One of the few spin-offs that actually equals the original in terms of quality, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has another stellar season in its third year. Detectives Olivia Benson (Emmy winner Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) continue to investigate sexually-based crimes with compassion and vigor. There are a slew of guest stars playing roles we're not accustomed to. Former Saved By the Bell child actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar makes a heartbreaking appearance as a newlywed who gets involved in the gay porn industry to support his baby and indifferent wife. John Ritter guest-stars as a doctor who may have been involved in his pregnant wife's death. And Diane Neal--who joins the cast in the show's fifth season as attorney Casey Novak--plays a cocky businesswoman whose friend is found dead after a wild girls' night out. With a supporting cast that includes detectives Tutuola (Ice-T) and Munch (Richard Belzer), as well as Captain Cragen (Dann Florek), and psychiatrist George Huang (B.D. Wong), SVU tackles cases so heinous that viewers are never certain whether the detectives will be able to make it to the next case. Good storytelling aside, the biggest draw to the show are the characters of Benson and Stabler, whose chemistry is based on fierce loyalty and trust. That they haven't slept with each other is a testament to the skilled writing on the series. The show is so good that a romance between the two doesn't have to be forced on the viewers to keep us interested. From the first episode (involving a therapist who may have encouraged her patient to commit a crime) to the last (where the detectives uncover a sex scandal in the Catholic church), the stories stick with the viewer long after the episodes have been watched. The third season ran from 2001 to 2002 on NBC, but time hasn't tempered the impact of this powerful series. --Jae-Ha Kim
Customer Reviews:
L&O SVU 3.......2007-05-14
THIS IS MY FAVORITE OF THE L&O GROUP. GREAT ACTING WITH STORIES THAT ARE MEANINGFUL AND COMMPASSIONATE. I PLAN TO OWN EVERY SEASON AS THEY COME OUT.
Some improvements for Season 3.......2007-04-07
I love this show. My review is not about the show, however. It is about the DVD itself.
1. The box art is identical to season 2 with Benson & Stabler reversed. Was it that hard to find other pictures of the cast?
2. FINALLY, no more double sided discs! Thank God! This set is 5 single sided discs packaged in 3 slim-cases. A huge improvement.
3. Still no widescreen aspect ratio and 2.0 sound. That's disappointing. If this was in 5.1 surround sound and anamorphic widescreen, the set would be much better. Those with Widescreen HDTV's and Home Theatres know what I'm talking about.
All in all, however, the show itself is great, so it's worth picking up if you're and L&O fan. I just wish Universal would make a more quality DVD package. Look at CSI, Lost, The Office, etc. DVD seasons. They are much better!

Law&Order Special Victims Unit 3rd Season.......2007-03-18
Ilove the Law & Order series on TV and the SVU the 3rd Season is the best buy. To pop in and watch the entire 3rd season on a rainy or snowy day was the best. I recommend it highly and would give it top rately. LL from RI

Description
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the hard-hitting and emotionally charged second series from the critically acclaimed Law & Order franchise, chronicles the compelling cases of the elite Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department. Created by Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf, this award-winning series follows the investigations of Det. Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), a seasoned, seen-it-all veteran of the unit, and his tough but compassionate partner, Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), as they try to solve the city's most heinous crimes. Directing their intense efforts is Capt. Donald Cragen (Dann Florek, reprising his Law & Order role), whose tough but supportive approach guides the entire squad - which includes Detectives John Munch (Richard Belzer) and Odafin Tutuola (Ice-T), forensic psychiatrist George Huang (B.D. Wong) and ADA Casey Novak (Diane Neal) - through the dangerous challenges they face every day.

riveting.......2007-03-09
I have found that all the law and order series are brilliantly conceived shows that have established themselves as mainstays of television viewing. I am collecting all the dvd's that have been released so far, but am frustrated that they allow so long to elapse between releases.
