Clint Eastwood fired the original director, Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff), and took over the reins of this project himself. He may have had a point: this brutal, thoughtful western, a near-tragedy about a Civil War veteran whose past comes looking for him, is probably Eastwood's most mature frontier drama prior to the Oscar winning Unforgiven. Hoping to build a quiet life in a cooperative community of settlers, Eastwood's Wales blames himself when his enemies attack the homestead, and he has to revert to his warrior instincts to help fend off the threat. The jittery intensity of Sondra Locke (who would be Mrs. Eastwood, at least for a while), and the screen-filling charisma of the late Chief Dan George harmonize beautifully with Eastwood, who had finally figured out how to add depth and texture to his stock-in-trade Man of Steel persona. This one may be too short on action to satisfy fans of Eastwood's Dirty Harry films, or of the Italian westerns he made with Sergio Leone, but it's an honorable effort. --David Chute

Customer Reviews:
The Outlaw Josey Wales.......2007-07-05
One of Eastwood's finest and most underrated directorial efforts, "Outlaw" leaves behind the actor's Man With No Name persona for a slightly more honorable, if no less laconic, hero out for vengeance. Though he's a wanted renegade with an agenda, Wales befriends a wry Cherokee, Lone Watie (George), and two settlers, old-timer Paula Trueman and sultry Sondra Locke. Cheated of his own family, Wales forms--and then must defend--a make-shift community where trust and respect are the founding pillars. Great acting, exquisite photography, and an engaging story about alliances make for a rousing, thoughtful Western. Open your door for this Outlaw.
One of the great westerns.......2007-06-07
Until Dances with Wolves and then Eastwoods own Unforgiven this was the best western post 1970. Eastwood plays the title role who is a certainly a match for the man with no name, but unlike that character Josey Wales is not amoral, in fact quite the contrary.
This is the first movie that Eastwood directed that made people sit up and notice him as a filmmaker rather than an action hero. Some classic trademark Eastwood lines are in this film, perhaps the best of which is:
Bounty Hunter - "You're wanted Wales"
Josey Wales - "Reckon I'm right popular. You a Bounty Hunter?"
BH - "A man's got to do something for a living these days"
JW - "Dyin' ain't much of a livin' boy"
The difference with this film (over say the spagetti westerns) is that Eastwoods character gradually becomes part of a family like gang of people. Most noteably an aging Indian (played by Chief Dan George) which makes for some wonderfully understated comic moments. One of the strengths of this film is you do care what happens. Yes there are gun fights and people are killed but in the end there is a sort of reconcilliation.
Already by this stage of his career Eastwood had a regular team around him to make the film. Standout amongst which is Bruce Surtees cinematography. This really is beautiful looking film.
Skip the politics, enjoy the movie.......2007-05-05
Reading many of these reviews you can't escape the infantile need so many dopes have to stake this movie with their own personal lingering issues about a variety of issues; U.S. foreign policy, the Civil War (or in their vernacular The War for Southern Independence), politically correct thinking and more. For the love of God, just enjoy the movie!
This is one of Clint's finer moments and is an irresistable blend of action, character, humor, and glorious Western eye candy. The dvd that I purchased was ten bucks and featured two documentaries about it, the first time I'd ever seen such behind-the-scenes bits about this great movie. A pretty good deal for the price.
Avoiding five stars because it is just a bit too long, due largely to the wholly cutting room floor scenes with the dreadful Sondra Locke and the credibility straining manner in which Josey avoids getting shot for the most part, it is still a highly enjoyable ride.
If you want to use this as a conduit for your own politics, spare the rest of us your armchair punditry and go start up a blog or start a thread on the Limbaugh website. For those who relish a great action packed Western, rent it, buy it, enjoy it. Clint doesn't get much better than this.
One of Clint Eastwood's best action movies.......2007-04-13
"The Outlaw Josey Wales" gets 4-bones, the highest possible
rating in the "VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever" book of
reviews. So it's up there in the same rarified atmosphere as
is Casablanca.
