If you grew up watching Roy and Gene( and all the others) at the movies on Saturday, or on early 50's TV, then you should enjoy this trip back to when times were simpler. Chases, singing,and a happy ending on a pretty good quality DVD, what else could you ask for????

Roy Rogers, the owner of a western ranch, suspects his highly secretive foreman Banning (Pawley) of the looting his fur traps. He goes undercover as a ranchhand on his own ranch. He begins a romance with trading post proprietress Joan Stuart (Hayes), who has no idea of Roy's real identity. Through his investigation, he discovers that Banning is the head of a gang who has been stealing fur from all the local ranchers and fencing it at the Trading Post. Joan convinces Roy she had nothing to do with the gang. Roy and Joan then work together to capture Banning and his gang of outlaws.

Clean Cut Fun - But Navajos?.......2006-12-01

This classic Roy Rogers tale also stars Dale Evans. In this DVD version you even have an intro scene where these two talk about the movie and a few parts of it that they enjoyed.

Roy is a US Marshall trying to track down wrong-doers. He hangs out at a local ranch, falling for the rancher's daughter. In the meantime, a group of gypsies come into town, and the usual cat-fight erupts between the rancher girl and the gypsy girl over the handsome marshall. There are numerous jokes at the gypsies expense.

Roy eventually figures out who the bad guys are, and what they are up to. He saves the day in a manly yet kid-friendly manner.

These are classics in terms of being family friendly, with a light comedy aspect and little actual bloodshed or cursing. That all being said, for a "Navajo Trail" title, where are the Indians? Where are the Mexicans? All you have are very clean cut Westerners, and a few Spanish Gypsies. I would have loved the story to include more cultures, more of the melting pot of this region. I realize that Roy Rogers was "clean cut fun" - but there's no harm in a movie being a bit educational, too, about the region it covers. It was almost like the Disney World version of what the Wild West was all about.

Where's the tunes?.......2004-09-16

I bought this DVD looking forward to hearing the songs in it but alas no music. Even the Gypsy scene was cut short and no music. This is supposed to be the authorized version by the Roy Rogers Estate and there's no music? Very disappointing. What a waste of money.

Comment on Along the Navajo Trail.......2000-02-10

Although the box lists this title as a 60 minute video, it is actually a full length version with a running time of 65 minutes. That makes this video unique in this regard as previous releases have been the 54 minute TV version. Although not quite as good as some of the other Republic video releases in this series, the picture quality is above average with very good sound quality. This 1945 release is in the era when "Gabby" Hayes and Dale Evans co-starred with Roy. Highly recommended for the Roy Rogers' collector.

The end of the War and the movie industry starts booming.Roy's Movies now pickup a more mature stories,that show how the singing cowboy help rid the U.S.A. of unsavory characters.Indians come to Roy's rescue because he is one of them also. Lets look at the cast,Gabby,Dale, Estelita,Barcroft,the Sons of the Pioneers,when this movie first got rated it only received a three star rating. Review this movie and tell me it don't rate a FOUR STAR RATING.

If you like Roy Rogers.......2005-06-30

If you like Roy Rogers, it may be a good idea to nuy this Black & White movie on DVD. Obviously, this movie is old, the voice is no more perfect and the transfert of the movie on a DVD will not restaure it but it shows a kind of movie that Hollywood has made between 1930 and 1950.

Above average Roy Rogers, below average DVD transfer . . ........2003-05-04

. . . but if you pay under [dollar amount] for a DVD, you can't really complain. Unfortunately, all of Roy's movies will probably be shuffled off to DVD with just as little care. The sound crackles sometimes, and some of Dale's delightful solos are a bit distorted; the picture is fuzzier sometimes than others (even "jumps" once, as though it were a tape), and you have to turn the volume up pretty high compared to typical DVD.

