraying the chos and uncertainty of this type of operation.

The massacre scenes went on for too long. The actual shooting that day didn't last more than a few minutes. The number of soldiers that were present could have inflicted 26 casualties on a crowd like that in a matter of seconds.

Its so easy to lose control in chaos like that. Leaders really have to keep an eye on their people to keep them from getting trigger happy.

Having said that - the marchers don't get much sympathy from me. "Let's go throw rocks at the Army.... that'l show em." or "There's a riot 200 meters away from us but we'll just stand here and listen to our less than bright parade leader because we know that riot can't effect us...." Real Darwin award stuff.

When you do something like that you place your life in the hands of the guy with the gun you're throwing rocks at. Your only hope is that his discipline holds.

This movie is a great tutorial on what happens when that doesnt occur

4 out of 5 stars you may have to remind yourself that you are not watching actual footage..........2007-01-22

This film does a great job of capturing the spirit and atmosphere of this historical event. The movie was made in 2002 and the film is so well-made that you may have to remind yourself that it is a re-enactment and not actual footage. The acting is superb and based on what others have reported the movie has kept to a genuine protrayal of the actual story.

      2 out of 5 stars Bloody sunday.......2006-11-10

Not really up to my expectation and I'm not impressed, there was no historical background on the Bloody Sunday, mainaction in the movie were streetfightings, killings etc. Would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Bloody Sunday .......2006-11-06

The best movie I have seen in a long time Have watched it a few times and never get tried of it It brought home what the people of Ireland had to go through and the heartache

5 out of 5 stars The animation is so life like similar to 3D.......2007-05-16

The animation is spectacular, I wish these type of cartoons were made when I was a kid. My 19 month grand-daughter loves this video, and the music too. I'm not too sure what those "other" reviewers are talking about when they state that the graphics are scary, and wishing they made them the old-style way, to them I say "grow up with the times and enjoy, it's only a movie, and if that's your opinion be real, it's only a cartoon, you're judging waaaayyy to harshly.. I wish they made more movies like this, it looks spectacular on my 50" Toshiba that I had also bought through Amazon, saving me a great big bundle.

      5 out of 5 stars Care Bears - Journey to Joke-a-Lot .......2006-11-05

My granddaughter loves it.She watches it 2 to 3 times a day,Need i say more.

5 out of 5 stars Don't reject the new in favor of the old!.......2006-07-18

My three year old absolutely loves both of the CGI animated Care Bear movies and we sing along to the songs together. The new soundtracks are catchy and have great messages/themes. The story line for this particular movie is appropriate, well paced (not too fast) and provides a valuable lesson--be careful how you treat others, and sensitive to other's feelings. I would strongly recommend this movie, without hesitation, even if Funshine Bear did "become" a boy...I view all of the Care Bears as sex neutral and my 3 year old is oblivious, regardless. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My daughter loves it!.......2006-03-22

My two year old loves those carebears, especially Journey to Joke-alot. It is funny and she loves to dance along to the songs!

      1 out of 5 stars I am a carebear fanatic BUT..........2006-03-15

...I will have to shoot myself if I am forced to watch this again. The animations are very annoying, the court jesterish feel is very annoying and the portrayal of Funshine Bear (my favorite) as a pre-teenaged boy jokester is NOT my idea of what carebears is about. I was NOT impressed with this movie!

