3 out of 5 stars no title.......2007-06-26

I think this is the weakest of the 4 movies in series. I hated it when they changed actress's in the 3rd. series and then they changed Marty in the 4 th. series.
I loved 1 and 2 and liked 3 and 4

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite of the Love Come's Softly Series.......2007-06-05

I have four of the Love Comes Softly series movies on DVD now and watch them over and over.
This one is my favorite. I am very sad that the story for Missy and Willie didn't continue in the 5th movie, (Loves Unending Legacy) that was on the hallmark channel a couple of months ago. I probably will not buy that one and just stick with the four.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Love Story.......2007-05-30

This is a wonderful story filled with love for all others. The main characters open their home to an assortment of people for a Christmas celebration. Many had not celebrated a Christmas before and responded with the love that was extended to them. It is a movie like those made in earlier years filled with love and compassion for others instead of sex, violence, money, power, and greed. If there were more movies like this I would again go to the movie theatre which I have avoided for 25 years. 4 out of 5 stars wonderful movie.......2007-05-23

This a good family movie. I have read the books and it really follows it well. I was happy to see it made into a movie.

5 out of 5 stars great movie .......2007-05-15

This is a great movie you should get all of them> I really liked them. When i was done i shared them with my best friend and also my mother.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Wagon.......2007-05-13

An excellent western. One that you'll enjoy watching over and over again! Richard Widmark at this best.

5 out of 5 stars Widmark's Best!.......2007-04-04

Being a great Widmark fan, this was always my favorite movie of his as a kid. Great acting by all, especially Mr. Widmark himself. and great on location scenery. The movie has a great feel to it and has you really getting into the characters.
I am looking forward to owning the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-01-21

This is a Western as it should be. In mine opinion, everyone who has a library of Western DVD's should have it; it is superb. A good story with no unnecessary shooting and nearly no unneccesary violance. The story is at all times suspensefull and the end is both satisfying and original. The actors are generally good (on a scale of 1-10 I would rate them 8).There are four exeptions who rate a 9 - Comance Tod, the youngest boy and his sister, and the hysterical and spoiled girl. There are three with lower ratings: the dark haired young adult boy (rating:7), the blond young adult boy who unnecessari shot the rattlesnake (rating:6), and the sheriff (he was completely and without any reason unhumanely cruel (rating:4)

3 out of 5 stars Western .......2007-01-11

Richard Widmark did a good job playing an on the run outcast. He's done better but also done worse. I liked the movie as I am a western fan.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Underated Western!.......2007-01-10

A very good interesting, well written and well acted western! The pace of the film is good and there's plenty of action. Richard Widmark, as usual delivers a very good performance. Beautiful scenery, with a very good musical score. I recommend this western, which you don't hear much about.

Description

Acclaimed director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven, Bad Day at Black Rock, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral) turns the legends of the West upside down in this rip-roaring western comedy about the year Denver was nearly devastated by a droughtof whiskeyand had to have fortywagonloads imported through very harshand very thirstyterritory! Academy AwardÂ(r) winners* Burt Lancaster and Martin Landau team with OscarÂ(r) nominee** Lee Remick inthis beautifully filmed epic adventure that "wins both laughs and thrills" (The Hollywood Reporter)! Also starring Jim Hutton, Brian Keith and Donald Pleasence, this irreverent and literally dry look at frontier life is "possibly the funniest western ever made" (Los Angeles Times)!

4 out of 5 stars Good Flick!.......2007-05-15

This was an entertaining film, epecially the performances of Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, the "Good Republican"....Brian Keith, and Robert Wilke. Though none of these fine actors are generally known for their comedic talents, they pull off this whiskey tale in style!

