A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great movie with funny and scary scenes.......2007-03-25

i think this is a very cool movie. it has very scary scenes (like the scene with Antie and the scorpion-- almost made me cry...), and very funny scenes (like the one where the dog starts making rick spin on the rope-- that made me fall to the floor, it was so funny!!!)

all in all, i thought this was a very good movie. i give it a one million star rating!

4 out of 5 stars Rick Moranis's best film yet! besides Ghostbusters of course.......2007-02-10

In this film Joe johnson director makes a movie about kids getting shrunk and spend days in the backyard it seems like a jungle to them! And it shows a close up of what lives in the grass of the back or front yards! like they run into giant Ants, giants Squrpions, and giant bees + other things that seem small to us YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Also see these films Honey I blew up th kid & Honey we shrunk ourselves

5 out of 5 stars A Sci-Fi Adventure For The Whole Family.......2007-01-19

This movie has a cartoon proceeding it. Actually, the part of the film that is not suitable for children happens to be the cartoon (Roger Rabbit).

This was an excellent science fiction story. It was thrilling, and well written. There was one scene early in the movie that was forgotten, until a later scene, and then it sent chills down my spine knowing what was next.

I would highly recommend this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Full Screen is Better!.......2007-01-09

I have both full-screen (Zone 1) and wide-screen (UK) versions and have found that it(Zone 2) seems to be a fake widescreen. The black bars seem to crop upper and lower parts of the screen, on which left and right sides are not added at all.

Trust me, buy this one...

4 out of 5 stars Honey, You Gotta Buy This Movie .......2006-12-08

In this Disney classic (not exactly), Rick Moranis stars as a absent-minded professor (It's Disney, of course) who invents a shrinking machine
that he thinks will make him money, but instead, shrinks his kids!
Some of the characters/actors are fun, but Moranis sounds too dramatic
for his own good, though he does make up some funny lines and scenes along the way.

You film buffs should know:

This was actually filmed in Mexico (don't worry, you won't hear any
ranchera music in the process).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another good one.......2006-11-09

I guess you would consider this the sequel to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. I always did, at least.

I'm surprised more people haven't written a review for this great movie. If I remember correctly, I went to see Honey, I Blew Up the Kid when it first hit theaters. I enjoyed it then, and when I watched the movie again last year, I found out that I STILL enjoy it.

I agree that the movie should have had more characters involved instead of sticking to the main family (for the most part) but that's not really a big problem. The fact that the kid blows up and walks around doing some creative and amazing things positively makes this a great family movie, in my eyes. When the kid finally leaves the house so all the people can see him, this is when the plot really kicks in. Every bit as good as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

5 out of 5 stars WoW!.......2005-10-26

I love this movie, Ive always wanted to own this movie. I have the first one and now I feel my collection is complete. Thanks alot!

4 out of 5 stars that's a big baby.......2005-08-22

A little boy and his stuft animal rabbit got sapt with the machine by acident. At a time when the boy get's around anything electrical he will get bigger once he hit 50 feet he gotten out of the house by himself. When he walk into Las Vegas he reach 100 feet.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful follow up to the first.......2003-02-19

Usualy sequals to movies like this can really lack and leave a lot desired but this follow up to the hit "Honey I shrunk the Kids" is actualy a lot of fun and a nice change on the size changing themes that were developed in the first.

This movie realized that we probably saw enough of the shrinking and being lost in the backyard idea and decided to do the opposite. A few new characters were introduced in this movie to make things work. The most important being Wanyes new son Adam who is a 2 year old toddler and will be the focus of this latest instalment with the wacky inventor and his family. Wayne now is part of a big company who wants to use his size alteration invention for their own uses. The only problem is he can't get the growth part to work correctly. On a surprise visit to the lab with his two sons to do some extra work, 2 year old Adam accidently gets caught under the rays of the growth ray only to wind up growing very slowly over a long period of time. Before they can blink he has grown to over 100 feet tall and terrorizing
downtown Las Vegas. To make matters worse an evil partner in the company is trying to take control of things and wants the kid destroyed.

