Laid-back yet ever alert, low-key but quick-witted, comedian Henry Cho, in a performance taped in December 2005, looks completely at home in the Tennessee Theatre of his native Knoxville, where his good ol' boy roots and full-blooded Korean ethnicity don't seem the least bit at odds. A hometown audience is happy to see him as he peels off the inevitable gags about Asian stereotypes: "I know some Japanese people," a neighbor tells him. "You should come see them." "I know some fat people," responds Cho. "You should come see them." Cho complains about coming from such a large family with seemingly endless individual lifetimes: "I'm a grown man, and I still haven't sat at the big table. Every year I go up behind my great aunt and go, 'boo!' Doesn't help." Married seven years, Cho describes his small efforts at independence in a middle-class context: "I use the gravy boat to eat Cheerios, put water on the special soap, and go into the guest room." Cho has a few observations, too, about Southern manners: "You can say anything about anybody as long as you add, 'bless his heart.' Such as, 'That baby's so ugly... Bless his heart." --Tom Keogh

Description

"I'm an Asian with a Southern accent," remarks Cho. "To a lot of people, that right there is funny." Always making the most of who he is, Cho recently inked a deal to co-create and star in his own sitcom based on his life as a Korean-American born and raised in Tennessee. You will be able to see him in his own one-hour comedy special What's That Clickin' Noise?

3 out of 5 stars Henry, WHAT HAPPENED!?.......2007-06-18

I have enjoyed Henry Cho at his best, I mean real "funny". This dvd "What's That Clickin' Noise" is not that good. He often tells the audience that something is funny, no hearty laughs with this one. Sort of left us "ho hum".

5 out of 5 stars Some more great Southern humor!.......2007-03-08

Henry Cho is as good as the "Blue Collar Comedy" guys. You would never believe he is Korean if you didn't see him. He is also clean, no vulgarity at all. Children can listen to this performance.

4 out of 5 stars Henry Cho.......2007-02-06

We thought this comic was so funny we bought four more for our children. His humor is clean and we thought the jokes about Arab, Alabama were hilarious. We have visited Arab since our son lives there and what Henry Cho says about it is true.

5 out of 5 stars Only wish it was much longer!.......2007-01-26

Henry Cho was someone I caught on the Comedy channel.. saw the last part of his routine and was laughing my head off. I looked and looked to see when he was going to be on the Channel again and could find him... So I had to get his DVD. It is hysterical!! The whole family can enjoy his humor. His unique view of the world... the Southern world from a Korean man's perspective is refreshing. But, mostly, you can relate to his outlook on life or at least find it very funny. I only wish it would have gone on for hours...and hours.

4 out of 5 stars Great family-friendly humor.......2007-01-12

Henry Cho is a very funny storyteller and frequently remarks that he gets much of his material simply by relating his experiences with family and friends. Raised in the only Asian family in a southern town, Henry's stories show the funny side of our cultural differences and our similarities. His show is family friendly: there is no profanity, not even any risque stories. The entire family can sit and enjoy this together.

Equal parts punk and psychedelia, the Flaming Lips emerged from Oklahoma City as one of the most bracing bands of the late 1980's. The Fearless Freaks documents their rise from Butthole Surfers-imitating noisemakers to grand poobahs of orchestral pop masterpieces. Filmmaker Bradley Beesely had the good fortune of living in the same neighborhood as lead Lip Wayne Coyne, who quickly enlisted his buddy to document his band's many concerts and assorted exploits. The early footage is a riot, with tragic hair styles on proud display as the boys attempt to cover up their lack of natural talent with sheer volume. During one show, they even have a friend bring a motorcycle on stage, which is then miked for sound and revved throughout the performance, clearing the club with toxic levels of carbon monoxide. Great punk rock stuff. Interspersed among the live bits are interviews with the band's family and friends, revealing the often tragic circumstances of their childhoods and early career.

By the time the film reaches the late '90s, Coyne's band has witnessed a number of personnel changes, most notably the introduction of drummer and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd. It's here that the Flaming Lips begin their ascent into greatness. Fueled by the alt-pop hit "She Don't Use Jelly," the band enters an era of intense experimentation, conducting a symphony for car stereos in a parking garage, releasing a 4-disc album meant to be played simultaneously, and embarking on the creation of their first masterpiece, The Soft Bulletin. Sadly, Steven Drozd's demons keep pace with the band's success. In an incredibly heartbreaking scene, Drozd talks frankly about his addiction while preparing to shoot heroin. Fortunately, Drozd kicks his habit as the Lips enter the studio for their follow-up, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and the film ends with the band enjoying widespread acclaim as they deliver one extravagant show after another. There are some conspicuous absences in this tale, notably their weird and lucky break appearing on '80s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 and their tour as openers and backing band for Beck. The bonus disc includes some cool outtakes and performances, but unfortunately none of the band's vibrant music videos. -- Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Documentary About An Innovative Band and Life..........2007-01-10

What can I say? The Flaming Lips are one of the greatest bands ever and most innovative and unique bands to ever walk the planet. This film shows all the struggles and brilliance of all the members and how they came about to become The Flaming Lips. All are so greatly talented in their own ways. But all so humble, friendly, and lovers of life. I have to give it up to Wayne, what a great overall guy.

