Description

The feature-length widescreen Director's Cut of the Discovery Channel special - executive produced by James Cameron. In 1980, a bulldozer accidentally uncovered a first-century tomb in Jerusalem. Of the ten ossuaries (stone coffins) found inside, six bore inscriptions: Jesus son of Joseph, Maria, Mariamene (the name by which Mary Magdalene was known), Joseph, Matthew, and Judah son of Jesus. Dismissed by archaeologists as coincidence, the ossuaries were warehoused and forgotten. Twenty-five years later, filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and his team took a fresh look at this astounding cluster of New Testament names. Granted unparalleled access, they went in search of the ossuaries…and the lost tomb. What they found may well be the most controversial archaeological discovery of all time.

Features 80 minutes of exclusive bonus materials including:
Interviews with executive producer James Cameron and director Simcha Jacobovici
Expert Interviews: The Discovery 1980, Judeo Christians, The Early Christian Cluster of Evidence, The Sign of the Cross, The Chevron Symbol, Mariamne

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing!.......2007-06-13

I watched this with an open mind and I give it 4 stars because I wish it couldve been longer:) You are taught at a young age, the biblical history and then things like this come up. Could this be? Is this true? How come we havent seen this on the news? Is it a cover up or is this another charade? Are we skeptic or just blind? Watch this to see for yourself. You might tell yourself its just another documentary or it might make your internal light flicker to search out for the real truth. It is a very well done documentary and I hope there will be part 2!

5 out of 5 stars Great documentary.......2007-06-12

By the title of this film, one expects controversy, so I should start of by saying that I am not devoutly religious in any way shape or form. I never went to Sunday school, am not an expert in the Bible or in the history of the world around the time of Christ. I watched this DVD purely out of interest, and I came away very impressed with it.

This movie examines the contents of a tomb accidentally discovered in Jerusalem in 1980 by construction workers. Inside the tomb were 10 ossuaries, and six of them were inscribed with names, supposedly, from Jesus Christ's family. They include Maria (Virgin Mary), Jesus son of Joseph (Jesus Christ), Mariamne (Mary Magdelene), Matthew (brother of Jesus), Jose (another brother of Jesus), and Judah (son of Jesus). Yes, that's right, this movie hints that Jesus and Mary Magdelene had a son named Judah. The movie takes pains to show how these names were read, and interpreted to correlate with names from the Bible. The movie also shows how the relationship between some of the names changes depending on which part of the Bible one is reading. Most importantly, the movie provides arguments as to why its conclusions are not supported by mainstream Western theology; i.e. why Mary Magdelene could have been Jesus's wife, yet she is never mentioned as such in the Bible.

External sources are cited, such as ancient literary works. The movie is told like a detective story, with the filmaker leading the way as principle investigator. Many of the clues are found real time with the camera taping it the entire time. The movie follows scientists as they examine evidence such as sediments on the ossuaries, ancient texts, maps and drawings, etc... The movie even has a professional statistician go through the odds of another family at that time having the same set of names and being buried together. The point of the movie is that we, humans, have found the tomb of Jesus Christ and his family members, and that he had fathered a son with Mary Magdalene.

The movie and the special features include interviews with many Biblical experts, archaelogists, forensic experts, historians, linguists, and even religious officials from multiple countries and institutions. All are given lots of time to voice their doubts, opinions, and biases as to the evidence and the conclusions.

