Literally out-of-this-world, The American Astronaut is a post-Eraserhead, black-and-white comedy set on an asteroid that serves as an outpost for desperadoes, mad scientists, and paranoid travelers. Director Cory McAbee, frontman for the dynamic, experimental rock band the Billy Naylor Show, has constructed a seedy, surreal vision of conquered space that includes rocket ships operated by junkyard parts, barflies with a increasingly pathological sense of humor, and handguns that reduce people to a bucket's worth of sand. In this nightmarish, sometimes funny, sometimes tedious fantasy noir, a distressed astronaut (McAbee) agrees to swap a caged, embryonic female for a captive male on one planet and deliver the latter to the man-hungry (if peculiarly antebellum) women of Venus. The film doesn't necessarily hold up as a singular work, but there are several remarkable sequences, including a dance number in a scummy restroom and an unsettling comedy routine. Special features include an interesting interview with McAbee. --Tom Keogh
Description
Written, directed, and starring Cory McAbee of The Billy Nayer Show, this space western musical uses flinty black-and-white photography, rugged Lo-Fi sets and the spirit of the final frontier to bring the film, set in the dirty, isolated vastness of outer space, to life. The film also stars Rocco Sisto and Gregory Russell Cook. THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT follows the adventures of an interplanetary trader (McAbee) through his Homeric intergalactic journey to provide the all-female population of Venus with a suitable singular male, all the while being pursued by the cold-blooded and childish killer, Professor Hess (Sisto), an enigmatic figure from his past. The film features an original soundtrack by the The Billy Nayer Show.
Customer Reviews:
The Gospel of all movies.......2007-06-10
I'll just say if Orson Wells were alive and an indie rocker he would have made this movie. If you haven't seen it, you aren't a whole person yet. You'll understand that once you see this movie it is your civic duty to show everyone you know. One day, maybe, every man, woman, and child will have seen The American Astronaut.
MOVE OVER LYNCH!.......2006-11-16
THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE!!! It's so crazy because you never know what is going to happen next because it's in another reality on a different planet. But they still have super cool dirty dive bars even in space where things get REAL CRAZZZZY! Like this guy goes to the bathroom and these other two martians or something come in and start singing at him through the stall FOR NO #@%#!ing REASON. WTF-LOL!!? Absolutely incredible! It's like 2001 Space Odyssey on acid directed by David Lynch. Or Twin Peaks on MARS. PLUS, it's in Black and White, which makes everything seem old and real serious but at the same time weird and futuristic. BUY ONE. BUY TWO. BUY THREE of these DVDS and your out of your mind at the old ballgame. :@
A junker spaceship full o fun.......2006-07-05
Cory McAbee's movie is a fantastic voyage through weird-land. The story is very loose, essentially providing just enough glue to connect a series of musical set pieces. Every one of those pieces is completely hilarious, as well as being great music. Two early on in a bar (on the moon) are as wacky as anything I've ever seen; you'll know at that point whether you'll like this movie or not. If you have fairly broad musical tastes, and a hankerin for a different type of pure-entertainment movie experience, American Astronaut will not disappoint. Highest recommendation.
only one episode in the many adventures of Samuel Curtis.......2006-06-02
Directed by Corey McAbee of the rock/performance/art/film group The Billy Nayer Show (KETCHUP & MUSTARD MAN, reviewed in CdC #9), THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT is a cross-pollinated pastiche that plays as a science fiction/musical/comedy/western/road movie shot in beautiful black and white, with occasional low-tech animation, retro-futuristic art direction, and chocked full of catchy tunes, quirky characters, and pure originality.
Rakish pilot Samuel Curtis (McAbee) pilots his flying mobile-home spaceship through the galaxy, on several missions at once. When we first meet him, he's taking a cat to a run down bar on barren asteroid. He trades the cat for the ingredients of a "real live girl" clone. He meets up with his old dance partner, the Blueberry Pirate (producer Joshua Taylor) who proposes that Sam take the clone to Jupiter, an all male planet, in exchange for "The Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman's Breast" (Greg Russell Cook) before turning around and trading the boy for the former king of Venus, an all female planet. Corpse in tow, Sam could turn a hefty profit by bringing the deceased king back to his family on Earth. Got that? All the while, Sam is pursued by the insane Professor Hess (Rocco Sisto), a birthday boy who kills only those he has no reason to kill.
One of the things that make this film stand out among other musicals is that the songs are mere excuses for absurdity, rather than devices to progress the story. The music resembles avant-rock more than show tunes. The only exception is a song sung by a miner explaining how he and his clan ended up floating around space in a barn. Again, the song does not progress the film's story but explains the existence of some mostly insignificant characters and one minor character, and contains the only lyrics that sound specifically written for the film.
THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT feels like it is only one episode in the many adventures of Samuel Curtis. When the ending comes, it comes abruptly, as if McAbee is saying to the audience, "You already know how this is likely to end, so let's just stop here." McAbee's version of space, though, is one that deserves further exploration.
Weird but worthwhile.......2006-05-31
While this film is not quite a masterpiece, it deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who likes low budget oddness. However, The American Astronaut is more than just weirdness. It has a story, strange as it may seem, and it has down to earth characters, odd as they may appear on the surface. The FX are nice. Not fancy or impressive, but simple and effective. Not that they're really the point.
Astronaut has many strange musical interludes, which just pop up without reason. And the dialogue is often full of intentionally awkward moments. The movie has a leisurely pace, and doesn't rush where it's going. And when it gets there, it doesn't mind stopping with a simple resolution. I recommend renting before buying because it won't be to everyone's taste. But it's a good, unusual film. And I enjoyed it.

