Dynasty rules!.......2007-07-02
Season 1 of Dynasty was great! Season 2 even better! Electrifying storyline, characters, costumes and set designs. A must for any Dynasty fan! Finally!
Dynasty The 2nd Season .......2007-06-24
At long last this long awaited 2nd season of "Dynasty" is out on DVD!
I agree that Joan Collins debut as superbitch Alexis really give the series a much needed boost.
I did also enjoy the first series thanks to John Forsythe,Linda Evans and particularly Pamela Sue Martin as the one and only orginal Fallon.
In fairness to Emma Samms who took over the role later,Fallon Mark2 spent her two seasons on "The Colbys" in tears but when Fallon returned to "Dynasty" later, the character was like her old strong self.
I also really liked Pamela Bellwood as the tragic Claudia, who lost her husband Matthew and daughter Lindsay, after season one(although Matthew did make a dramatic comeback at the end of season 7)she survived so much, only to die in the "La Mirage" fire at the end of season6.
It was a shame that Al Corley left in season2(due to being unhappy at Steven suddenly getting a glamorous young wife)he was so good in that part,Jack Coleman too over the role, although good too,Al Corley was the better Steven.
The new villian in season 2 was Nick(James Farentino)the Doctor with a grudge against Blake, thankfully Alexis really became the central villian and Nick disappeared after the 2nd season.
I was lucky enough to see the Joan Collins theatre show in England last year, she looked great and was so funny, she doesn't take herself too seriously and appreciates her fans, confirmed to me,when a requested signed picture was duly sent.
So like a lot of fans I agree that Dynasty really gets going when Alexis crosses the courtroom at Blake's trail and takes her hat off, enter Alexis!
Season 2 is finally on the horizon--bring the rest on too!.......2007-06-13
It is great to see Season 2 finally appearing on DVD--this is the season where everything came together, and the characters and plot-lines exploded. Contrary to what a previous review states, Joan Collins, who first appears in episode 1 of this season, wasn't brought in to "save the show": her engagement was to be a brief story arc (the role was originally offered to Sophia Loren, who declined it). The character proved so popular, that Joan was signed on a regular cast member. "Dynasty" would remain strong for the next several seasons before it devolved into lunacy just as it was spining-off "The Colbys" as a separate series; during this time, Pamela Sue Martin left the series and the character of Fallon was later resurrected by Emma Samms, who--try as she may--just couldn't pull it off. While the spin-off got off to a rocky beginning before making marked improvements while paring down its over-large cast, "Dynasty" continued to languish, mired by insipid plotlines (a fake Krystle?); in its second--and final--season, "The Colbys" was regarded by critics as the best-written soap on evening television, but viewers never caught on to the spin-off because of the strong counterprogramming by NBC ("Cheers" was in its prime during that timespan). "The Colbys" was cancelled after a stunning finale (aside from an odd Fallon/UFO encounter that came out of left field); Jeff and Fallon returned to "Dynasty" as it slowly, slowly improved and eventually put on a stellar final season. The final season easily rivalled the early "glory" seasons in terms of plot and character development--during which the tired character of Krystle was written out, Emma Samms finally grew into the role of Fallon, and Sable Colby (Stephanie Beacham) was brought back as a stunningly-crafted nemesis for Alexis. Joan was preparing to leave if "Dynasty" had it been renewed for another season; the producers had Diahann Caroll set to return as Dominique Devereaux to fill Joan's stilettos. Unfortunately, all but the most die-hard fans had given up on "Dynasty" by this time because of it its past years of mediocrity, so even the turnaround in its last year could not save "Dynasty" and it was cancelled. The reunions which followed were disappointing.
Stupid FOX, Smart Paramount?.......2007-06-11
It is well known that Fox Studio did not even know its own product. Season 1 of Dynasty was bad, which is why Joan Collins was introduced in Season 2 to lift the ratings. She did so amazingly. So what did Fox do? After disappointing Season 1 DVD sales they decided to CANCEL future Dynasty releases without doing their research or talking to fans. They have lost alot of money by being stupid and not knowing what their fans want. Perhaps they should have released Season 1 and 2 together from the start in 2005. This is what Paramount, who have taken over the rights, are doing. They are re-releasing Season 1 in a boxset with Season 2. Or, you can just buy the great Season 2 on its own.
While it is very good news to FINALLY see Season 2 coming on DVD, it is bad news to see stupid film companies still taking their time releasing old TV shows on DVD when the format has been around for 10 years now. It's just not good business sense. Consumers want to see quicker releases for seasons. We don't want once a year like the Warner idiots have done with DALLAS. Hello!
I'll be first in line for Season 2 of Dynasty. I would like Paramount to prove me wrong about the film companies by releasing subsequent episodes of Dynasty on DVD as quickly as possible. Us fans deserve as much after the embarrassing three year wait for Seaon 2.
Bring on the catfights with Alexis, Krystle and Sammy Jo.

Patterns exist everywhere: in nature, in science, in religion, in business. Max Cohen (played hauntingly by Sean Gullette) is a mathematician searching for these patterns in everything. Yet, he's not the only one, and everyone from Wall Street investors, looking to break the market, to Hasidic Jews, searching for the 216-digit number that reveals the true name of God, are trying to get their hands on Max. This dark, low-budget film was shot in black and white by director Darren Aronofsky. With eerie music, voice-overs, and overt symbolism enhancing the somber mood, Aronofsky has created a disturbing look at the world. Max is deeply paranoid, holed up in his apartment with his computer Euclid, obsessively studying chaos theory. Blinding headaches and hallucinogenic visions only feed his paranoia as he attempts to remain aloof from the world, venturing out only to meet his mentor, Sol Robeson (Mark Margolis), who for some mysterious reason feels Max should take a break from his research. This movie is complex--occasionally too complex--but the psychological drama and the loose sci-fi elements make this a worthwhile, albeit consuming, watch. Pi won the Director's Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. --Jenny Brown
Customer Reviews:
.....rated by a viewer not a film student or a so-called genius.......2007-07-02
If you are not into movie making or into the exciting world of mathematics don't even bother to watch this movie. Actually i found the making more interesting than the movie. The movie gives you severe headache and most probably that was intended for. I like low budget cult movies but this is not among them. You can feel the "movie making 101" everywhere in this movie. But I can tell its a treat for people who are fond of movies and their skeleton. If you don't care about behind the scene and only interested in a good, eye pleasing and entertaining movie this is not for you. My head still hurts thinking about Pi.