I love the acoustic performance of "Psychiatric Explorations Of The Fetus With Needles". Yeah, strange title...but listen to that song and just the mood and energy of it will make life seem happy no matter what.

This one is a classic, go out and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Intimate Portrayal (with plenty of bunny rabbits!).......2006-10-24

This is a wonderful film, and one can tell that it's definitely a labor of love.

I must say that I was disturbed by the drug use scene with Stephen. However, this is because I am a former addict. But I still think it was unnecessary to be so graphic; but he truly shared the perils of heroin addiction in the most real way.

I do wonder how the movie will turn out. I can't believe the amount of energy Wayne possesses toward his projects. I found him to be a great role model (I am an artist myself, and quite lazy by comparison).

Only one more complaint. Like in many documentaries, they will tease you with the beginning of a wonderful song, then speak over it, or cut away. I could have used less talk and more music, since this is what the documentary is ultimately about; well beside their lives and the creative process.

I highly recommend this film. Oh, and yes, it is a bit too long; but it only proves how engaged the filmmaker is in the project.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the roots of the Lips philosophy.......2006-09-26

Home videos from the 70's and candid interviews give a great incite of how the Flaming Lips philosophy came about. It is difficult to watch this DVD without wanting to jump up, go out and change the world.

5 out of 5 stars A wild ride you never knew existed.......2006-04-22

I had no idea that the history of the Flaming Lips could be so cool, touching, and odd. It's a great viewing, for huge fans or people new to the group.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rockumentry's I've seen .......2006-04-02

Along with Belle & Sebastian's "Fans Only" DVD, this is best rockumentry I've seen. Very rarley does one of these thigs leave you with a complete feeling at the ending, like you got your money's worth. That has to do with the cooperation the band had in making this DVD.

Though Laurel and Hardy fans will attest to the relative weakness of the three films included in this Gift set, Great Guns, Jitterbugs, and The Big Noise, the films still brim with classic Stan and Ollie antics, and more intriguingly, serve as historical markers of American Wartime Cinema. These post-Hal Roach, Twentieth Century Fox releases offer, even in the liner notes, information about how the film industry was influenced by World War II. Great Guns' plot most directly refers to the war, showing what happens when the Army recruits two clowns. Gunpowder gags, planes dropping flour bombs, and physical comedy inside the barracks, involving cots, dangling light bulbs, and mess kits abound in this film that hopefully entertained soldiers. Jitterbugs, the funniest film in the set, provides comedic escape from hardship by constructing a plot based on a dislike for gas rationing. In Jitterbugs, Stan and Ollie, stars of the Zoot Suit Band, encounter a scam artist who allegedly can turn water into gasoline with an invented pill. Together, the three men swindle their ways into absurd situations, culminating in hilarious scenes of Stan disguised as a wealthy elderly lady who at one point declares, to a bunch of gangsters, that she's feeling "quite gay." Clever double-entendres, subtle wordplay, and co-star Vivian Blaine make this film wonderful. A documentary entitled "Revenge of the Sons of the Desert," about Laurel and Hardy fan clubs and conventions, shows how the wacky spirits of Stan and Ollie live on into the present day. True, these three films may not be their strongest, but they defined comedy during some of America's grimmest times. --Trinie Dalton

5 out of 5 stars Fives stars for entire disk content!.......2007-05-25

These are not the very best Laurel and Hardy movies but they are not really bad either. They are different. If they had started as a team making these movies we would never have known about all their best work and we'd be satisfied with these films as they are.

Each of these three movies I enjoyed watching. The picture and sound quality are superior to many of the other Laurel and Hardy videos available.

The extra features are a bonus too. I especially liked the audio commentaries by expert film historians.

I highly recommend this collection to ture Laurel and Hardy fans!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE FOR LAUREL & HARDY FANS.......2007-03-16

Many of these post Hal Roach films I'd never seen before. That's why I just had to get this DVD set.I'm always fascinated to see anything from Stan and Ollie that I've never seen before.
Great Guns and Jitterbugs are the only two I haven't seen before in this set.I especially like Jitterbugs.Definetly one of their better 40s films.Vivia Blane is a beautiful singer.Plus Stan and Ollie themselves are seen a lot more in this film than in most of their much later features.

