Victor Erice's hauntingly beautiful The Spirit of the Beehive features one of the most unforgettable child performances in the history of cinema. Hailed as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s, Erice's visually elegant "poem of awakening" takes place in a small Castilian village in the early 1940s, as echoes of the Spanish Civil Wart can still be heard throughout the countryside. It is here, in this richly rural atmosphere, that six-year-old Ana (played by six-year-old Ana Torrent) is introduced to alternate world of myth and imagination when she attends a town-hall showing of James Whale's Frankenstein, an experience that forever alters young Ana's perception of the world around her... and her ability to mold reality to her own imaginative purposes. Is she using her imagination to escape what is essentially a bleak reality, or is she protecting herself with an inner world of innocence, to counter the darker worldview of her slightly older sister Isabel? While her emotionally distant parents go about their mundane daily affairs, Ana's world becomes the film's mesmerizing focus, and The Spirit of the Beehive unfolds as an enigmatic yet totally captivating study of childhood unfettered by the strictures of reason. In Erice's capable hands, young Ana Torrent really isn't performing at all; her presence on screen is so natural, and so deeply expressive, that you almost feel as if she's living in the story being told--a story that retains its mystery and beauty in equal measure, full of visual symbolism and metaphor (including the title, which yields multiple meanings), yet never self-consciously "arty" or artificial. Simply put, this is one of the timeless masterpieces of cinema, produced at a time when Franco's repressive dictatorship was finally giving way to greater freedoms of expression. No survey of international cinema is complete without at least one viewing of this uniquely moving film. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVDs
Disc 1 presents a new, restored high-definition digital transfer of The Spirit of the Beehive, with a new and improved English subtitle translation. The supplements on Disc 2 are thoroughly fascinating, beginning with "The Footprints of a Spirit," a very well-made documentary about the making of the film, combining present-day (2006) visits to the film's original locations along with interviews with director Victor Erice, producer Elías Querejeta, coscreenwriter Ángel Fernández Santos, and actress Ana Torrent (now a beautiful 40-year-old veteran of many Spanish films). "Victor Erice in Madrid" is an extensive and thought-provoking interview, conducted by Japanese filmmaker Hideyuki Miyaoka, in which Erice discusses his films, and specifically The Spirit of the Beehive, including his observation that the film's shot of young Ana Torrent watching Frankenstein for the first time (a real-life reaction filmed with documentary realism) represents "the most important moment I have ever captured on film." Two other 2006 interviews round out the supplements: One with the great Spanish actor Fernando Fernán Gómez (who describes how he "couldn't understand a word" of the Beehive screenplay, but played the role of Ana's father because he needed the work), and another with scholar Linda C. Ehrlich, who astutely discusses the film's visual qualities (including its warm color palette and the influence of Vermeer's paintings on Erice's sunlit interiors), the significance of Frankenstein to the story, and the qualities that made The Spirit of the Beehive both timely (in terms of its sociopolitical context) and timeless. The accompanying booklet contains an informative essay on the lasting influence of Erice's film, including the startling revelation that Erice (as of 2006) had directed only two more feature-length films (El Sur and the documentary Dream of Light) since The Spirit of the Beehive was released in 1973. --Jeff Shannon

Description

The Criterion Collection is proud to present Víctor Erice's spellbinding The Spirit of the Beehive, widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, directly following the country's devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes haunted by her memory of it. Produced as Franco's long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is both a bewitching portrait of a child's inner life and an elusive, cloaked meditation of a nation trapped under tyranny—from one of cinema's most mysterious auteurs.

5 out of 5 stars a pleasant surprise.......2007-01-16

criterion has the habit of completely delighting me from time to time (more often than not). 'spirit of the beehive' which was a kind of chance purchase for me paid off.. This ranks among the finest films i have recently seen - a rich evocation of childhood- and a fairy tale like homage to an older world.. and to well.. frankenstein. Sometimes, very rarely to be sure, we feel that we are so touched by something that it is almost on an unconcious level.. someone might, for example, experience this familiar yet unexplicable feeling from watching the wizard of oz or reading lewis carrol.. this is the sort of feeling i got from the spirit of the beehive.. at the risk of sounding too emotional in my reaction.