There are several questions that the movie does not address, and should have in order to improve its believability. First, what about the other ossuaries? Ten were found in the tomb, but only six are examined as part of this movie. Second, this viewer assumes that bones were found in all 10 ossuaries. Why was DNA evidence not extracted from all 10? Third, the movie producers should have tried and dated the age of death for all 10 skeletons, and see if these ages corresponded to what is in the Bible. Fourth and last, the movie, or one of the extra features, should have spent some time showing how the tomb was dated to about 0 (Zero) AD. But even with these drawbacks, this was a great movie. I consider it as one of the best documentaries to have been released this decade. The narration is great, the interviews seem frank, engaging and unscripted, the facts presented are convincing, and the pacing of the movie was perfect. Facts were presented like a well-crafted lawyer's argument. Overall, I highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great film based on very credible evidence!!.......2007-05-25

The people associated with this film and project have certainly given us new material to consider recently!! This is such a good, professionally done film with beautiful scenes and views of Jerusalem, the southern Talpiot hills, etc. What a wonderful 'travelogue'!! Gives you a good idea of past and present there. Makes you see that these people really lived then, and the film gives a clear presentation of all the archeological evidence as it has been analyzed so far. And coming from guys who have researched major archeological and crime-scene sites in the recent past, this is just exceptional. That people of their calibre would spend so much time and energy to try to bring us all the possible stories of truth in this matter, and not bury it in some dusty warehouse, is just a great testament to their faith and courage that the truth can triumph. Keep up the good work, guys!!! We have just one Question: did anyone in 1980 possibly look at the heel bones of the "Jesus, son of Joseph" ossuary before giving them up to the Jewish authorities for reburial????? we just cannot imagine that they would be so disinterested that they would let that examination pass by??. . . maybe someone did, and that's being covered up???? That info would surely change the statistical analysis!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Lost tomb Of Jesus.......2007-05-25

The work of an archeologist is to uncover the past. The work of a forensic investigator is to establish identity and causes of death when earthly remains are present..Given a name and a place and scientific testing and the results establish facts that cannot be altered.Science is truthful and religions, myths and legends can decieve.
A cluster of names matching the New Testament family of Jesus(Yeshua---Hebrew Form of his name)in a tomb containing ten ossuaries with six names etched on them including the name of Jesus-son of Joseph dating two thousand years ago and the right location for an extended family tomb containing family members from several generations would conclude and prove this find.
I enjoyed the movie as much as I enjoyed reading the book.I recommend the film viewing to anyone who is interested in Bible Archeology. But beware that it can change your view point about the origins of the Christian religion and the fact that there was no physical ressurection--just a spiritual one.Sad but true.I give the movie a five star rating for education, presentation and enlghtenment.Thank you for this great production. The book THE JESUS FAMILY TOMB is an eye-opening read enjoy both.I'm proud to include the book and the movie in my library collection.I'll be able to enjoy them for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2007-05-13

1. Saw this twice just so I get the message straight.

2. No scholars or archaeologists support this, including non-Christian, secular academics. That is REALLY REALLY bad. And no, Dr. Tabor, author of the Jesus Dynasty, doesn't count. (He says Jesus' father was a Roman soldier. See the credibility problems?)

3. No marriage connection at all. Dr. Bovon, the scholar they improperly used (search for his protest letter online), says this conclusion is "science fiction".

4. Tomb could have been 1st century BC - 3rd century AD. That's over 7 generations worth of possibilities. But somehow they are all *immediately* related? Sad assumption.

Don't waste your time or money.

4 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT ROCKED THE NATION.......2007-07-01

As a genealogist, I collect period movies. This is one of the first movies I ordered. This story is only one of many stories that occurred during the slavery peiod in this country. Because it was Thomas Jefferson - that made it big history. There were several slave owners who not only bed their slaves, some fell in love with them. The acting is excellent and the movie is very relevant. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Unbelievably Awesome!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-20

I ordered this movie and it came within a just a week. I love it. I culd watch it over and over again becuz i've been searching everywhere 4 this movie dying 2 c it again; I remember the movie from when it came on CBS back in '99 or 'oo. Tina Andrews did her research well and I love the way Sally Hemings was protrayed in the film. She's beautiful (thanks to Carmen Ejogo) and intelligent as well as feirce and kind at the same time. She's quite confident of herself. I also liked the way Jefferson was portrayed. It's almost completely believable to me-it's nice 2 hav an imagination. The other acters like, Diahann C., Mario V.P., Mare W., Amelia H., and Klea S. are great as well. I wish it culd hav gone into detail about her mother's, Betty, life and her Sally's two youngest sons, Eston and Madison. If you're interested in good entertainment of or the scandal of the U.s. 3rd president, you shuld seriously consider viewing this movie. I really like it and I am sooo glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Hemings: Excellent Story Told of Love, Betrayal and Oppression.......2007-03-08

