Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson may have put in a year already with the Los Angeles police department, but that doesn't mean the transplanted Southerner fits in yet. In the second season of the TNT drama The Closer, Brenda is less a fish out of water, but she's still not completely at home with her brash colleagues--some of whom resent her potent mixture of brains and beauty. All 15 episodes from the 2006-2007 are included in this four-disc box set. And aside from a couple episodes where viewers are able to correctly guess the ending about 20 minutes into the show, the cases are taut, provocative, and highly watchable. Much of the show's success is due to Kyra Sedgwick (The Woodsman, Something to Talk About), an actress who seemed poised for movie stardom before she took time off to raise a family with husband Kevin Bacon. As bull-headed as she is soft-hearted, Brenda has a wry sense of humor and delivers her punch lines with a gentle drawl. But don't mistake gentility for gullibility: Cross her and you've made an enemy for life. Even when she's stuck in sitcom-like situations--such as trying to hide from her mother that she's living with her boyfriend--Brenda brings believability to her situation. From the first episode (dealing with the investigation of a brutally murdered police officer) to the last (Brenda's attempt to bring down a terrorist organization), Sedgwick is riveting; no wonder, then, that the Golden Globes honored her in 2007 as best actress in a TV drama. Rounding out the cast are J.K. Simmons (The Spider-Man franchise) as Assistant Chief Will Pope, Jon Tenney (Fools Rush In) as her boyfriend Fritz, and Anthony John Denison (Wild Things) as hard-nosed Detective Andy Flynn. --Jae-Ha Kim
Description
Brenda's back. Finally accepted by her LAPD homicide team after a year of hard-won victories, Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson spends less time fighting her co-workers and more time fighting the bad guys - like whoever left a body in Provenza's garage, or dropped a porn star's head in a dumpster, or offed a drug-addicted heiress. And there's almost as much happening on the domestic scene as the crime scene: Gabriel and Daniels kindle a romance and Brenda and Fritz put the flame under theirs when Fritz moves in. Kyra Sedgwick reprises her acclaimed role of Brenda and makes her the brilliant, complex, flawed, funny and totally irresistible heart of this crime-series powerhouse. Clue yourself in!

Fantastic-as good as 1st season.......2007-07-04
Thoroughly enjoyed the first season and when it was on last yr. as a re-do for the 2nd season, I added oit to DVR. Then watched it off and on till the 3rd season started. When it is on DVD, I will order 3rd season. Kyra Sedgewick is fantastic and they couldn't have a better bunch to support her. The writers must be great as they put out a splendid bunch of writing. Looking forward to having all of the DVD's as long as they are on.

Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick, Personal Velocity) isn't about making friends, she's about getting results. Days after her transfer from Atlanta, the LAPD's Priority Homicide Division decides they can't work with the blunt-talking Southern belle. Fortunately, she has former CIA colleague, Assistant Police Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons, Spider-Man), on her side. As he explains to Captain Taylor (Robert Gossett), who she has just replaced, "She is not miss congeniality...but she's a closer." Set to the sound of urban blues, TNT's The Closer is Columbo by way of Prime Suspect. In other words, Johnson may be as messy as Oscar Madison, but she's as sharp as Sherlock Holmes. Throughout the first season, she'll solve 13 murders, including those of a reclusive mathematician, a Russian prostitute, and a British butler. She won't get much support from her colleagues, except for Sergeant David Gabriel (Corey Reynolds, Broadway's Hairspray)--to the consternation of his co-workers, like Detective Lieutenants Provenza (G.W. Bailey, M*A*S*H) and Flynn (Tony Denison, Melrose Place). Johnson also has a friend in FBI Special Agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney, You Can Count on Me). With his help, she'll eventually settle into her new environment, especially when she lands a house and a cat on the same day (conveniently left behind by a victim). Just as it takes awhile for the chief to grow on her squad--and to get used to driving in LA--Sedgwick's Golden Globe-nominated performance follows a similar trajectory. Fortunately, "Scarlett O'Hara," as the droll Provenza dubs her, becomes more fully-rounded as the season progresses, aided by a superb SAG Award-nominated ensemble cast. Consulting producer on The Closer is former LA District Attorney Gil Garcetti of O.J. infamy. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Synopsis: An offbeat personality, a tough-as-nails approach and a track record as one of the country's leading investigators--these are just a few of the traits exhibited by television's next great detective, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, played by three-time Golden Globe Award nominee Kyra Sedgwick in "The Closer." In her first lead role in a dramatic series, Sedgwick plays a tough CIA-trained detective, with Southern charm, who has been brought from Atlanta to Los Angeles to head up the Priority Murder Squad, a special unit of the LAPD that handles sensitive, high-profile murder cases. "The Closer" is executive produced by the team behind "Nip/Tuck."