1 out of 5 stars The Legends of Comedy are Back with New Material!.......2006-11-09

I'm a very enthusiastic fun of the great comedy team Laurel&Hardy. I search any release that come out of the legendary team of the silver screen. When I purchased the 21 dvd box set "Laurel&Hardy Collection" two years ago, I thought that almost all of the movies were included in this collection. Eventually, I realized that most of the movies from 1940s and some of the 1930s movies were not considered in this collection. Fortunately, I came across this new collection of their films which were missing in the 21 dvd collection. The three movies in "Laurel&Hardy Giftset Volume 1" are the movies made in 1940s. Though they seem a bit aged(Laurel) in some particular scenes, they still do a fantastic job. I think every Laurel&Hardy fun or simply the fun of classical comedies should get this "Laurel&Hardy giftset". "Laurel&Hardy Giftset Volume 2" has already come out and I also recommend you to get that one too. Great! I've collected almost every film of the great comedy team by purchasing these two new giftset releases.

1 out of 5 stars crumbs from the laurel and hardy table.......2006-11-04

As a life-long fan of Stan and Ollie, I continue to be depressed at the relative absence of the availability of their classic works on DVD. Except for the thrown-together Hallmark volumes which , for the most part, use poor dupes of 35mm material and for Turner's L&H "collection" with FRA DIAVOLO and BONNIE SCOTLAND, two of their weakest Roach films, their is nothing readily available to show the genius of these two timeless performers. The continued release of the weak - and frequently execrable - films for Fox and MGM in the 40s will only cause the unititiated to think L&H are nothing beyond two aging, unfunny knockabouts.
Although the Fox/MGM films might have a place on the shelf of a completist, they are really just depressing. Why does not UNIVERSAL, who releases the ENTIRE body of their Roach work from 1927 -1940 release this massive and impressive set state-side?

4 out of 5 stars These films are not that bad!.......2006-10-13

It seems like so many people have said that L&H's post-1940 films are awful for so long that even people who don't have any familiarity with them believe it, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Sure they'll never compare to their earlier glories like 'Pack Up Your Troubles' or 'Way Out West,' nor to any of their short subjects, but they really shouldn't be compared because they're in two very different categories. People should see them as what they are, not what they're not. And wouldn't one rather see L&H in a less brilliant vehicle than see the kind of stuff that passes for comedy today?

'Great Guns' (1941) can feel like a big let-down, since this was their first Fox film after so many wonderful years at Hal Roach, and the drop-off in quality is stunning. However, it does manage to deliver enough funny lines and gags to make this picture worthwhile. It may not be as funny or as classic as their earlier glories, but it's still entertaining regardless. Great scenes include Stan and Ollie's attempts to serve themselves lunch at the dining hall, Stan stuffing their pet crow down the back of Ollie's pants when they're in formation, and the neverending plank of wood Stan carries during one of their military exercises. Though this film was made somewhat prior to the U.S. entering WWII, it does seem to be anticipating that possibility, what with the "Isn't the Army great and fun?" theme, kind of making it into a subtle propaganda picture in case the U.S. really did join the war. And it's painful to see how Fox just didn't understand Stan and Ollie's characters, making them aware of their dumbness, servile, not wanting to better themselves and rise above being servants, people who know their place and don't mind it. Stan's stupidity and Ollie's weight are made into cruel needless joke after cruel needless joke as well. Before, part of the joke was that Ollie was quite a big boy, but that he was so graceful in spite of it, and that Stan was in a special childlike world of his own, which Ollie often brought him out of with a choice word or look. They're also kind of pushed into the background in favor of the boring would-be couple, more like supporting characters. There's also a badly dated scene where Sgt. Hippo (whom I thought looked like Bob Hope) has his face blackened by exploding tobacco, and Stan and Ollie pretend to not recognise him, with lines like "Look, they've assigned us a porter." Then their commanding officer comes in and yells at Hippo, asking him, "What are you trying to do, put on a minstrel show?" They never would have used this kind of cheap racial humor at Hal Roach!

'Jitterbugs' (1943) also has secondary characters assuming more importance in the plotline, though Stan and Ollie seem more their old selves in this picture, getting to have more of the main action instead of being pushed to the sideline in favor of some boring young couple and the villains, coupled with superfluous musical numbers (rather like what happened to the Marx Brothers in their MGM films). It's also a lot funnier than 'Great Guns.' Added bonuses are the scene where Ollie has to pretend to be a Southern colonel (he does it so well and convincingly, doubtlessly because he was a Southerner himself) and the scenes where Stan pretends to be Emily Cartwright. It's always a riot to see Stan in drag, and he also gets to use his real British accent, which is an added bonus. Probably one of their best Fox films, even though it might not be quite up to their old snuff.