This movie was excellent. It was much better than the version that came out in the early '90's. If you love period films than you will definitely love this historical piece. This is the perfect example of people caught between privilege and oppression. Excellent!!!

1 out of 5 stars Godawful.......2007-02-27

Just terrible. Makes claims that not even the most ardent Sally Hemings promoter believes. Turns Sally's brother James into some sort of martyr to the cause of political correctness. Has Jefferson (atrociously played by the completely out-of-place Sam Neill) traipsing around with Sally Hemings in public in a completely unrealistic way. Given the almost certain fact that Jefferson really did have children with Sally Hemings, this premise might have made an interesting and insightful movie. Instead, the producers used it as an excuse for creating a complete historical romance fantasy that tries at the same time to be titillating and preachy, and maybe it succeeds--but at the cost of any degree of historical accuracy. If you want a movie about Jefferson, get the much less awful Jefferson in Paris, which at least has beautiful production values and nice music.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT LOVE STORY!!!.......2007-01-09

I bought this dvd as a gift for my mother and she loves this movie. If you love romantic love stories, this is a good buy to witness a great love affair that happened between President Jefferson and Sally Hemings. I have seen this movie more than once; and everytime it is a joy to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the racists reviewing Spencer Wells' research!.......2007-06-13

After more than three years of watching and rewatching Spencer Wells' careful production, discussing it in graduate classes and with friends and relatives both qualified and unqualified, I was shocked to read racist reviews of Journey of Man in Amazon. We are all so closely related that any African child can grow up to be a typical American if brought here, and any American child can learn the skills needed to become a competent African citizen in the same amount of time. Spencer Wells has shown that we are all very much alike and separated from one another by less than 50,000 years, and of that fact we should be not only confident but proud. No racist can take that away from any of us.

1 out of 5 stars race and genetics.......2007-04-21

I found the presentation overly simplistic of the scientific principles and overly dismissive of the religious principles involved.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, inspiring........2007-03-26

Spencer Wells is an engaging and charming host for this fascinating perusal of the history of our species that is written in our DNA. He touches on many topics of great significance during the course of the documentary, including the nature of race and the roles of myth and science in human cultures. In spite of this, the documentary is entertaining and never difficult. The companion book is worth buying for more insight into the scientific and historical context in which the search for human prehistory has occurred.

The cinematography is beautiful, there is real humanity in the interviews and Wells' easygoing, self-deprecating style belies the intellectual firepower he must be packing in order to have worked with such giants as Lewontin and Cavalli-Sforza.

5 out of 5 stars Journey of Man, Spencer Wells.......2007-01-10

I saw this on PBS and was so impressed with this documentary that I immediately ordered it. I've shared this with family members, and we've all examined our views about "self" and our place in the Family of Man. I especially appreciated that not only did he include genetic information, but geography and archeology and sociology in his study about the Journey of Man. A superior work. I think it should be shown in schools. Maybe it would allow children to see us all as one family and stop violence against each other.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing story!.......2007-01-04

I loved this documentary. The link between gene markers and human migration was just incredible. It made the science behind the story very clear. It is a fascinating film that my students are going to enjoy greatly!

