Saw II brings back many features of the original Saw: elaborate sadistic scenarios designed to "test" the victims' will to live; Tobin Bell as the Machiavellian (yet doomed) serial killer Jigsaw; Shawnee Smith as Amanda, a survivor of one of Jigsaw's "games", forced to play again; Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers), whose role as a detective is considerably expanded; and the stunningly godawful dialogue of screenwriter Leigh Whannel. The set-up this time is even more preposterous than before, as a rough-and-tumble cop named Eric (Donnie Whalberg, Band of Brothers) watches, on video monitors, his son trapped in a house filled with nerve gas and a handful of other victims, all of whom are mysteriously connected. Eric has captured Jigsaw, but the implacable killer refuses to reveal where the cop's son is being held... unless Eric will play by Jigsaw's rules. Fans of Saw will love Saw II, as the tortures are more gruesome than before; viewers who found Saw either detestable or laughable won't like Saw II either, as the characters rarely behave like actual people (even when a moment's explanation would solve a conflict, no one bothers to communicate, even though their lives are on the line). It's a festival of body fluids, agonized grimaces, and shrieks of pain--and if that's your thing, this is your movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Same game, different rules.......2007-06-21

If you saw the first Saw, you'll be pleased to hear that it has spawned two other movies using the same twists. Although some say that Saw II isn't as good as the original, it certainly stands on its own.

So what's this movie about? If you've seen the original (and if you haven't, I suggest you do), you know what the basic storyline is about. In this particular movie, we have a group of people stuck in a house. Their ultimate goal? To find out the combination to a safe that contains an antidote. What happens if they don't find out the combination? A gas will enter the house and they will eventually die.

So what's to like about this film? First, we have some of the same characters from the original as well as a couple actors/actresses that are familiar (including 7th Heaven's Beverley Mitchell, Donnie Wahlberg, and the lovely Shawnee Smith). We also have Tobin Bell, the character who at the end of the first Saw was discovered to be behind the "game". Second, those who love the traps will shriek in delight with the traps in this particular film. I actually had to turn my head during a couple of them because they were too painful (pun intended) to watch. Third, the storyline in this particular film changes a bit and provides the same shock that you experienced at the end of the first film.

And what's not to like? You probably should watch the original before checking this one out. I personally hadn't seen the first Saw before I saw the sequel and although I understood a good portion of it, a lot more would have made sense if I saw the original.

If you're into gory movies like Saw (and if you've seen the first one), be sure to add this one to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the original but enjoyable sequel........2007-05-05

Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is back! this time he traps a helpless group of several people people (Shawnee Smith, Erik Knudsen, Tim Burd, Franky G, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Glenn Plummer, Tony Nappo) in a booby-trapped filled house conducted by Jigsaw and his sick twisted ideas. Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) discovers Jigsaw himself for he must play the game if his son and the other victims can survive.

Enjoyable and fairly grisly sequel to the suprise instant new horror classic "Saw" has writer-and-director James Wan as executive producer. The acting is good in some places but there is some more memorable moments of torture and gore such as the now infamous cringe-inducing "Pit of Syringes" and the gunblast to the eyeball boobie trap, though nowhere as great as the original this is still a fairly watchable and violent sequel.

This unrated uncut 2-Disc DVD set contains the alternate unrated cut not shown in theaters with excellent extras like two audio commentaries, theatrical trailer, a fun "Play Me" set top navigation game much like the one on the "Nightmare on Elm Street" boxset, The making of "Saw II" multi-featurette, "Zombie" a short student film from the director of this movie, and "The story behind the story" multi-featurette.

