Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.
The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy
Description
John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!
Customer Reviews:
Energetic high school musical set in the 1950s.......2007-07-06
Remember those school productions of "Grease" - well this is the film that everyone remembers, based on the long-running Broadway show.
The songs are deliberately cheesy, the acting over the top, the teenagers look about 30, but it's all pretty good fun.
Comparing this to "High School Musical", which has real teenagers one realises that "Grease" is not about teenagers at all but a 1950s that probably never existed. Indeed "Grease" was part of the 1950s nostalgia phenomenon of the 1970s along with "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" that continued with films such as "Back to the Future" and "Stand By Me" in the 1980s. America was harking back to a kinder, simpler, innocent era post-Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Watergate.
"Grease" still holds up as decent entertainment today.

This moie came out when I was out of HighSchool....I LOVED it then and it's been one of my favorites...The music is terrific and John Travolta and Olivia Newton John did an incredible job as the two main characters in the movie.......

My DVD arrived very quickly, as usual. A welcomed addition to our collection of classics.
A classic, must have for every collection.......2007-05-23
This movie is just a classic and always a good time to watch. It's pretty harmless and just puts you in a good mood. I saw this movie about 25 times when I was growing up and it came out, so I was pleased to see it on a DVD so I can watch it and not wear out the tape!

Too often, sequels to popular films simply rehash the original film; call it the carbon-copy syndrome. Grease 2 suffers from no such malady, having almost nothing to do with the original film. Sure, it focuses on teens at Rydell High, the imaginary school from the first film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. But other than a few of the teachers, all of the characters are new and so are the songs--and more's the pity. By the time Grease hit the big screen, it already had had almost a decade as a theatrical musical, more than enough time to hone its mock-rock & roll score. But this sequel, which stars among others a then-unknown Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield, and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter), has music that's neither fish nor fowl, neither rock nor Broadway. Meanwhile, the plot is a reversal of the first film, in which a cool guy fell for a square girl. In this one, the square is newcomer Caulfield, who catches the eye of tough girl Pfeiffer and her Pink Lady gang. The appearance of such pseudo-stars of the '50s, like Tab Hunter, is supposed to lend a nostalgic kick, but let's just say that Grease 2 slides almost instantly into obscurity. --Marshall Fine
Description
The sequel to the 1978 hit movie, GREASE 2 is set in the early 1960's when a new British student, Michael Carrington (Caulfield), rides into town and joins the ranks at Rydell High. A book nerd who immediately falls for the blonde bombshell leader of the Pink Ladies, Stephanie Zinone (Pfeiffer), Michael finds himself smitten, but out of his element. Knowing that the Pink Ladies are the hippest clique of chicks at Rydell, who only date their equals in coolness - the T-Birds, Michael sets out to turn from a geek to a greaser to see if he can win the gorgeous Stephanie's heart.
Customer Reviews:
Just plain TRASH.......2007-07-04
Grease 2 in my opinion was a horrible sequel. The first Grease is my all time favorite. Grease 2 will never be as good. The music sucked, and the acting was horrible. I advise all to buy The first original Grease, don't waste your money on this garbage!!!
25 years later...grease 2, not bad..........2007-06-04
the original grease will always be one of my all-time favorites. watching grease 2 after 25 years, i enjoyed the singing, dancing and storyline.
michelle p. & maxwell c. made a good couple. naturally, in seeing a few familiar rydell faces, i wished some others were still around.
anyway, the only main issue that bothered me was how the T-Birds were portrayed, they were weak.
I remember the original T-Birds being a little tougher than that.
So, I was a bit disappointed in how they were portrayed this time around...
Other than that, I enjoyed the movie...
Grease 2 slides into 4 stars.....barely.......2007-04-15