Though the quality leaves at least as much to be desired as one would expect considering the price, "Yellow Rose of Texas" is above average Roy Rogers fare. Included are the classic framed man with a beautiful daughter (Dale, of course), Roy's undercover identity as insurance agent, a stunt with Trigger to save a boy in a runaway wagon, a multi-fisted fight featuring the Sons of the Pioneers (minus Pat Brady, since this is 1944), the classic shot of black "blood" dripping through two ceiling boards to give away the winged fugitive (at a rate that says he must have hit an artery and is in serious need of a transfusion!), and lots more great nostalgia inducers. One number by the Sons of the Pioneers, "Timber," is musically even better than usual. It's also interesting to see Dale Evans before that "Queen of the West" persona, which she was originally so against, was firmly established; you'll hear her sing and see her pout those pretty lips, but she won't be riding a horse. (This is partially due, of course, to the fact that much of this setting has to do with riverboats and shows rather than ranches and the frontier.) Even her hair is different than the typical "Cowgirl Dale" look that we fans take for granted.

All in all, if you want to see Roy and Dale in restored glory, don't bother with the Alpha Video releases. But if you want to see them on DVD at all, you may have to settle for these, and "Yellow Rose of Texas" is a perfect place to start.

Good sing-along title song........2003-04-18

Roy Rogers portrays a singing cowboy insurance investigator on a showboat. I know it sounds too weird, but just go with it. Life will be easier. Five years ago Dale Evans' father was framed for an express robbery, and he is still on the run. Roy and the sheriff are both hot on Dad's trail while the real crooks make more mischief. This is a lesser effort by RR and crew. This is one of those "modern" Westerns that feature autos as well as horses. From the complaint department, the emphasis on elaborate song-and-dance numbers detracts from the B Western fun. There is some blazing six-gun action, but not enough to give one time to use up an entire roll of caps. It's always good to see Bob Nolan and The Sons of the Pioneers. Gabby Hayes is not in this one. This movie is of moderate interest to staunch RR fans and those who relish the nostalgia of Saturday matinees. Remember the days when every kid on the block wanted to be a cowboy? From that perspective, viewing and ownership is of value. ;-)

Just brings back memories of childhood. Get this one rather than the 'Roy Rogers Theatre' version. No idle chat or cuts. Lovely!

The Real Thing.......2006-09-10

The children of the 1940's loved Roy Rogers. He was the leading box-office cowboy for 10 years. However times were slower then. "The Little Rascals / Our Gang" series of the 1930's is a wonderful series, loved by children and adults of the time; but also made when times were slower. Children and adults today, may not have the patience and appreciation for the charm of "Roy Rogers" and the old "Little Rascals".

Roy Rogers was everything in real life that he plays in the movies. You like Roy Rogers films; if you like Roy. The stories are pleasant, and hold your attention; but not as exciting compared to today's special effects. Many of his films have similar plot style. Some of his stories, like the sheriff being crooked, with a gang of deputies that robs every gold shipment from the mines, with the town helpless, except for the arrival of the hero, seemed far-fetched. However, I later read a historical biography that told this same true story. It was true. Reality is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Roy was the best, in real life and on film, he was the best singer, always some good songs, the best yodeler,(he yodels in his songs in a couple films), he had true close, life-long, friendships with many of his on-screen friends, he was a great shot, and a real hunter, best outfits, his horse, which he owned in real life, did lots of tricks, his hard to win love, Dale Evans, took some effort for him to win in real life, but became a true and romantic love, and his wife. Roy was quite the athlete, he could walk for an hour on his hands. Roy was a good guy in real life, visiting children's hospitals throughout all the States.

Reading about Roy and Dale's off-screen lives, in their great book, "Happy Trails", makes their films endearing. The book tells how Dale was not at first interested in the real, cowboy, Roy; because she wanted to be a glamorous, city, singer, (it is best to read it) however, in summary, Roy does save her in a real life, adventure, incident, sweeping her off her feet. Their romance on-screen plays so interesting; because of their true romance off-screen.

I like the "Happy Trails Theatre" versions best. (This is such a version). A before and after segment, made many years later, is hosted by Roy and Dale, in their later years. They always have a guest.

The "Dont Fence Me In" song in this film is a good song.