Atypical movies are becoming typical.......2007-06-29
Offbeat moviemaking doesn't have the fascination it used to. Filming in black and white, creative editing, yer standard 'dark and disturbed' character is almost becoming rote. This movie has all that stuff, but you have to give props because of the low budget, and it was still effectively done. The prospect of a 216 digit number being the key to the universe is fascinating and for my money, they could have gone into greater back story about that, and less of the main character's slow meltdown trying to gain knowledge of it. A PBS style documentary would be great! Anyway, this moving was still entertaining, even though the style of it has been repeated enough now that it's not quite as interesting as it might've been.
One thing kept coming up as I watched this movie, which was it seemed to me that those guys who made the Matrix must have been influenced by this movie to a degree. Like they took the concept and went way out with it, but more than that, all of the shots in the subway were VERY reminiscent of Matrix scenes...the shot where the main character is in the white light reminded me of Neo meeting the Matrix creator, ...the whole numbers tie-in, Kabala, etc,etc.....
The worst movie in the history of time........2007-06-15
I'm gonna go out on a limb here... This is pretty much the worst video ever made. People say, "Like anyone can even know that, you didn't give it a chance, you didn't get it." No, no, and no. I would rather watch Uncle Rico throw a football and talk about how he could have won state.
I gave it a chance, and I tried to "get it." The first time I watched it, I thought it was awful, but I thought there might be something more to it. (No, No! There's less.) I became obsessed with trying to find a meaning, then I became obsessed with trying to find a single redeeming quality in the movie. There is none.
Save yourself the 84 mins of your life. Go watch the grass grow. Actually, it's not even as fun as watching the grass grow, it's more like watching a rock be a rock. You can't reason with me... this movie sucks. I'd rather watch the video from "The Ring."
$60,000 Budget=ONE GREAT MOVIE!!.......2007-05-19
I can tell just from this movie having a $60,000 budget and as well as it does selling and viewing, Aronofsky's fans love movies that challenge the brain/mind, and he pulls it off so well in Pi. Some people complain about the black and white filming but it makes it much more interesting. You will not be disappointed with this and i also recommend(if you havent seen Requiem for a Dream) that you just buy the double set.
3.14.......2007-05-14
Very entertaining. However, it can go several ways(as can anything), but the worst is being disgusted with some of the scenes which I can't ruin for you.
Or you can live in fear of others controlling most aspects of your life because it is not as far-fetched as some would think. I didn't live the story so I can't claim anything, but if you use your brain........
But realize that it's been like that for most or all of your life until now.
Wake up. See this movie.

Luscious cinematography and even more luscious stars make Tristan & Isolde a feast for the eyes. Adapted from the medieval love story, the movie begins with with young Tristan (played as a child by Thomas Sangster, Love Actually) as he sees his parents killed by the tyrannical Irish, who ruled over a fractured Britain after the Roman occupation. Taken in by Marke (Rufus Sewell, Dark City), who rules one of the British tribes, Tristan (James Franco, Spider-Man) grows up to be a young prince and a mighty warrior--and when he's believed slain in battle, he's given a royal funeral, which sends him out sea in a burning boat. But the fire goes out and Tristan washes ashore on Ireland, where Isolde (Sophia Myles, Art School Confidential), the daughter of the Irish king, nurses him back to health. Being a lovely pair of young folk bursting with hormones, they fall madly in love... and set in motion a tragic tale that's lasted for centuries in many variations. Some reviewers have criticized Tristan & Isolde for deviating from the most common classical version, but the movie's storyline--though certainly altered to appeal to modern audiences--is fairly strong. Myles and especially Sewell turn in strong performances; Franco, however, though surprisingly persuasive as a warrior, never burns as a lover. Nonetheless, the loving shots of Franco's muscular physique will make this a must-have for his fans. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From executive producer Ridley Scott (Gladiator) comes a sweeping, action-packed saga of epic battles, political intrigue and forbidden passion, set in a time when the lines between heroism and savagery were etched in fire and carved out with broadswords. After the fall of Rome, visionary warlord Marke (Rufus Sewell) seeks to unite the squabbling English tribes to form one strong nationand defeat brutal Irish King Donnchadh. But when Lord Marke?s greatest and most loyal knight, Tristan (James Franco), falls in love with Isolde (Sophia Myles), a beautiful Irish woman, it threatens to destroy the fragile truce and ignite a war. In the spirit of Braveheart and A Knight?s Tale, TRISTAN+ ISOLDE is a rousing tale of trust and treachery that will leave you breathless!
Customer Reviews:
tristan & isolde.......2007-06-29
If you enjoy a good love story, I would highly recommend the haunting & little known story of Tristan & Isolde. There are several versions of this tale, & the movie picks a powerful one in which Isolde takes center stage. Truly, Sophia Myles (as Isolde) commands every scene that she is in. Not that James Franco (as Tristan) doesn't make a strong appearance. He just seems more like the strong, silent type here. His emotional depth is found in what he does more than what he says. Franco can give some powerful looks. His "stalking" of Isolde & King Marc at the market is particularly haunting (almost disturbing really). Both of these young actors portray a passionate love, one that the viewer becomes rapped up in. Add the sympathetic King Marc to the mix, & you've got a love triangle in which you can believe.
