Editorial Review:
Description
Ira and Oscar, two kids from different cultures, developed an enduring friendship which triumphed over tragedy and taught lasting lessons. An aged crayon drawing found in a trunk awakens memories from the unforgettable summer of 1965. Ira was 11 years old, enjoying her last year of freedom before working on her family's beet farm. When her father hired migrant workers to help in the fields, Ira didn't realize the experience would change her life forever. In spite of local hostility shown to the migrants, Ira befriended Oscar, a young Mexican boy. Their summer of carefree fun was tested by prejudice and taught Ira how to be a true friend and stand up for her beliefs.

Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Ooky Terri DelCampo loves Steel Magnolias Special Edition.......2007-06-20
Steel Magnolias is one of my very favorite movies. I am replacing my VHS tapes with DVDs and it was one of the first ones I replaced. I love the special edition DVD because it told the story of the writer's sister who died young. It gives the movie even more special meaning knowing that it's based on a real life situation rather than one that's completely fictitious. Five Stars!
Worst movie ever........2007-05-27
Yeah I know, most won't agree.
This is the most useless excuse for a movie I've ever seen.
An Outstanding Movie!.......2007-05-26
This is one of my favorite all-time movies. It's set in Lousiana. Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Olivia Dukakis, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah are the main stars of the movie. It starts out as a group of women in a beauty salon getting ready for Julia Roberts' character's wedding. We meet Darryl Hannah's character in the beginning as she comes by looking for work and a place to stay. The story goes over a period of time from Shelby's wedding to the birth of her son and her kidney transplant and her death. At the end of the movie, it shows Darryl Hannah's character heading off to the hospital to have her baby. During the movie, Darry's character went to beauty school, fell in love, got married, and became pregnant. Too bad that a sequel was not made.
Endeering from beginning to end... don't miss it!.......2007-05-22
Steel Magnolias is a movie about family, love, and relationships. The plot revolves around a beauty parlor where the main characters go to become beautiful. The character of the beauty parlor owner is played by Dolly Parton.
At Truvy's Beauty Parlor in Louisiana we learn all about these close group of friends and soon learn the secrets these women carry in their hearts.
M'Lynn, played by Sally Fields is married to Drum Eatenton, a playful man who at the start of the film is busy shooting birds that are perched on a tree on his property. This drives us all crazy, especially those of us that firmly believe on the protection of the environment... but they have a very special reason as a motive.
Daughter of Drum and M'Lynn Eatenton, Shelby, superbly played by Julia Roberts is getting married and we soon see these women go to visit the beauty parlor in preparation for the big day. Annelle Dupuy Desoto, played by Daryl Hannah, has just joined the staff as a hair dresser, "a glamour technician," and soon the women are hard at finding all about "her past" because even though she is "the sweetest thing" just live through puberty and you must have a past.
Ouiser Boudreaux, a bitter, ill tempered and outspoken lady, played deserving of an award by Shirley MacLaine joins the women and she puts Annelle through a rather fun and entertainment interview.
Clairee, a recently widowed woman, played by Olympia Dukakis is the only person that truly understand Ouiser... and the give and take of these women is so endearing and captivating, that we soon find ourselves enchanted by this movie.
As the movie develops we find ourselves involved in the pain and heartache of the challenges these women face. We cried, we laughed, and we walked away wishing that our town would have the close relationships these families share. Indeed a movie worthy of becoming part of any collection. Don't miss it...
Steel Magnolias.......2007-05-13
It was a chick movie. It could have been better but I was in Natchitoches so I just had to see the movie.

Walt Disney studios had previously adapted Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel The Incredible Journey in 1963, and the story proves just as durable in this popular 1993 version, in which the heroic trio of animals are given voices provided by Don Ameche, Michael J. Fox, and Sally Field. They don't actually speak (like the clever critters in Babe), but we hear their "voices" as the lost household pets--Shadow the golden retriever, Chance the bulldog, and Sassy the cat--survive a harrowing series of adventures as they struggle to find their way home. Perfect entertainment for kids, this frequently clever movie offers an abundance of wildlife and beautiful location scenery, and the vocal performances by Ameche, Fox, and Field are surprisingly effective. A hit with parents and children alike, the film was followed by a sequel in 1996. --Jeff Shannon
Description
This thrilling and thoroughly captivating theatrical hit from Disney has become an instant favorite with audiences of all ages. You'll lose your heart to Chance, a fun-loving American bulldog pup; Sassy, a hilarious Himalayan cat who lives up to her name; and Shadow, a wise old golden retriever -- all of whom express themselves with very familiar human voices! The adventure begins when the loving owners of these irresistible pets are forced to leave them in the temporary care of a friend who lives hundreds of miles away. But after several days, the worried animals begin to think their family must be in trouble, so they decide to head for home. On their incredible journey across the ruggedly beautiful Sierras, they encounter unexpected surprises from man, beast, and nature alike. It's an unforgettable story of love, courage, and devotion that will delight and inspire generations to come!