We watch at least 3-4 episodes of the different series daily, and need more so that we can keep up. Foxtel caters to our addiction well, but never well enough.
Love the Law and Order Marathons but now on DVD!.......2007-01-21
So what if you see them over and over! When you love Law and Order doesn't matter. I have a friend who too loves Law and Order. When she and I work and can't sit and watch TV I bought her this set so she can just sit down and watch when she misses out. SVU and CI are my favs. Got really upset when Elliot and Olivia split as partners for awhile. And favorite on CI is Bobby and Eames! Who ever picked these casts did an incredible job. Bobby reminds me an updated version of Coloumbo. Some of the one liners and issues brought up are priceless!
My favorite show.......2007-01-07
Law and Order SVU is by far the best of the law and order series'.
Where are 3 and 4???.......2006-10-02
I love this series, but I refuse to buy season 5 until 3 and 4 come out. Call me crazy, but why would I not want to watch the episodes in order? I've been waiting for years for them to fill in the gap between 2 and 5. What are they doing?!
Great!.......2006-08-14
Haven't had time to see all of the episodes, but I just love the ones I have seen. Thanks! Jan

I received my item within a week of ordering. It was still wrapped in the protective cellophane and it was in great condition with everything intact and accounted for.
Law & Order - Special Victims Unit 2.......2007-02-24
Came fast and was in good condition.
Great Show!.......2007-02-07
This series begins where the first left off. While I wasn't thrilled with the way they ended the first season, I went into the second season expecting what would happen. The shows continue with the same intensity and - at times - heart-breaking stories. I admire the producers for having the courage to take on such difficult subject manner, and I have to admit that I believe it's the best show on television. The actors handle their rolls with great skills - it's almost as though they are real officers. Well done!
Good Choice.......2007-01-19
If, of course, you enjoy the Law & Order SVU series, Amazon is a great place to pick it up. It was at least $10 cheaper than even Wal-Mart, which, with shipping, is STILL cheaper. I enjoy the series myself, though it was a gift for my younger sister.

Originally called Sex Crimes, executive producer Dick Wolf wisely opted for something less lurid when the second in the inexhaustible Law & Order franchise hit the air in 1999. Still, as the opening voiceover makes clear, the "sexually based offenses" investigated by New York's Special Victims Unit can be "especially heinous." This six-DVD boxed set includes all 22 episodes of the first compelling season.
Wolf penned series premier "Payback," which sets the scene, but not the tone. It's a lively, if uneasy mix between horror (rape) and comedy (risqué banter). As the show progressed, humor would be written out altogether (leaving Richard Belzer's Homicide-derived John Munch with increasingly less to do). Less emphasis would also be placed on the home lives of this "elite squad of dedicated detectives." Mostly, "Payback" introduces us to the unit, centering around partners Olivia Benton (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). For two people with so little in common, they make a terrific team--arguably one of TV's best. Stabler is married with four children; Benton is single and her closest relationship is with her mother (Elizabeth Ashley). While Stabler can get a little rough with suspects, Benton tends to over-empathize with the victims. They report to the no-nonsense Captain Cragen (Law & Order vet Dann Florek). Like the parent program's Lenny Briscoe, he's a recovering alcoholic. Dean Winters and Michelle Hurd round out the rock-solid cast.
As it would continue to do in successive years, SVU's first season proved that network TV could explore sex crimes without being salacious or exploitative. "Uncivilized," for instance, concerns a child murder that is automatically pinned on a local sex offender, when the actual perpetrator isn't quite so obvious. "Disrobed," in which Brian Cassidy (Winters) leaves the department and Benson (with whom he had a brief affair) shoots a suspect is another standout in a strong year. SVU was followed by Criminal Intent in 2001 and features several guest appearances from Jerry Orbach (Briscoe) and Angie Harmon (Abbie Carmichael) from the original Law & Order. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Reviews:
Best of all the L&O.......2007-03-15
I love this show. I can't wait for the rest of the seasons to come out. Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have great chemistry. I would watch this show off and on, but when I got the first season on DVD I couldn't stop watching and then I got the second, third and fifth. I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning one night to finish it. What happend to Season 4? Why did they put out season 5 before 4? Anyway, this is such a great show. It gets more and more interesting.

