Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point, an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops. It's like a counterculture precursor to Smokey and the Bandit, with the road as the last bastion of freedom and the DJ as a combination commentator and mystical guide. The slim plot offers a network of society drop-outs that aid the "last free Man on Earth" (as the DJ describes him) on his obscure but obviously symbolic quest while flashbacks paint Kowalski as a world-weary hero. It doesn't really make much sense, but the amazing car chases and excellent stunt work are stunningly set against the American west, beautifully captured by cinematographer John A. Alonzo. Vanishing Point is most assuredly a product of its time, the heady, anything-goes era of rebellion in the early 1970s. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Thrills, spills and a handful of pills. It all adds up to one of the most spectacular car chases in motion picture history! Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, the last American hero, who set out to prove that he can drive from Denver to San Francisco in just fifteen hours. Along the way, he meets an old prospector (Dean Jagger), a snake worshipper, a nude woman on a motorcycle, and a blind D.J. (Cleavon Little) who "sees" danger ahead in this super-charged, action-packed adventure!

Made two years after Citizen Kane, this 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre sure looks like star Orson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (In fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no mistaking Welles's masterful hand in the film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. --Tom Keogh
Description
Jane Eyre secures a job as governess to the child (Margaret O'Brien) of the troubled Edward Rochester, sire of Thornfield, a mysterious English manor. When she hears strange cries and noises from a distant wing, her inquiries are rebuffed. As time goes on, Jane and her master fall in love and decide to marry. But their halted when a visitor suddenly reveals the shocking secret that Rochester has kept for years.

La la la loved this movie.......2007-07-04
I am a big orson welles fan and i absolutely love this movie. i could watch it all day everyday and i pretty much have.
Gothic Romance at It's Best.......2007-06-13
I love this version of Jane Eyre. Orsen Wells with his deep, husky voice is great as Rochester. The mousy Jane. They are wonderful together. This is a must have classic to add to your collection.
Now that's a lady!.......2007-06-13
Where have the Joan Fontaine's of the world gone? That gentle and queit character; unassumming, demure, beautiful but nonetheless powerful. I honestly can't recall any other movie that made me feel myself the love that was growing between two other people.
Romance for the Soul.......2007-06-12
Jane Eyre is timeless and I now own every version made. The Orson Welles is so classical and how could anyone resist the chemistry between Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine!!
Best Jane Eyre film version.......2007-06-08
Really enjoyed the movie, love the book. It's Orson Welles so what can you say?Great film.

This charming Disney live-action picture is a genuine sleeper. It's a variation on the old boy-runs-away-to-join-the-circus story, except this time the boy is a girl. After she joins a traveling show in the 1930s, spunky teen Sonora Webster (Gabrielle Anwar) learns the ropes and eventually lands a plum role in the program: riding a horse off a 40-foot-high diving board into a tank of water. Well, Sonora thinks it's a plum, anyway. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken has the usual love interest, a brush with tragedy, and some worldly wisdom (the latter doled out by old pro Cliff Robertson, in a nice role as a crusty barnstormer). What makes the movie memorable is the performance of the lovely Gabrielle Anwar, the doe-eyed actress who later danced the tango so memorably with Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. The movie may be sappy--no surprise with that title--but Anwar provides bright star wattage and a plucky role model. --Robert Horton
Description
Everyone will cheer Walt Disney Pictures presentation of this captivating real-life story of Sonora Webster's determination and courage -- now on DVD. A runaway orphan, young Sonora (Gabrielle Anwar) persists for a menial job mucking stables in Doc Carver's traveling stunt show. Her great wish is to become a death-defying "diving girl," but Doc (Cliff Robertson) refuses her pleas. Undaunted, Sonora's gutsy resolve finally convinces him to give her a break. On the brink of stardom, however, a cruel twist of fate threatens to destroy her dream. With the help of a loving friend (Michael Schoeffling), Sonora must prove that if you want something badly enough, anything is possible!