Although a little longer than most movies, it's rich
combination of action and pathos holds your interst. The last
scenes involving Josey's face off with indian chief Ten Bears
are vintage Eastwood.

I enjoy a good western about the civil war and this is a great one to watch with a bowl of popcorn.

Chuck Norris fans will find Lone Wolf McQuade to be one of his best. Playing a rebellious Texas Ranger, Norris single-handedly wipes out an entire gang of horse thieves--and that's just the opening scene. From there the plot involves arms smuggling, McQuade's daughter being kidnapped, and a dwarf in an electric wheelchair. But the movie's real trump card is a face-off between Norris and David Carradine of the TV show Kung Fu, who plays a badass villain with a penchant for argyle sweaters (though truth be told, Norris's wardrobe is very 1980s as well). Barbara Carrera makes a suitable bad girl/love interest and science fiction fans will enjoy some familiar faces (Robert Beltran, who would later be part of Star Trek: Voyager, and William Sanderson, a supporting actor from Blade Runner). All in all, an action-packed romp with a reverent, almost mythological view of the Texas Rangers. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Martial arts master Chuck Norris (The Delta Force) takes on kung fu king David Carradine (Kung Fu) in this modern-day western/action adventure that packs a wallop! An Â"unabashedly action-oriented and skillfully crafted filmÂ" (The Hollywood Reporter), Lone Wolf McQuade is simply Â"a thrill machineÂ" (LA Herald-Examiner)! Legendary renegade Texas Ranger J.J. McQuade (Norris) is fierce with his gun Â- but lethal with his black belt! When his teenage daughterÂ's life is threatened by hijackers attempting to steal a truck full of weapons and ammunition, the job becomes personal for McQuade. Uncovering a colossal arms-smuggling outfit that is selling guns and ammo to terrorists all over the world, McQuade comes face to face with its kingpin, Rawley Wilkes (Carradine) Â- a world-renowned martial arts expert who has never lost a battle! Does the Ranger have what it takes to save his daughter and his honor Â- or has he finally met his match, and ultimatelyÂ...his demise?
Customer Reviews:
Not how I remembered it.......2007-07-05
I've been a Chuck Norris fan since I saw this movie a number of times when it came out in theaters years ago. As I watched it again after purchasing the DVD recently, I was extremely disappointed with the plot, script, and direction. However, Chuck Norris, as the lone wolf Texas Ranger, turned a zero-star movie into a two-star movie that wasn't a complete waste of time ... but it's not a movie I would watch again.
Happy with Lone Wolf McQuade.......2007-05-17
I was very happy to get this movie. I have had trouble finding it locally. I just wish it was closed captioned as I have trouble hearing. Thanks
An Old Favorite.......2007-04-14
A must-have for Chuck Norris fans. Masterful martial arts action, and the added bonus of seeing Kung Fu star David Carradine, too! Norris always shines as a Texas Ranger.
LONEWOLF MCQUADE.......2006-11-07
An excellent movie. Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger is at his best. Its an oldy but a goody made in 1983.
Its a story of love set in an western action adventure genre. When the bad guy (David Carradine) kidnaps his daughter Chuck Norris rises to the challenge and over comes all odds in this excelent martial arts adventure. Coupled with sexy love scenes with Barbara Carrera, this movie is a must see. I give it two thumbs up.
Chuck Norris is the man!!!.......2006-08-31
If you like Texas Rangers, guns, karate, beer, and great dialogue, then you love this movie. Imagine Walker Texas Ranger and then make him even more bad a**. Trust me you will like this movie or Chuck will roundhouse kick you in the face.