Homeward Bound - The Incredible Journey.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful story. I saw it on television several years ago and loved it. I recently purchased the DVD and every time my grandchildren come to visit, that's the one they want to see over all the others and I watch it with them and enjoy it every time.
A Classic!.......2007-02-27
If you have kids, this is a must have! I love to sit and watch this movie with my son. This is a great remake of the original. Highly recommend.
Timeless family film.......2007-02-19
This movie is a must for Disney collections. Fantastic story of two dogs and a kitty who prefers the indoors who survive the wilds to return home to their family. I'll never tire of this story, and it's nice to re-visit the wonderful sound of Michael J. Fox's voice. A 'tail wagging' tale!

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A Directorial Failure.......2007-07-01
Steve Carell can be a good actor, witness his performance in Little Miss Sunshine and he receives some great support here from Catherine Keener and Romany Malco, but somehow it just doesn't work. The idea behind the film is tenuous, and is made even more so by modeling the hero on Pee Wee Herman (grown man rides bicycle, collects action figures). Carell simply comes across as being silly.
There are some uproariously funny scenes, which justify the time worth watching the film, but like a Chinese dinner, you'll feel empty an hour later.
Funny!.......2007-06-27
This is a good laugh of a movie. You have to see it. I've watched it like a lot. You have to have a gr8 sense of humor and sillyness. Don't take it personally if you relate to the main guy. He is hilarious....
Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17
Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.
R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15
"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format! (The original unrated DVD and R-rated full screen versions were released in December 2005, while the new R-rated widescreen wasn't available until January 2006.)
For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.
One of my all-time favorites!!!.......2007-06-10
This is one of the best comedies of all time!! I've watched it 25-30 times! The unrated DVD has some really great deleted scenes that are must-sees!!