The time honored theme of love vs. loyalty to one's country is the conflict that makes this film so interesting. It's not your typical love story; you can't see where this one is going. On another note, I found the scenery beautiful, and the ending is. . . . well, I won't ruin it, but don't miss this film if you are a fan of period pieces or just a good romance.
Good love story, stronger Committment story.......2007-06-23
I really liked the movie, it made me cry. I found the idea that Tristan's honor and committment to Marke was so strong that he was willing to give up his love heart-warming. I don't know if many people these days have that type of loyalty for anything. Loved Marke, Isolde, and Tristan's protrayal, also loved the Handmaiden to Isolde - she really stood out for me as one who is also loyal (and loving).
wonderful love story.......2007-06-19
I had never heard of Tristan and Isolde before watching this movie. After watching this movie, it reminded me somewhat of Romeo and Juliet.
Tristan, a Brit, and Isolde fall in love when Isolde brings him back to health. (At her maid's urging, Isolde doesn't tell Tristan her real name. Instead, she uses her maid's name.) However, Isolde's father, the Irish king, hears about an enemy on land and goes in search for him. Isolde manages to help Tristan escape. The king never knows who it was.
In an attempt to cause divisions among the Brits, Isolde's father has proposed an tournament. The winner of the tournament will get his daughter in marriage. Tristan volunteers to join the tournament to win the daughter for his king.
Of course, Tristan and Isolde realizes they're trapped with their duties when Tristan wins and discovers who the bride is. Despite their duties, they find other ways to express their love. As love progresses, they become bolder. However, these bold displays of love soon catches the attention of others. The other people decide to expose their affair to the king.
Love, forbidden or not, will not be deterred.
What can I say? Wonderful cast. Wonderful and romantic sceneries. Wonderful story. The only thing that I wasn't satisfied was the development of tension/jealousy between Tristan and his fellow comrades. It was sort of sudden. Other than that, simply wonderful.
romanticly sweet.......2007-05-23
this was such a good movie, not exact to the myth of the lovers.... but a really romantic story that was so close
Tristan and Isolde not your typical chick flick.......2007-03-31
Tristan and Isolde came before there was a Romeo and Juliet. And I can see perhaps why they are less talked about. The movie is not the best chick flick but not the worst. There is a lot of war and you have to keep track of the characters.
I feel like there isn't enough character development. I found Melot more admirable than the character of Tristan. Tristan tries to be selfless but ends up becoming selfish as he pursues Isolde regardless of the fact that she is now married to the man who took him in. Both characters choose deception to be together knowing that peace in Ireland depends on the said marriage.
The actions and decisions chosen by the characters cannot be undone and I think that is what leads to their downfall. I rented this in the hopes that watching this may make me shed a few tears but would otherwise be an enjoyable experience. This movie itself is not all that bad just know what you are getting into.

The teaming of James Stewart and Henry Fonda was a natural: not only were the two men veteran stars of their generation, but they'd actually been friends and even roommates since early in their careers. These two Westerns offer the stars in their relaxed end-of-career mode, with Stewart in the hero roles and Fonda as either villain or burr-under-the-saddle sidekick.
Firecreek is a grim 1968 Western that carries a strong residual aroma of High Noon. Stewart plays a farmer who happens to be the nominal (but rarely needed) sheriff of Firecreek, which means he must go into service when Fonda and his scurvy bunch of desperados (among them Gary Lockwood and Jack Elam) come to town looking for trouble. This slow, stripped-down picture has a philosophical undertone, with Fonda's weary, wounded outlaw trading bitter wisdom with local girl Inger Stevens. It goes on too long and Stewart is in the phase of coasting on his familiar persona, but overall it's a decent little Western fable.
The Cheyenne Social Club, from 1970, gets off to a marvelous start, with a sequence of saddle tramps Stewart and Fonda riding across half the West as Fonda maintains a fractured monologue throughout. Screenwriter James Lee Barrett was a veteran who worked frequently with Stewart (Shenandoah) and John Wayne, and some of the Western flavor is fine, but... things turn crass as soon as the pals realize Stewart has inherited a bordello in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Everybody except Fonda overacts mercilessly, and director Gene Kelly--yes, that Gene Kelly--indulges a leering style that undercuts some of the authentic laughs. Shirley Jones is around to provide comfort at the club; some predictable gunplay is mixed in with the jokes. However middling these two films might be in the filmographies of their formidable stars, it must be said that the widescreen transfer of both films to DVD is very good. --Robert Horton
Description
They can be tough as leather. Or as down-home as any pair of good ol' boys. Either way, there's a sense of warm respect between the two stars. The off-camera friendship of James Stewart and Henry Fonda goes back to their days as struggling actors and roommates. The Cheyenne Social Club [Side A] casts them as saddle-weary Texans who, surprised to find they've inherited a Wyoming bawdy house, feel honor-bound to defend it against a gun-wielding gang. Gene Kelly produces and directs this mix of fun and Western action. Next comes a firestorm of character-driven excitement in Firecreek [Side B]. Fonda plays an outlaw preying on small towns, and Stewart is the jittery, $2-a-month part-time lawman who must find the courage to stop him. This will be some showdown!

Good Movies.......2007-05-20
Bought the set because I wanted "The Cheyenne Social Club". Bought it as a gift for my boyfriend. That is one of his favorite movies. He loves the classics. I must say that even though I'm not into the older movies as much as he is, it was refreshing to see a movie about a brothel that wasn't trashy. It was funny in parts as well as enough drama to keep it interesting.

