Great movie about before the flood!.......2007-06-03

At turns both mesmerizing and frustrating, Mike Figgis's 1999 experimental feature interweaves an audacious dramatization of the Adam and Eve myth with autobiographical vignettes from the director's life. In Figgis's golden rendering of the Genesis tale, the first humans are a black man (Femi Ogumbanjo) and a white woman (Hanne Klintoe), who emerge one day, fully formed, from a lake, and regard each other with playful wonder. They discover, like children, their anatomical differences, and explore the surrounding green paradise until coming upon the tree of knowledge. From this they eat and almost instantly reevaluate one another with a steely lust. Thus their, and our, fabled fall from grace ends in the mire of sexual possession and walled-off feeling, a tragedy that Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) uses as a touchstone for the contemporary story of a filmmaker named Nic (Julian Sands). Nic's own youthful experiences with various kinds of formative humiliation, including finding his teenage girlfriend in bed with his best friend, are presented as flashbacks meant to resonate with his marital unhappiness today. Less clear are other moments out of time that don't particularly connect with Figgis's major theme, especially an odd development in which twin sisters (both played by Saffron Burrows), each unaware of the other's existence, have a fleeting, worlds-are-colliding encounter at an airport. Figgis also reaches into a grab bag of Nic's other old sorrows, things that don't uniquely inform or enhance the film's point, and muddies things up a bit. But the sheer hubris of marrying a myth with a memoir carries the day here, and Figgis leaps the hurdle of potential self-parody with a certain courage. --Tom Keogh

Based to a great extent on the authors life experiences, this film consists of a series of interwoven allegories based on the eternal values of good, evil, and retribution. Autobiographical scenes taken from the authors own life often portray a reality which makes you feel that you may have once been there yourself.
This is one of a handful of films which have to be regarded as great literature. You won't watch it just once.

the plot line was so good it was awful

it jumped from a dog getting humped to a little blue person being hit by a car
it is amazing
if i had to watch one movie over and over again in my life
this wouldnt be it
but it would be number 2 or 3 on my list because it is that good

what was that about i mean if i hit a little blue guy i would not stop driving
i would actually drive faster

but anyways this movie makes you wanna cut your friend in his sleep the apply rubbing alcohol and neosporin to the cut and then put a bandaid on it while your friend is still alseep

Very Odd, Slightly Innovative.......2006-04-20

I've never seen a movie by Mike Figgis (although I just rented "Leaving Las Vegas" and will watch it later) and I don't know what drew me to see this movie, but Figgis has a very interesting vision. The movie somehow stretches 103 minutes with little events or dialouge occuring. However, I barely noticed the lack of dialouge until much later in the film. The unique thing is events do occur when there is no dialouge. The movie does have a plot that unfolds very quickly and it has some of the strangest plot points I've ever seen. No synopsis could accurately describe what this movie is about or what it's going to look like, but I'll try. The movie begins in Kenya, where we meet a young boy named Nic who watches a young Kenyan girl read to an old man from The Bible in nothing but lingerie. Then, years later, Nic is with his girlfriend (who's name I don't recall) who's father has just died. She ignores him and he catches her necking with some guy in her room. Then, we go back and watch as they attempt to have sex on the floor but are caught by her father who doesn't even notice what they were trying to do. Then, we meet Nic years later. Nic is married and has a young son and his marriage is obviously (although we are never told this directly) in turmoil. But, that's OK because Nic has a mistress who also happens to work with him. He's a film producer and he's traveling to some other country to shoot a movie. During all this, we are shown short vignettes of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, discovering new things. The entire story (with no dialouge whatsoever) is told here. The snake, the fruit. Except they're thrown out by a bunch of cops and barking dogs. Odd. Some of these scenes are very explicit too (especially the ones where both of them urinate), I'm amazed they got away with only an R rating. But, as I've mentioned; there's a huge lack of dialouge.
This would be unbearable if it weren't for the score. The music in this film is absolutely amazing (and composed by Figgis, talented guy) and I'm surprised it didn't get Oscar nominated. I do agree with a lot of the reviews on this site, but this movie is pretty affecting in some parts which really does show talent if you're capable of having an affect on someone with out saying anything. The Adam & Eve section could be deleted from the film and they would not have to edit out a single other scene and the movie would still be good. But the movie's heart & soul really is these scenes. They're beautiful, if not a bit creepy. But, this is a strange movie that is not something you need to add to your DVD collection and it's not a movie you'd probably watch again. But the first time you watch it, it's a strange/weird/creepy experience.
I do recommend it, but rent it before buying.

