And so, the sun sets on Cicely, Alaska. While Northern Exposure somewhat jumped the moose in its last season, there are enough characteristically "weird, almost surreal" moments to make season 6 a nice place to revisit. The auspicious season opener, "Dinner at Seven Thirty," is a typically disarming and disorienting quirk fest that recasts the characters in a parallel New York universe. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) is married to a high society (and high maintenance) Shelly (Cynthia Geary), Maggie (Janine Turner) is their au pair, Ed (Darrin E.Burrows) is an Armani clad corporate raider, Holling (John Cullum) is a Piano Man, Ruth-Anne (Peg Phillips) is the leader of an internal medicine group, Chris (John Corbett) is an inarticulate fashion photographer, and Maurice (Barry Corbin) is the luxury-highrise doorman. "I'd rather practice medicine in some hick rural outback than stay here another minute," Joel rebels, returning things to what passes for normal in Cicely. Another early gem is "The Robe," with guest star Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti) as no less than the Devil who tries to corrupt Shelly.

But then the series goes off the beaten path. Joel, following a bumpy courtship with Maggie, goes "Up River" to live in a remote fishing village (His final episode is the bittersweet, "The Quest," in which he departs for good for his "jeweled city"). Enter new doctor Phillip Capra (Paul Provenza) and his journalist wife, Michelle (Teri Polo), brie-eating yuppies from Los Angeles. < I>Northern Exposure remained a fish-out-of-water comedy, but these two characters are as bland as tilapia. Though not nearly the hard cases that a resistant Joel was, they, too, succumb to Cicely's charms, and by series' end, Michelle is having hallucinatory forest chats with Joel's former New York rabbi. Happily, the rest of the characters are still good company. Between Ruth-Anne and trapper Walt (Moultrie Patten) and Maurice (Corbin) and Officer Barbara Semanski (Diane Delano), love really blossoms this season. But as Iris Dement sings in the heartbreaking lament, "Our Town," which ends this series on a lovely grace note (and is one of the few originally broadcast songs to survive the transition to DVD), "Nothing good ever lasts." Northern Exposure lasted six seasons, which is good enough. To paraphrase a postcard Joel sends to Maggie in "The Quest," Cicely is a state of mind, and thanks to DVD, there is no need to "kiss it goodbye." --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars Great show, but once again the original songs are missing.......2007-06-25

One of the great things about this series was its great selection of pop songs for every important occasion, conclusion, or ending. I don't remember all of them, but there are two that stuck with me for season 6. The DVD series at least kept one of them. The series finale kept the tune "our town" as the theme to the great montage at the end. However, the last episode that Rob Morrow starred as Dr. Fleishman had a song called "Forever Night Shade Mary" by the "Latin Playboys" that was a great fit for that ending. All the replacement songs sound hokey and I can forgive a lot of them. But some of these episodes are forever linked with the original song...

So in short, NE was a great, great tv series that may have had another year or two of good tv left before being prematurely canceled. The DVDs don't have the original songs (except season 1) and it's a big distraction for those who know the show well. But I admit, the stories are so fun and quirky I still had to buy all the DVDs. Here's hoping "they" get the rights to the original songs one day... oh well...

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonder-ful Television Series.......2007-06-14

Northern Exposure is a virtual treasure trove of psychological and mythological insight. As often mentioned, connections to Jung and Joseph Campbell abound, both of whom are quite often conspicuously brought to mind. These connections can be followed by reading some of the material mentioned in the various narratives of the series and thereby discovering the practically unending depth and sophistication of many of the episodes. In my opinion the second and third seasons are the best, but all are well worth repeated viewing. I will not go into detail on specific episodes or try to give a synopsis of the whole, but rather list some connections that I have found which might help to shed some light on what is going on. The theme of Northern Exposure, as I see it, is based on a Jungian/Campbellian inspired vision of how we as contemporary viewers can use the psychological and mythological insights of Gnosticism presented in the narrative images of the show to help us find meaning in the everyday events of our own lives, thereby helping us achieve some kind of spiritual growth and, just maybe, eventually leading to transformation.

