First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

Description

5 out of 5 stars A Good movie.......2007-07-03

This is an awesome movie i enjoyed it alot, i think it's a movie for everyone of all ages.

If you liked this movie then check out the soundtrack and video game.

4 out of 5 stars Not Besson's Best But Still Good.......2007-06-28

Luc Besson fan's may be a bit disappointed but most people would probably really enjoy the movie as I did. Madonna was surprisingly good as the voice of Princess Selenia. De Niro's voice over work did not seem to fit at all. I honestly have no idea why the director was cool with it. Freddie Highmore was also very good. I believe that using unrecognizable voices in movies like this can add to the charm. Sometimes using "A" list actors takes away from the charm of a movie.

5 out of 5 stars delightful movie.......2007-06-27

Both of us really loved it. The morphed kids were delightful, the backgrounds very cool, the villians a hoot, and the ending was perfect.

3 out of 5 stars Cute movie but ugh the voices..........2007-06-27

I loved everything about this movie except for most of the choices of voice actors for the characters. David Bowie was great as the villain. The rest... Bateman, De Niro, awful! Madonna as the princess and little kid's love interest?! PLEASE! Sadly, I feel these things really ruined an adoreable movie. I understand they got big name actors to help draw people, but the casting was bad... really bad. I would have much rather had no named people who's voices fit the look of the characters.

2 out of 5 stars Great Film, Bad DVD.......2007-06-11

When I origionally saw this film in the cinema, it was great! full of action and the jokes where quite witty.
Unfortunatly this dvd version has been censored to a point where quite a few of the action sequences have been cut out and the film just dosn't flow.
The film cuts from diferent scenes, missing out sections that leave the viewer quite puzzled about how the characters got to the point they are at.
I don't understand why they would censor an animated film that is rated PG anyway.
All in All if you can get your hands on the origional version its a must!
but for the time beeing I'd stay away from it, it kind of ruins the real fun the story has.

Description

Pushing his themes of sexual liberation to their boiling point, Yugoslavian art-house provocateur Dusan Makavejev followed his international sensation WR: Mysteries of the Organism with this full-throated shriek in the face of bourgeois complacency and movie watching. Sweet Movie tackles the limits of personal and political freedom with kaleidoscopic feverishness, shuttling viewers from a gynecological beauty pageant to a grotesque food orgy with scatological, taboo-shattering glee. With its lewd abandon and sketch-comedy perversity, Sweet Movie became both a cult staple and an exemplar of the envelope pushing of 1970s cinema.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As sweet as its title suggests..........2007-07-05

This is one of those great, "cinematic endurance test" films. It's really an amazing piece of cinema, maybe like Godard meets Jodorowsky. It has a well deserved reputation of being a shocking, polarizing film, but I think it's amazingly good. So what if people urinate on each other here? And indulge in emetophilia and coprophilia? And make love in sugar and chocolate? Does this sound interesting to you? It should, because the film makes other points as well. It's not just shock value. I don't want to go into any more details about it, other than you will never forget this film. It's like Pasolini's Salo, except it has a lot more humour.

4 out of 5 stars A Bitter Sweet.......2007-07-01

There are movies that are devised from formulas developed to serve (and be served by) the Demographic ..... and then there are those rare films that create their own audience. Unfortunately, when Makavejev first unleashed his Sweet Movie in 1974, most interested parties of influence saw fit to have it banned, and the filmmaker himself was exiled (along with some cast members) from his native Yugoslavia for nearly 15 years.

Multi-mega kudos to Criterion for rescuing this now very alive and relevant explosion of a movie from near-obscurity. Beautifully restored, looking and sounding better than I remembered it, and including in this edition interviews and more in-depth facts about the making and history of this one-of-a-kind movie, watching it again restored in this viewer an appreciation of artists who put themselves way out on a line to give life to a vision, one that can become more relevant over time, despite overall condemnation at its initial release. As stated in the accompanying literature, there are countries where the movie is banned for any sort of distribution, to this day.

