Customer Reviews:
Basic familiarization.......2007-01-11
As a general rule I believe there is usually "something" that can be taken from most books and videos on this subject. It may only be a better demonstration or a twist on an old technique. This video is a VERY BASIC "introduction" to the concepts of survival. The video does not really teach anything new or useful such as making a fire with bow and drill. Instead, it shows several different types of fire starters (metal match, regular matches, lighter, gel fire starter, etc) and contrasts their size and ease of use. The production quality of the video is very good. I found this video most useful to spark an intrest in survival in my 8 year old son and uninterested wife.
I would recommend this video to cub scouts and possibly junior scouts as an introduction. I think anyone that is already familiar with outdoors and survival would NOT find this video useful.
Very informative and beautifully photographed DVD.......2005-08-19
"Prepared to Survive" is a great introduction to surviving in the wild for the uninitiated and/or an informative refresher for those who may be out of practice with fundamental survival skills.
The "Basic Concepts" portion of the 1st DVD is a bit long winded and uninteresting at times, hence my 4 star rating, but is packed with lots of useful and important knowledge. The "In-Depth Topics" portion of the 1st DVD and the supplemental material on the 2nd DVD provide the audience with a comprehensive understanding of the methods and practical demonstration of the tools necessary for successful implementation of both.
If you would like to be informed about what to do if you find yourself lost or in a survival situation on an outdoor adventure, this DVD will give you the knowledge you need to be better prepared for survival.

One reviewer has called Only the Strong Survive "an American Buena Vista Social Club," and that's not a bad way to describe this entertaining 2002 documentary. It certainly has a righteous pedigree: co-directors D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus have between them been responsible for films like Monterey Pop, Bob Dylan's Don't Look Back, Down from the Mountain, Startup.com, and numerous others; meanwhile, many of the great soul singers who appear here, including Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave), and Carla Thomas, have retained much of their power since their heydays decades ago. The interview portions are fun--we learn, for instance, that "the wicked Pickett" has a stash of $1,000 shirts and $6,000 suits--but it's the musical numbers that are the main attraction, and there are some good ones. Even better, the DVD's bonus features include half a dozen complete live performances not in the original film, along with audio commentary by legendary producer Jerry Wexler and several of the artists. Sure, it would have been nice if Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, and other living soul greats had also taken part, but hearing Eugene Record and the Chi-Lites singing "Oh Girl" is just about worth the price of admission alone. --Sam Graham

Songs for people with very short attention spans.......2006-07-04
With just two exceptions, of the 15 GREAT, live, concert performances available to have been included in this production, all have been trimmed to about 30 seconds in length. For those of you who have attended a performance of James Brown any time in the last 20 years, it will remind you of his technique of trying to fit 6 hours of hit music into 90 minutes. The few measures of Wilson Pickett performing "Land of a Thousand Dances" and "In The Midnight Hour", Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave) singing "Soul Man", Isaac Hayes "Theme from Shaft" and finally "Don't Let Go" were all HUGE disappointments. Just as each song begins to move your mind, body and soul, it's over.
Collector's Item.......2006-02-25
I would ordinarily give this DVD a 4 star review except for all the needless chit chat included in it. How wonderful to see Sam Moore performing again. Perhaps his voice is not the powerhouse it once was but his soul is screaming to entertain. Jerry Butler is still incredible as are most of the entertainers on this DVD. If you are a serious soul collector you need to have this. Sandy
Great Documentary!.......2006-02-21
Great documentary from people who have a love for music and giving due to those who created a culture.
Great Live Performances, Not Great Documentary.......2005-04-27
Let me say first that the performances themselves of the artists presented here are unianimously fantastic, and deserve repeated viewing. If you are a fan of soul music, and want to see the talented singers doing their great shows still somewhere before the excited audiences, this film is for you. And I really enjoyed the music part of the film.
Unfortunately, very few archive footages are used, and there is no James, Smokey, or Aretha. But the live performances (mainly from the year 1999-2000) are all wonderful. The artists recorded here include, Jerry Butler, The Chi-Lites, Isaac Hayes, Sam Moore, Ann Pebbles, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, and Mary Wilson. They all sing one song or two before the very lucky audiences.
But you may ask me, Why three stars. Oh, it's because of the directors, who do not show the due respect to the history of the soul music itself. D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus do not know which they want to make, documentary or live music recording. It seems (and probably is) that the crew only recorded whatever they can quickly, and put the footages together. How can they put Mary Wilson (ex-Supremes) and Isaac Hayes in the same film without explaining the history of the soul music? I don't see the point of putting them together except that they are both great artists.
Still some moments are very touching to see. Sam Moore reveals his painful past while he was selling illegal stuff on the street around 1973, and it's joyful to see Carla Thomas and Rufus Thomas having good time together.
As documentary 'Only the Strong Survive' is never informative. You see this movie, and your knowledge about this great music doesn't change. Still, the live performances from the recorded artists are all dynamic and thrilling. Though you might find Wilson Pickett, when off stage, a bit too talkative, his singing ('Land of 1000 Dances' and 'In the Midnight Hour') on the stage is really exciting even more than 30 years after they became the hits. Watch these great live acts, and enjoy them.
Classic DVD.......2004-09-05
Loved this presentation of staxx Records&the many Great Talents that brought the Grits&Gravy to Soul Music back in the day. great to See so Many Greats like Issac Hayes,Sam Moore, the Late Great Rufus Thomas,His Daughter Carla Thomas amongest others.must See.Wilson Pickett through down as well on here. this is Music History being presented.