Joel Fleischman, the Jewish doctor (healer), is mythologically, symbolically and phonetically associated with Yeshua, another Jewish healer better known as Jesus, whose sign is the fish (Yeshua [and] fishermen). Joel, while being initiated into the mysteries of existence, Cicely style, serves as our unwitting spiritual guide on the journey of individuation and spiritual realization. When we meet Joel he is 28, making him around 33 at the time of the completion of his quest, the age Yeshua was said to be at his end. Realization, by the way, is brought about by the transformative knowledge (gnosis) that human existence is an uncanny mystery, not by means of faith in the historical accuracy of supposed supernatural events, reduced, as Campbell liked to say, to "newspaper reports." Mary Margaret O'Connell (Maggie) is his companion on this Gnostic quest (like Mary Magdalene was for Yeshua in the Gnostic tradition) and serves as the catalyst for his transformation--just as each sex serves as the mystical other for its opposite, knowledge of whom in some strange way serves as one of the keys to spiritual wholeness (cf. The Gospel of Philip). Adam and Eve are of course Adam and Eve, whose insolence and hubris are obvious enough in various episodes, but who, in Gnostic tradition, are not "responsible" for the benighted, lost, alienated condition of humanity. Thus the origins of the primeval couple are at first a stupefying mystery, but, when we find out the truth about Adam and Eve in "Our Wedding" (a magnificent episode from season 3 that is inexhaustible of this stuff), things are not what we thought they were as taught by the institutional tradition. The other characters, with the exceptions of Chris and Maurice, would then of course be the apostles. Maurice is a kind of mild mannered Yaldabaoth (cf. The Hypostasis of the Archons and The Secret Revelation of John in the Nag Hammadi library), responsible for creating things as they are (he secured Joel's services and virtually owns the town) but unable to control everything, though, like Yaldabaoth the head archon, he would like to.

This brings us to Chris, who in many ways is the keystone to the Gnostic interpretation of Northern Exposure, for he is the end toward which the others ascend. Chris can be viewed as someone who has realized what Joel is unknowingly searching for: the Christ within. Chris is the same age as Joel and Maggie and in many ways is the measure by which we can view their development. Having previously been a criminal but now reborn (internally resurrected--see the episode "Crime and Punishment" from season 4), Chris, by virtue of the miracle of the virgin birth or spiritual realization in life, serves as a guide for others on how they too might realize the Christ within, by means of compassion, self-knowledge and spiritual honesty. Thus Joel is to Jesus as Chris is to Christ. Jesus is the physical, empirical component in Gnostic soteriology; Christ is the spiritual, metaphysical component. You notice that after Joel leaves Alaska, Maggie ends up with Chris (final episode, "Tranquility Base," season 6), who is waiting as her spiritual mate following her transformation thanks to her initiation into the mysteries with Joel, who of course served as the physical catalyst for her spiritual awakening. It is only after Maggie receives salvific gnosis, which results in the transcendence of her troubled relationships with men, that she can enter into her proper identity as herself and the male other, no longer in a "relationship" (ego to ego) but rather in her own individuated identity, which now includes the male other as part of her Self--that Self being the divine feminine, the very source of wisdom and life, Mary Magdalene.

This analogy of Northern Exposure to a Jungian/Campbellian inspired Gnosticism is neither complete nor exactly symmetrical, and I do not present it here as the gospel of Northern Exposure by any means; but I hope it can serve as a skeleton key which might help to deepen appreciation and understanding of what is going on at some of the more esoteric levels of this marvelous show. There are certainly many other archetypes which could be delineated, but I think this is an overarching theme in the series that opens the door to more discoveries. Just try following some of the Gnostic allusions in Northern Exposure; in doing so you will find that if you put forth a little effort and use your imagination the results will be magical in the alchemist's sense of the word.

3 out of 5 stars I wouldn't start here...........2007-05-23

I am a huge Norther Exposure fan, so I had to buy the 6th season to complete my collection. However, I wouldn't start here. The 6th season is a let down compared to the rest of the Seasons. If you have just browsed here, it may be common sense, but stat with #1 and work you way up.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than I Remembered.......2007-05-14

The sixth season of "Northern Exposure" is where I finally tuned out, sadly. (Perhaps because it changed nights of the week?) I bought the sixth-season DVD more in an effort to round out my "N.E." DVD collection but I have this somewhat surprising comment to make: I'm very much enjoying the sixth season! Would I rather have a full season of Joel? Probably, but the Capras bring their own certain "sumpin-sumpin" to Cicely and , much like the final season of "The X-Files," I'm liking this final season much more than I remember enjoying it when it was on TV and I'm certainly enjoying it much more than I expected to. Give it a chance to win you over, too.