Description
Set in the Texas Republic in the early 1840's, a time in which three cultures - Anglo, Hispanic and Comanche - were in furious conflict over the same harsh land, we are introduced to Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call, the heroes of LONESOME DOVE. Gus (David Arquette) and Call (Johnny Lee Miller) are young Rangers, ripe for adventure, and they get it with the Texas-Santa Fe expedition, and ill-conceived effort on the part of some freebooters and adventurers to capture Santa Fe and annex New Mexico. Led by the land pirate Caleb Cobb (F. Murray Abraham), and guided by the legendary Bigfoot Wallace (Keith Carradine) and his mountain-man friend Shadrach (Harry Dean Stanton), the group fights several engagements with the great Comanche warchief Buffalo Hump (Eric Schweig), is whittled down by the silent Apache, Gomez (Victor Aaron), and is captured without resistance by the Mexican army. Marched south by a resolute Mexican officer, Captain Salazar (Edward James Olmos), they survive bear attacks, ice storms, and the rigors of the barren desert known as the Jornada del Muerto. In the end, they arrive at the leper colony of San Lazaro, where black and white beans are drawn to determine which of the invaders will live an which will die. Accompanying the men on this trek is the colorful, amply fleshed whore known as the Great Western - Matilda Jane Roberts (Patricia Childress). In Austin, Gus meets the love of his life, Clara Forsythe (Jennifer Garner), and in San Lazaro, they encounter the great English lady, Lucinda Carey (Haviland Morris), who, in the startling climax, helps them survive a last encounter with the wild men, led by the great Comanche, Buffalo Hump.
Customer Reviews:
bad movie from a bad prequel of 'lonesome dove'.......2007-04-07
this is a ridiculous overkill of two fascinating characters in the 'lonesome dove'. the whole 2 dvds were just a bunch of idiots kept blabbering, small talking, yammering, blah, blah, blah from the first second to the last minute, just like mcmurty's novels, all the characters were just kept talking, talking, talking in meaningless small talks, almost talked your ears off. it's so controversial and contradictory to those two characters first appeared in 'lonesome dove', gus talked and talked, but call never talked like what was protrayed in this pathetic 'dead man's walk' and the 'comanchi moon', the more logic one is the real sequel, 'the street of loredo', at least gus was dead, and call remained not just silent but more quiet. by watching this horrible movie adaptation from the original book, scripted by the author, the whole movie was doomed to be horrible. because mcmurty simply couldn't omitted those yammering spread all over his original novel, page after page, blah, blah, blah, and we have to find the storyline among those conversations, dialogs, and dug them out of those garbage-like paragraphs. watching this movie was no different. those idiotic morons never kept their mouths shut. blabbering day and night, even during the comanchi attacks. what call showed in this movie and the novel could never developed into a character like what he had become in 'lonesome dove'. because from the very beginning, everybody just quacked and quacked like a school of chickens. drive me nuts. how come these two young characters portrayed in this blabbering novel would and could have developed into the profound older characters in the 'lonesome dove'? once a moron, a coward, an idiot, always would be a one, no matter how old you have become. adding experiences and sophistication in the aging process never happened to a moron, coward or an idiot. how could these two jokes would have survived in that harsh environment is simply beyond me. at least the 'lonesome dove' movie adaptation was close to what the novel read like. and 'the street of loredo' movie was also an adaptations from the novel.
this is a "walk" worth taking.......2006-05-25
dead man's walk is a preqeal to lonesome dove and alows us to meet gus and call as young men. once again we are sent into adventure with these two friends. while i will say that this isn't as good as the first,it is still lightyears ahead on "return ot lonesome dove",and if you like that or just a good western this is one to have.
Old Western.......2006-03-14
My husband had been looking for this DVD for quite some time. He was happy when I found it at such a low price.
A great western with a great cast!.......2006-02-16
I really enjoyed this movie. I really enjoyed the unique plot and the wide ranging cast from everyone to F. Murray Abraham, Johnny Lee Miller, David Arqutte, Jennifer Garner Etc. I orginally watched this movie because I am a big fan of F. Murray Abraham, I really enjoyed him in the role of the villian. This is also the first movie I really ever saw Jennifer Garner in, so it is fun to see her young as well. I really liked Miller and Arqutte's portrayal of the two main characters, I thought it was very well done.