Too Artsy-Fartsy.......2004-10-23

I will grant that I don't watch a lot of art or independant films, but I checked this one out because I think Saffron Burrows is a fine actress and incredibly beautiful. This movie seems to be trying to impress people with an "artistic" re-invention of the Garden of Eden tale woven with a more modern tale. I got what he was trying to say with this (or at least most of it), but I thought the movie and its' message just didn't work.

Gotta see it to believe it........2004-04-27

2001: A Space Odyssey meets Blue Velvet. It's as carefully paced and music-laden as the former, as far from redemption as the latter. Don't read any blurbs or summaries, just watch it.

Jazz-age cutie Corrine Griffith stars as a showbiz-minded girl who leaves her humble family of bakers ("I could never be satisfied making pretzels all my life") in Budapest. In a hilarious sequence, she tries her hand at hifalutin "opera singing" while employed at a distinctly questionable cabaret in Paris. Somehow this leads to impersonating royalty at a fancy hotel in Monte Carlo, with the expected confusions and complications. The delightful blend of sophistication and slapstick recalls the comedies of Ernst Lubitsch, but it was directed by Lewis Milestone, best known for the Oscar®-winning All Quiet on the Western Front, made two years later. I was going title my review "A Sheer Delight," but in another critique listed here Graceann beat me to it! So I can only second that assessment!

I recently attended a library-sponsored film series, where the speaker said he hadn't programmed comedies because they don't age well and he doesn't find them funny. Well, that film expert hasn't seen *Garden of Eden* (nor, apparently *Gold Diggers of 1935*).

I was interested in this film because I'd researched the career of Lewis Milestone years ago, and also because my Amazon travels have introduced me to the hitherto unfamiliar Lowell Sherman--who, when directing himself in one early talkie, seemed a mirror of John Barrymore, only to turn out to be Barrymore's real-life brother-in-law. Sherman is a tad more youthful in this late silent, but his sound films allow him to use his voice to considerable comedic effect.

Watching this silent, I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. And just when it looks like they're about to repeat a joke from an earlier plot segment, they take the story into new territory. I fear I'm of an age and temperament that doesn't equate "film comedy" with the current American trend in bodily function humor. In contrast, this film manages to be just plain funny from start to finish--and risque on its own terms.

If in the future I organize my own library-film-society series on the movie musical, I'll open with *Garden of Eden*--yes, a SILENT musical! Abetted by an excellent music accompaniment on this DVD.

One final observation: contemporary audiences might find the color short subject "The Toy Shop" disturbing, which is more of a commentary on our own "sophisticated decadence" than on the admitted sentimentalism of that earlier time.

Splendid Romantic Comedy.......2006-05-24

The Garden of Eden referrs to the outside of a prestigious hotel where most of the action in this film happens. However, in order to get there, we must backtrack. The film begins with Corinne Griffith, a girl named Toni with ambitions to become an opera star. She leaves her family to go to Budapest and is reduced to appearing in a cheap showgirl act. After being fired for being unwilling to comply to a wealthy man's advances, she and seamstress friend Rosa (Louise Dressler) team up together as mother and daughter. It is revealed that Rosa is really a Baroness and the two plan to live a life of luxury for a couple of weeks on her annual pension. In the process, Toni falls in love with an enthusiastic man (Charles Ray). It seems that the story will end there, in a typical halo of happiness, but an unexpected twist continues the story.

