As a bleak and chilling mood piece, The Machinist gets under your skin and stays there. Christian Bale threw himself into the title role with such devotion that he shed an alarming 63 pounds to play Trevor Reznik (talk about "starving artist"!), a factory worker who hasn't slept in a year. He's haunted by some mysterious occurrence that turned him into a paranoid husk, sleepwalking a fine line between harsh reality and nightmare fantasy--a state of mind that leaves him looking disturbingly gaunt and skeletal in appearance. (It's no exaggeration to say that Bale resembles a Holocaust survivor from vintage Nazi-camp liberation newsreels.) In a cinematic territory far removed from his 1998 romantic comedy Next Stop Wonderland, director Brad Anderson orchestrates a grimy, nocturnal world of washed-out blues and grays, as Trevor struggles to assemble the clues of his psychological conundrum. With a friendly hooker (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and airport waitress (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón) as his only stable links to sanity, Trevor reaches critical mass and seems ready to implode just as The Machinist reveals its secrets. For those who don't mind a trip to hell with a theremin-laced soundtrack, The Machinist seems primed for long-term status as a cult thriller on the edge. --Jeff Shannon

Description

THE MACHINIST is the story of Trevor Reznik, a machinist who hasn't slept in over a year. Working in a machine shop, Trevor faces the usual occupational hazards, yet his extreme fatigue only makes them worse, causing him to accidentally cut off a co-worker's hand. What Trevor suffers from clearly isn't a typical case of insomnia…

4 out of 5 stars Have to admit, I didnt' like it at first..........2007-06-14

After watching it a few times, I can appreciate what they were trying to do with this film. If you can, watch it when you're really, really, really tired.

5 out of 5 stars A film with some serious atmosphere.......2007-06-14

Christian Bale's Trevor Reznik hasn't slept in a year. He's so thin you can see his ribs and spine. His main social interactions are with his regular call girl and the waitress at the local airport late-night diner. He's obsessed with cleaning his body and house with bleach.

As the movie opens, we see a husk of a man inhabiting the grimy, industrial streets of a coastal city. Reznik is a machinist, and lately he's been seeing a new guy at work that no one else can see. Reznik is obviously hiding from some traumatic even in his past, and the movie consists of the unfolding of the jigaw puzzle of his life. The Machinist is an atmospheric movie, one that will transport you to a waking-nightmare state of dark colors, somber music, and a general haziness between reality and horror.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie ever!!!!!!!.......2007-05-20

I love this movie to death!!!!! My favorite type of movies are suspense movies and this one reigns supreme. I consider myself pretty smart, but this movie had me confused in the beginning. I had no clue, which is what makes this movie great!!! And Christian Bale....EXCELLENT!!! Now, everytime I watch it, I pick up more clues. It's a masterpiece and I highly recommended to anyone who like to challenge their brain!

5 out of 5 stars NERVOUSLY BRILLIANT.......2007-05-03

It had been a while since a movie shocked me. "The Machinist" is about a man who can't sleep. He is the thinnest man you might ever see for two odd hours. You might wonder if that is reason enough for you to watch this film and that is precisely why I took me a while to finally watch it. I like films that are based solely around one character but The Machinist is something else. I thought it would be easy to write a review for this film. Well, it's about time I start mine.

I liked "Fight Club" but didn't like "Memento" too much and I thought "Seven" was good while I thought "Lucky Number Slevin" insulted movies. Some of these films werent as good as the others. The more popular ones had one or two characters to keep you interested. I liked Machinist because it had everything a character should be and more. In Trevor Reznik's heart resides a man of much mystery, intrigue and forgetfulness.

I mean, 11 minutes into the film I knew I was going to love it. It is a masterpiece because it has to be watched again to be appreciated and understood. Some might argue and find faults - too bad for them. Overall, much like my fellow readers who've written very good reviews for the Machinist, I felt the background score was truly magnificent while the semi-lucid conscience of characters had it's own charm.

