Product Description

What is Calvinism? Does this teaching make man a robot and God the author of sin? What about free will? If the church accepts Calvinism wont evangelism be stifled, perhaps extinguished? How can we balance Gods sovereignty and mans responsibility? What are the differences between historic Calvinism and hyper-Calvinism? Why did men like Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon, Whitefield, Edwards and a host of evangelists deny the Arminian definition of free will and label it heresy? Why did the Roman Catholic Church condemn the Reformed teaching of predestination and election and embrace free will theology? And why do so many Protestants agree with Rome on this issue? Crammed full of vignettes, analogies and interviews from leading Biblical scholars, church Historians and pastors such as Dr. R.C. Sproul, Dr. D. James Kennedy, Dr. George Grant, Dr. Stephen Mansfield, Dr. Thomas Ascol, Dr. Thomas Nettles, Dr. Roger Schultz, Pastor Walt Chantry, Dr. Joe Morecraft, Dr. Ken Talbot, Pastor Walter Bowie and Dr. R.C. Sproul, Jr., this video will explain what the great Baptist preacher C.H. Spurgeon meant when he said to deny Calvinism is to deny the gospel of Jesus Christ. FREE 59 PAGE STUDY GUIDE WITH PURCHASE.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-03-26

I had to watch it three or four times to completely absorb it. But, it was well worth the time. I shared it with several friends, who all agreed whole heartedly. It was just outstanding, and I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about this counter intuitive - but clearly Biblical topic.

With regard to the one negative feedback that I read here on Amazon, I would only comment that there is - in fact - no inconsistency between what is written in the Epistle of James and Doctrine of Predestination. Simply stated, we are saved by Grace unto Good Works. In other words, one is not saved by good works (i.e., one does not "earn" salvation), yet it is still true that "a tree is known by it's fruit". In other words, true believers will clearly and necessarily have to bear good fruit in obedience to their Lord & Savior.

In Mathew 22:34-40, Jesus makes it clear that Good Works (e.g., "Love your neighbor as yourself"), comes second - after the Greatest Commandment
(i.e., "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."). Observing the Second Greatest Commandment without the first is ultimatly meaningless. But, if you do the first, then the second must follow. On the other hand, it is possible to do the second without the first - and that is crux of it.

Anyway, I thought it was a great DvD!

"You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. ...For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead." (James 2:24)

The theological debate has raged for millennia. The Bible does not offer an unequivocal answer--as James and Isaiah, on one hand, the Pauline writings on the other, attest. Augustine, Luther, and Calvin make excellent arguments against works righteousness, but this video deifies their arguments without debating them. It never fully explained to my satisfaction where the crossover occurs, as many modern American Christians embrace free will "choosing Christ" for their salvation rather than the idea that God predestined them to be saved. So they are Arminian. But they see faith, not good works, as the way to salvation, so they are Calvinist.

This is a proselytization video. It demonizes Arminianism as a doorway to the "cancer" of liberalism. This cancerous legacy includes Charles Grandison Finney and the abolitionist movement of the 19th century. Arminianism grew in popularity with the American democratic experiment. Jefferson molded his ideas of checks and balances on Locke's Two Treatises of Government, not Calvinism (as this film contends). This video proclaims that Arminians see the state as their salvation without ever giving any concrete examples as to what Arminian actually believes this. One commentator even contends that the the "republican-style" Calvinism allows for a balance of power, while the "democratic system" of Arminianism leads to chaos and tyrrany. (In fact, Calvin in his own time was accused of tyrranical theocratic rule, torturing and beheading critics.) It is one thing to have a point of view, another to go out of your way to twist beautiful philosophical ideas into a political platform.

Calvin provided insight into Biblical interpretation that still reverberates, but I didn't get as detailed and in-depth understanding as I wanted. The DVD spent too much energy arguing for Calvinism over Arminianism (aka Conservatism over Liberalism...even though I know Christians who would call themselves Arminian conservatives and others, Calvinist liberals). And I didn't feel it gave a detailed, honest account of Arminianism's history. Then it concluded with a fundamentalist exclamation point, decrying the perversion of modern times.

If you are looking for a biography of Calvin, a sophisticated parsing of his theology, or a comparison/contrast of the history of the debate on grace, this is not the film for you. If you are looking for fodder for another hackneyed fundamentalist diatribe against relativism, humanism, modernism, liberalism, gay marriage and abortion, then this is film for you.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing .......2006-05-11

I watched this three time already in the last month. First, it goes into the history of Calvinism. It answers the most common objections toward Calvinism. It list a number of great preachers and Christians who made a great diffence in our world from the past to present. Preachers and scholars that made a impact were Calvinist in their theology. It also talks about how this impacts evanglism and why we should use the ten commandments in doing so. It goes into scriptural defense of Calvinism and the alot of other things.
The first disc is about 3 hours long, and the second is about hour.