makes me happy.......2007-07-03
Pictures are a little jumpy in places - but it is full of memories for me. Nice music and video. Played it twice already - in the middle of summer - while preparing dinner.
Not worth the money.......2007-01-15
Christmas in New York has some good points, how could a DVD about such a wonderful city not have any!
The good points are:
1. Beautiful scenery
2. Beautiful Christmas lights
3. Nice Christmas music in the background.
4. Not bad, if you have it in the background for the music and look up at it occasionally, perhaps while opening presents.
The bad points are:
1. There is no spoken words only a musical background
2. Not a tour of New York City at Christmas
3. Extremely repetitive
4. I watched a good part of this in the fast forward mode
5. Although the scenery is lovely, Christmas in New York is always beautiful, it gets extremely boring.
Its OK, some scenes are great some really really boring........2007-01-11
Some of the scenes of New York are fantastic, but a lot of really boring stuff too. A model railroad, etc. Music is traditional. Good background music and video while the holiday party is in progress.
Christmas in New York.......2007-01-03
Great, just great. Being from NY, it helped me to feel like I was at home again. But just love all the Christmas lights. Kids and adults will love this DVD>
Bring me back home..Christmas in NY...Loved it!!!!!!!.......2006-12-24
Awesome! I wasn't expecting live video, I just thought it would be a slideshow to music. Boy was I wrong! I have it playing on my 55 inch plasma and feel like I am back home. My 3 year old especially loves the part showing the citicorp train set up, it was awesome to watch! I also loved the neighborhoods showing snow and lights and decorations, made me feel like I was looking back at my old street, just gave me that magical feeling like you only have as a child. :)
Of coarse I didn't live in the city, we lived on the island, but we would go to the city at Christmas when I was little to see the Nutcracker, and Rockefeller Plaza, and window shop. just to see the snow, the decorations the trees, the people, just brought back such warm memories for me, as I am homesick for snow here in the south. I am planning to play it all night for my Christmas Eve company, and than bring it with me to my sisters for Christmas Day, of coarse I am sure the guys will turn it off to watch football. lol... Anyway I didn't get it here at amazon, cause I found it at CD universe for $6.99. What a bargin! Highly recommended!!!!!!
PS: The only thing I would have liked to see done differently, but is ok as is.. would be some actual classic Christmas music, performed by original artists, but I guess that gets into copyright issues. Anyway my work around when I get tired of the music on disk (which is nice and very relaxing btw) is to dub my direct-tv XM holly channel 107 through the receiver, so I see the video of the dvd but the audio of the Christmas channel which has all the classics... awesome!!!! I am ready for Santa now :) lol....