The Machinist will grab your nerve and noodle it. Easily among my top 15 films of all time and I just saw it a week back. I will now go and watch every film by Christian Bale (loved Prestige) and meanwhile you should go watch The Machinist. Not to forget, fans of "Secret Window" might like this film, too.

My Rating -> 9.5/10

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

"The Machinist" is a very interesting film with a simply stunning performance from Christian Bale as Trevor - what he did was amazing and I mean not only his physical transformation that by itself was a real sacrifice an actor can commit for his Art. Besides Bale's performance, the film is masterfully directed and what is very important, clever written. It is one of few films that get under your skin and stay there. The ending was very satisfying and put all pieces of the puzzle together.

I read and heard that the film is a combination of "Memento", "Fight Club", "Angel Heart", Insomnia", "Thinner", and "Identity". "The Machinist" may bring all these pictures to memory but it is a masterfully crafted and compelling study of one man's journey from his crime to the punishment where he himself was a criminal, a victim, a prosecutor, and the executioner. (Trevor read the wrong Dostoevsky's novel - he should have read "Crime and Punishment") The one film I was reminded of while watching "The Machinist" - David Cronenberg's "Spider". Both films take place in the atmosphere of confusion, paranoia, guilt, and unbearable terror and both have the unforgettable performances by Christian Bale and Ralph Fiennes as two very disturbed individuals.

Judy Holliday's final film, Bells Are Ringing, is, fittingly enough, a tailor-made vehicle for her brassy talent. She'd won a Tony for the Broadway version of the show, playing an overly sympathetic telephone receptionist who gets involved in her customers' lives. Betty Comden and Adolph Green adapted their stage musical, amusingly framing the film as a TV commercial for "Susanswerphone," the answering service Judy works for. Director Vincente Minnelli, in one of his less inspired outings, seems content to showcase Holliday's crack comic timing, which appears to have been transferred almost intact from the stage. Despite the somewhat muted tone, there are delightful bits: a typical Comden & Green showbiz party (with a number about name-dropping), Frank Gorshin's send-up of a Brando-inflected actor, and Dean Martin crooning while shouldering his way through a Manhattan crowd. "The Party's Over," that unforgettable end-of-the-evening lament, and "Just in Time" are the Jule Styne standards from the score. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Small Stage Musical Fans Only........2007-04-14

This is a wonderful movie for those of us who love musicals, Dean Martin, or Judy Holliday. It is not as cinematically filmed as it might have been. This is probably due to the fact that the play writers wrote the screen play. So the whole thing is cut like you are whatching the stage production. But the performance of Judy is incredibly charming, and who can resist the mellow tones of Dean's crooning.

Throw away your mobile phones. Smash your answering machines. Turn back your clock to 1960 when Suesanswerphone makes a pitch to improve all aspects of your life by preventing you from missing a phone call. An office full of Ella Peterson (Judy Holliday) voices filters incoming calls and forwards subscriber messages. Ella offers a unique personality for each client, making the establishment sound much grander than it is. Despite instructions to the contrary from her boss, cousin Sue (Jean Stapleton), but to the delight of subscribers, Ella goes beyond phone answering; she becomes a confidant and advisor.

A typical disaster on blind dates, Ella falls in love with the "disembodied voice" and circumstance of "Plaza-0 Double-4 Double-3" -- playwrite subscriber Jeffery Moss (Dean Martin) with whom she speaks in the voice of an elderly mother. "What a perfect relationship; I can't see him and he can't see me!"

Sue is swooned into sharing her office with shady Titanic Records owner J. Otto Prantz (Eddie Foy, Jr.) while Suesanswerphone is being investigated under suspicion of providing lonely-hearts-club service. Inspector Barnes (Dort Clark) warns Susanswerphone personnel not to have personal conversations or arrange meetings with male callers. Aware of these restrictions, Ella's concern for clients soon transcends the switchboard as she goes undercover in a variety of voices and costumes to pass along helpful information affecting the careers of such as characters beatnik Blake Barton (Frank Gorshin).