KYRA SEDGWICK IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!.......2007-07-03
This is one of the best show's on television. Funny, gripping and endearing at the same time. Kyra is spectacular. Being able to watch the entire season together, awesome. I just can't get enough
ACTING AND WRITING AT ITS FINEST.......2007-07-01
I LOVE THIS SHOW! Kyra Sedjwick and her crew make for a fine cop drama. Week after week I'm glued to my television set to watch the Closer. It's one of those shows that will go down in history. It's refreshing to see a strong woman on cable and it was more exciting to watch the cast mesh so well together. Into its third season now - if you aren't watching this one, you're missing out.
Season 1 - Superb.......2007-06-21
Before this series went on air I went to the TNT website and read up on it. I found it to be very interesting and seeing how I'm not a TV buff like some people, I fell in love with it. However, I had never heard of Kyra Sedgewick's name until this show and I didn't know she had previously acted in movies. I have never been a fan of TV Shows because I find most of them are really stupid. I was amazed by the storyline in this TV series and after watching the first episode I fell in love. I don't mind Kyra's accent in this show because she does a good southern accent and while some of you might disagree she does over do it at times, which is true, she does to her best at acting. Each member of her squad has unique personalities and together they solve murders committed in California. I enjoy the way Brenda and Fritz's romance starts up and finally becomes steamy near the end of season one. The DVD quality is just as it is presented in the description but I have don't have any problems with the sound quality. I've watched the DVD's four times since I got them. If you wall don't have TVIO then buy this set. It's worth the money. If you like NCIS I am sure you'll enjoy this one. 10 out of 10.
Southern Belles.......2007-05-31
make such good detectives! This is a great show and I hope it lasts for a long time.