Wonderful opening!.......2007-02-07
I just love this show. The actors as very skilled and take on their rolls almost as though they are real detectives. Their charisma fits the subject manner, and their behavior is not as stereotypical as one might think for an evening show. The end of the first season leaves you hanging, so I was very happy that I had season two already. I would have been disappointed if I had watched it on television and had to wait! All in all, great acting, great content, great show!

Law and Order CI.......2007-05-12
A must own for Law and Order CI or Vincent Dinofrio fans.
Law and Order Criminal Intent at its very best!.......2007-04-18
On of the best Criminal Intent's to be released on dvd, but I will say I am kind of byas to all the Goren episodes . This season he really shows his personality more and the cast seems to flow togther greatly. I wish Criminal Intent would have stayed with this cast instead of adding new dectives, new bosses ect . This is truely the way this show should have remained .
Words can't describe............2007-02-11
....but they'll have to. Great characters, great stories & Nicole Wallace! I am a huge fan of crime/cop drama (Columbo, Wire in the Blood, Cracker, The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Street) and I place CI up there with the best of them. The current season (6) is not representative of seasons 1-4. The episodes airing now seem to be taking a back seat the format we have all come to know and LOVE! Cheeseball openings laced w/ pop songs and an overdose of slow motion. Stories that would normally be cut & dry (also entertaining) are watered down with melodrama. I'll stick with it to the end, but I'm not happy where its going.
Don't get me wrong its nice to have Chris Noth back, but not like this!
Coming into their own.......2007-02-08
I think season two really established Law & Order Criminal Intent as a top notch show who is here to stay. They have excellent guess stars and you really start to learn more about the stars and each one is equally important to the show to include the lawyer. I just love it!! keep them coming!!
Law & Order: Criminal Intent, season #2: An excellent series.......2007-02-06
I now have all three DVD series. I get anxious to watch each episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, no matter which season it is, and no matter what episode it is as well.
Both Goren and Eames work well together. I feel that Vincent D'Onofrio is the best character actor (his words, by the way) that any series can have.
I look forward to the other seasons being released, whenever that might be.

Outstanding show.......2007-05-12
This is my favourite Law&Order show.
Like a lot D'onofrio performance as Bobby Goren, a modern Holmes.
Worth the money.
If you are a fan of Dective Goren then why don't you own this?.......2007-04-18
I love this show but really enjoy it better when the cast is not disturbed as it was done when dect.Eames had her baby so Goren had a diffrent partner for a few episodes and she just didn't flow well with him and even though the story lines and growing knowledge of what makes Goren tick continue to keep you watching, when ever they interact you have this nagging thought like when is she going to get a clue or something . She holds back what normally is a wonderful partnership but thankfully Eames comes back before the show is a lose for the season. I still rated this a 5 because I love Goren's personality and have not found another actor on T.V. that is so interesting and continuies to keep me interested without becoming campy or predictable.
Law and Order CI the third year.......2007-03-10
AS always an added plus to the collection.
Up to standard... Just........2007-03-09
This was not my favourite series of Law and order, possibly due to the fact Eames was out of action for some of the episodes and I never really took to the temporary partner. Most of the episodes were as good as usual but some of them lacked the creative thinking outside the box elements that keep me interested.
Well worth a watch if you're a fan but not a very good start for new watchers!
Fabulous......absolutely riveting.......2007-03-09
I have found that all the law and order series are brilliantly conceived shows that have established themselves as mainstays of television viewing. I am collecting all the dvd's that have been released so far, but am frustrated that they allow so long to elapse between releases.