The dual story line, about two Women of Earth (Miss Monde 1984 and Captain Anna Planeta), is interwoven in a montage-like format that lashes out at Capitalism and Communism, spits in the eye of all manner of creative or sensual oppression, and does so in a take-no-prisoners satirical fantasy sense that helps lighten up the otherwise dark and intense subject matter. As Makavejev explains in an interview, had he tried to do any of it seriously, it would have hampered his film's acceptance all the more so, for it was fully his intent to make contact with his audience in an entertaining, circus-style (although somewhat abstract) manner. Anna Planeta commandeers a sort of ghost ship, Survival (sporting a huge carving of Karl Marx's noggin on front), through the canals of Amsterdam; she is a phantom, a political prostitute, and a reluctant predator, attracting victims with sex, candy and propaganda. She is joined by a nameless sailor who wears a cap from the Battleship Potemkin (another phantom?), and despite her warnings that her sweetened cargo is rife with corpses, he is swept up in the happy delirium of the Survival's relentless voyage to ...? Meanwhile, Miss Canada is inspected by a notable gynecologist on The Crazy Daisy Show, wins the title of Miss World 1984 along with an arranged marriage to a Texas milk tycoon who wants to buy Niagara Falls. The wedding night doesn't go so well, and next thing she knows she is knocked out, packed into a suitcase and shipped off to Paris ..... at which point things get weird on a Candide level. Much of the movie's final third, involving a near-explicit sex dance for young boys and some truly disturbing performance art (which was entirely improvised by Otto Muehl's Viennese Therapy Commune) involving eating, excreting, self-mutilating and acting like babies is certain to elicit squirms, and a private first viewing is highly recommended. Although, if you really wanted to mess with people at a party, play this film and follow it with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

As mentioned earlier, the included extras deepen the experience of the film, as well as introduce a welcome sense of normalcy after viewing. One outstanding addition is star Anna (Planeta) Prucal's interview about the effect the film had on her life (she was one of those who was exiled), and a stunning performance of a song from the film that will induce tears. Her blissfully unbound performance as Captain Anna carries Sweet Movie with a courage that is near unmatchable in cinema. No less courageous is the beautiful Carole Laure, whose surreal odyssey in the parallel reality we share in a nearly unspeaking performance, and whose undulations in a vat of chocolate syrup will linger long in the viewer's memory.

A hard film to recommend, but great for one of those Dare-Yourself-To-Sit-Through-It evenings, Sweet Movie's return down the canal is certain to open up a whole new generation of discussion with its resurrection into the digital archives. The title itself is its own expletive; but like any significant work, its "meaning" is wholly about the effect of its experience.

4 out of 5 stars Right On! Government Sucks! Oh Wait, Poo?.......2007-06-20

Dusan Makavejev's 1974 film Sweet Movie is an indictment toward all forms of authority and convention. It does not obviously or even wittingly perhaps come from an honest political standard itself, but it instead exists to attack all that rules us. It skewers capitalism, communism, and absolutely everything in between. Perhaps it is a call specifically for some sort of Anarcho-Primitivism? Perhaps Sweet Movie is simply a celebration of life in its own sick and twisted way?

Sweet Movie follows two different stories and both feature a female protagonist. The first follows a contestant of the 1984 Miss Monde pageant. She wins and her prize is her marriage to some big corporate dude. She is shocked by how he degrades her in their first meeting and she runs away. Her rejection is met with displeasure by his cronies and she ends up getting pretty severely humiliated and then stuffed into a suitcase and shipped off to France. After that she gets stuck to some Latin guy and enters a commune and some pretty wacky things happen. This story operates as a criticism toward capitalism and consumerism at the beginning and the conclusion, while it seems to attack communism in the middle. The second story follows a young woman who is leading a boat down a river. The boat is full of candy and has a statue of Karl Marx on it. She seduces all who encounter her with sex, candy and propaganda. Then she kills them. Obviously it is a direct attack on communism.