Great Family Movie.......2007-04-04
What a wonderfully heartfelt and uplifting movie. I watched it as a young girl with my Grandmother and I still love it today. I can't wait to watch it with my own children.
Childhood Classic.......2007-03-28
I remember when I was younger going down to the local market to rent this movie on a weekly basis. I was devastated when the original VHS was sold and I couldn't find this movie anywhere! I e-mailed Disney via their website several times asking about having it released on DVD so that someday my kids could enjoy this heartwarming story as much as I did when I was a kid. I always received responses that Disney would think about it and perhaps re-release it but it was never a big "she-bang" like the other Disney classics. When I searched for it on Amazon just on a whim I about fell out of my seat when I saw that a DVD version was available! I think this is a truly wonderful story that will be enjoyed for generations to come - I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a wonderful family movie.
Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.......2007-03-24
I am a 13 year old girl who loves horses. This movie was informative of some of the events they used to do with horses during te deppression years. I think that it shows the strong relationship of horse and rider in a remarkable and different way. The girl being so strong and so determined is a great model for all girls to make their wildest dreams come true.
Wild Hearts Can't be Broken.......2007-03-09
I have loved this movie ever sience I was a child. It is a timeless classic for all generations to enjoy. I highly recommend this movie!!!

Hoo-hah! After seven Oscar nominations for his outstanding work in films such as The Godfather, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon, it's ironic that Al Pacino finally won the Oscar for his grandstanding lead performance in this 1992 crowd pleaser. As the blind, blunt, and ultimately benevolent retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, Pacino is both hammy and compelling, simultaneously subtle and grandly over-the-top when defending his new assistant and prep school student Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) at a disciplinary hearing. While the subplot involving Charlie's prep-school crisis plays like a sequel to Dead Poets Society, Pacino's adventurous escapades in New York City provide comic relief, rich character development, and a memorable supporting role for Gabrielle Anwar as the young woman who accepts the colonel's invitation to dance the tango. Scent of a Woman is a remake of the 1972 Italian film Profumo di donna. In addition to Pacino's award, the picture garnered Oscar nominations for director Martin Brest and for screenwriter Bo Goldman. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Two Perspectives.......2007-06-19
There are basically two ways to see this film. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees it as an inspiring, uplifting story with a feelgood ending. The fan of realism and originality sees it as a predictable and formulaic cliche. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees Al Pacino's performance as colorful, facinating, and larger than life. The fan of realism and originality sees Pacino's performance as over the top and lacking in any subtlety. The fan of classic Hollywood sees Pacino's closing speech and the ending of the film as inspiring and heartwarming. The fan of realism and originality sees the speech as a lame moralization and the ending as well as Pacino's character transformation to be a phony and unrealistic sellout to popular sensiblity.
If you are looking for the familiar crowd-pleasing kind of entertainment that Hollywood has always been trusted to provide, you will definitely find it here. But if you are a fan of artistic cinema you will wonder how Al Pacino could win an oscar for a role like this in a film like this and somehow not win for Godfather II. In fact, you will probably wonder what Pacino, as a dedicated method actor with such a great vision for playing complex and interestingly subtle characters, was thinking when he played this role.

Jane Eyre--the mother of all gothic romances--gets abundant passion in this 11-episode BBC miniseries. Young Sian Pattenden is wonderfully willful and impetuous; viewers will immediately identify with the child Jane as she fights against ill-treatment at the home of her aunt and at boarding school. It's a shame to see her grow up into Zelah Clarke--until Clarke asserts her own quiet yet fierce spirit. The plot really starts rolling when Jane takes a position as governess at Thornfield, a handsome estate owned by the imperious and tortured Mr. Rochester (Timothy Dalton, a few years before he became James Bond). From there, this 1983 adaptation rips through the perilous highs and devastating lows of Charlotte Bronte's powerful novel, in which the courtship of these two prickly personalities gets twists and turns galore. Though the visual style is a bit pedestrian, the well-crafted script and skillful performances grow more gripping with every episode. The necessary feverishness springs from simple yet effective means, like macabre laughter floating down the halls of Thornfield. The scenes between Clarke and Dalton crackle with chemistry; Bronte fans will not be disappointed. --Bret Fetzer