We watch at least 3-4 episodes of the different series daily, and need more so that we can keep up. Foxtel caters to our addiction well, but never well enough.

Law & Order - The Fourth Year.......2007-02-12
This series is a "Classic". You can watch over and over again. Acting is superb. Writing is definitely a rip from recent headlines. I must own the entire series.
A great cast combines with great stories to create a golden year of L&O.......2006-12-17
The fourth year of Law & Order saw the replacement of ADA Paul Robinette and Lieutenant Don Kregan with Jill Hennessy as ADA Claire Kincaid and S. Epatha Merkerson as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren. Both did an excellent job in their respective roles, and the replacements seem to have been done on the virtue of merit and making a good fit with the rest of the cast versus some of the "eye candy" casting decisions that have been made on Law & Order in recent years. The absolute worst of these was the casting of Milena Govich as Detective Nina Cassady to replace Dennis Farina in season 17, a slot that has been reserved for the "old cop" half of the old cop/young cop dynamic since the show's beginning in 1990. Don't get me started. At any rate, the chemistry between all of the cast in the fourth year clicked wonderfully, making this one of the golden years of Law & Order. Not only that, it seems the writing made a real uptick in quality.
"Profile" was one of the best episodes ever, and really gave Michael Moriarty a chance to shine as Ben Stone. After a number of neighborhood residents are murdered, the police follow the investigation to a local man who is murdering people he doesn't feel belong in his neighborhood. James Earl Jones guest stars as a black defense attorney defending a white supremacist. Most notable is the performance of a victim shot by the defendant, who gives a spot-on example of how to testify on the stand: "I remember the voice of the first white man to tell me he didn't serve my kind. I remember the voice of the doctor who told me I had a healthy baby boy. And I sure as hell remember the voice of the man who took a shotgun and shot me in the back" - this is his reply when he is asked if he can be sure that the defendant's voice is that of his assailant. The episode also wraps up very poignantly, ending on a note that serendipitously echoes the sentiment that led to the series of murders.
A very strange and ironic case was "Big Bang" in which a woman is killed when she opens a package sent to her in the mail. The bomb ordinarily may not have been big enough to kill her, but it launched her letter opener into her neck. Logan and Briscoe initially focus their investigation on her ex-husband, a highly regarded nuclear physicist, who seems to have a large motive for wanting her dead: she was purposely making their divorce as difficult and expensive as possible. It turns out that the actual murderer was after the nuclear physicist himself. He was angry at the physicist for taking credit for his work, and not knowing about the divorce, assumed this was still the physicist's place of residence. It was just an unintended benefit for the physicist that his legal and alimony troubles were put to rest by his rival. This episode was directed by Dann Florek, who played Captain Kragen during the first three seasons.
"Mayhem" departed from the traditional formula on Law & Order - one crime from start to finish, with the first half being dedicated to police work and the last half the courtroom. Instead, this is a fast-paced and unusually structured episode in which Briscoe and Logan attempt to solve five consecutive murders which take place all over the city. The saddest of these murders, to me, was murder #5. Scotty, a man resembling Roger Ebert, is picked up and held as a suspect in a murder when he refuses to be clear about where he was that evening. It turns out the man is hiding his true sexual orientation and doesn't want to admit he was visiting a male friend. When this becomes clear to the police, Logan and Briscoe go to the jail to get him released. They are too late - Scotty was stabbed by a fellow inmate wielding a sharpened toothbrush. He's dead, and the fifth and final murder of the evening.