There are some pretty shocking things in Sweet Movie but that shouldn't be a surprise when taking into account the time period and some of the subversive and surreal counterculture names involved in the film (e.g. Otto Muehl, Roland Topor and George Melly). The film captures a cultural movement in some respects and the significance is there but overall Sweet Movie was too obscure to have an impact. Only now does it resonate but for very different reasons. It stands out for its visual shock alone.

There is a very strong emphasis on bodily functions in Sweet Movie, more so than anything I've ever seen or even want to see again for that matter. I can't pinpoint why but it's more than likely Dusan Makavejev's attempt to compel us to revolt against all of our societal institutions by directly desensitizing us to his perspective that we are all just gassy and disgusting animals. Spend a few days resisting your normal cognitive functions or spend some time with dementia patients and you'll get a good smell of what Makavejev is trying to get at here...I think? I'm not sure I agree with him in those sorts of details, but in spirit I like where he is going with Sweet Movie. We all could use a good smack away from the restraints of everyday society.

Keep in mind; it is virtually impossible to get anything out of Sweet Movie if you take it too literally. It is designed to surprise the viewer and club them over the head with shock. The problem with that is Sweet Movie was so shocking for its time that it was hardly even seen. People were not ready then, but maybe the world has grown sicker since. Criterion may have picked a more accessible release date for Sweet Movie than Makavejev did. Asking ourselves the questions that this film might produce may be more important now than ever.

5 out of 5 stars This movie does have a point........2003-09-26

To all those who said that this movie has not point I am sorry but you are wrong. The purpose of this movie is to basically give us a wake up call. The sugar represents how everything is sugar coated. All of the evil things that are done such as the children was sugar coated as if to make it less evil. Also the actual footage of the babies and the dead bodies, anyone know the significance here? It is real, this is not horrible things done by actors to make a movie. This is REAL LIFE but yet that does not phase us. Rather what freaks us out is people puking IN A MOVIE. The director reminds us at the end that this is a fictional movie because the children come alive, but the train in the background....any idea where that goes? It is a train to Aushwitz (dont think that is spelt right). The sailor that is picked up is the last suviving sailor from the ship that started the russian revolution(look at his hat). The rich man or Capitolistic america pisses and tarnishes all that is pure and innocent(his wife) in this world. There are so many connections to the real world. SO what he is saying is that actual footage of the true evil that has happened in this world should be more offensive to us then any finctional movie should be.

5 out of 5 stars definitely oddball but worth it.......2002-09-13

An Icelandic reviewer remarked on the Norwegian censorship of this film. One of the interesting factoids about this bizarre film is that it had many versions - different countries edited it according to their (in)sensibilities. More interestingly, the director thought this very amusing rather than insulting.

Another reviewer remarked that he took a first date to this film which I find hilarious. Rather than demanding to leave however, I might have married him.

In any case, take it as you might any hallucinogen - expect both the expected and unexpected.

Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (Phar Lap) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood. --Tom Keogh

Classic Western in a new setting. The stoic cowboy and the damsel in distress Down Under. It is always a good evening when watching the interactions of the cowboy and the 'crazy lady'.

From the beginning when he rescues her and she 'latches onto him' as her protector, right to the end when she.... Well... that would be telling.

It has all the right mixtures, The Good Guy, The Surprisingly Tough Damsel, and The Overstated Evil Cattle Baron, all in the wilds of old Australia. Good Stuff!

Tom Selleck plays a Great Hero in this movie. If you can handle some Brutal seens ,Blood and Shot'em up swearing, but in the content of this movie its done to bring its point across and does that.Hey Who Watchs Westerns in Todays World? 3 out of 5 stars Quigley ... not a bad movie.......2007-02-06

It was sort of a Revisionist Western. It was set in the Colonial period of Australia . The best things were

* the cinematography of Australia's glorious landscape. Most of it shot around Alice Springs where I lived the a while.