I just do not see the appeal............2007-06-22
I mean the cases are bland, the acting wooden, and the writing non-existent. They say this is the highest rated cable show around, but i have yet to see any facts to back that up.
Fives stars for both seasons although those with high def TVs should be warned the first season is NOT anamorphic (2 is though).......2007-03-24
First up--Brenda Johnson has made me confess with her wily ways--the second season of "The Closer" is equally as good as the first. There are some plot developments that may season two unique though. First up, Brenda's mom (Francis McDormand)visits. Fritz moves in. Then movies out because Brenda's mom will be staying. As usual Brenda makes the bad guys talk whether it be the bizarre (the case of the cop and the psycho killer who mysterious killed each other at exactly the same time)or unexpected (a juror drops dead from cardiac arrest during a trial where the jury had been threatened).
I love this show with its mix of the quirky character of Johnson (who constantly fights the urge--not successfully I might add--to eat junk food)and her ability to figure out a crime. Unlike "Monk" this isn't focused more on the comedy elements but integrates them into a rich, suspenseful dramatic series. Sedgewick deserves to be nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal.
A fun and fascinating mystery ride, "The Closer" focuses on Deputy Chief of Police Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) is a fish out of water lured from Atlanta to L.A.by Assistant Police Chief Will Pope (J.K. Simmons J.J. Jameson from "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2") lead an elite unite that tackles high profile murder cases with her unusual approach to solving crimes. Her Georgia accent immediately sets her apart from her colleagues. She's much savvier underneath her down home accent than many give her credit for allowing her, like Columbo to tackle crimes that others might not be able to solve. Like Columbo and Monk she's got her own quirks (an addiction to junk food, she shows up at a crime scenes with her sick cat--named Cat--in a paper back and her southern charm can't quite hide her abrasive personality). It's a marvelous TV show with a terrific supporting cast (Jon Tenney, Robert Gossett among others).
"The Closer" looks extremely good in this presentation with all 14 episodes (the finale is a two hour episode or two-parter however you want to look at it) episodes on four DVDs. The first season box states that the show is presented in full screen but we get the original letterboxed images as broadcast on TNT. "The Closer: Season One" isn't anamorphically enhanced which results in it being presented on my widescreen TV with bars everywhere (to the sides, on the top and bottom).
For the first season there are no featurettes (for example he superb set that Universal put out for "Monk" has a lot of background on the show)on the development of the series, how Kyra Sedgewick became involved in the show, interviews with the supporting cast or a glimpse into the creative process of the show. We get deleted scenes for the bulk of the episodes (they were clearly cut for time constraints) presented with the time code at the bottom of the images so clearly most were cut prior to the final assembly of the show.
The second season comes with a good featurette on the show and the season gag reel. The second season is anamorphically presented so it fills a widescreen TV without the black bars.
No commentary tracks which is disappointing but the price is right for the show and it's presented in thin packs making it easier to store the DVDs without taking up much room.
Well written, performed and directed "The Closer" looks solid in its DVD presentation but could be improved significantly for the second season. I'd suggest that Warner present the show anamorphically enhanced and include some featurettes or commentary tracks in addition to the deleted scenes. This top notch show one of the best of the season deserves a deluxe treatment but because it's on TNT and has a smaller audience it's unlikely we'll probably see either one of these improvements for future sets.

Four extremely beautiful people do extremely horrible things to one another in Closer, Mike Nichols' pungent adaptation of Patrick Marber's play that easily marks the Oscar-winning director's best work in years. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who specializes in portraits of strangers; Dan (Jude Law) is an obituary writer struggling to become a novelist; Alice (Natalie Portman) is an American stripper freshly arrived in London after a bad relationship; and Larry (Clive Owen) is a dermatologist who finds love under the most unlikely of circumstances. When their paths cross it's a dizzying supernova of emotions, as Nichols and Marber adroitly construct various scenes out of their lives that pair them again and again in various permutations of passion, heartbreak, anger, sadness, vengeance, pleading, deception, and most importantly, brutal honesty. It's only until you're more than halfway through the movie that you'll have to ask yourself exactly why you are watching such a beautifully tragic tale, as Closer is basically the ickiest, grossest, most dysfunctional parts of all your past relationships strung together into one movie. Ultimately, it falls to the four actors to draw you deeper into the story; all succeed relatively, but it's Law and Owen whose characters will cut you to the quick. Law proves that yet again he's most adept at playing charming, amoral bastards with manipulative streaks, and Owen is nothing short of brilliant as the character most turned on by the energy inherent in destructive relationships--whether he's on the giving or receiving end. --Mark Englehart