"Gangway for de Lawd God Jehovah!" Despite racial stereotypes and a naive, backward vision of "Negro Heaven," The Green Pastures remains an important, controversial, and still-entertaining milestone in African American popular culture. Because this 1936 spiritual musical embraces all of the black stereotypes that were prevalent in its time, Warner Home Video has appropriately included a disclaimer regarding the political incorrectness of the film's then-common racial prejudices, stressing the importance of acknowledging these stereotypes as opposed to pretending they never existed. With this understanding, The Green Pastures still endures as a classic American folk drama, based on Marc Connelly's Pulitzer Prize-wining Broadway production (suggested by Roark Bradford's southern sketches "Ol' Man Adam an' His Chillun"), in which several Old Testament stories are performed as they might be imagined by black Sunday-school child in the Depression-era South. It's an all-black vision of heaven as a perpetual fish-fry, full of black angels and cherubs eating catfish and smoking 10-cent "see-gars," where "De Lawd" (Rex Ingram) presides over the tales of creation: Noah and the Flood; Joshua at Jericho; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; Adam and Eve; Moses and Pharaoh; etc. With heavenly accompaniment by the Hall Johnson Choir, these Bible stories play like a lavish fantasy revival, and while the stereotypical images and all-black colloquialisms may seem absurdly regressive from the perspective of latter-day enlightenment, there's no denying that The Green Pastures is still a transcendently joyful celebration of faith. As a relic of its time, it's a vivid (and for some, still uncomfortable) reminder that racial stereotypes--even in a joyful gospel context--can teach us a lot about where we've been, and where we've yet to go. --Jeff Shannon

      On the DVD
The Green Pastures is accompanied by an excellent DVD commentary in which actor/director LeVar Burton and African American cultural scholars Herb Boyd and Ed Guerrero (author of Framing Blackness: The African American Image in Film) place the film in proper historical context. Burton candidly explains why he could never watch Green Pastures in its entirety until he gained the detached perspective of an actor/director, while Boyd and Guerrero relate many of the precedents and milestones that inform such '30s-era movies as The Green Pastures and Cabin in the Sky. Entertaining and informative, their commentary is essential listening for anyone seeking an enlightened perspective on racial stereotypes of the past. Also included, for similar historical appreciation, are two Vitaphone shorts from the early 1930s: "Rufus Jones for President" is a lively "two-reeler" (20 minutes) in which the 7-year-old future Rat Pack star Sammy Davis Jr. sings and dances (along with blues great Ethel Waters) as a young boy who fantasizes about becoming President of the United States. "An All-Colored Vaudeville Show" delivers just what the title promises: a stage revue of black performers including Broadway star Adelaide Hall and the legendary tap-dancing Nicholas Brothers. Both shorts represent all that was good--and bad--about Depression-era show business as a vibrant showcase for African American performers and the social conditions through which they endured. --Jeff Shannon

      Description

"You gotta git your minds fixed," the rural preacher tells Sunday School children. And the best way to do that fixin' is from Old Testament stories narrated by the preacher, played by a black cast, backed by the joyful gospel sounds of the Hall Johnson Choir and based on Marc Connelly's folk-themed Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Rex Ingram portrays de Lawd, who has a 100,000 things to do before any human's next breath - like instructing Noah (Eddie Anderson); taking counsel with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; or teaching Moses tricks to dazzle Pharaoh. Get your mind fixed for The Green Pastures. It's a film of its time. But like all great art, it transcends it.

I wasn't interested in "The Green Pastures", I wanted the historically significant short with Sammy Davis jnr and Ethel Waters and the item with the Nicholas Brothers in the other film. They were worth the price of the disc. I'm not Alexander Wall.

I have always wanted this movie on DVD and now I have it. I have always found it entertaining. I loved Green Pastures years ago and still love Green Pastures today. Looking past the stereotypes, anyone who has a love for old classic movies will enjoy this one.

I already own VHS Tape of The Green Pastures since 1999 and like the fact that it is offered on DVD. I LOVE this story version of the BIBLE. It's a must HAVE.

5 out of 5 stars Touching retelling of old testament stories.......2007-04-14

This is one of those black-cast movies made in an era when racism was the Hollywood standard and, like all such films, it can't be judged by today's standards without missing something important and beautiful. When watching it one can focus on the injustices of the culture reflected in it or on the fine actors and performances preserved in it. I bought it for love of the latter. It's amusing to hear one resident of heaven compliment another on the beauty of his wings (I won't give away the punch line) and it's touching to seethe relationships between the children and the adults. I don't want to say too much but I am glad I bought it and will continue to search out other such films as they become available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Marc Connelly genius, wonderful acting and song.......2007-01-17

De Lawd must have directed me to this movie.
My Grandpa (1904-1992) did Marc Connelly's (author & director, 1890-1980) taxes for many years. Grandpa told me that once a year when he would go "into the City" (NYC) to Marc Connelly's apartment to get whatever it is that accountants get to do taxes, that Mr. Connelly would fix lunch for him. I had never heard of Marc Connelly when Grandpa told me this back in the mid-1970s. Only recently, I became curious about Grandpa's acquaintance with Marc Connelly and stumbled upon "The Green Pastures" DVD. Grandpa told me about the book, but not the movie. If I'd known about the movie, I would have sought it out much sooner.