* adequate performances from the 3 main characters ..Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo currently seen as Maya Gallo in TV show "Just Shoot Me", and Alan Rickman .... and it has dingo's too

"Quigley" is a reasonable action movie which revealed the truth of our shameful past.

Step Up happily joins the long line of movies intoxicated by sexy bodies in motion. When an overachieving dancer (Jenna Dewan, Take the Lead) at an East Coast art school loses her partner just before a big showcase, her only possible replacement is a young tough (Channing Tatum, She's the Man) doing community service as a janitor. From there, Step Up slams together a folio of cliches, from prissy-rich-girl-gets-loosened-up-by-poor-boy to hoodlum-learns-the-error-of-his-ways-through-personal-tragedy to artist-discovers-his-voice. It's set in one of those performing arts schools where the students burst into spontaneous synchronized dance at parties. But Step Up, directed by choreographer Anne Fletcher, has a relaxed kinetic momentum and enough texture to give the nonsense just a hint of realistic grit. More than anything, Step Up shows off hunky Channing Tatum. With his sleepy eyes, broad jaw, and sloping neck, Tatum looks like an Easter Island statue come to life. His acting range may be limited, but Tatum has a definite lazy charisma; even when dancing full tilt, he looks like he just woke up and is still dreaming of the night before. Step Up also features Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) as the requisite tough-but-loving-authority-figure. --Bret Fetzer

Spying Tyler's smooth moves, Nora decides to take a chance on him. But as they begin training, tension builds, tempers flare and the differences in their backgrounds explode — igniting this electrifying tale about not giving up on your dreams.

my daughter and i love this movie. she has watched it over and over even with the commentary! she is 14 and i am almost 40 and we both agree that it was very good. we like music and dance. and channing tatum is a good actor and good looking too!

4 out of 5 stars lbuggie's review.......2007-05-29

I saw this movie just this past week-end and I must say, I really liked it! My favorite part was when Tyler and Nora first danced together in the spot their friend Lucy sang at with her boyfriend, the jerk. Same ol' plot, but different in it's own unique way.

5 out of 5 stars Step Up.......2007-05-28

I am an admitted dance-film addict. Moreover, I am fixated with Channing Tatum, mostly because he is exceedingly hot (that is a scientific term). Obviously I enjoyed the movie, although I prefer the preppy Channing of "She's the Man". Still, the film was fun and entertaining and while no one is going to win any academy awards it is an enjoyable feel-good movie all the same. If you like dancing movies, you will enjoy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and hip.......2007-04-14

Channing Tatum as Tyler Gage gives a great performance in this fun movie. The basic idea is a bit contrived, but it works: a no-gooder teenager with a knack for rap is reluctantly coopted by a beautiful dancer in need of a partner. He will of course help her jazz up her act, she will make him a better man, and they will fall in love. Aside from annoying zigzags in Tyler's commitment (one slip is OK, but three?!), the script pulls us in. It is helped by a lot of dancing, not always great but always energetic. Rachel Griffiths is excellent in the minor role of the principal of the art school.

5 out of 5 stars Step Up.......2007-04-13

I enjoyed this movie. I finally got to see Channing Tatum show his true talent. Jenna is also awsome in this. Every film that I've seen her in she never fails to deliver a good performance. This movie touches on a group of kids from different sides of the track, but are brought together by common bonds, music and dance. I also enjoy the bonus features of this movie, videos and submission tapes.