3 out of 5 stars Unbelievable..........2007-04-28

Saw was unbelievable. Saw 2 is too, but for totally the wrong reasons. The original was... original! It was innovative. Edgy. A cool thriller. Suspenseful. Exceptionally well plotted. This... is derivative garbage. In all but title, it's nothing to do with the original really. Yes, the villain is resurrected. Yes, there are wondrous ways for people to die. Yes, people are trapped with only fiendishly clever ways for them to escape... but where's the gripping concept that kept you glued from the first minute with the original? Where are the clever twists, the intricate plotting, the "Ohhhh, didn't expect that!"? This is just one of those sequels that has no other aim but to cash in on the success of its predecessor. Such a waste. I bought this, unfortunately. I will not be rushing to watch it a second time.

5 out of 5 stars WOW... awesome movie.......2007-04-04

this movie kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole 90 minutes... especially when the ending of the movie came around. all i can say is expect a big twist. when the movie was over, i had to sit for about 5 minutes and think about the ending.... and then i realized that i was an idiot for not noticing all the clues that showed up during the movie lol. anyway, this movie deserves a 5 star rating just for the ending itself.

5 out of 5 stars Shockingly good sequel.......2007-03-27

Saw II is that rare movie that stays intriguing and believable the entire way through, while maintaining a cohesive storyline and gore to spare. The acting is solid, the scares are real, and the viewer is trying just as hard as Donnie Wahlberg's Detective Matthews to solve the mystery. What's most amazing is that all the clues really are right before your eyes.

At the beginning of the film, Jigsaw has committed another grisly murder, and left his calling card for Detective Matthews to track him down. Matthews reluctantly takes the case and quickly locates Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) in his warehouse lair. But this is only the beginning of another one of Jigsaw's intricate games.

Now eight people, including Matthews' son, are trapped in a house where deadly nerve gas is seeping through the walls and into their bodies. As the police try to locate the house and figure out a way to rescue the prisoners, they are also trying to figure their own way out together, while fighting amongst themselves to find out what connects them all.

The suspense in this film is palpable and Tobin Bell's Jigsaw is one of the best horror franchise "bad guys" in years. His twisted sense of morality: "Those that don't appreciate life do not deserve it" is the kind of terrible explanation that makes a psychopath real and frightening.

The twists that this film takes are surprising and show the kind of intelligence that the majority of horror schlock coming out these days is severely lacking.

The DVD extras are truly spectacular. The viewer gets a look at how the set designers laid out every one of the various traps in the film, from the needle pit to the furnace trap. All the props are also examined (the bat with nails in it, etc.). Overall, this is the kind of horror film that is watchable over and over again and the kind of film that makes a great addition to any collection.

Product Description

Jean de Florette is an evocative adaptation of the highly regarded French novel. Two 1920s farmers engage in a bitter rivalry as one tries to tend to a plot of land and the other deviously undermines his efforts in order to conceal a valuable spring. The peasant farmer (Gérard Depardieu) who comes to the countryside to tend the land he has inherited is a naive and trusting soul seeking only to provide for his wife and daughter, while his neighbor (Yves Montand) is intent on doing whatever he can to discourage and demoralize the farmer so that he can take the land for himself. This simple tale unfolds in a wrenching fashion to a tragic conclusion, bringing forth questions about human nature and the prevalence and price of greed. Along with its follow-up, Manon of the Spring, this film will leave an indelible impression on anyone who sees it.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-05-08

These two movies combined are the most beautiful I have ever seen in every respect. Gerard Depardieu has long since established himself in many genres, but as the poor guy who takes all the hard knocks and keeps on getting back up again, he's as good as they get. Emanuelle Beart is absolutely gorgeous as (adult) Manon, the scenery of the Luberon is amazing, and when I was offered a chance to visit that area by friends in France I jumped at it purely based on the wonderful memories of this movie experience. I had been hoping to get a copy on dvd for as long as dvds have been an option and have had the book for many years now. I am a true fan of this very special story which surely could not be depicted any more beautifully than it is here.

