Oldie But Goodie.......2007-04-05

I first saw this movie when I was a child, it catching my attention as my mother watched it in the livingroom. I could never get into an old black and white movie I didn't think. I am happy to be able to own it now and hopefully, it will catch the attention of my own children someday so I can share with them. There are some heartbreaking moments in this movie that are hard for me to watch over again. But if a movie can touch you the way this does, it is worth watching over and over; and a "have to" to own for classic movie lovers.

I expected the movie to have a "rough" appearance. After all it is a very old film. The issue I have is that there is a scene missing. It happens to be what I consider the best part of the film. It is when Cary Grant's character is forced to appear before the judge with the little girl to plead his case on gaining legal custody of the child. The scene begins with him coming into the court chambers. The judge discovers that Grant's character is unemployed then turns to tell the child welfare advocate played by Beulah Bondi, that the matter should not have even been presented before the judge. The next scene I see is Cary Grant's character carrying the child up the stairs in the apartment to his wife played by Irene Dunne to inform her that the child is theirs because the judge allowed them to legally adopt her. The part that is missing(based on a previous viewing of the film on T.V.) is when Grant tearfully pleads with the judge to allow the couple to retain custody to adopt the child. I felt it was one of the finest performances Cary Grant ever did in any movie and I was very dissappointed to find it missing in this Dvd. Hence the reason for the 3 stars. I love the movie, it is a shame that that scene has been omited for whatever reason.

Who hasn't found they wife tear streaked and surrounded by wet tissues after watching this movie? The movie is an old black and white classic and should have been restored before it was put onto DVD. Lots of static and occasional fuzzy images. Either my wife doesn't notice or she doesn't seem to care.

Grant and Dunne Reign Supreme in an Unabashedly Sentimental Marital Soap Opera.......2007-01-07

The assured hand of master filmmaker George Stevens makes the third and final pairing of Cary Grant and Irene Dunne more than an emotionally satisfying experience. Unlike the first two films - Leo McCarey's "The Awful Truth" (1937) and Garson Kanin's "My Favorite Wife" (1940) - this wholly sentimental 1941 tearjerker is not remotely a screwball comedy. That's not to say Grant and Dunne do not exude their customary charm and grace in their roles. They do in spades and continue to show the easy rapport that made them so compatible in all their films together. The film is also an early, uncommonly mature look at the challenges that arise with marriage and adoption, a precursor to later accomplished films like 1967's "Two for the Road".

Written by Morrie Ryskind (who wrote the classics, "My Man Godfrey" and "Stage Door"), the time-spanning story of Julie and Roger Adams is told in flashbacks as Julie plays her collection of 78's on an old Victrola. Just as she is about to leave Roger, the songs spark memories of defining episodes from their courtship and marriage. The early part of their relationship is played out fully with the stars' wit and charm as Roger attempts to pick up Julie by buying a pile of records at the store in which she works (even though he doesn't have a record player). They marry, and when he gets a career break as a reporter in Japan, she joins him and announces her pregnancy. This brief interlude is most amusing in hindsight as it shows a very stereotypical view of pre-WWII Japan right out of "Madame Butterfly" (the film was released a mere eight months before Pearl Harbor). In an intriguing display of early special effects, the 1923 Tokyo earthquake destroys their home, and she loses her baby and any chance of future conception.

This intractable loss becomes the impetus for the rest of the story, as they come back to California and attempt to adopt while running a local newspaper. They eventually adopt and raise a daughter from infancy, Trina, but further tragedy ensues to a palpable breaking point. As the classic film stars that they truly were, Grant and Dunne show how skillfully they can balance drama and comedy with a heavy emphasis on the humanism of the characters. Grant, in particular, has a heartbreaking scene where Roger begs a judge to allow Julie and him to keep their baby daughter despite their dwindling economic circumstances. Edgar Buchanan (long before his lazy Uncle Joe on TV's "Petticoat Junction") and Beulah Bondi provide able support as their devoted friend Applejack and Miss Oliver, the compassionate adoption agency worker, respectively. With no extras, the 2002 DVD has a decent enough print, though the film is in need of a more through restoration.