5 out of 5 stars Sentimental favorite.......2007-05-13

It just gets better! Another great season with all the folks in Ciciley, AL. Be ready for laughter and tears and nostalgia. If you are a fan, don't miss this. If you aren't a fan, why aren't you!?

Northern Exposure - The Complete First Season
Whether it's a snowy nude sprint down Main Street, the mysterious appearance of a long-lost relative, or the improbable death of yet another of Maggie's boyfriends, life's never dull in the remote hamlet of Cicely, Alaska. Colorful characters and quirky plots propelled Northern Exposure into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS "dramedy" series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later. In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays his medical-school tuition. Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher (John Corbett), Holling, the bartender (John Cullum), Maurice, the town patriarch (Barry Corbin), Ed, the filmmaker (Darren E. Burrows), and Maggie, the bush pilot (Janine Turner), among others--that keeps the series consistently entertaining. The town develops its own offbeat personality as well, a Mayberry-meets-Twin-Peaks blend of Native mysticism, Aurora Borealis-induced dreams, unlikely tales of long-lost family members, and rumors of a Bigfoot-like creature known simply as "Adam." Northern Exposure provides a utopian escape--a place where life is interesting but never dangerous, everyone's insightful, the mystical becomes real, and nobody's burdened with a mundane 9-to-6 desk job. Cicely is a delightful place to visit, even if it's only for an hour at a time. A mid-season replacement, season 1 consists of just eight episodes on two DVDs. Each episode includes 5-10 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes. --Shane Burnett

Northern Exposure - The Complete Second Season
The colorful cast of characters from Cicely, Alaska, returns for a new set of adventures in Northern Exposure: The Complete Second Season. While much of the first season was devoted to establishing the plot, each of the seven episodes in season 2 helps us to know the offbeat ensemble of Cicely residents a little better. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), the New York urbanite stationed in small-town Alaska to pay off his medical-school tuition, still complains constantly about his assignment, but it's clear the town's growing on him when he passes up an opportunity to return home (if only temporarily). We learn from town patriarch Maurice (Barry Corbin) that retired astronauts have groupies, and when a beautiful woman steals the voice of DJ "Chris in the Morning" (John Corbett), it's no huge surprise when the long-deceased spirit of "One Who Waits" provides Chris with an ancient Indian cure.

But it's the chemistry between Joel and Maggie (Janine Turner) that really makes the series sizzle. The season is book-ended by a pair of breakups that leave first Joel, and then Maggie single, clearing the way for the romance to come in later seasons. The season includes "Spring Break," one of the best-loved episodes from the series. With the impending arrival of spring, libidos run amok, a wave of petty crime hits the town, and the men in town blow off steam au naturale in the annual "Running of the Bulls."

Season 2's packaging and extras are virtually identical to those from season 1. The two-disc set comes sheathed in a collectible mini zippered nylon "parka," and each episode includes deleted scenes and bloopers. There are no retrospectives or interviews with cast and crew, and no printed materials accompany the discs. --Shane Burnett

The premise of an isolated and remote town in Alaska actually ends up seeming pretty charming by the time you are done watching.

I highly recommend it!!

Welcome back to Cicely, Alaska, where whimsy and magical realism are always in season. While Northern Exposure's heart is as big as all outdoors, its charms are starting to wear a little thin in its penultimate season, particularly John Cullum's New Age-y DJ McDreamy, Chris (one longs for that season 1 episode in which he lost his voice). But there is compensation in such sweet, unexpected moments as the one in "A River Doesn't Run Through It," in which bush pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) finds the tape recorder of Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), who is out in the field, and, missing his voice, sits down to listen to one of his tapes. The long-awaited thawing of what Joel calls their "bizarre" relationship is this season's biggest development. Their efforts to "go out" and be nicer to each other are frustrated by such nuisances as a dust-mite allergy ("Mite Makes Right"). Another blessed event is the birth of Shelley's (Cynthia Geary) so-called "Little Pooper," but not before she freaks at impending motherhood ("Baby Blues") and has a series of laundromat encounters with her future child at different stages in her life, from Barbie-playing adolescent to aspiring Dallas Cowboy cheerleader ("Hello, I Love You"). Aspiring young filmmaker and shaman Ed (Darren E. Burrows) finds himself at a crossroads in "Rosebud," one of his better episodes, in which he is charged with organizing a film festival to put Cicely on the map. Peter Bogdanovich, as himself, regales one and all with his Orson Welles stories, and encourages Ed to finally make a movie. A quintessential love-it-or-hate-it Northern Exposure episode is "Mr. Sandman," in which the Northern Lights cause the residents to swap their dreams. The season ends on a heartwarming grace note with "Lovers and Madmen," in which Joel, who has always kept himself aloof from the close-knit community (in "Rosebud," he resists joining the volunteer fire department), at last accepts that he has become a "Cicelian," after discovering a frozen wooly mammoth. Too bad the series couldn't have ended here before finally jumping the caribou in its last season. --Donald Liebenson