The work of geneticists who have labored for years to map human DNA is the subject of this offbeat yet highly informative documentary from the PBS series Nova. Host Robert Krulwich, a correspondent for ABC Nightline, visits with scientists who explain, in terms understandable to laymen, the enormous challenges faced and overcome by scientists working on the Human Genome Project. The value of the research effort is underscored with visits to families affected by inherited diseases that could someday be eradicated, and even legal matters such as research patents and potential privacy issues are also covered intelligently. The race between government researchers and private biotech firms is detailed, and at appropriate times host Krulwich is able to inject some good-natured humor into this excellent documentary. --Robert J. McNamara

Description

Does it amaze you that yeast is your very close relative? That you possess roughly the same number of genes as a mouse? That you are 99.9% genetically identical to every other human? ABC Nightline correspondent Robert Krulwich lends a lighthearted touch to genetic science in this provocative two-hour NOVA special that takes you inside the amazing, complex and contentious race to decode the human genome.

The Human Genome Project was born in 1990, when an international consortium of labs set out to sequence all 3 billion letters of our DNA, predicting they'd finish by 2005. Halfway through their schedule, controversial scientist and entrepreneur J. Craig Venter threw the genome world into turmoil, when he announced his for-profit company Celera could finish the job in just two years. Francis Collins, leader of the publicly-funded effort, and MIT's Eric Lander were among the scientists who answered Venter's challenge. The result made history and laid the foundation for a remarkable future.

Armed with this powerful information, medical pioneers are in the midst of astonishing breakthroughs that will change medicine as we know it. Will you get cancer, arthritis, or Alzheimer's? The answer lies in your genetic code—but the question is: Do you want to know? And will these new discoveries eventually lead to cures?

This is an exceptional documentary about the mapping of the human genome and its implications for humanity. Well structured and presented in laymens terms, helps to make Cracking the Code of Life an important addition to understanding Evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-02-07

I am a high school Biology teacher and every year I show this film to my students as an introduction to our study on Genetics and Heredity. This is a great film that illustrates how the Human Genome Project began and examines the potential ethical dilemmas as well as potential benefits the completion of this project may have for society. Rarely can I show a "science" film and have so many students afterwards agree that it really was fascinating. In fact given its 2 hour length we can't finish it in one sitting and they beg me each day "Can we finish that movie today?" This movie stimulates some fascinating conversations in my classroom, and as a teacher, who could ask for more?

2 out of 5 stars Very simple.......2007-01-05

Very simple. I expected a better contribution in the field of science per se; and i found that is oriented to ethics. Regards, Madya Ayala

i showed it to my students and it was a hit. all but one thought that it was great. that one said, "it's not true because the bible doesn't say any of that." well, forget him and focus on the genetics and the travels of the people. this is a great addition to "The Journey of Man", another wonderful genetic tracing of our species but looking at it through the male. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in our true beginnings.

3 out of 5 stars Should be 30 minutes shorter........2007-03-14

The idea is good. The science is important.

The film is slow and self-indulgent.

Constant, useless "dramatizations" interrupt the flow of the film and confuse the science. The script Danny Glover is working from begs for shortening. It would have been interesting to see the Y-chromosome studies compared and to have more time with Dr. Oppenheimer. Disappointing. If the subject nmatter wasn't so compelling, I'd have docked it another star.

Recommended only for those who are unfamiliar with the "Mitochondrial Eve" story. Others will probably be bored.

4 out of 5 stars Important Information - Pooly Communicated.......2006-12-04

This film conveys an important bit of information, however I had to watch the film quite a few times to fully grasp it. It traces the genetic path back 150,000 years ago to a single woman. However, it is not the HUMAN DNA that is traced, but rather the DNA of the mitochondia that live in our cells. The film never explains what mitochondia are, much less anything about the genetic markers. Frustrating. The film also suggests that humans left Africa through a SOUTHERN route rather than a northern one. However every time they mentioned this, they showed an unmarked map with an arrow pointed NORTHWARD. Frustrating. I would have given it 5 stars because I was so grateful to learn these things, but since I had to constantly repeat sections and consult an atlas and biology text, I give it 4 stars.