4 out of 5 stars BIG, BIG WESTERN, BIG, BIG COMEDY!.......2006-03-07

I first saw this great comedy in our local Cinerama theatre in Denver, Colorado in its first release. Our whole family roared and have enjoyed catching HALLELUJAH TRAIL whenever it pops up on TV, which hasn't been too often. It pretty much disappeared over the last 40 years, so it's wonderful that it's been released in all its glorious widescreen panorama on DVD. No extras except the trailer, but this is the only way you'll get to enjoy John Sturges' fine film letterboxed, so pick 'er up! The cinematography (by Bruce Surtees) is gorgeous, making full use of the location filming and expansive skies. The cast throw themselves into their parts with broad gusto, and Burt Lancaster even gets the chance to rib his own image with those fabulous teeth. Brian Keith makes sure we all remember that he is a taxpayer and a good Republican, Lee Remick does a pretty fair drunk act when it comes time, Donald Pleasance as Oracle Jones goes wide-eyed whenever the proper amount of strong whiskey prompts a vision (NOW I SEE IT!), Jim Hutton gets to wrestle with Pamela Tiffin, and Martin Landau gets huge laughs with very few lines as Walks-Stooped-Over (his expressive face gets to do most of the talking). Stalwart character actors like Dub Taylor and John Dehner (the narrator) fill in the rest of the cast, making this a joy from start to finish. Now, be advised: this is not your frenetic slam-bang speed-edited comedy. HALLELUJAH TRAIL plays out its story at a deliberate, almost leisurely pace. It knows that the laughs are there; Sturges (GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, MAROONED, ICE STATION ZEBRA, THE EAGLE HAS LANDED) allows the story to unfold naturally. This was, unfortunately, his only comedy, but he does a fine job. Pop some corn, grab a big soft drink (or maybe something stronger--it's going to be a hard winter in Denver) and laugh along with THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL!

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah Trail- dvd.......2006-01-16

I saw this movie in 1968 and I liked it and found it very entertaining and very funny. I bought it for my daughter and family .

4 out of 5 stars Deserves better..........2007-05-26

The Wagon Train series really deserves better than the release of just three episodes on DVD. Also, the transfer quality in my opinion is pretty poor, although the stories are watchable enough.
It is difficult to overstate the popularity of this series at the time of it's original showing in the late fifties/early sixties. The Ward Bond episodes are the best in my opinion, and apart from a number of episodes released on vhs tape about 10 years ago, there is nothing.
That's a real shame for what was without doubt one of the best western series ever made, with many star actors making appearances. I live in hope that this series will be given the status it deserves and released on DVD in full restored quality soon.

5 out of 5 stars Official Studios Release.......2007-05-18

I too would love to see WAGON TRAIN, Season One in a box set. Instead, we are stuck with the only three episodes legally allowed to be sold (so thank goodness for companies like Alpha). I get to meet actor Denny Miller, who played Duke Shannon on this TV series, this September in Aberdeen at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention to talk about his screen work. He played the role on this series less than 30 times (it was a recurring role) but thankfully one of them, "The Malachi Hobart Story" from january 24, 1962, is available on this DVD so I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Wagon Train-John McIntire.......2006-11-10

Very good, although I expected th have series fearuring Ward Bond but maybe that was my fault.

1 out of 5 stars very sloppy disc here, mine was just bad.......2006-05-06

i took a chance on this because i love wagon train and hoped for a better transfer than the ones i had.
well that didn't work out to good because the transfers were the worst i have seen. sound drop-outs,blurry,and the sound the rest of the time seemed to be off some from the speech. i may have been just me but do be careful

5 out of 5 stars Release the series season by season!!.......2006-04-16

This is another great series that is being wrongfully ignored by the studios. It should be released season by season on dvd immediately! I was a real big fan of especially the Ward Bond-Robert Horton episodes. Those were definitely the best from this series. And Frank McGrath as Charlie Wooster was great comedy relief. PLEASE, which ever company holds the rights....release these episodes soonest on dvd NOW!! You've already waited too long!!

One of very few widescreen productions filmed at the dawn of the talkies, The Big Trail was dismissed by reviewers of the day, little seen, and soon shelved and forgotten--for more than half a century, as it turned out. For movie buffs, it became a sort of Holy Grail. After all, the esteemed Raoul Walsh had directed, the early 70mm angle was tantalizing, and wasn't this the movie that was intended to make a star of Duke Morrison, a 22-year-old former prop man whom Walsh had rechristened John Wayne for the occasion? For curiosity value alone, surely it rated a look.