Musicals are the best! Dean Martin and Judy Holliday, what a perfect pair! Its just a feel good movie...love it!

4 out of 5 stars A rare delight.......2006-12-25

Bells Are Ringing is one of the rarest of all MGM musicals these days, but it's not at all bad despite a strong air of theatricality, most notably in the awkwardly staged finale. It's easy to see the strong influence this must have had on Amelie as Judy Holliday's Susanswerphone operator meddles in the lives of her clients, transforming them all for the better. The police investigation and bookie subplots don't really work that well (and the song-writing dentist is surely far more irritating than he was ever intended to be), but Holliday tones down the ditziness for something more believable and genuinely likeable and Frank Gorshin's hilariously brilliant impersonation of Marlon Brando is worth the price of the DVD alone. Dean Martin seems strangely sidelined here, especially with Holliday getting all the best songs, but it's still delightful entertainment if a tad overlong.

A good widescreen transfer and deleted musical numbers round out a very decent package.

Amazon.com essential video

The original title of Living Out Loud was The Kiss, which also happens to be the title of one of the two Anton Chekhov stories the movie is loosely based on. (For those Russian lit mavens out there, the other story is "Misery.") The actual kiss in Living Out Loud is a somewhat mysterious affair: newly single Judith (Holly Hunter) suddenly finds herself laying a wet 'n' sloppy one on a total stranger (Elias Koteas, Hunter's Crash costar) in the back room of a cool jazz club, and then parting ways with the man. For good. Like so much of this exceptionally smart, generous movie, no explanation is given--or necessary. Screenwriter Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King), making his directing debut, charts Judith's struggles in the wake of being dumped by her doctor husband (Martin Donovan). It turns out life has its ups and downs, some of which come courtesy of the elevator operator (Danny DeVito) in her swanky Upper East Side apartment building. DeVito's character is a nice guy in need of a little human touch, and the actor soft-pedals his usual sleaze in favor of a warm, directly emotional approach. It's the kind of turn that garners Oscar nominations, except that this movie didn't attract the box office it deserved. His performance, like the film, keeps surprising you--a fantasy sequence here, an ensemble dance there, plus a couple of smoky jazz tunes contributed by Queen Latifah. This unpredictable movie has the kiss of class. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Underated.......2007-05-12

I found this movie to witty and ironic. I loved Holly Hunters role and she had great support from Danny Devito and Queen Latifah. There was so much of it that I related to. Who wouldn't want to throw muffins at their EX LOL!

5 out of 5 stars What a gem.......2007-04-02

This is a great film with a knockout soundtrack. I could go on about the standout performances of Holly Hunter, Danny DeVito and Queen Latiffa, but you should discover them for yourself. And then get the soundtrack to see what happens when the Queen tackles jazz! A classic.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky and Often Heartfelt Look at a Manhattan Divorcee's Survival Tactics.......2006-12-31

Screenwriter Richard LaGravenese was able to make something substantive from the hoary novella that was Robert James Waller's "The Bridges of Madison County" aided by Clint Eastwood's assured direction. In his own directorial debut, LaGravenese again shows dexterity with unexpected character development in this self-penned 1998 dramedy. On the surface, the plot is straightforward. Judith, a wealthy, middle-aged Manhattan woman, is reeling from a divorce from her smug doctor husband for whom she gave up her own promising medical career to become a nurse. Pat, the doorman in her building, is also suffering from a bad marriage, has increasing gambling debts, and just lost his daughter. After months of indifference, they finally speak to each other, and he becomes smitten even though she only wants to be friends. Providing sharp, unpredictable dialogue, LaGravenese does not rely on clichés to formulate the characters, and it's the quirky sense of revelation he provides to Judith and Pat that keeps the story consistently engaging. He also effectively inserts fantasy scenes to reflect Judith's wavering state of mind - a technique I haven't seen used as well since Irvin Kershner's "Up the Sandbox" a quarter century earlier.