Product Description
Set in Israel, The Holy Land grittily portrays Mendy (Oren Rehany), a young rabbinical student who ventures outside the safety of his regimented religious life to experience the secular world. Mendy falls in love with Sasha (Tchelet Semel), a nineteen-year-old Russian prostitute he meets in Tel Aviv, but his love turns obsessive.
As he pursues Sasha, Mendy is befriended by Mike (Saul Stein), a former American war photographer who owns "Mike's Place," a Jerusalem dive bar where Jews and Arabs drink side by side. There Mendy meets Razi (Robert Illooz), an Arab wheeler and dealer and the colorful "Exterminator" (Arie Moskuna), an M-16 wielding American-born hard-line Jewish settler.
As Mendy becomes more and more involved with them, he begins to question his future and faith. But when Mike and Razi involve Mendy and Sasha in a shady smuggling scheme it proves to be the ultimate turning point in all their lives.

bad on so many levels.......2006-07-07
The acting is bad, the storyline even worse and worst of all it works with stereotypes and prejudices, like Arabs are suicide bombers even if they seem to be nice. I don't think you learn anything about Israel and its culture, except if you count a few shots of Jerusalem. The movie is the equivalent of a dime novel and plain bad with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
A powerful, if uneven, treatment of soul-searching among two very different Israeli youth........2006-06-30
Eitan Gorlin's semi-autobiographical work is worth seeing...if you don't mind some strong nudity. Techelet is mesmerizing, and Oren gives an appropriately spare performance.
The film does show the director's own ambivalence of his leaving Orthodox Jewish life. I think Mendy's choices, especially at the end of the film, show that his heart is still torn, but ready to return.
Pleasing.......2004-11-18
A little slow at some parts. HL is a charming movie on friendship, love and opposites. A really good Israeli movie.
Interesting plot....upsetting, predictable ending...........2004-10-29
I enjoyed this little indie film. I thought it was well acted, and had an interesting plot. The first half of the movie is definitely better than the second half. The ending was predictable and disappointing. But overall, give this movie a try.
Israeli background added interest to a rather silly story.......2004-10-22
This small independent 2001 film is set in Israel in the year 2000 (before things really got bad). It's a sort-of romance about a shy rabbinical student who falls in love with a young Russian prostitute. It's a silly story but the Israeli background adds interest and perspective as the audience gets to see a view of the Holy Land which is, in reality, it's underbelly. There's a strip club in Tel Aviv where the young woman works and is exploited by her employers. There's a bar in Tel Aviv owned by a drunken American ex-patriot where Arabs, Jews and unsavory individuals from around the world congregate. There's a hint of illegal smuggling and a lot of partying including drugs and alcohol. And, generally, the story is lightweight until the conclusion, which made me think that the author had written himself into a corner and didn't know how to get out.
I rather enjoyed the concept and the scenery. Acting was good and the young actress was pretty and some of the explicit scenes were fun to watch. But even though the film was only 98 minutes long, I found myself bored and wishing it would hurry up. Even though there was a hint of intrigue and of politics, it was only for background. And, unfortunately, the romantic relationship never really rang true. And so I can only give "The Holy Land" a very lukewarm recommendation.

Death By Puppet..........2006-07-12
ROGUE'S TAVERN is an Old Dark House-type murder mystery set in an inn. Wallace Ford (One Frightened Night) plays a department store detective who just happens to be at the Red Rock Inn w/ his fiancee (Barbara Pepper) when the murders begin. At first, we're led to believe that a mad dog is the culprit, but we soon find out that all of the guests have been summoned to this place in order to be done in! Ford isn't bad as a fairly reserved, level-headed guy, unlike his usual goofball roles. Pepper is pretty good in her sleuthing role as well. RT would make a nice addition to your next "who-done-it?" marathon...
"You frisk the ladies.".......2005-04-02
In the film "Rogue's Tavern" detective Jimmy Kelly (Wallace Ford) and store detective Marjorie Burns (Barbara Pepper) run off to get married and plan to call a Justice of the Peace to perform the ceremony at the Red Rock Tavern. When Jimmy tries to reserve a room, he is told that the inn is fully booked, so he decides to wait there with his fiancee until the Justice of the Peace shows up. A group of people--several men and one woman are staying at the tavern. They've all been summoned to the inn by mysterious requests. Within a short period of time, the first corpse shows up. A savage animal bite appears to be the cause of death. The body count rises, the phone lines are dead, and the visitors discover that they are trapped inside the inn with no way to escape.
"Rogue's Tavern" fits the old formula of the classic murder mystery--a remote, spooky location, and summoned guests who are promptly bumped off one-by-one. The film seems to be a direct descendant of Victorian melodrama, with bad over-acting, cheaply constructed sets, maniacal laughter from the villain, dreadful special effects, and one of the most pathetic death scenes I've ever seen. However, there's a nice dynamic between Jimmy and his fiancee, and the murders are impossible to solve until the final denouement. This black and white Alpha DVD of the 1936 film was fairly decent quality--displacedhuman