I have seen 40 Roy Rogers films, and liked them all. Roy and Dale were good people, of an era gone by, the era of Walt Disney and Shirley Temple. Roy's films, not found here, can be found on RoyRogers dot commmmmm. "The Television Collection Vol.2" of Roy's has excellent songs, with guests, and is a pleasant surprise.

2/3 of perhaps the best and funniest Roy Rogers movie.......2004-07-24

Don't Fence Me is a 5-star Roy Rogers-Dale Evans movie which runs 71 minutes (B&W). This Happy Trails Theatre version cuts out about 19 minutes from the original movie. (An introduction and closing remarks with Roy and Dale done for TV in the 1980's adds about 12 minutes, but the film itself runs about 49 minutes in this eviscerated Happy Trails incarnation.)

The original version of Don't Fence Me In became available in 1998 on Republic VHS AIBN B00000EZWW. The audio on the Happy Trails DVD reviewed here is cleaner, raising hopes for an authentic DVD restoration of the whole film at some point. The 2 stars for this DVD are for better-than-nothing and the audio improvement. However, since songs such as Along the Navajo Trail have been edited out, along with much of the comedy--a 13 minute continuous segement is missing-- much of the benefit of better audio is lost. Get the Republic (not the Happy Trails) VHS instead for a delightful 1945 matinee classic.

The Best Roy Rogers Video.......2004-01-08

This video is probibly the best Roy Rogers video there is. Dale Evans is an Eastern reporter/photographer who goes west to find the true story of the long dead Wild Cat Kelly. She meets Roy and Gabby and messes things up for them, but in the end everything works out. Roy and Dale have some funny scenes together and Gabby does a wonderful job. Some of the great songs include Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Along the Navajo Trial and the title song by Cole Porter .

The quality of this video is very good from both visual and sound aspects. In addition this is a full length version with a running time of over 70 minutes as opposed to the 54 minute TV version found in some earlier video releases. This is one of the very best Roy Rogers films. An outstanding performance as the retired outlaw Wildcat Kelly by "Gabby" Hayes adds considerably to the value of this film. This is a must for Roy Rogers' fans

I take issue with the negative review on this movie. I found it a two-hanky movie (for anyone who loves animals), some real acting from "Gabby" (who seldom, if ever, played a drunk) and even a surprise ending. Jack Holt is excellent as the heavy, and Roy is far from the usual super-cowboy character in this. (The "California" character mentioned in another review was played by Andy Clyde, and I don't think he ever appeared in a Rogers movie -- mainly in the Hopalong Cassidy and Whip Wilson series.) This is one of two movie versions of how Roy got Trigger, but much the better one.

The Best Of Roy Rogers.......2000-06-10

This movie-My Pal Trigger- is stupendous! It is a touching story of Trigger and the beginning of Trigger's and Roy's relationship. Along with co-stars, Dale Evans and Gabby Hayes, Roy breeds his prized mare, Lady, to Golden Sovereign, the fastest horse in the west. The owner of Golden Sovereign refuses Roy's request, but amazingly Lady and Sovereign run off together. Roy is accused of shooting the stallion. Months later, Roy returns with the unregistered foal of the Golden Sovereign as a token of sympathy to the owner. Golden Sovereign's owner sneers and tosses the foal off as a "half-breed". Roy is not about to let him get away with that and promises to prove to one and all that the best horse in the world is- Trigger.

funny as it wanna be.......2000-04-19

I used to watch the Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy and all the other cowboy shows every Saturday and I never realized how ridiculous they were until I watched this one last fall again. What's with Roy Rogers being in some rodeo glamour-looking costume and everyone else in flannel shirts and jeans? The funniest part is how fast and out of nowhere they get into fights. This movie cracked me up. I only wished that Gabby Hayes would have played a drunk, cuz that's when he's funniest. And how come that skinny guy who used to always play somebody named California or Tennessee couldn't be in it? I wish I knew what movies he was in. Alright that's enough rambling -- if you watched cowboy tv shows, watch this cuz it will crack you up. Otherwise, I wouldn't say you're missing a whole lot.
