Anyone who's watched just about any teenage film knows that the greatest evil in this world isn't chemical warfare, ethnic cleansing, or even the nuclear bomb. The worst crime known to man? Why, virginity, of course. As we've learned from countless films--from Summer of '42 to Risky Business--virginity is a criminal burden that one must shed oneself of as quickly as possible. And while many of these films have given the topic a bad name, American Pie quietly sweeps in and gives sex some of its dignity back. Dignity, you may say? How can a film that highlights intercourse with fruit pies, premature ejaculation broadcasted across the Internet, and the gratuitous "gross-out" shots restore the dignity of a genre that's been encumbered with such heavyweights as Porky's and Losin' It? The plot may be typical, with four high school friends swearing to "score" by prom, yet the film rises above the muck with its superior cast, successful and sweet humor, and some actually rather retro values about the meaning and importance of sex. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kaye Thomas make up the odd quartet of pals determined to woo, lie, and beg their way to manhood. The young women they pursue are wary girlfriend Vicky (Tara Reid), choir girl Heather (Mena Suvari), band geek Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and just about any other female who is willing and able. Natasha Lyonne as Jessica, playing a similar role as in Slums of Beverly Hills, is the general adviser to the crowd (when Vicky tells her "I want it to be the right time, the right place," Jessica responds, "It's not a space shuttle launch, it's sex"). The comedic timing hits the mark--especially in the deliberately awkward scenes between Jim (Biggs) and his father (Eugene Levy). And, of course, lessons are learned in this genuinely funny film, which will probably please the adult crowd even more than it will the teenage one. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars American Pie.......2007-03-17

Well I had all the other movies, but this makes my collection complete. This is the kind of movie you can watch over and over again and it never gets boring.

1 out of 5 stars Just so over-rated.......2007-02-23

This may be one of the most over-rated movies of the last 20 years. It is typical mindless skirt chasing by high school boys. How many times will this premise be used before people stop watching it?? Please god stop.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars so stupid it is funny.......2006-10-17

There are good movies and then there are movies like these that are just worth the price for the laugh factor. Yeah it does have a plot a pretty stupid one, but it is so funny. The second one is really funny too. are you trying not to watch things with sex in them or not your kids well do not watch this. this is full of sex references and inuendo. It is really funny and worth the laugh if you are like me and just are not offended.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant teenage romp!.......2006-08-08

American Pie is a favorite for those of you who like hillarious teenage movies.Jason Biggs plays Jim,an average American teen opening new worlds in his sex life. From encounters with pies to embarrasing moments with other teenage girls,American Pie is a definite favorite.Sean William Scott is wonderfull as Scott Stifler. You'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly touching for its genre.......2006-07-22

For a teen comedy flick with potty humour and "showcase" nudity, American Pie does really well with some coming of age themes. Four boys are on a quest to lose their virginity by prom night, and go to various lengths to impress the girls they meet. Life lessons are learned and the boys grow up in ways other than sexually. The four boys led by Jason Biggs are all likeable, and Seann William Scott had a breakout role as the party-loving fifth wheel to the group. Eugene Levy, one of great comedic alumnis from the 80s, has hilarious moments as Jim's dad. And for who can forget the Shannon Elizabeth scene and the bit with the movie's namesake?

Not a lot on the dvd, but there's a fun commentary with the staff and actors, though it's a bit crowded at times. American Pie's not a groundbreaking film, but it's a solid one for its genre, and may be one of the few really worth owning.

A disappointing second effort by writer/director/actor Eric Schaeffer, whose small first film, My Life's in Turnaround, showed great promise. This romantic comedy tries much, much too hard and feels more like a freshman production than a sophomore endeavor. The plot is all fluff and the dialogue is not only meaningless but often embarrassingly crude. Schaeffer and Sarah Jessica Parker have their moments as platonic roommates trying to find true love before their 30th birthdays. She suggests that if they do not find their soul mates within a month, they leap from the Brooklyn Bridge. Lots of scrambling for the perfect mate ensues, with much predictability. By the time the movie ends, you'll be willing to push them both. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-05-07

I love this movie. I have never talked to a man that like it though. If you are looking for a good girl movie then this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Funny and Entertaining!.......2007-04-24

I first saw this movie on the sundance channel. I thought it was sweet and hilariuos at times. A perfect role for Sarah Jessica Parker! I highly reccommend this film to anyone who loves "Sex and the City". Sit back, and get ready to laugh, because this film is a trip! Check out the very young Scarlet Johansen! I bought this on DVD and it is in my dvd player A LOT!

