Wilkie Collins is hot. One of the most underrated Victorian mystery writers, Collins offers up eerie, evocative tales. While The Moonstone may be his best-known novel (it was made into a 1996 telefilm starring Sense and Sensibility's Greg Wise), The Woman in White is an equally affecting and engaging tale. A timeless gothic story, it is told from the perspective of Marian (Tara Fitzgerald), who's staying at a villa with her cousin Laura (Justine Waddell). The women become involved with a sympathetic painter and a slew of duplicitous aristocrats, including one played by James Wilby. Then there's that woman (who looks a lot like Laura), cloaked in white, who keeps running around the garden grounds at night. Fitzgerald is far too gorgeous to be the plain Marian, heroine of the novel, but costumers make a valiant--if unsuccessful--attempt to make her look dowdy and less attractive than Waddell. Fitzgerald is so lovely and likable that audiences are easily drawn into her predicament. Who is the mysterious woman in white? How and why has Laura disappeared? Simon Callow is particularly notable as the suave Count Fosco, who may or may not be who he seems to be. The Woman in White was made into a 1982 miniseries and five other film versions. Trivia note: Ian Richardson appears in both the 1982 version and this one. --N.F. Mendoza
Description
Set in the late 19th century, this adaptation of Wilkie Collins' mystery thriller is a slowly unraveling nightmare that reveals a dark world of powerful and dangerous men.

A young drawing master, Mr. Hartright (Andrew Lincoln), is hired by the fretful Mr. Fairlie (Ian Richardson) to teach his two nieces, Marian (Tara Fitzgerald) and Laura (Justine Waddell). On his way to their house, Hartright is startled by a mysterious encounter with a ghostly woman dressed in white.

When he meets Fairlie's nieces, he is struck by Laura's resemblance to the woman in white, and tells Marian and Laura of the ethereal woman. Determined to learn all they can about the woman in white, the girls find themselves drawn into a vortex of secrets, crime and treacherous involvement with the fascinating, but sinister, Count Fosco (Simon Callow).

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-06-29

At first, this seemed to be sort of like Everafter was to Cinderella, albeit on the dark side. The whole talking mirror could have been put down to post-partum psychosis combined with the shock of losing a child (and the ability to reproduce). When the actual magic comes into play, it is almost pointless, and I think the movie would have been better if the focus had been on the psychological rather than trying to squeeze in the supernatural.
That said, Sam Neill and Sigourney Weaver are wonderful. The rest of the cast ... not so much. I wasn't impressed with Lilli, Peter or the mildly-scarred hero.
If it weren't for Sigourney Weaver, this would be mediocre at best. It's worth watching for her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Snow White - A Tale of Terror.......2007-05-09

It's dark and has an interesting take on the classic story. Though the back story of Snow's love interest was lacking, it's still a keeper.

Snow's love interest ... I like to think that he was the son of a noble family, and his parents had opinions that others didn't agree with, which is why they were attacked.

5 out of 5 stars Sigourney rocks in Snow White.......2007-02-08

Snow White as it was meant to be. Signourney and Sam are at their best in this dark and scary rendition of Snow White. Not for the faint of heart.

Sigourney Weaver was PERFECT as the evil stepmother. You know this from the very start, when she is first introduced in the movie. No, it's not a fairytale for kiddies, but if you like horror - you will like this version.

4 out of 5 stars A grand Victorian gothic adventure, filled with madness, stratagems, love, graves and dark, dark woods.......2007-05-01

"The bad dreams always come back again like unwanted friends," says Marion Fairlie, who with her half-sister, Laura, lives in a vast mid-Victorian country estate. "And last night I found myself in Limmeridge churchyard. Normally, people who are dead stay dead, just as normally it is the criminals who are locked up rather than the victims. But then, there was nothing normal about what happened to us..." And we're off on a first-class gothic story of madness, deception and villainy, based on Wilkie Collins' great novel of Victorian mystery. It's a good idea to pay close attention, because there are plots within plots, yet they all center on a cunning and ruthless scheme which involves, what else, money, lots of money.