The basic thesis is fascinating and very convincing; and not only because, in its broadest outline, actually very simple. With more data the story will surely become more complicated and perhaps less susceptible to documentary treatment. This is why I found 'The Real Eve' something of a disappointment.

Perhaps on the assumption that the audience would not be able to follow the science, we are treated to a very extended infomercial complete with gravel voiced commentary, kaleidoscopic special effects and rather corny dramatic reconstructions of fatal confrontations between rival stone-age humans. But this is an idea which doesn't need to be 'sold', just explained; and a lay audience doesn't need to be beguiled, merely informed.

Read the book: in 'The Real Eve: Modern Man's Journey Out of Africa' (published in the UK as 'Out of Eden'), Stephen Oppenheimer tells the same basic story with much greater clarity much more convincingly.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Eve is real incredible.......2006-03-10

This documentary is one of the best produced documentaries I've ever seen. Not only is it facinating and incredibly researched, but the music in it elevates the subject matter to profound levels.

If Species 3 lacks the star power of its previous incarnations - mostly notably Natasha Henstridge, whose participation here is relegated to a cameo - the movie succeeds in delivering lean, mean B-movie thrills by paring down the franchise's premise to its most exploitable elements - copious nudity and gore. Henstridge's voracious alien/human hybrid Eve dies gruesomely in the film's opening moments, but not before giving birth to an infant, who is rescued by a college professor (Robert Knepper) and grows into the pulchritudinous form of Sunny Mabrey. Unfortunately, she proves to be her mother's daughter in every way by setting out to mate with--and kill--any male unlucky enough to cross her path. While a definite step down in terms of plot and performance quality, Species 3 has glimpses of atmosphere and suspense in addition to the blood and skin shows, and makes good use of H.R. Giger's unsettlingly sensuous creature design, which should please franchise fans, gore hounds, and omnivorous sci-fi viewers. --Paul Gaita

species 3 is the best in the series. sexy and exciting and with a great story. cant wait for number 4.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2006-09-08

This is the best of the trilogy. I believe this is a straight to video release but it is better than the usual of its ilk. The main reason being Ameilia Cooke's gas station scene.....

2 out of 5 stars Just not very interesting.......2006-05-20

So this time we've got a new alien, played by Sunny Mabrey. She's being raised by a college professor who spirited her away from the government just after the end of the last movie. But there are also half-breed aliens, and they want to mate with her because their genes are all screwed up and they're dying from a whole host of diseases. When one of them shows up at the college professor's office and dies, he calls in help from a brilliant grad student. Soon, the alien starts to have "feelings" for this student, and the half-breed aliens attack.

This just wasn't terribly interesting, even for a direct-to-video movie. The story didn't have much forward momentum to it and the conclusion was fairly unsatisfying. The inclusion of the half-breed aliens didn't really serve any purpose except to put a stumbling block in front of the professor and his little science project. As far as the characters, the hot babe alien didn't have any emotions, so that pretty much wrote her out of the story. The professor and his student were just not very well developed and din't have any sort of personality traits that separated them from any other generic movie character. The whole thing left me uninterested. The worst part was there didn't seem to be any point to the story - what was the professor trying to do with the alien? This was never made clear, so when it wasn't successful, well, who cares?

Considering all the attention given to this being "unrated", it really didn't have any more gore or nudity than an average R rated movie.

3 out of 5 stars Let's Try It Again.......2005-11-29

First there was Sil. Then we had her duplicate Eve. Now we have Eve's daughter Sara. Sara is closer to alien than her predecessors and is the charge of a university professor. He is trying to analyze her DNA and create and even more perfect creation. We also have a number of Hybrids (although Sil, Eve and Sara are also hybrids) who have agendas of their own.

As Sara matures her need to breed kicks in but she is unique and needs another with her level of alieness. The professor takes on a student researcher to assist in his plans. Although it is easy to learn from past mistakes, it is not easy to predict new ones and things begin to get out of hand. Soon there are bodies to be hidden and aliens to deal with as well as the government once they manage to find out what is going on.