The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids--something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo's (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo's classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a happier ending than Hugo's): Quasimodo, the ward of repressive monk Frollo, falls for a gypsy girl named Esmerelda (Demi Moore)--though she loves one of the king's guards (Kevin Kline). But they are all put in jeopardy by the wicked Frollo, whose secret passion for Esmerelda leads him to seek her death. At times too dark and even a shade kinky, something that may scare younger viewers. --Marshall Fine

Description

Inspired by Victor Hugo's classic novel, Disney brings the heroic adventures of Quasimodo, the gentle and lonely bell ringer of Notre Dame, to spectacular life. This critically acclaimed Disney masterpiece is an "uplifting, thrilling story with a heart-touching message that emerges from the comedy and song" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). At the urging of his hilarious gargoyle pals Victor, Hugo, and Laverne, Quaismodo leaves the solitary safety of his tower, venturing out to find his first true friend, the gypsy beauty Esmerelda. The most unlikely of heroes, Quasi fights to save the people and the city he loves and, in turn, helps us to see people for who they are, rather than how they appear. The star-studded voice cast includes Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, and Demi Moore in a magnificent Disney musical from renowned composer Alan Menken.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Disney movies ever made.......2007-05-18

I stand true to my title. This is deffinetly my favorite movie ever. People, don't listen to the overprotective parents claiming that this is a horrble dark movie. Yes, it is dark, and yes it needed a PG rating but the kids won't understand it in the first place.I didn't understand the song "Hellfire" until I was twelve. Please do not shove that world is good junk down our throats. Overall, this is a fantastic movie. It has phenomenol singing, timeless characters, and an overall great plot. Admidetlly, you might was to show it to 8 and up just because they might understand it better. I highly recomend this breathtaking movie

4 out of 5 stars Disney taking over Paris.......2007-05-10

I didn't really like the movie but it of course might just be me and my biases against the beginning of the movie, which just like Bambi, I hated. This Disney animated cartoon takes places in fifteenth century Paris and is mainly about a hunchback named Quasimodo who lived in the bell tower of Notre Dame. The minister of justice at the time if Claude Frollo almost kills Quasimodo in the beginning of the movie but was forced by the Archdeacon to raise Quasimodo, who he keeps hidden away in the tower. During the festival of fools, he meets Esmeralda, a spirited gypsy and Phoebus, a soldier, who find themselves at odds with Frollo and his cruelty against the gypsies. Adventure about the three of them trying to overcome the evil of the reigning government and the tyrants within it.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-02-08

Some parts were a little too scary for younger viewers, but it was a very sweet version of an old classic book.

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Best Film Ever - A Dark Masterpiece.......2007-02-02

Yes, I went there. This movie, no question, is Disney's best movie that they've *ever* made, bar none. This is by no means a children's movie, however, which puts some people off, considering the company that made it. This is also Disney's darkest work yet, except perhaps The Black Cauldron.

First, I feel the need to address what I feel is the most powerful aspect of the entire movie: the soundtrack. There is nothing out there that's quite like the music in this movie, and Alan Menken deserves to be lauded for this spectacular acheivement. From the sweeping chords of "Out There" to the sweet sounds of "God Help The Outcasts" to the demonic Latin chorus in "Hellfire", the music is completely extraordinary. This movie definitely ignored some unspoken barriers that were thought in place in animation, and it benefitted from ignoring those barriers (for example, the song "Hellfire" would never have been allowed in theaters five years prior to its release--not only is it completely based off of religion and lust but the name itself is questionable for children's fare.

The cinematography in this movie is also superb; also the best that Disney has ever offered in a classically animated movie. All you have to do is watch the tremendously powerful "Out There" scene to agree with this factual statement, and the opening camera swoop into the city during "The Bells of Notre Dame" is the perfect way to begin the movie.

Along with all of this, the voice acting and wonderful singing proved worth the price of the movie. Paul Kandel is wonderful as everyman narrator Clopin, nailing the high notes with almost-unreasonable skill. Tom Hulce, famous for playing the titular role in the movie "Amadeus" much earlier in his career, is spectacular, and his singing voice is unprecedentedly phenomenal. The musicality of his powerful notes ("Out There") are perfectly offset by his softer, sweeter moments ("Heaven's Light"). Demi Moore, though she didn't sing her part, brought the perfect amount of flair and verve to her part as the feisty gypsy girl Esmeralda. Jason Alexander, Charles Kimbrough are at the top of their games as the three oft-criticized gargoyles, who, though they are indeed non-canon characters from "Hunchback", add the perfect amount of humor to the film without going completely overboard. And the greatest of compliments for voice-acting must go to Tony Jay, whose deep, resonant vocal quality and incredible singing during the song "Hellfire" make the entire movie great. The demonic Frollo would not have been the same type of character without the magic that Tony Jay brought to the role. Kevin Kline also did a good job as Phoebus, even though his act wasn't quite as memorable as the aforementioned.