'The Big Noise' (1944) suffers from being uneven. A lot of the best scenes and gags are remakes of things from earlier shorts and features (such as 'Oliver the Eighth,' 'Berth Marks,' 'Habeas Corpus,' and 'Wrong Again!'), but they never really go anywhere. The plot had a lot of potential, but just wasn't executed very well. It also suffers from, once again, secondary characters assuming too much importance. And the ending just occurs out of nowhere and leaves more questions than answers; additionally, Stan and Ollie would have never dropped a bomb on anyone on purpose, even in wartime, back at Hal Roach. They just weren't that type of people. Of their WWII-themed films, I actually much prefer the also-reviled 'Air Raid Wardens.' However, I don't think this film is as awful as its reputation; it's certainly not what I'd consider their worst feature.

Extras include trailers, audio commentaries, photo galleries and press materials, newsreels about Fox Movietone News, and a short documentary on the Sons of the Desert, the worldwide L&H fan society. Overall, this isn't something I'd recommend to a new or casual fan, but it's a must-have for more seasoned fans. These films are better than their reputation (one should form one's own opinion about them instead of just parroting the popular wisdom; that's like letting other people do your thinking for you), and it's great to see that they've been given the deluxe treatment, restored, and released on DVD. Hopefully people with open minds will be able to make up their own minds about their merit and worth, even to consider a critical re-evaluation of them.

Despite an abundance of gaping plot holes, White Noise serves up enough spooky atmosphere to make it worth a look-see for fans of supernatural thrillers. Even when hampered with a shoddy, clumsily written screenplay, Michael Keaton brings professional conviction to his role as a grieving widower who is introduced to the mysterious (and according to paranormal researchers, highly documented) existence of EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, which allows the dead to communicate (one-way only, it seems) from the great beyond, through images and voices recordable on a variety of electronic media such as VCRs, computers, etc. Seeking contact with his recently deceased wife, Keaton finds dire warnings of evil in the afterlife, with connections (all too convenient) to killings and disappearances in his Vancouver, British Columbia vicinity. British TV director Geoffrey Sax brings slick style to this hokum, and a few moments of genuine eeriness, but you may find yourself giggling too much to appreciate the highlights. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars DISTURBING.......2007-06-26

I purchased this dvd without knowing what it was about. After viewing it, I thought it was more disturbing than scarey. But disturbing is thought provoking and, therefore, a good thing. It is a ghost story involving EVP and dark spirits.

The only thing I really did not like about White Noise was the ending. I hate it when dark spirits win.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst films ever created.......2007-05-03

Another 'no' star!!!

I'ts amazing to see how many shallow and uncreative people there are that watch these types of movies, and actually think they are, err, good?

Take a theory like EVP's, an awesome stack of countless, supposed EVP tangible evidence, and finally bring it to someone in Hollywood, and well, what do you expect Universal to do with it? I mean Michael Keaton, are you kidding me? It is time for him to hang it up. Another The Ring, Scream, Dimension Type film disaster....the only thing not worse than the price tag of $18.00 when I first bought it, was the extras (ie. leading authorities on EVP'sand the EVP sessions that were live) That, without question, was the only thing worth wasting your time on.

Geoffrey Sax go teach at film school.

3 out of 5 stars Not thrilled.......2007-03-30

Great effects but White noise was a disappointment because they are not discribing what white noise REALLY is. They really pushed the envelope on this. Suspension of disbelief takes a back seat when true fact is distorted. though Michael Keaton as usual..is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Mystery and Chills Convincingly Done.......2007-02-28

I expected to not like this film when it first came out. I don't know if other reviewers jaded me or whether I thought this might be a cheap horror flick or maybe both, but I didn't think this film would be very good, so I waited for it to come out on video and rented it. At a mild PG-13 rating my whole family could watch this little chiller that was creatively directed, convincingly acted by Keaton, who was long overdue for some serious recognition as a dramatic actor (check him out in the outstanding Clean and Sober), and the script, while faulty at times, goes down rather easily. There are some genuinely scary moments in "White Noise", but much focus is on the eerie atmoshere and unfolding mystery of the story. I liked this film very much for the same reasons why I liked The Ring (Widescreen Edition) and The Grudge.

I have always enjoyed horror flicks that rely more on atmosphere, story, and acting, than actual on screen violence and gore even though I have gotten a kick out of a few of those (Night of the Living Dead, Suspiria). This is a superior little thriller that I'm glad I was initially wrong about in my first judgment of it. This is a chilling movie that has repeat value.

3 out of 5 stars [insert static].......2007-02-20

This flick is 1 hour and 38 minutes long. When it gets to 1:28, just turn it off. The premise is great, the setup is strong, and then it falls completely apart in the last 10 min. It's a really big let down, and total lack of thread to tie events together. I'm fine with mystery and loose ends, but the plot resolution attempts to indicate an association without telling you why you should care. Not an intuitive leap at all.

Makes me sad cos it really was going along so well.