I bought it just for completeness really, its nothing like the tv show. Pretty much the only good thing in the entire film is the dudes with the shiny black armour, I think they're skeletors minions or something and they're cool. Pity he-man kills like 500 of them at a time.
Could've Done Better But An OK Attempt.......2007-05-07
Masters of the Universe. A movie with He-Man in it would have been something beyond my wildest dreams. I'm saddened to say I was fairly disappointed with this live action version. The plot line was alright, scattered at best but okay. Some of the new characters brought in were atrocious. Gwildor I am sorry to say could have been left out of it. But considering back when this version was made, the special effects and the budget just wouldn't allow for the inclusion of Orko. Blade was cool in the fact it gave He-Man another swordsman to duel with. Karg should have been left out of it.
He-Man was definitely not a role meant for Dolph Lundgren I'm sorry again. Lundgren did fine in Rocky 4 but when it came to something like this where He-Man's speech should have been constant throughout the movie, just dimmed it. Lundgren spoke little if nil throughout the picture.
Frank Langella stole the whole show as Skeletor and rightly so. It's fairly disconcerting when I actually dug the bad guy more than my favorite good guy. A great choice by director Gary Goddard not to hinder Langella's acting by making him wear a flat out mask. Incorporating the prosthetics into his facial features was monument in making Skeletor a memorable baddie.
Meg Foster, whom folks may recognize from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, I thought did exceptional as Evil Lyn. My only complaint about the Evil Lyn character was that she never that I could see, showed her powers in the movie. Skeletor at least got to perform that sick looking wound thing as well as his "Godlike" powers towards the end of the movie, but nothing for Evil Lyn??? For shame Goddard, for shame!
Of course we have Courtney Cox Arquette now, who just recently gained fame for her role as Monica on Friends, debuting as Julie Winston. James Tolkan who people saw in Top Gun, playing Det. Lubic. Robert Duncan Macneill who folks remember as Tom Paris in Star Trek Voyager, playing Kevin Corrigan. Chelsea Field who folks saw in movies such as Andre, playing Teela. Christina Pickles, whom we saw in George Of The Jungle and The Wedding Singer, played the Sorceress. And of course Billy Barty, whom we saw in movies such as Legend and the Weird Al movie UHF.
In other aspects I must say the Power Sword looked brilliant, the laser effects and the final duel between He-Man and Skeletor had a decent amount of zing. And the graphics and music that were associated with the Cosmic Key were interesting and appropriate I think. Kudos to Bill Conti of Rocky fame who contributed to the orchestral soundtrack and themes for the movie.
All in all with a movie like this I can understand why studios and distributors now tend to shy away from a more updated telling of the He-Man lore. With the re-release of the cartoons on DVD and the popular demand that followed, the reigniting flame for the He-Man film has never been more warranted. This movie is still no matter what worth purchasing because of it's part in the He-Man movie/cartoon legacy and collection, but it's not an extremely good movie in my opinion. Maybe he should have gotten a few more pointers from Superman director and savior Bryan Singer.
Does Dolph Lundgren truly have the power???? I dont think so.
Long live Skeletor!.......2007-04-10
Wow! I remember this movie. I saw it as a kid, huddled in a friend's house and it was the best thing ever! As an adult, I admit, it's cheesy. Well, so was the cartoon it's based off of. But it's a good kind of cheese.
I never watched it for He-Man, Man-at-Arms, Teela, or any of the good guys. Heck no! I was a fanatic over the bad guys. Skeletor was my hero. Growing up, I didn't want to be She-Ra or Teela or anyone like that. I wanted to be Evil-Lyn.
In that aspect, this movie didn't fail. With the PG rating, Skeletor was able to be far eviler then his cartoon counterpart. He was no longer the fumbling fool and comidic device that we saw on Saterday morning. This was who Skeletor was meant to be; evil, cunning and down-right sadistic. He outshone He-Man and the other Masters. He was the best part of the movie!
Also, the audio commentary on the DVD is great and really helps understand what was going on back then and give you an insight in the mind of the creators.
Pure Fun.......2007-04-01
I dont remember watching He Man growing up, but I think I saw this movie. I watched this movie without thinking it would be anything speical, and I was wrong. The preview really drew me into the movie before I watched it. It was pure fun, and an excellent sci fi movie. Dolph Lundgreen was the main source for finding this movie, thanks Dolph! Where the heck are you these days? I didnt check all reviews but at the very, very end of the movie Skeltor comes on and says "I'll be back". Ha! Guess that movie never happened.
Great cheesy eighties fun.......2007-03-26
Heman, one of my favorite childhood cartoon heros brings the battle to earth on the bigscreen. Fun movie, not a great work of art, but good cheesy eighties fun. Plus, Courtney cox when she was actually pretty hot.
Don't expect an epic, this is Conan the Barbarian for kids.

Not to be confused with the 1990 comedy flop featuring Uma Thurman, this Where the Heart Is boasts a winning performance from Natalie Portman. Novalee Nation (Portman), a pregnant teenager from Tennessee, is bound for California with her worthless boyfriend, Willy Jack (Dylan Bruno). A pit stop at an Oklahoma Wal-Mart proves fateful when Willy Jack abandons her there. She secretly sets up camp at the megastore and spends her days meeting with kindly booster Sister Husband (Stockard Channing) and eccentric librarian Forney Hall (James Frain). Her life takes another turn after she gives birth in the store (clean up, aisle six!) and finds a best friend in sassy nurse Lexie Coop (Ashley Judd). Meanwhile, Willy Jack has found a talent agent (Joan Cusack) and tries to make some life changes of his own.
Where The Heart Is offers charming, folksy fun; homespun wisdom; and an obstacle course of plot development (if the Wal-Mart angle weren't enough, there's also a kidnapping, a tornado, and at least half a dozen other major events thrown in). Director Matt Williams, who produced the popular sitcoms Roseanne and Home Improvement, takes television's cut-to-commercial route to make giant leaps in space and time from scene to scene. It's disorienting, but the remarkable female cast (which includes Sally Field in a cameo) lends plausiblilty to the muddle, even when you don't think anything more could possibly happen. --Shannon Gee
Description
Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman shine in this offbeat, delicious slice of life about a down-on-her-luck Southern teen. After gaining 15 minutes of fame for giving birth to "The Wal-Mart Baby", Novalee Nation (Portman) begins to put her life together with the help of the kind, quirky strangers who become her surrogate family. It's an inspiring celebration of love, friendship and self-worth that delivers "quality, emotionally satisfying entertainment" (ReelViews).