Postmark Paradise.......2007-01-13
A very unique movie, it is entertaining. It's definitely easy to tell that it's very low-budget. If you like this, you would probably like "Birthday Girl" and "A Foreign Affair: Two Brothers and a Bride" even more.
The emancipation of a Russian mail order bride.......2006-01-28
For obvious economic and social reasons, many Russian women have come to the United States as "mail order brides." In general I have been deeply disappointed with films dealing with this subject because they treat Russian women as sex objects. Not so with this movie...and that is good. In this film, the Russian female Viktoria comes to the United States in response to a misleading invitation by some "good ol' boys" in the middle of nowhere, the town of Paradise in Michigan. She has to fend for herself, restore her self-confidence, learn to be independent in America. She does this through her kindness, understanding, and skill in treating animals. Vikoria's struggles and successes make this a very touching movie.
quirky romantic comedy.......2004-09-24
After a group of friends order a mail order bride from Russia as a prank, the beautiful Viktoria (Russian pop star Natalie Nazarova in her feature-film debut) arrives in the small town of Paradise, Michigan. Comedy ensues as Viktoria manages to teach the small town residents a valuable lesson about living the American Dream. For those who like thoughtful independent films; the cast of relative unknowns seems genuine.

Description
Dunsmore: a quiet one-road town in the backwoods of Florida, too far off the highway to be noticed. When local bully Ronny Roy Pritcher is brutally murdered, the media descends on this small town, and Special Investigator Walter Taylor is sent to question the local townspeople. At first no one will talk to an outsider-but gradually Taylor learns the details of Pritcher's sadistic reign of terror and the horrifying events leading up to his death. Based on a true story, this compelling, provocative film was directed with startling realism and insight by the Academy Award«-nominated documentary filmmaker Peter Spirer (Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel, Beef and Rhyme & Reason).
Customer Reviews:
A very good revenge movie.......2005-04-18
This movie centers around the death of one man and a detective trying to determine why he was killed, and who killed them. As he slowly digs he finds multiple people having motive to kill the man and the movie manages the pose the question: does someone really deserve to die? Old-school street justice style. Anyway, I went into this movie not having high hopes, and thought it turned out to be a very good movie. It was interesting, and the characters are very well developed. I did not give it the 5th star because it is far from flawless. At times is very farfetched, for example: the fact of how lenient local law authorities where in this movie. The local law officers almost act afraid to arrest the main character in the movie, as well as a few other farfetched sequences. Otherwise the DVD had good sound, good picture, and some above average acting. It kept me interested, at times it made me laugh, and at other times drew me in enough to the point I wanted to see the main character get the tar beat out of him. Great movie. As a side note, being a horror movie fan, I should mention this has its good share of violence, blood, and language. Although it is definitely a crime/mystery/drama type of movie.

Over the course of its history, jazz has developed a reputation as heady, difficult music, something that can only be grasped and appreciated by pipe-smoking deep thinkers. While that may be somewhat true of certain styles--the breakneck inventions of the bebop generation or Ornette Coleman's avant-garde probings, for instance, probably wouldn't appeal to your average Kenny G fan--the rap is largely undeserved, and nowhere is that more clear than in this delightful performance by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. These seven men, young and old, black and white, all of them inheritors of a grand New Orleans tradition, have but one goal: to entertain. And that they most certainly do, taking us back to the time before the saxophone was king, when trumpets, clarinets, trombones, and banjos were jazz's principal instruments, and the jaunty, syncopated rhythms of rags, marches, and the blues were its primary sounds.
Don't expect a musty museum tour, however. While we get plenty of the familiar perennials ("Basin Street Blues," "Tiger Rag," and, of course, "When the Saints Go Marching In"), the musicians are not totally mired in the past. Indeed, the highlight of the 70-minute program (which includes some history of Preservation Hall as well as interviews) is a lengthy version of "St. Louis Blues," with extended solos by all the players, walking bass, and swing tempo--all touches that didn't come along until years after New Orleans jazz was first played. But those are the finer points. The accent here is on letting the good times roll. The musicians are clearly enjoying themselves. So's the audience--and so will you. Okay, so it's not deep. But it sure is fun. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
Not the best..but..........2001-01-12
Any recording of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band deserves notice. However, the funky, dark qualities of Preservation Hall were destroyed by video lighting. Inconsistant editing and intrusive interviews...(let them play, guys! It's all we need to know!) spoiled what is otherwise a musically satisfying performance...