At the time that this movie was set to be released, it seemed like the strangest choice of a story to be given the Disney treatment. But as it stands, this holds up as, to date, Disney's greatest cinematic achievement.

Quite possibly the nadir of Steven Spielberg's career as a producer, this piece of sentimental junk from 1987 concerns five little spacecraft which arrive on Earth just in time to help out some New Yorkers getting kicked out of a tenement. The script's goo just sticks to the viewer, and the cast looks silly by trying not to be silly. You get the feeling that Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment was pretty much throwing stuff at the wall to see what would hang there, and they came up with this ridiculous thing. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie~.......2007-03-19

I had it on VHS for years and am still converting to DVD. I had to have this long time favorite. Jessica Tandy was such an awesome actress.

5 out of 5 stars For All Ages.......2006-11-04

This delightful film has it all: terrific acting, charming fantasy, low key action and appropriately targeted villain (greedy developer).

3 out of 5 stars Great Blend of the old and the New.......2006-11-03

There are so many reasons this is a good film. The biggest is that it has a main plot that even little children can understand and therefore watch it over and over again.
The other reason you should watch this film is for all of the little subplots. Let's see, there's a single mother, corporate greed, a washed up artist, an over-the-hill boxer, an older couple one of whom is a little confused, and best of all, there's little UFO's!
I'm sure you'll recognize at least a few of the actors who are very accomplished and pull this story off in a very believable way.
And, whether believable or not, there actually is a happy ending, but I won't spoil it for you.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Universe.......2006-10-15

This is a wonderful story showing the Universe can have Aliens that are not horrors monsters or disasters for humans and humanity. Kids or Adults can see a picture of Aliens, not the usual us in a strange colored costume but folks we cannot see or even recognize as folks. Strangers with a problem seek help and after receiving help, return the favor.
Aliens that flash thru the night abducting people, and destroying property are enemies.
Aliens that come in the night, make contact with local people, seeking understanding and trade, are far more likely representatives of extra solar beings.

4 out of 5 stars If you havent lost the wonder.......2006-09-28

Movie reviewers and other cynical people pooh paw this movie. But if you havent lost the wonder of imagination and havent become too jaded by the world, this is a great movie for you and your kids one weekend, complete with popping corn, milkduds and watching the face of your young still believing in the unbelievable.
There is nothing wrong with a silly movie, and for escape loaded with hopes and dreams this is one you can watch more than once. It allows you to see the problems with dementia, and the vows of commitment, an appreciation for history and finding love in all the right places when your own dreams wont hold you up anymore. A silly movie that shows you a sense of community and helping your neighbor, and in the process, rdminding you of your own youth and how wonderful you thought Bambi was.

This somewhat unpleasant 1992 sequel to the blockbuster Home Alone revisits the first film's gimmick by stranding Macaulay Culkin's character in New York City while his family ends up somewhere else. Again, the little guy meets up with colorful people on the margins of society (including a pigeon woman played by Brenda Fricker) and again he gets into a prop-heavy battle with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The latter sequence is even worse than the first film in terms of violence inflicted on the two villains (director Chris Columbus, who also made the first film, can't seem to emphasize the slapstick over the graphic effects of the fight). The best running joke finds a concierge (Tim Curry) at the swank hotel where Culkin is staying trying and failing to prove that the boy is on his own. --Tom Keogh

Description

Incredible dancing and awesome music fuel STEP UP, the exhilarating and inspiring movie starring Channing Tatum (SHE'S THE MAN, COACH CARTER) who sizzles as Tyler Gage, a rough and streetwise hunk with raw talent. When Tyler finds himself doing community service at a school for the performing arts, he also finds Nora, a beautiful and privileged classically trained dancer who's searching for a temporary replacement for her injured dance partner. Spying Tyler's smooth moves, Nora decides to take a chance on him. But as they begin training, tension builds, tempers flare and the differences in their backgrounds explode — igniting this electrifying tale about not giving up on your dreams.