My wife and I were spellbound by this movie. It is quite a feat for its day. The acting is quality stuff. Some people may be offended by the quasi-plantation dialect and settings. But the storyline and achievement of the movie is best absorbed when one can move on and accept that "The Green Pastures" is a product of its time. The Old Testament message interpreted in the movie is both informative and thought provoking. For me, the most thought provoking part is with the punch line about how God came about acquiring his quality of mercy. (The word "mercy" is pronounced "moy-cie" in the movie's spoken dialect, which is Brooklyn-ese, not quasi-plantation or anywhere else Southern, then or now.)

The Negro spiritual choir's singing in the soundtrack will give you goosebumps. They are as a legion of angels singing. Today's Gospel radio or mega-church bands and voices are "noisy gongs and clanging cymbals" compared with the glorious sound of the choir in "The Green Pastures." Ooh, maybe I shouldn't have said that.

Enjoy "The Green Pastures" with sense of anticipation and humor. This sweet movie has it all and makes me thankful that it was made.

The magic of music, the power of love, the evils of money, and the horror of genocide are the weighty themes tackled in Gloomy Sunday, a moving German-Hungarian film from director/co-writer Rolf Schubel. Released theatrically in 1999, it's said to have been "inspired by actual events," and it is true that the title song, written in the '30s by Rezso Seress (with Hungarian lyrics by Laszlo Javor), was a worldwide hit in its day; it's also a fact that the song has since been covered dozens of times, by artists ranging from Billie Holiday to Bjork and Elvis Costello. As for the suggestion that "Gloomy Sunday" was banned after being connected to multiple suicides, including the composer's, that's a bit more dicey. In any case, it plays a pivotal role in the love story set in Budapest during the ascension of the Third Reich and the onset of the Holocaust. Restaurant owner Laszlo (Joachim Krol) is in love with Ilona, his hostess (Erika Marozsán), a dark-eyed beauty who plays men as easily as Horowitz plays "Chopsticks"; she loves him as well, but that doesn't mean she won't welcome Andras (Stefano Dionisi), the restaurant's new piano player, into her bed as well. Everyone seems to handle that with admirable equanimity, at least until the young German Hans (Ben Becker) inserts himself into the scene. Having been rejected by Ilona, Hans throws himself into the Danube, only to be rescued by Laszlo; when he assures his savior that "We'll meet again," we know that's not necessarily a good thing. Indeed, when Hans returns to Budapest, he's a Nazi colonel. Things get hairy in a hurry after that: Laszlo is Jewish, Ilona still doesn't want Hans, and we're left to discover if the German officer is either another Oskar Schindler or a heartlessly venal criminal loyal only to himself. All of this is played out against the backdrop of a lovely city, with costumes, art direction, and a palette of rich, warm colors creating a convincing period feel. The DVD has no bonus features, but a cursory search of the 'net will turn up multiple versions of the title tune, a sweet but melancholy melody that sounds, as one character puts it, "as if someone were saying something you don't want to hear" but know to be true. --Sam Graham

      Description

Gloomy Sunday, winner of major German film awards and an art-house favorite that ran 70 weeks in Boston, hits all the right notes with its poignant, glowingly shot tale set in Budapest during the Holocaust and, like Schindler's List and The Pianist, filled with the passion and pain of that tragic era. The song itself - recorded by Billie Holliday and other greats - is the stuff of legend, reportedly having a fateful real-life impact similar to that shown on screen. But it's love's power that is ultimately at the heart of this acclaimed film. And from the opening scene to the deft twist ending, that power is extraordinary.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Handsomely crafted WW2 romantic intrigue.......2007-04-24