Corporate Ghost finds Sonic Youth embracing the music-video format in a big and exciting way with the 1990 release of their hit album, Goo. The band produced a video for each of Goo's 11 tracks, and that collection forms the first half of this stylistically eclectic anthology. Sonic Youth's enthusiasm also drew significant filmmaking talent: Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke) directs the witty, histrionic "Mildred Pierce," which looks like a 1940s experimental biography of Joan Crawford. Far from Heaven's Todd Haynes makes a fascinating fever dream of "Disappearer," telegraphing angst about the difference between public and private identity. Tamra Davis (Guncrazy) delivers both the MTV-accessible "Dirty Boots" as well as the deliriously sexy "Kool Thing." Later videos include the fashion show trappings of "Sugar Kane," the mesmerizing duet between bassist-singer Kim Gordon and guest Kim Deal on "Little Trouble Girl," and a grabby, time-manipulated video for "Sunday" by Harmony Korine (Gummo). --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Not what you might be expecting.......2006-02-15

I consider myself to be a pretty huge Sonic Youth fan. I've followed the band's work for years and seen them live a number of times. This collection of videos is pretty underwhelming considering the genius and importance of the band's music. The biggest problem is that these videos come from Sonic Youth's early 90's commercial period, which wasn't something I figured out until I had the DVD home. There are no videos from Daydream Nation or any of preceding albums, which includes most of Sonic Youth's best work.

Aside from the music not really being SY's best, some of the videos are downright embarassing, especially the hits from Goo and Dirty. They usually revolve around skateboard punks and stereotypical alternative kids from the early 90's, so they're dated as hell and a bit difficult to watch. I was especially disappointed with the videos from Murray Street, which was an exceptional album. The video for "The Empty Page" is just a collage of tour footage thrown together with footage of Moore lip synching in front of the mirror. "Disconnection Notice" is even worse, featuring teenaged kids arguing about something in a car. Couldn't they have found some better actors? It's worse than watching Degrassi.

If youre a big fan of mid-90's SY, this collection is probably for you. If you're a fan of their early material, you might want to save your money for the upcoming independent videography that's advertised on the back of this DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Corporate Ghost Disappoints.......2005-12-31

Sonic Youth has never been a visually oriented group, and this collection of videos is a testament to that fact. As songwriters and musical artists, their craft is daring, original, and groundbreaking. It's a shame that the video images are not on par with the music.

Beginning with the entirety of the album Goo and carrying through Murray Street, the videos are mostly comprised of teenagers making out, skateboarding punks, and bandmembers lipsynching their way through the material. It is decidedly middle of the road typical MTV material. The single most disturbing video is Sunday, which features gratuitous close ups of Macaulay Culkin(!) making out with a girl in slow motion. Surely a frightening image to anyone whose name isn't Michael Jackson.

Had this dvd come from a lesser band I wouldn't have been so disappointed, but with Sonic Youth I expect at least originality, if not always greatness. As the title suggests, this product is a collection of corporate marketing, with little room left for artistry.

1 out of 5 stars sonic youth makes my sense of integrity hurt.......2005-11-16

sonic youth.........where to start...how about nowhere..that seems fitting...i just wrote a huge blog after watching 1991:the year punk broke for the first time in years, and i really dont feel like repeating.

so basically, anybody thats gonna buy this thing is gonna be a s.y. fan anyway so whatever i say won't matter, but.....

sonic youth , and thurston moore in general, suck. a lot. i've never seen someone try so hard to use as many "big" words in a sentance so hard in my life. and the band as a whole seems to follow just about every underground indie trend that comes along ( if you happen to disagree, *please* go listen to your grunge obsessed copy of dirty, look at the flannel covered back sleeve, and feel that butch vig post-nevermind production)

sonic is the biggest example of "hey, i'm cool, right???" i've ever seen..if you're gonna get all nostalgic about the late eighties/early nineties, go listen to dinosaur jr. it'll make you feel good