5 out of 5 stars Otherwordly, beatiful cinema.......2007-01-04

While I am not a cineaste nor a reviewer, I feel unable to refrain from passing on just how remarkable this film was. The stunning cinematography combines with a lovely, subtle tale with nicely crafted allusions to Spain's then-recent civil war and Fascist victory to form a (sadly obscure) masterpiece.

Victor Erice's depictions of childhood are also spot-on. I am very glad that I bought this movie on a whim, but then again, who ever expects to be disappointed by a Criterion release?

5 out of 5 stars Haunting & Unique.......2006-11-17

"The Spirit of the Beehive" is a film that was long considered one of (if not the) finest Spanish film. It's now presented in a gorgeous transfer by The Criterion Collection, which seems to only improve each year in quality and quantity. It's an odd film, that some call disturbing. It's not disturbing, at least to me, but it does have a few thought-provoking and haunting images occupying it. I think what Spirit of the Beehive does best is that it showcases truly one of the finest performances I've ever seen by an adolescent. A performance that ranks right up there with Jean-Pierre Leaud from The 400 Blows, although the child in that film and the child in this one are quite different. I don't know the young actresses name, but she's amazing. The movie's opening credits feature children's drawings, before giving us the title card "Once Upon a Time..." In a small Mexican village, the movie 'Frankenstein' is being shown and the entire town is enthralled by the movie. Two particular kids find the movie particularly good, two sisters named Ana and Isabel. During the movie Ana poses a question to Isabel, regarding one of the most famous scenes in the movie. Why did Frankenstein kill the girl? And why was Frankenstein, as a result, killed? Isabel doesn't know, so she instead tells Ana that the monster is not dead at all, but living in an abandoned farmhouse-type thing that sits in the middle of a field. Ana begins frequenting this place, believing that Frankenstein actually lives there...Who knows? Maybe she's right. A lot of people mention the overtones of war in the film and things like that, but whether you've caught those or not is irrelevant. The movie is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Some of the images in the film are bound to stay with you for days. I guess I should add that the "beehive" works into the title, because the girls' father works around beehives. Sorry about the chronology of the review, but anyway...The movie has some beautiful shots (one of the most haunting one is of Frankenstein and Ana, the other is the final shot of the film), a haunting musical score;
All of which are equally important in creating the mood and atmosphere of this film. Foreign film/Criterion Collection lovers. See this movie.

5 out of 5 stars a very fine Spanish film.......2006-10-23

This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

"The Spirit of the Beehive" released in Spain as "El Espíritu de la colmena" is about a Spanish village in the 1940's. Two children view the film Frankenstein at a movie theater in the village and become interested in the film. The younger child is convinced that that Frankenstein's monster is real and tries to find him.

This film has won many awards and is considered one of the best Spanish films ever made. The film has some very nice music including the tune of the Mexican children's song, "Don Gato" about a cat that dies and comes back to life.

The Criterion DVD is very nice and has some great special features.

Disc one contains the film.
Disc two contains a documentary about the film titled "The Footprints of a Spirit" and interviews with the film's director, Víctor Erice, actor Fernando Fernán Gómez, and film scholar Linda Ehrlich.