D.I.Y. OR DIE: HOW TO SURVIVE AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST (VARIOUS ARTISTS)
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring, Practical, and Entertaining.......2007-05-13
Dean taps into the core of the punk rock DIY ethic by interviewing independent musicians, photographers, performance, print, film, and graphic artists. These artists are both entertaining and have profound things to say about independence, integrity and working outside of the "culture industry." The message is solid and inspiring while it isn't sugar-coated. A solid film and one to copy and share with your friends. (Its encouraged!)
A realistic review........2007-05-11
There seems to be a lot of misunderstandings about this Video / DVD.
First, part of the movie's title is "How to Survive as an independent artist" and i place an emphasis on the word SURVIVE. This video is not a guide for artists to get rich and famous in 15 minutes or less. If you are looking for hot tips on how to strike it golden, this ain't it.
This DVD is not a substitute for business school, it won't tell you how to start a record label or how to magically promote your art to make you famous.
What this video provides is an insightful and inspirational guide to artists looking for viable ways to make a living of what they love the most: their art.
Are you looking to get your music heard? why not find inspiration on Ian Mackaye, one of the fathers of hardcore rock music and the quintessential independent record company owner that has launched the career of countless punk and hardcore artists and paved the way for other independent punk labels such as Epitaph Records.
The artists interviewed on this DVD are not some of of Michael Dean's "completely unknown buddies", as some *completely* clueless reviewer put it, but well known artists such a Dave Brockie of metal shockcore GWAR, Jim Rose who's performed with his shock circus for hundreds of thousands of people on Lolapallooza festivals across the country. Photographer and filmmaker Richard Kern and performance artist / writer Lydia Lunch are fairly well known NYC underground artists around the world. Or how about producer / musician J. G. Thirlwell who at some point managed to get a record contract with Sony records and has released over seventeen full length albums including remixing artists like NIN and Marilyn Manson?
This DVD is a masterfully edited and conceived piece of work; low on slick Hollywood production effects but high on content and inspiration.
Quoting Ian Mackaye from the DVD, "you can't fail doing what you love", so any true artist will find a piece of this DVD in their artists' heart.
A realistic view of the artistic life.......2006-08-19
Portrayals of professional artists in American culture are often unrealistic (would anyone know who Jackson Pollock was if Peggy Guggenheim hadn't been paying his rent?) and/or sad (being an artist is about being depressed/tortured/chemically dependent, etc.). Michael Dean offers us a view into the lives of artists who recognize that their chosen profession requires dedication, hard work, and perhaps a slightly unconventional view of the world. Those who are looking for a step-by-step guide to 'making it' as an artist won't find that here, everyone has to find their own way. That's the basis of the DIY ethic. If you need a reminder that it IS possible to live your life as an artist, you'll be reinspired by the film. If you wonder whether you have to 'sell out' to be successful, the film will offer some answers. A very useful movie for anyone in the arts, thinking about an artistic career, or those trying to understand artists better.
F*ck film school -- give your money to Michael Dean!.......2006-06-25
Anyone familiar with the $30 _______ School books (on film, writing, and music respectively), will certainly appreciate this lil' doc produced & directed by the author of the aforementioned series. He doesn't just preach the gospel, he practices it. (the next piece of review will sound like a rip; it isn't). The movie's lackluster sound and image reproduction, no doubt shot on 1-chip DV cameras, clues one that he's not a "professional" in the popular sense. He's not concerned with such technical details, nor should he be. It's the message that counts.
The interviewed subjects make the film worth the $10 alone. MacKaye, Kern, Lunch, Rose, Thirlwell, &c, never waited for approval. They do what they want, with what they have, on their terms. No exceptions. No apologies. No compromises.
Who can argue against that?
Thanks, Mr Dean. You have a new fan.
Can't wait for the Selby doc to hit DVD.
Every artist should see this film!.......2005-01-14
This is a great movie! It deals with artists who do their art just because it's what they do. The film maker interviews artists of all types from painters to musicians to dancers. It's not a "How To" guide as some other reviewers mistakenly thought, but it does give you a look into the lives of artists who are really doing it. People who do their own thing on their own terms. For those of us that believe that is how it should be, this is an extremely well done movie, and definitely worth watching.