5 out of 5 stars The source of love is within not without.......2007-04-16

Jean de Florette

This film is in two parts (the second called Manon des Sources) but it is best seen as one film running over 230m. It tells of the tragedy overtaking two families over three generations in Provence during and after the first world war, all because of a lost love letter. Because he thinks he's lost the love of his life Cesar pins all his hopes on his only relative, and feels hatred for Florette's son by another man. He ruins him, only to find too late he's made a terrible mistake. It's a story of love turning to bitterness and spite, which leads in the end to self destruction.

Both films benefit from three of the greatest performances in French cinema, from Daniel Auteuil, Gerard Depardieu and Yves Montand.

The first film, Jean de Florette, suffers however from some major defects. The plot lurches on from unlikely coincidence to unlikely coincidence (we are asked to believe that the conspirators accidentally kill not one but two owners of the land they covert). At the end we see Manon just happening to come upon them as they just happen to unblock the spring, and understanding all - in the second film, Manon des Sources, Manon seems to have forgotten this, as she is upset when she just happens to overhear two poachers expounding the plot to one another about midway through that film. And pacing flags in the first film as we see Jean exhausting himself trying to deal with the drought, with lots of close ups of his suffering face while dramatic music swells from the soundtrack. We wonder why he's the only one affected by this drought, as all the other farmers seem to spend their time gambling and drinking in the pub. Some of these idlers do mention they might lose crops, but apparently aren't prepared to do anything much about it.

Regarded as a separate film, Jean de Florette can plausibly be accused of exploitative melodrama to an excessive degree (and very effectively done too). Seen as part of a longer film however the slowness and even the excesses add to the cumulative force of the denouement, as the story of what happened all those years ago is gradually revealed. The direction in the second part of the film (Manon des Sources) is much surer, as Berri, freed from the need to establish character, brings the tragedy to a devastating climax. Even if you cavil at the likelihood of a French peasant girl in the 20s or 30s dancing naked in the fields (her mother has abandoned her to go off and be an opera singer) or object to the clumsiness of a comedic treatment of an expert sent to advise on the drought who baffles the villages by spouting geological technicalities, there is no denying the skill with which Provincial farming life is depicted. Anybody who sees the film will understand how its people fall in love with this landscape, and will very likely do so themselves. It is perhaps important to reflect that this is a tragedy, with implications for all walks of life, and not just a story of meanness and double dealing among French farmers.

Anchor Bay gives Just Jaeckin's legendary 1974 erotic drama Emmanuelle an appropriately sumptuous DVD presentation, featuring uncut prints of the original and its two official sequels, 1975's Emmanuelle 2 and 1977's Goodbye Emmanuelle, in a three-disc set. All three films, which star Sylvia Kristel in the title role, are handsomely mounted adults-only fare, and their lush photography, exotic locations, and arousing (but not explicit) bedroom couplings not only helped to change softcore features, but also offered an alternative to XXX for mainstream audiences.

Based on a memoir by the wife of a delegate to Thailand, Emmanuelle focuses on the sexual awakening of a naive French diplomat's spouse at the hands of an experienced older man (Alain Cuny). First-time director Jaeckin and producer Yves Rousset-Rouard eschewed going the pornographic route with the story, and instead concentrated on the natural beauty of the Thailand setting and their star, 20-year-old Dutch model Kristel. The film was a runaway success in Europe and America, where it was successfully promoted as an erotic film devoid of porn's misogynistic tendencies. In addition to its box-office impact, Emmanuelle encouraged other softcore filmmakers to showcase travelogue-style locations and less sniggering storylines.

Emmanuelle's success naturally precipitated sequels, and two more adventures followed: Emmanuelle 2 (subtitled The Joys of a Woman in the States), which moved the action to Hong Kong; and Goodbye Emmanuelle, which sent the libertine to the Seychelles in search of a meaningful relationship. Respective directors Francis Giacobetti and Francois Leterrier's efforts were appropriately spicy, but Rousset-Rouard wisely decided to quit while he was ahead after the third picture. The series' worldwide appeal prompted a string of cheap and strange ripoffs, many featuring Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, who appears in Emmanuelle 2. But for cult movie fans, Anchor Bay's set offers the real Emmanuelle in all of her undraped glory. --Paul Gaita