Cheyenne Social Club is a Classic buddy western that puts to of Hollywood's best together and tells a wonderfully funny and edgy for it's time story. I highly recommend this film. Firecreek is not as well known and not as well told of a story. It's a fare film but much appreciated attachment on this DVD. This double feature is worth having in your library.
Stewart and Fonda..What a pair.......2007-02-13
This western double feature disk is worth every penny
The Cheyenne Social Club is a bitter sweet comedy. Stewart inherited a brothel froma deceased brother. Fonda is his saddle buddy who comes alonmg with him. The madam of house is played by Shirley Jones. Stewart finds it hard to manage the ladies. Comedy with western action ensues
FireCreek pits Stewart as farmer/part time Sheriff against gunfighter Fonda with his gang (Gary Lockwood. Jack Elam) who preys upon the small town and its citzens. It has a High Noon-que quality, but seem more sadistic for my taste. It is tend for now, but in the 1970s when this film came out, it was rated M for mature
Both westerns showcase the talents of Fonda and Stewart and these are worth your time

Two Good Pairings.......2007-01-24
This disk contains two westerns, both staring Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda. The pair works well together in very different roles.
The first is a comedy and the second is a drama. In the first they are buddies, in the second they are enemies. In both, they are splendid.
Individual reviews appear below:
THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB
This One's a Hoot
Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda play a couple of cowboys working on the range. When Stewart gets a letter he is surprised to learn that his bother has died and left him his business. It is a placed called the Cheyenne Social Club. So it is that Stewart and his sidekick, Fonda, set out for Wyoming with the expectation of becoming respectable business men.
Upon arrival, Stewart learns that he is the most popular and respected man in town. He also learns that his social club is a brothel. This strikes him as not being "in his line of work" and he determines to close the place down. That takes him from being the most respected to the most reviled man in town. He has some hard decisions to make and even more trouble appears when he learns that there are contractual agreements between his shop and the railroad. Things get more complicated still when he learns that there are some ruffians roughing up some of his girls.
Stewart is just a nice guy trying to do the "right thing". Eventually, he does...much to his own surprise.
FIRECREEK
Sometimes the Little Guys Win
This is another pairing of Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda in a western.
Stewart plays a farmer, respected by his peers and given the honorary title of sheriff in his town. The tile also comes with a home made tin badge and 20 dollars. It is a sign of esteem and nothing more.
Fonda plays the leader of a group of gunmen with vague notions about law and order. When passing through town, they decide to stop there a little while and rest. Nobody really minds that but they do object to being treated like vermin by the gunmen who get a bit wild when they drink. Fonda does not really approve of what they do but is reluctant to come down on them too hard for fear of alienating them. That means that it is up to the sheriff to keep order.
Keeping order is a hard job. He is not trained and he is certainly no gunfighter. He is just a farmer. The townspeople encourage him just to ignore things in the hope that the bad guys will eventually go away. All are frightened. When a friend is lynched, though, Stewart decides that enough is enough and takes on the whole gang.
This is one of those films in which the little guy manages to stand up to the bully, survive and even win. It comes at a cost, though.
Two very different Western pairings for Stewart and Fonda.......2006-11-20
Firecreek probably wouldn't stand a chance in today's market - it's a film dominated by old men with a script that's a very slow burner. Indeed, it's not until the superb last half hour that the film really starts punching its weight. For much of the film, Henry Fonda's gang of hired guns who drift into the one-dog town of Firecreek are more annoyance than genuine threat, but with each incident defused only by a display of anything-for-a-quiet life weakness from the townsfolk and James Stewart's part-time sheriff, violence is inevitable. What is surprising are the character revelations en route: every single character who drifts into this waste basket for lost souls is a wholly inadequate human being in one way or another. Fonda is quietly impressive as a man who can only maintain the authority he needs to stop him from being a nobody by giving in to his gang's wishes to prevent them replacing him. Stewart at first seems too old for the part, but as the film progresses his casting makes more and more sense: as Dean Jagger points out in the film's best scene, this is a town of losers, people who'll settle for what nobody else wants because they know no-one will challenge them for it. Or as Gary Lockwood's young gun puts it, "Ain't nothin' in this town five dollars won't fix." Surprisingly good, and much better directed by Vincent McEveety than you'd expect from a director who spent most of his career commuting between Disney comedies and TV shows.
The DVD has a good 2.35:1 widescreen transfer but the only extra is the original trailer.
Stewart and Fonda's subsequent Western teaming is an altogether more comic affair. The Cheyenne Social Club is a brothel that Stewart's staunchly Republican cowpoke inherits from his wastrel brother, much to his discomfort and the delight of his garrulous sidekick Fonda, who displays a surprising gift for comedy that easily outshines his co-star. It's more cosy than risqué and Gene Kelly's direction is more professional than inspired, but it's a pleasant enough amble even if the jokes are slight and run out somewhere around the one hour mark.
The 2.35:1 transfer is good, but despite sharing the same cinematographer the look of the film is much softer. Extras are the original trailer and a brief vintage behind the scenes short.