Its a fun story that really has a lot of creative moments like His other son and the babysitter getting captured by the giant and stuck in his shirt pocked for most of the movie. They make it look really realistic with the giant baby towering over some famous Las Vegas casinos and the crowd reacting pretty realisticly. Kinda like one of those silly Godzilla movies but still with a Disney charm to it. It has a great story and a good climax and everything seems to end up happily ever after. Its defintely a movie that all ages would enjoy, some may not like it more then the first but this one relies more on fewer characters and a focus of one huge character compared to a lot of small characters. So its a fair tradeoff I feel and worked well.

Unfortunatly though the movie has a few problems. One was that they totaly write out the daughter sending her to college, the neighbors too are not mentioned and they don't really show a lot in the way of the kid growing . He sorta just is one size one moment and bigger another. They could have done a little more with such things but those are minor problems.

Bottom line. If you are looking for a fun, carefree and family safe movie. This is the one for you. If you liked the first or any of the "Honey I..." movies this is a must get for the colection. You won't be disapointed.

Disney's 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh, penned in the 1920s by British storyteller A.A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney's original vision to develop the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a collection of the original Pooh shorts, "The Honey Tree," "The Blustery Day," and "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too." These storybooks are presented in seamless "chapters," narrated by the timeless Sebastian Cabot. The familiar musical score and original voices of Sterling Holloway as Pooh, and Paul Winchell as Tigger, cap this enchanting keepsake. (Ages 2 and up). --Lynn Gibson

5 out of 5 stars 30th Anniversary coming up this year.......2007-04-30

We first saw this movie in 1983 on videodisc - remember those? Our son was 2 years old. He loved it so much that in 2007, 24 years later, my husband and I can still quote huge chunks of dialog. "Pooh, did you do that?" "I don't think so." It is a fabulous piece of animation with a simple, cute story any 2-year-old (or parent) can easily understand and enjoy, yet it has enough of a story that a little older child won't mind watching it with a younger sibling. Highly recommended. We have this movie on VHS, and I will be upgrading to DVD and will continue to upgrade to new formats as the old ones become obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful Movie!.......2007-03-17

We start out in this great movie, where Pooh is thinking, it soon goes to the fun song and Pooh doing his " Stoutness Excersies, " after that he goes and looks for a snack, and finds hes out of honey, he says: " Oh bother, empty, just the sticky parts left. " So he goes out and finds a honey tree, he tries to climb it but a branch snaps and he falls to the ground. Then he goes to Christper, and covers himself in mud and flies up to the honey tree, but he grabs a handfull of bees and honey. His rear gets stuck and the hole and is soon flying down to the ground. Then he visits Rabiit, he eats so much honey he gets very fat and gets stuck in a hole. In the end he is stuck in a hive with alot of honey and the bees gone. There are three more great stories in his DVD, but I don't have time to say much about them. XDD ^-^ Buy it and find out for yourself!

I was able to buy a copy of the 25th anniversary edition DVD. If you can find it at a reasonable price it is worth it. I had not seen this film since it was originally released. The DVD is excellent with some great features. A classic for the whole family to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars SO MUCH FUN!!!.......2007-06-09

I love to dance, hate to do aerobics. I'm not comparing this DVD to other Bollywood workout DVDs, but it is FUN FUN FUN! I got this for Christmas a few years ago, and it was just one of the best presents I've ever gotten. I love learning the moves (which were pretty challenging) - you can just do flat hands instead of the harder hand positions she tells you to use. Then trying to work the harder hand positions in while you're doing the footwork keeps your mind off the fact that you're doing an aerobic workout. I felt so proud when I could do the beginner workout with the correct hand positions. It took me awhile to get there, but meanwhile just the beginner workout is a nice little 20 minute job - whether or not you're getting the hands just right.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2007-03-29

Half of the time they dance off beat, the music is intolerable and not bollywood at all!! (I suspect she is the one singing, poorly I may add)and I find naming a mudra "woof-woof" simply insulting.