Marion Fairlie (Tara Fitzgerald) and her sister, Laura Fairlie (Justine Wadell) are devoted to each other. Marion is fierce and protective; Laura is softer and much more romantic. Marion has no money of her own; Laura will inherit riches when she comes of age. Marion has no marriage prospects that we know of; Laura has been pledged sometime ago to Sir Percival Glyde (James Wilby), an altogether too charming aristocrat. They are the wards of their uncle, a fussy, condescending, immensely self-centered hypochondriac (Ian Richardson). All seems to be quite routine, but then a young artist, Walter Hartright (Andrew Lincoln), is engaged to teach them drawing and artistic appreciation. And when he arrives at night to the local train station, there is no carriage, so off he sets out on foot to the estate. In the dark woods he encounters a strange woman, dressed all in white, wandering about and speaking of things he does not understand, who then disappears. Are we uneasy? Yes, and so is he and the sisters when they come to realize the strange woman looks much like Laura. Later, does love emerge between Walter and Laura? Does a bud bloom? Is there a misunderstanding that sends Walter away and results in Laura marrying Sir Percival? Does a canker gnaw? And do secrets slowly come to light about the relationships among Laura, Marian and the woman in white...do we learn to be deeply suspicious of Sir Percival's intentions...do we come to enjoy the style and manners of Sir Percival's close friend, Count Fosco (Simon Callow)...and do we eventually realize the foul depths of depravity, as well as the power of honor and true love, that humanity is capable of? Do we visit Victorian insane asylums, see falls from high towers, dig open graves in the middle of the night and watch retribution arrive amidst the roaring flames of a locked church?

Well, of course, and it's a grand journey for us.

This BBC/Masterpiece Theater program features fine acting and outstanding production values. To fit Collins' 500-plus-page novel into a television show of less than 120 minutes means a good deal had to be cut or abridged, and some changes were made most likely to achieve greater impact in the little time available. Still, taken on its own terms, the production of The Woman in White in my opinion works very well as a moody, romantic, dark television tale. Tara Fitzgerald as Marion gives a commanding performance as a woman determined to protect and then save her sister. James Wilby as Sir Percival manages the clever feat of slowly letting us see the depraved slime beneath the skin, who still has charm amidst the villainy. Ian Richardson as the young women's uncle almost steals the show. He gives such a bossy and pungent performance it almost unbalances the story every time he appears. Perhaps the weakest of the main parts is Simon Callow as Count Fosco. The Count is simply a monster, yet a supremely civilized and charming one. Collins described him as being of immense girth. Callow does a fine, mannered job of it, but to me he lacks a little of the monstrosity of evil.

At one point, Marian tells us, "My sister and I are so fond of Gothic novels, we sometimes act as if we were in them." Little did she know what was in store for herself and Laura.

The DVD transfer is fine although a little soft. There are no extras of any importance.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, as a minimalist synopsis of the novel.......2007-02-05

This is an excellent former Masterpiece Theatre presentation. At only two hours it takes on only the main plot thread of the lengthy original novel, which has been called the first English mystery novel. This two-hour version is fast-paced, suspenseful, atmospheric, and engrossing, but it is the "Cliffs Notes" version at best. The performances are convincing, the production seems high-budget, with many outdoor scenes and lovely costumes and sets. Go to the original novel for wonderful subplots and fascinating, intricate, pungent, detail.

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2006-12-06

I recently watched this movie after reading the exceptional novel by Wilkie Collins. I am not a purist. I realize that liberties must be taken when a book is converted to movie format. But this was downright ridiculous. When one must change the NAME of a main character just to fit in with their flawed storyline, that goes too far. Her name is Marian Halcombe, not Marian Fairlie. The brilliantly villainous Count Fosco is relegated to a simpering, unimaginative role. As for the plot, it is so far off from the actual story that they should have re-titled the movie. They have Hartwright involved in a scandal, they make Glyde into a sexual predator, and that's just the beginning of their perverse changes. If they had kept to the REAL plot, I think they could have pulled it off much better. Instead, they wasted time making characters who are nonexistent in the book into significant ones, and putting in scenes that changed the most fundamental parts of the story. There was absolutely no reason for any of the asinine changes they made. If I had watched this first, I would never have read the book, and I would have missed out on what is now one of my favorite novels. The book is a million times better. Don't bother with this movie--wait until there is a more faithful adaptation made (or the BBC gets smart and releases theirs on DVD.)