1983 Jane Eyre.......2007-07-05
If you had to do a book report on Jane Eyre but didn't want to read it, this is the movie to see. Very acurate comparison with the book, but a little lacking in imagination as far as art direction goes. The acting is fair. Die-hard Jane Eyre fans would love this movie. My biggest complaint with it is the fact that, as it is a television series, there is a break every 20 minutes where the credits are given and the chapter displayed which makes it even longer. If you are looking for good cinematography, script and acting, my favorite is the 2006 Masterpiece Theatre version. It doesn't follow the book as closely, but it is a beuatifully done film.
Almost true to the author.......2007-06-27
I expected any film made about Charlotte Bronte's, "Jane Eyre" to corrupt the story missing the flavor of Ms. Bronte's openness. The novel being a wonderfully written page-turner, I was wonderfully surprised to find the BBC version of Jane Eyre to be true to the novel. One glaring possible exception, Timothy Dalton was too good looking to play Mr. Rochester, but I forgive him.
Good but a bit long...........2007-06-13
I know that is exactly what some of the earlier reviewers particularly liked about this Timothy Dalton/Sian Pattenden version but I felt like there were just too many words at times in this adaptation of Jane Eyre. (I even fell asleep at one point.) Even though I am certain that it is more true to the book than the Ruth Wilson/Toby Stephens adaptation, I personally preferred the Toby Stephens one.
bronte film.......2007-05-25
I enjoyed this film, however he format is distracting. The frequent breaks and credits of the masgterpiece theater production break the flow of the film.
English novel reader.......2007-05-25
This particular adaptation of the novel remains my all-time favorite. The screenplay stays very true to the book, the acting is very good, and the portrayal of mid-19th century English society, living conditions, class differences, etc. is very well done.

Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft had been playing their respective roles as Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, on Broadway for some time before director Arthur Penn (The Left-Handed Gun) built a mesmerizingly beautiful film around their layers-deep performances. Duke is astonishing as the deaf, blind, mute Keller, who awakens to an awareness of language under Sullivan's determined guidance. Bancroft is fascinating and focused. Penn wisely kept his adaptation unencumbered by cinematic indulgence. The black-and-white film is sparse and charged with the immediacy of the drama. The script is by William Gibson, who also wrote the original play. --Tom Keogh

The picture fooled me........2007-06-27
I guess I was expecting a colorized version of the movie because of the picture displayed. I guess I'll pay attention next time, however the movie is the one I wanted.
A Must-See for EVERYONE!.......2007-05-23
And that's no exaggeration. The Miracle Worker has everything you could possibly want in a movie and more. The powerful ending scene is as beautiful as it is gut-wrenching; poignant doesn't even begin to describe it.
As for the extras, there's really only one worth mentioning, and that is the original theatrical trailer. I enjoyed watching it because it gives you a glimpse into the past and shows you that although movie trailers were originally quite simple, they gave the audience so much and made them want to run out and see it.
Watch this movie with your family and I'm sure you will all cherish it for years to come.

HOMELESS IN AMERICA: Twenty-One Songs of Social Conscience for the 21st Century
Dated but still a terrific landmark .......2007-04-01
From its earliest version as an orginal live-tv Playhouse-90 drama (gone are the days when tv could give us quality like this. We're stuck with 2nd-rate sex farce and toilet jokes), to the hit play, to the hit movie, this film displays almost every overdone effort made by Hollywood, starting in the late 50's, to mimick European "New Wave" techniques. It's to Bancroft's and Duke's credit that the production doesn't descend into total hysteria from beginning to end. The Playhouse 90 original, which I recall seeing as a teen myself, was somewhat more subdued and, IMHO, more powerful and effective in the final scenes. That said, this is still a remarkable piece of cinema -- despite the fact that there's not a single accurate ethnic speech coloration in the whole movie, and it has some of the laughably worst attempts at Southern accents I've heard since Gone With the Wind and the Tammy movies. It's incredible to think that the movie's imbecilic producers didn't want to import Duke or Bancroft from Broadway to recreate two of the most memorable dramatic roles of the 20th century. The excellent b&w print now seen on DVD is largely the work of Cuban director / photographer Ernesto Caparros who had been involved in cinema since the 1930's. Not only will tv never again give us work like this, but I can imagine how many car chases and napalm bombs Hollywood would have shoved into the script if "Worker" were produced today. Thanks to Amazon for including this very good DVD in their free-shipping list. Younger viewers who know Duke only from cable replays of her vapid tv sitcom will probably sit with mouths dropped and eyes popped open when they see how tv utterly wasted the supurb talent Patty displays in this movie.