4 out of 5 stars Great Workout.......2007-03-09

I have been interested in this style of dance for awhile, but I have never tried it before. This evercise DVD is an excellent starter for anyone, like me, that has an interest but doesn't know where to start!

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, Honey.......2007-02-04

Honey Kalaria seems like a sweet person, and she is really encouraging through the workout. Some of her descriptions of the hand movements ("woof-woof," for example) made them easier for me to remember. That was good! But other than that, I hated this DVD. I'm pretty sure that Ms. Kalaria and the ladies dancing with her couldn't actually hear the music that we hear through the DVD--I think the music was added later--so the beat of the dancing is not the beat of the music, and I can't handle that. Almost annoying as that is watching those poor backup dancers try not to trip on the thousands of throw pillows strewn about their workout area. They need more room! I really wanted to like this DVD but I couldn't make it happen.

Just to leave this on a more pleasant note: I loved to see fuller-figured women in a workout video, dancing and looking awesome. I wish more workout DVDs were like that.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2006-12-24

I didn't find the moves on this DVD difficult, but I only did the workout a couple of times. The first time I did it, I had mostly positive thoughts about it (probably I was paying more attention to getting the moves down), but the second and third times I realized how annoying Honey Kalaria is and that she often gets off beat (this in itself is frustrating). In the second part of the workout there is a lot of hopping movement, so if you have bad ankles or knees, beware. I let a friend borrow this DVD, and then decided that she could just keep it, as I know I wouldn't do the workout again.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Third Time is not as much of a Charm.......2005-11-09

Remember the funny movie "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," and the almost as funny "Honey, I Blew Up the Kid?" Well, this movie is much like those. Except in this movie there is a different wife. Oh; and there are kids missing. And now Wayne Szalinski's (Rick Moranis) brother Gordon (Stuart Pankin) has appeared. Perhaps this movie is not so much like those after all.

We quickly learn that a few things have changed for Wayne since last we visited him. The FDA has forbidden Wayne to use his shrinking machine on people. Wayne is in the process of sending his shrinking machine to the Smithsonian. Wayne and Gordon's wives are heading off to a vacation, leaving Wayne in Gordon in charge of the house.

All initially seems sort of well, except that Wayne wants to shrink a Tiki man that his wife wants to him to throw away. Predictably, something goes wrong and Wayne and Gordon are accidentally shrunk. Shortly thereafter the wives, realizing they forgot to leave medicine behind, return. Soon the wives are accidentally shrunk, and we are once again on a path for a few yucks and a few groans.

This movie is reasonably decent. Much of it seems somewhat of a retread. There are the usual moments of fear as the foursome run from a cockroach and help a daddy longlegs spider, more moments of fun in a ride on a toy car, a dip in the dip, a ride in a soap bubble, and more.

This direct-to-video movie has less imagination than the first two movies. The atmosphere of this 75 minute "full-length" feature is that of a made-for-tv movie. I did enjoy the movie, but I wish I had looked for it in a bargain bin somewhere rather than paying full price.

If you really liked the first two movies, you will likely enjoy this movie. If you cared little for the first two movies, you should avoid this one. Even if you think you might like it, the movie still feels like something made for the Disney channel. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars HARMLESS RETREAD.......2005-08-21

This direct to video entry in the one-time imaginative series is mildly entertaining, although it is little more than an adult retread of the original. This time Rick Moranis (with a new wife played by Eve Gordon and only one kid this time) shrinks himself, his wife and his brother (Stuart Pankin) and his wife, and they find themselves confronting a giant cockroach as their main enemy, and a cute daddy longlegs helps the mommies out. It's not all that inventive but I found myself chuckling every once in a while. Might entertain the younger set.