One of the few shows out there that make you smile and feel good after you've watched it.

3 out of 5 stars where's all the good music gone ???.......2007-05-28

i am a HUGE NX fan...
where's all the good music that originally aired in the show ?????
the music helped 'make' this series... (i think season 1 & 2 have most of all the original tunes)...
so why didn't they use the original music on these dvds ?
did they not get the permission to use all those great songs on these new discs ???
doesn't make sense to me at all...
VERY disappointing, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Season!.......2007-05-13

I love Season Five of Northern Exposure, it might even be my favorite, and would say that this set is definitely worth the price (especially if, like me, you feel the need to re-view the series in its totality every so often)--after all, it's the second to last season in the series, so you can still pretend that it'll go on forever while you watch:) Also, we have a lot of great episodes here. Some of my favorites are "A River Doesn't Run Through It, which includes a guest appearance by an adorable young Jack Black, "Fish Story," where we see Holling's artistic side come through in paint-by-number form, and "The Gift of the Maggie," where Maggie shows her affection for Joel in a very sweet, though slightly misunderstood (by Joel) way. This is a wonderful set, full of all the quirks and sweetness that any Northern Exposure fan loves and expects.

5 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure - Complete 5th Season.......2007-04-03

It was exactly what I expected, a reminder of one of the best TV series.

4 out of 5 stars Season Five.......2007-04-03

We return once again to Cicely, Alaska with a visit to the oddball characters of a small middle-of-nowhere town that usually makes a tv show a hit. As far as the product itself, it's the standard fair of a boxed set, great crisp clean photos from the series on the packaging and easy to follow menus on the discs. With this season, we get five discs, one sided this time out which I feel helps the viewing out because no you don't have to be constantly flipping the discs over to view the next part of the series (did that make sense?). Also included at the on disc one and disc five are the deleted scenes from different episodes. Gone however are the bloopers which are missed because they are usually so fun to watch.

As for the show itself, this was the season that was going to determine the future of the series. For me, the early part of the season lacked that certain something in the stories that were such a hit in the previous seasons. There is a change in the writing and lack of good stories in the early season. I still enjoy them but that extra 'perkiness' is absent. Mid season sees three religion influence episodes come in and the latter part of the season returns to the fully entertaining aspects that was the cast and setting. We are introduced to recurring characters like Cal the violinist and locales like Walt Kupfer, Hayden Keys, Adam, and Office Semansky begin taking larger recurring roles (especially Walt, he figure prominantly into season 5). Changes are made to the regulars, including Ed from film afficiando into shaman, the arrival of Holling and Shelly's baby, and the officially dating of Joel and Maggie. A bit of a minor annoyance is the episodes are aired out of sequence of when they were filmed. You can judge the order on your own by taking note of Chris 'in the Mornings' Stephens' hair length and beard growth.

Overall, it's a delight to continue into the past and relive the entire Northern Exposure setting and enjoy the kooky characters/stories. Packaging is standard, this one in brilliant purple with individual photo enhanced disc boxes. Not the perfect season but among the best tv has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars BEST T.V. Series EVER!.......2007-06-17

Has some of the best insights into the human condition, and very good storytelling. In fact I learned more from watching this show in highschool than I did going to school.

I too am SEVERELY DISSAPOINTED with the music change in many of the episodes. Why are they messing with such a good thing? Is this some kind of copywrite infringement deal or something?

When I bought the DVD I was looking forward to hearing 2 songs in particular, that I wanted to hear again because it was so touching when I first saw it. One was in Ep. 4.11 Survival of the Species when the female vocals were playing as the women burried the women's things in Maggie's yard. It was painfully ungratifying to hear it replaced with some grating operatic substitute that had no place at all in the scene. The other was in Ep. 6.15 at the end of "the Quest" when Joel is on the boat back to New York. That sub song was equally irritable. And many other little songs here and there that was so jarring to hear, they seemed really out of place. Are they even coming out with the original music or is this it? Why oh why did they have to change it.