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is..........2005-09-19

Excellent cast in a movie that reflects life - sometimes humourous, sometimes disappointing, sometimes sad and sometimes strange.

Although Elle MacPherson cannot act, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller and Eric Schaeffer are convincing enough to take up the slack.

I agree with one of the other reviewers in that this is a consistently funny and touching film.

4 out of 5 stars Not nearly as bad as some people have said.......2004-12-18

Although this isn't the most polished movie, it is genuinely entertaining, and only someone not remotely interested in seeing a romantic comedy would give it 0-1 stars.

I can't remember why I first picked it up (I didn't see it in the theaters), but it is a consistently funny, touching film. I'm not a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker, Elle MacPherson (who I feel turns in the strangest, poorest performance of the bunch), or even Ben Stiller, but I think it's easy to identify with people so afraid to be in love, but so afraid not to be in a committed relationship.

All in all, it's a bunch of laughs, and kind of a relief to watch something that takes itself less seriously than some of the big-name romantic comedies that are put out today and fall flat.

4 out of 5 stars Great cast, but writing sometimes falls through the cracks.......2004-01-23

The casting here was excellent - Ben Stiller, Elle Macpherson, Sarah Jessica Parker were all great. In fact, I am convinced that Elle Macpherson can act because of the 3 movies I have now seen her in, she plays decidedly different people in each one. She is perfectly cast as Joe's dream woman. I found Eric Schaeffer's character the least appealing of the whole cast. Some of the jokes here are wildly funny. The audience is never given a clue that the Jane Lindquist character is only getting involved with Joe to indulge the fantasy world he had created of her. I thought it was odd that she enjoyed his voyeurism and then seemed honestly interested in him sexually, but was not interested in a relationship with him. Earlier her character makes a statement that the world makes too much of the sexually charged days in the beginning of relationships, people move on after that part is over and that a lasting relationship is what she wants. That part did not make sense. This could have been improved by some better writing and better character development. The humor here is what makes this worth watching.

I'm just another customer who was very disappointed to discover that my new DVD of this title (as well as the replacement DVD MPI sent me) had such appallingly bad audio (the actors sound as if they're speaking through wads of cotton). It's also worth noting that MPI's DVD of "Turn of the Screw" has the exact same problem. Beware!

The prolific Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Gabbeh) had one of his most visible international successes with this haunting, open-ended drama. Set (and shot) during the Taliban era, it follows an Afghani-Canadian woman as she attempts to enter Afghanistan in search of a despondent sister. Since it is illegal for a woman to travel alone, she must rely on the kindness--or curiosity--of strangers, including a scrappy boy and a mysterious American doctor. The woman playing the lead role had earlier contacted Makhmalbaf about a similar real-life search, which prompted him to write the screenplay. The director doesn't really tell her story so much as he unveils a way of life: in the desert, we meet land-mine victims, Red Cross volunteers caught in a Catch-22 world, and women smothered in head-to-foot burkas. The portrait is one of oppression, but also of people furiously trying to get by. --Robert Horton

2 out of 5 stars ill-conceived and overhyped.......2007-07-05

Kandahar is a film that I've been wanting to see for years. It became a "de rigueur" staple of the art-house cinema circuit following 9/11. I remember the long lines at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Houston, when the film was screened.

Obviously, this film has its fans, as evidenced by the glowing reviews on Amazon. I personally found it to be a sham. For starters, it is filmed documentary-style, but the plot is heavily scripted. I'm not saying this concept is flawed; it works in The Story of the Weeping Camel. But, in a film that deals with such serious topics as famine and land mines, it feels wholly out of place. Also, the English-language dialogue suffers from flat delivery. The protagonist seems phony; every potentially poignant moment is ruined by her deadpan method of speaking.

Visually, the film is stunning at times, especially when you see the wedding party march in the desert. The sea of burqas in contrasting colors (such as emerald, black, ochre yellow, peach, white, purple, etc.) is absolutely stunning. But the quality of the cinematography is not enough to rescue the flawed direction.