3 out of 5 stars 3rd (and final) in the series.......2002-10-24

Contrary to popular belief, this is not a new movie. Not at all. This is actually Disney's very first direct-to-video live action films, which was first released in 1997. It did not go over well and has long since been the hardest to find of the trio. Unlike the other two theatrical films, this movie was only ever released in full frame... so us widescreen enthusiasts have nothing to complain about here. What I can complain about is the overall cheap-feeling that this film has. Rick Moranis is the only original character, and the action does not have the epic, theatrical quality of the original films. This feels like a 2-day shoot soundstage production with a very closed-in feeling. It's kind of like taking the first five minutes of "Toy Story," with the army men on the staircase, etc. and extending that claustrophobic feeling for the 65-minute running time. All in all, this most compares to a typical Disney Channel Original Movie. In fact, it's been shown as one ever since its release!! Not exactly a Disney highpoint, collectors will want this third film to complete the collection...

This 1994 OAV was the first of several revivals of the 1973 TV series based on Go Nagai's manga stories. The characters are an assortment of familiar types. Diminutive, cartoony Grandfather Denbei appears alternately powerful and lecherous. Chokkei is the blushing teenage boy whose innocent charm earns him the protection of the buxom title character, the "lovely warrior" android who fights evil while losing her clothes with a frequency that would shock Little Annie Fannie. They're pitted against the demonic Dolmek and his hench-creatures who are trying to take over Cosplay City. But Honey proves more than a match for these nasty but ultimately ineffectual villains as she jiggles her way from victory to victory. New Cutey Honey embodies the "big eyes, big guns, big breasts" clichés that cause detractors to dismiss all Japanese animation--and send adolescent boys' pulses racing. Rated 17 Up: Nudity, violence, profanity. --Charles Solomon

Own it and watched it. It is awesome. I wish there would be more of the series coming out on dvd.

Es bastante comico, incluye comportamientos de Mazinger adaptados a los personajes de Cutey Honey, no podria ser mas que por Go Nagai.

Es bastante divertido

5 out of 5 stars old school anime.......2006-10-05

another film from way back. This film is like lite ecchi meaning it
gets kinky and even more kinky. Loads of viloence and nudity and even
self torture it's a film for the darkside of movie viewers. evil turns up
goes awawy and comes back even more sinister. it's a movie that pleases
you with how cool people or monsters can fight each other. Another hyper
violent romp in anime. the old school covers were better on vhs in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Fan-Service Galore.......2006-01-19

If you've read any of my previous reviews, then you know that I'm not a huge fan of fan-service. I think its shameless and I believe that animators use it to keep your attention while they struggle to keep the story going. This is why weaker anime can sometimes thrive, because it allures subconsciously to our more carnal section of our brains (philosophical, huh?). New Cutey Honey, however, isn't one of those anime. Fan-service dominates this series, but it runs parallel to the story, and is really meant to bring about laughs more than anything.

Honey is an android capable of changing into many different forms, all with their own special skills and uniforms. Unfortunately, that means she must end up in the buff for at least a few moments while the old uniforms shreds away for the new one to come. Though clearly shameless, it's usually funny because no matter how modest she attempts to be it just doesn't work. She must use a vast array of uniforms and skills in order to battle the evil Dolmeck, the man responsible for taking control of an entire city. Helping Honey is a young boy--who blushingly idolizes Honey--and his family, including the lecherous grandpa and the boy's criminal parents. When mixed together, it adds an interesting and unique cast.

Though filled with action and some drama, this is not a drama in any way. It's pure slapstick comedy from start to finish, never meant to be taken seriously. The animation quality is pretty high for an anime of that time, and Go Nagai, one of the legendary directors and animators, applies his well-known style. I'd recommend this to people who either enjoyed the original Cutey Honey series, are a fan of Go Nagai and his many anime, or like anime similar in design such as Golden Boy, then pick this up. Rated 17+, though, I would keep it away from children.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Anime for 12 and over.......2006-01-11

Cutie Honey is one of the best animes I have ever seen. It has truly captured that sexy Japanese sense of Humor. So if you love Anime you must buy Cutie Honey.