Restored in the late 1980s and warmly embraced by film festival audiences, The Big Trail proved to be more than just a historical footnote. What were those 1930 reviewers thinking?! Wayne is fresh, exuberant, matinee-idol handsome, and irresistibly charming (only a little purple prose trips him up, and no one should have been asked to speak such early-talkie flapdoodle anyway). The scenario winds through epic settings from the banks of the Mississippi by way of the Grand Canyon to the snows of Oregon and the mountain vistas of Washington, marking both a wagon train's journey and the settling of a personal score between trail guide Wayne and Tyrone Power Sr. as a veritable ogre of a villain. (A villain off-camera, too: Legend holds that Walsh had the actor beaten nearly to death for attempting to force himself on leading lady Marguerite Churchill.) The Big Trail is now an authentic classic, and a swell movie. Probably always was. --Richard T. Jameson

4 out of 5 stars WIDESCREEN IN NECESSARY ..!!!!!.......2007-06-20

This is an historical film that was made in 70mm widescreen and it MUST be shown that way!! What a travesty to show this in 1:33 square format!! History deserves better and so do we film buffs!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great beginning.......2007-03-27

I had a copy of this movie several years ago and lost it. I found it on Amazon and was very happy. I liked John Wayne when I was growing up (he was my hero then). I think that this movie showed what talent Mr. Wayne had. (even though he was twenty at this time). This will be a great addition to my ever growing collection of John Wayne movies.

5 out of 5 stars What a great Western!!!.......2006-12-17

I confess that I did not purchase this video; however, I did watch this movie today on TV. It is a wonderful Western, full of charm, a little corniness, some great humorous scenes, as well as a realistic-looking tale of pioneers crossing the wide-open country through the wild, Indian-settled plains, to a glorious new life in the American Northwest. It is interesting to see John Wayne already taking the moral high ground in several scenes throughout this early movie from 1930, much as he did the rest of his movie career. The long straight-on shot of pretty Marguerite Churchill leaning out the back of her conestoga wagon with a glimpse of cleavage is quite risque for 1930, though maybe not surprising just coming out of the "Roaring Twenties." The scenery is awesome, even in black & white, and the sub-plots are set-up quickly and perfectly early in the film. The scene of lowering people, cattle, and conestoga wagons down the cliff by ropes is a little unbelieveable, but who knows! Some of the scenes like the wagon swept away in the river with paniced women and children being rescued, and the wagon that fell down the cliff look like they were possibly not staged, but the footage was well incorporated into the movie. (It would be interesting to know whether or not these scenes were staged.) This is a hidden gem, not only for John Wayne fans, but for all fans of Westerns!

4 out of 5 stars Boo for this edited version.......2006-12-12

John Wayne's first important screen appearance, this Raoul Walsh picture about a wagon train crossing the plains is quite a major production for its day. Much longer than most pictures of the time (though for some unknown reason shortened by 20 minutes on this DVD release, an unfortunate decision disparaged by other reviewers here), the movie tells a vivid story with the camera. There isn't much plot, but various incidents - a buffalo hunt, an Indian attack, a near-disastrous crossing of a rain-swollen stream - are all captured wonderfully on film. Unfortunately, the spotlight that shined so brightly on Wayne here flicked out after the picture was released, and he would be relegated to churning out numerous quick oaters and action flicks for the next nine years before getting another big break in STAGECOACH. Maybe Fox or somebody will do this picture the justice it deserves and put the whole thing out on DVD so we can get rid of this edited version once and for all.

4 out of 5 stars Please, Fox, give us your best!.......2006-09-10

"The Big Trail" and "The Quiet Man" are clearly the two best of John Wayne's films. Fox has relegated "The Big Trail" to the trash heap . . . considering "old" to be worthless. Should the folks at Fox figure out the "pure gold" that they have, they would put this classic on DVD in its entire original format, with the ENTIRE CLOSING MUSIC, without dropping a single frame of the original. I, for one, would purchase a few of a complete DVD, should Fox "figure it out" and step up to their responsibilities. Fox, that film is not improving with age. It's time you get busy and save this masterpiece before it's too late. If you wish, you could even add a second DVD as a bonus (at extra price) giving a history of the making of the movie . . . whatever. Thousands of us will pay the price. You have a diamond in your hands, and are treating it like a "rhinestone".