GLOOMY SUNDAY is the name of a bittersweet song that drives listeners to suicide in World War Two Hungary. And as more people hear the song, more and more people kill themselves and also flock to a Budapest restaurant to listen to the song played on a piano. GLOOMY SUNDAY is also the title of a handsomely crafted and intelligent, fact-based 1999 German film from director/co-writer Rolf Schubel. It has a compelling blending of CASABLANCA, SCHINDLER'S LIST, and Polanski's THE PIANIST, as a Jewish waitress named Ilona (Erika Marozsan) is romantically torn between the restaurant's Jewish manager Laszlo (Joachim Krol), the German pianist Andras (Stefano Dionisi) who composes "Gloomy Sunday", and a Nazi commandant named Hans (Ben Becker). (The song was really composed in the 1930's. I am not sure when Billie Holliday scored a vocal hit with it in America.)

But then Hans attempts suicide and is saved by Laszlo around the same time that Nazis invade Hungary and flock to the Budapest restaurant. They, too, are fascinated by this piano tune that drives people to destruction. The Nazis, especially Hans, get romantically involved with Ilona and pretty soon are trading sexual favors in exchange for freeing Jews headed to Auschwitz. The movie becomes an intoxicating blend of romance, suspense, and despair. Schubel's film is, according to the back of the DVD box, an art house blockbuster that ran 70 weeks in Boston (!).

Who will be alive at the end of GLOOMY SUNDAY? Certainly Ilona as our heroine. But I believe we have a prologue and epilogue here that is set decades after the war--and still in Hungary. The film supposedly has a twist ending, which I don't understand. But it is always a gorgeously made movie, lushly photographed by Edward Klosinski, designed by Csaba Stork and Volker Schaefer, and costumed by Andrea Flesch. Written by director Schubel and Ruth Toma, this powerful and romantic movie is in German with English subtitles. Unrated; I would give it an "R" for sex scenes with full nudity and Holocaust violence. It is for adult audiences, not children.

In my friendship circle this has become a "cultfilm".. to view again and again. It is well acted, supspenseful and with great emotional feelings. characters are well developed and the scenery is fabulous. The back ground of World War II is scary and believable. I highly recomment it.

5 out of 5 stars An unforgettable, achingly beautiful masterpiece of cinema.......2006-11-21

Gloomy Sunday (Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod) is a hauntingly beautiful gem of a movie, a unique blending of romance, drama, and tragedy all compressed under the oppressive weight of history. This film lives and breathes, transporting you back to 1930s Budapest with beautiful cinematography, a fascinatingly brooding musical score, and the most human of characters. Released in 1999, I have no idea why this German-Hungarian film took so long to make its way to American audiences or why it was not rewarded with an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Those of us fortunate enough to have seen it have certainly appreciated it. Just asks the folks in Boston, who kept the film running for a record-breaking 70 weeks in 2004-2005. If you have a heart and soul, this film will touch and haunt them both for a long, long time.

The title refers to a song written by one of the characters, but the historical reference is to a song by Hungarian composer Rezso Seress which became known, especially in America, as the Hungarian Suicide Song. Supposedly, many souls took their own lives after basking in the emotional power of this melody, but there is virtually no corroboration for the stories that have grown up around it. (One should keep in mind that the era of the 1930s was a time of worldwide economic depression, in which the Nazi menace cast its foreboding shadow over Europe and eventually the entire world.) In the film, Gloomy Sunday is basically a love song, written by a pianist named Andras (Stefano Dionisi) for the absolutely captivating Ilona (Erika Marozsan). Ilona is the hostess of an elegant restaurant in which Andras finds employment as an in-house pianist. He falls for the dark-eyed beauty just as Laszlo (Joachim Krol), the restaurant owner did, and the three soon develop a strange but very close relationship. Jealousy sometimes arises, as Ilona shares herself with both me, but both Andras and Laszlo would rather share her than lose her. I should point out here that Ilona in no way comes across as a loose or in any way disrespectable woman. She's an angelic creature, a woman with whom men constantly fall in love, including a shy, awkward German youth named Hans Wieck (Ben Becker), who leaves Budapest broken-hearted but returns several years later as an important Nazi colonel.