Cheyenne Autumn is a beautiful title to grace John Ford's final Western, an earnest attempt at long last to "tell the story from the Indians' point of view." The film has moments of grandeur, thanks especially to William H. Clothier's majestic Technicolor compositions--restored to their proper Panavision dimensions on the DVD release--and moments of graceful action thanks to that peerless horseman, Ben Johnson. In other respects, the film falls short of the occasion. Ford is unambiguously supportive of the Cheyennes' resolve to bolt their assigned reservation in the desert Southwest and trek north to their ancestral lands. By emphatic contrast, most of white society, the military, the bureaucracy, and the sensationalist press are portrayed as insensitive, foolish, or downright hateful. Unfortunately, the Cheyenne are nobly wooden and, apart from some Navajo extras, played by non-Indians: Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Sal Mineo, Victor Jory (who's pretty magnificent, actually), and Dolores Del Rio (who's breathtakingly beautiful as ever). As for point of view, it's sympathetic cavalry officer Richard Widmark and Quaker missionary Carroll Baker through whose eyes most of the epic narrative unfolds. A scabrous Dodge City interlude in midfilm, featuring James Stewart as a thoroughly disreputable Wyatt Earp (as opposed to the noble figure Henry Fonda played in My Darling Clementine), was chopped in half after the New York roadshow opening in 1964; it's all there on the DVD. Add to the list of sympathetic whites U.S. Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz, played by Edward G. Robinson, who replaced an ailing Spencer Tracy. --Richard T. Jameson

uggg! terrible movie!.......2007-05-21
historically inacurate. about only thing correct are the names of the 2 chiefs and also they had horses. not much else is correct. they bolted from the reservation area in Oklahoma, near fort reno, not the desert sw?? also contained unneeded silliness with James Stewart's segment as the marshall of dodge city ks.
Cheyenne Autumn.......2007-05-12
This is a different kind of western. A film that was very brave at the time it was made, as it was a pro indian movie. It has the story of a proud race of people who are native indian who lost their lands to the White man and were double crossed on every peace treaty made .It has the story of white people seeing injustice and betrayal of the indian people and treid to do the right thing for the indians.
Against the backdrop of the magnificent desert scenery and a proud race forced to fight to survive and to get justice.
A truly great epic of a western.
Uneven, disjointed, but worth watching..........2007-02-10
This is John Ford's last Western, and a film in which he tries to make amends for (in some films) his rather shabby treatment of Native Americans. It is not a typical Ford Western, though. Yes, it's filmed in Monumental Valley, and it boasts some of the greatest cinemtography ever in a Ford film. Yet, it seems rambling, even disjointed at times. It is Ford's longest work (clocking in at, for Ford at least, a long 158 minutes), and it feels like it could have used a little editing. There isn't much humour in it, except for the Dodge City episode, which is awkwardly inserted into the middle of the film. It really seems out of place because the rest of the film is very serious with very little comic relief included. But the episode itself is actually one of Ford's funniest scenes EVER. The banter between James Stewart, Burt Kennedy, John Carradine, and Elizabeth Allen is hilarious. The scene was originally cut out of the initial theatrical version, but then later restored for VHS/DVD releases. Ford seems to be trying something new here, but just not getting it right. This film is missing the poetry that is in many of his other Westerns. The film comes across as rather preachy, ponderous, and lumbering (even though the subject matter is definitely important). Tag Gallagher's book on Ford, he states that Ford wanted to cast actual Native Americans in the roles of Montalban, Mineo, and Roland, treating them like a Greek Chorus unable to communicate with the whites. This idea was rejected by the producers of the film. He reportedly didn't care for Alex North's score, either. Ford films always had a more traditional, folk tinged score that was used sparingly throughout his films. North's score underscores almost every scene, here. It is nice, however, to see this film widescreen. Before, it was only available in wretched, pan and scan versions, which absolutely butchered Ford's compositions. Here we get to see the spectacular photography by William Clothier, who shot this film in 70mm. Ford only completed one more feature film after this (the underrated Seven Women), and this ended up being his final Western. It's worth watching, for sure (especially if you're a Ford admirer), but it is not one of his better films.
John Ford's Epic Tribute to the American Indian.......2007-02-09
I always liked this film even though the press reviews and its viewer acceptance were mixed. John Ford uses familiar locations to tell his story. The cast is solid even though Richard Widmark does not have the presence or charisma of John Wayne, Ford's usual leading man. This is a well intentioned film just the same.
To the contrary of critical opinion, I enjoyed the Dodge City sequence with Arthur Kennedy as Doc Holliday and James Stewart as Wyatt Earp. Some say it does not fit the serious and solemn tone of the rest of the film. That is true to some extent, but the juxtaposition of cinematic styles acts to bring attention to the Indian's plight. The outrageous and bawdy nature of the Dodge City sequence shows that the imported eastern notions of a superior and sophisticated transplanted European civilization are not sophisticated at all. They bring chaos rather than harmony to the land on their Westward expansion.
In another scene, Karl Malden's performance as Capt. Oskar Wessels is over the top, yet his foreign accent and the fort he commands stand as a metaphor for the Nazi concentration camps of WWII. Sean McClory as Dr. O'Carberry brings stability and compassion to this awkward scene.
It was good to Patrick Wayne on hand and many of Ford's troupe of actors including Ken Curtis, John Carradine, Danny Borzage, Chuck Hayward, Mae Marsh, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr.
Mike Mazurki's soliloquy to Richard Widmark on the insignificance and effectives of his role as Sr. First Sergeant in the infantry is memorable and touching.
William H. Clothier's cinematography is beautiful leaving one with an impressionistic idea of the Indians' eternal tie to the land.
I read where Ford was not pleases with Alex North's score but perhaps North's score ushered in the deathknell of the American Western as CHEYENNE AUTUMN was certainly one of the last great films of the genre.
Ford Trying to Milk a Dead Cow.......2007-01-19
Ford goes to the well with all his familiar tools (Monument Valley, U.S. Calvary, Indian Wars, etc.) and comes back dry, to put it nicely.
Great cast- Widmark, Mauldin, Stewart, Robinson, etc labor through an abominable script with the intellectual depth of a deodorant commercial.
At its best, it is flat, contrived and silly and at it worst it is unnecessarily stupid- Latinos and Italians with five o'clock shadow playing Native Americans. Give me a break.