5 out of 5 stars great movie!!.......2007-06-11

my daughter and i love this movie. she has watched it over and over even with the commentary! she is 14 and i am almost 40 and we both agree that it was very good. we like music and dance. and channing tatum is a good actor and good looking too!

It's a good thing Sandra Bullock knows her strengths and weaknesses, because without Bullock as star and producer, Miss Congeniality would be an insufferable mess as opposed to being a mildly enjoyable trifle that is custom-made for Bullock's established screen persona. Only Bullock's fans could really appreciate this fluff (even then they'll wish its ripe premise had been more intelligently handled), but it's not without some highlights to accompany Bullock's reliable charms. Here she plays clumsy, nerdy FBI agent Gracie Hart, who is given the horrific pseudonym Gracie Lou Freebush (one example of the movie's juvenile tendencies) when assigned to infiltrate a beauty pageant to investigate threats of a terrorist attack.

Transforming Bullock from frumpy to stunning is a piece of cake (although she gives pageant coach Michael Caine a run for his money), so the movie's premise is trivial at best. More enjoyable is her character's uncouth disdain for pageant contestants and her mistaken perception that they're all a bunch of bimbos. The movie nicely charts Gracie's realization that her own pageant makeover provides a much-needed ego boost. In addition to Caine's effortless scene-stealing, pageant host William Shatner and organizer Candice Bergen are smart choices for comedic support (Shatner's a perfect Bert Parks wannabe), but the movie desperately needs a credible foundation for its comedy to really pay off. Bullock's bureau boss (Benjamin Bratt) is an unconvincing dimwit, and none of the plotting is as smart as say Beverly Hills Cop in combining procedure with laughs. That leaves Bullock to carry the burden of a comedy that just barely works in her favor. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Sandra Bullock stars as a bumbling female FBI agent assigned to go undercover as a participant in the Miss United States beauty pageant when it is discovered that one of the contestants is being targeted for murder. Benjamin Bratt leads the undercover team, while also playing the reluctant love interest. Candice Bergen and William Shatner manage the pageant and hire Michael Caine to turn Bullock from rough and tumble agent to stunning beauty queen. The physical transformation is impressive, although the klutzy personality remains. Everything seems to be fine once the killer is suddenly caught, but Bullock suspects there is more to this story, and the truth eventually unfolds with an unexpected twist. For her part, Bullock received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress, and heads the star-studded cast in the year's most hilarious comedy.

** From the lyrics to Tom Jones' hit song "She's a Lady" (played over the closing credits):

Well, she's all you'll ever want
She's the kind I'd like to flaunt
And take to deener.

Well she always knows her place
She's got style, she's got grace
She's a wiener!

I put off watching this movie for a long time, as I generally don't laugh at the comedies Hollywood produces these days. When I did finally watch, however, I had a wonderful hour and a half. It is an absurd situation - an FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) must transform herself from a tough tomboy to a beauty pageant contestant in just two days in order to thwart a unibomber-type domestic terrorist who has targeted the Miss United States pageant.

Bullock is charming, as is the entire supporting cast - including William Shatner who seems to be having fun in his Bert Parks-like pageant emcee role. Michael Caine glides lightly in his loafers as Bullock's handler and makeover artiste.

All in all, a very enjoyable way to spend an evening. Congratulations to everyone involved in making a light and fun piece of entertainment. "Miss Congeniality" is a real wiener!