Laszlo, Andras, and Ilona grow ever closer over these same years. Andras finds instant fame as the composer of Gloomy Sunday yet still struggles to understand just what his song is trying to say. When he despairs over the staggering numbers of suicidal men and women who left life serenaded by his mysteriously cursed song, Laszlo and Ilona are there to rescue him emotionally. Their mutual bond is eternal and true. All too soon, however, the trio's strangely enchanted world begins to come apart. The restaurant is still prospering and "the song" is still being played every night by popular demand, but the arrival of the Nazis in Hungary casts an increasingly foreboding shadow on the lives of these incredibly captivating characters. Fear takes on a palpable presence in their lives as Jews are rounded up and transported to concentration camps. Only Hans affords them, especially Laszlo (for he is Jewish), any kind of safety net in this oppressive and increasingly dangerous environment.

The dogs of greed, betrayal, and pure evil inevitably come to have their day, making for an emotionally jarring final half hour of this film. The subtlety with which the most painful blows strike only makes the tragedy all the more intense - and instructive. That subtlety carries over to the ultimate conclusion, which could not have been presently more effectively.

I could go on and on about the unsurpassed strengths and natural beauty of this film, but words can never communicate my true passion for this film. Gloomy Sunday approaches cinematic perfection, in my humble opinion, and I would urge any and every person to experience its emotional power for himself/herself.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting period piece doesn't quite gel.......2006-11-17

This great-looking movie is wonderfully cast and directed, but the script is a bit of a mess. It attempts to combine the (mostly true) story of the infamous "Hungarian Suicide Song" with a complicated love triangle and the takeover of Budapest by the Nazis. However, the song thread is pretty much abandoned as soon as the Nazis appear, and the love triangle goes out the window soon thereafter.

Still, there are moments of real suspense and poignance, and the cast is a pleasure to watch. Not a great movie, but certainly worth a rental.

      3 out of 5 stars "That song, it's a curse.".......2006-11-15

"Gloomy Sunday", directed by Rolf Schubel, and based on a novel by Nick Barkow, is a beautifully realized film set in WWII Budapest. The plot concerns the relationship that forms between Jewish restaurant owner Laszlo (Joachim Krol), his hostess and lover Ilona (Erika Marozsan) and the restaurant's pianist Andras (Stefano Dionisi). Ilona is gradually drawn to the moody Andras, and they become lovers too. When a brief rivalry springs up between Laszlo and Andras, Ilona threatens to leave, and the result is that both men agree to share Ilona.

Andras writes a melancholy melody "Gloomy Sunday" that becomes a worldwide hit--just around the time the Nazis move into Budapest and start shipping off Jews to concentration camps. The relationship between Ilona, Laszlo and Andras is challenged by German officer Hans Wieck (Ben Becker)--a would be suitor of Ilona's she dismissed in the past, but who now is convinced his German uniform gives him certain rights and privileges.

The film has a strong beginning, and a surprising ending, but falls down somewhat in the middle. While this is ostensibly a tragedy, the film has a weak spot that lends itself, unfortunately, to absurdist humour. The song written by Andras supposedly leads to a rash of suicides throughout Europe, and while this is actually based on some truth, the film ladles this phenomenon with such over-the-top drama, that a certain amount of humour is inadvertently created--something that's not supposed to happen when tragedy is afoot. It's difficult to take the rash of suicides and the erotic triangle between Laszlo, Andras, and Ilona seriously, and the fact that the film focuses on the superficial aspects of this complicated relationship does not help.

The film, however, is strongest when examining the fate of the Hungarian Jews, and in spite of the film's heavy dose of syrupy romanticism, the film contains some extremely effective and moving scenes. There's a sense of horrible fatalism throughout this atmospheric film, and unfortunately it all comes true. In German and Hungarian with English subtitles--displacedhuman