This one lacks the feeling and menace of the earlier films and is far more upbeat. It is a different story from the first two and there is no explanation for the proliferation of the hybrids. All in all it is not what one would look for if you wanted more of the same. While different in many ways there is still good alien action and plenty of nudity like the original. But if you want a development and not just a continuation, then you might really enjoy this one. With a young protagonist this one should appeal to a different audience.

5 out of 5 stars Best out of the 3, so far..........2005-10-26

I like this movie best out of the Species trilogy. It was well written and paced. This is also the best "college" movie I have seen as well - no cheese here. The movie has humorous takes on the general misunderstandings and misconceptions that exist between women and men, parents and teen-agers, teachers and students.

For good "alien" entertainment, watch this, so long as you don't mind some cheesy gross special effects...

Eddie Murphy's remake of The Nutty Professor used the good professor's alter ego, Buddy Love, in much the same way that Jerry Lewis did in his brilliant original: a representation of the id out of control that plays like an admission of the actor's off-screen sins. In the sequel, Murphy expands on his Klump family from the first film and makes them major characters. Consequently, his dark side has plenty more places to express itself, particularly through the oversexed grandmother, Sherman's aggressively impotent father, and his just plain surly uncle, as well as Buddy Love (all played by Murphy).

The movie opens with professor Sherman Klump barely holding onto his sanity as his internal Buddy Love makes him say inappropriate things. He decides to extract his mutant Buddy Love gene (a sort of genetic version of electroshock therapy), but afterward is unable to maintain his original personality and intelligence. Sherman is the most bland character of the bunch, and the audience gets stuck with his boring romance with fellow professor Janet Jackson, his struggle to be nice, and generic intrigue surrounding a Fountain of Youth formula he developed. When it's not trying too hard to be nice--heck, one character is anally raped by a giant hamster--the movie works. The moral of the story is that Sherman needs to reconnect with their inner Buddy Love. That goes for Murphy, too. --Andy Spletzer

5 out of 5 stars BIG LAUGHS.......2006-12-21

EDDIE IS SO HILARIOUS. HE IS THE ENTIRE FAMILY OF THE KLUMPS. SHERMAN FINDS TRUE LOVE WITH THE BADDEST CHIC. HIS ALTER EGO BUDDY LOVES SIMPLY TRIES TO SET HIM

5 out of 5 stars Talk about Alter Ego!.......2006-12-13

Eddie Murphy is back and strong! Not only does Eddie Murphy carry the multi-personality aspect well, he also adds a strange yet hilariously familiar warm-fuzzy to the film! Awe inspiring Richard Prior is another comedian that made the transition to film making rather smoothly. I've yet to view a Murphy film I didn't like and hope he makes many-many more.

5 out of 5 stars The last greatness of Eddie Murphy.......2006-08-13

I enjoyed both of the films and even though in a way it makes fun of fat people, It's a great movie. I actually liked this better than the first one for some reason. And wo doesn't like the part when grampa Klump farts and lights a curtain on fire (I think that was him anyway). After this film, Murphy's movie career was going downhill (and I mean way down there to a point that you don't slide, you just fall.) I'm sorry to say this but it is just true.

3 out of 5 stars A SHOWCASE FOR EDDIE MURPHY.......2005-12-31

THE NUTTY PROFESSOR II is basically a showcase for the considerable talents of Eddie Murphy. Murphy plays the entire Klump family and he's hilarious in the different characterizations, especially his doting mother and his rather vulgar grandmother. The makeup is astounding in hiding the real Murphy and he has a field day with all of them. As one reviewer noted, Sherman is the most boring of all the characters, and his romantic tryst with Janet Jackson (who is surprisingly good) tends to get in the way of the script's flow. While much of the humor is crude (e.g., the hamster's sexual assault on Dean Larry Miller), one can't help but laugh. There are sexual jokes, flatulence galore, and some hilarious sight gags. Certainly not a classic movie, but admittedly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars We don't care: we love these movies. Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps........2005-12-15