Description
The Amish live far outside the cultural mainstream. During the last century, they grew from 5,000, inhabiting a handful of states, to 200,000 souls living in 25 states and one Canadian province.
Preferring community to technology, the Amish live their lives in close fellowship with each other. Within their religious communities, everyone agrees on what technologies to adopt, what clothes to wear and what horse-powered transportation to drive.
A decade ago, approximately 90% of Amish earned their incomes from farming operations. Today, in some communities, less than 5% do so. Learn how the Amish have successfully responded to a tightening agricultural economy. See how their strict adherence to community values contributes to their doubling in size every 20 years.
This documentary takes you on an intimate journey into Ohio Amish life and culture. You will discover how rapid growth and economic pressures threaten their community. You will also meet a people who, as a result of creative disengagement with the culture around them, thrive.
Burton Buller documents the lives of the Amish, Hutterites, and Mennonites. His programs have appeared on PBS, Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, Hallmark Channel, ABC TV and NBC TV.
Sixty years ago, the Amish were consigned to disappear, swallowed by modernity. Today they are thriving as never before, spiritually and sociologically. The film brilliantly documents that process. - Dr. Al Keim, Professor Emeritus of History, Eastern Mennonite University

Customer Reviews:
For God's Sake,Just Read ALIVE!!!!!!.......2007-04-28
I have only seen bits and pieces of this awful piece of trash, but that's enough to scar you for LIFE!!!I'm warning you,in the first 15 minutes you see an unfortunate soul get a metal rod impaled in his stomach, which another survivor must pull out immediately, and you get to see the wonderful image of his stomach popping out through his skin. The acting is terrible, the music sickeningly maudlin and the cannibalism is absolutely tasteless and gross. If you enjoy this movie you might have serious psychological problems. In my opinion, this film should be banned.God Bless America!!!
Not the 1977 ABC movie you might have expected.......2006-03-14
If, like me, you enjoyed the 1977 ABC movie, co-produced by Robert Stigwood, with a snappy, catchy music score by Gerald Fried, and DUBBED INTO ENGLISH, including fascinating geographical and aeronautical narration about flying over the Andes, you will be disappointed. This is the same made-in-Mexico movie, but a vastly different edition. It is in Spanish with English subtitles, all narration is stripped away, and instead of Gerald Fried's gripping music score, there is merely whooshing-wind sound effects by a musical mediocrity named Raul Lavista. What a pity, the nicely trimmed-up, filled-out, tuneful 1977 ABC version replaced by this dreary, boresome ain't-cannibalism-groovy pseudo-novelty. I say skip the purchase and hope that Singa Home Entertainment brings out the ABC broadcast version.
SURVIVE! comes to DVD.......2004-04-23
The print on the new DVD of "SURVIVE - Supervivientes de los Andes" is the original uncut version of the film. The case indicates the running time as 103 minutes, but the film actually clocks in closer to 112 minutes(!). That's almost 1/2 hour longer than the original dubbed US version. I noticed several extra bits without doing a side-by-side - I think the initial skinning scene is slightly longer, there's another quick shot of a different body being skinned later on as well as some nasty business with an infected leg, and some of the trekking scenes and segments with the parents seem extended. This is all from memory, however - a researched breakdown of all the differences would definitely be a worthwhile undertaking. I was also surprised at how well the film actually holds up (especially in this original-language version) - definitely not as 'exploitative' as the American print always felt. Unfortunately, the low-budget still mars the crash scene as well as all the studio-shot scenes outside of the wrecked plane (can that snow be any more fake?), but the scenes shot on location are quite good as is the editing, music, and acting.
The print used on the DVD doesn't appear to have been 'remastered' in any way, but it looks decent enough. There are some lines here and there and some other flaws, but nothing really distracting. It's presented full-frame only and the english subtitles are burned-in. The DVD has the original spanish-trailer for the film, which does not shy away from indicating that it's about cannibalism, as well as two other trailers for other Urban Vision latin films.
Definitely a worthy purchase for fans of the film. It would still be great to get the modified American version some day, as well.