5 out of 5 stars A great music video DVD from a great band........2005-02-08

I very much love the music of Sonic Youth so I decided to go ahead and buy this video collection. Although I had no idea what to expect, I must say that I am very happy with what I got. Audio and video quality is as good as you can expect, especially since the videos come from such a wide rage of mediums ranging from low budget video to high quality film. Special features are great also, especially the videos directed by the fans and "My Sonic Room" where a fan paints the cover of the album Goo on her wall.
1. Dirty Boots- The band plays a concert while fans mingle with each other.
2. Tunic (Song For Karen)-Has a public access production value feel to it and it reminds me of David Lynch's Eraserhead. Includes hidden images of Karen Carpenter.
3. Mary-Christ-Mostly close ups of the band mixed with live footage, looks like it was shot with night vision cameras.
4. Kool Thing- Has Singer Kim Gordon holding a black cat while the band plays in a tin foil decorated room.
5. Mote- A mix of the band playing, footage of the film Koyaanisqatsi, and graphic dismemberment footage.
6. My Friend Goo- My least favorite on the disk, a homemade video with singer Kim Gordon in a pink cat suit singing along with a record.
7. Disappearer- The band goes on a strange road trip.
8. Mildred Pierce- Has the band in various locations around Hollywood and Sofia Coppola, director of Lost in Translation, plays Joan Crawford.
9. Cinderella's Big Score- an video about Kim Gordon's relationship to her brother is my interpretation.
10. Scooter And Jinx- Two female strippers star in this video, one poses naked while the other takes pictures.
11. Titanium Expose- Like a non linear short film, memorable for seeing singers Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore making out with each other.
12. 100%- The band plays a house party while footage of skateboarders is cut in.
13. Sugar Kane- Like a grunge fashion show video.
14. Youth Against Fascism- Just a collage of the band playing, motorcyclists, and other stuff.
15. Bull In The Heather- Features Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill acting obnoxious.
16. Superstar- a loving tribute to Karen Carpenter, the band is dressed up quite formally on a glitzy stage.
17. Little Trouble Girl- a slick looking video with a sci-fi edge, Kim Deal from the Pixies and the Breeders appears also.
18. The Diamond Sea- Footage from the band on the road.
19. Sunday- Stars Macaulay Culkin and some ballerinas.
20. Hoarfrost- Mostly footage of someone driving around at wintertime.
21. Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)- Has a bunch of people hanging out while Kim Gordon is singing on a laptop computer.
22. The Empty Page- More footage from the band touring.
23. Disconnection Notice- A short film featuring four young adults arguing with each other in a car.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any Sonic Youth fan........2004-10-29

There are two ways to look at this video collection. If you're a sonic youth fan and if you're not.

number 1 is not a sonic youth fan
number 2 is a sonic youth fan

1. The videos are often low budget and show it. The footage is raw and intimate. This is not the kind of stuff you see on MTV- no fancy high budget videos whose production costs could feed 500 musicians for their intire lifetime.

2. Let's face it. Sonic Youth is one of the best and most influential bands of the last 20 years. They still tour and rock better than ever. This DVD is a reflection of the band and everything that makes them great. The videos on this DVD, while not essential to every single living breathing human, make a wonderful collection that lets the viewer to become truly more intimate with the band. If you have even a passing interest in anything relating to "alternative music" or "indie-rock" this is a DVD you should alteast go watch at one of your (much cooler) friend's houses. If you are a Sonic Youth fan this is a total no brainer, it's essential, buy it now.

This dvd is great for new or old fans and also not 1 song is bad, plus the videos are so worth the money. 19 of them you can't beat that. Buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Dissipointing.......2006-04-20

Considering how innovative and moving the Lips cds and Live shows are to the senses, you would figure this would be the same deal for thier videos. Not so, in fact thier videos pale in comparrison to many other bands in the 90's who were not putting out nearly as good music as the Lips. You wont find blood, balloons, crowd surfing in a bubble, or anything psychedelic here for that matter. This videos are suprising pedestrian, like the weak videos for "Fight Test", "Yoshimi", "Mr. Ambulence Driver", ect. I do love the videos for "Christmas at the Zoo" and "Bad Days", which are charming in thier alternative 90's cheapness.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compliment to The Fearless Freaks!.......2006-02-24

I wrote a review a good time back of The Fearless Freaks to prematurely. I tried to go back and rewrite it, but Amazon only allows on review per item. Anyway, I give The Fearless Freaks 5 Stars after watching it a half dozen times. It slowly grew on me with each viewing.

Void compliments The Fearless Freaks and is outstanding on it's own merits. I had never seen any music videos by these guys. Note: I'm fairly new to the Lips. This video collection hits on my favorite albums: Transmissions, Clouds, Bulletin, Yoshimi. With the video ending with the UK version of "Do you realize", I just about squirted a few. It's like when one of your favorite movies ends with a killer song that just hits you in the gut! I love that song anyway! Thanks You Guys!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT! I disagree with Robert M. Flynn.......2006-02-19

I loved this DVD. I was a little worried when I first saw it, because I love the Flaming Lips, and the worst feeling in the world is finally seeing a band that you love and seeing their videos and being let down. The Flaming Lips did not let me down at all, in fact, their videos are exactly what I had expected. They are great visual partners to the wonderful songs.

I recommend this to any real fan of the Flaming Lips, because the videos are perfect representations of the music. If you like the Flaming Lips, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

This DVD thoroughly explores the worldwide phenomenon that is the Black Eyed Peas. When discussing the characterization of the group, status quo is a term that will more than likely NOT come up during the conversation. As a matter of fact, judging from their distinctive sound and style, one would probably be safe to assume that outside the box is the only place they feel comfortable. The Black Eyed Peas have been able to successfully dodge Hip Hops many pigeon-holes and firmly establish themselves inside a personalized niche amongst the materialism and violence that often saturates rap music.