Audrey Hepburn's last Oscar nomination was for this adaptation of Frederick Knott's famed stage thriller about a blind woman, a con man (Alan Arkin), and a doll full of heroin. Thanks to Hepburn's husband, a photographer who does a good deal of traveling, she's unknowingly come into possession of said doll, which was given to him on a plane by a comely young drug runner who winds up dead. The murderous Arkin, aided by sympathetic henchman Richard Crenna, will let nothing stand in the way of his obtaining it, even if it comes down to assaying multiple "personalities" in order to visit and terrorize Hepburn; Crenna is unwillingly enlisted to help. However, the "world's champion blind lady" (as Hepburn sardonically states) is more than up to the task of defending herself in her basement Manhattan apartment in a heart-stopping climax that to this day still defines the way horror movies with jack-in-the-box psychos are made. Despite the obvious staginess of it all (the entire action takes place in Hepburn's apartment), it still works magnificently, thanks to Hepburn's steely will and Arkin's deadly, sadistic madman. A helpful hint: turn out all the lights when you watch it; theaters back in 1967 did so, killing the guiding lights during the film's last 15 minutes. We can't tell you why, but trust us, it's worth it. --Mark Englehart
Description
A photographer's blind wife, trapped in her New York apartment by an evil trio who are ready to murder to retrieve a heroin-filled doll hidden in her apartment, cleverly outwits them. Music by Henry Mancini. Based on the long running Broadway play by Frederick Knott.

Wait Until Dark.......2007-07-02
Audrey Hepburn ventures into edgy territory in Terence Young's "Wait Until Dark," based on the stage play by Frederick Knott (writer of "Dial M for Murder"). The Oscar-nominated actress excels in the role of a sightless woman fighting for her life in a basement New York flat, and Richard Crenna is solid as her unlikely protector. Still, it's Alan Arkin who really sets your teeth on edge playing one of the screen's creepiest villains. This nifty suspenser starts slowly but builds to a terrifying climax. Just wait.
a must see classic movie.......2007-04-10
This movie is great in several ways - all Audrey hepburn fans would love it. She shows that her talent is more than just a beautiful face.
It is also a front runner, because it shows the artistry of a great filmmaker, who can build suspense and tension merely with the use of light, of staging, without resorting to the cheap tricks of excessive violence. The film's use of light and shadow is amazing. The timing of the characters exits and entrances is like watching a finely tuned play. ( this was a play actually.) This one will have you on the edge of your chair. The famous ending scene will take your breath away every time, even if you've seen it before! When Suzy's husband finally gets home and realizes what has happened, his reaction is lame - they should have rewritten that one. But that is only 2 minutes, so don't let that keep you from watching this one. Rent this movie for your teens who like suspense thrillers - they will enjoy it.
A Jolting Ending.......2007-03-31
There is not a lot you can write about this movie, Wait Until Dark, without giving it away. I can only say that if you enjoy surprise endings, this is a great movie.
Highly Suspenseful!.......2007-03-21
Audrey Hepburn does a fantastic job of portraying a young blind girl caught in a very desperate situation. Great seeing her in a role that is not just centered around her beautiful appearance, but an actress with many other great talents. Alan Arkin does one fantastic job of playing a cruel and visious killer with no heart or soul. This one will keep you on the edge of your chair!
Classically Chilling.......2007-02-21
This isn't Breakfast at Tiffany's. Neither is it Nightmare on Elm St. But Wait Until Dark, starring Audrey Hepburn, is truly chilling. Hepburn plays a blind lady who, through the circumstances of the plot, is pitted against a dangerous criminal and his two henchmen. She slowly realizes she is in danger and, after smashing the lights in to level the playing field, must struggle for her life in her apartment. More along the lines of a thriller like Pyscho than a horror film, Wait Until Dark is scary, but classy.

i just loved this movie, i first saw it on hallmark channel and just wanted to see it again, first i loved the horse side of it and then the way annie just never gave up even when it would have been very easy to. and her love for her horse when he went blind was very heart warming, especially when annie rode him in the drassage event and he did it all perfect, all in all i just loved it from beginning to end.

The Long Shot.......2007-03-24
I am a 13 year old girl who loves horses. I thought this movie showed the true statement never give up. For all of the hard, terrible, and deppressing times the owne never gives up her love of horses dreans, and strengths even though they were over powered by weakness. There is true connection and love in this movie and it tells all girls that in the long run they can always have a happy ending.