I just saw this move for the first time in wide screen and it is a much different experience I must say. I think I have figured it out. In some other reviews I think Batricia Birch should have just stayed with the songs and the numbers. I think they should have got another director to get the rest of the movie off the ground. It is somewhat of a good story. I can see why it would be reversed (a guy trying to get the girl, instead of the other way around). You see Eugine in the beginning of the movie stumbling out of the bus. Well if he were a senior in the first one then why is he in the second one???? Also Frenchie is not with the Pink Ladies at all. You see her by herself or just briefly with the other pink ladies in school. I think the chemistry between Stephanie and Michael were worked well together. The songs were written by the same people that wrote the songs for the first movie. So really the bottom line is that they should have gotten a different director altogether. I know I know it is not the first one. But sequels are usually not, but they usually have connections to the first. Grease 2 tried to accomplish with Frenchie and the Tbirds, Pink ladies and all. I am glad they were able to have Eve Arden, Sid Ceaser, plus other great actors of the 50s and 60s like Tab Hunter. Is this movie cheesy???? Yes
Is it done in less than expected direction???? Yes. Does it have good songs?? Yes (Cool Rider, Reproduction, We'll Always be Together, Girl for all Seasons/Turn Back, and Back to School). The song skits themselves are good and with the same flavor of the first one. After all Kiddies, Patricia Birch did do the choreography for both.
So, in closing, this movie made it to my DVD collection if for that reason alone. If Grease 2 is going to stink then let it reek. If it has its moments of good cute fun then let it have that. I think if you loved the first Grease then I think you should at least give this one a try.
Absolutely Horrible.......2007-04-11
As a sequel to a mega-hit movie this was a stinker. The thing I loved about the original was how it captured the late 50's with music, custumes, and attitudes and yet this sequel seemed to fall flat on it's face in all those categories. The songs are so out of place with lots of 80's ish themes being played during certain scenes. The producer couldn't even focus on one time period with the music which ranged from 50's, 60's, 70's and even 80's metal at one point. The mood and feel of the movie was wrecked by this alone, without including the fact that the songs themselves were utterly boring. One or two songs were ok, like "Reproduction" and the biker song by Michelle Pfeiffer.
If you buy this thinking it's a real sequel to Grease you are sadly mistaken. There's not alot in common at all with the first movie other then a few characters and the "T-birds" and "Pink Ladies". The plot is totally cheesy also. I'm not sure what I hated worst, the fact that some of the hairstyles and music reminded me more of the 80's or the predictable plot of the movie. "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" , "The Breakfast Club" & "Sixteen Candles" are so much better movies at representing the 80's if you are looking for a movie like that. The last thing I wish to see is a movie suposedly set in 1961 is for it to coming off in all respects to be 1982.
When I watch movies like this, I like to be transported back to a place in time and feel the period completely. Unfortunately Grease 2 leaves me wondering exactly what time period it was supposed to represent.
The only saving grace of this movie is watching a young Michelle Pfeiffer with brown eyes instead of her usual and what I thought was her natural blue eyes.
It's not Grease, it's lard!.......2007-04-07
Terrible follow up to the first movie. This movie does not hold a candle to the first classic movie staring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.
The acting is bad, and it is not worth the money.
It belongs where most grease belongs ... in a bucket under the sink.

Bought it for my 17 year old grand daughter, who loves Grease, she loves it.
Great Movies.......2007-06-08
This moie came out when I was out of HighSchool....I LOVED it then and it's been one of my favorites...The music is terrific and John Travolta and Olivia Newton John did an incredible job as the two main characters in the movie.......
Grease.......2007-06-01
My DVD arrived very quickly, as usual. A welcomed addition to our collection of classics.
A classic, must have for every collection.......2007-05-23
This movie is just a classic and always a good time to watch. It's pretty harmless and just puts you in a good mood. I saw this movie about 25 times when I was growing up and it came out, so I was pleased to see it on a DVD so I can watch it and not wear out the tape!