1 out of 5 stars Total Rip-Off.......2006-12-02

Be VERY aware -
This DVD is a one-hour documentary that contains absolutely no singing - no songs - and no performances by the Black Eyed Peas (BEPs).
It simply discusses where the various members grew up, different musical influences they were exposed to, and a bit of history of Hip-Hop music prior to the BEPs making it big. During the narration a number of still shots of the band members are shown on the screen, but that's about it.
Once again - NO SONGS - NO MUSIC - NO PERFORMANCES by the BEPs - a huge waste of $$ in my mind.

5 out of 5 stars From the Golden Age, To the Age of Steel..........2005-01-25

What a total treat. The first time I became aware of Laibach was nearly twenty years ago when I first saw the video for Opus Dei [Life is Life] on MTV's long dead and--probably in these days of Butts'n'Bling--little lamented 120 Minutes. I thought it was the most visually arresting thing I had ever seen, with its sweeping, majestic Slovene-scapes and the then-young Laibach looking ever-so-serious. Nowadays I look at it and try to imagine the budget. The band clearly already owned lederhosen and suspenders, so some firewood, a couple tents, and a few bottles of cheap Yugoslav beer to drink around the fire after looking all stern and serious all day. Oh yeah, and a few hundred feet of film. $500.00, tops. Same for Sympathy for the Devil. Both, incidentally, could have been produced by the Ministry of Tourism, so elegantly and eloquently do they present Laibach's beloved Slovenia. Anyone dumb enough to still think Laibach are some sort of fascists should watch those two, plus the campy, ridiculous Geburt Einer Nation, which looks like Leni Riefenstahl by way of Monty Python--check out the facial expressions on the sole blonde member if you have any doubts this is all an elaborate joke.

Across the Universe is utterly gorgeous--I had no idea there even was a video for it, and it's a longtime favorite. Note that before the end of the video when Milan says "Om," the only shot of a band member in the whole video is a shot of the skinny dark-haired guy's enormous adam's apple. Love baby Laibach!

Wirtschaft ist Tod has a silly, inexplicable feeling that goes quite well with the utterly inscrutible album it came from--think Flash Gordon meets Star Trek, Spaceballs, Triumph of the Will, and Modern Times. Or perhaps don't, if you value your sanity.

From here it gets a bit iffy. Having a budget does not seem to much agree with Laibach's post-Dadaist artistic aesthetic. The videos from the NATO era (except for War) are just lame. Yeah, great--flying NSK passports: that really captures the loopy Wagnerian/Andrew Lloyd Weber-esque/Giorgio Moroderian feel of the song. But soon enough it's all over and it's obvious the budgets have been slashed back to the point where they have to be creative again. God is God is back to locations in Slovenia albeit with color-correction that makes the Alps look like Hell, Alle Gegen Alle is live, Tanz Mit Laibach remixes old videos and showcases Milan's unsuspected resemblance to Viggo Mortensen. And Das Spiel ist Aus is live with shots of the band in a mall with military uniforms and a shopping cart upsetting passersby.

The documentary is fantastic, particularly if, like me, you have not seen "A Film From Slovenia" or "Predictions of Fire" and don't really know that much about them beyond their albums and a few cryptic, absurd interviews. Not so fabulous is the "director's commentary track" from Milan that accompanies what basically amounts to a video version of the album WAT. I don't think Laibach is well-served by having their lead singer earnestly explaining what the songs mean in terms that at time seem almost apologetic--rendering their music (seemingly) explicable takes away some of its power. Or maybe it's just the most direct method of disinforming us they've ever attempted.

Either way, this will both entertain and provoke thought, which plants it squarely in the Laibach tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting and Powerful DVD! Masterful release!.......2004-11-25

Laibach is one of the underrated pioneers of intense Euro-Goth-Art Industrial mayhem, and this DVD video collection is a perfect testament to their longevity and breadth of output and creativity over the many years thus far. Laibach's 'staying power' is evident up to this day, being they have been together now for more than 20 years, and still going strong. In fact, they are currently touring the U.S. as I type this. One of the crowning points of this DVD video collection, and a superb 'extra', is the inclusion of a fairly lengthy documentary on Laibach's history and NSK politico-art movement. It is riveting, and full of facts on the band's history thus far. All in all, this is a HIGHLY recommended retrospective collection of key Laibach video art pieces, and a MUST for your collection, whether you like this genre or not. This IS powerful stuff! Combining art, music, and politics is NOT for the faint at heart, but Laibach pulls it off and then some!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful retrospective.......2004-11-24

