The original 1947 version of this Valentine Davies story follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. Natalie Wood is the little girl who tells him she doesn't believe in Santa, and Maureen O'Hara and John Payne are the couple who help Kris through a trial in which he must prove he's the jolly fellow from the North Pole. A sweet movie and perennial Christmas favorite, this is one of those movies that gets under your skin and must be revisited every so often. --Tom Keogh
Description
Six year old Susan has doubts childhood's most enduring miracle Santa Clause. Her mother told her the "secret" about Santa a long time ago, so Susan doesn't expect to receive the most important gifts on her Christmas list. But after meeting a special departement stare Santa who's convinced he's the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all - something to believe in.

Another classic.......2007-06-27
This is another classic movie of which I have more than one version. I do enjoy this version's "Kris Kringle" very much and Natalie Wood was fantastic as Susan. Maureen O'Hara made a great mother and the story speaks for itself, if you believe. . . .
Miracle on 34th Street.......2007-06-25
Was there ever a better big-screen Santa than Oscar winner Edmund Gwenn? This timeless Christmas fable about an elderly retiree who sets New York a-twitter with his claim to be the sleigh-riding patron saint of the North Pole captures the spirit of the season like few other holiday films. Young Natalie Wood is delightful as the disbelieving girl who, hewing to her mother's urban sophisticate views, thinks the notion of elves and Saint Nick is preposterous. Repeat viewings won't diminish the charming allure or the endearing message of "Miracle."
Product Quality.......2007-03-22
Excellent quality film. The DVD contains both the original black and white version as well as a colorized version. Highly recommended for every family, we love it.
Value-for-Money.......2007-03-12
I have another version of this movie in LD. I like the story very much and its idea of using the Post Office to prove officially the existence of the Santa is so much better than the 1994 remake. This edition provides the best of both world (Colour and B/W)for me as well. All in all, it is a great value package for a young at heart.

Anyone skeptical of updated retreads of Christmas movie classics may be genuinely surprised by this 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street. Based on the 1947 holiday classic, this new Miracle sticks close to the original's story, though it offers more contemporary, crisper pacing and a tone curiously more reflective--even sorrowful--than before. Richard Attenborough is charming and twinkly as Kris Kringle, the part that won Edmund Gwenn an Oscar. Mara Wilson is the little New York City girl who doesn't believe in Santa Claus until Kris persuades her otherwise. Elizabeth Perkins is her hardened mother, and Dylan McDermott plays the handsome lawyer next door who defends Kris during an insanity hearing. While screenwriter John Hughes has toughened up the dialogue a bit, and McDermott's intensity looks like a dry run for his then- future role on television's The Practice, this Miracle is as persuasively sweet as the one previous. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Miracle on 34th Street.......2007-01-29
I love this movie. The DVD arrived quickly, I am very pleased.
Some Classics Are Best ..........2006-12-05
The 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street does not bear comparisons or accolades to the original 1947 classic. The film had already been remade prior to this version, and one asks, why? And also, why change a bit of the storyline? John Hughes should be praised for his attempt at producing a holiday film, but it may be an attempt to compete with other films that came out in the early to mid 1990s, the Home Alone movies, Jingle All The Way, and the Santa Clause.
The unique trait about this version is its comic book-like quality. The film is fiction, and is based on Valentine Davies' book of the same name. Indeed, Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough) saves the day by substituting as Santa Claus for Cole's Thanksgiving Parade. However, there is a villainous quality to the film with the appearance of the antagonist character of the film, rival retail store president of Express Superstore, Shellhammer (Simon Jones III), who wants to engage in a Cole's department store takeover. Unfortunately, this is the unnecessary part of the film. For a moment, one may think this may be a period film, which takes place about the same time as the original -- the costumes of the characters, and the all too familiar New York City scenes.
However, that is not the case. This is a present day version, which emphasizes quite loudly the meaning of Christmas; look closely at the concluding courtroom scene. The main premise of the storyline is intact, but with minor changes. Yes, the store name has changed from Macy's to Cole's, Fred Gaily (John Payne) has changed to Bryan Bedford (Dylan McDermott), and the courtroom scene where Judge Harper (Robert Prosky) determines if Kris Kringle is exactly Santa Claus has slightly changed as well. And there are also the concluding scenes, which are questionable.
Miracle of 34th Street attempts to engage the viewer. The cinematography emphasizes much illumination, and the photography literally shows the characters, Susan (Mara Wilson) and Dorey Walker (Elizabeth Perkins), glowing like angels with the sun shining over them in order to depict a dream-like quality to the feminine characters.
For many who enjoy the original 1947 version of Miracle on 34th street, it is best to avoid this version unless you happen to see it on TV. It is deserving of three stars because of its holiday theme.
Grandma Carol.......2006-08-01
I don't usually like "remake" of the old clasic movies but this one is priceless. Don't discount the original one though. I have them both and love them!!
Excellent.......2006-07-02
Well.. I saw this one, before the "original". :) so.. for me, I liked this one better :) Elizabeth Perkins is beautiful and unlike the original movie character, she has a bit more softness to her, which I found beautiful.
The little girl who played her daughter was wonderful too. Actually the whole cast was :)
Definitely worth the money, and don't forget the original. I liked that one, but I loved this one ♥.
A movie for movie buffs to debate.......2006-01-08
This remake with slightly different plot twists, modernized dialogue and a much faster pace definitely gives us movie buffs something to argue over at IMDB. Each one has its place in the representative period of time. As a baby boomer, though, I have to spend my DVD cash on the original.
"Miracle on 34th" has been remade before this one, as a TV version with David Hartman as the lawyer in 1973 - many normally discerning viewers liked that one too. Fundamentally, the basic story is calls out to almost all of us. We should be thankful that more Christmas movies aren't remade...well, never mind because they all are (I can't wait for Charlie's Angels to have "A Wonderful Life.") Teens and younger may prefer the faster pace of the 1994 version, but I thought the original had more sincerity, more nostalgia (I remember Gimbel's!), much more heart...and the real Santa Claus.
All versions of the movie are based on the book of the same name by Valentine Davis - I highly recommend it. It's an easy read and there's a reason we all feel so fondly for one version of the movie or another.