heartwarming.......2007-05-09
I really like this movie, it is a movie about overcoming whatever horrible things life throws at you. Natalie Portman does a great job as a pregnant teen with a loser boyfriend. After been left in a strange town she meets people who will forever change her life for the better.
where the heart is.......2007-03-28
Jade Rioux Book review 3/25/07
"Where the heart is", is a book about a girl named novalle, who finds herself in a difficult but common situation. She has to deal with many battles and struggles all because of one man. When everything is going right and all is good something always seems to go wrong. Until one day when novalle meets a women "sister husband" who supports and comforts novalle through this difficult era in her life. From then on novalles life was never the same.
Novalle goes through some terrible times. But there's always that one person who is uplifting and trustworthy to her, named Forney. As novalle goes through tough times he is always there getting her through them. Novalle gets so caught up in her own issues that she fails to give credit or reconciliation to him. Forney is constantly making an effort to impress novalle, but novalle just doesn't seem to get what he is trying to do.
I would recommend this book to everyone. This book was amazing and has such a strong true story line. "Where the heart is" will show you a girl who is in need for much help and reaches out for someone to be loved by. The story was so real to me and I think that when you read it, it is easy to put yourself in Novalles shoes, which helps you understand her situation more in depth. It will show you its ok to ask for help and someone will always be there to love you no matter where you are.
A Great Movie.......2007-03-12
This is a real keeper! It's quirky but sentimental. A great job was done adapting from the book to the screen. Natalie Portman & Ashley Judd are terrific in it. Have watched it a number of times (borrowed from library) and finally purchased a copy for my very own.
I Love this Movie!!!.......2007-03-10
This is a nice story with a lot of angles.
I was watching tv late one night and saw Sally Field as I
was flipping through the channels. Her range playing mothers is incredible. In the early 80s, she played the rugged individualist widow in the very excellent "Places in the Heart." She also played the assertive and supportive mother in "Forrest Guamp." In this movie, she showed she has a spectrum of roles. It was a nice contrast.
There isa sort of Cinderella aspect to this movie also that puts it in the same class as "Fried Green Tomatoes."
Heart warming movie..........2007-01-18
My daughter and I both love this movie, we could not wait to add it to our collection. Natalie Portman is our favorite young actress.

Sheathing itself in bad taste, this film flaunts its tackiness, its machismo, and its very stupidity, which of course makes for a lot of dopey fun. Harley Davidson (Mickey Rourke) returns to his roots, the LA of 1996 (the film was set in the near future, as it was made in 1991). Burbank has become an airport, a new drug called Crystal Dream is all the rage, and Harley's favorite bar is being torn down. To save it, he and the Marlboro Man (Don Johnson, at his most engaging) concoct an armed robbery that goes awry. Instead of cash, they end up with a shipment of Crystal Dream. Hunted by a drug dealer's goons, the two bark, fight, drink, and squint at each other as they try to get themselves out of their mess. This is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for the monster-truck crowd, with plenty of breasts, choppers, broken pool cues, and empty bottles. It's impossible to blame this film for being so emphatically trashy; its creators would consider that a compliment, anyway. --Keith Simanton
Description
"Hotly staged bike chases" (Variety), state-of-the-art weaponry and "excellent explosions" (Hollywood Drama-Logue) form a deadly combination in this "lively" (Los Angeles Times) action film about a couple of modern-day, motorcycle-ridin' Robin Hoods. Starring Mickey Rourke (Get Carter), Don Johnson (Tin Cup) and Vanessa L. Williams (Shaft), Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man contains thrills and excitement that never let upwith surprise twists at every turn! In the lawless world of the future, drifters Harley Davidson (Rourke) and The Marlboro Man (Johnson) help an old friend save his bar by robbing the very bank trying to takeover his property. But this is no ordinary bank and the armored car they roll is filled not with moneybut drugs! Now Harley and Marlboro become the objects of a ruthless manhunt by the corrupt bank chief's deadly and unstoppable henchmen.