I imagine that the throngs of curious people who clamored to see the film left the cinema somewhat disappointed. I know I did, watching it on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Looking Behind the Veil.......2007-05-23

KANDAHAR, or THE SUN BEHIND THE MOON, is an interesting and provocative film. Though I felt that in some ways the movie was manipulative since it was narrated in English and not actually filmed in Afghanistan, I did learn much from it. However, it felt as though it was an "outsider's" view into the world of Afghan people told from the vantage point of someone who had escaped the Taliban's stronghold and resides in Canada now. Also, the director is from Iran. So, this, too, somehow takes away from the film's "true" perspective. To the film's credit, however, it delivers powerful images and a look at how sad and utterly devastated the landscape of a once-proud nation has become. It makes the more fortunate among us perhaps stop for a moment to treasure the small freedoms we take entirely for granted and realize that the people of Afghanistan deserve a chance for freedom too. It also leaves one with haunting questions: Will the Afghan people ever write love stories, romances, poems, songs after it seems that their world was entirely capsized and their hearts broken by the Taliban? Will women ever be able to live in anything but total fear there? What is going to happen to that country when the war is over and all the world's focus shifts away from them? For all its failures, the film does deliver us a postcard from a land most of us will never otherwise know and makes us feel the desire to understand and empathize with its people. Post-9/11, that is important and essential to the world's healing.

4 out of 5 stars An Alright Drama.......2007-04-10

It was interesting and beautiful. The acting looked like acting...this is not the documentary it looks like. If some of the performances had not occasionally distracted me into rembering I was watching a movie, I'd have given it 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Orientalism on demand.......2006-07-04

the movie directors in the ME, particularly Iranians, are responding to demands by the West for certain type of movies. They produce what is demanded from them; in turn, they receive awards. cultural industry empowers these demands; they are the ones who will ensure that such movies will be received the Western audiences and they are the ones who decide who is awarded. There is no single ME movie which depict the story of Western imperialism in the ME and then awarded for doing so. ME movies must show that ME women are in need of emancipation; ME cultures are presented as in need of getting civilized. civilization itself is presented in vertical sense; there is a civilization somewhere out there all MEasterners are expected to reach; yet, it was that same civilization that threw doll bombs on them. (no reference to who threw them doll bombs or who mined their country; who deprived them of education and knowledge. the West is represented by beautiful, blonde nurses, a nice American guy who just pretend to be a doctor and help them with his "everyday Western knowledge of medicine" in the midst of total ignorance, and the helicopters that threw on them fake legs. such a nice way to civilize!)
the story of Afghanistan is real. however, the movie does not render a fair job in reflecting the background of it. rather, it does an excellent job in meeting the cultural demand; in producing a product that can sell well.
the situation is miserable; but what caused such misery in Afghanistan? your answer after seeing the movie will be that it is Islam; it is that Islamic culture; that backward culture of those people with wonderful eyes. such a conclusion is strongly demanded in the absence of other factors. there is no single implying in the movie, a smallest reference, that Afghanistan has suffered centuries old imperialism at the hands of the British and then the Russian and now Americans who played their Great Game on the chessboard of Eurasia. There is a passage in the movie to the effect that somebody will come to liberate them. those imperialists came in the name of civilization; French did to Algeria, the British did to India; all in the name of bringing them civilization. It was White Man's Burden to do so. Yet Makhmalbaf needs more awards. he has to compete in the cultural circus and perform well for the pleasure of Western audiences, in order to continue to be in demand. you did a nice job, applauses; go on.
(anyone who is interested in cultural imperialism should read Foucault's works and Edward Said's Orientalism.)

5 out of 5 stars Life on the margins . . ........2006-04-21

A woman sets out to rescue her sister in the Afghan city of Kandahar and along the way meets the displaced persons of war, the refugees, the starving, and the walking wounded. The film focuses in particular on the women and children forced to survive under hostile conditions. Their marginal existence in the desert sands on the border of Iran and Afghanistan reflects their status within the Taliban-ruled country from which they live in exile. Even more dramatically, the film explores the plight of those who have lost limbs from land mines.

Particularly informative is the commentary by actress Nelofer Pazira that is included on the DVD. Her comments reveal in eloquent detail not only the making of the movie (shot where it takes place) but the rationale behind the creative choices made, often on the fly, as the film crew worked under difficult and dangerous conditions. While western news coverage continues to focus on the military and political aspects of warfare in the Middle East, "Kandahar" does much to reveal the devastating impact on noncombatants. Definitely worth seeing.