The theme of Northern Exposure, as I see it, is based on a Jungian/Campbellian inspired vision of how we as contemporary viewers can use the psychological and mythological insights of Gnosticism presented in the narrative images of the show to help us find meaning in the everyday events of our own lives, thereby helping us achieve some kind of spiritual growth and, just maybe, eventually leading to internal revivification, i.e. the metaphorical "virgin birth."

Having previously been a criminal but now reborn (internally resurrected--see the episode "Crime and Punishment," season 4), Chris, by virtue of the metaphorical virgin birth or spiritual realization in life, serves as a guide for others on how they too might realize the Christ within, by means of compassion, self-knowledge and spiritual honesty. Thus Joel is to Jesus as Chris is to Christ. Jesus is the physical, empirical component in Gnostic soteriology; Christ is the spiritual, metaphysical component. You notice that after Joel leaves Alaska, Maggie ends up with Chris (final episode, "Tranquility Base," season 6), who is waiting as her spiritual mate following her transformation, owing to her initiation into the mysteries with Joel, who of course served as the physical catalyst for her spiritual awakening.

3 out of 5 stars disapointing- where'd the music go ???.......2007-05-28

i am a HUGE NX fan...
where's all the good music that originally aired in the show ?????
the music helped 'make' this series... (i think season 1 & 2 have most of all the original tunes)...
so why didn't they use the original music on these dvds ?
did they not get the permission to use all those great songs on these new discs ???
doesn't make sense to me at all...
VERY disappointing, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST Own.......2007-05-12

The Northern Exposure Third Season is a MUST addition to all the other seasons so far offered! My husband and I are and always have been the biggest Northern Exposure fans. In the years since it's been off the air we have found ourselves in conversations about NE in places like our dentist's office and grocery stores. That program had more facets and more wholesome story lines than nearly anything on television today! We have a frequent Cicily night at our house. (That's the fictional town where NE took place). Everyone should take this trip to CicilyNorthern Exposure - The Complete Sixth SeasonNorthern Exposure - The Complete First and Second SeasonsNorthern Exposure - The Complete Fifth Season, Alaska!

3 out of 5 stars A great show but bad DVD production quality.......2007-05-07

Northern Exposure is still one of my favorite hour long television shows over 10 years later. The writing, character development, and locations all add up to one entertaining, quirky, serious, and funny television show that might have you looking at things in a way you might not have thought possible. Its subtle and not in your face approach to philsophical ideas and how they relate to the many faces of humankind is something that many current writers, producers, and directors should pay attention to. I have to give the DVDs bad marks in regards to the rerelease production quality. In many of the segments, background music from the original airing has been replaced by muzak or songs that kind of sound like the original song musically but not lyrically. Special features such as deleted scenes have slowly disappeared from each successive season and have been shuffled around from the DVD in the set that has the episode upon it to the B-side of the last DVD in the set. This makes it difficult to watch related outtakes together with the associated episode without moving discs about. At least by season three, the episodes available on each DVD have been somewhat indicated on the packaging and not only by viewing the DVD on the television.

5 out of 5 stars Love Northern Exposure.......2007-06-11

It was great when it was on its first run on TV, and now, with the DVDs, it's wonderful to relive it. This show is so relaxing that it's the perfect thing to watch before bedtime.
Nobody in the cast is the 'bad guy,' with the possible exception of Maurice Minnifield's overblown ego, but even he isn't that annoying.....like Lenny & Squiggy on Laverne & Shirley, now those guys were repulsive.
I have all the DVDs of this show so far; can't wait for season 6 to be released!

Wish this series still existed. No blood and shootings. Just great characters and acting.

4 out of 5 stars still good.......2007-03-20

Well, the fourth season of this wonderful series still has some VERY good episodes. I particularly enjoyed the ones titled "revelations", "nothing's perfect" and "heroes". I think this is the last season that still maintains that very high level of quality to which we grew accustomed. This is also the last season in which the DVDs include not only deleted scenes but what they called in previous ones "unexposed footage", or the mistakes the actors made while filming. For NX fans, I think this one is still a must. Enjoy!!