It's a guy thing.......2007-01-06
My husband loves this movie. It must be a guy thing.
Great movie, the scarecrow LOVED it.......2006-10-15
There are a few acting pairs that just work well together. Redford-Newman Gibson-Glover, Bacon-Ward (see tremors). I'd like to nominate the pair of Don Johnson and Mickey Roarke. They complement each other well in this film.
For starters you don't have to bring your brain for this one, you can just tune out and enjoy it. Guns, bikes, babes (well not that many babes). It's the classic tale of good guys vs. the bad guys or more accurate: Bad guys vs. really bad guys. Pop open a beer, watch some crap get totaled, and watch a great screen duo at work
Cowboys on wheels!.......2006-10-10
"Harley Davidson and the Marlboro man" is a funny entertainment and nothing else. It's a fine resemblance of a comic for adults. There is black humor and no sense situations but blended with delirious action. A couple of odd job men, decide in order to protect his pal, who is seriously threaten with a big amount of money; if not his Rock and Roll pub will be closed. They will plan a simple heist to pay such amount, but for those intersections of the random, they will steal the money to a gang that deals with crystal blue.
Please try to watch carefully the hidden homage to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, when the jump from the 20th floor to a swimming pool.

badass movie.......2006-01-25
i like movies that have violence and stuff so i thought this one would be cool from the writing on the back and the rating.
once i saw it i was like wo. i didnt think a cheesy movie could be so awesome. its got everything violence girls emotional seens and a whole lot of other stuff. i really dont no who mickey rourke and the other guy are its the first movie ive ever seen with them. this is one hell of a movie though. i cant express in words how this movie inspires me to kick someones ass. its my favorite movie ever.
One of Those Must Haves..........2006-01-01
First, I actually saw this movie at the theater. Anyone else out there? I loved it then, and I love it now.
I'm a big fan of Mickey Rourke, and this is my favorite role of his (a close second is SIN CITY). Is there one guy out there that wouldn't love to trade places on that great bike of his for at least an hour? Too cool; he was the only pick to make that role as believable as the script could carry.
Next is Don Johnson. I personally think the guy is a shmuck, but he's great in this role. As a buddy movie, he was the perfect compliment to Rourke. And he provides some of the best lines of the film.
The supporting characters are also great, with Tom Sizemore (who makes great military and home porn flicks, and beats his girlfriends), Big John Studd (of pro wrestling fame), Daniel Baldwin (before he got fat), Tia Carrera (before WAYNE'S WORLD), and of course a gorgeous Vanessa Williams (the real hottie of this movie).
The script and acting overall may be suspect (especially that little twerp Giancarlo Esposito), but who cares...it's lots of violence, hotties, and action.
Bottomline is that this is one of the best movies for guys that like movies, and a must-have for the film collection.

William Holden is the hunky drifter who rides the rails into a small Midwest town with dreams of landing a "respectable" job with his rich college buddy (Cliff Robertson). Kim Novak is the small-town beauty queen engaged to Robertson who falls for the cocky dreamer, as do repressed schoolmarm spinster Rosalind Russell and Novak's tomboyish kid sister Susan Strasberg. Their unleashed passions reach a crescendo at the Labor Day picnic.
Joshua Logan directed William Inge's play on Broadway and carried it to Hollywood, earning Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director in his screen-directing debut. Holden is years too old for the role but oozes sex appeal and makes a swoony stud when he takes his shirt off (or when, better yet, it's ripped from his back by a boozing Russell), and Novak is a lovely lost girl yearning for something she can't quite grasp. Arthur O'Connell earned an Oscar nomination as Russell's tippling boyfriend. The film was a huge popular and critical hit, but Logan's stiff and strident direction hasn't dated well. He makes his points in big capital letters--subtlety was never his strong point--and loses the natural beauty of the Kansas locations when he takes the climactic picnic scenes into an obviously artificial soundstage. Picnic remains a loved American classic, largely for Holden's tough-guy vulnerability and James Wong Howe's brilliant widescreen color photography. --Sean Axmaker