1 out of 5 stars One star because it did give a 0 option!.......2007-06-06

I am doing research on lesbian films. And so far I have been completely let down with only a few exceptions, the best exception so far is Saving Face, I will explain.

It has been my experience watching "lesbian" films that in some way, shape, or form a man is involved before woman proclaims her lesbianism or after, as in April Showers. I do not know ANY lesbian who would sleep with a man. Even in the highly proclaimed lesbian film Go Fish a "lesbian" sleeps with a man. Its a disgrace and an insult to imagine that any lesbian would sleep with a man.

I have nothing against men, I have several male friends. But this seems like a male propaganda in order to change the face of lesbianism into "just waiting for the man arrive."

What's worse, is that a woman film maker would even consider making a lesbian film where the lesbian sleeps with a man.

These films are shameful and should never be in teh same category as lesbian films. They should be with the bisexual films.

1 out of 5 stars too has been.......2007-04-12

Unfortunatly the bad (actors) actresses make us forget the interest of the subject : the coming out and the fun of some situations.

3 out of 5 stars I've seen better..........2007-01-29

I rented this movie, and I'm glad I didn't spend too much on the rental. It was cute, and entertaining enough, but as someone who buys plenty of DVDs, I wouldn't have purchased this one. It had its moments, though, and I enjoyed watching it once, even though plenty of parts of it don't really make sense.

1 out of 5 stars What a wate of my time.......2006-12-16

Look, I'm used to movies like "Better than chocolate", "Listen", "Gia", Monster, series like "The L word", real good lesbian stuff. When I got this movie thinking it was a good lesbian drama, I was completly dissapointed. Boring, unrealistic, stupid... do not waste your time/money. The real lesbian of the movie ends up with a guy, and the main characters were so boring! oh god! I still regret I watched it. Hey, if you wanna see a lesbian movie that has never been properly discovered, buy "Listen", it's only a VHS version, but it's hot, great lesbian thriller... reminds me of Basic Instinct but better.

1 out of 5 stars April's wet blanket.......2006-11-30

I appreciate the effort. I really do. Especially from a woman filmmaker on a tight budget. I applaud the movie for that reason only. 1 star for effort!

But, honestly, aren't there any decent scripts and actors out there? Isn't there anyone willing to invest money in lesbian films? We are STARVED for anything half way decent, and will shell out some bucks on Amazon to get it. But I refuse to part with hard earned cash for something on par with the very bad "Bar Girls," which describes this movie to a T.

Unfortunately, this film gets one star from me because (a) it was completely unbelievable, (b) the pacing was terrible, (c) the acting was energetic, but not in the right places, and (d) I was bored.

A MUCH better low budget/made by women film is "Kissing Jessica Stein." Even "Go Fish" gets points for style (and 2 stars from me, although it DID have worse acting). Back to the drawing board! And don't ask for my money until you have something at "It's in the Water"-level or better.

Jessica Alba swivels and pops her way to the top (or at least into Missy Elliot's heart) in hip-hop dance flick Honey. Honey Daniels (Alba, Dark Angel) dances in nightclubs; when she accidentally gets videotaped, a hip-hop video director spots her unique talent and hires her first as a dancer, then as a choreographer. But when he wants her body as much as her talent, how will she sustain her career? And how will this affect her dream of creating a dance studio for the local street kids? Honey is the usual Hollywood silliness, executed with sincerity but not much imagination. For some reason, Alba's sexy gyrations are supposed to be more empowering than other dancers' sexy gyrations, while being no less titillating. Featuring Mekhi Phifer, David Moscow, and cameos by hip-hop stars like Missy Elliot and Ginuwine. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars It's A Story That's Been Done One Too Many Times.......2007-03-18

The only thing that (somewhat) seperates this "beautiful star has good intentions for her 'people in the hood'" film is that the racial lines are clearly drawn and somewhat offending, somewhat comical.