Lovely movie! The print's not so bad.......2006-08-09

This made me smile, brought tears to my eyes. It caught the attention of my husband (who never watches old movies with me), my 5 year old daughter sat through the whole show (I noticed some laughter, and then some quite moments from her). Really, they don't make movies like this anymore! It's honest, something we can relate to. It's left me with an impression, that made me write this review. I would love to share this with everyone.

The print is actually bearable, not as bad as some reviews, well, at least I sat through it all!

Good film; Annoying DVD.......2007-07-01

The other reviews describe the film quite well. Irene Dunn and Cary Grant are entertaining and excellent actors. Edgar Buchanan is great. However, there are a few annoying things about the DVD. There are several places where it skips and jumps. Also, RE has placed their logo in the lower right hand corner of the entire film. I am sure that this will not bother some people, however, I find it quite annoying. I will probably watch this on an old VHS rather than the DVD in the future.

An Old Phonograph.......2007-06-10

George Stevens framed this entire film using flasbacks, an old phonograph playing the songs from various stages in the lives of two people who fall in love and are nearly torn apart by tragedy. The screenplay of Morrie Ryskind based on a story by Martha Cheavens is sentimental and heartwrenching. Cary Grant and Irene Dunne make it all seem real and director Stevens gives the film a romantic glow which makes this one of the most fondly remembered films of the 1940's.

The story opens as Julie (Dunne) is getting ready to leave Roger (Grant) because of the pain caused by a tragedy in their lives he can not talk about so that they can begin to heal. She laments that they simply don't need each other anymore. When she finds an old stack of records she begins to trace the various stages of their love through the memories recalled by each song.

Roger sees Julie through the window of the record store where she works, and though he doesn't have a phonograph player, he ends up buying a big package of songs just so he can spend time with her. He pretends he is going her way after work and it isn't long before she becomes "his funny little redhead." There are some wonderful scenes like Julie and Roger sitting in a cabana by the beach reading fortune cookies which gives the story a very romantic atmosphere.

When Roger, who is a reporter, has a chance to go to Tokyo for a few years, the two get married and have a truncated honeymoon on a train which results in them becoming prospective parents. But an earthquake takes their happiness away and prevents them from having another child. Only when Roger gets an inheritance do they move back to the states and consider adoption while he starts the small town paper he has always dreamed of. What follows is warm, sweet and heartbreaking, and will result in Julie standing at the phonograph as she recalls their lives together before leaving.

Whether their love and marriage can be saved is only resolved in the last few moments of this beautiful film. Edgar Buchanan as Apple Jack is absolutely wonderful as he lends both support and humor to this true screen classic. Beulah Bondi is also memorable as the kind Miss Oliver, going out of her way to create a family for two people who love each other. A warm and sentimental film every film lover needs to own.

THE POWER OF MUSIC..........2006-11-29

This is a wonderfully sentimental melodrama, which is deftly directed by the venerable George Stevens. With its stellar cast, the film delivers a heartwarming story.

The film opens onto a scene of a woman, Julie Adams (Irene Dunne), who is in the process of leaving her beloved husband, Roger (Cary Grant). It seems that they are no longer able to communicate with one another, and their marriage has headed south in the wake of tragedy. Before she leaves, Julie puts a record album on the victrola, and suddenly memories of the marriage come flooding back.

The viewer sees vignettes from the marriage in flashback, as Julie plays one old record after another. The memories allow the viewer to see how the formerly happy couple met. Fittingly, they met in a record store where Julie worked. Roger was a newspaper reporter at the time. Their meeting was quite romantic, and, of course, inevitably, they marry.

When Roger is sent on assignment to Japan, Julie follows but so does tragedy. They return to the states and settle in the small town of Rosalia, California, where Roger tries his hand at publishing a small hometown newspaper. As a result of what happened in Japan, however, they are unable to have children. Consequently, a small cloud looms on their marital horizon, only to be righted by their long time friend with the improbable name of Applejack Carney (Edgar Buchanan).

Roger and Julie decide to adopt and do so with the help of a Ms. Oliver (Beulah Bondi), a kindly woman who is able to see the love that Julie and Roger would bring to a child in need of a home. So, five week old Trina comes into their lives and burrows into their hearts. There, she stays until tragedy, once again, strikes the household years later. This tragedy serves to bring the now unhappy couple to this impasse in their lives.