1 out of 5 stars Exceptionally poor - a better version exists.......2006-09-05

The 1998 version pales in comparison with the unavailable 1978/1982 BBC version with the exceptional Alan Badel as the evil Count Fosco. Beware purchasing this as the Ian Richardson version, because Ian Richardson was in both versions. If you must get a copy of "The Woman in White" right now, then order the 1998 version. Otherwise, write, e-mail, call, march and picket WGBH, BBC America and BBC England and lobby them to make the 1982 version available. The earlier version was produced in five 55 minute segments and was an oustanding piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Good Film-Noirish Type Film.......2006-04-26

I highly recommend this movie. Ignore the bad reviews. Perhaps those who have read the book hold a bad opinion of the movie. Most films could benefit from English subtitles, rather than closed captions. I wish WGBH Boston and Warner Brothers would take the hint, as sometimes the English are difficult to understand. They speak softer than Americans, and often the dialect is different as well.

Both of these films are intriguing British pieces. The Woman In White is perhaps slightly over-dramatized in this version, but the heart of the story is well captivated by the actors.

The Moonstone has long been a favorite mystery of mine, and this portrayal is rather brilliant.

It was a good purchase for those anglophiles that enjoy nothing better than a good British period movie.

2 out of 5 stars The Woman in White.......2007-02-01

The producer has taken artistic licence a little too far. Miss Halcombe was called Miss Fairlie. Why? The earlier BBC version was much better and accurate.

4 out of 5 stars The Abduction.......2006-03-23

I've seen a couple of movies of this genre and this one was one of the better. How a "crazed" cop can't let his successful working wife "go" and difficult it was for her to get the law inforcement to help her because he was a cop. Based on a true story.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Story.......2004-03-21

Came home late last night and flicked on the tv....this movie caught my eye and kept me on the edge of my seat. It had a strong, important message and is definetely worth your time!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Good film for Men also, not only Women.......2002-09-28

INfrequently (thank God !) we Men run into the (thankfully) *rare* "Lady* that _chooses_ to NON-ethically claw into a Man using the courts, etc., just-coz-she-wants-to-strike-at-him. May I haste to add that the MAJORITY of the Ladies out here among us guys would NEVER choose such a disgusting, illegal, UNethical course of action, just to get back at us. And _that_ is the perfect segue, at least as I see so, into my high praise of Victoria Principal and Robert Hays in THE ABDUCTION. May I please say how marvelously balanced, rational, and just and fair the illustration of the HORROR of us "Men" doing the OPPOSITE to the Love we *are* OBLIGED to demonstrate, perpetually, to Ladies is so well portrayed by Ms. Principal and Mr. Hays. A *must see* for EVERY Man *and* EVERY Woman. Guys, sit down with your Wives / Girl / Your Wife or Romance's Girls, and if what you see in THE ABDUCTION is YOU, please, get help ! It's NEVER too late !

5 out of 5 stars Victoria Principal & Robert Hays are very believable.......2002-05-12

Shocking and suspenseful movie about a stalker ex-husband who wants his ex-wife back...both physically and emotional. Victoria Principal is a victim overcoming the violence brought upon her by her ex-husband (who turns psycho and will go to any length to get her back). This kind of stuff is really going on...The movie is a good reminder of that.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, for a sequel..........2006-09-05

This movie actually wasn't all that bad.

Very similar story to the original.

The females are a lot better looking than the ones in the first film, that's for sure.

I thought this movie might be pretty horrid, but in all actuality, it is a pretty good film.

If you liked the first movie, I think you should give this one a try. It's worth owning especially if you have the original movie.