No collection of classic TV Westerns is complete without Cheyenne, the trailblazing 1955 series that premiered within weeks of Gunsmoke. The strapping Clint Walker stars as Cheyenne Bodie, the iconic role that earned him his place in the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Cheyenne is a classic Western hero in the drifter tradition, accepting jobs ranging from frontier scout to trail boss. In this first season, he is accompanied at times by sidekick Smitty (L.Q. Jones). "It takes about a minute to know a man," one character remarks during the course of Cheyenne's first season. But we size up Cheyenne in an instant. He is a man of honor, straight shooting and plainspoken. In one episode, he declines an offered position of ranch foreman. "I don't like the job," he states, "and when I don't like a job, I turn it down." When a woman refers to Indians as "savages" in the first episode, Cheyenne enlightens her, "The Indians think we're the savages." Several episodes, including "Quicksand" and "The Last Train West," echo the John Ford masterpiece, Stagecoach, as Cheyenne finds himself amongst a diverse and disparate group of people who are thrown together by circumstance.
Cheyenne was part of a new breed of "adult Western." The episode "Johnny Bravo" (was this the inspiration for Greg's rock star nom de plume on The Brady Bunch?) deals with a rancher who disapproves of his daughter's affair with a Mexican. Keep a sharp lookout for actors who would later become Hollywood's most wanted. A pre-Maverick James Garner appears as different characters in three episodes. Dennis Hopper is hot-triggered gunfighter the Utah Kid, in "Quicksand." And that's the future Miss Hathaway, Nancy Kulp, as a sassy waitress in "Johnny Bravo." Cheyenne was originally broadcast as one of three rotating series under the banner, Warner Brothers Presents, but it quickly established itself as the runaway hit. Like the best Westerns, it is anything but quaint nostalgia. With its timeless setting, compelling stories, charismatic hero, and positive values, the sun will never set on Cheyenne. --Donald Liebenson
Description
Cheyenne follows the adventures of Cheyenne Bodie. Cheyenne was a big man, a former army scout who went west after the American Civil War and drifted from job to job, here a cowboy, there a lawman, and always a larger-than-life hero.
Customer Reviews:
Cheyenne - great DVD collection.......2007-05-15
Bought for my mom, and she is enjoying it a lot.
Best TV Western of All.......2007-03-18
Clint Walker was Cheyenne, and Cheyenne was Clint Walker. No other actor could have brought the humble heroism, class and action to this role. Clint was the gentle giant who young boys of the '50's idolized and young girls dreamed of marrying. Clint's mannerism, acting style, voice and sheer size brought the Cheyenne character to life. This DVD is perfect for those of us old enough to remember the series and to those who we would like to introduce this series to. The best part of the DVD is the recent interview with Clint. Time has indeed taken its toll on this man who once looked looked like a Greek God, but its a joy seeing him for one more time. There are so many more questions that I wished had been asked such as his interest in body building, his excperience in movies, why he felt his career did not take off as James Garner, Steve Mcqueen's etc, and how he spends his time today. Perhaps in future DVDs Clint might agree to sit down for a more extensive interview. In the meantime, may I suggest his terrific website where his fans can avail themselves of some wonderful Cheyenne autographed photos and memorabilia. Happy 80th birthday Clint...and thanks for the memories.
Cheyenne revisited.......2007-03-09
After 45 years it was fantastic to see teh big fellow in action again. A bit cornier than i remembered, but still most enjoyable. i'll be ordering the other seasons.
There's lots to like in this western.......2007-02-16
Classic westerns are appreciated by fans for their principled heroes, compelling stories and characters, and for exploring issues of right and wrong in dramatic situations. With this series, you also have Warner Brother's movie-making savvy brought to the screen as they made their first successful venture in TV with Cheyenne. Seeing these episodes from the first season is like watching 15 shortened theatrical movies. You'll see lots of outdoor camera work, bits of old Warner Brothers stock footage cut in here and there to give scope, and excellent scripts and acting.
Being of a frugal nature, Warner Brothers even recycled several movie scripts from their vault, reworking them as Cheyenne episodes. I didn't know at first, so when I watched a couple of the episodes I thought, "Wait a second, isn't that like such and such a movie?" and then realized, "Yes, it is!" If you're a Humphrey Bogart fan, you'll be interested in seeing two of the Cheyenne remakes. Surprisingly, I found the Cheyenne versions hold their own with the original movies, and there are some things I really like better about the Cheyenne remakes.
Best of all is the casting of Clint Walker as Cheyenne Bodie. He has a poise and easy grace on screen that is remarkable since I understand he didn't have much acting experience at this time. His portrayal of Cheyenne Bodie has just the right blend of integrity, strength of character and subtle humor to make the character memorable. I've watched my favorite episodes quite a few times, and often pick up something new in his expressions, such as when he's sizing up the members of the party he'll be guiding in the Quicksand episode (and that look at the end of Quicksand, wow!).
The special feature is an interesting recent interview with Mr. Walker where he tells a little about his early life, how he got started in show business and about the making of Cheyenne. His story about what happened on his way to his first interview with legendary director Cecil B. DeMille is especially fun.
This first season is a treat for classic western fans and I'm looking forward to the release of the second season (I hope that's very soon).
Cheyenne.......2007-01-30
This is a terrfic series that brings back many old memories from my youth. I adored Clint Walker and his position on the Indians. And I think his gun and holster may have been the model that Mattel used for their first "Fanner 50" pistol holster set. I still have mine, and I keep it in my safe. Well worn but just holding it brings back such good memories.
Sadly, the DVD set does not have the entire Cheynenne soundtrack like the VHS version (only one show on it though) did. I also think Amazon charged me too much for it. It was about $12 one day and I wound up paying $35 just a few days later and last I saw, the price had gone back down a bit. I've never had this problem before with them. Regardless, the series is great, and you overlook the little querks -- like subtitles in French that for some episodes, I can't make disappear.