Casting helps considerably as Holly Hunter and Danny DeVito play Judith and Pat with consummate skill and poignancy. Looking taut, often apoplectic and sometimes quite sexy, Hunter makes Judith a refreshingly multi-dimensional figure, a wounded bird one minute and a cutting harpy the next. I particularly like her curt response to her ex-husband's conciliatory new wife, as well as the effortlessly seductive dance moves she exhibits at a lesbian nightclub. In a surprising display of warmth, DeVito makes Pat a sympathetic character without resorting to either self-pity or smarminess. Vocalizing in a confident, languorous manner, Queen Latifah gives a nicely assured performance as Liz, a nightclub jazz singer with whom Judith bonds. The 1999 DVD includes a thoughtful commentary track from LaGravenese, a strong extra in itself, though it seems a shame in hindsight that they were not able to secure the principal actors to participate. In addition to the original theatrical trailer, there are also five deleted scenes including Queen Latifah's full performance of the standard "Lush Life".

5 out of 5 stars I didn't know Queen Latifah could sing.......2006-05-12

She is terrific, what a voice. She should do a nice jazzy type album. I really liked this movie. Holly and DeVito are always good. Of course DeVito can really bring out the pathos in his character. But, Queen keeps getting better and better. I hope to see her in more of these types of movies.

5 out of 5 stars Great flick!.......2005-09-20

This movie did not get the audience it deserved. Holly Hunter shines like never before. Danny DeVito is a pleasant surprise as the guy who finally gets it right and Queen Lahtifa's role and her singing are magical. Do not miss this movie, the jazzy/blues mix of music alone is worth it.

It comes from Hollywood's era of grown-up "topic" movies, but Kings Go Forth has not left much of a trail. Two GIs, stationed near the French Riviera toward the end of World War II, compete for the love of a local girl (Natalie Wood). Her secret: Her father was black. The guys are Frank Sinatra, in his lost and lonely key, and Tony Curtis, as a spoiled kid breezing by on his looks (this was the same year Curtis did The Defiant Ones, also on race). Director Delmer Daves was very good at this kind of melancholy melodrama (see also A Summer Place), but this movie's non-reputation is easy to understand; it's mild and sentimental at its core. The only character that doesn't seem to be Representing Something is Sinatra's tender portrait of a soldier at loose ends, a far cry from his nervy Maggio in From Here to Eternity. --Robert Horton

Description

Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood star in this searing war drama that packs plenty of explosive excitement and fervent passion. Directed by Delmer Daves (The Badlanders) from Joe David Brown's gripping postwar novel (screenplay by Merle Miller), Kings Go Forth weaves elements of romance, war and miscegenation into a powerful, compelling and riveting film. In WWII France, Corporal Britt Harris (Curtis) is assigned to work alongside war-weary Sgt. Loggins (Sinatra)a man he soon rivals for the affections of the beautiful Monique Blair (Wood), an American who grew up in France. But when the men learn that Monique's parents are racially mixed, it tests the character of each...and provides the powerful thematic framework that shapes Kings Go Forth into a hard-hitting and still timely film.

3 out of 5 stars Forgetable War Drama with a Great Cast.......2007-04-30

Frank Sinatra nad Tony Curtis star as two GI friends who both love a young french girl played by Natalie Wood (who keeps loosing her accent during different scenes). The the three of them cast in this forgetable film is worth three stars by itself

Sinatra seem too old to play Wood's love interest. Curis seem too perfect in this role as the blues playing GI in the thick of war.... and Wood-see last paragraph

The world war two melodrama is soapy at best. AS I said before, there are very few suprises in this film, except for the acting of Sinatra and Curtis who outshine the script

Foe Sinatra and Curtis fans only!

Sinatra , Curtis and Natalie Wood put out
a great performance. Romance and action.

4 out of 5 stars No kings and so forth........2007-01-04

This is one of the lesser known Natalie Wood films but she is always a pleasure to watch. The story line attempts to handle one of the major prejudices of the time against a WWII background but stumbles a little. If you want to see a good war movie this is not it. Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis carried their roles very well except they were not very kingly. The picture quality of the film is very good. All in all this is a good film if your looking for a little drama rather than an action movie.