Good story, good acting, definitly a thriller.

Could have been much worse.

1 out of 5 stars Single White Female 2.........uuuhhhhhh.......2006-04-16

Holly played by Kristen Miller (She Spies, Man of the Year) has a nice career as a journalist with her friend played by Brooke Burns (Baywatch, Death of the Supermodels). The 2 of them fight over the owner of a restaurant named Zucas (I think thats close enough) runned by actor Tod Babcock (Guard Dogs, Poor White Trash). When Holly gets pissed off at her friend because she slept with Mr. Babcock she tries to find a new place to live and low and behold she finds a new shy roommate Tess, played by Allison Lange (The Hillside Strangler, Roswell). Holly becomes close to Tess and they seem to hit it off real well, until Holly finds out some things about Tess that makes her think that maybe this wasnt such a good idea. Well, in 1992, Jennifer Jason Leigh did this to Bridget Fonda and now they make a sequel about it, wow, they must of went threw tons of scripts just to get to this one. Pretty much the young girls on screen are eye candy and the acting is pretty bad plus the twists and thrills arent that great. This can go down with Basic Instinct 2....in the trash can or the skeet shoot, one of the two. Also starring Francois Giroday (Carpool Guy, Framed), Tracey McCall (Not Another Teen Movie, Second Degree), Rif Hutton (Osmosis Jones, Halfway Decent) and Kyme (School Daze, Geppetto).

2 out of 5 stars Of Course It Is Not a Sequel; It's a Remake, and Pretty Bad and Unnecessary One.......2006-04-10

So Sony did it again. This time it is `Single White Female 2.' Now I want to ask you seriously. Do we really need another version of `Single White Female'? Before you answer the question, take a look at the writers' name of the film Ross Helford and Andy Hurst, both responsible for `Wild Things 2' and `Wild Things: Diamonds in the Rough.'

`SWF2' is just another direct-to-video film with almost no redeeming points except as a reminder of the original `SWF' which was not a great film, but still far better a thriller than this one. Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh (especially the latter) were very good, and Barbet Schroeder almost made us forget the impossible story with his camera. No such things can be found in `Single White Female 2' in which all you can see is the similar story told in a slower and clumsier fashion.

Once again we are to meet a single white female (working for PR film in NYC) Holly (Kristen Miller) who starts to live with another single white female Tess (Alison Lange). It takes some time for the new roommate to find that she is living with a very unusual girl, who hates other people's lies but can wear someone's else dress without asking and go the seedy club named `SIN' (really). Who should she do? Live with her? Leave her? Apparently Holly doesn't know the right answer, doing stupid things one after another.

But before the film gets down to business as thriller, it has to show us so many thrill-free elements that only slow the pace: Holly's job and promotion, her unfaithful (and repentant) boyfriend; her back-biting co-worker who says `Sexual manipulation is my specialty"; and so on and on. As thriller the film fails to deliver, with the predictable path it follows, not-so-effective acting from the leads, and the poorly shot scenes that do not know how to convey the thrills even as cheap ones like gore. The film makes feeble attempt to engage our attention (here I'm talking about male audiences) with some images of the ladies in underwear in vain.

The original `SWF' was not without derivative script, but had several good moments like creepy character by Jennifer Jason Leigh and that high-heel. Though it is not terrible, everything is still bland and superficial in `SWF2.'

3 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THE CLASSIFIEDS.......2006-03-14

It's really not as bad as some of the other reviewers have indicated. Certainly it is derivative, and the acting is far from superior, but for a psycho roommate movie, it's passable. I must admit though that Kristen Miller's Holly is one of the stupidest people on screen, trying so hard to be everybody's friend and not smacking snidy Jan in the mouth a little more often, but hey she's the heroine. Allison Lange is the psycho, and doing her best Kirsten Dunst imitation, she is quite chilling. Brooke Barnes is perfect as the bitchy Jan, and Todd Babcock is efficient as the wayward David.
The movie's climax is admittedly under dramatic, and the ending a little ambiguous, but I have definitely seen worse.