Her name evokes visions of lush sensual discovery and the extremes of forbidden ecstasy. She is Emmanuelle, and these are the films that changed the look and feel of erotic cinema forever. The incomparably beautiful Sylvia Kristel stars in this landmark adult trilogy that begins with the sumptuous "Emmanuelle," continues with the explosive "Emmanuelle 2," and climaxes in the daring final chapter "Good-Bye Emmanuelle," which is only available in this collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best character approach for an adult series.......2007-05-26

Of these films only the first is known as being a benchmark in erotic cinema and although none of the films are good all around there are things to enjoy about all of them. I find all of them beautifully photographed and locations, but the first one has the best storyline and I think that's why it's remembered so fondly. With that being said it's also too mild for my taste, but I can definitely appreciate it.

The second Emmanuelle film is the one you should truly get to see has how erotic things can get. It doesn't have the story that you might feel is essential because it's all about Emmanuelle and her husband doing whatever pleases them sexually, so it's all about the detour and as such it has a lot of sexy scenes that are unconnected to plot, so it's good for people who like to skip around in scenes, but the this movie is the best shot film of the series without a doubt. It's beautiful from head to toe. I think this is probably more erotic than stuff that's around nowadays, I'm not sure, I'm not a connosieur of the genre, but it seems the new stuff is made on a factory line, and this has some semblance of artistic merit, even if it's not essentially dramatic.

The last film is the worst for a few important reasons. 1)the producers had to kill it, since they realized there was no future in making these movies with success being controlled by political climate so they ended in the most conservative way possible, they took the fun out the sex, the beauty out of the nudity, the gauziness out of the visuals, and the Emmanuelle out of the story. It doesn't work in comparison to the other movies because it's specifically about Emmanuelle's gradual dislike of sex simply for pleasure and has her fall in love with some guy, who the movie isn't interested in. While life changes are inevitable, this series brings with it a certain expectation and the love scenes are a bore, not erotic, or even mildly titillating. Worst of all, the man who plans Jean is given the worst task of trying to seem like a jerk and do nothing else. Yes, it's the most dramatically stagnant movie in the series, but the movie boringly moves along a crucial plot point that brought the end to the series. I just wish they would've only made two and not even done a third. This movie is a funeral.

As for the extras, the featurettes are wonderful and gradually get shorter as time goes along. I wish the second one would've been longer, but you can't always get what you want.

2 out of 5 stars How much is too much!.......2007-01-06

I never tire of the original, yet this collection was tiring.

1 out of 5 stars Emmanuelle Collection is totally cut!.......2006-09-20

I recently bought the "Emmanuelle Collection" for nearly $100 and what a disappointment! According to the totally false advertising in the "Editorial reviews" these movies are presented complete and uncut. This is so not true. All three movies are cut, but Emmanuelle 2, the Joys of a Woman, generally regarded as the best of the series, is literally butchered! Everything from the keyhole anime sequence to the incredibly beautiful bathouse sequence is cut to shreds. In particular, the bathhouse scene, a masterpiece of gentle sensuality, is completely obliterated in this butcher's cut. Generally speaking, most of the eroticism in all three famous erotic films (and I love these films, and saw them uncut in the theater, and own Emmanuelle 2 uncut on laser disc) has been destroyed by someone who cut the films (and someone who particularly hates sensual scenes of women together). These films are valueless, as their essential appeal as erotic viewing is gone. This is a total ripoff and the claim of being uncut is a total lie, as I can prove to anyone who wants to fire up my laser player, or who has any kind of memory of how beautiful these films used to be before someone took big scissors to them. Don't buy!!

5 out of 5 stars The original Emmanuelle, and the best.......2004-08-24

This boxed set presents the three original Emmanuelle movies, the ones starring Sylvia Kristel. There were lots of imitators, most ranging from bad to worse and beyond. At the time of the first Emmanuelle, though none of that had yet happened - please hold that happy thought. Perhaps these three aren't high art, but they're generally good entertainment for adults. They are also so different from each other that they deserve to be reviewed individually, not as a lump.

