This family favorite, a south-of-the-border variation of the classic boy-and-his dog story, stars Michel Ray as Leonardo, a young Mexican boy who appeals to the president of Mexico to spare his beloved bull from death in the bullfighting ring. Does the bull meet a grisly fate at the hands of a sombrero-topped matador? We're not telling, but charming performances and some gentle tear jerking make The Brave One an agreeable movie for kids. The film is also known for an interesting footnote of Hollywood history: When it won the Academy Award in the now-defunct category of best original story, screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (using the pseudonym "Robert Rich") was unable to accept the Oscar due to the infamous Hollywood blacklist. He officially claimed the award in 1975. --Jeff Shannon

Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Deep thoughts.......2007-07-05

This movie invokes deep thoughts of our civil liberties and injustices brought on by the government.

4 out of 5 stars I've seen this movie three times........2007-05-25

Still can't writing a good review. He is part Souix indian, also fbi agent, But who killed Jimmy? Grandpa know all about Ray, lots of mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tony Hillerman Ever Filmed!?!.......2007-04-14

Although not actually a story by Hillerman Thunder Heart is the perfect marriage of Mystery and Mysticism that has yet to fully translate to either the Silver or Small screen for an actual Hillerman Novel. Why is this? The bottom line I believe is Val Kilmer. Kilmer's cultural transformation is compelling from this initial arrival to his Last Stand.

5 out of 5 stars Real life drama.......2007-03-09

This movie is a great movie. Val Kilmer plays his part excellently. I watch this movie over and over again. Definately a favorite of mine. A must see!

4 out of 5 stars A top-line movie........2007-01-03

I found Thunderheart to be a very touching movie, with an excellent cast. People who are part Indian, like myself, will find much to relate to. The settings, in themselves, tell a story that is only too true about Indian life in these times. It is humorous too, with a sly tongue-in-cheek humor that will appeal to many people. I have viewed this picture many times and get something new out of it constantly. Worth evey penny, and inexpensive to boot. People who like this one should also buy "Last of the Dogmen". Well cast also, and timely, with the thought that this might really happen. These are movies you will KEEP.

"The Brave One" has an authentic look in the bullring, on ranches and in Mexican streets...

"The Brave One" has humor: When Gitano becomes a remarkable bull with a fine physical construction, he proved his spirit to Carlos Navarro's red car...

"The Brave One" has strange attachment: The charge of the noble bull against a ferocious jaguar to protect Leonardo' life...

"The Brave One" has determination: In front of the Monument of Mexican President Benito Juarez, the persisting and exhausted boy got an idea... Why not to go and meet the President, the only authority that could save his bull...

"The Brave One" has Bravery: Gitano offered to the public a magnificent spectacle of skill, grace and courage...

"The Brave One" has suspense: When the 'moment of truth' is at hand, the little Leonardo, all anguished, couldn't see Gitano in front of his 'Hour of Truth.'

"The Brave One" has a big surprise: Clamorous screams from the public are heard stronger and stronger... Handkerchiefs are moving in the air as a petition to the president of the bullring to grant Gitano a 'pardon' (Indulto).

"The Brave One" has a terrific climax: The jump of Leonardo into the arena before the astonished crowd who stopped the thunderous applause...The little boy was running to his bull, and Gitano moving rapidly towards him...

Another highlights of the film: The weaning and branding of the bulls and how they are tested in the open fields; the bulls displaying a proper spirit are retained for future bullfighting; La Fiesta Brava fills resplendently in the gold and pink brocades of Mexico, mixing with the elegance of swirling capes...

The spice of superb supporting performances, most notably by Rodolfo Hoyos, father of Leonardo, who tries to make Leonardo understand that the pet bull was born to die in the ring - the reason of his life - and Jorge Treviño as the friend who remains faithfully near Leornardo to the end...

With a tremendous score and an outstanding color photography of exceptional beauty, Jack Cardiff realized the most beautiful and expressive scenery of the Mexican landscapes... "The Brave One" had the flavor of the bullfight game and its devotees and hangers-on... Scenarist Dalton Trumbo won an Oscar for his Original Story.

5 out of 5 stars The Brave One scores with fans.......2006-01-22

This is the best family-type film dealing with the sometimes controversial subject of bullfighting. The photography, score and story are all first class even though some parts seem dated from a 2006 perspective. Well worth having in your video library.

5 out of 5 stars The Shield of Love.......2005-08-26

The Brave One was beautifully crafted in 1957 by blacklisted author Robert Rich and immediately established itself as a superb classic. The tale is of a small Mexican boy and his enduring love for his courageous pet bull. Set in Mexico, a boy discovers a cow has been killed after delivering and orphaning a male offspring. Naming the calf Gitano, The boy becomes it's friend and caretaker. Realizing the boy's loneliness, the parents encourage the bond, but fail to emphasis the eventual fate of the animal. Throughout the Calf's life the boy's love inexorably grows unaware of his parent's financial responsibility to the bull's true owner. By the time the animal has grown to market size and becomes a cash commodity, the boy's parents are torn between their son's love and their duty to the Patrone. Using subterfuge, the parents separate the two. Returning from a fool's errand, the boy discovers his best friend and lifetime companion has been sold for the purpose of bull fighting and its eventual destruction. Despite the frantic warnings of his parents that it's too late to save the animal, the small boy adroitly played by Michel Rey, sets off to save his courageous friend from certain death. The boy visits everyone from the Patrone to the Governnor of Mexico in a vain attempt to alter the fate of his pet. The film culminates with the boy's magnificent bravery before an arena filled with spectators. True loyalty to any animal has never had a more poignant test of love and courage. For any viewer with a human heart, this tear-wrenching film will leave you joyfully weeping. ****

3 out of 5 stars A BOY AND HIS BULL.......2003-08-14

Earnest, Disney-like film about a boy who tries to save his bull from the matador's ring in Mexico City. The ride atop an old farm truck into Mexico City is a beautiful scene suggesting a "Wizard of Oz" affection and the only drawback is the kid's unremarkable ability to show expressions of joy, sadness, excitement, etc., as the camera focuses in on his face. The bull makes for a unique, likeable hero. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay of 1956.

4 out of 5 stars A family adventure for all.......2000-07-26

This is a beautiful movie of a little boy in Mexico, his pet bull and the adventures that bonds them both. This movie has a great sound track that compliments the scenery, the story and the people.