This film is a delightful romantic-comedy. What makes it exceptional is the artistic aspects. Lewis Milestone has directed a truly beautiful film here with fun traveling shots, playful use of deep focus, and glorious halos of light around the stars. The print is slightly scratched, but the images are clear and crisp. Griffith does a splendid job in the starring role; her subtle acting style does not degrade the film at all. Robert Israel has composed a fitting music score for this release.

Included are two short subjects. The first is The Toy Shop, a two strip technicolor film about a little girl's dream inside a toy shop on Christmas. The print is fuzzy and it seems it was included because of the lost color dream sequence from The Garden of Eden. The second short is called Hollywood The Unusual, evidence of why Hollywood is so alluring to tourists. It roams over the various styles of buildings ranging from English, French, Spanish, Middle Eastern, Aztec, African, and the Egyptian and Chinese designs for Grauman's famous theaters. The film is clear and beautifully restored.

This DVD is truly worth the money.

A Stylish and Enjoyable Silent.......2006-05-10

This beautifully produced and sophisticated film starring the lovely Corinne Griffith made in that period just before sound pictures would overtake silent art remains as fresh and entertaining today as it was when introduced to the moviegoing public of the age.

Lewis Milestone, like King Vidor, Frank Borzage, Cecil B DeMille, and Allan Dwan, would bridge that gap between silent and sound film and be successful at both. Perhaps best remembered today by noir buffs for "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" and film buffs in general for "All Quiet On the Western Front," he should also be remembered for "The Garden of Eden."

A lovely score which is integral rather than distracting and some stunningly stylish art direction from the great William Cameron Menzies add just the perfect touch to the duo of Corinne Griffith and Louise Dresser. The film very much has the look of those glossy Paramount productions from the early 1930's when it ruled Hollywood.

Toni LeBrun (Corinne Griffith) is shocked when she shows up at a Paris cabaret for what she thinks is a job singing opera. Her first shock will come when she meets Madame Bauer, a woman who dresses more like the other gender. She bills Toni as the "pleasant embarrassment" for her decadent male patrons. A trick with the lighting will show off Toni's beautiful legs but prove the last straw for Toni and Madame Bauer's assistant, played winningly by Louise Dresser.

Dresser is actually a Baroness with a pension who only works at the cabaret in Paris so she can travel to Monte Carlo for two weeks of the year and live like royalty at The Garden of Eden Hotel. She will take Toni under her wing as a mother would which brings about some funny and romantic complications in Monte Carlo.

To reveal more would not be prudent but suffice it to say many sophisticated comedies of the 1930's owe a great deal to "The Garden of Eden." Milestone's direction is flawless and Corinne Griffith is as well. Her performance is quite natural and full of humor and honesty. She is both sweet and hilarious, and a truly great star.

This was one of the great silents and deserves to be remembered. Milestone's film is itself a milestone for many such films of the sound era which would follow in its wake. A must see for true film buffs.

Sheer Delight.......2006-02-18

This sumptuous release is everything a silent film buff could ask for - lovely restoration, a beautifully appropriate score and a wonderful story. Corrinne Griffith is cute as a button, and Lewis Milestone directs her and the other stars - Louise Dresser, Charles Ray and Lowell Sherman, among others, with a light touch. The Garden of Eden has now joined Show People as a film I screen for friends who think that silents are static and boring. The print is so pristine that it sparkles, and the extras are generous and interesting.