As with all things, Rammstein's recent video collection is flashier than Laibach's, but flash isn't everything. Laibach has an impressive body of work on display here, especially when you consider the years in question. The majority of their videos are from the 1980's, when American video directors were in love with smoke machines and random shots of horses on cobble stone streets. Laibach's vision is clear thoughout all their videos to an extent I don't believe any other band has ever attempted. Even the sugary Enya-tinged video for "Across the Universe" contains elements of their "over identification" concept and the final shot is all the more powerful for it. I do not like all of their videos (the computer generated "In the Army Now" is a low point), but the common thread running through them is amazing. Nearly 25 years and they are still revealing facets of their complex ideology. The most recent videos are a real treat, as no American station (to my knowledge) has shown them. Rounding out the DVD is a truly excellent documentary called WAT EPK. It is an excellent introduction to the Laibach/NSK art movement and highlights some of their pivotal moments. This is the band afterall that helped bring down the Slovenian Communist party.
The release of the Laibach documentary "A Film from Slovenia" on DVD will be welcome, but there are rarer --and more important-- video recordings that still need to be released. WAT EPK gives us our first brief glimpse of Laibach with a Slovenian orchestra playing for important dignitaries, and the controversy that ensued. Mute has hinted that this concert, and the super-rare Laibach documentary "Predictions of Fire" will make it on to DVD soon as well.
I highly recommend this DVD, and urge you to look for more Laibach releases in the coming year.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong Verve!.......2007-01-10

I haven't even listen to this. I wanted the Verve from England. And I got some group I never hear of shipped from Brazil. I really feel cheated out of my money.

3 out of 5 stars Early videos are hideous but the later ones make up ..........2005-08-01

ok so im a verve addict. i can listen to slide away for like 3 hours on repeat no problem, so when i saw this weird ass video for slide away that starts off cool and ends up bezerk, it wasn't hard to figure out why the verve never caight on until their thrid and final album urban hymns. a good band still needs great videos, or at least decent ones for people to want to pay attention. the verve obviously had the tunes from the minute they were formed, they're all classic, but the early videos are totally weird, but not in an interesting cool way, like in a "we're an indie band that ran out of money and ideas" way. and like i said im a huge verve fan, but most of these videos are lunacy. the video for history is like a mini compilation of all those horrible early videos rolled into one. the true value on this album comes from the urban hymns videos, which are remarkable. bittersweet symphony is such a life affirming video where richard ashcroft takes a stroll down a busy street while feeling a bit down. and the way the band joins him at the end to symbolize he isnt the only one who feels this way was so touching. the videos for lucky man and sonnet are gorgeous as well. by the way, if you google the verve and go to their official website, you can see all these videos, well not the early ones from storm in heaven, but trust me thats to your favour there. i would suggest this for anyone who really likes the verve and wants to see this as a refernce point of how they were.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Music, Great Videos!.......2005-02-12

Except for the truly terrible video for "History", this is a great collection of videos, showing why The Verve are contenders for Best Band of the 1990's. They not only had a terrific sound, they had *The Look*. U2 and Oasis just pale next to these guys in both departments. "History" aside, the best videos are from the albums, "A Northern Soul" and "Urban Hymns". They are so good, they make up for the somewhat lesser real early videos. A MUST for fans of The Verve!!

4 out of 5 stars If you area real fan, it's worth it........2005-01-20

A nice keepsake if you are a diehard fan like myself. But... I distinctly remember a different video for "Slide Away" as it was the first time I ever saw or heard of this band. (waaaaay back in 93' on 120 minutes. Does anyone else remember this? Anyway, the video looked alot like the cover of "A storm in heaven" not the borderline campy video on this. But don't other more recent videos make up for that, along with including the rarity "All in the mind." Dang... I wish they were still together and making great music.

2 out of 5 stars great music - terrible videos.......2004-12-26

As a long time fan of The Verve, I was excited the see the release of this DVD, and it immediately went on my Christmas list. Now that I have it, I am very disappointed. Never having seen videos for many of the early Verve singles, I had high hopes, but many of these videos should never have seen the light of day. Cheap effects, and home movie quality are par for the course on much of the this DVD.
One particularly jarring example was the video for "Slide Away" from A Storm in Heaven, one of my favorites. Like seeing a terrible movie version of your favorite book, I now fear that I may forever have terrible grainy images of the band frolicking with. . .I'll spare you.
Later videos are of better quality technically, but it would seem that it was really not until Urban Hymns that the visuals could hold their own with the music. Too bad.
A MUCH better bet is the the Verve 96-98 video. As far as I know, only available on VHS. Live concert footage, fantastic videography, a few videos that also appear here, plus the backstage/tourbus stuff. The Verve 96-98 is on a level with Radiohead's "Making Friends is Easy" movie. This recent release is much too much rubbish. COME ON GUYS! COME ON! COME ON!