Great 60's High School Camp.......2004-11-30
I bought these movies with the same expectations that i usuallly have SWV's cheasy goodness. But I actually turned out to like these movies. The soundtrack is big band jazz which seems to hit great big notes on a character's folley. The acting is pretty good. Espiecally the High school caeser in High Scool Caeser. ( he reminds me of Ray Liotta.) But to sum up, i highly recommend this set, and i will show to my friends along with the beast that killed women ( also from Something wWierd Video)

A Bad (and predictable) Movie...with a good sound track........2007-03-30
This movie is so predictable and cheaply made, but Reggie Perkins did an excellent job singing "High School Caesar." He also sang the title "Date Bait Baby". Reggie and I worked in Miami Beach area during the 50's Rock n Roll days. His singing is good....(when he's good,) but it can be bad when he's bad. For instance, I played keyboard and Reggie had a terrible habit of starting a song in the wrong key. Once he got started there was no way of getting him in the right key. Our band, "The Rockin Maniacs" solved the "off key" problem by giving him strong introductions to every song he sang. That did the trick and soon his singing was very good. Like I said, "Bad movie" but I think Reggie did a good job in the opening credits singing "High School Caesar". Personally, I thought the music in "Date Bait Baby" was better.

High energy, fast moving .......2007-03-20
This movie is one i had wondered about finding for years. I was an extra in it when i was 17 years old back when it was filmed in Chilicothe, MO. in 1956. It is not as I remember but then that has been many years ago. I thought that I would not even be found in it but I was, just in one scene toward the end but it made it wortth every cent I spent. My best friend was also in the movie, she is in 2 scenes. We neither had speaking parts but that didn't matter. The movie is not a real popular movie but who cares, when they were part of it?
Strictly Dullsville.......2006-03-08
Yawn! I love JD films (and not in that annoying, condescending "ironic" way! Screw you Mystery Science Theater!)...Anyway, this is just below average. Everyone is far too polite. There aren't any hot rods or custom cars. The clothes aren't that great. No cool slang. The dancing is dull. It's sorta neat to see John Ashley before he went on to the Beach Party movies, but really this just doesn't have much going for it. If you're looking for some good JD/Rockabilly/Hot Rod 50's films, I'd recommend "Running Wild", "Rock Baby Rock It" or "High School Confidential" for starters. Enjoy!
Whoa, Dad!!!.......2003-12-18
A good JD flick. Rich kid John Ashley is a high school bully with his gang of goons extorting money from local teens for all kinds of things. When he is involved in the death of a fellow student in a car race, things really heat up. Look for Gary Vinson ("Christy" from "McHale's Navy") as one of the teens. Now the BAD NEWS: If you're thinking of buying this Alpha DVD, think again. For a movie made in 1960, this has got to be one of the worst transfers to DVD I have seen. Well, the transfer might be O.K. but the source material leaves much to be desired. I had an old VHS of "High School Caesar" from Rhino Video and it ran rings around this abomination. Scratchy print, soft focus, but worst of all....the audio!! Very woolly and too basey! Sometimes you can't even understand what they are saying. I can live with Alpha's shortcomings in the DVD quality department most of the time, given the age and rarity of some of their titles.... but this is unwatchable!!
Et tu, "High School Caesar".......2000-07-09
If you liked "High School Confidential," if you sat through "Teenage Strangler," if you couldn't get enough of "Girl's Town," daddy-o you'll dig "High School Caesar." In this lawless tale of teenage delinquency, Mat Stephens (John Ashley) leads a ring of beatnik greaser thugs down a dragstrip destined for disaster. Teenage rebellion fostered by the conspicuous absence of parental supervision leads to hijinks on the road, at the malt shop and in the locker room. Stephens, a spoiled rich kid, rigs a high school election and, with his Jerry Lewis-esque sidekick Cricket, holds the hallways hostage. After a tragic drag race, Stephens confronts his true nature in a "far-out" denouement that will leave you reeling with laughter. This movie is above and beyond the typical teenage exploitation because it not only maintains a wonderfully awful B-movie story, but also entertains. Look for Ashley in other great camp fare such as "Beach Party" and "Bikini Beach." A definite must for B-movie, drive-in fans.
