John Huston adapted the first 22 chapters of the Book of Genesis in this mostly silly film that takes us from Creation through Noah's Ark through Abraham's near-sacrifice of son Isaac. This is one of Huston's more personally distant projects, à la Annie or Victory; and for the most part you'd barely know there was even a director involved. On the other hand, Huston does provide some of the only liveliness on screen, playing Noah. --Tom Keogh

Part Brilliant, Part Disappointing.......2007-05-18

Long cast aside by "critics" as a cinematic BOMB, this movie does have its moments. Standout scenes are the death of Abel by Cain, Adam and Eve being driven from the Garden of Eden, Abraham's visit from the Angel of God and the gathering of men at Sodom, blinded by the two Angels. The Sodom scene, with all its wickedness, would be considered "politically incorrect" by Hollywood today, but is a directorial masterpiece. The Noah's Ark gathering of the animals is a commendable assemblage of creatures, but John Houston's portrayal of Noah is much too comical for such a strong Biblical patriarch. Adam and Eve seemed too mechanical, in a very pale Eden, in what should have been a beautifully breathtaking opportunity for the cinematographer of Paradise. And according to scripture, Isaac was probably a bit older than the small actor we see in the film. But George C. Scott believably delivers as Abraham; especially when about to give his son as a sacrifice. Not the best adaptation of Bible stories, but at least the Hollywood of old, was well aware of a large audience for sacred things it seemingly ignores today.

one of the last of the biblical epics, this was a bomb in its initial release, and deservedly so. the movie doesnt know whether it is de mille or italian realism, and most of the sequences (adam & eve, tower of babel) are either laughable or langorous (george c scott & ava gardner as abraham & sarah). yet stuck in the middle is a fine half hour sequence of the story of noah, with director john huston casting himself in the one strong sequence in the movie: replete with the right mix of humor and awe. that half hour isnt enough to recommend buying or renting the dvd, but if you can catch it on tv some day, its worth a half hour of your life.

THE ACTING AND COSTUMES ARE EXCELLENT. THE MUSIC SETS THE MOOD PERFECTLY FOR EACH STORY. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE GREAT. THIS IS A MUST SEE FOR BIBLE ENTHUSIASTS. THE ACTING IS VERY GOOD. YOU FEEL AS THOUGH YOU ARE PRESENT WHEN THE EVENTS ARE OCCURRING.

This film based on the Bible's book of Genesis is something akin to a dramatic reading with visuals. The text of Genesis is read by a narrator, who at times appears as an elderly desert nomad telling the story to a small boy and other members of their extended Bedouin family. These presentations make historical sense, of course, as the biblical tales were passed along as oral history for generations. During the story of the creation of the heaven and the earth, the visuals tend toward nature photography alternated with scenes of the venerable storyteller, but during later episodes, actors play some of the characters from the Bible. A story of Adam and Eve is dramatized in a film montage, as are the stories of Cain and Abel. More inventive cinematography, utilizing modern clips of warfare and destruction, are used to illustrate some Old Testament pronouncements about the evils practiced by mankind. Noah's instruction to build the ark is portrayed, and in an elaborate segment, the building of the ark and its use during the great flood is shown. This film may not provide any new insights into the stories of Genesis, but the dramatizations coupled with the readings from the text are often beautifully filmed, and those interested in experiencing the visual atmosphere of the biblical stories will enjoy the presentation. --Robert J. The deluge of actions pact stories makes us miss the sublime. That is the case in this film. The film works at capturing the ugliness of sin and the sublime beauty of the Word of the Lord. Give it a chance.

