She eventually submits, but extracts her revenge and although she survives, those around her meet with tragic ends. We found ourselves replaying many scenes to savor the dramatic turns and the astute execution of the script by the cast. Dalton sustains believability as the frustrated king while accommodating the period costumes and props. Golino is captivating as the heroine, whose only mistake is to have loved her husband in a time and place where the affection had almost nothing to do with marriage. - Axel Corti directed this historical drama starring Timothy Dalton as King Vittorio Amadeo, a 17th-century Italian monarch who becomes obsessed with the wife of one of his courtiers (Valeria Golino).