The final episode of the season, "Old Friends", is Michael Moriarty's last episode as Ben Stone. In it, a truck hits a pedestrian and the investigation reveals the victim's link to a baby-food company in which a new partner has connections to the Russian mob. The victim's original business partner in the baby food company has seen something that definitively connects the hitman to the mobster who is on trial. When she learns the Russian mob is involved, though, she is reluctant to testify. She changes her story at trial, and says she never saw the hitman before. Stone is furious, and threatens her with felony perjury. Eventually, she accepts Stone's promise that he'll get her into witness protection. She testifies, and the mobster is found guilty of orchestrating the murder. Shortly thereafter, the witness is shot dead. Stone blames himself, since he pressured her so much into testifying. Stone tells Schiff he's resigning. They share a moment. Stone's last words to Schiff are "I'm clear as a bell." He affectionately puts his hand up around Schiff's ear and then exits. The episode's title refers both to the Russian mob's interconnections, and, of course, to Schiff and Stone.
I think besides the chemistry of the cast and the good plots, what I liked most about this particular season is that it seemed less "ripped from the headlines" than usual. There were an inordinant amount of truly original stories with odd twists and very good opportunities for the cast to shine.
Freezing.......2006-11-05
This one of a few Law and Order dvd's that I bought, In sent one back because It wouldn't play at all but two others freezes that I bought. Other than that I do enjoy watching the dvd's some of them are doing just fine.
Law & Order At Its Finest.......2006-07-02
One of the best seasons for Law & Order fans. The cast was
at its best with Noth, Orbach, Hennessy, etc. Great story lines
and drama. A definite addition to the DVD collection for
Law & Order fans!
Law & Order, one the best franchise series of all time!!!.......2006-04-01
Dick Wolf is the MAN!!!
Not only that but the cast is superb..what an ensemble!!!
I've grown to love these characters over the years as has my family.
My husband loves to watch the courtroom scenes, esp. those with Jack McCoy and loves it when the true criminal is caught in one of McCoy's "GOTCHA!"'s.
We were most saddened by the passing of Uncle Jerry Orbach *not a real uncle...just wished I had one like him*
with these DVDs...we get to keep him always!!
Thank you TPTB for giving us these treasures to keep!!!

Law & Order's third year marked a transitional one for the top-rated drama. In 1992, Jerry Orbach (Prince of the City) joined the cast. His Det. Lenny Briscoe would turn out to be one of its most enduring characters. After Sgt. Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) is shot by a gun dealer in episode eight ("Prince of Darkness"), Briscoe teams up with Det. Mike Logan (Chris Noth) in the next ("Point of View"). It wasn't meant to be a permanent change (Ceretta was injured, not killed), but the two would continue to beat the streets until Logan's departure in 1995 (Orbach, meanwhile, would remain part of the Law & Order universe until his passing in 2004).
The line-up was otherwise the same: Capt. Donald Craven (Dann Florek), ADA Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks), ADA Benjamin Stone (Michael Moriarty), and DA Adam Schiff (Steven Hill). In the following season, however, Craven will be replaced by Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson), the show's first regular female character (not counting Carolyn McCormick, who was billed as a featured player). The third season would also be Robinette's last; he will be replaced by Claire Kinkaid (Jill Hennessy) in the fourth. Meanwhile, Florek would go on to join Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999 (while Noth would join Law & Order: Criminal Intent in 2005).
During Law & Order's third season, a number of soon-to-be-famous TV actors would put in appearances. They include Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under), Claire Danes (My So-Called Life), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Edie Falco and Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Adam Arkin (Chicago Hope), Michael Badalucco and Camryn Manheim (The Practice), Ron Rifkin (Alias), and Julianna Margulies (E.R.). The Emmy for Best Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, however, was reserved for Broadway dynamo Elaine Stritch in "Point of View." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

If you are a law and order fan you have to have this one for your collection. I thought I ahd seen all of them but there were a few that I hadn't sen. Also the extra stuff on the set is great. The intreviews give you a up close and personal look at the different characters.
dEFECTIVE DISKS.......2007-01-19
VERY FRUSTRATING TO BE WATCHING AN EPISODE AND HAVE THE DISK GET STUCK OR HUNG UP AND HAVE TO PLAY AROUND WITH TRYING TO GET IT TO GO FORWARD AND THEN FIGURE IT ISN'T GOING TO WORK!