2 out of 5 stars Harsh judgement against Applegate's Character.......2007-06-30

I saw this movie on Cable in a motel room in Chicago and I really felt for Applegate's Character. I thought back to the time I visited Joshua Tree and about my personal relationship with a man with a serious substance abuse problem. I did stay in the Gram Parson's death room at the Joshua Tree Inn about 10 years ago, and I feel a certain connection to him in a way. When I saw this film, I just thought how terrible the woman Applegate's character is based upon must feel if she were ever to see this film. Gram Parsons basically killed himself. If you haven't lived with and loved an alcoholic or drug addict, you have no idea how this woman felt or would have reacted to his death. Of course she's going to be angry, what kind of person dies like that? He drove out to the middle of the desert and overdosed. He was alone in a hotel room, and he killed himself with substances. Sure, he was a great song writer, but come on, I'm sure he wasn't perfect, he wasn't a saint. You people don't know what it's like to fight for someone with an addiction. You people don't know what it's like to fight every day to make this person whom you love stop using drugs, stop drinking and want to live. To BLAME Applegate's character in the end, was just a low blow. Who are you to make that kind of assumption? That Parsons killed himself to get away from her? Maybe he had his own demons that Applegate's character didn't have any control over. Who are you to accuse her and that she had any influence in his death? You write this screenplay and make her responsible for his death, in the end. He killed himself. Maybe he was beating her, there are several different types of abuse, mental, physical, emotional, sexual... did you ever think of that? Maybe Applegate's character had been abused beyond her limit of tolerance. Maybe he was too insane to live... and his death was the final blow. Death was so easy for him and he left behind a cross for her to bear. Maybe she was just trying to save him, and after his death she had a normal reaction of anger and frustration. Even in the synopsis of this film they call her "Betty (Applegate) the psycho exgirlfriend"...living with a drug addict makes you psycho...that's not fair. What misogynist wrote that discription? To the screenwriter... were you there? Did you witness private moments between the two of them? How dare you say she would be responsible for his suicide. Do you have any idea what it's like to pick up the pieces after something like that happens? His death was a selfish, careless, loveless act. It was his choice, in the end. To include that line at the end, about how he did what he did to get away from Applegate's character did a disservice to all women involved with men with substance abuse problems. That line adds insult to injury. Maybe she was in for the long haul and he was a black hole and maybe she was just trying to pull herself out of the pit he dragged her into. Unless you lived her life, you have NO RIGHT to make that accusation against her. It doesn't help that he was famous and people sing his praises and basically forget that he had a substance problem. He killed himself, she had nothing to do with it... no one is defending her and the screenwriter should feel ashamed.

2 out of 5 stars Original story lost in lousy movie.......2006-07-17

Recently I purchased Gram Parsons' Complete Reprise Session, which is great, and then heard that a movie had been made about his terrible death. What I ended up with is this junk. I give it two stars because of its attempt, albeit feeble, to tell the Parsons' corpse theft story. I don't give it any more stars because it is a bad movie -- lousy acting, stupid script. I haven't felt this sick since watching Forrest Gump.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst, most needlessly inaccurate - EVER........2006-06-22

The original story is so grand and rich - WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO TAKE LIBERTIES WITH IT?
This is seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen, subject matter aside. The details are useslessly misarranged and the cast performance is simply garbage. Garbage.
Don't bother. Don't buy.
From a non-fan's p.o.v., there's nothing interesting about it, aside from the fact that you know it's BASED on a true story. If you can get past the vomit-inducing laziness of the production go read the real story and you will ask yourself "why didn't they just directly shoot from this?"

2 out of 5 stars Not too grand, not really a theft, and not a lot of parsons.......2006-01-30

If you're a fan of Johnny Knoxville (whoever he is), then wild horses couldn't drag you away from this movie. If you're a Gram Parsons fan, particularly in the elderly set, this movie is likely to give you the deep blues. I was really excited to see that someone attempted to tell this weird tale of comradeship, love, and stupidity, and I hope that Phil Kaufmann earned a few bucks from it. Sadly, the movie just doesn't make it, whether as a buddy movie, as a comedy-drama, or as a tale of weirdness. The actors seem to be giving it an earnest effort, but the script is just so stiff (no pun intended) that no one could have carried it off effectively. The movie fails to shed much light on Gram Parsons, who, contrary to the film's depiction, was largely unknown to the masses at the time of his death (the Byrds' Sweetheart album was a commercial disappointment; the Burrito albums were commercial disasters; Gram's own first album was already in the cut-out bins when I bought it for $2 in early summer 1973. His death created some anticipation for his second solo album, but essentially no one bought it at the time. If you don't believe me, look at the Billboard charts, where it hardly measured in the top 200 LPs! Gram's legend would come later, thanks to large measure to Emmy Lou Harris' devotion). The film is success, however, in revealing that Parsons commanded an immense amount of respect from his friends and colleagues. One hopes that someone else tries to tackle this compelling story sometime in the future, hopefully with a better script and a stronger vision.