2 out of 5 stars NEx Season 4 headache.......2007-03-09

Trying to save a buck, the manufactures of this set have released season 4 on double-sided DVDs, instead of on higher-quality single-sided ones. I can't play the B-side episodes on my DVD player, my mac laptop, nor on my friend's DVD player. Thanks for being cheap. (The other Northern Exposure series' DVDs I have received have been fine.) The episodes I CAN watch (A-side) are great, but that's hardly a consolation.

Description

This 7-time Emmy Award-winning series is a remarkable blend of quirky humor and heartwarming storytelling. With an ensemble cast including Rob Morrow (Quiz Show), John Corbett (TV's Sex and the City, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and the beautiful Janine Turner (Cliffhanger), Season Two takes us back to the slightly bizarre, yet charming, little logging town in Alaska. Relive the Complete Second Season of the show TV Guide calls "...one of television's truly fine series."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Second is superb, sensational, and downright sumptuous.......2007-03-28

I was very charmed by "Northern Exposure"'s first season, but I fell in love with its second. Over the period of a mere 7 episodes, I went from a fan to an addict. The 7-episode second season of "Northern Exposure" is far superior to a full 22-episode season of most other shows, and a flawless example of how to make great television. Season Two consists solely of delightful episodes, some of which are simply unforgettable. These include the season premiere, "Goodbye to All That", in which Joel (Rob Morrow) deals with a breakup from his longtime girlfriend in New York, who has decided to marry an elderly judge instead, and the season finale, "Slow Dance", in which the O'Connell curse strikes again when Rick (Grant Goodeve) is killed after a satellite falls from space and collides with him. Season Two makes the show's trademark dream sequences a regular aspect of each episode, and in its in this season that the characters begin to feel like family. That's thanks to creative (and absurd) storylines, quirky writing, and exquisite casting.

But enough about the show - I'm here to defend this DVD set. Since its release, Universal's "Complete Second Season" set has been lambasted for numerous reasons. For one thing, the packaging. Now this I don't understand at all. The parka packaging is the cutest, coolest TV-on-DVD packaging I have ever seen. I think it's a pity that they didn't continue with it beyond this season. The other complaint is the music replacement. All the original music from these episodes has been replaced. I can understand the fans' outrage over this. As I had never seen the episodes before watching this DVD, I wasn't bothered, but I appreciate the ill-feelings of those who had seen the episodes previously, and I am very displeased that Universal chose to release the episodes like this. However, I still think that this DVD release has been a little unfairly bashed, and although fans have good reason to be outraged, I would highly recommend this to those who enjoyed the first season but have never seen the episodes as they originally aired.

5 out of 5 stars Diehard Northern Exposure fan!!!.......2007-03-22

If your a die hard fan of this too short lived television series like I am then you will be glad you bought this. I am in the process of collecting all of the seasons. I just watched season one & two the past couple of days & I still get a kick out all the interesting & fun episodes. Yes... it's still interesting & a treat to watch. My children love the music. This series will always be my favorite. So will "Adam"!

If you love to laugh out loud...this is for you! And it's on two 2-sided disc in each dvd case inside it's very own sleeping bag!

5 out of 5 stars Irresistably quirky.......2007-02-09

First off, YES, this is only 7 episodes, so be aware.. and YES, the wonderful original music is altered and the end result not so satisfying...
But having said all that, this is still the wonderful series I remember - and it's irresistable.
The whole concept of the series comes into its own, making this a worthy second season... the characters are all so well realized and unbelievable, and yet unbelievably offbeat at the same time, and the sense of heightened realism is played into by the numerous dream sequences in this season.
Great fun of a type and caliber not around these days - newcomers and veterans alike will enjoy, despite the few number of episodes and the different music.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than season one!.......2007-01-10

I had forgotten what a great show this is. Season one is fantastic but season two you get to know the characters even better & the writers start taking more risks. The special features are fun too. I can't wait to order season three!

2 out of 5 stars Episode 7 missing from this DVD!.......2006-04-22

This grossly over-priced DVD set is clearly advertised as and labeled as The COMPLETE Second Season, but is missing Episode 7 (even though the title for it appears in the index). Instead, they substituted a program-length commercial for Battlestar Galactica, masquerading as a special feature.