I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars CINEMATIC POETRY WITH THE WRONG ASPECT RATIO.......2006-10-09

I am Spanish and I do beleive this is one of the geatest films in the history of Spanish cinema. I won't repeat the reasons given by reviewers here and elsewhere. So I'll come to the point. I eagerly awaited the Criterion edition to give away my old DVD copy released in Spain by Manga films. After all Criterion has gained an oustanding reputation for the great care they take in their editions. Well, their transfer looks certainly better than the one in the Spanish release, everything bathed in a warm honey colour. A bit grainy at times, the grain may be present in the negative. But the aspect ratio looked wrong to me and when I compared it with my Spanish edition I realized the picture has been zoomed to fill as much as possible the widesreen, with unnecesary loss of picture information at the top and the bottom. I wonder why even Criterion is so afraid of having black bars at the left and right of the screen. It may seem a small point, but in a film like this one the whole frame should be respected. I can't imagine Erice approving this compromise. But even if he did, it was wrong. The framing looks much better in my old copy. Now I cannot give it away. And in my rating I must drop a star just for that. Shame.

The movie was very very good, but I wish it was longer. I also wish that it could ALL be true!

3 out of 5 stars TERMINALLY CUTE FAMILY FILM.......2006-05-12

This ultrasweet sequel to MIRACLE DOGS brings us two spaniels who have the miraculous ability to heal, and how they stumbled into a young boy's life. Adults may find it saccharine-heavy, but it is a good film for the family to enjoy together. A good cast consisting of Charles Durning, Janine Turner, Patrick Muldoon and an over the top Lesley Ann Warren bring some life to the pedestrian script, and all in all, should be entertaining as family viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Holding Back THE GOODS!.......2005-02-19

Purchased with the hope that Leon would bare all or mostly all throughout, he instead chooses to be a bit of a tease. There are however several excellent 'skin scenes.' Early on he turns away from his painting stool to reveal his 'accordian-like' abs to Regina King. She had probably already buried her face in them weeks before in a hotel room between shoots. 'Til this flick I wasn't aware that this boy's rear end was that plump or that his back resembled a railroad maze of mass muscle. When he squirmed back & forth in bed with the ghost, (Cynda Williams) the nooks & crannies seemed endless. When this 'most memorable scene' first unfolded, I remember thinking, "hold on for dear life pal- I'm comin' thru." Boy did I crave the opportunity to climb onboard myself, pinch the hell out of those gorgeous cheeks & conduct a MAJOR TASTE TEST from head to toe. Unfortunately this chocolate dude looks best when he's facing the camera sans shirt & the shots we do get in that category are all at a distance. Even the zoom fails here. While not thick & bulky in the upper chest, he's well cut & defined. That neatly compliments the aformentioned washboard abs. Williams pre-CAUGHT UP gives us plenty of flesh displays but even she begrudges us the pleasure of seeing her flat on her back fending off Leon's advances. Now that would've been HOT! Having caught Leon in other vehicles like LITTLE RICHARD & ABOVE THE RIM, he seems to bulk up only on occasion which is a pity 'cause when he sets his mind to it he can deliver DELICIOUS with the best of his fellow Hollywood brothas. Pass on this one- trust me this black cat's been beefier. We're getting shortchanged.

1 out of 5 stars Leon!!!.......2003-10-25

1 star for Leon...he is so hot! He has a great body and super hot rear end. And just to let you know I am a 19 year old straight guy!

2 out of 5 stars GREAT CONCEPT--A BLACK THRILLER/LOVE STORY.......2002-09-15

I LIKED THE CONCEPT OF THIS FILM. IT DEALS WITH THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. AFRICAN RELIGION AND AFRICAN AMERICAN SYMBOLISM, A LOVE TRIANGLE (A HUSBAND AND WIFE AND A GHOST. AND THE PAINTER/"VAN GOGH" MENTAL ILLNESS CONCEPT. LEON AND REGINA TAYLOR ARE GOOD IN THIS. ITS GOOD TO SEE REGINA TAYLOR PLAY A DIMENSIONAL CHARACTER. SHE'S ALWAYS PLAYING A STOIC ASEXUAL CHARCTER IN MOVIES. TOO BAD THE MOVIE DOESN'T GET INTO THE SUBPLOT OF THE SLAVE GIRL (CYNDA WILLIAMS)MARRYING HER SLAVEMASTER AND HER TRAGIC DEMISE AND TEH HOUSE THAT SHE HAUNTS THAT LEON AND REGINA BUYS.. EXCELLENT AND INTELLIGENT FILM. GREAT SCENERY. THE END OF FILM IS CHEAPENED WITH NO EXPLANATION OF LEON'S CONDITION AFTER HIS SPIRIT CAME BACK FROM HBEING POSESSED BY THE SLAVE GIRLS' (CYNDA)SEXUAL POSESSION OF HIM. THE SEX SCENE WITH LEON (WHO HAS A GREAT BODY!) AND TEH GHOST AND REGINA TAYLOR CATCHING HIM WAS HILARIOUS!