5 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2006-01-27

I watched this movie cause of Johnny Knoxville, I didn't even know there was a Gram Parsons. That shouldn't matter since this movie made me aware of him, but the movie and acting was great. I loved the hippie, gonna have to go back and watch some movies with Michael Shannon in it. And, you shouldn't judge Johnny Knoxville because of what he has done in the past, he was cast great in this movie. The only problem I had with it was Christina Applegate, but thats cause I don't really care for her since Married with Children, she will always be known as Kelly Bundy to me. Marley Shelton was also great in this movie, she needs to be more known than her teeny bopper type roles they cast her in. Overall, this was a great movie to watch, whether you knew who Gram Parsons was.

An adaptation of the Christopher Marlowe masterpiece, Doctor Faustus allows Richard Burton (who also co-directed) to sink his teeth into one of the great theater roles, with loyal wife Elizabeth Taylor along for the ride. Now, there were a few good movies and many follies born of the epic marriage of Burton and Taylor; Faustus is one of their most curious progeny. Alas, Burton's performance is hardly scaled back from a big, bellowing stage turn, while elsewhere the film fails to work up the most rudimentary cinematic life. And Liz? She keeps appearing, wordlessly, as a sexed-up dream temptation for poor Faustus, and finally as Helen of Troy, of "Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?" fame. The only real fun to be had here is wondering whether Burton saw the project as a metaphor for his own career: a man who sold his soul in return for earthly pleasures... as embodied by Elizabeth Taylor. --Robert Horton

Description

The legend of Doctor Faustus is the immortal tale of a German conjurer who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a life of adventure and excitement. Richard Burton stars as the aging scholar who makes a deal with the devil for youth, knowledge, and a dazzling mistress. Taylor plays the spellbinding seductress who seals Faustus' fate. Stars Academy Award® nominee Richard Burton and Academy Award® winner Elizabeth Taylor.

2 out of 5 stars Certainly Not One of Burton and Taylor's Best.......2007-01-14

This movie adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's DOCTOR FAUSTUS was panned by the critics in 1968 when it was released as well it should have been. I haven't seen it since then and find it much worse than I remembered. Not much works very well here. In parts of the film, particularly at the beginning, Richard Burton looks for all the world like the Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as he bellows forth. Elizabeth Taylor floats in and out of the scenes, sometimes as a redhead, at other times a blonde and once she appears to be painted silver from head to toe much like the street mimes in European cities. Of course she finally makes her entrance as the beautiful Helen of Troy, causing Faustus to utter the immortal lines, "Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?" The special effects leave much to be desired. Skulls talk and much of the sets look like a Halloween haunted house. Since Burton co-directed this film, he must be responsible in large part for the finished product.

On a positive note, Andreas Teuber turns in a good performance as Mephistoopheles. Unfortunately his acting, along with the words of the great playwright Christopher Marlowe, is not enough to save this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Ripe For Rediscovery........2006-07-04

Back in 1967 when this film was first released, critics jumped all over it as just a Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor vanity project which it was but that's all they saw. Now that Dick and Liz have been supplanted by Tom and Katie and Brad and Angelina the film is ripe for rediscovery and there is much to discover here. The beauty of Christopher Marlowe's play lies in the poetry of the lines and the philosophical and theological points the playwright raises. This Oxford University production which Burton co-directed captures its stage origins but is cleverly opened up in a number of ways which turn it into a fascinating cinematic experience thanks to an imaginative use of lighting, beautiful cinematography, and a haunting musical score by Mario Nascimbene (ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.). And then there is Richard Burton. His intense portrayal of the title character is a joy to behold and serves as a vivid reminder of just what a charismatic performer he was. His glorious voice speaks the Elizabethan text as if it were everyday conversation but with a power and conviction that must be heard to be believed and thanks to the optional DVD subtitles you can follow along as he speaks if you wish. The rest of the cast is made up of members of the Oxford Dramatic Society and they fufill the other roles satisfactorily with Andreas Teuber an absolute standout as a melancholy Mephistopheles. Last but not least there is Elizabeth Taylor. She is required to do nothing more than look beautiful in various guises (she has no dialogue) but she makes her presence felt throughout considering how beautiful she was back then. Chances are no one will redo Marlowe's play on film anytime soon and so there is even more reason to celebrate this version which clearly shows what the play has to offer as a great precursor to Shakespeare and how to make a major film on a minor budget.

5 out of 5 stars Richard the Great.......2006-06-28

This film is a great showcase of the amazing acting talent of the Immortal Richard Burton. What better material than the great Christopher Marlowe, the one who paved the way for Shakespeare for Richard Burton to flex his immense acting power and to speak what poetry in such a beautiful and mighty voice?