The other reviews here have covered all of the other ways in which this DVD is very poorly done. Universal should be ashamed of themselves, fire the person(s) who managed this DVD project, and either refund the purchase price, or supply replacement discs which actually contain what the label and advertising claim: The *COMPLETE* second season

The town develops its own offbeat personality as well, a Mayberry-meets-Twin-Peaks blend of Native mysticism, Aurora Borealis-induced dreams, unlikely tales of long-lost family members, and rumors of a Bigfoot-like creature known simply as "Adam."

Northern Exposure provides a utopian escape--a place where life is interesting but never dangerous, everyone's insightful, the mystical becomes real, and nobody's burdened with a mundane 9-to-6 desk job. Cicely is a delightful place to visit, even if it's only for an hour at a time.

A mid-season replacement, season 1 consists of just eight episodes on two DVDs. Each episode includes 5-10 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes. --Shane Burnett

5 out of 5 stars Delightfully odd first season in an equally odd DVD package.......2007-03-09

The early 1990s saw a major public interest in the bizarrity of smalltown shows, clearly evidenced in three shows: TWIN PEAKS, PICKET FENCES, and NORTHERN EXPOSURE. Each was very different and completely unlike anything on television before or after. NORTHERN EXPOSURE was the lightest and most wacky of the bunch. The series revolved around Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), a young New Yorker fresh out of medical school. His tuition was paid by the state of Alaska, on the condition that Dr. Fleischman be stationed in Alaska after his graduation. Expecting to be positioned in Anchorage, Fleischman happily accepts. But to his immense dismay, he finds himself thrown into the middle of nowhere, also known as Cicely, Alaska, a town with a population of 215. At first Fleischman wants nothing more than to escape from the bizarre town and its even more bizarre inhabitants, but as time goes on he comes to appreciate the town and the individuals living there. Those individuals include cocky pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner), burly ex-NASA pilot and "owner" of the town Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin), amiable young aspiring filmmaker Ed (Darren E. Burrows), and peaceful early-morning radio DJ Chris Stevens (John Corbett).

NORTHERN EXPOSURE is a show like no other. The first season contains a mere 8 episodes, but is as charming as any series in history. The simplicity of life in Cicely, the beauty of the scenery, the companionship between the town's inhabitants, fills one with love and warmth, and was no doubt a major factor in what made the show so attractive to viewers when it debuted in 1990. The acting is wonderful all-around, the writing is witty and often absurd, and though the first season has not one dramatic scene, it's profoundly moving and irresistably enjoyable. For TWIN PEAKS fans like myself, I warn that NORTHERN EXPOSURE has little in common with that show, although the fifth episode of this season contains a very silly and funny spoof of it. Still I would highly recommend this show for anyone willing to try a new flavor of television.

As for the DVDs, the NORTHERN EXPOSURE sets are probably the most infamous TV DVDs ever released. On subsequent seasons, almost all music contained in the show was replaced with generic tunes (save for the theme). I personally find this despicable, but Universal has no intention of re-releasing the seasons with the original music at the moment. Season one, however, contains all the original music. The picture and sound quality are excellent, and the menus are very nice. It can be a little confusing to watch the series in order, however, as the first side of disc 1 actually contains the second batch of episodes, and the episodes are not numbered, nor is there any booklet for easy navigation through the season. I recommend tv.com for a chronological episode listing. Lastly, the packaging. Consumers have complained about the parka packaging used for the first two seasons, but I myself believe it is the most charming and wonderful TV-DVD packaging ever. I absolutely adore it, and I'm very sad that Universal did not continue doing this for the rest of the series. Nevertheless, this is a fine set, and it's better to have a lightly toyed-with release of the series than none whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT !!!.......2007-01-23

One of TV's smartest and most original series I've ever had the pleasure to watch. And owning it gives me FULL pleasure because now I get to watch the deleted scenes & the sleeping bag dvd cover with the moose zipper pull is a fantastic finishing touch & just shows their originality & playfulness until it's very end. My husband & I and even my children love to watch again & again. We still laugh out loud & enjoy every minute.

4 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure Season 1&2.......2006-08-23

This is one of the best TV shows ever created. The DVD's look and sound great. Much better than my VHS tapes with all of the recorded episodes. The ensemble cast really get their feet moving during the short 1st and 2nd seasons. You can actually feel the chemistry b/w Joel and Maggie and it starts to boil over onscreen. Such a great cast with exceptional writing.
The DVD's them selves are a little short on content. For one I was surprised to see only 8 episodes for season 1 and 7 for season 2. I bought the two seasons combined and still think there are some shows missing. There is plenty of lost footage and outtakes but nothing amazing to write about. You do a get a little insight from the actors by their outtakes. I was hoping for a little more just based on the quirkiness of the show.
Overall this is a great series to own and cherish. I would definitely look for on sales though. In my opinion $50 is a little much.