Law and Order - The Third Year (1992-1993 Season).......2007-01-04
The discs that did work were amazing! However, the episodes are played on the front and back of the discs and approximately 3 sides of DVDs were duds. Mass production has its downfalls!
Last of the "Boys Club" years, the first of the Lenny Briscoe years.......2006-12-17
The third season of Law and Order is the final season of what has been called "The Boys Club" version of the show in which all six leading characters are men. Of course, the highlight of the season is when Jerry Orbach takes on the role of Detective Lenny Briscoe after Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) is badly wounded in episode eight. The real reason for Sorvino's departure was that he believed the exposure to the cold New York City winters while shooting on location was damaging his singing voice, and so he chose to be written out of the script. Orbach would come to define the role of older cop during his twelve year tenure, and when he left in 2004 he was irreplaceable. In my opinion, his departure marked a downward spiral for the show from which it has not been able to recover. Who could replace Briscoe who, despite his tragic past of alcoholism, failed marriages, and estranged daughters, met life with a sense of humor as signified in his trademark one-liners and wisecracks?
Among the stand-out episodes is "Helpless" in which Elizabeth Olivet takes a rare lead in the story. When she suspects a gynecologist of rape, she poses as a patient to investigate but winds up being attacked instead. She presses charges, but it makes matters difficult for Stone when he learns she tape-recorded the crime. In the end, Stone allows the doctor's giant ego and inability to stay away from the TV cameras declaring his innocence to hang him. The news broadcast of the doctor's arrogant press conference causes dozens of women who have been victimized by the doctor to call the D.A. and come forward with their own accusations. There is a continuation of this story in "Point of View" in which a woman is on trial for killing a man she claims raped her. Olivet interviews the woman and believes her, so she is called by the defense to testify on her behalf. Stone, therefore, must bring up Olivet's recent rape when he cross-examines her in order to discredit her testimony, insinuating that as a rape victim she would tend to believe and sympathize with any woman who claimed she had been raped herself. In the end, it turns out the woman was just carrying out a paid hit - there was no rape. Thus, Stone and Olivet ultimately make peace, when Olivet tells Stone "Sometimes you have an awful way of being right."
"Point of View" is also the episode that marks the first appearance of Lenny Briscoe. It's rough going between Logan and Briscoe at first. Briscoe comments on Logan's jinx: his previous two partners (Greevey and Cerreta) were shot. Down at the precinct, Logan gets mad at Briscoe for using Cerreta's desk. Meanwhile, Briscoe casually throws around a few ethnic slurs and says that Irish people often kill for money (Logan is Irish). Logan asks Cragen when Cerreta is going to return, but of course, that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
One of the first Law and Order episodes involving computer crime is "Virus" in which two patients die and several become critically ill after being administered incorrect dosages of insulin at a clinic that specializes in diabetes. A discussion with a technician leads to evidence that a computer virus has infected the hospital's computer network, and the virus was uploaded via a person dialing in to to the network. A suspect and a motive are uncovered for the crime: the suspect's paranoid dad thinks he was blinded by the clinic, so they figure his son wanted revenge. Stone takes this to the judge, but no dice. So Stone decides to go after the father for conspiracy, hoping he can prove the father had knowledge of his son's intentions, and that, as Schiff says, the son will "get a case of the guilts" and confess, which he does. This might be the earliest incident of technophobia in Law & Order history, and it is an annoying recurrent theme during the first five years of the show. Not until a more techno-savvy Curtis joins the force in 1995 does Law and Order ever talk about any of the good things that computers can do. Castwise, the episode is notable because Leslie Hendrix makes an early appearance as the medical examiner Rodgers.
One thing that was troublesome was the unexplained departure of ADA Robinette and Captain Cregan at the end of this season. All the other members of the cast got at least some explanation of their exits, however abbreviated.