Customer Reviews:
Great bargain, but a mixed bag........2007-01-24
This is a great bargain. Don't get me wrong! I would buy this again if it got lost. Can't beat the price for 4 good Christmas flicks.
Although I do wish they had included a newer edition of HOME ALONE in here. This one is the older letterboxed edition that is not enhanced for widescreen TVs. If your DVD player/TV/projector has the picture zoom option like mine, you can escape the problem with the black frame all around the picture on a widescreen TV, but the resolution/picture quality is still poor, of course.
JINGLE ALL THE WAY was the same thing, despite the deceptive cover which stated that the movie on the DVD was included in both Full Frame and Anamorphic Widescreen versions. Not so! The same crippled leterboxed frame.
No complaints about either the MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, which is presented here in beautiful Anamorphic Widescreen, or A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which, as a made for TV movie, is presented in Full Frame, maintaining the original aspect ratio.
All in all, a great deal for the money.
Nice box set!.......2007-01-12
I bought this box set for my friend's children as a Christmas present. I really just wanted to send "Home Alone," but it came with all the other films too, which was a bonus.
My friend and her family moved from California to Massachussets last year. The kids (age 4 and 6) were very entertained when they saw Governor Arnold acting in the Christmas movie "Jingle All the Way." It was a big hit and reminded them of home in California. Plus it entertained the parents too. An unexpected bonus, and a great story to tell, don't you think?
"Home Alone" reminded them of their visit to see us in Chicago a year and a half ago. That was my intent in sending that movie to them.
"Miracle on 34th Street" reminded them of when we all went to New York City last spring when we went to visit their Massachussets home.
Although my review is unusual to say the least, it was a very meaningful Christmas present to the kids since the box set highlighted all of the places we have visited together over the past year. I am sure that is not what you intended when you put the set together, but it was a really great gift. Thank you!
Christmas Classic Box set.......2007-01-10
Fabulous value! The home alone movie was a great movie to be included in this box set along with the classics!
A Real Christmas Keepsake.......2007-01-10
This set is a real sleeper that can fit into every home. The iconic fame of "Home Alone" among kids is no secret, but at least one other movie makes the set worth buying. "Miracle on 34th Street", the only remake IMHO ever done better than the original, is a beautiful tapestry of uplifting story, touching script, great cast, and magnificent cinematography. It's my favorite contemporary Christmas movie. "Christmas Carol" with George C. Scott was well made, but it's hard to supplant the sentimental older favorites with Reginald Owen and Allistair Sim. "Jingle All the Way" with Arnold Schwarzenegger had a great message, but seemed to lack holiday atmosphere. Not bad, though, as a filler item. Overall, a set well worth the money.

--Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
All in all, it is a great value package for a young at heart.
gift for mom.......2007-03-08
she needed a VHS of the movie, i bought her one. Paid one great price!

