Barney is back with a new generation of kid actors, a music video, and BJ in a tutu. Gone is the old treehouse; Barney and buddies now hang out in a hip refurbished caboose. First up is a lesson about reading in which books inspire the children to act out stories and write their own. In the second story, BJ doesn't want to dance ballet with his sister Baby Bop, until the kids explain that he can put his own spin on it--and take off the tutu. The reinvigorated dinosaur even mildly displays some urban flair when one girl dances to rap. With the incessant adult Barney-bashing of the past, his new owners had the stated purpose of getting parents on their side this time. In that respect, the good news is that both the setting and the child actors seem less artificial, and one of the girls even has a lovely singing voice. (Ages 2 to 5) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Take it or Leave it.......2004-09-14
My 2 to 5 year old group of family and friends who absoutely LOVE "Songs Fron The Park" invariably get bored with this DVD and walk away from it. A few of the songs excite them somewhat but over all this is a take it or leave it video . . . more or less taken because that's whats in the machine. Give them a choice and they choose something else every time.
Wouldn't waste my money if I was you.

Maybe for older children.......2003-08-20
I purchased this DVD for my daughter (20 months). She wouldn't even watch it the first few times I played it. We put it away for a couple months and now she will watch parts of it, but prefers other videos more. I can't comment on the voice issue as I don't watch enough Barney to really pay attention, and since we are recent Barney converts having a new cast doesn't bother me. The song are not very engaging though, there is a lot of talking, and really no songs that my daughter would recognize.
How I rated
*Educational value: the DVD does encourage reading and activity.
Entertaining to children: my daughter doesn't really like this video all that much
Entertaining to adults: I can't stand to sit through it
*cost: on par with most videos
general: nothing else really good to say about this, and in fact took a star away because of the annoying ads in the front. YOu have to fast forward through them and you can't simply skip to the menu. I hate this.
Very disappointed........2003-08-02
I was very disappointed to find that this is a 2003 DVD, not an old one. Why does it have the year as 1992? The new Barney and Baby Bop voices are very annoying. I was looking for a particular video with last year's kids... this is NOT it.. Only Baby Bop is on the cover, so there's no way to know..
My 2 and 3 year old boys did not sit to watch this for more than 2 or 3 minutes, I can't explain why. We did sit down to get relaxed towards the end and discovered that this does not end with Barney's Famous "I love you" song... It ended rather apruptly. This might sound silly - but the kids get to knowing when the video is coming to an end... and bedtime is near... :-)
I am also disappointed in the new Barney videos which run like a VHS tape, you cannot jump to favorite songs, you have to fast forward and rewind. This does not work well at bedtime when we need to get closer to the end... they can see what's being fast forwarded past...not good.
VERY DISAPPOINTED! I want the old Barney and the old kids back!
Baby Bop ROCKS!.......2003-06-14
My daughter has many Barney DVDs and this is her favorite. I decided I had to write a review after reading the only other posted review. Barney's voice is indeed annoying, but the new cast has a lot of talent. All of the dinos dance really well and the children are adorable. This DVD has the current cast members, so if your child likes the show, they are going to love this DVD!
Where is the old Barney??.......2003-06-09
I guess we have been away from the states TOO long. Barney's voice got more annoying then before. I bought this tape for my 15 month old. She really loved the More Barney Songs video. I bought this one to add to her collection, we all sat down to watch it - when Barney started to talk, he sounded like Elmer Fudd!! Anyhow, 5 minutes into the video, my daughter got up and went to her room and played with her toys. Our house will be sticking to the CLASSIC BARNEY tapes when he was lovably annoying, not NAUSEATING annoying....

DON'T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU!.......2005-11-10
This is a great resource that has a slightly cheesy title that might keep some people from purchasing it. It teaches solid fundamentals and communicates them in a way that "clicked" with my 10-year-old son. My son didn't want to watch it at first because of the title and the picture of the "little kid" on the cover. Now he watches it frequently and retains what is taught. Use this video along with Dusty Baker's "You Can Teach Hitting", and you've got all you need to help a youngster learn to hit well.