* Emmanuelle: Back in the 70s, this was a groundbreaking movie. It was openly erotic, and openly meant for the general public. I'll leave the social commentary to others. For me, it's just a beautiful movie. It's set in beautiful tropical locations. It stars beautiful actresses, back before implants were part of the uniform. Most of all, it shows beautiful (if artificial) exchanges of physical affection between Emmanuelle and just about everyone, man and woman.

Still, there were a few things about this movie that I didn't care for. It usually depicts Emmanuelle as a passive figure, to be led and acted upon. I prefer the stronger character in the sequel. Later parts of the movie depict coercion, something I really don't care for. The haughty poseur at the end was annoying, but distantly true to the book. Still, book fans shouldn't get their hopes up. This movie is its own creature, and pleasant enough if taken on its own terms.

* Emmanuelle 2: The best of the bunch, I think. This is a warmly sensuous film. This might even be the one to use for introducing a shy viewer to movies about physical happiness. Emmanuelle is fully her own woman - every scene lies well within her consent and enjoyment. A new character, Anna Maria, is a sweet, innocent young thing. Emmanuelle, of course, broaches that innocence in an elegantly filmed sequence of encounters. A few scenes, like the infamous "Jade Club", come across as crude, but only when meant to. Still, they don't seem threatening. That's another aspect of this film that I like better than the first.

It's too much to say that this movie has a plot, but it does have a story line of sorts. The movie is really just about happy eroticism, though, the kind that relies more on your imagination than on actual imagery. It's sort of like a musical where I come out humming the tunes even if I can't remember the words. Couples might like this movie, even bashful couples, and might like playing along with the actors on screen.

* Goodbye Emmanuelle: This is the third and last of Kristel's Emmanuelle movies, but don't hold her responsible. The backer had run into censorship problems with the second movie, and wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. The result is a disappointing attempt at being serious. It completely lacks the warm mood and physicality of the two earlier efforts. Even the background music has a very different style, one that I found far less successful in framing the visuals and dialog.

It tries to show Emmanuelle and husband Jean growing into a more stable, monogamous relationship. Instead, it just descends into petty jealousies and possessiveness. Jean, especially, pulls tricks that would have seemed silly even in high school. Perhaps the movie meant to show swelling affection and bruised feelings. Instead, it just showed swollen egos and bruised pride.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best official "Emmanuelle" films!.......2007-06-18

Following the hugely successful first Emmanuelle came this lushly photographed classic sequel, perhaps even surpassing the original. What it has in common with the first Emmanuelle: wonderful score, beautiful locations, and the lovely Sylvia Kristel. These are intelligent films with a sense of humour, much in the spirit of the novels the films are based on.

Those looking for hardcore thrills will be let down, this is strictly R rated fare by todays standards... but if you are looking for a beautiful world of fantasy and desire, this is the film for you.

Glad I chose HD-DVD over the lame Blu-Ray, Batman Begins (which is waay better than Saw II isnt available on Blu-Ray. If you want to see an incredible transfer but a HD player with Batman Begins, and Troy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good transfer...but could be better........2007-02-13

Good movie with a quality picture and sound...although I think the first Saw looked and sounded a little better. I am pleased but am also hopefull that I will be blown away by a title's transfer soon.

5 out of 5 stars Looks amazing in high-def!.......2007-01-28

I love this movie, and watching it on Blu-ray on my new Sony 1080p TV was phenomenal! The scene with the needles made me cringe, had to look away for a minute. Anyways, glad I chose Blu-ray over HD-DVD, since this title isn't available on the lame HD-DVD format.