Even when his trademark twist-ending formula wears worrisomely thin as it does in The Village, M. Night Shyamalan is a true showman who knows how to serve up a spookfest. He's derailed this time by a howler of a "surprise" lifted almost directly from "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," an episode of The Twilight Zone starring Cliff Robertson that originally aired in 1961. Even if you're unfamiliar with that Rod Serling scenario, you'll have a good chance of guessing the surprise, which ranks well below The Sixth Sense and Signs on Shyamalan's shock-o-meter. That leaves you to appreciate Shyamalan's proven strengths, including a sharp eye for fear-laden compositions, a general sense of unease, delicate handling of fine actors (alas, most of them wasted here, save for Bryce Dallas Howard in a promising debut), and the cautious concealment of his ruse, which in this case involves a 19th-century village that maintains an anxious truce with dreadful creatures that live in the forbidden woods nearby. Will any of this take anyone by genuine surprise? That seems unlikely, since Emperor Shyamalan has clearly lost his clothes in The Village, but it's nice to have him around to scare us, even if he doesn't always succeed. --Jeff Shannon
Description
M. Night Shyamalan (SIGNS, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE), the director who brought you the world's greatest thrillers on DVD, now creates his most thought-provoking triumph yet ... breaking international records and dazzling audiences around the globe! THE VILLAGE is a smart, edge-of-your-seat chiller crawling with terrifying surprises and frightening twists and turns. An isolated, tight-knit community lives in mortal fear of an oppressive evil inhabiting the forbidden forest just beyond their tiny village. So frightening that no one ventures into the woods ... until one villager dares to face the unknown. With unforgettable performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, and newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, this powerful motion picture is one of Hollywood's best psychological thrillers and ranks with the best of Hitchcock!
Customer Reviews:
fun, scary, and thought-provoking.......2007-07-03
I love thriller films, especially when they make a worthwhile point, and this one definitely fits. Not only was it an excellently-made movie with a plot that took many unexpected turns, but it also made me think about the role fear plays in our lives and the use of lies to perpetuate fear and control people. I see that a lot of people didn't really care for this film, but I really liked it.
Those We Often Speak Of.......2007-06-21
Although this film was widely successful, many felt that it did not live up to Mr. Shyamalan's previous efforts. I beilieve that is an incorrect assessment.
The Village is a truly beautiful film which tells one of the finest love stories in many years. The performances by all are top-notch, especially by the two leads, Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard. The dialogue and usage of symbolism are exceptional, yet only part of the movie's many charms. The first time I tried to watch the movie, I found it slow and uninvolving. I was greatly mistaken. Much time is spent developing the state of the setting and establishing the main characters, rather than immediately jumping headlong into the action. This makes for a much more satisfying picture for those who like to think, as is the case with all of Night's films (save perhaps Lady in the Water, which is questoinable).
Few motion pictures capture the depths of mystery the way The Village does. Some say that they guessed the ending long before it came, but I find that unlikely. The clues are definitely there, as they should be, but everything has been orchestrated so perfectly it is hard to tear yourself away from the story long enough to consider the hidden truth.
Night is a master at revealing the right details at the right times. The pace can really only be thought of as slow if the viewer doesn't care to pay attention to everthing that is going on within this small village. Love is the unsung hero of the village, whose roots run deep within the hearts of nearly every person who lives there. The Village takes us back to a simpler time where morals were the very foundation of a community, where everyone was free to trust everyone else and happiness could be found in even the most mundane things. Churning the butter, sweeping the porch, washing the dishes - these are joyous undertakings in which each member of the town contributes to the good of all.
As for the creatures, termed "Those we do not speak of," they sure do speak of them a lot! Despite the fear the creatures evoke, it also strikes one as just a little humorous that was the term given to the mostly unseen monsters of the woods. Despite this, The Village is very intense indeed. It is mesmorizing to watch as the audience alternates between the goodness of the people and the fear that exists just out of sight.
I cannot say enough goos things about this underrated film. I loved every moment of it. Perhaps the best feature is how it shifts perspectives in mid-stream, but fails to lose any of its credibility. One day when you are feeling particularly low, know that you can count on this wonderful story to move you, to lift you up. The ending is awesome too!
A Good Place to Visit.......2007-06-12
This movie doesn't have quite the scare factor of Shyamalan's "Sixth Sense," nor quite the same level of twist-ending. However it is still an absorbing movie that provides a satisfactory wrap for all the mystifications it dangles along the way. And more than that, it is capable of provoking a lot of serious discussion among any group of friends who see the movie together.
In fact, this would be a good movie to screen for almost any classroom because of the lively, larger debate it invites. It is suitable for almost all individuals old enough to consider such issues, without in any way being a watered down, sanitized "kids' movie."
It is likely to fraction viewers off into the pros and the cons, with all sorts of shadings in between. It is especially relevant when considering communities that set themselves apart, either intentionally, such as the Amish, or through the necessities of historic struggle, such as many Native American communities. How far should things be allowed to go in these instances of isolation? You may well ask yourself that after you have finished watching "The Village."
The Village - more great M-Night.......2007-06-09
I give this movie a thumbs up. Yes it wasn't that scary but I don't think that was M Nights main point to the movie. For me ( spoiler here ) its about a group of people who try to escape society because something criminal and tragic happened to each of them. And though they have set up
a society of there own, tragedy still finds them. The romance and scary
elements are the icing on the cake. I really liked Bryce Dallas Howards
performance.
The story line itself is fatally flawed.......2007-06-04
My problem with this work, which I viewed for the first time last night on television rather than though a DVD, is that what should have been a great movie with many good points in its favour turned out to be a "Bomb". This was no fault of the excellent casts and the artistic cinematography. The projection of an almost Amish like isolated Victorian era village community was very well -handled. As at least one other reviewer has written, the damp leafless November woods and mists lend as eeriness most suitable to the setting of the story. However, the story line itself is fatally flawed. The ending could have been saved had a better extra twist been added than the one we are shown. I do not want to include any spoilers here. In fact part of my problem is that I learnt too much about the movie before I watched it. Inevitably when there are so many dismal film works shown indiscriminately on TV channels one resorts to site such as Amazon or IMdB for some sense of whether a film to be screened on TV is worth watching or taping.
I am very fond of what might be called "twilight zone" genre films despite the fact that so few of this kind are successful. It is probably one of the most challenging film script genres to write. So I would have incorporated and expanded the feeble attempt at an extra twist right at the end of the film of a kind that would have strengthened the predictable and not very impressive main twist with a less predictable ending. This is not a movie that most people might enjoy, even if it were improved by such suitable amendments and additions that might occur at some time in the future, but for a minority it is an extremely well done if not a perfectly finished work of art. Thus I give it three stars.