3 out of 5 stars Very Sexy.......2001-10-21

I have to admit, the reason I bought this movie is to see the stunning beauty Cynda Williams play the role as a sex crazed ghost. She has an unbelievably gorgeous body and I'm a fan for life. I guess the role didn't require her to have any lines. The movie was real slow and non-emotional. Leon is a good actor but its not much he can do with this script.

1 out of 5 stars Boring Film.......2001-07-10

I didn't like this movie because it was so boring. Nothing scary really happened. It wasn't even a bit violent. This movie belongs in the thriller section only, because it's not a horror movie whatsoever.

I kind of liked the acting. The beginning of the film is the kind of beginning that is put into a good horror movie. However this beginning tricks you. It seems like it is going to be a good horror flick, but turns out to be boring.

The ending was kind of pointless, too.

Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi is a juvenile delinquent in the making: crude, rude, and interested only in fighting, especially with his rival Kuwabara. When Yusuke is killed saving a little boy from a speeding car, he's given another chance by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the Spirit World. If Yusuke properly nurtures a "spirit egg," it will hatch into a benevolent beast that will help him return to his body; but too much negative energy will produce a monster that will devour him. Botan, the pretty pilot of the River Styx, and Koenma's agent Sayaka supervise Yusuke's clumsy attempts to communicate with Kuwabara and Kayko, the girl he secretly loved. His efforts invariably lead to fist fights, and the opening of this popular series plays like a cross between Dragon Ball Z and a minor Frank Capra movie. Rated 13 Up: Minor risqué humor, cartoon violence; alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars 4.7-4.9/5 (whole Series).......2005-10-18

Yu-Yu Hakusho... In early 2002, or so, I believe it was, maybe 2001, this show was aired on Adult Swim and Toonami, and though, they only showed 20 something episodes back then, they started showing up to the Dark Tournament sometime in 2004, I believe, maybe started mid 2003, but... Lol, my memory is fading, it seems. Anyway... I saw that they were releasing the Import boxset in English on a website, and so I bought 2 sets of it, containing episodes: 1-50 on 6 discs (uncut), which was great, but... It didn't end the Dark Tournament, then, back in 2004, they released a 3rd boxset, containing episodes: 51-78, which ended the Dark Tournament, and started the Chapter Black Saga. After witnessing all of the Dark Tournament, which is my favorite Saga in the Series, I REALLY began to love this show A LOT. I liked it before, but far from how much I love it now. At any rate, the Series' Storyline is superb, and the action is grand. So, the bottom line is: if you like action Anime, but not brainless, no reason violence, with an excellent Storyline, then, I suggest you give this Anime a try. T-O-G-U-R-O; Toguro, yes, Toguro. Man... Team Toguro -- Ultimate. As for my age rating for this Anime: 16+/R (Graphic Violence, Gore, Profanity, Sexual Situations, and Adult Complex Themes). One of the Animes tied in 2nd place for me.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best dub jobs I've ever seen!.......2005-09-24

I am a huge fan of YuYu Hakusho, and this is one of the best dubs ever! Unlike most dubs, the voices fit the characters perfectly.Yusuke and Kuwabara have appropriately
rough adolesant voices, with Kuwabara's having an idiotic tinge to it.Hiei's and Kurama's voices sound cool and demonic. I have nothing against the japanese version, but Yusuke sounded too deep.Greatest action anime ever!

