Description
Winner and nominee at some of the most prestigious film festivals (such as Cannes, Goya Award, and the Miami Film Festival); Jaime Rosales' feature debut was widely praised for the ultra realism portrayed in the way he shows the life of an ordinary man transformed into unbridled madness. This fascinating example of realism from Spain is focused on the mundane life of Abel who lives with his mother in a small town in the outskirts of Barcelona. His whole life revolves around their small family business, his mother's house, his girlfriend's bed, the corner newsstand, and the neighborhood bars and cafés. It's always more of the same: the same old problems, same faces, and the same old conversations. As a result of this, his personality is weathered down until a new character is born without feelings or emotions who heed the call to kill without remorse. The abrupt and somewhat vicious change in the way Abel acts remains hidden under his pleasant, calm exterior, until something inexplicably cracks apart, leaving him powerless to stop it.

Disturbing.....unsatisfying ending........2005-10-03
Las Horas del Dia translates to The Hours of the Day. And here, a 30ish man in Spain lives those mundane hours of a day with nothing but time as it progresses and life loses its meaning.
Abel lives in a small town, runs a small clothing store with one employee, he has a girlfriend, and he lives with his mother.
To combat that mundane simpleness of his life, he starts to lose it all. The store is not doing well financially, he can't afford to give the employee what she deserves under an agreement when it closes; his girlfriend recognizes that life with him just doesn't cut it; he spitefully causes the loss of his best friend on the friend's wedding day; and, he is depressed.
And through it all, as tension mounts inside, he copes by randomly murdering the innocent. And with no fear or guilt, just as the hours of the day go by, his frightening simple life goes on.
During the movie, we keep hoping that this lost soul will do something inspirational, and we wait for him to get caught for the murders. And, the end will surprise you!......
What enhances this state of saddness is the lack of music or soundtrack. Simple as that, no music. .... MzRizz.