Product Description

3 out of 5 stars MI 1 & 2.......2007-02-12

MI 1 has a story line that hangs together. It is a little fantastic, but that's what Mission Impossible is, so some stretching of likelihood doesn't bother the viewer. This movie is entertainment, pure and simple. It does not pretend to be other than that.

MI 2 is a different kind of movie. A bit fantastic too, but you expect a little fantasy; so it does not disturb you. The cinematography here is much better than that of its predecessor. The use of light and shaddow is quite artistic. The story is good until near the end where the production deteriorates into preposterous chase scenes that go on and on and on and on. Those are followed by an even more preposterous fight scene that never seems to end; the hero and villain never seem to tire from the exertion, and do not deteriorate from the dastardly blows they rain back and forth upon each other. A lttle fantasy is expected, but the chase scenes and the fight grow immensely tiresome and unreal and ruin the movie. The movie ends like an overdone steak.

Everthing about the shipment was perfect. I received it on time, it was in excellent condition, I couldn't have asked for better from a vendor!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice set of two solid thrillers .......2006-05-07

Beyond the basic concept the "Mission: Impossible" films have little to do with the original TV series. In fact this is a recreation for an audience brought up on high octane action films. De Palma's film reinvents the popular TV franchise although many long time fans were probably upset that Jim Phelps was played by Jon Voight and that he's killed in the first 15 minutes of the film. Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is accused by his own agency of engineering the death of his IMF team to protect his identity as a traitor. Hunt suddenly alone must assemble a team (Ving Rhames, Jean Reno)of his own to help clear his name.

The updated transfer looks marvelous here with richer, bolder colors and an anamorphic high definition transfer that improves on the previous DVD. This also features some decent extras although they have less to do with the history of the show and translating it to the big screen than with Cruise and Brian De Palma's attempt to update it for a new audience. There's also a preview for MI3 included as well as a ticket for free theater admission to MI3 until 5/14/06.

"MI2" plays much more like a cross between a Bond film and a Hong Kong action movie. That's good in a way because it's every bit as different from the first as the third is from the second. Director John Woo keeps "MI2" a fresh adventure. This time Ethan Hunt is directed by his boss (Anthony Hopkins in a nice cameo)to discover who stole the dangerous Chimera virus and its antidote. This nasty virus is 100% lethal and if the cure isn't given within a certain time frame it's worthless. Hunt discovers and tracks down a disgruntled IMF member (Doug Ray Scott who was originally to play Wolverine in "X-Men" until he was injured on this film)but the clock is ticking as Chimera may fall into the wrong hands.

This edition is the same as the first with the exception of the second disc which has some promos for the third installment as well as some featurettes not included on the previous single disc edition. The transfer and extras on the first discs is the same though.

If you don't own either film this is a worthwhile set to get but if you own the second film already I would purchase the first remastered edition separately. Both films are entertaining and have top notch supporting cast, direction and writing. The script for the first film was rewritten by Cruise's buddy legendary screenwriter Robert Town ("Chinatowne")as was the second film although it's based on a story by Ron Moore and Brannon Braga ("Star Trek: First Contact").

5 out of 5 stars move over resident evil.......2007-05-07

For those of you that grew up watching the classic zoombie movies such as night of the living dead this movie is for you. A millitary team must neutralize a school zone and collect a blood sample from a Zombie after and outbreak. This the second movie in the house of the dead series. If you like this I also recommend the Resenent evil movie. This movie should be fine for kids ages 17 up do to heavy gore language and other inappropriate content. Can the millitary send these zombie back to the depths of hades find out in the thrilling conclusion.

3 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..........2007-04-21

I don't think that it even bares mentioning that this is a step up from Uwe Boll's fantastic turd fest that was the original House of the Dead. If you're a fan of zombie movies, then this sequel is definitely up your ally, its tongue-in-cheek humor and silliness combined with a few points of genuine originality make for a fun view.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay.......2007-04-08

A professor tries to bring back the dead and accidentally creates a zombie virus that threatens the whole world. A secret government agency is sent to save the day. The zombies were okay, but the dialoque at times was ridiculous. All the male characters acted the same, and were hard to tell apart. It's really a 1 star movie, I only gave it 3 stars because I think Emauelle Vagier is a beautiful woman with a distinct gravely voice and she could be a big star if she got better parts. Still, if you are a zombie fan check this movie out on a slow night.

