The stunning documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony tells the story of protest music in South Africa--but as it does so, it tells the story of the struggle against apartheid itself, for the music and the revolution are inseparable. Through archival footage and interviews with musicians, freedom fighters, and even members of the former government police, Amandla! creates a vivid and powerful portrait of how music was crucial not only to communicating a political message beyond words, but also to the resistance itself--how songs bonded communities, buoyed resistance in the face of bullets and tear gas, and sowed fear in the ruling elite. Part history, part musical exploration, part sheer force of life, Amandla! captures both the sorrow and the triumph of life in South Africa from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power. --Bret Fetzer

Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine both received Emmy nominations for their performances in this made-for-TV movie. The plot follows Nelson Mandela's 27-year struggle to end apartheid. That segregation was abolished without bloodshed also had much to do with the political maneuverings of South African President F.W. de Klerk, played with convincing and tired resolution by Caine. Poitier plays the more powerful personality, and shines as the self-assured leader. Filmed in Cape Town, this extremely talky and sometimes static film is intriguing as a historical study. As a drama, it is a bit dry. --Rochelle O'GormanProduct Description
Mandela & De Klerk was filmed in South Africa. Most of the locations are those where the actual events took place, and the dramatized sequences are augmented with newsreel footage to ensure the most accurate portrayal possible of recent historical events.

Also known as Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation, this Oscar-nominated documentary paints an indelible portrait of a complex subject. The film begins with Nelson Mandela's pastoral, if polygamous childhood--his tribal chief father had four wives--and touches on his 27-year imprisonment, historic presidency, and Nobel Peace Prize (shared with former president F.W. de Klerk). Although South Africa's most famous son does not narrate, his words are the movie's ace in the hole as he provides most of the on-screen commentary. (Though his English is excellent, his accent can be a little strong; a few subtitles would've been nice.) Filmmakers Jo Menell and Angus Gibson do an admirable job at alternating between the personal, like Mandela's divorces from Evelyn and Winnie, and the professional, like his turbulent leadership of the African National Congress. That said, the film has taken a few (deserving) knocks over the years for a lack of opposing voices and for downplaying de Klerk's role in ending apartheid. There are some heavy hitters behind this biography, including director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs), who produced, and horn virtuoso Hugh Masekela, who composed the score (along with Cédric Gradus Samson). This Palm World Voices package includes a 26-track soundtrack CD, 48-page book, and even a National Geographic map of South Africa. -- Kathleen C. FennessyDescription

A vibrantly presented and emotionally charged portrait of the dynamic African leader, this needed tighter narration to close informational gaps. For instance, there is very little mention of F.W. de Klerk, although as the corecipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with Nelson Mandela), he most certainly figured greatly in the peaceful passing of the political baton. It may leave you with a few questions but otherwise captures Mandela's remarkable spirit. It follows him from his early days and tribal education through his work with the African National Congress to his election as Africa's first black president. Produced by Jonathan Demme, this wisely includes poetry of Africa, as much a part of Mandela's story as his own inner strength. Nominated for 1997 Academy Award for Best Documentary. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Mandela And De Klerk [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Netherlands ]
Director: Joseph Sargent Manufacturer: RCV ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD ASIN: B000FT74WS |
Product Description
Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: English (Dolby Digital 2.0), Dutch (Subtitles), SYNOPSIS: This low-profile production earned high praise from critics for its outstanding acting and faithful recreation of an important turning point in South African history -- the end of apartheid. It was, of course, black activist Nelson Mandela who led the fight against racial separatism, and Sidney Poitier portrays him with dignity and unyielding resolve as Mandela rises from imprisoned persona non grata to leader of all of South Africa. In the role of Mandela's foil-turned-peacemaking partner, Frederick Willem de Klerk, is Michael Caine. His performance aptly depicts the altruism and pragmatism that induce de Klerk to surrender to destiny and, with Mandela, turn South Africa into a democracy in which blacks and whites are equals. Poitier and Caine both won Emmy nominations for their portrayals, and Caine also earned a Golden Globe nod. To enhance the authenticity of the film, director Joe Sargent and producer Bernie Sofronski shot it in locales where the actual Mandela-de Klerk negotiations took place, spliced in newsreel footage of the historic events, and hired native actors -- such as Jerry Mofokeng (Sfsulu), Owen Sejake (Miangeni), and Farouk Valley-Omar (Kathadra) -- to play minor roles. In addition, Sargent and Sofronski engaged South African musician Cedric Gradus Samson to compose a score played by an all-South African orchestra.