Few Hollywood stars have the reservoir of goodwill that James Stewart enjoys; even in his so-so vehicles he's delightfully worth watching. That premise is tested by James Stewart: The Signature Collection which, with one exception, contains none of Stewart's really important pictures. The box does present a collection of movies mostly new to DVD, which gives the set whatever urgency it has from an otherwise mixed bag.
The one important Stewart title is The Naked Spur, arguably the best of the superb series of Westerns the actor made in collaboration with director Anthony Mann in the 1950s (which also include Winchester 73 and The Man from Laramie). The nervous, hard character who emerged in those films is perfected in Stewart's amazingly raw performance in The Naked Spur. He plays an embittered bounty hunter attempting to bring captured outlaw Robert Ryan to the authorities while also dealing with Ryan's companion (Janet Leigh) and two associates who want in on the reward (Ralph Meeker and Millard Mitchell). Mann's command of locations that reflect the emotional lives of the characters is unerring, and Stewart goes all the way with a performance that suggests he is as unbalanced as his villainous quarry.
Two other Westerns are included, both teaming Stewart with Henry Fonda: Firecreek, a grim 1968 High Noon imitator with Jimmy as a small-town farmer defending the place from Hank's band of desperadoes; and The Cheyenne Social Club, a comedy that has Stewart inheriting a bordello, as saddle pal Fonda tags along for the laughs. If director Gene Kelly's approach weren't so crass, the movie might be a lot funnier than it is.
The Stratton Story, a big hit from 1949, casts Stewart in the true tale of pitcher Monty Stratton, who enjoyed some big-league success before a hunting accident cost him his leg. The cornball script is rife with baseball nostalgia, and audiences loved the gee-whiz chemistry of lanky Stewart and tiny, indomitably perky June Allyson. Equally square is The FBI Story, an account of the Bureau's growth from the 1920s onward, with especially lavish reverence for J. Edgar Hoover (who appears in a cameo). Stewart is the agent through whose eyes we see the decades roll by.
The Spirit of St. Louis is one of the most atypical titles in Billy Wilder's career, standing as a straightforward account of Charles Lindbergh's legendary solo flight from the U.S. to Europe. Stewart may have been apt casting for the Lone Eagle in some ways, but he looked far too old to play the young aviator in this 1957 picture. The film has some nagging storytelling problems, but the aviation footage--especially Lindbergh's thrilling liftoff for his record flight--is beautifully shot. Taken together, this set does provide different angles on James Stewart's American Hero (a more complex personality than he's usually given credit for). But it's not his top-drawer work. --Robert Horton
Description
In his early years, Jimmy Stewart came to personify the Everyman. "Hollywood dishes out too much praise for small things,'' Jimmy once said. "I won't let it get me, but too much praise can turn a fellow's head if he doesn't watch his step.'' - Through a Hollywood career spanning 50 years James Stewart has thrilled, touched and delighted audiences with over 80 films. Six of those films are now available on DVD in the all new James Stewart: The Signature Collection.
Customer Reviews:
Great collection of films starring an actor who never gave a bad performance.......2007-06-11
This is a very good collection of films primarily from the 1950's featuring James Stewart from the library controlled by Warner Home Video. The only one missing that I would have liked to have seen from this era is "Carbine Williams", but I can't tell you which of the six included films I would have given up to have that film replace it.
James Stewart was an actor who never gave a bad performance, and this collection features some of his best. I particularly enjoyed the double feature of films starring Stewart and Henry Fonda. They worked well together on the screen, and in real life they were lifetime friends and even roommates back in the days when they were both starving actors trying to get their first big break.
The transfers look great. Even "The Naked Spur", which several people have complained about, looked good to me. The only complaint I would lodge is the lack of any commentaries on any of the films. "The FBI Story" doesn't have any bonus material at all other than a theatrical trailer. "The Spirit of St. Louis", "The Stratton Story", and "The Naked Spur" all have the customary Warner vintage short and cartoon from the year in which the film was made. "The Stratton Story" does have a nice audio-only radio production featuring James Stewart and June Allyson. This being a signature collection, I would have expected at least some of the films to have commentary and something about Stewart's long career. One as long and as distinguished as his deserves it.
Jimmy Stewart turns me on- so does this collection........2007-06-08
By far, a fantastic collection. The two best DVDs in the collection are The Spirit of St. Louis, and The Stratton Story. The FBI Story is third best, then The Naked Spur, followed by the Cheyenne Social Club & finally Firecreek.
If your favorite Christmas movie is "It's a Wonderful Life", then you will appreciate having this box set in your movie collection.
I love it.
James Stewart-Signature collection.......2007-04-11
These films are Jimmie at his best-especially the Spirit of St Louis-They are
hollywood at the peak of film production and all are classics.
No one like Jimmy.......2007-03-30
I love this collecton of Jummy Stewart. there are no stars out there today of this quality. Even a rather poorly written movie such as "The FBI Story," is still viewable because of his charm. I love him and June Allyson together in whichever movie they star in. He and Henry Fonda are priceless in Cheyenne Social Club. Thanks for putting these all together.
Awesome Collection!!.......2007-02-14
This collection of Jimmy Stewart movies is a must have! All of the movies are great...the acting, storylines, everything! Westerns, sports, suspence...something for everyone. All of these movies are ones you can watch over and over again. I highly recommend them for all movie lovers!!