The first time I saw this film, I was mesmerized. I had already known of the greatness of Richard Burton with my viewing of The Spy who came in from the Cold but when I saw this film, I was entirely convinced of the fact that Richard Burton is up there with Laurence Olivier, and beyond? Possibly.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting adaptation of Marlowe's play.......2006-06-25

This 1967 film of Christipher Marlowe's play is quite good. Richard Burton is very convincing in the role of Faustus, a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for power, wealth, and knowledge. Elizabeth Taylor appears briefly several times as Helen of Troy and other characters, but she does not even speak except for her laughing at the end. Burton contributes much more with his fine acting and delivery of great lines from the play such as "Is the face that launched a thousand ships and burnt the topless towers of Illium?" Was Liz Taylor as Helen really that beautiful? I guess that's for her admirers to decide. The film's music is also haunting and moving. All of the great acting and sombre atmosphere help to make up for the movie's being limited almost entirely to a simple stage and inexpensive props.

The DVD has fairly good sound and picture quality, although it doesn't seem that any restoration was done to the film. Trailers from other movies were included but unfortunately no material directly related to this film. The DVD that I purchased was in full screen (despite it being advertised as widescreen), but I am happy with this because my TV screen is the regular size.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster - should have been so much better!.......2006-05-02

If it was not for the stellar performance of Richard Burton this movie would be worthless. He rants and raves and practically chews up the scenery while the support cast is boring and dull. If the cast was working up to Burton's level this movie would be STUNNING! If the cast was as exciting as Taylor's bust - prominently displayed on her every entrance - the movie would be spectacular! Unfortunately, it has all the spontaneity of a bad senior class play.

Somewhere in the English countryside a nihilistic biker (Nicky Henson) decides to make the name of his violent motorcycle gang ("The Living Dead") more than just a slogan. With the help of his dear old mum (Beryl Reid), who just happens to be a frog-worshipping occultist, he dives to his death only to leap out of his grave (still astride his motorcycle) like a black leather bat out of hell. This is one young rebel who makes the dictum "Live hard, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse" a reality. Soon he's recruiting for his undead biker army. ("Oh man, what are we waiting for?!" exclaims a restless gang member before driving headlong into a truck.) This zombie version of The Wild Angels is less horror film than biker nightmare, and Don Sharp, a former Hammer horror director, doesn't quite know how to straddle the line. The obscure supernatural elements feel creaky next to the restless violence of the rebels without a pulse and their sadistic reign of terror. Though he revels in gallows humor (the gang's "extreme sports" suicide montage is ghoulishly hilarious), Sharp never lets it descend into camp--though at times perhaps he should have. It's an inventive if not altogether successful genre mix highlighted with a sardonic turn by George Sanders as a shady servant who seems completely bemused by the entire spectacle. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Psychomania.......2007-01-04

This movie is a blast- 1970's motorcycle movie with a horror twist. Acadamy Award winner it isn't, but a lot of fun. One scene was an inspiration to the band Motorhead for their "Ace Of Spades" video (cemetery scene). A few friends and I saw this film in @1981 on a late-night local station and talked about it for years and I was very happy to get my hands on a few copies. Only one scene could I say was out of place (making the anti-hero main character look like the picked-on outcast) with a stupid song, but hey, what do you want for a 1970's English motorcycle horror "B" movie??? Buy it and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars "It's not me that scares you...it's the world.".......2006-11-22

From Elite Entertainment's Euroshock Collection comes the film Psychomania (1971) aka The Death Wheelers, a curious feature that followed the tail end of the motorcycle genre popularized in the mid to late 1960s (Amazon indicates the film released in 1974, but I suspect that was when it was released in America, as I believe it was originally released in England in 1971). Directed by Australian Don Sharp (The Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Fly, The Face of Fu Manchu), the film features Nicky Henson (Vampira), whom fans of the British television series "Fawlty Towers" will most likely recognize given he was prominently featured in a 1979 episode titled `The Psychiatrist' as the character Mr. Johnson (he played a swinger of sorts who snuck a chippie into Basil's hotel claiming it was his mother). Also appearing is Mary Larkin (The Razor's Edge), Ann Michelle (House of Whipcord), Robert `Cornelius Fudge' Hardy (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Beryl Reid (Dr. Phibes Rises Again), and George Sanders (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, A Shot in the Dark). Appearing in a bit part is John Levene, best known to `Dr. Who' fans as the character Corporal/Sergeant/RSM Benton from the long running series.