Sidney Poitier made his directing debut with this 1972 action comedy with an edge to it. Made at the height of the Black Power movement in America, the film has an unmistakable militancy in its story of a wagon-train guide and a con man who team up to throw a posse of white nightriders off the trail of escaped slaves. Poitier has never been a distinctive filmmaker, and Buck and the Preacher certainly doesn't indicate any early signs of raw talent that later went undeveloped. But the film's energy and sense of fun, hand in hand with the suggestively political zing, make it watchable. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Superb........2005-07-03

Excellent flick! Holds your interest from start to finish.

Harry Bellefonte and Sidney Portier have the chemistry to make this movie really work! And I can't say which actor does the better performance. I especially like the scene where they are bargaining for passage to the West past the Indians, and the Commanches demands more horses.

Mel Brooks later did a funny take off on this movie scene in "Blazing Saddles" where he plays the Indian Chief who, when he sees the Blacks, exclaims "Ah, Schwartzes!"

Anyway, this movie is going into my tape library as one of the best for characterization, if not story.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Film.......2004-08-01

Sidney Poitier went full strength behind the scenes as a Director in this Film classic that dealt with alot of Issues. It showcased the Black West which hasn't gotten enough mainstream shine. mario Van peoples made a little noise with "Posse" but on a whole this element of Black Life hasn't gotten it's full shine in the Mainstream.Poitier&Belafonte truly have strong chemistry here. a must see film.

5 out of 5 stars Brought The Black West to Life Before Posse.......2002-10-25

While I liked Posse, This was the film that brought the Black West to a wider audience. Sidney Poitier as Buck is exciting and Harry Belafonte and Cicely Tyson give him a big helping hand.

5 out of 5 stars Yahoo! Great shoot-em up fun!.......2002-10-17

Looking for fast, shoot-em up fun with a little morality tale attached..this is it! Sidney Poitier is terrific as Buck, the former slave now gun slinger who helps newly freed slaves to homestead out west and guards them night riders trying to bring them back to a dying, post civil war south. Belefonte is charming as the Preacher who gives the good word as well as sling a colt .45. Don't miss Belefonte's terrific "fornication" speech scene. It's topped off with a stellar supporting cast including Ruby Dee as Buck's wife. This movie would be great fun to watch back to back with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid just to compare the relationships between the four characters. So sorry this movie is hard to find. It's great fun, especially for western fans. Happy watching!

5 out of 5 stars Reconstruction.... Western style!.......2001-03-21

Although I originally viewed this film as a child and viewed it then just as a comedic western I have in more later years come to know and understand this story as just one of the many injustices done to black americans after slavery had ended. The events portrayed dramatically and I must assume all too accurately reflect the open hostility and lawlessness that was too often visited upon a people simply in search of a better life.

Historic, dramatic, and comedic... Buck and the Preacher illuminates, educates, and entertains all at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent well-paced Randolph Scott western with a good supporting cast .......2007-01-14

ALBUQUERQUE aka SILVER CITY a big-budget full 90-minute western from 1948. Based on a Luke Short novel and starring the ever dependable Randolph Scott and most peoples favourite western sidekick George "Gabby" Hayes. Although Hayes always played the old timer he was in fact less than 13 years older than the unusually (at times) cheerful Randolph Scott as seen here! Also starring Russell Hayden a real westerner he was probably best known as Hopalong Cassidy's (William Boyd) sidekick `Lucky' Jenkins.