The only complaint I have about this movie is that it is pretty violent, and many of the minorarty characters ( native Americans and Mexicans) are not portrayed with respect. Maybe this was because who the main characters were and thier association with peoples of these cultures...I don't know.
Anyway, if you are looking for a good western, try this one!
would have made a great weekly series.......2005-08-19
Dead Man's Walk is yet another great Lonesome Dove DVD. It's too bad they didn't make a regular series about the adventures of young Gus and Woodrow. It's not too late. Give us a TV series somebody!

Grab your mask and six-guns, kids, 'cuz the Lone Ranger's back and better than ever! Once again, the retro-wizards at Rhino have expertly packaged this welcome trip down TV memory lane, serving up six complete 22-minute episodes of the popular shoot-'em-up series, starring Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful sidekick, Tonto. The first two black-and-white episodes (from 1949) are included as bonus features, reminding us of the masked man's origins, and four consecutive color episodes from 1956 show the series at its peak of popularity. The colors have faded a bit (otherwise these shows look great), but the action's still as brisk as ever; this is kid-stuff produced with intelligence and skill, with well-cast villains (including Glenn Strange and General Hospital veteran John Beradino) and punchy stories that will still delight any baby boomers who look back fondly at TV's golden age. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
The Lone Ranger-The Original Series Vol. 1.......2007-05-14
Another excellent product in a string of excellent products from Amazon
THE LONE RANGER.......2006-02-25
IN TYPICAL LONE RANGER FASHION, YOU GET PLENTY OF ACTION AND EXCITEMENT! MY KIDS LOVE THIS OLD FAVORITE.
Rickey E. Tumlins complaint of video compression.......2006-02-06
I wish to reply to your criticizim of Rhino for the running of a show in what you call Video Compression. The Lone Ranger was origionally filmed at 24 Frames-per-Second. Most shows today are filmed (and run) at 30 Frames-per-Second. I agree with you that the sped-up look (24 fps run at 30 fps) looks fake. However, may I point out that if you were to run that show at the origional 24 frames-per-second it will look somewhat choppy. Running it at 30 looks "Artificially Fast" and thus FAKE. For all of us that like The lone Ranger, this may be a "No-Win" situation. May I suggest that we try to appreciate The Lone Ranger for the classic show that it is (despite the technical glitch). Thanks ! P.S. Actually, my Favorite show is Lost in Space. Season 1 is in Black and White. Oh well, I love it anyway.
Time compressed...............2005-07-24
Why in the world would you want to buy this collection of edited/time compressed episodes. They totally violate my memories of the character. Rhino has normally had a reputation for issuing some of the finest TV programs. This is really below their standards. Don't waste your time or money on this one. I hope that ultimately someone wil issue all the Lone Ranger episodes in their original condition.
Edited Episodes...No thanks Rhino.......2003-03-05
We'll Rhino In their lack of research or un-caring have released edited and/or time compressed versions of this classic series! Traditionally t.v. shows produced prior to the early 80's were made with more show and less commercials in mind. The Lone Ranger went to color It's last two seasons. These shows run 25 unhurried minutes when seen without commericials. Rhino was given edited and worse yet time compressed episodes as their dvd masters. Notice how everything seems rushed and un-natural. Movements are compromised by the digital manipulation of the originl 24 frames per second to the now 30 to 40 frames a second. Nick at Nite and T.V. Land both show edited/time compressed prints. When we buy ANY films or t.v. shows on dvd, we expect them to look fantastic and be UN-CUT and UN-TAMPERED with. These shows are neither. Worse yet, the great black and white origin of the Lone Ranger was originally a THREE PART adventure. Here Rhino provides us with two edited parts leaving the climactic episode off! I understand that Rhino has announced they are releasing 19 Lone Ranger episodes in a box set. Will these be un-cut? Will these be un-fair examples of our t.v. heritage that generations to come will be cheated by? Write your letters kiddies. Let Rhino and the rest know that you want to see these shows as your parents and grandparents saw them.

Terrific In Color.......2006-07-11
Got out this set from its honored place in my DVD collection and re-viewed it yesterday while at home nursing a sprained ankle. What a great way to give yourself some "R & R" !!!!