The film opens with a groovy, instrumental tune played against a slow motion motorcycle montage used as a backdrop for the opening credits. After this we meet a young mop head named Tom (Henson), the anarchistic, death obsessed leader of a coed motorcycle gang known as The Living Dead. Members of the gang include Tom's main squeeze Abby (Larkin), Jane (Michelle), Hatchet, Chopped Meat, Hinky, Bertram, and one or two others. Learning their names wasn't difficult, especially since they're spelled out in large letters upon their jackets, which, I must say, made them seem about as threatening as that gang of hoods Ritchie Cunnigham and his friends crossed in the television show "Happy Days", and needed the Fonz to save their cheese by the end episode. Anyway, Tom has gotten the notion it's possible to come back from the great beyond, most likely from his mother Mrs. Latham (Reid), who holds séances, and her butler Shadwell (Sanders), who appears exceptionally well versed in all things occult. Turns out there is a way, and it somehow involves a mysterious, locked room in Mrs. Latham's house, the same room Tom's father had ventured into some eighteen years earlier and never returned (um, okay). Tom enters the room and some weirdness follows involving a smoky mirror, some visions, and a...frog. The next day Tom and his cohorts set out to blow some minds, eventually leading up to a chase with the police and Tom launching himself off a bridge and ending up all dead and such...or is he? Apparently not, as a few days later, after a unorthodox memorial service, Tom rises from the dead with some strange, new powers, and is now intent on sharing the secret of his return with his friends as you see, once you die, you can't die again...

This was definitely one of the more peculiar films I've seen in a while, and I suppose that's probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did...from the outset there's difficulty in seeing where the story is going as the path is often muddled and frustratingly indistinct at times, and often open to a good deal of interpretation (I'm still in the dark with regards to the aspects of the story involving the frog). The film is listed in the horror genre, but one should know there's absolutely no blood and very little violence, although quite a few people do die throughout the feature (most all of the deaths are of the off screen variety). My favorite part of the film comes after Tom returns and starts convincing his friends to kill themselves (and they do, in various ways), if only so that they may share in the benefits acquired once one returns from the beyond. I won't detail the secret provided in the film of how to return from the dead, but know it doesn't seem all that difficult as long as you have a certain amount of faith. While the story does involve characters returning from the dead, this doesn't involve them becoming flesh eating zombies or anything like that. The characters are as they were before they passed, only now they seem to have a great deal more strength and lack any of the fears they possessed while living. Another great bit comes as Tom's friends, after his death, request from his mother to bury him in their own fashion, one that includes digging a hole in a field and placing Tom, atop his motorcycle, in full motorcycle gear, into the ground (this, of course, sets up a memorable bit once Tom returns from the dead and blasts his way out of the ground on his motorcycle). As far as the performances go there really wasn't much there, but in terms of a film like this they capable. A note of interest... George Sanders, who appeared in this film, took his own life about a year after the film was released, but, unlike the characters in this film, he did not come back (as far as I know), so either he didn't follow the path detailed in the film, or maybe he did and it just didn't work, you know, because this is just a movie. All in all I thought this a fun film, but then I'm partial to oddball features from the 1970s.

Seems there's a couple of DVD releases out there for this film, but the one I own is the Image Entertainment release, which appears to be out of print at the time of this review. The picture, presented in the original theatrical ratio of 1.66:1, looks decent enough, but minor signs of age are present from time to time. The clarity of the picture looks slightly dingy, but I've seen a lot worse. The Dolby Digital mono audio, available in both English and Spanish, comes across well. There are absolutely no extras on the disc, but chapter stops are provided. There's another, inexpensive DVD release out there from a company by the name of Geneon [Pioneer], but I haven't seen that release so I can't comment on the quality, but I suspect it probably isn't as good.

5 out of 5 stars Cult movie with an awesome soundtrack!.......2006-11-01

This film is one of my all-time favorites... There's just something about it that's so deliciously kooky it's completely priceless. It's the very definition of a cult film - it's certainly not for everyone, but those who love it love it with a passion. For me, it's part of a small group of films (including the likes of 'The Abominable Dr Phibes', 'The Omega Man', and the 'The Asphyx') that I saw on late-night TV many years ago and have loved ever since.

It's a virtually bloodless, blackly comic journey into the bizarre that concerns the leader of a gang of bikers - prophetically named The Living Dead - who discovers that the secret of eternal life is to commit suicide in a state of mind of absolute conviction that you will return. Once a couple of members of the gang pull this trick off, and quite literally become the living dead, the rest of the gang kiss their doubts (and their mortality) goodbye in a suicide free-for-all that's as amusing as it is inventive.