Clive looking good.......2007-06-27
A really good pick if you want a slew of good actors and especially Clive Owen. Interesting, kept me from falling asleep, a problem I have now that I have a yound child at home, ha! had some nice dreams after this too, what a plus.
an ugly movie about uglier people.......2007-05-12
forty years ago a great young director named mike nichols made his film debut with a movie ("whos afraid of virginia wolff?" for those who dont know) about 4 lost lonely self-deluded people who are forced to confront the lies of their lives in one long night. and now, rather than edward albee, we get someone calling himself patrick marber, who wrote both the screenplay and the play on which it is based, and has with nichols, (and four otherwise talented actors whose names i wont embarrass you and them and myself by listing) succeeded in making one of the uglist most nasty movies i have ever seen. these people could only exist in the minds of a misanthrope, and their stilted dialogue is evidence of his being an untalented misanthrope to boot. women are [...] and deceivers, men are cads and betrayers, sex is a commodity, art is a farce, &c: if these are the lessons nichols has learned in 4 decades, i pity diane sawyer ...
I don't want to get closer or why did not they ask Helen?, .......2007-04-17
My three favorite films from 2004, "Sideways", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", and "Before Sunset" have a lot in common; they all deal with ability to connect with other people, with meeting one's true love and losing it, with memories that will not go away, and with possibilities of second chances.
There are more similarities in three my favorite films - they all have characters I liked, I care about; often, weak and certainly not perfect; sometimes, confused and immature but sympathetic, and real.
This is not the case with "Closer". My problem is that none of its four main characters was at least slightly interesting, appealing, likable or just realistic. And it is not the biggest problem that they were not likable - I can live with that and still love and enjoy the film. Examples - Nichols's own fascinating debut, "Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf". George and Martha (Liz Taylor and Richard Burton) were a couple from hell but like a theme song in "Closer" goes, "I could not take my eyes off them". I still remember Taylor saying in the end of the film, "George and Martha: Sad, sad, sad" and it was sad. I'd learned something about the characters that were deep and complex, troubled and disturbed. They were persons, the human beings, not the caricatures. Another example, Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from the marriage":
"Bergman and his leading actors Liv Ullmann and Arland Josephson give one of the most truthful, honest, heartbreaking and credible portraits of a couple, one of the most intense character studies ever done on film. For five hours, we share twenty years from the lives of Johan and Marianne as well as their love, hate, misunderstandings, insecurities, anger, jealousy, denial, sadness, pain, despair, and loss. We witness the moments of incredible tenderness and unexpected and shocking violence, both physical and mental. There are no depth that they have not descended in the search of themselves and the meaning of their relationship."
As far as a film about the selfish, self-obsessed, unsympathetic characters goes, "Faithless", directed by Liv Ullmann and written by Ingmar Bergman could be the most similar in its theme to "Closer" and they both have almost identical twist plot toward the end. The difference is huge, though. "Faithless" has a high and unbearable tragedy that characters brought upon themselves, "Closer" is smug, full of itself and tries to hide its emptiness behind often disgusting and unnecessary dirty language. Did I learn something about four beautiful people in "Closer"? Sure. Dan's sperm tastes like Larry's but sweeter; Alice's c*** tastes like heaven, and Anna does not kiss strange men and does not understand why sex is so important. I don't want to get closer to learn all this; instead, I'd like to respond like Helen Sinclair, "No, no, don't speak. Don't speak. Please don't speak. Please don't speak. No. No. No. Go. Go... Don't speak."
Enormously talented and famous (and rightly so) Mike Nichols made an elegantly looking, well acted (Natalie Portman and Clive Owen are very good) and quite amusing film which is a screen adaptation of a popular play of the same title. Popular or not, the play was not a great work of writing and its problems are very obvious after adaptation to the big screen.
2.5/5
I just love this movie.......2007-04-02
I saw this movie for my first time a couple years ago and I love it so much that I had to buy my own dvd. I can watch this movie over and over and I still don't have enough. It is one of my top five movies.
Great acting all around, at times spectacular performances by Owen and Law.......2007-04-01
First off, the acting is really consistent and very good
throughout the whole movie. The screenplay by Marber and
the direction by Nichols are fantastic.. I certainly agree
that this is one of Nichols best in years..
Initially, I didn't know who Clive Owen was.. after having watched
the movie for the seventh or eighth time, I have to admit that he
stood out.. but Jude Law's performance is also noteworthy.. he's just
a spectacular actor.. both Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts deliver
solid performances.. this is an intense, entertaining and thought
provoking film about love and passion.