IN THE BEST ROMANTIC STYLE........2005-04-22

This is a delightful film based upon a play by Avery Hopwood, an adaption of a work by Rudolph Bernauer and Rudolf Oesterreicher, featuring a radiant and vivacious Corinne Griffith as Toni LeBrun, a would-be diva who is adopted as ward by a baroness (Louise Dresser) who takes her to Monte Carlo where romantic adventures then take place. The work is directed by Lewis Milestone, one of the few Americans who may be described as a cinematic auteur, predicated upon his clear stylistic methods, in evidence here in this leisurely paced effort, in particular with clever establishing, long and detail shots used in the seamless decoupage typical of silent filmmaking at its best, and certainly present in this influential picture. The keen expressivity of art director William Cameron Menzies and the technically flawless cinematography of John Arnold are absorbed by Milestone as this trio combine in presenting a stream of interesting imagery, some of which has been copied but not bettered in the sound era. A highly polished supporting cast backs Griffith, notably Charles Ray as her romantic favorite, Lowell Sherman as a knavish would-be nobleman, Maude George, who portrays an androgynous stage manager and Dresser in a typically well-defined performance as Toni's adoptive mother. Rosa Rio, at the Wurlitzer, plays the original score with a great deal of wit and neatly interpretive passage-work; a perfect aural mating with a sublimely visual feast.

Dreaming of Paradise.......2005-10-23

Maria Novaro, a wonderful Mexican storyteller, and film director brings to the screen a magnificent crash of cultures and traditions. In this film (1994), Novaro exalts her characters and their triumphant discovery for happiness in life. It is considered a Social Drama but you can discover more elements as you watch it. The solitary characters are looking for inner peace, identity, freedom, love, meaning, perhaps the metaphoric experience of going to the Paradise. Ironically, this "garden" setting is nonetheless the famous multifaceted border city of Tijuana, Mexico. This is a famous place where many cultures have been intertwining for many years. In this film, we see Mexicans, Americans, and Chicanos with intricate, and similar experiences of solitude. We can hear Spanish, English, Spanglish, and other dialects like Mixteco, which is not very typical for the habitual audiences. We also see a variety of ages, young, middle age, and mature. Men and women carried on with roles not very popular or traditionally accepted. We can see a mixture of cultures, rich, poor, mystic, liberal, and conservative. As an innovator, (there are not many women directors with her popularity) Novaro's stories seem to present the element of: "I was there", and "I know what I am talking about". These stories are not magic tales, nor cheese episodes. They are just plain and daily hard life at the border where everyone is dreaming to get to Paradise.

Very inaccurate........2007-03-25

I agree with T. Rose's review. The fish turned to tiger's (evolution), God was presented as the "all seeing eye". Eve was Adam's "friend" instead of wife. The list goes on. We were very disappointed.

Disappointing/mediocre.......2007-02-15

I agree with the above review about the several problems with this video. I just ordered all 13 dvd's of this series. We watched Jonah last night, and that was a good one. This was was disappointing. I don't understand why these bible series' can't just stick to the story as it is written in scriptures.

1)They have to add all these imaginary things that never happen in real life.

2)In this particular video they added way too much dialog that isn't noted in the scripture, some which is questionable.

3)I totally hated how they didn't follow the scriptures consistantly in this story. They had Adam and Eve name the animals instead of Adam naming them before Eve was created. This was probably done to keep from offending people who are feminists. I hate that kind of stuff with a passion.

4) I did not care for God being an all seeing eye--which is a masonic/cult symbol.

Not worth the money - If truth matters to you.......2006-06-09

Even though Charlton Heston gives a 3 star rating for the opening 5 minutes dialog explaining what happened in the garden. The animation was very troubling.
1) They had fish turn into tigers.
2) They had land animals created on the 5th day instead of the 6th.
3) They had God as the "All seeing eye"
4) They had Eve being created before the naming of the animals.
5) They had the angels guarding the garden look more like little mad children rather than something to fear.
6) They had the fig leaves magically became animal skins
7) Oh yeah the big one. They have our whole purpose is to make it back to the Garden of Eden.

Each of these troubling parts is very important when trying to explain what the Bible really says. You may think I am too legalist about these items. That is fine for truth does matter to me and for my children. I over looked a lot of creative liberty in the story, but the above mentioned problems I can not over look. If you want any truth avoid this video.

My 5 and 4yo daughters love this series in general. I haven't seen many other bible videos to compare this to but the story really helped bring Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel to life. It also sparked lots of questions to discuss with my children.