In your face: Nutty Professor 2 The Klumps RULES!!!!!! and Eddie Murphy is the best actor out since Redd Foxx. of Sanford and Son. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE FAMILY GETTING TOGETHER HAVIN A GOOD MEAL. Quote from THE NUTTY PROFESSOR. Sherman has invented a new product. a youth formula that reverses aging. but beware... For an innocent man exonerated by newly found DNA evidence, release from prison is only the beginning. Shattered lives aren't so quickly pieced back together with a wave of a judge's gavel. After Innocence, a moving and unforgettable documentary, follows the lives of several "exonerees" freed after years--sometimes decades--of wrongful imprisonment for rape or sexual assault. Some of the men have used the opportunity to truly start over--get degrees, forge a new career, rebuild family ties. Others remain broken and bewildered by a judicial system that let them down. And, as one of the exonerees notes, there's nothing in place to assist people wrongly convicted, while there are a host of benefits available to convicts who are out on parole. There are many touching moments in the film, especially showing how the exonerees have banded together in a loose support group; while nothing will ever be the same for any of these men, their recognition for what each other has been though is sometimes enough for them to feel that they can face another day. --A.T. Hurley

Description

After Innocence tells the dramatic and compelling story of the exonerated - innocent men wrongfully imprisoned for decades and then released after DNA evidence proved their innocence. Focusing on the gripping stories of seven men, including a police officer, an army sergeant and a young father that were sent to prison for decades - in some cases death row - for crimes they did not commit, After Innocence explores the emotional journeys these men face when thrust back into society with little or no support from the system that put them behind bars. While the public views exonerations as success stories - wrongs that have been righted - After Innocence shows that the human toll of wrongful imprisonment can last far longer than the sentences served, raising basic questions about human rights and society's moral obligation to the exonerated by placing a spotlight on the flaws in our criminal justice system that lead to wrongful conviction of the innocent.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Lopsided Documentary With Significant Information.......2007-02-22

A telling documentary about the failings of criminal investigative law in the U.S., AFTER INNOCENCE is a poignant, if somewhat stilted, telling of the lives of men who've been wrongfully imprisoned for years and years (sometimes decades and decades) only to be released after advances in DNA evidence free them.

The documentary follows only men through this process, most of them having been identified during their trial by a person who is wrong about them. Not really a surprise, as eyewitness identification is now being proven to be one of the least accurate ways in which to prosecute someone.

The film begins and ends with its focus on Wilton Dedge in Brevard County, Florida. Sentenced to life in prison for sexual battery and burglary, Dedge has steadfastly commented on his innocence since his imprisonment some 22 years earlier. Never having given up, Dedge has the physical evidence collected from his crime sent to a forensic lab for DNA study. By the end of the film, we learn that none of it matches Dedge and he is sure to be released. But the prosecutors from the District Attorney's office are reluctant to let him go. Why?

That's the biggest stickler in the entire film. Even when faced with overwhelming evidence of innocence, our supposed community service men and women are unwilling to admit their errors. That's very frustrating and shown quite well.

The problem with the documentary, though, is that it never really shows the "other side." In other words, the D.A.'s perspective. Perhaps the D.A.'s didn't want to be filmed. But we're never told either way. Only once do we ever see a prosecutor discussing DNA cases, and that is very short indeed. Thus, this gives the After Innocence a very lopsided/one-sided viewpoint. If the D.A.'s didn't want to be filmed, I would've liked to have seen the film-makers attempting to get in to see them only to be rebuked and booted out. Again, we don't know if this happened or if the film-makers ever tried to get the other side.

The other notable portion to the film is that prison affects these men very differently. Vincent Moto seems to have lost his willingness to better himself, while Herman Atkins now has a Ph.D in psychology. Dennis Maher and Nick Yarris seem to have mental health problems thanks to their long and wrongful imprisonment, each appearing either lackluster about life or having an inflated ego about their own importance rather than the importance of the situation itself.