We meet Honey Daniels, who is a Hip Hop Dance instructor at the Community Center by afternoon and a Bartender by night that uses her "after hours" at the club to show off her moves. And, as we all seen coming, she meets a video producer one night at the club who offers her the opportunity she's been waiting for: to choreograph and dance in a music video.

Things on going well until the produce (a goofy looking white boy) puts on the moves on Honey and she shoots him down. And, as expected, this same producer fires her, along with the 'hood kids she got dance parts for in the new video, and hires her dance-archenemy, Katrina.

Honey is so broken hearted; not about her loss, but the loss of those poor kids. So she decides to do something about it: she wants to open her own dance studio. Yet she lacks the funds to get off the ground.

Never one to be pessimistic, Honey devises a plan to raise the money: a dance benefit. She's out pumpin' the neighborhood for donations while, in the meantime, that silly, oversexed white boy of a producer is preparing to produce a new video for Missy Elliot. Elliot shoots the producer down when she finds out her video is going to be choreographed by Katrina (who Elliot describes as a thief of M.C. Hammer's moves) instead of Honey.

Just when Honey thinks she may have a tough go of raising the dough, that goofy lookin' boy pops up again and this time he's begging and pleading and apologizing to Honey trying to get her to come back to work for him. This time, she bursts his little bubble with a resounding "No!"

It's a story that has been done one too many times. As with all the rest, it was okay but will never be ranked as a favorite. I'd recommend it only when cable offers nothing else; you know, like when it's those wee morning hours and there's nothing but infomercials...that's a good time!

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad....just entertainment!.......2007-01-04

Don't get me wrong, I actually like this film, but aside from Mekhi Phifer and Joy Bryant's almost non-existent role this film is littered with some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Jessica Alba may be beautiful but she can't act to save her life (at least she can dance) and Lil' Romeo is one of the most annoying little actors/rappers I've ever seen. The story is sweet, even if it has been done a billion times, and the ending will make you smile but just don't expect this to be a movie you rave about. Like I said, I like this movie, I'll watch it...but I can't defend it because as far as Hollywood fluff goes, this is at the top of the list.

One of the main reasons this film falters is that it tries way to hard to be a serious film instead of embracing its mediocre generality and just being that same ol' same ol' slice of American entertainment. By trying to add that `the hood is a hard place' statement and the `do for others not for yourself' morale they end up making this film even more ridiculous and far-fetched than it is initially. It's entertainment, and not all entertainment has to deserve an Oscar. This is a fun way to pass the time, and Jessica moves real nice, so sit back and enjoy the mindless entertainment but don't expect to be see anything new or improved.

3 out of 5 stars Well-intentioned but silly film.......2006-10-29

I stumbled on this while channel-surfing and was pleasantly surprised. The ever sunny and optimistic Honey Daniels holds down two jobs in her increasingly hectic life - a bartender by night and a hip hop dance instructor by day. She has hopes of one day appearing in a music video, a dream that comes true when she catches the eye of a big time producer named Michael Ellis. Not only is Honey a smash in her first video appearance, but Michael immediately hires her as choreographer for one of his projects.
The movie wants to be taken seriously as a realistic view of urban life but very little of what we see ever rings true, starting with Honey herself who, with her invariably perky demeanor, seems like a cross between Little Mary Sunshine and Mother Teresa in form fitting jeans and matching halter top. Everything that happens to her - from her meteoric rise in the music video world to her purchase of an empty store for her new dance studio to the benefit performance she and her dancers stage to raise the money for the project - all come about way too easily and with virtually no noticeable effort on her part. We never believe for a moment that any of this would happen in this way in the real world.
Honey is really little more than an urban fairy tale, fine for children, I suppose, but not of much use for adults with a more pragmatic understanding of how life actually works.