The Lone Ranger was always a superb television series, but the addition of color near the end of the series' run was a great idea on the part of producer Jack Wrather...and a shrewd
set-up for the upcoming feature film productions. And when Wrather went to color, he did it right. Some of the color work on the last seasons of "The Adventures of Superman" was uneven, but Wrather's "Lone Ranger" and "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon"
shows were photographed gorgeously. The colors in this Ranger collection are vivid and eye-catching.
The stories and acting hold up well, too. When LR creator Geo. Trendle first began shooting this series (as "Apex Film Corp.")in 1949, he had Clayton Moore act somewhat wooden and stiff (Trendle's idea of "stoic & heroic") and directed him to use
perfect diction in the delivering of his lines. After Wrather took over in 1954 this loosened up a bit and allowed Moore a
bit more leeway in his interpretation of the masked Mr. John Reid. Moore took the opportunity to infuse more and more of himself into the Ranger (while still using good grammar) and the meld became so perfect that the two---the actor and the character---virtually became one (as was also the case with William Boyd as Hopalong Cassidy and Duncan Renaldo as the Cisco Kid).
Jay Silverheels likewise had become the quintessential Tonto.
The three-episodes-a-week shooting schedules used in those days (for a half-hour show it could be done, but the pace was exhausting)
result in something one notices immediately in this collection---wherein episodes can be watched back to back; that being that the same actors can often be seen(sometimes in the same costumes) over and over again. In one show a young would-be
Sheriff is helped by the Ranger and Tonto to rid a mining town of bullying outlaws, and, the next thing you know, this same young fellow (now wearing a stick-on mustache) is a deputy town marshal , helping the Ranger help the blinded chief marshal get back his hope for living. And one of the baddies from the previous episode is in this one as well, wearing the same clothes. When you watched these on t.v. years ago...shown a week apart...and often out of shooting sequence...you didn't catch this sort of thing. Only now can you see how they worked this and it gives you a greater appreciation of how much inventiveness and ingenuity went into these rush-job productions.
Clayton Moore's principle stuntman, Bill Ward, shows his stuff to good effect in these episodes. Ward was great at "ape-ing"
Clayton Moore's carraige and body language and this makes the
doubling much more effective and exciting. Ward...not that well known compared to other Hollywood stunt stars like Yakima Canutt,Dave Sharpe,Tom Steele, or Dale Van Sickle...was, nevertheless, wonderful at his trade. In his athleticism, agility, and coordination, Ward was strikingly similar to Dave Sharpe in his stuntwork. In fact, for a long time this reviewer believed that the fabulous "bulldogging" stunt at the end of the 1956 Warner Brothers theatrical movie "The Lone Ranger" was DONE by David Sharpe (an awesome leap from Silver, coming up from behind stuntman Bob Morgan...doubling "baddie' Robert Wilke...followed by a tremendous rolling fistfight down a steep hillside). This "gag" had all the athletic earmarks of Sharpe, but in his book "I Was That Masked Man", Clayton Moore reveals that it was, in fact, Bill Ward wearing the mask in that amazing sequence. All Ranger fans owe it to themselves to see this great western and to marvel at the climactic fight, but Ward is on his game in this television collection as well, and does a bang-up job of providing exciting physical action on the Ranger's part.
One of the hallmarks of the entire Lone Ranger saga, on radio, in the movies, and on television, was its respect for the American Indians and their cultures. This respect is there in all the Clayton Moore productions, to be sure. This is quite true in an episode called "Ghost Canyon", where cowboy baddies try to crook a local tribe out of their heard of horses. They do this with assistance of the chief's "nephew", the only "bad" Indian around. Turns out, though, that the "nephew" is a fake,
a half-breed ex-con who doesn't really have an Indian heart or soul after all. He has killed the real nephew and taken his place.