3 out of 5 stars Alright story of 'forbidden' love.......2006-06-05

Do you REALLY want to watch "The most challenging love story of our time?" I asked myself that after watching the trailer for KINGS GO FORTH. It's the price I pay for watching the trailers before the movie. Figure they'll give me a hint about what the movie's makers wanted us to think about the movie, give me a clue about their motives.

There were a bunch of reasons for popping the dvd out of the player then and there. KINGS GO FORTH was directed by Delmer Daves, who was in free-fall career decline in 1958, the year the movie was released. One of the factors contributing to the decline was his growing tendency to be late to the game on the big trends - KGF is about a forbidden love, and it's forbidden because the woman involved had a black father. If this had been made a decade earlier, back when movies like `Gentleman's Agreement,' `Pinky,' and `Cross-Fire' were breaking the ground on racial prejudice it would be different. By '58 it was a relatively safe topic, and, fair or not, that makes a big difference.

Also adding to the `you don't want to watch this' feeling was the cast. You can argue, and probably convince me, that Frank Sinatra was the greatest singer ever pressed on vinyl. Different story when you talk about his acting, though. Great in `From Here To Eternity,' intolerable in `Tony Rome.' Sinatra's two co-stars, Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis, weren't any more promising. Worst of all the movie took its title from the Bible. As a general rule movies that take their names from the Bible take themselves very seriously, and want their audience to do the same. So you've got a `hot' topic that was topical a decade earlier, a sense of righteousness that usually makes social-conscious movies a drag, and a trio of less than sure-fire stars.

With all that stacked against it, I'm happy to say I thought this movie was okay. Sinatra is in Maggio mode here, the odd-man out in a love triangle he shares with Wood and Curtis. Sinatra and Curtis are in the same army unit in the picturesque south of France, fighting the Germans during the week, pitching woo at Wood during the weekend. The last act resolves a crisis in the love triangle and introduces a plan by Lt. Sinatra to break the stalemate between the U.S. and German forces, both of which are groaningly predictable. Wood's character is a little too perfect, a little too saintly and innocent to be convincing, but she does the best that could be expected with the role. Curtis, as the charming rogue who cuts in on and supplants Sinatra, is okay. KINGS GO FORTH isn't quite as daring a statement it believes itself to be, but it's solid enough entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars one of frankie's best!.......2005-05-28

I am an all time lover of Frank's. This movie is one of his best i must say. It is one of his movies that came from a book. Frank, Natalie Wood, and Tony Curtis are all in this dramatic movie with a lot of interesting turns. Look into this movie it is a great one.

In the tradition of Slacker and Swingers, Late Night Shopping;is a quirky, offbeat comedy, in which four friends who work the graveyard shift at dead-end jobs spend their evenings at the local café. Vincent has an eye for the ladies, while Sean and Lenny are both searching for love in all the wrong places, and Jody is stuck on an assembly line. Stuck in a twilight world, going nowhere fast, the four friends suddenly find they have more in common than they might expect, and embark on a journey that just might change their lives.

      5 out of 5 stars Enjoy =).......2005-03-16

I watched "Late Night Shopping" one night, then put it on the next night, and the next. Ridiculous plot lines and endearing characters make for quite a funny film. I love the idea that you could be living with someone and never see them. I love the questions posed (which happen to be quite pertinent to twenty-somethings, or anyone working a dead-end job): "And then what?" "So, what now?" Well, if you don't know the answer to those questions, you can at least put on this film and have a laugh. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Late Night Shopping is a Pleasant Surprise.......2005-02-23

"Late Night Shopping" is done in the style of movies such as "Swingers," "Clerk's," and other sorts of generally chatty films, except these people have great British accents. However, there is most certainly a plot, and a charming one at that. The scenes in the film all connect somehow, bringing together the lives of the characters in a very fun, and smooth, way. The four main characters are friends who initially bonded over the fact that they all work graveyard shifts at thankless jobs. However, a deep friendship has blossomed between the four, which is even more evident by the end of the film. One of the characters, Sean, is trying to save his relationship with his girlfriend -- a storyline that ends up entangling the entire group. The film is funny, bright and delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed "Late Night Shopping," and I recommend it highly.