I'm disappointed too!.......2005-12-29

Yes, I was disappointed in this video, and I regret purchasing it. I also expected more of it, having enjoyed very much previous releases like Esther, Jeremiah, and Solomon. Much of my disappointment was in discovering that most of it was not a dramatization; the scenes being viewed often did not relate to the story being told, and this reduces the video's usefulness as a teaching tool for Bible study. I differ with some previous reviewers in that I felt there was not enough concern for Biblical accuracy in some spots, notably in the story of the flood. Noah's ark as pictured did not appear to be of the dimensions or shape clearly described in Genesis 6:14-16. Genesis 7:13 lists 8 persons who entered the ark; the grandchildren of Noah were not born until after they left the ark when the flood had abated. In the movie, there appears to be a small crowd getting on board the ark, including a lot of children. And all those leaks in the roof of the ark that could be seen constantly dripping do not make sense at all: if Noah was a good enough builder to build a vessel that was seaworthy and did not leak below the water line, why is there any reason to think he was incapable of building its roof to not leak? After all, he followed God's instructions ("according to all that God commanded him, so did he" Gen. 6:22), applying tar both inside and outside the ark (Gen. 6:14). These scenes do not respect the details of the story as given in the book of Genesis. What is the point of claiming to make a movie based on the Bible, and then not basing it on the Bible?

Great.......2005-07-09

I must admit when first watching this, I was feeling dissapointed in that it's not entirely like the other movies in the Bible series. However, once getting into it I began to see why it was made how it was.

Nowhere in the movie is there a date as to when the old man or his family were living. It shows how the story of Creation up to the Flood were passed on from genertion to generation. Families knew their history beyond their own generation (something lost in our culture). This is how it was done back in the day. Remember there was a time when Scripture was not yet written down. It was preserved and kept in this fashion. Cool thing, the Hebrews had common understanding of the Lord, without anything written. Ever wonder how the Israelites in Egypt would know who the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is? Because it was passed on.

With that in mind, this makes for a great movie. The quiet parts give time to reflect on God's creation. God cares about all of it, not just people. He said that all He had made was good.

serene and satisfying.......2003-12-09

This Ermanini Olmo film is filled with magical moments, taken at a leisurely pace; if your usual viewing fare is action packed and music video speed, you might want to pass this one by.
The visual beauty of the panoramic Moroccan landscapes and its handsome people are wonderful to watch, but the main attraction here is the narration by the great Paul Scofield ("A Man for all Seasons") in a poetic reading of this section of the Bible.
The script fairly accurately follows the first nine chapters of Genesis, with a few added portions, like excerpts from the Song of Solomon, Leviticus Ch. 26, and Psalm 50.

Omero Antonutti plays "the grandfather" and "Noah", and the rest of the cast are simply listed as "people of Morocco". The children are exquisite, and the costuming gives the feeling of ancient nomadic times.
The score by Ennio Morricone includes tribal folk music and predominantly, the strange and glorious sound of "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares".
I find this film extraordinarily soothing, and the words are like music and calming to the mind and soul; I like to put this film on while I am working, or when I just want to turn the frantic tempo of today's world down a notch.

Disappointed.......2003-11-27

I, too wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this movie, and I bought it from Amazon! I didn't even watch the entire movie. I got through the first 30-40 minutes and could see that it wasn't going to get any better. Most movies I watch, I like something about them and the majority of them would get two stars or better. This is one of those rare instances in which, if it were possible, it wouldn't get any stars. Don't waste your money.

Charlton Heston who has thrilled me in BEN HUR (for which he won his Academny Award), THE TEN COMMANDEMENTS and my favorite EL CID is remarkable in this telling of the Book of Genesis. This combines his brilliant acting with the magnificent scenery of the Holy Land and it gives us beautiful music and works of art from great masters of the past as well.
What more can one want from entertainment: Inspiration, uplifting and enlightenment -- if you want more than that go to the Bible and read the real book of Genesis or the real Passion of Jesus.

I had almost forgotten how good the story of Genesis was. How could something this good slip my mind? Charlton Heston is one of greatest actors of our generation, but unfortunately, I can't think of any of the titles of his movies, at this time.

It has been years since I studied Genesis in school... so many years, that I had actually forgotten about many of key elements of the story. That's why I was so happy when I heard that Charlton Heston's presentation of Genesis would be available on DVD. The DVD provides all of us with a helpful reminder about just how powerful the story of Genesis is.