5 out of 5 stars vampire Heart.......2007-05-13

I have both movies Miss Congeniality and they are funny comedys. I love Sandra Bullock as an actress.I have other movies she has done and they are also great.

5 out of 5 stars FBI Sandra - rulezzzz !!!.......2007-01-25

The directors have done a superb job. Making Sandra Bullock very believable as a sloppy woman not taking care of herself. Some good comedy and a 'nice' story. A general all round, this film won't have you guessing the plot, but it does invoke that feel good factor.

This film was incredibly funny and it must be viewed several times before all the jokes and gags have been made clear. Fantastic movie!

5 out of 5 stars Just Love this gal! Sandra Bullock is just wonderful in every part she plays!.......2007-01-21

This gal could do a movie standing on her head and I'd love it. She is one of my favorites. She is a gifted actor. She is funny and plays the comedian and yet can take being humiliated like water off a duck! She can be serious and tug at your heart. She is talented enough to meet it all. I have just about movie she performs in. She's a trip...literally!

3 out of 5 stars Miss Congeniality.......2007-01-10

An interesting, if implausible, plot. The story is followable, which is often not true of contemporary films. The plot is well timed.

The Little Vampire is excellently acted and great to look at. Stuart Little's Jonathan Lipnicki carries, on his pint-sized shoulders, his every scene as 8-year-old Tony, befriender of vampires, and the Scottish setting lends itself nicely to spookiness. But where this video earns most points is in the plot department. A continent away from his native California, Tony's having a tough time making new friends when a band of vagabond vampires enters his life through his bedroom window. The encounter seems pure coincidence at first, but then the scary truth surfaces: Tony, though he's not a vampire himself, has "sympathy for our kind," as the dad of the bat-linked brood puts it. Visions of vampire happenings from generations past invade the third-grader's consciousness, and they hold the key to the clan's current gypsy-like predicament. Through his clairvoyance and, by extension, the discovery of a long-lost amulet, the mostly benevolent bloodsuckers are able to reclaim their rightful status as proper cave dwellers in their homeland. Clueless-parent predicaments abound and are cleverer than most--Tony's mom and dad smirk at their son's vampire-obsessed imagination until the cape-draped heads of the clan drop by for a visit--and the gang's adventures eluding a bumbling vampire hunter are genuinely chuckleworthy. At-home Twizzler munchers ages 8 and older won't soon tire of this charmer of a Transylvanian transplant. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-06-27

This movie is a really enjoyable movie for all ages. My son will not stop watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite Movie for MONTHS.......2007-03-30

This movie is so cute! The flying vampire cows are insane. Funniest part of the movie is the farmer who keeps going in to check on the cows! Cute, sweet fun. Get it and watch it with your kids. Very funny movie.

This movie is pretty old so actors are pretty well grown by now BUT my daughter has a HUGE crush on boy who plays Rudolph. Be prepared Moms and Dads as he is a little cutie and your girls will flip over this mini heart throb.

4 out of 5 stars It's Great........2007-03-18

My little sister and I love this movie. So does my mother and she does not like vampire movies, but she say's that this one was good.

5 out of 5 stars A great feel good movie.......2007-01-10

My Grandson has worn out two VHS tapes of this movie. It is one of those movies you can watch over and over with your kids and always find something else to enjoy. We bought him two DVDs for Christmas one for his house and one for ours.
The vampires in this movie are not out to harm anyone, just be a "normal" family. The flying cows are a giggle.
Grade school kids should be fine with this movie, preschool kids may need an adult to watch the first time.

5 out of 5 stars not too scary, but maybe alittle, kid's show.......2007-01-03

This is one of my 5 year old's favorite movies. I bought it after renting it about 10 times from Blockbuster. It is a kid's show, but watch it with them at first if your kids are little. Some of the scenes could be a little intense for first time viewers. However, most of them are humorous and the scary of the scary parts wears off. I love the vampire cows especially.