Juke (George `Gabby' Hayes) is the stagecoach driver bound for Albuquerque, New Mexico from El Paso, Texas. On board is Celia Wallace (Catherine Craig) co-owner (with her brother) of the Wallace Freight Company she is delivering a $10,000 business bankroll. Also on board is former Texas Ranger Cole Armin who is taking a job for his uncle John, en-route the stage is held up a man is killed and Miss Wallace is relieved of her bankroll. On arriving in Albuquerque, Cole soon realises that Armin is a dirty word around town, suspecting his uncle knows something about the bankroll heist Cole sets about retrieving the bankroll then switches allegiance to Ted Wallace (Russell Hayden) and his sister. Meanwhile wheelchair-bound John Armin (George Cleveland) who runs the rival Monarch Freighting Company, hires a pretty female spy Letty Tyler (Barbara Britton) to infiltrate and set a trap for the newly formed Wallace (Cole) Armin Freight Company who have just won a contract with the Angel Roost Silver Mine to haul ore down a perilous shale-filled one-way mountain track into town using a ten wagon mule train. Despite a runaway sabotaged wagon with faulty brakes, they still managed somehow to safely negotiate the hill. Celia Wallace met them at the bottom of the hill having come warn them of an ambush by a bunch of hired guns led by John Armin's henchman Steve Murkill (Lon Chaney Jr.) As they set out for town Cole plans a counterattack as they head for the final showdown.

Ray Enfield was the director here; he also directed several more Randolph Scott westerns including the third version of the oft-filmed western THE SPOILERS (1942) in which Scott co-starred with John Wayne and Marlene Dietrich.

This original Cinecolor Paramount film maybe nearly sixty years old (2007) but the transfer to DVD with scene select option is first class. Released under the Universal Western Collection label this is good all round western fare, well worth the money!

    4 out of 5 stars Albuquerque.......2006-07-04

Another wholesome western starring Randolf Scott. Gabby Hayes is also good in a supporting role. There are many good scenic views throughout the movie and the story keeps your interest. It's just another example of movies that can be entertaining without bad language. Enjoy with the family.

4 out of 5 stars An Action-Filled Western From The Forties.......2005-07-25

If you're fond of older movies which were essentially programmers, you might enjoy this. It's a better-than-average Randolph Scott Western with some good elements. Cole Armin (Scott) arrives in Albuquerque ready to take up a job offer made by his uncle, John Armin (George Cleveland). John Armin, aging and confined to a wheelchair, runs things in Albuquerque with a ruthless fist, the sheriff in his pocket, a thug on call and a merciless inclination to destroy any competition. Cole quickly sees what the "job" will call for, quits, and joins up with a brother and sister, Tom and Celia Wallace (Russell Hayden and Catherine Craig), who are trying to start a hauling business. They plan to sign contracts with mine owners to bring ore down from the nearby silver mines. Juke (Gabby Hayes), who has become friends with Cole, signs on to show them the ropes of mule train hauling. There are holdups, fist fights, shootings, fires and a lovely spy (Barbara Britton) as Cole takes on the criminal hirelings of his uncle. The climax comes when Juke and Cole lead ten 12-mule wagons laden with ore down a dangerous shale-filled mountain road from the Angel's Roost mine into town, to be met by his uncle's hired guns.

As I say, it's not bad. Scott always seemed to me to be a credible Western hero. Catherine Craig as Scott's love interest is no actress but she has a calmness about her which is nice and she has a great, low speaking voice. George Cleveland, who one critic called "round and twinkling," was a long-time character actor who usually played granddads. He turned in an effective performance as a ruthless man who will not be denied. Lon Chaney Jr. played his thug with a nice combination of thickness and meanness. The only real drawback for me was Gabby Hayes, who by this time could only play Gabby Hayes. I'm not sure who was the biggest ham in late Thirties and Forties movies, Hayes or Lionel Barrymore. For me, a little Gabby goes a long way.

I think Albuquerque is a better than average Western, made during the time when Hollywood was churning out double features. The DVD picture is a little soft and slightly orange but not enough to be distracting. There are no extras.