Regardless, After Innocence is informative in its own, one-sided way. Just make sure you check out both sides before deciding on its entire significance.

5 out of 5 stars simply incredible.......2007-02-22

to put it simply, this film is a STUNNING jaw-dropper. it is by far one of the best films i have seen in decades, not because of great film-making techniques, but simply because of its incredibly powerful content. highly worth your time to see the how and why our (U.S.) justice system so consistently malfunctions and to see the wide swath of lives it ravages in the process.

but this is a truly hopeful film, as it shows many exonerees who, after being freed, have risen above the horrors of being imprisoned for 10, 20 years for committing no crime at all; and it shows many of those in the innocence project who make enormous sacrifices of time, effort, and money to save innocent people from the hell of unjust imprisonment and death.

5 out of 5 stars After Innocence, the Machinery that Manufactures Wrongful Convictions Still Operates.......2007-02-11

I saw this movie in a theater, when it debuted in Los Angeles. I estimate there were between 100 and 150 people in the audience. It would hardly be fair to say the event was a movie debut, without pointing out that the movie debut also appeared to be an event actively showcasing the cause of the wrongly convicted. The movie, in my opinion, was excellent and showed the lives of a number of men who had been wrongly convicted of crimes, most involving charges of rape. The men talked about:

# their lives before their convictions,

# what circumstances led to their convictions,

# what their lives were like in jail,

# their struggle to be freed by DNA evidence,

# what their lives were like after exoneration.

Many of the exonerated were struggling to receive compensation for their unjust treatment, and most were struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives after being devastated by the inhumanity of America's legal system. The callousness of the system appeared frequently, while apologies for errors were few and far between. It was difficult to sit through the movie without feeling anger toward the cruelty and injustice America's legal system brought into the lives of these men. It was apparent from the reactions of others in the audience I was not alone in my feelings.

The movie was edited so that it also included the struggles of Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld and others in the Innocence Project as they worked to free the wrongly convicted. At one point in the movie a volunteer showed bundle after bundle of letters (from prisoners), in filing cabinets that staff had not even had the resources to open yet. It was an appalling site, considering the perilous existence of some DNA evidence in "official" storage.

After the movie, the writer/director Jessica Sanders conducted a Q & A with the audience. Along with her, were about half a dozen of the wrongly convicted men, some of whom were in the movie. An attorney who had assisted in the project was also on stage. In response to an audience question, the attorney stated that it was his guess that between 1% and 5% of the current prison population was wrongly convicted. He went on to say, "That doesn't sound like much, but given that our present prison population is 2,000,000, that works out to between 20,000 and 100,000 human beings." Although it was never mentioned in the Q & A, or the movie, 93% of those incarcerated are male.

On the way out of the theater, we passed by tables that sold baseball caps, t-shirts, books, and CD's. The book that was on sale was entitled "Surviving Justice," and is also available through Amazon.com.

I paused momentarily at one of the tables, while my friend asked questions. In several subsequent discussions with audience members, and people at tables, I mentioned that I was a member of the National Coalition of Free Men Los Angeles, and said, "We encounter a lot of men who are 'falsely accused.' You know, the preliminary step leading to wrongful convictions."

In the lobby, my friend asked one of the attorneys in the group what culpability the government had for those wrongly convicted. He was told, "Unless it can be shown that the government was malicious, there is none." Perhaps the government hasn't learned yet that the American public is very angry about all the "witch hunting" of innocent men going on, but there is a growing effort underway to "educate" them of that fact.

I highly recommend the movie After Innocence for one and all. The stories of wrongly convicted men, who have regained their freedom, is a heroic effort worth knowing. The stories of wrongly convicted men, struggling to regain the shattered pieces of their lives, is an American tragedy worthy of every citizen's help and support to make right.