3 out of 5 stars Watch it for Jess and that's about it.......2006-06-24

There are some good and slick moves no doubt but it pales when it comes to real dancing. Jessica looks pretty and hot but there are some silly little kids whom people are raving about particularly one kid whose move Jessica is supposed to have copied in one of her dance sequences in the movie (that's how the story goes). That was one sick lousy move and one that will make you cringe. Honestly that kid sucked. There are tons of kids on Mtv and other TV dance shows that will have your jaws dropping. Check it out for Jessica, otherwise this is no big "dance-movie". There's a sweet romance between Jess and her lover that is worth watching though. If you are looking for good drama and dance check out "Save the Last Dance".

Wanted to give just 2 stars.

Men of Honor presents a great role model for younger viewers, yet it's rated R due to abundant use of the F word. With appropriate discretion, parents should allow their preteen and teenaged children to see this rousing if altogether conventional biopic inspired by the life of Carl Brashear. Played with gravity and gumption by Cuba Gooding Jr., Brashear was the first African American to become a master diver in the U.S. Navy, despite the lingering effects of segregation, opposition from Navy brass, and the amputation of his left leg following a tragic on-duty accident. Robert De Niro adds marquee value and salty bluster as Billy Sunday, the drunken, redneck (and fictionalized) Master Chief who watches, with gradual admiration, as Brashear attains his ultimate goal through sheer force of will.

This is all quite uplifting on its surface, but in attempting to hit the requisite highlights of an inspiring biography, director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food) reduces Brashear's achievement to a succession of clichés, forcing Gooding and De Niro to battle sentiment with their noteworthy performances. As Sunday's neglected wife, Charlize Theron is completely extraneous; Hal Holbrook's diving-school commander is a ranting caricature; and newcomer Aunjanue Ellis barely registers as Brashear's wife (in part because their obligatory romance is handled with an utter lack of finesse). There's no question that Brashear's efforts are heroic and worthy of recognition, so Men of Honor serves its basic purpose. Still, one can't help but wonder if Brashear's story would be even more impressive with a more authentic treatment. --Jeff Shannon

Description

One of those rare films that grabs you by the gut and never lets go, Men of Honor was inspired by the life of Carl Brasher (Cuba Gooding Jr.), an African American who dared to dream of becoming a U.S. Navy Master Diver. Despite a bigoted training officer (Robert DeNiro) and a tragic shipboard accident, Carl never gives up and achieves the impossible in an incredible finish that will leave you cheering.

5 out of 5 stars There Should be More Movies Like This.......2007-03-22

I have seen some of these reviews and they couldn't be more wrong about this movie. Cuba Gooding Jr. does an excellent job playing the role of Carl Brashear. I like the fact that George Tillman brought to life a story about a great man who is widely overlooked in our history books. Robert Deniro put everything he had into Chief Sunday and then some. I have had this movie for years now and I keep watching it over and over. If you like biographies you need to buy this movie and even if you don't you will still love it.

1 out of 5 stars Honorably Courageous.......2007-01-09

Has everything: a remarkable true story of a determined hero and the love of family in making his accomplishment even more special. It makes you want to applaud his courage in many scenes, especially when he succeeds an incredibly painful test to stun his supervisory review board, winning their applaud as well. This is a don't miss story told by tremendous acting throughout...20 star performances! Thank you for sending me a copy. - Q

5 out of 5 stars What Mettle defines Honor?.......2006-11-22

I was really impressed by this film. This story takes place at a transitional time in history when men, real men, were measured by their mettle not their color. At least that was the way it was supposed to be. I really like this film. It's not flashy and has a good old-fashioned look and feel about it. Cuba Gooding Jr. enters the Navy with all good intentions but the lingering effects of a segregated military, even though recently abolished, weigh heavy on him. Military traditions good or bad are hard to break. Robert De Niro plays a Southern bigoted washed up Master Chief in charge of training at the U.S. Navy's diving school. Ordered by commanding officer Hal Holbrook to fail Gooding, De Niro begins to learn the real meaning of honor as shown by Gooding's determination and perseverance at insurmountable odds. Perhaps Gooding's conduct possibly rekindled in De Niro the recognition of those qualities that defined and are the very essence of honor in De Niro's burdened psyche. This film has much more to say than what seems apparent, but the images will linger with you.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring.......2006-07-26