"Go to Havana, you'll come back changed.".......2005-12-03
The plot synopsis of the frothy Spanish romance "I Will Survive" makes the film sound terribly corny, but there's some originality here that raises the film above the ordinary boy-meets-girl drama. The film begins with a very brief overview of Marga's (Emma Suarez) life. She meets Roberto (Adria Collado), they buy an apartment together, but he is killed in a car accident. At the same time Marga's 'best friend' (Rosana Pastor) sleeps her way to the top and takes Marga's job. Marga is pregnant, and she struggles to survive--trying to get state assistance and wading through the necessary bureaucracy. Shortly after the baby's birth, she meets Rosa (Mirta Ibarra), an upbeat Cuban woman. Rosa takes care of the baby and this allows Marga to go back to work.
Marga manages to buy a video rental shop and here she meets a customer named Inaqui (Juan Diego Botto). Inaqui is recovering from a break up with his lover, Oscar (Alberto San Juan). At first Marga doesn't seem to have any difficulties with the knowledge that Inaqui has only ever had relationships with men. In time, however, insecurities and doubt set in, and Inaqui struggles with the possibilities of erotic encounters
The film's light touch make this a charming, bitter-sweet story, and while the pace lags at times, some of the comedy is original and completely unexpected. The brief scenes depicting Marga's family, for example, show them always sitting around the dinner table, watching football on television and arguing. Love comes for everyone in the film--Rosa and her long-term boyfriend Rolando, and a gay couple who decide to take the plunge through a civil ceremony. Actress Emma Suarez possesses a wholesomeness that is refreshing and entrancing, and she's a great deal of fun to watch. Directed by Alfonso Albacete and David Menkes, "I Will Survive" is in Spanish with English subtitles--displacedhuman
A Saucy and Tender Story of Love, Recriminations, and Waiting for the Music!.......2005-07-12
SOBREVIVIRE (I WILL SURVIVE) is a fine little film from Spain circa 1999 that because of recent important legislation in that country becomes even more pertinent than when it was made. Co-written and directed by Alfonso Albacete, with assistance from David Menkes and Lucía Etxebarría, this is a fresh look at relationships and the human needs and the compromises faced in the search for happiness. SOBREVIVIRE is probably the healthiest and most intelligent examination of pan sexuality: it takes on tough issues and allows them to nurture the comedy that is life!
After an introduction of her childhood idiosyncrasies we meet the adult Marga (the superb Emma Suárez) wholly in love with Roberto (Adrià Collado), joyfully creating a home for their upcoming marriage. There is a car accident and Marga is injured but Roberto is killed, devastating Marga who has learned that she is pregnant with Roberto's child. At the same time she loses her job due to her disruptive friend Trini (Rosana Pastor) and must strike out on her own. She is denied government funds until she gives birth to her child and in desperation she falls into a video store ownership and takes on a Cuban au pair Rosa (Mirta Ibarra) who lightens not only her domestic load but also her spirit. Some years pass and Marga and Rosa become fast friends.
As Marga begins to feel the loneliness of being a single mom she meets handsome Iñaqui (Juan Diego Botto) in her video store. Iñaqui is recovering from a breakup with his boyfriend Oscar (Alberto San Juan) and is as attracted to Marga as she is to him. Iñaqui informs Marga he is gay, a fact that Rosa and other friends have already prepared her for. In full knowledge of each other's pasts they embark on a relationship that flowers with a subtlety and tenderness that allows us to feel the anxieties of each while letting the innate comedy shine through.
Iñaqui tries to forget his sexual orientation and is even able to override some temptations that occur. Marga fears that eventually the warmly human Iñaqui will eventually leave her and they admit to each other that neither has 'heard the music' that is supposed to come with romance. Rosa meanwhile has found love with a performer, Rolando (Manuel Manquiña) and convinces Marga to fly to Cuba to be part of her marriage. When Marga returns she realizes her devotion to Iñaqui, and since that devotion is mutual is shared, the two marry. How the film ends is magical yet real and deserves to be discovered by each viewer. Suffice it to say that it is a very realistic and intelligent ending.
Each of the actors in this bouncy little film is excellent with special kudos to Emma Suárez, a truly fine actress. Yet all of the other main characters are superbly handled and the supporting cast is equally fine, especially the 'together couple' José (Alex Brendemühl) and Carlos (Javier Martín). The music, the sets, the pacing, the editing and especially the direction are first class. This is one of those little movies that deserves a very wide audience. In Spanish with English subtitles. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

Customer Reviews:
Low Budget History.......2006-12-10
DVD came in an envelope with no case - only a paper sleeve. Can't expect much more for $2.95. No narration - no sound, no captions. Some good footage though. If you were to view this DVD not knowing there was an earthquake and fire in San Francisco in 1906, you'd have thought it was bombed. Shows well the destruction and devastation. This DVD would be a good candidate for a knowledgeable narration and better editing.