Customer Reviews:
I know this sounds corny but the movie really did win a special place in my heart.......2007-05-13
PLACES IN THE HEART is an excellent movie that takes place in 1930's rural Texas. The movie starts sadly with the tragic death of a sheriff who is also a husband and father. Sally Fields is his widow, Edna, who is left to deal with an almost Biblical plague of difficulties and setbacks. Fields' acting is great as she transforms from a woman who did not even know her husband's salary to one who can negotiate a deal with an unscrupulous cotton gin owner. Danny Glover shows his acting skills as Mose a homeless drifter who miraculously comes to help her save her farm. And John Malkovich is amazing as the bitter blind man Mr. Will. The subplot about Edna's beauty shop owning sister and her unfaithful husband was not as compelling and did not quite seem to belong in the same movie.
The famous ending at the church during a communion service is very powerful no matter what the viewer's spiritual beliefs and leaves many in tears or with goosebumps.
One of the best American films of the eighties.......2007-04-04
With storytelling of Dickensian authority, brilliant casting matched with excellent performances including the work of the two children, this film remains a very strong candidate as one of the best American movies of the 1980's. The central story follows the story of two sisters in parallel - one loses her husband through an accident in the line of duty, the other (nearly) loses her husband through his infidelity. The widow overcomes her loss through faith in her ability to prevail, through ignoring the question of race - her husband was shot dead by a young black boy - and through love. Her sister forgives her unfaithful husband. The film does not ignore the cancer of racism in a country that professes to be "the land of the free", nor does it ignore the struggle those of the land face with the forces of nature - and banks. It is all of a whole and adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Brilliant but not flashy. It seems as real as the land it depicts.
Has a place in my heart!.......2007-03-13
This is a wonderful movie. As always, Sally Fields is just great in it.
It is a "Kleenex- Box" movie, so have a few handy, but has a wonderful ending.
FABULOUS.......2007-01-09
This is one of my favorite movies, it is a great story and one you can
watch with the whole family. A classic in my book.
I love this movie........2006-11-06
Thank you for being so prompt sending this movie. I have a tour company
and we had a trip out west for 12 days. I showed this movie on the motor
coach which was appropriate for the old west review. Everybody loved
it.