Desire under the elms.......2007-05-17
Years after become famous for his role in the film version GOLDEN BOY, William Holden was still working against being typecast in "hunk" roles, none odder than the drifter Hal in this this beautifully photographed film version of William Inge's famous drama of loneliness in small-town Kansas. There were so many younger fine actors who could have played the part--Brando, Newman, Ralph Meeker (the latter two who played Hal on Broadway)--that it's a bit astonishing to wonder what the studio saw in Holden: he's certainly got the torso for the part, but he's fifteen years older than his love interest in the film (Kim Novak) and seven years older than Cliff Robertson, who plays his college classmate--and he looks it, too. And the role of the boisterous braggart Hal is almost exactly wrong for the ruminative Holden's talents. But he's still fine enough an actor to be moving, and he and Novak have an incredibly memorable slow erotic dance to the tune of "Moonglow" at the Labor Day festivities of the film's title for which alone it is worth seeing the entire movie.
Novak is herself ideally cast as the insecure passive beauty queen Madge Owens, and she has solid support from Verna Felton as the sensible Mrs. Potts and Arthur O'Connell as the bewildered Howard Bevans. As the loud and awesomely lonely schoolteacher Rosemary Sidney, Rosalind Russell is also very well cast, although she tends to overplay her hand too much (as she always did in her later years); Susan Strasberg tries hard as Madge's intellectual sister Millie but is far too beautiful to be taken seriously as a teenage "goon." The screenplay is a bit too worked out and stagey, but the gorgeous James Wong Howe cinematography beautifully displays that midwestern American Gothic territory so peculiar to the work of William Inge--that odd and fascinating combination of wide open landscapes and claustrophobically repressed emotional space.
OK but Overrated.......2007-05-13
Given that this film was nominated for numerous Academy Awards, I was expecting something a bit better. Were it not for William Holden's acting and an innovatively shot final scene, the film would be quite forgettable.
"Picnic" is a fairly simple tale of a young lady named Madge (played by Novak) having to choose between her good-looking, stable, wealthy fiance, named Alan (played by Cliff Robertson) and a ruggedly handsome but poor new-guy-in-town, named Hal (Holdan's character). You can predict right from the start who is going to get the girl in the end.
Hal can't seem to keep a job, and so he moves to a small Kansas town seeking employment from Alan, his old college roommate, whose father owns a large agribusiness. He gets the job but then falls for Alan's fiancee, Madge (Novak), and she falls for him too. His pursuit of Madge destroys his friendship with Alan and costs him his job, but you can be sure that the film's ending is ultimately a happy one: He gets the girl.
I say the film's ending is "ultimately a happy one," but I suspect that, in real life, most women would rather have the rich guy over the poor one. Holden's character is the kind of guy a "bad girl" might have an affair with, but Robertson's character is the type that most long to marry. Films like "Picnic" push the socially damaging "Lady and the Tramp" idea that unemployed, vagrant "bad boys" make desirable husbands. If they would have made a realistic sequel to "Picnic," it should have shown Holden's character sleeping around, laying around the house drunk, sponging off Madge, and beating her because she isn't quick enough with his dinner.
oh, the good old white america!.......2007-03-09
kim novak looked like a mixture of love goddess and plump bimbo, mysteriously beautiful and overweighted with a pencil thin waistline. william holden played a gather-no-moss rolling stone bum with empty ambition, cocky, exaggerated persona.
kansas, oh, the heartland of america in the good old days. still got no immigrants yet to churn and mix up the infrastructure of the pure white society. picnic or no picnic, it's just like jane austin's novels, mother's only daydream was wishing her daughter marry into rich family, endless buying power, parties...but some devil-like black sheep out-of-towner, a refreshing bum just showed up and messed up every stereotyped routine that supposed to be business as usual match in heaven romance.
holden's role looked a bit too old if seen by today's standard. but he's one of the natural talents (except ronald reagon, of course).
a wonderful movie if it could be less predictable and formulaic.
some of the scenes, based upon today's editing angles, should be deleted without hesitation. dialog? a bit of staged, don't you think? but these are not important at all in a picnic movie.
also, great and wonderful sound track in this movie. appropriate, subtle, not overly done like what all the walter disney's production teams did to their movies, the music scores (sound track?) mimicking every movement of all of the characters in those movies is nothing but inherited from their cartoons.
Still Pretty Tense.......2007-01-16
One of my all-time favorite movies, "Picnic" embodies what a 1950s director like Joshua Logan could do with the limitations put on him not only by the watchdogs of the film industry but also by the social contexts of the times. The setting of Midwestern Kansas smalltown is a perfect metaphor for the clash between the superficial, outwardly values of the times and the raw, below-the-surface desires and passions that must be kept in check. The clash between age and repression--beautifully depicted by Rosalind Russell--and youth and possibility--seen in the characters of Kim Novak and Susan Strasberg--is another refreshing insight subtly created by the script and the director.
The 1950s shown in the film may have been repressive, but were they not a far gentler, more humanly meaningful times when the tensions of life were the sources of creativity and larger possibilities.