This movie is a true inspiration. The man portrayed in this movie overcame oppression and a disability all in the service of the country he loved. Cuba Gooding Jr does a great job playing Carl M. Brashear, the first African American Naval Diver.

If you ever have the feeling that you want to quit or give up on something you should watch this film for inspiration.

Unfortunately, today, we lost this great man. I have attached the story from CNN below.

RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- Carl M. Brashear, the first black U.S. Navy diver who was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 2000 film "Men of Honor," died Tuesday. He was 75.

Brashear died at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth of respiratory and heart failure, the medical center said.

Brashear retired from the Navy in 1979 after more than 30 years of service. He was the first Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee, the result of a leg injury he sustained during a salvage operation.

"The African-American community lost a great leader today in Carl Brashear," Gooding said of the man he played alongside Robert DeNiro, who was Brashear's roughneck training officer in "Men of Honor." "His impact to us as a people and all races will be felt for many decades to come."

In 1966 Brashear was assigned to recover a hydrogen bomb that dropped into waters off of Spain when two U.S. Air Force planes collided.

During the mission Brashear was struck below his left knee by a pipe that the crew was using to hoist the bomb out of the water. Brashear was airlifted to a naval hospital where the bottom of his left leg was amputated to avoid gangrene. It later was replaced with a prosthetic leg.

The Navy was ready to retire Brashear from active duty, but he soon began a grueling training program that included diving, running and calisthenics.

"Sometimes I would come back from a run, and my artificial leg would have a puddle of blood from my stump. I wouldn't go to sick bay because they would have taken me out of the program," Brashear said in 2002 when he was inducted into the Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians. "Instead, I'd go hide somewhere and soak my leg in a bucket of hot water with salt in it -- that's an old remedy I learned growing up."

Brashear faced an uphill battle when he joined the Navy in 1948 at the age of 17, not long after the U.S. military desegregated.

"I went to the Army office, and they weren't too friendly," Brashear said in 2002. "But the Navy recruiter was a lot nicer. Looking back, I was placed in my calling."

Brashear, the son of poor sharecroppers in Sonora, Kentucky, quickly decided after boot camp that he wanted to become a deep-sea diver.

"Growing up on a farm in Kentucky, I always dreamed of doing something challenging," he said. "When I saw the divers for the first time, I knew it was just what I wanted."

In 1954 he was accepted and graduated from the diving program, despite daily battles with discrimination, including having hate notes left on his bunk.

He went on to train for advanced diving programs before his 1966 incident.

"He kept to himself personally, but his military life was an open book," said Junetta Brashear, his first wife, who lives in Portsmouth, Virginia, near Brashear's home in Virginia Beach.

She said Brashear's health started to deteriorate about three years ago, but that he had experienced problems ever since the amputation.

Brashear married childhood friend Junetta Wilcox in 1952 and had four children -- Shazanta, DaWayne, Phillip and Patrick -- before their divorce in 1978. He later married Hattie R. Elam and Jeanette A. Brundage.

1 out of 5 stars This film really is taking the mickey.......2006-02-17

In all honesty, this film is taking the mickey when it comes to the issue of egalitarianism in the armed forces. This is an issue that is very close to me as I have Asperger's syndrome (a condition on the autistic spectrum) and was rejected by the Army on account of this. However, I passed my Potential Officers Course yesterday, which is the first examination you have to do in order to gain entry to the Royal Marines. If an amputee were to try and become a Royal Marine Commando, I would think he was taking the mickey. This film serves to make a mockery of the issue of equal opportunities.