1 out of 5 stars What a flop!.......2006-02-14

This movie was not as good as the first one at all! thought the plot was not good and the acting wasn't that good either.

2 out of 5 stars Mr D says two thumbs down!.......2005-11-11

The Adventures of Justine is a series of seven films, sold separately or sold together as a collection. At first glance, one may mistake The Adventures of Justine for one of those ubiquitous perky, adolescent TV shows. Lithe and lovely Justine (Daneen Boone) could easily be a Nancy Drew character and Professor Paul Robson (Timothy Dipri) seems to have been given an Indiana Jones persona. However, one realizes very soon that Justine's adventures are not so innocent.

Justine is a precocious teenage student and Professor Robson is a facility member at the Topacre Academy for gifted young girls. Justine along with several of the other girls are infatuated with the be-speckled but handsome Professor. Justine, who is ostensibly a virgin, and the Professor seem to get dragged into one international quest after another and while Justine manages, to her chagrin, (she desires to be de-flowered by the Professor) to remain innocent, her dreams and fantasies do not.

Justine and the Professor manage to get involved with a group of bad guys in each adventure, usually with Justine being captured but never violated, even while, people all around her, good and bad, are engaging in sex, which, by the way, Justine often watches.

Although Justine never physically takes part in any of the numerous sex scenes, she has a vivid imagination and occasionally gets seduced in one of her dreams. Her spunky roommate Ursula (Kimberly Rowe) and house mother, Madame Souvray (Jennifer Behr) are both sexually active and are often portrayed in simulated sex situations, as are the various nefarious ladies depicted in each film.

I had viewed several other films in the series before "In Heat of Passion", which by the way is the first of the seven films in the series. Although this is the first one, there isn't really anything that would let you know it precedes the others and therefore I would skip this one. While I enjoyed other movies in the series and rated them above average, I'm afraid that "In Heat of Passion" did not meet the standard of the next two films, "Object of my Desire" and "Midsummer Night". While the screenplay was somewhat corny on other Justine films, I'm afraid this one went way beyond cory past stpid and stopped at inane. The story follows three adventures, one in Egypt, one where a guy with the worst German accent I have ever heard kidnaps Justine and the third is in the Artic. NONE OF THESE EPISODES MAKES EVEN A SMIDGEN OF SENSE!

What`s Good
* Beautiful people, good casts
* Excellent bodies (male and female)
* Well done, though not overly suggestive sex scenes
* a bouncy, somewhat jocular quality

What's Bad
* poorly done, though not overly suggestive sex scenes
* Low budget and it shows
* ridiculous plots/stories
* Sex scenes seem sanitized (dispassionate)
* mediocre acting at best
* limited features

Conclusion

You're thinking, if the story was so bad, why not one star instead of two? Good question. Yes the plot is lame, really lame, example: Justine is standing half naked tied to a pole and the man and woman culprits, make fun of her because she's a virgin. They go on to say they are going to show her what she is missing, wherein they proceed to have sex, BEHIND HER, like she had eyes in the back of her head. This episode took place in the artic, where everyone but Justine is in heavy warm thermal clothing. Justine is wearing a night gown, but even though there are even more stupid scenes, the cast is attractive, a little cutesy and mildly sexy, so I gave it two stars.

4 out of 5 stars yeah, i liked it.......2002-07-12

If you are a fan of the female breast, you can't help but enjoy this film. There is plenty of gratuitous nudity, which is what you should expect from a movie like this. Don't try to find a plot, just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures of Daneen Boone.......2002-01-24

Cute little mini-series, kind of a "serious-comedy"; Adventures revolve around Justine a student at a private girls school and her Professor Robson. This is the 1st of the series and it introduces the main characters. Most of the short stories involve archeological and antiquities adventures. Plenty of nice nude sceens of Daneen and a few of her friends...