This may not be a great film as many reviews suggest. But like the charectors in the film it is a good company. a warm and charming film that touches your heart and lingers in your mind long after you have seen. in my case it has been more than two years when i saw the film in a european film festival in India. And i have been wanting to watch the film for long.thankfully i can now watch it again on dvd. i recommened this film strongly especially for some of those lonely nights that dont seems to end. happy viewing.

      5 out of 5 stars The ultimate 4am Movie.......2004-10-18

I saw this movie on SPN in the early days of cable and loved it. Fortunately I taped it. That and a couple cheapo video outlets' copies have had to satisfy me for over twenty years. I recently transfered the best of my copies to DVD, but will be purchasing this version based on the above review, also knowing that Alpha's prints are about as good as it gets, considering the source material.
If you've been up long hours with too much coffee, watch this flick. You'll enjoy this seedy little tale. This film alone made me a Harry Carey fan. The other reviewer did an excellent job detailing the performances, so I won't repeat. Great Movie! Knew Alpha would get around to it eventually!

3 out of 5 stars The finger of guilt pointed at her!.......2004-07-27

After witnessing a murder, beautiful showgirl Della Mason (Judith Allen) smuggles herself aboard woman-hating Capt. Josiah Storm's (Harry Carey) South Seas tramp steamer. Young radio operator Jim (Milburn Stone) falls instantly for the young beauty, who the authorities believe, wrongly, was an accomplice to the murder. For her protection, the ship takes her to a port where young woman in trouble can 'disappear.'
I liked PORT OF MISSING GIRLS just enough to give it three stars. Judith Allen had a decent singing voice (she has three numbers in this one) and had a broad-shouldered beauty reminiscent of a young Joan Crawford. My trusty old copy of The Film Encyclopedia has this to say about Ms. Allen: "A former model and stage player, she was heralded by Cecil B. DeMille as his new star discovery for THIS DAY AND AGE. But her subsequent roles did not justify the publicity and she finally wound up playing in cheap melodramas and Westerns." 'Finally' came a little quickly to Judith Allen's career. The cheap melodrama PORT OF MISSING GIRLS was made just five short years after THIS DAY AND AGE, and her career stepped off the cliff soon after.
The veteran character actor Harry Carey brings a calm, unaffected authority to his role as the woman-hating captain. It's an odd little treat to see Gunsmoke's musty old Doc, Milburn Stone, play Allen's smooth-faced love interest.
Based on this movie, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that director Karl Brown's nickname was "One Shot." There's a distracting handful of instances when the actors trip over their lines and give a bad reading. Furthermore, it's apparent that one stationary camera was used to shot this movie. Another distraction is when the camera angle is changed in the middle of a scene and continuity is broken when the actors and props aren't quite in the same location they were a split second ago. A competent director is able to overcome tight shooting schedules and tight budgets.
Brown also wrote the screenplay, and has jammed this movie with cliched secondary characters. The ship's crew consists of a toothless old gump, an eye-popping African-American cook, and an oh-la-la'ly lustful stripe shirted Frenchman. When the ship reaches port Brown throws in a slick-haired, pencil-moustached Latin lover. The port also contains a Mr. Wong-ish silk robed Chinese general. These characters may have passed when this movie was made, but modern viewers will find them unintentionally funny or downright offensive.
If you like old melodramas, PORT OF MISSING GIRLS delivers. Its strengths include Carey's understated presence and the chance to see one of Hollywood's countless young starlets whose career flamed out before they reached their thirtieth birthday. For a public domain film transferred directly to dvd, the print and sound quality are quite acceptable.