--Tom Keogh

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
The original 1947 version of this Valentine Davies story follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. Natalie Wood is the little girl who tells him she doesn't believe in Santa, and Maureen O'Hara and John Payne are the couple who help Kris through a trial in which he must prove he's the jolly fellow from the North Pole. A sweet movie and perennial Christmas favorite, this is one of those movies that gets under your skin and must be revisited every so often. --Tom Keogh
It's a Wonderful Life
Now perhaps the most beloved American film, It's a Wonderful Life was largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through repeated TV showings. Frank Capra's masterwork deserves its status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered work of Dickensian density. George Bailey (played superbly by James Stewart) grows up in the small town of Bedford Falls, dreaming dreams of adventure and travel, but circumstances conspire to keep him enslaved to his home turf. Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director's optimistic vision may have darkened during his experiences making military films in World War II). Capra's triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties and disappointments of life, while affirming--in the teary-eyed final reel--his cherished values of friendship and individual achievement. It's a Wonderful Life was not a big hit on its initial release, and it won no Oscars (Capra and Stewart were nominated); but it continues to weave a special magic. --Robert Horton

Good movie but..........2004-04-03
Miracle on 34th Street is a wonderful movie but on the DVD that I bought the sound isn't in sync with the actors lips but is a little bit ahead of them. However, It's a Wonderful Life gets five stars; there are no problems with that DVD.
a true classic... evey collection needs this one!.......2002-12-25
This the best of the classic holiday films... much like Christmas Vacation... your true holiday spirit will bubble through as you watch this again and again. This a great story of faith & love...its a story for all ages as well. Jimmy Stewart is great.

George C. Scott as Scrooge & the Original "Miracle on 34th".......2003-11-30
This is an interesting pairing of holiday DVDs in that we have the 1984 television version of "A Christmas Carol" with George C. Scotta as Ebenezer Scrooge and the classic 1947 original version of "Miracle on 34th Street." Usually these sets go for two classic black & white movies or two contemporary color versions, so this is definitely a mixed set, but of two solid holiday offerings.
Scott's performance as Scrooge is very good for most of the film. You would think that since this is George C. Scott that playing a crotchety old miser would not be much of a stretch. But Scott actually does something different with Scrooge. This time around he is not bitter as much as he is worn down, more of an empty soul than a being consumed by darker emotions. Screenwriter Roger O. Hirson actually makes some excellent additions to the original story, fleshing out why the happy young Ebenezer we see in our visit to the past becomes the old Scrooge who undergoes this Yule time transformation. The only knock on the performance from my perspective is that like many fans of "A Christmas Carol" it is hard not to remember the superb performance by Alastair Sim in the 1951 film version and find the Oscar winning Scott coming second in the comparison. Still, this is arguably the most thoughtful performance of Scrooge you will see.
But even if Scott's performance is found lacking by such a strict standard the rest of this production is superb. The supporting cast is as fine as has ever been assembled to play the other roles: David Warner providing a nice twist on Bob Cratchit, Susanna York as his wife, Frank Finlay as the ghost of Jacob Marley, Joanne Whalley as Fan, the girl who got away from young Ebenezer, and Roger Rees as Scrooge's nephew Fred (and the film's narrator). The trio of ghostly visitors who visit Scrooge all in one night are equally strong, with Angela Pleasence as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Edward Woodward getting everybody to say "Look, its the Equalizer!" as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Michael Carter as the best Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come that I have seen. Above all it is the cast and the thoughtful script that make this a superb adaptation.
Since "Miracle on 34th Street" begins with the Macy's parade on Thanksgiving Day, it is the obvious movie to watch on Turkey Day to begin the Christmas season. I know am not alone in my belief that Edmund Gwenn IS Kris Kringle, which means he IS Santa Claus. Of course they gave Gwenn the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1948, but the film also won Oscars for Best Writing, Original Story (Valentine Davies) and Best Writing, Screenplay (George Seaton). Maureen O'Hara plays Doris Walker, a single mom who insists on bringing up her daughter Susan, played by adorable Natalie Wood in one of the great childhood performances of all time, in a no-nonsense manner, which means no fantasy, no fairy tales and certainly no Santa Claus. Boy, is she ever wrong, although it takes Kris longer to convince the mother than it does to work his magic on the daughter.
This version of this classic holiday film offers up the long trailer in which the publicity department tries to figure out how to market the film to the masses, which is a nice added bonus. You have to remember that the head of the studio had the delusion idea that since this was a good movie it should be released in May because that is when more people watched movie. However, the point of owning "Miracle on 34th Street" is to be able to watch it when it best fits your holiday schedule and cry over your favorites scenes. I start losing it every time Susan overhears Kris talking Dutch to the little refugee girl and sings with her.
Even if this is not your personal favorite version of "A Christmas Carol," it is a solid offering and by no means a disappointment. As for "Miracle on 34th Street," it is a true classic and I pity the person who does not have it on their personal list of Top 10 Christmas movies.
Scott IS Scrooge!.......2001-12-15
Scott plays the quintessential Scrooge in this adaptation. Don't understand why it is not shown on TV..........
Oh well, don't care I own it. Would not be Christmas without it. Oh sure, I still like the Alstair Sims' version also, but George C. Scott brings an added depth to Scrooge's character. Great Scott!