Professor Dennis Burke (Peter Coyote) wrote a sizzling erotic novel called Red Letters 20 years ago--but since then, his wife died from a protracted illness, and he's been fired from a job because of an affair with a student. So he's grateful to be given a second chance at a small California college where he lectures on Hawthorne... only all his students are more interested in Burke's writing than Hawthorne's. Burke starts receiving letters for the former resident of his apartment, letters that are from a woman in prison named Lydia (Nastassja Kinski of Your Friends and Neighbors) with a 30-year sentence for murder. Burke writes back, and their correspondence takes a turn for the intimate when she asks him to visit her. Burke isn't sure what he's getting into, and his life is only further complicated when the daughter of the college dean (Fairuza Balk, The Craft) starts making advances. Suddenly Lydia has escaped, his best friend (Jeremy Piven, Very Bad Things) is arrested for hacking into the prison computer system, and the dean suspects Burke of trifling with his daughter. Red Letters has all the makings of a classic Hitchcock film: a hapless hero who thinks he's smarter than he is, an unpredictable femme fatale, snaky plot twists, and an all-around excellent cast (also including Ernie Hudson from Ghostbusters and Udo Kier from My Own Private Idaho and The Kingdom). The movie loses focus at the very end, but until then it's a smart, well-written, subtle, and unpredictable film that actually gives its characters some depth and grit. Even the more implausible moments are fun and engaging. Well worth checking out. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars what a great cast.......2003-10-30

this movie sizzles with its great cast that spark and snap this thrilling, well thriller. Peter Coyote(Sphere) is a writer, Nastassja Kinski(Cold Heart, One Night Stand, Little Boy Blue and Cat People) is the one he writes to in prison and she meets him. Jeremy Piven(PCU, Judgment Night) is Coyotes friend, and Fairuza Balk(The Craft, The Island Of Dr. Moreau) is the girl infatuated with Coyote. the cast is great, no doubt, especially Piven(who is always great). you also got supporting cast members like Udo Kier(Blade, Barb Wire), Ernie Hudson(The Substitute, No Escape and Pauly Shore(In The Army Now, Son In Law). hang on

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underated.......2002-11-12

I started watching this movie with the assumpton that it was going to be very bad and not a good movie at all as I had heard from numerous other reviews and posts, etc. But I actually highly enjoyed this movie. It does have it's faults, yes, but still it is an entertaining movie to me and I think it could be to others too, if they would give it a chance. It does have a very low budget feel to it (not the faul of the director, Bradley Battersby, the music was changed without his permission and he was given only twenty days to shoot it or he would be fired) but these are all the fault of the producers who basically made everything that is cheesy about it that way. I have heard what the original plan for the movie was and that plan was very unique, but as mentioned above, it was not to be this way through not fault of anybody's except the producers. But again, a highy enjoyable movie with wonderful performances by Natassja Kinski and Peter Coyote (though he hams things up way too much). Good for a light laugh and some enjoyability.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly a waste of talent.......2001-03-11

Unfotunately, the talents of the cast are ill used. The story trys to be clever and sexually titallating, but mostly is just silly. The characters never seem real and the story less so. I am a big fan of both Ms. Kinski and Balk and wasting their talents in this tawdry thriller was very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars worth watching for one scene.......2001-02-06

the lenghty editorial review is accurate and recommends the film....I would agreee and add that there is a particular scene which is unusual....it involves a police line up with a witness and police on one side of the 1-way glass and the suspects on the other...I won't divulge what happens, but the film is worth seeing just for this surprise.

1 out of 5 stars Have Gone To Seed.......2000-03-29

A very disappointing film starring one of the better western actors. It is such a comedown for Richard Boone of the "Have Gun Will Travel" fame. Boone probably did this project because he needs the money or just becuase he needs to do something. The film is a pathethic and boring excuse for a western which is neither spaghetti or whatever. It is sad to see a legend like Boone to take on something trashy as this project. The blurry, fuzzy, and hazy picture quality is just as bad as the story. I don't recommend this to anyone including fans of Richard Boone.

Also in The Crow: City of Angels as Grace. I love her. She is best known for her role on the hit ABC TV show 7th Heaven as Lucy Camden. I love that show! Her real name is Beverley Mitchell.