Product Description

Adapted by Patrick Marber from his award-winning stage play.
Customer Reviews:
Worth it just to see Natalie Portman in heels!.......2007-06-07
I've only seen about 1/4 of this movie so far, but will update soon. The picture quality on Blu-ray seems good to very good -- not stunning, but decent enough. The image fills up my entire screen with no black bars, which is really great. I will update soon after I'm done watching it.

Closer and Closer.......2005-12-27
Police suspect that a brutal serial killer has patterned the murders of three women on a series of novels written by Kate Saunders (Kim Delaney), whose writings focus on similar crimes -- and whose paraplegia is the result of a vicious attack by the same killer years earlier. With a new novel about to be published, Kate finds herself at the murderer's mercy as his attacks begin again.
VERY GOOD Suspense movie! I was lucky enough to get this one for $1.00 and LOVED IT!!
WHO'S TO BLAME.......2005-02-02
One of the underlying themes of this well done made for TV films is what responsibility should a creative person take for the work they create? In this case, a female mystery writer has written two best selling novels about a serial killer named the Gargoyle. Both books have seemingly prompted a copy cat killer to mimic the crimes of her novels. The general populace says the author should be just as guilty as the killer. While this is not something I agree with (I've read several serial killer books and have yet to kill anyone), it makes for an interesting underlying theme, and ultimately, a reason for the murders. Kim Delaney stars as the novelist, who was rendered disabled after her encounter with the first copycat killer. She has secluded herself in an out of the way cabin, and doesn't have much of anything to do with anyone, except her personal assistant, Jenny, and her personal trainer, BJ (a rugged John J. York). When the copycat killings take up again after her second best seller, the FBI moves in, which also includes Delaney's former lover, agent John Grady (Scott Kraft). A sleazy tabloid news anchorman also figures in the plot, and director Fred Gerber keeps us guessing in this suspenseful and well acted chiller.
Closer and closer.......2003-06-15
This movie was much better the first time I saw it, when it was called Copycat with Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter and Harry Connick Jr.
Horrible acting by all the supporting characters, too many half-baked and poorly explained threads all over the place, incompetant police and FBI agents/procedure, and not really that hard to figure out who the killer is.
Bringing a degree of disbelief suspension to movies is one thing, but to think that if the FBI and Police from 9 states were so unable to find any suspect, that they wouldn't have run the backgrounds thru on everyone involved with the case is just stupid.
Police aren't that dumb.
And it was kinda funny seeing Kim Delaney who is obsessively paranoid and over-protective of herself all movie long to instantly drop all her wards the moment the movie is about to end and you/we know the killer is about to show up.
Yea that would be the killer who gave himself away halfway thru the movie with his [crummy] acting.
edge of your seater!.......2002-01-27
kim delaney is excellent in this movie about a serial killer who's inspired by her best selling book! The whole time you're wondering 'who dunnit'. This one's good!
Exciting, Nerve Racking and Terrific !.......1999-09-01
Closer and Closer is a thrilling film in which someone is inspired by a book which kate (Kim Delaney) writes, a book based on a murderer. The film is great, its one were you'll be asking yourself till the end 'Who's The Murderer ?' A film to watch.

Book Description
The story of the Bible is the story of God’s desire to be with his people. God is extending himself, stretching out to reach us and to fill our lives with his presence. Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us, but the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!

Good small group resource.......2007-05-15
Ortberg does it again! This is a good series for any small group. The video teaching is good and the production quality is high. It also works well in large group settings (church Sunday school, etc), which is the way I used it. I would recommend it.
Great study materials.......2006-03-16
The package was a complete one; book, study guide, PowerPoint, & video presentations. I read the book first, then proposed it to my church as a book study, which they enjoyed very well. John Ortberg is a good author and presenter of his materials, challenging common ideas about God with correct biblical ones.