3 out of 5 stars IMPROVEMENT OVER THE FIRST, ONLY JUST.......2007-03-07

Im a huge fan of zombie movies, but I have a few criticisms of the two House of the Dead movies.

I dont know where they were going with the first movie because they just rushed it. There's no connection whatsoever between the movie and the three House of the Dead video games, maybe that wasnt their intention so I really didnt like the first one.

The second one also had no association with the video games but the style of the movie did resemble what we play in the arcades. There were a number of flaws in the movie but the biggest one that I thought was ridiculous was if humans are vunerable to infection by a zombie through bite or scratch, what about contact to zombie blood. I do give points for the gore, but when they're covered in zombie blood wouldnt they eventually become infected anyway?. Just doesnt make sense.

2 out of 5 stars Not a total waste of time.......2007-01-01

But that's about as far as I'd go. Decent production values, competent zombie attacks. I saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel, and it was better than most of the CG garbage movies they show. But if I had the money, I'd go to the arcade and play the video game, not buy this.

This second volume of this gothic Japanimation epic takes us on a journey with the spiritualist Himiko, who desperately searches for the Vampire Princess. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Occult -- Japanese style!.......2003-10-29

Originally released in the late 80s, this anime is a bit outdated but thanks to a fine remastering of vol.'s One and Two of the VPM (Vampire Princess Miyu) OAV's that came out before the more recent TV series, which I haven't seen yet but is said to be more fluff, the picture and sound quality are just like new.

Eternally 13, Miyu is a vampire unlike any other. She often appears as a schoolgirl in broad daylight with an innocent, childlike persona, but a hidden darkness lies within her falsified demeanor (or is it?). Her laughter rises up into the air, echoing all around you, cutting through those who desire her razor sharp kiss, yet she claims to not be the monster that spiritualist Himiko makes her out to be for her destiny is to capture and return the Shinma (creatures that are half-Demon, half-God) to the darkness where hence they came from, but with the help of her devoted guardian, Larva, who was once a evil Shinma himself.

In "Fragile Armor" (this is my least favorite of the four), Himiko agrees to help Miyu defeat a ghastly armored monster. In return, Miyu tells the tale of how she met Larva, her silent companion. Later, Himiko learns of the tragic fate of a husband and wife. Meanwhile, a beautiful young man with a frightening laugh circles and waits. Who is he? What is the secret of the armor? And what of the Shinma? Can Himiko put the pieces of the puzzle together in time?

"In Frozen Time" (my absolute favorite!), Himiko travels to Kamakura, a childhood home. There, she dreams of herself as a child, running in terror from a mysterious mansion. Now the mansion has a new tenant: Miyu. Miyu at last tells all -- of her discovery of her true nature after her first meeting with Larva, of the secret concealed by Miyu's parents, and of the night that Darkness and Shinma gathered together. And, finally, Himiko realizes what it is that has bound her destiny with Miyu's...forever!

Extras on this DVD include a lavish image gallery set to the gorgeous, melancholy music of Kawai Kenji.