3 out of 5 stars Seen the Entire Series, This Vol. is One of the Worst.......2005-07-29

Being a true YYH fan, I have seen all 112 episodes, and this volume is the 3rd worst of all 32. (Terrible Truths and Dark Tournament Begins are worse than this) There is emotion in this volume, which I like but... it's not very entertaining. But, you shouldn't make this stop you from buying a 5-Star anime. I am still recommending this volume, because or else it will be weird having only volumes 2-32! So... I think you should buy this product.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat decent.......2004-12-17

I was skeptical to how Funimation was gonna handle another anime series and not do another "hatchet" job. Listening to the English track with the Japanese script , you can tell the show has been very "kiddie-fied" and cleaned up. Basically death, alcohol, and sex talk. So I ended up going back to the Japanese track and was pleasently surprised. Great opening and closing tunes , as well as a solid storyline make this one a sure fire hit. Just stay away from the dub and edited versions.
Extras are lousy however. Whoopey, more DBZ saga previews with ludicrously overdone voiceovers compliments of Funimation.

4 out of 5 stars An Amazing Anime.......2004-10-23

This is a great action packed and funny dvd. But compared to the other ones this is horrible. Yuskay is run over by a car and meets boton the grim reper. So yusky meets kounba ruler of the spirt world who explains about an ordeal to get his life back. Yuskay gets a spirt egg it feeds off yuskays spirt if he is good he will be brought back to life if he is bad it will devoer him.

4 out of 5 stars Not Much Happens, Yet Still Fun To Watch.......2004-11-20

This is a simple film, with simple characters, where the plot almost doesn't exist, yet I still enjoyed it. The main reason, Misty Mundae, an actress who makes many cheesy films fun. It's short (50 mins) so it works nice if you wanna watch a movie but don't have much time. It's not for everyone, but then again, Misty movies never are.

1 out of 5 stars Awful --- what a lame effort by Seduction Cinema.......2004-07-23

The women in this one are all hot, but the writing and direction sucks!

Misty Mundae is supposed to be this "free spirit" hippie girl who shows up at the apartment of two straitlaced blonde sisters short of cash. They need a roommate to help them pay the rent. Misty has unshaven armpits for some reason. She takes a shower. They watch. No, it's not even as exciting as it sounds.

Later Misty's girlfriend (A.J. Khan) shows up and they get naked together. The sex scene is incredibly one-dimensional (e.g. boring). Normally I like A.J. Khan but she's wasted here. It's syandard I-do-you-then-you-do-me sex.

Later the younger sister smokes some pot with them and they have a threesome. I thought it might get good when they began stripping her but it got boring pretty quick when they never paid any attention whatsoever to her gorgeous behind.

Finally they trick the older sister into eating some marijuana brownies and then they all have a foursome together, sort of. The sex is very lame and unimaginative. They all ignore eachother's beautiful rear ends in every scene. I guess the moral of this story is you can have boring, unimaginative sex with anyone if you give them pot first. NOT RECOMMENDED!

3 out of 5 stars it was an ok movie.......2004-06-20

3 out of 5 stars For family-friendly viewing only.......2007-02-23

If you like super family friendly films, Miracle Dogs Too will definitely fit your viewing bill. It's a happy, inspiring story for all ages about a young boy named Zack that finds a pair of "miracle" dogs.

Of course, there's more to the story than that. The boy just moved to a new town with his mother and sister, following his parent's divorce. The mother is working at a local nursing home and finding a romantic interest in a local doctor. The sixteen year old sister is being pursued by two separate guys (one played by Preston Jones, who manages to take the possibly innocuous character of Josh, the jock next door, and turn him into a memorable and realistic three dimensional person). Definitely keep an eye out for Preston Jones in other work. Also, Jaleel White shows up for a few scenes. (Remember him as Urkle from Family Matters?)

The DVD doesn't offer any extras, but for families looking for a feel good movie, Miracle Dogs Too is the way to go.