This set is enclosed in a "saddlebag" package by Rhino Video that is pretty nifty and attractive. It is a good buy for the money, great nostalgia, and just good old fashioned storytelling
about the kind of hero/role-model for young people that we see
FAR too little of today.
Waiting with my brother to hear the Lone Ranger at 7:30 .......2006-06-12
While it was a pleasure to watch the 'Lone Ranger' and his faithful Indian companion Tonto on television, the really great pleasure and time came from listening to them on Radio. My brother and I used to wait eagerly to hear those famous words,
"A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty Hi-Yo Silver! The Lone Ranger"
In hushed expectation we would wait to hear how the Lone Ranger and Faithful Indian Companion Tonto rode in to the town in trouble, somehow mysteriously solved the problem, got the bad guy, and then rode away.
I sit and remember now so many years later, remember and cannot remember.
The past is gone even if we see some aspect of it again in video or film.
THIS IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE U.K. VERSION.......2006-05-20
After buying a multi-region DVD player so I can watch foreign DVD's I purchased THE LONE RANGER:THE COLOUR EPISODES via Amazon UK.This edition has all 39 of the 5th season color episodes, so if you have or are willing to buy a multi-region DVD player the U.K. Lone Ranger boxed set is a much better buy.And don't be fooled by any misguided reviews criticizing these episodes for being "colorized".All the 5th season episodes were originally broadcast in color.
The Lone Ranger rides again!!!.......2006-03-17
This is a very good collector's item for every Lone Ranger fan. captured in color.
You really ''return to those thrilling days of yesteryear'' an action adveture series with the forever hero of the west The Lone Ranger wearing the white hat against the evil doers.
The package was carefully made like a ''saddle bag'' with alot of info about the radio series as well as the t.v. series.
Highly recomended to a true Lone Ranger fan
Remastered In Color?.......2006-01-01
Remastered in color, like that is some kind of plus? Oh forget it. There is no charm and romance left in the world anymore. Only crass modernism. Lone Ranger was entirely written for black and white. Look at his horse and costume. What, did the hollywood idiots color it in pink so that if fits with their brokeback plot where every man must be as much a sniveling, pathetic weakling as those fairies?

Description
The Lone Ranger was created for radio in 1933 by George W. Trendle. Starring Clayton Moore as the title character and Jay Silverheels as his faithful companion, Tonto, The Lone Ranger went on to become one of the most popular westerns in history. Clayton Moore passed away in 1999, but he has left us the legacy of a lawman that always shot to wound, not kill, and never sought personal reward for his good deeds. Through Moore's portrayal, The Lone Ranger has become a symbol of individualism and justice that transcends its time and genre. (Black & White, PLUS one color episode from the popular television series.)
Customer Reviews:
Good Stuff.......2007-03-04
I bought this on tape, then DVD. I was huge Lone Ranger fan as a child. Yes it is great to watch the Lone Ranger again. I plan to buy an all color episode edition. My daughter watch the tapes with me when she was in high school. What lured her to watch was it had a horse in it. However after watching this and another collection of episodes(also, some Roy Rogers), she said, "How come you had all the good stuff to watch when you were a kid." She was not much impressed with after school or Saturday morning tv.
This is the beginning of the Lone Ranger and his legend. Start here then buy some of the other collections. They are still fun to watch. Just remind special effects are not very much part of old tv stories which had very limited budgets.
The Legend of the Lone Ranger.......2006-03-09
Still not the movie I have been looking for which is in TOTAL COLOR. This tells the same basic story but I wanted the "Theatrical Version" of the Legend of the Lone Ranger (Original)
The origin of a great American hero.......2004-06-12
This three-episode television classic was filmed in 1949 and introduced Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This seminal film details the masked man's origins as a Texas Ranger who was ambushed with five fellow rangers by outlaw Butch Cavendish, the Ranger's recovery with Tonto's help, why he conceals his identity with a mask, how he finds Silver, and their round-up and arrest of the Cavendish gang. Moore and Silverheels were perfect as the two leads in this series and portrayed the characters as no one else could have. They were supported by some of the old-school, venerable character actors of the day such as Glenn Strange, George Lewis, Tris Coffin, George Chesboro, and Walter Sande. The crisp black and white photography stands up well with time and the Lone Ranger "mood music" is a superb, nostalgic accompaniment to the action as the Ranger and Tonto fight for law and order in the early west. Each of the three episodes is wonderfully narrated by way of introduction, and the narration is also used to introduce key plot situations.