5 out of 5 stars "another great Paramount Western ~ Randolph Scott".......2004-09-25

Paramount Pictures release of "Albuquerque" (1948/91 mins), featuring a who's who in great western action, drama and thrill-packed adventure ~ Cole Armin (Randolph Scott) heads the cast with John Armin (George Cleveland), Letty Tyler (Barbara Britton), Celia Wallace (Catherine Craig), Juke (George "Gabby" Hayes), Ted Wallace (Russell Hayden), Steve Murkill (Lon Chaney Jr) ~ under director Ray Enright, screenplay by Gene Lewis and Clarence Upson Young, from the novel "Dead Freight for Piute" by Luke Short, a wonderful western story just waiting to be made into a major film.

With the good guys Scott, Hayes and Hayden ready to set-up a small wagon-freight-hauling business to compete with Cleveland, Chaney and Britton, things are starting to get a little rough with family members Scott and Cleveland (his tyrant Uncle) ~ the freight business isn't big enough for the two of them ~ Scott & Hayden decide to work together as partners to get the big contract with the miners ~ but lookout for Chaney, he wants a piece of Scott and put him permanently in "boot hill" ~ the action quickens with some great hard riding ~ someone has tampered with Scott's brakes on his wagon, all going down a steep trail right behind Gabby's wagon...will everything work out...are the wagons going to make it...can Gabby get out of the way of Scott's wagon...does Scott have what it takes to survive without losing his life are the life of others ~ this is a greedy bunch bent on revenge against our favorite western hero ~ Randolph Scott.

This is not a B-Western, but a major film with a story that will keep you glued to your seat ~ the characters are very real with a fine performance by Barbara Britton, you don't know till the very end which side she's on ~ wonderful portrayal by George "Gabby" Hayes, who has worked with the best John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gary Cooper and William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy)...Gabby is one of the biggest scene stealers in the business, voted the favorite sidekick of all-time in western films during the '30s, '40s and '50s...gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great little Randy Scott western.......2004-06-29

I collect westerns. And when I saw a Randolph Scott available, I bought it, despite never having seen it before. Was very pleasantly surprised, which hasn't always been the case with these kinds of purchases. Great little story, good cast, characters well drawn, plenty of action and Gabby Hayes as well. Transfer is good with only two minor blips that didn't detract from the watching. Good enough to tell when they were using a painted background(not often), rather than the real thing. Color was great. And learned what an early teamster had to do.

I agree with the other reviewers, my only complaint is with the quality of the dvd. It is overly dark in some scenes, and the sound at times is hard to hear. Over all it is worth purchasing when you consider the price. The film contains stock footage from several Paramount movies including the Gary Cooper version entitled Fighting Caravans.

Great wagon train epic. Randolph Scott gets great support from many fine actors including sidekicks Raymond Hatton and Olin Howland. Fantastic theme song that will stick in your mind for days. A woman hating scout (Scott) and his two sidekicks lead a wagon train of easterners into Indian country. Major action scenes, pictures of the majestic wagons, romance, and Monte Blue as a half-breed villain you'll not soon forget. This is one you'll watch again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Wagon Wheels - A Great Western from 1934.......1999-12-29

A well made film from 1934, this movie has everything a good western should have: a good guy wearing the white hat and a bad guy wearing the black, chivalry, campfire songs, humor, and a great cowboys v. indians shootout. This movie was ahead of it's time in 1934, and a pioneer to great westerns and action films that followed. This is a classic that was influential and should not be forgotten.

    Description

Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau and Lon Chaney star in this "exciting account" (Leonard Maltin) about a man who made his name fighting Indians but now must use his peacekeeping skills to keep wronged Sioux warriors from massacring a wagon train and a nearby fort! After the Civil War, Johnny Hawks (Douglas), the Indian Fighter, returns to the West and establishes a treaty with the Sioux Indians. But when two renegade frontiersmen (Matthau and Chaney) seeking a legendary Indian gold mine murder the brother of the Sioux chief, tensions escalate, endangering every man in the territory!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Kirk Douglas Western.......2006-12-19

The Indian Fighter was blessed to have two great things going for it when it was made - one was Kirk Douglas, who was a standout in a number of Westerns, including Gunfight at The OK Corral, Last Train to Gun Hill, Along The Great Divide, Man Without A Star, and a number of others. The second was director Andre de Toth, who directed some great Westerns, including Ramrod, Springfield Rifle, and Riding Shotgun.