Throw in black magic, frog-worship, stone circles, Beryl Reid (!), an undead biker leaping from the grave bike and all, and the devil himself ... and you have the ingredients of a film like no other that's a genuine-article cult item.

And finally, there's the soundtrack - an unforgettable dose of psychedelia without which the film just wouldn't be same and might even not work at all, it's that integral to the atmosphere. The recurrent riff that runs through the film is every bit as much a part of the 'feel' of the movie as anything that's on the screen. The thundering bass-line, towering minor-key organ chords, and funky 70's wakka-wakka guitar riffs are more than just the icing on the cake.

Fans of the film's soundtrack may be interested to know that is available on CD in the UK, released 2003 on the Trunk Records label. Head on over to Amazon.co.uk and you'll find it there. :)

The film's only on DVD in the US and the soundtrack's only available in the UK - go figure - but hopefully one day there'll be a Special Edition of this film which includes the soundtrack as a bonus disc. Hey, Anchor Bay / Blue Underground / Elite - that last comment was aimed at you guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great service, GREAT movies.......2006-03-06

How very cool to get a copy of Psychomania on DVD! Never knew it was released that way! Honestly, I've not even watched it yet, but I
have no reason to believe it's anything less than Satan's Sadists, which I purchased as a duo with Psychomania. Satan's Sadists is not properly titled: It is a classic, cheesy, F-em up
Biker movie...No Satan. Just Brutality, the kind found in the 7o's. Early. The movie was well packaged, timely sent, and in perfect condition; brand new. As is Psychomania, which was the movie I really wanted. Really GOOD price on Psychomania, as well. Movie came new but is very thin (not in a heavy, plastic
container) and cheaply packaged. Not the sellers fault, as far as I can tell. Satan's Sadists came very well packaged. High price, however...

5 out of 5 stars Undead Biker Frog Cult.......2005-11-13

The Living Dead are bikers who worship Satan in the form of a frog. They find out that, with the help of black magic, you can kill yourself and achieve immortality. AWESOME capers and excellent music follow.

Needs a deluxe DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Look at it from the 80's perspective!.......2004-07-27

The 80's movies, Horror, Comedy and of course Disney was high camp and over the top cheese. If you approach this movie that way then it is a 5! I had the pleasure of seeing it at the age of 12 and loved it, The song Roses and Rainbows came to me at that emotional time we call puberty. It taught to believe in ones self and don't wait for someone else too, A great lesson at 12! I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Budd and can tell you that there is not a more down to earth Star out there. So sit back in your parachute pants, tight shirt and spray some crazy color in your hair, Then you might get this movie!

5 out of 5 stars the devil and max devlin.......2004-07-09

This is not actually a review. I love the movie, have it on vhs and would like to get the dvd. However, it doesn't appear to be closed-caption. Any suggestions?

4 out of 5 stars I Don't Care What They Say...I Liked It!!.......2004-02-26

I've read the other reviews of this movie and I'm surprised they're so negative! While I'll admit that it's a little long and that, although I love Julie Budd, they play her big "hit song" about to death, overall I though it was great and had a great lesson or two in there...you just have to look a bit below the surface to find the powerful ones. (i.e., if you accept the devil's terms, you've already lost) I'll stop there for fear of giving too much away.
I think this movie is funny, entertaining and maybe not for really young kids. I'll bet the viewers who were bored grew up with The Terminator rather that good old fashioned Disney films.

1 out of 5 stars Have trouble sleeping? Insert this and push 'play'........2002-05-23

Bill Cosby has a lot in common with Bob Newhart, they both were a huge success at releasing uproariously funny comedy albums, and hit sitcoms and both were in dreadful films. This is one such Cosby flop. Cosby is the Devil. In the first half hour of the film a person (on earth) offhandedly remarks that it is as hot as hell, Cosby laughs and says he doesn't know how hot it is. That my friends is the funniest line in the picture. A true turkey.

1 out of 5 stars I Just Plain Didn't Like It..........2002-01-29

I just didn't like this movie. The story was bland and idiotic. The acting was TERRIBLE, led with two memoribly terrible performances from Bill Cosby (The scene where he turns into the devil near end, it was almost funny. It would have been if it wasn't so BAD!!!), and Julie Budd (The "Phone Scene" was educational to me. I learned that I could actually sleep with my eyes open!) An all around terrible film, with an even worse soundtrack! The only reason I'm giving it 1 star is because I can't give it zero!