Irene Dunne is simply sensational in the role of Julie, the woman who is the mainstay in the lives of those around her. She imbues the role with such warmth and emotion that the viewer can feel those emotions with her. Trust me when I tell you that you will need a box of tissues handy. It is definitely a five hanky tearjerker. Cary Grant, looking impossibly handsome, is wonderfully cast as the impulsive, easygoing, and impecunious Roger, who is brought down to terra firma by his well grounded wife, Julie, and finds happiness that he never thought possible when he became Trina's father.

Edgar Buchanan is heartwarming as the friend and general factotum who is always around to pick up the pieces and help right what has gone wrong. Beulah Bondi is terrific as the well-meaning Ms. Oliver, who helps the Adams family achieve their dream. There are several children who play Trina at different stages in her life. All are wonderful, but the most adorable one is the one who plays the role of one year old Trina (Baby Jane Biffle). The viewer will understand fully why her adoptive parents are so besotted by her. This is a wonderful melodrama that will tug at one's heartstrings. Beautifully acted and well-directed, this film is a gem.

MY TWO CENTS WORTH SAYS WOW!!.......2007-02-28

For the first cent, MARENGO FILMS' remastered version (forget the earlier reviews) of PENNY SERENADE is now the best copy of this title to be found on the DVD market. And trust me, I've been through them all. The muddy picture and hissing sound of all other competing versions have been eliminated by the careful remastering of MARENGO. Finally, you can now see this wonderful movie with a beautiful picture and clear, crisp sound.

As for the second cent, the remastering of HIS GIRL FRIDAY is also meticulously accomplished. The picture is clean and sharp and the sound is loud and clear. And how can you argue with the price? You get two bonafide classics in wonderful transfers for the same price that you generally pay for just one DVD title.

Bravo to MARENGO for two jobs well done!!

Irene Dunne Is Great!.......2006-03-15

Irene Dunne is so underrated, she is a great comic and dramatic actress. I have watched every movie I can get my hands on.
Just the last few years it seems more and more people are discovering Irene Dunne. Love Affair (original Dunne) great! Penny serenade, fantastic!

The Best Copy Around.......2006-02-11

I puchased the Marengo release of Penny Serenade, and boy was I thrilled. This has to be the cleanest copy of this movie I have ever seen. Granted it is not perfect but it is far superior to any other releases I have viewed. For me "His Girl Friday" was just a welcome extra......Thanks, Anita

Good Movies But Especially My Girl Friday........2005-10-07

I really like Cary Grant and this DVD has two of his movies, His Girl Friday and Penny Serenade. They are both good movies but personally I think His Girl Friday is the better of the two and in this one Cary Grant stars as a newspaper editor who does eveything he can to keep his star reporter (Rosalind Russell) who also happens to be his ex-wife from retirement and getting married to an insurance agent played by Ralph Bellamy. The whole cast is wonderful but especially Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Penny Seranade is good and about a couple with marital problems who want to adopt a child and his costar is Irene Dunne who starred in two screwball comedies with him, My Favorite Wife and The Awful Truth but truth to be told I preferred their screwball comedies to their dramatic movie. Penny Serenade is good but it's a little too melodramatic for my taste!

The Loss of a Child Can Strengthen a Marriage--or Destroy It.......2007-03-20

This old movie brings back old memories. For instance, one recalls the time that there were no Pampers and only cloths folded and pinned into diapers were used on infants.

One difficulty follows another. An earthquake destroys the building in which the couple is spending its honeymoon in Japan. Later, the couple wants a child, but the prospective mother has a miscarriage. They decide to adopt a 2 year-old boy, but only a 5-week old girl is available. Still, they fall in love with her, and name her Trina. They dote on her constantly.

When Trina is a little older, she carries the cake during her adoptive mother's birthday party. She also has a behind-the-scenes role in a Christmas play. She can't wait until next year and her turn in the form of the leading role. But it is not to be. The film doesn't show it, but Trina is no more the next Christmas. Instead, the grieving parents drive a mother and her son to the Christmas play, and are forced to endure the sight of it without Trina.

Their pain is unbearable. Soon, mother and father are hardly even talking to each other. Will the marriage last? Could there be another child in their future? Watch the movie and find out.