Aaron Spelling's addictive primetime soap opera, Dynasty, ran for nine seasons on ABC, a saga of the rich and super-rich, family feuds and betrayals, class conflicts, revenge, corruption, and power. The 13 episodes included in this first-season boxed set introduce a wide range of characters (quite a few dispensed by season 2) in the orbit of oil empire Denver Carrington and its acquisitive, stop-at-nothing CEO, Blake Carrington (John Forsythe, who was simultaneously providing the off-screen voice of Charlie in Spelling's Charlie's Angels). Of particular interest is the way Blake and Denver Carrington's business problems--a groundswell of anti-American sentiment in oil-rich Arab nations, the recent energy shortage in the U.S., disagreement about developing alternative fuel sources with tax dollars--are a window onto real-world events when Dynasty debuted in 1981.
But drama ripped from yesterday's headlines is not what the show is about, and it isn't long before Blake's conflicts with, well, just about everyone move to center stage. Above all is his pending marriage to former secretary Krystle Grant Jennings (Linda Evans), who loves Blake but worries that he sees her as a possession to be charmed or bullied into compliance with his tyrannical worldview. Complicating matters is Krsytle's old romance with a Denver Carrington geologist, Matthew Blaisdel (Bo Hopkins, leaning hard on his soulful, James Dean impression), who is struggling to make his marriage to the mentally ill Claudia (Pamela Bellwood) work out. Meanwhile, two of Blake's grownup kids, Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) and Steven (Al Corley), are home for the wedding but at serious odds with dear old dad. (Blake wants Fallon to marry a competitor's son in the interest of preserving Denver Carrington. He also refuses to speak with Steven after discovering the latter has been in a gay relationship.) On the horizon is Blake's troublesome former wife, Alexis, who wasn't cast yet (she's eventually portrayed by Joan Collins in season 2), but who makes a veiled appearance (played by another actress) at a particularly inauspicious moment for poor Blake in the season finale. There's more: industrial sabotage, Fallon's affair with a chauffeur, an unexpected bond between Steven and Claudia. Dynasty wouldn't be as much fun without its endless cascade of broken hearts and dire circumstances, and it reminds us that wealth can sometimes be a peculiar kind of hell. --Tom Keogh
Description
The saga of a wealthy Denver family in the oil business: Blake Carrington, the patriarch; Krystle, his former secretary and wife; his children: Adam, lost in childhood after a kidnapping; Fallon, pampered and spoiled; Steven, openly gay; and Amanda, hidden from him by his ex-wife, the conniving Alexis. Most of the show features the conflict between 2 large corporations, Blake's Denver Carrington and Alexis' Colby Co. Passion, glamour, catfights, and the biggest shoulder pads in Denver. Dynasty, was the primetime soap fueled by an all-star cast and "sexsational" storylines. Relive the wrestling matches between Alexis and Krystle, Steven's scandalous romances, Fallon's affairs with practically everybody, and of course, the power struggles at Denver-Carrington, led by the magnetic Blake Carrington.

Wonderful!!!.......2007-03-23
Since I purchased this for my mother, I'll quote her for the review...
"I had not seen this series since it's original airing. In the 1980s my children were not allowed to speak to me or hardly enter the room during my Dynasty night. They had to divert phone calls and visitors for me.
Since purchasing the DVD, I have found the clothes, make-up and hairstyles so much fun to watch. It brings back great memories. Hearing the stories was wonderful and I discovered things I must have missed in it's original airing. There were even characters I had completely forgotten about." -mom
All in all, a wonderful purchase for Dynasty fan!
A Guilty Pleasure - Bring on Season Two!.......2007-03-21
Long, long ago in the 80's I remember watching Dynasty on TV with my mother. So, when she requested this DVD set for last Christmas I bought it. We watched it over the holidays and I quickly became re-addicted to the show, even though neither of us had seen the early seasons and it didn't have Alexis until a brief appearance at the very last second of the last episode. However, The drama of Krystal's adjustments to her new life and the antics of bratty wild child Fallon make up for the lack of Alexis. We can't wait for season two!
The picture and sound are good quality, but I do have issues with double sided DVD's-it's so easy to accidentally touch them and get fingerprints on them.
dynasty-season 1.......2007-03-15
this show was absoulty great....it was a guilty pleasure I forgot I had..but when is Season 2 arriving..waiting too long!

More Cheyenne .......2007-06-28
I'd like more, sir.
Great dvd's, but I'd like to buy more, from Amazon, (there are other webbies that sell all 7 seasons.
I'm slowly collecting all the western movies, & tv dvd's and Cheyenne was one of my favorites.
I can't believe it ran for 8 seasons! I hope Amazon gets more seasons than just the first one.
Thanks WB & Amazon!!!
Clint Walker.......2007-06-21
When God made Clint Walker, He broke the mold. Was there ever a better looking actor in Hollywood? His voice was so smooth that it could melt butter. I recently sent him a card on his 80th birthday and received a lovely e mail back from him. Check out his website where he and Susan have a terrific assortment of Cheyenne products, all autographed by "the big man" himself.
Cheyenne returns!.......2007-05-12
I was plesed with the product. Remembering Cheyenne from an eleven year old boy's perspective, it was wonderful to see him in action again. It was probably better now than it was fifty years ago. A terrific western series, Clint Walker is bigger than life and it was as if I were that boy one more time!
Warner Brothers Really Rocks.......2007-04-21
This is a great DVD, you get three good episodes all " UN-Cut " from three different seasons. Warner Brothers put out some fantastic television back in the 50-60's and would really like to see them release more. The 1st season of Cheyenne is also out and is great. Come on Warners, give us some Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, Surfside 6, Bronco, more seasons of Cheyenne, and on and on. How about Lawman, or Colt 45 ?
Love Clint Walker as Cheyenne Bodie !.......2007-03-14
Loved the 1st season DVD series and can't wait for more to be produced. The 50-60's Western shows were the greatest but especially Cheyenne. I was and still am a fan of his calm demeanor and good looks.