3 out of 5 stars from Fringe Video Fanzine Issue #006.......2003-03-04

In-depth sometimes confusing character driven manga with an occult edge about a girl who just happens to be a vampire. At times the animation is remarkable, other times still un-moving animated cells fill the screen. -/In "Unearthly Kyoto" As demons strive to gain control of the earths mortal plane a spiritalist named Himiko travels to Japan to help a child in a coma. Rumors of vampire attacks lead Himiko to discover the mysterious Vampire Princess Miyu. Although its hard to tell at first, ["...is she friend or fiend?"] this little girl-like princess is battling the evil Shinma demons who attack the human race. -/"A Banquet of Marionettes" explores the Miyu charactor further as we discover that she offers humans immortality in exchange for the blood she so requires. The last episode on disc one begins with several mysterious disappearances at a school. At the site of each, a strange doll has been found. Here we meet Miyu, now apparently a student, lusting after the soul of the school hero.
In the second disc Miyu offers the spiritalist the truth about herself, in return for her help battling the demon Shinma. Miyu's job is to gather stray Shinma on Earth, and return them to the dark. Aiding her is Larva, a silent, masked companion, protector, and friend. In -/"Fragile Armor" Miyu and Himiko team up to battle the armored monster as Himiko learns further secrets of the vampire, but can she put the pieces of the puzzle together in time. The last episode -/"Frozen Time" has the spiritalist learning of the small girls past, and their connection and future together. These original four episodes are contained on two discs. Another 21 episodes exist to confuse matters further.

5 out of 5 stars What is Shinma, What is Not?.......2002-12-29

This DVD contains the last two episodes of the OAV (not the made for TV) version of 'Vampire Princess Miyu.' The four OAV stories are not simply stories of the supernatural with the intervention of Miyu as a given. Instead, they are as much the story of a spiritualist (Himiko) who believes she must oppose Miyu, but is gradually coming to realize that Miyu is not as evil as Himiko initially believed.

In the first DVD in this series, very little effort is made to offer any explanation for Miyu and her fate. Instead, Miyu drops dues ex machine into one of Himiko's cases. This time, we are given considerable insight into Miyu's origins and her relationship with Larva.

In the first episode on this DVD, 'Fragile Armor,' Miyu is forced to ask Himiko's help in stopping a rampant suit of armor that keeps insisting it is a Shinma. In addition, Larva has been trapped in a mask, and Miyu hopes the young witch can free him. Miyu knows the spirit is not a Shinma, and is powerless to attack what is actually a human spirit. However, Himiko can effect the latter, and the ensuing chaos drives out the real Shinma from hiding. Miyu demands Larva's release and finally enters into full battle with the Shinma.

'Frozen Time' has Himiko traveling to her childhood home, where she intends to investigate an old mansion that disturbed her dreams several times. This old mansion has a habit of disappearing and reappearing and Himiko discovers that it is the original home of Miyu. For the first time we are given a glimpse into the tragic story that drives Miyu. This is almost the only time that much is made of Miyu's history. The television series focuses more on Larva's story.

Artistically, this DVD is probably the high point of the both the OAV and TV series. There is a dark, art nouveau flavor to the work, and a great deal of intense dialog. It is unfortunate that the OAV series did not survive for a few more episodes, although the TV series has much that is admirable it lacks the intensity provided by the original series.

5 out of 5 stars really good anime.......2002-07-22

Anime always seems to have so much potential. And yet, it usually [is not good]. However, Vampire Princess Miyu is the best! Rather than get carried away with my enthusiasm and tell you all the details of the plot (a.k.a., the OTHER review) let me just say that these stories have *character development*--oh so rare. And they're dark. And strangely erotic. And the author isn't afraid to present heroic characters, which is accomplished without losing an interesting element of moral ambiguity.

5 out of 5 stars The dark secret! Finally revealed!.......2001-07-13

When strange and childlike Vampire Princess Miyu requestss the help of Himiko, the spiritualist, to aid her in freeing her shinma, Larva, Himiko is very skeptical. But in return for her help, Himiko is told the strange tale of how Miyu found Larva. And on top of that, all three have to join forces to battle the most poerful shinma yet. And it doesn't end there. Himiko leaves Kyoto for a short time to go to where she grew up. There, she is confronted by a strange and terrifying house from her past, and finally learns why Miyu is really hunting the shinma. Both tales, not unlike the two previous ones in Volume one, display beautiful animation and brilliant plots mixed with a breath taking musical score. The perfect item for any serious anime collector.