1 out of 5 stars Fantastic Show! just save money by buying the 1st and 2nd Season together .......2006-08-02

I love this show. I still laugh even though I've seen some of the episodes 3 times.

Just before you buy Season 1 alone, you should know that it's only 8 episodes.

And you'll save a lot of money if you buy the combination package of Season 1 and Season 2 together. All you get with season 1 by itself is the cool orange winter jacket that covers the package... Not really worth it unless your a collector of that stuff...

4 out of 5 stars 80s Childhood Memories.......2007-06-07

I ordered this DVD expecting a lot more than just 8 episodes, but it's better than nothing. If you grew up with the Snorks, you'll not remember how young the audience is supposed to be for this programme, but it's still enjoyable and nostalgic.

4 out of 5 stars Snorks Rule.......2007-04-11

I love the Snorks. I just never remembered what 'kid' type of cartoon they are. They are still cute though.

5 out of 5 stars Northern Exposure: intelligent TV with laughs and tears.......2007-01-09

I have read several reviews of the series and, as a devoted viewer during the series' run, I think the uproar of the lack of the original soundtrack music that laced each episode is a tempest in a teapot. The producers of these DVD's can be faulted, however, for not printing the disks with correct markings so we know which episodes are on the disks. They are mysteriously blank making it a real guessing game as to which disk to play, especially if you are trying to stay in the original sequence.
Other than that, this show was writing at its best with creative direction, faultless photography on location, and a fine ensemble cast. Filmed in the fictional Alaska town of Cicily without a laugh track or live audience on a sound stage, each script has stood the test of time with multiple stories taking place in each episode.
One particular episode is one of my favorites. The character, Ed, gave storekeeper Ruth Ann a mason jar of dirt for her birthday. It was from a grave site he bought for her. The end of the episode pays off Ed's heart-felt gift as he drives Ruth Ann to the site overlooking a magnificent river valley. She then askes Ed to be the first to "dance on the grave" with her. Tears from the viewer are guarenteed.
So, my fellow devotees, give up your angst over the original soundtrack and remember the scripts, the dialogue and performances for what they were: unforgotable and collectable.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunate Packaging.......2006-04-09

As with the Simpson's unfortunate "head" packaging gimmicks, there ought to be an option with Northern Exposure to opt out of the cutsie packaging and just go with a box. There are some of us out here who are interested in the content of what is offered - but completely disinterested in the "novelty" packaging that is more of a nuisance than a drawing point. What were the marketing people thinking?

It would be wonderful if, like the Simpson's products so inconveniently packaged, there was an option for a simple box.

When I found out these shows were on DVD I had to have them. My husband and I used to watch the series and enjoyed it very much. Now we are enjoying it all over again. I will be ordering the remaining series. I currently have 1-3.

5 out of 5 stars Classic TV At Its' Best.......2006-03-17

Northern exposure was great in the 90's and can hold its' own even today. Incredible ensemble cast and creative story lines (not to mention incredible writing) make this a collection must have. My husband and I are enjoying the episodes in chronological order and can't wait to purchase season 4.

4 out of 5 stars Brings back good memories........2006-03-12

The parka packs should appeal to those interested in novelty packaging, but the third series is in a very standard box. Disappointed to find that packages did not include any informational booklet or leaflet inside the DVD case. The double-sided disks use a labeling method that appears to be a growing trend of writing informaiotn on small bands near the hub. This is going to be a problem for those with "over 40" eyesight. The shows themselves are delightful, and the special features are fun to watch.

    Product Description

The Complete Seasons 1 through 4 of Northern Exposure. Stuffed with Bonus Features. Deleted scenes, extended scenes, unexposed footage and lost storylines. Joel Fleishman is fresh out of medical college, and fresh out of luck. Failing to read the fine print in his scholarship conditions, he finds he has no choice but to move to the remote and somewhat eccentric town of Cicely, in the wilds of Alaska. Once there, he is welcomed by the peculiar locals who are not keen to see him go, most especially Maurice Minnifield, the ex-NASA astronaut. Despite Joel's adamant denials, one gets the impression that he enjoys life in Cicely more than he admits.
