Product Description

Barney Snow (Wood) wakes up in a hospital with no memories but his name & recurring images of a car crash. With little else to go on, he makes the place his temporary home and soon learns that all of the other residents in this youth clinic are dying from terminal illnesses - except him. When another patient, Mazzo (Perrino), asks Barney to play host for his visiting twin sister Cassie (Cook), the two strike up a fast friendship that blooms into romance and promises a fresh start for Barney. But as he gradually pieces together his fragmented memory, he begins to unravel the puzzle of his strange dreams and remember his old life. How will Barney react once he learns the truth about his own past, and what will he do when Mazzo surprises him with a difficult request for help?

This is a pretty good movie, but the ending is crazy as hell. It pissed my wife off.

5 out of 5 stars Elijah Wood Soars in The Bumblebee Flies Anyway.......2005-07-13

"If you could let go of your past, to have a future, would you do it? Well, that's what I did. Now this is my life." That is the premise of The Bumblebee Flies Anyway as stated by Elijah Wood's character, Barney Snow. A soft, almost passive film, Bumblebee challenges us to follow a shadowy figure as he builds a new life through new acquaintances in the confines of a Research Institute, where hope for the future is based on the demise of the participants. In many ways, this premise is depressing. But, the focal point of the film is the one character, Barney Snow; and he's in good hands with Elijah Wood as pilot.

The film has a small population. A kidney diseased smart-alecky African-American kid who is mature beyond his years and as warm and outgoing as Barney is empty and introverted, is played by George Gore III. His performance is an important foil to Elijah's doe-soft Barney Snow and only fades appropriately when the real Barney is resurrected. Joe Perrino, as the acidic Mazzo, turns in a fine performance developing the character from the scared tough kid to the brave suicide. His scenes with Barney are pivotal. His sister, Cassie, played by Rachel Leigh Cook, makes for a fine lever to melt Barney Snow and capture his flame and his blooming teen heart. Janeane Garofalo manages to fill in the cracks with her stoic performance as Dr. Harriman. She's a bit sleepy in the part, but it blends into the overall dreamlike state we feel with all the characters, except Barney.

Barney Snow is a perfect canvas for Elijah Wood. It allows him to invent a person on screen for us, to present us with just a little, then some more and more, in a crescendo of revelation. As in films like The Ice Storm and the future Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Elijah Wood demonstrates how the super-star of The Lord of the Rings can project powerfully using minimalism. I have tried to imagine several young actors in the role of Barney Snow and none could have cut the mustard. They would have put us to sleep. The Bumblebee Flies Anyway is about Barney Snow; one character with a little help. I think Elijah Wood takes his queue from the title. By rights, this novel as a film should not Fly at all. Its wing span is too short and its plot line too shallow. But it does, because Elijah is the Bee, and he knows precisely what it's about and how to craft it into our memory.

This film, this quiet little film (No Orcs. No comedy script a la Chain of Fools, or heavy drama like Ash Wednesday or societal analysis like The Ice Storm), moves. It touches the heart like few films I have seen. It's an honest representation of its simple, unlikely premise carried full circle. It will uplift you and stay with you. You will watch it twice, and it will ripen a few more notches with the second viewing. For Elijah Wood fans, it's a must. He is in nearly every scene (unusual for any star) and he reveals a bit of skin for his adoring public. In any event, a film whose premise can be summed up in a single sentence, and might not be able to get off the ground even if shot from a canon, soars because Elijah Wood Flies Anyway. A+

3 out of 5 stars Interesting........2004-11-13

I thought this was a pretty good movie and i admit I wanted to see it because of elijah wood.. he is just great and does a good job in this movie! I also like Joe Perrino.. at first i didnt even know he was in it too, then i saw it had 2 of my favorite actors together and was excited! It took me a few viewings to actually get it because it seems confusing at first. And i thought the ending was very well done.

4 out of 5 stars Touching and heartfelt.......2004-05-16

I rated this movie 4 out of 5 stars based mostly on the heart-touching quality of it. It doesn't much matter if the ending is confusing and questionable. The ending just denotes that we all have spirits who need to fly, not be immobilized by an uncurable disease. If you watch the movie closely, there are some very artistic qualities about it, such as when Elijah Wood is bouncing the ball against the wall and there is a star of light shining between him and the wall. I enjoyed the acting, except (slightly)for Jeanene Garofolo.

2 out of 5 stars Even Elijah Wood can't save this movie.......2004-04-05

I'm a fan of Elijah Wood, but even he can't save this movie. The glacial pacing and confused story destroy an interesting premise. Also there is a total lack of chemistry between Elijah and Rachel Leigh Cook. The suffering of children with fatal illnesses is depicted with a certain realism in the Burto character, but it is only a partial picture because he is completely disconnected from his friends and family. Still, for me that was the most interesting part of the movie. The physicians are wooden zombies. Barney Snow's sufferings didn't project at all. Overall boring, a waste of otherwise talented actors.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE!!.......2003-10-21

The Bumblebee Flies Anyway

16 year old Barney Snow didn't remember much before he came to the clinic for terminally ill children. Only his name a few random facts and one dream, like a vision of his past, he was driving in a red convertible out of control but that is all that he remembers...

You see Barney is amnesic which means he cant remember anything about his life or how it ended. As Barney's condition worsens people keep having to tell him stuff over and over again. He then finds strength and hope in his roommate a boy with bone marrow cancer and as their friendship grows Barney has to come to terms with the fact that his new friend's days are limited. The title comes from the fact that bumblebee's are too big for their wings and shouldn't be able to fly but they do.
Mazza, his sister now turns to Barney for the strength to leave her brother. Mazza falls in love with Barney and the story takes a new turn as Barney must now decide which is worse, give up his future or lose his past?
This is a compelling story about hope, courage and friendship and one that may require Kleenex but should apeal to all ages 11-20 and is surly a movie you don't want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2003-08-10

One of my friends (a die-hard elijah fan) and I were trying to decide what movie to rent at a video store. She picked The Bumblebee flies anyway. What a stupid name. I was skeptical.
Here's the dirt: The movie is great, as long as you are a thinker. You will like it okay if you like chick flicks. If you are only an action-type movie goer, then don't bother, you won't appreciate it.
Acting-wise: Elijah wood does a great job, so does joe perrino. I also thought janene garafolo did a good job. Rachel lee cook wasn't that great. She had her moments, but every once in a while, it sucked. I mean, hey, if you're brother was dying, wouldn't you cry when your brother was dying and you had to say good bye?
it however, is a must see to us artistic individuals.