Part of American Pop Culture History........2003-04-08
3 episodes of the famous TV show, vintage 1949, edited together into a feature length film, tell the story of the origin of the Lone Ranger. This is the stuff of childhood memories for aging baby-boomers. Clayton Moore's portrayal of the Lone Ranger, and Jay Silverheels as Tonto, is a great memory of Saturday morning TV in the thrilling days of yesteryear. The acting, script, etc. all display B movie quality, at best, but, who cares? The Lone Ranger is a larger than life image that ranks at the top of American pop culture folklore with the greatest of fictional characters. Among staunch Lone Ranger fans, this is a familiar story viewed many times over the years. For the uninitiated, the mask, the silver mine, Silver, and other things are explained. A color episode is also included showing how the TV show changed from 1949 through 1956. The latter episode includes nice color photography, and shows how the heroic image evolved into the red, white, and blue figure on the white horse, complete with gleaming six-guns and silver bullets. As usual, lawbreakers are brought to justice, without excessive or bloody violence, by the end of the half-hour episode. This DVD edition looks great compared to the typical lower-grade VHS editions, all that was previously available. The full screen format is clean and clear, and the audio comes through nicely. As a nostalgic treat, this is wonderful. There is no reason to exclude the kids, if you can get them to put down the electronic games for a couple of hours. 10-year-olds of all ages will enjoy this viewing experience. Ownership is highly recommended. ;-)
The Lone Ranger and Tonto.......2003-01-19
Return to yesteryear with this excellent DVD. An excellent digital recreation of the original series. There are 2 movies. The first is actually the first two series joined together and in B&W. The second is one of the later series and is in COLOR. Note in the B&W version, Lone Ranger has only one standard revolver ! It's crisp, sound transfer is terrific. Get it ! I also learned what "Kemo Sabe" means for the first time ! It's ...... no, find out for yourself by getting this wonderful DVD ! HI YO SILVER, AWAY !

Vintage Garbage - Modern Marketing.......2004-11-26
This DVD set is just plain awful.
Obscure, bottom-of-the-sewer episodes replete with authentic 1950s television broadcast quality.
Avoid this purchase like the plague.
Great looking DVD of 1950s favorites.......2003-08-13
There are plenty of DVDs out on the market today with episodes of television shows from the 1950s and 1960s that have fallen into the "public domain." Many of them are cheaply put together and, visually, look it. Not so with releases from the Falcon Picture Group. By and large, their releases look better than the vast majority of DVDs with older television shows. The reason for this is that they have done digital restoration of the prints included on this set.
What I like about this DVD is the great variety of shows included. Yes, some of the shows, like Dragnet, the Lone Ranger, Red Skelton, etc., are available on other DVDs, but they have also included some shows like Racket Squad, Mr. & Mrs. North, and Sea Hunt that are either rarely or never seen on video/DVD. I hadn't seen Sea Hunt since its syndication run in the 1960s. What a great show and, to the best of my knowledge, this is the only episode available anywhere on DVD (wish there were more episodes of Sea Hunt on DVD).
While this disk is more of a "potpourri" of different types of television shows from the 1950s, Falcon also offers three other DVDs, including ones with television Detectives, Westerns, and Comedies. If you are nostalgic for this great era in television, these DVDs are the way to go. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
still the best.......2007-01-10
I have two other DVDs of the Lone Ranger, and this one has two episodes that I had not seen. There is no better western than this series. The respect that is shown to women, the dignity of Jay Silverheels, and the moral high quality of dialog is not to be equalled. You cannot find simple stories with good moral principles with this level of acting, and the intelligent dialog. A must for all ages