CAUTION: One or more of the discs in your set maybe defective!.......2006-10-27
"Law and Order - The Third Year" is excellent (5 STARS). If you're considering ordering this item, you already know this.
I ordered this three disc set and had to return it to Amazon because the Side 2 of Disc 3 was blank. Four episodes are supposed to be on that side.
***I encountered problems also with "Law and Order - The Second Year". This time, Side 2 of Disc 1 was blank. Amazon immediately issued me a replacement sent by UPS Next Day Air. This time, Side 2 of Disc 1 was fine. However, one of the episodes on Disc 3 (I don't remember which side) stopped and skipped during play. I had had it at that point. I returned both "The Second Year" and "The Third Year" and asked for a refund. It was a shame because I wanted to own both of these sets. However, I'll wait until Amazon investigates the problem and informs me that it has been corrected. I have been a loyal customer of Amazon for years. I will continue to be a loyal customer of theirs. I LOVE THIS BUSINESS! My advisory just pertains to the items mentioned here. BUYERS BEWARE***
"Law and Order - The Fourteenth Year" I received in perfect condition.

Customer Reviews:
A LITTLE MORE DISORDER.......2007-02-10
The second year of this marvelous series unfortunately is not as good as many of the others; the cast changes apparently come through in the production and acting, as evidenced by the interviews in the special features section.
However, the series continued to tackle sensitive and controversial subjects, and its cast is still a great ensemble. The episodes this season seemed a little less suspenseful and talky. The replacement of George Dzundza with Paul Sorvino also seemed to hurt. While Sorvino is a superb actor, he never really seemed to fit in with the rest of them, and Steven Hill's Schiff was a little more annoying in this season. But suffice to say, LAW AND ORDER changed the face of television in the early nineties and this season is still worth a look.
A slight change in formula - but still essential viewing .......2006-03-25
Season 2 of Law and Order saw the first departure of one of the main characters. The series was originally set to film in Los Angeles, but when creator Dick Wolf won his fight to shoot it in New York, actor George Dzundza did not want to relocate his family there, and this led to Dzundza leaving the show. Thus Dzunda's character, Max Greevey, is murdered at the beginning of the first episode of the season, "Confession", an episode that deals much more with the main characters' personal lives than is typical. For example, this is the only episode in which we actually see Greevey's wife. It also deals with the effect that the murder has on Greevey's partner, Mike Logan. This episode is the first appearance of Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, a clinical psychiatrist who performs consultation work for the 27th Police Precinct and District Attorney's office in Manhattan. In this case, she is working as a grief counselor and helping Logan deal with his partner's death. Her's is a recurring role that makes guest appearances until 1997. This episode is also the first appearance of Logan's new partner, Phil Cerrata, played by veteran actor Paul Sorvino.
Because of sponsors pulling support due to the controversial subjects tackled in the first season, the network suits got involved and demanded that the show be toned down. Thus the heated discussions on topical subjects that so commonly occurred between the various cast members during the first year's episodes and made for great dialogue were largely eliminated. Instead, the "ripped from the headline" format became much more commonly used. Often, starting in this season, you'll see a particular episode that is clearly borrowed from a prominent murder case. However, the outcome of the case is often different than what actually occurred in the case from which the script was borrowed. To quote the show's creator Dick Wolf - "We take the headline, not the body copy, because the first half of the show is supposed to be a murder mystery and the second half is usually a moral mystery...it's not supposed to be the actual case".
Among the more interesting guest appearances is Jerry Orbach as a defense attorney in "The Wages of Love". Jerry Orbach goes on to play wise-cracking detective Lenny Briscoe from the middle of season three until the end of season 14. "Aria" is the first appearance of Tovah Feldshuh as high-powered defense attorney Danielle Melnick. Melnick is a recurring character throughout the series, doggedly devoted to defending her clients to the point that 11 years later she is willing to go to jail for her principles and is shot by friends of the client she is trying to defend.