HIT ME is a miss.......2003-07-23
I love Jim Thompson novels, and I love a good film noir, so I was doubly disappointed when I saw this movie. The direction, while technically proficient, sets the wrong tone, wavering uneasily between brutal violence and goofy antics. The annoying soundtrack was no help, as it seemed at times like it was intended for a light comedy. Elias Koteas' one-note performance portrays his character as if he was totally clueless, making him look as if he had just graduated from the Blue Lagoon School of Acting (Some day I'm going to count how many close-up shots there are of his dumbstruck face. There seemed to be quite a few.). When you find some of the supporting characters are more interesting, you know the movie is in trouble.
Coen-Lite.......2003-07-16
A reasonable attempt at noir, HIT ME -- photographed far too lustrously to be true noir -- packs a few punches after the first twenty minutes (questionable editing) but is hanging off the ropes by the last, dizzying round (even more questionable editing). Like any good fight, the film works best in the middle -- dodging and jabbing and poking with a learned freshness -- and what an exciting tale it weaves.
In the end, HIT ME plays out much like a Coen Brothers production (BLOOD SIMPLE, FARGO, etc.) only heavily watered down.
Elias Koteas plays Sonny, a bellhop at the long-dying Stillwell Hotel. He's too old to start thinking about his future, and he's not quite young enough to remember the lessons of his youth. He lives in the moment, which the director (SECRETARY's Steven Shainberg) displays at great length with Sonny's closeups of rehearsing his room service delivery skills while riding the elevator. Still, one scheming friend and a tryst with a beautiful Canadian hustler later, Sonny finds himself wrapped up in the middle of a heist, stealing money from patrons holed up at the Stillwell for an annual poker game.
Adapted from Jim Thompson's novel, "A Swell Looking Babe," Denis Johnson makes some curious choices with the screenplay that probably wouldn't have found wider success in Hollywood unless he had incorporated a happier ending. That's one of the plagues of Thompson's books: don't expect a rosy ending, and HIT ME follows suit with more than its fair share of twists and turns. After all, the beauty of noir is that nothing -- even the most perfectly hatched sting -- goes off without a hitch. The film manages to keep the viewer guessing -- up to a point -- but the formulaic pacing could've packed a stronger jolt in the climax.
Still, what director Shainberg learned from HIT ME he puts to far greater use in SECRETARY: in that film, the underdog is allowed moments of glory, and characters are allowed to blossom into their own personal level of happiness, albeit slightly perverted. Here, within the oft-traveled hotel corridors and Sonny's filthy living room set of HIT ME, the greatest obstacle the story presents is the duldrums of Sonny's life: come the film's conclusion, he's in a far worse place than when the whole affair began.
Fun film, but a little too long........2003-04-27
I rented this movie cause it it had an interesting story. A bellhop in total mess. Its fun and chilling at times, but this movie is little longer then it should be. Elias Kortas is simply a great actor. He makes this movie. He is such a young Robert Dinero.
This film was done in 1998, but just released on video/DVD cause it was done by the director who did "Secretary." This film I wouldn't put in "Film Noir" class like the back of box says, but I guess in the new genre of sorts: Post-Tarantino.
This movie is perfect for a rental. Instead of picking the usual Hollywood BS, you should give this one a shot. William H. Macy has a very small role so be warned when you see him on the cover.
Disappointing entry in the Film Noir genre.......2003-04-21
"Hit Me" is a 1998 film recently released for the rental market. Director Steven Shainberg's more recent, and much better film, "Secretary," also just appeared as a rental.
"Hit Me" is the story of a none-too-swift loser bellhop, Sonny (Elias Koteas) who works for a hotel that has seen better days. Sonny is responsible for his mentally handicapped brother, larger-than-life Leroy, and the two live in a filthy, messy house. Sonny is trapped in a dead-end job, in a dead-end life, and the only occasional excitement is in the form of harassing phone calls Sonny gets from social workers. It's clear from the beginning that Sonny has a certain amount of suppressed rage, and when an ex-employee re-appears with a scheme to rob an illegal card game about to take place at the hotel, Sonny is easily persuaded to join the gang for his promised 10% ($70,000).
I rented this film for three reasons. 1) It was directed by Shainberg, and I recently watched and enjoyed "Secretary." 2) The film was based on a Jim Thompson novel. 3) The film claimed to be 'film noir.' Now I enjoy film noir when it is done properly--but this film was rather disappointing. Yes, the plot did include a few twists and turns, and there was a tricky female, but the director's style was heavy-handed and intrusive. The elements of comedy fell flat--especially in light of the gruesome scenes towards the end of the film, and the plot was predictable. Elias Koteas delivered a great performance, but even he couldn't salvage this film--displacedhuman

Illogical But You May Not Care.......2007-04-17
HIT ME is one of those films that does not even try to impose any underlying logic to support its paper thin plot and weasly characterizations. I like to play casino blackjack and that was the only reason I rented this indie quickie. Certainly there was no one of repute in the cast. Camden Brady is Alicia Barzun who hires two rookies, one of whom is a math genius, to win millions counting cards in Vegas. She is blond and busty, which is the only reason I gave it more than one star. Dan Herzhod is the math whiz who does not quite grasp the dangers involved in getting involved with such a risky scheme when the schemer brings nothing to the table but brassiness and sleaze. Since I am familiar with most of the rules of casino conduct, I could spot the holes in the plot, not the least of which was Herzhold's betting more than two million dollars on one hand and the casino's accepting the bet. But putting aside such theatrical blunders, I took exception to the movie's given that all one needs to win at card counting is the ability to count and a corresponding ability to hide the fact that one is doing so. Every text that I have ever read on probability suggests that any advantage that is confered by card counting is a minor one that can be felt only over a long run. In this film, that long run was six hours. For those who like me enjoy seeing films about their personal hobbies and do not mind seeing huge holes in logic and veracity, then HIT ME may suffice to kill ninety minutes without too much agida.
Pretty kickin for an Indy film.......2006-08-16
Whenever I put an Indy film in my VHS/DVD/Whatever and press play, I get this sick, anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach. Some of my favorite films are Indies, but I've also seen ten or twenty buttloads worth of crap in my day. I'm happy to announce that this movie falls only slightly south of the first category, not making my "top 10 of all times", but still ranging in the "pretty cool movie, I could watch it again" category.
Definitely recommended. One of those films that makes you want to give more Indies a shot.