Together, they tell the entertaining story of Johnny Hawks, "The Indian Fighter," a legendary soldier who nows scouts for a living. As he tries to guide a wagon train to Oregon through Indian territory, Hawks gets in the middle of warring Indians and a defenseless fort. The Indians are upset because white men are trying to steal gold from their land, and the fort's commander is ready to fight, even if it means the death of everyone in the fort. Add Hawks' budding romance with the Indian chief's daughter, and you have lots of excitement.

This is a film that should get more attention than it does, and I hope that the DVD release will open it up to a much wider audience. The Indian Fighter is a very enjoyable Western.

3 out of 5 stars A simple-minded Western with touches of philosophy and not much drive..........2006-11-08

Filmed in Oregon, Andre De Toth's film is a frontier adventure tale of the Great Sioux Nation whose heritage and culture run through the silver screen like a strong steady stream...

The motion picture touches up new ground by giving Indians a little sex appeal... Douglas, as a vigorous frontier scout, tries to attract the Indian maiden Onahti, played by the attractive brunette Elsa Martinelli... The Italian actress is seen bathing in the fresh waters of a river and later captured nude in a transparent voluminous stream...

"The Indian Fighter" concerns the efforts of a wagon train heading for Oregon in 1870... The train stops at a small frontier fort when the Sioux forbid them to pass through their territory... A seasoned scout and Indian expert, Johnny Hawks (Douglas), is assigned by the army to aid them...

Hawks rapidly goes to the camp of the dignified Chief Red Cloud (Eduard Franz) who explains that the trouble was started by white whiskey traders, trying to rob the Indians of their gold...

Hawks promises to settle th situation and the Chief agrees to appear at the fort to sign a peace treaty... However, his aggressive brother Grey Wolf (Harry Landers) repudiates peace talk because he despises all white men as dishonorable...

Douglas' portrait of Hawks is suitably vigorous and possibly comes close to depicting the actual character of such a man - Hawks is a jealous self-confident man who considers the West as his milieu... He declines to open up the West for civilization... He considers the West as 'a beautiful woman' and refuses to share her with anybody... He is a brave warrior who fights Sioux-style, and a shooter who never miss a snake... He respects the Indians as vanquished valiant enemies who deserve to be treated as human beings...

    1 out of 5 stars Indian Fighter.......2004-02-24

I was very disappointed with this movie.
I saw the original television broadcast airing of this movie in 1962. Over those 40 years, I still remember scenes from the movie, which were not part of this copy. For example, there was a statement at the beginning of the movie, much like the discalimers of today, which indicated that the Indian would not be speaking in their native tongue so the audience would be able to understand the movie better. In addition, I remember that in the end, a soldier (the bugler), silhouetted by the dusk light was standing on a hill embracing a girl as they kissed.
The story line was weak, nearly uninteresting. I felt fidgety watching this poor film. The only thing, which kept me watching, besides the fact that I just threw away good money on this new release, was the fact that I had fond childhood memories of the Indian Fighter. But, in all honesty, I have pulled better movies out of Wal-mart's $5.88 bins.
The movie DID appear to be choppy in its story line, as though it might have been pieced together, as if the original film had some damaged parts which were left out. Also, the movie ended abruptly, leaving me feeling cheated. There were several scenes, which looked grainy, as though they might have been 3rd generation copies.
I want a refund! If I had sent this in a theater, I would have walked out and demanded back my ticket price.

4 out of 5 stars THE INDIAN FIGHTER.......2003-06-24

Have no idea what the guy who complained about the picture being fuzzy, shifting quality and looking chopped up was drinking the night he viewed this movie. Picture quality was excellent and saw no sign of it being chopped up. An excellent western.

    1 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2003-05-31

Either the original or transfer was terribly faulty but picture was poor. Aspect changed from moment to moment. Focus was a bit bleary and night shots were too dark to tell what was going on. And the story, it almost seemed like there were scenes deleted as story line had a very jerky feel to it. As a collector of western films, can only say this ranks among the worst I have purchased.