The stand-out episodes include "Vengeance", in which an ex-con who is doing the medical billing for a gynecologist uses his access to patients' personal data to pick out his next murder/rape victim. D.A. Ben Stone not only has to fight the ex-con's wife who is giving him an alibi, believing that her husband is being accused because of his past, he has to fight the murdered girl's parents who are trying to have the accused extradited to Connecticut, based on a stretch of the law, because at the time Connecticut had the death penalty and New York did not. In an episode that is prototypical of D.A. Ben Stone's desire to make new law, "Sisters of Mercy" is the case of a troubled young woman who has an affair with the director of the home for recovering addicts in which she is living because the director says that if she doesn't she will be put out on the street. Stone and Robinette go for first degree rape, a charge that requires them to prove a direct threat of physical violence. Stone argues that since expulsion would have forced the girl back onto the street where she probably would have been killed, the threat to expel constituted a threat of violence. Although everyone, including his boss Adam Schiff, tells Stone that the judge will set aside the verdict because he won't share Ben's enthusiasm for making new law, Stone proceeds and wins.
The season finale, "Working Stiff", is one of those rare episodes in which D.A. Adam Schiff gets more than a few lines, and we really get some insight into his character. A powerful businessman is found murdered, and at first it looks like the murderer is an elderly cancer-striken union member whose pension and health insurance were gutted by the businessman's corporate dealings. The union member, played by Eli Wallach, does not deny the allegations and wants to represent himself at trial just so he can make public all the things the victim did to the other union members. When the case against him falls apart, further investigation reveals that the businessman was about to be indicted by the Justice Department, and that this knowledge was leaked to powerful people who stood to be damaged by it, among them Dwight Corcoran, a former governor of New York. Schiff and Corcoran are old friends, but this does not stop Schiff from making the final necessary connection between his old friend and the murder. Hill's portrayal of Schiff is subtle yet brilliant in this episode. There is also a parallel drawn between the union member and Corcoran - they are both destined to meet a slow and lonely death albeit on the opposite sides of justice. If this episode had been made in 2002 instead of 1992, you would swear that it was "ripped from the headlines" of the Enron scandal.
This second year of Law and Order just goes to show that the early years of the show hold up over time and are still essential viewing. Highly recommended.
Law & Order - The Second Year.......2006-02-19
I ordered this product knowing I wouldn't be disappointed. Law and Order is one of the best programs of this past decade. Keep bringing all the Seasons - I want a complete library one day!
The best seasons were the early ones.......2005-02-17
As season two of Law & Order opens, Detective Mike Logan (Chris Noth) finds himself assigned a new partner in Detective Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) in the wake of the murder of his old partner Greevy (George Dzundza). From that point on, this is when the revolving door began to turn for the ensemble cast of Law & Order, even though the rest of season one's cast returns here. Michael Moriarty's and Richard Brooks' DA team are still the best duo in the history of the show (say whatever you want about longtime vet Sam Waterston, Moriarty will always be superior), and Sorvino and Noth are excellent together. The characters are given more depth, and the stories are more intense; containing that "ripped from the headlines" feel that the show would gain notariety for. The late Jerry Orbach, who would become the face of the series from season three onwards, appears here as a super slick defense attorney, and his guest spot alone is worth giving this a look for alone. All in all, season two of Law & Order only proves further that the early seasons of the series were undoubtadly the best, and now maybe Universal will finally get around to releasing season three on DVD.
The good years.......2004-09-12
Each episode of the early seasons lofts far above the majority of the recent dribble, now mostly sensationalist schlock. But if you take a look at this or season one,(i can't wait for season 3!), you'll know why, or remember why, this show has endured for so long. This is genuine quality TV, and i hope with all my heart that the current trend of, well, crappiness will end soon, very very soon. The show should go back to it's basics, because it's so good at it.