Great DVD and I hope all that want to know about Calvinism would watch this amazing presentation.

5 out of 5 stars A possible classic?.......2006-04-11

The reputation AMAZING GRACE has gotten over the years is very well founded. A documentary this long on this subject matter seems destined to be boring. But AMAZING GRACE is as captivating as any book ever written on the topic of reformed theology. Check it out! You will become so well equipped to compassionately dialogue with any Arminian, and to lead your whole congregation in doing the same. The sovereignty of almighty God is wonderfully extolled by this documentary.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Documentary.......2006-02-15

I've been a Christian for close to 20 years...all of which time I was Arminian. I shunned the concept of Calvinism because it seemed altogether unjust & perposterous. The Bible is full of countless referrals to 'God's Elect'...this was supposedly God talking about people whom he saw down into the future as accepting His offer of salvation. This documentary exposes this nonsensical myth in the plainest most logical terms possible. The scriptural support for the doctrines of grace are utterly irrefutable & to watch this presentation one cannot help but feel foolish for believing Arminianism & the shaky, weak foundation that 'Free Will' is based on. I am reading Luther's 'Bondage of the Will', a marvellous additon to the Amazing Grace presentation..as well as books by Jonathon Edwards, BB Warfield & Charles Spurgeon on the subject. What most struck me about this presentation was how crystal clear the bible became after realizing Calvin didn't invent anything ..he just penned in his own words...what was already in the bible...it was not an idea he just came up with to refute the Arminians... Augustine the great theologian believed in election long before Calvin was ever born...& it's evident to me now ..that Paul the Apostle most definitely knew his salvation was God's choice...and nothing of his own self. If you plan to buy this...& you're Arminian...as I was...watch it with an open heart & mind...& set aside the natural reaction of "that isn't fair"...without setting that mindset aside..one cannot embrace the Just & Merciful God of the Bible.

It's been some time since I watched this, but I remember it as a good experience. It tells the frustrating relationship between a somewhat aimless young gay guy and a depressed HIV+ older one who just came back from New York and is now his neighbour. Also we see the young guy's tense relations with his family.
The dvd image is fullscreen, soft but nice. The movie seems to be shot with those filters that give some aura to things, especially where light hits directly. The subtitles are not optional.

I have heard of Moms Mabley but never got a chance to see her comedy until I watched Amazing Grace. The DVD was excellent and Moms Mabley comedy was off the hook. I strongly recommend the DVD

4 out of 5 stars I Love It!.......2004-11-24

I saw this movie on cable a while back and I just laughed myself to the ground. Let me explain this movie; A older lady(Ms Moms Mabley herself, who was a gem and is gone now, but if u was around back in the day, u know what I mean); just happens to live next door to this shady politician(Moses Gunn), who if elected, will take the money slated for that area and use for his own "uses". Somehow, Moms has this fella(Slappy White) who helps her out in her shenanigans by putting up elaborate spy systems so they can hear the politician's business. After his high faluting wife(Rosalind Cash, who was as much a gem and gone too)puts on airs with Moms and some of the neighborhood women, Moms give her something to cry for and she and her husband in time, see the light to turn things around. Folks, this is one good movie; a bit disjointed at times, but you can catch the message just the same; Look for bit parts by Debbie Morgan and some others who are prominent now.

5 out of 5 stars A hidden treasure!.......2003-09-09

This movie is a true hidden gem. The footage justs takes you back and makes you feel as if you were back in '75. Definate feel good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2003-07-04

Fantastic! What a wonderful movie, blending the old south with the movement of the times. It influenced me to buy it and add it to my collection of American movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Swan Song of Moms Mabley.......2003-05-28

Lovers of the legendary Black commedienne Moms Mabley will treasure this film. In a way, it's about everything she stood for. She moves to Baltimore and gets involved when crooked politicans use a confused Black man (Moses Gunn) and his alcoholic wife (Rosiland Cash) as puppets in a phony race. Seventy-plus year old Moms steps in this mess and does her best to straighten things out! I dare anyone who remembers Moms to keep a dry eye when she gives her climactic speech to the students at Morgan State University (a real Black college in Baltimore). It's almost as if she were giving her own eulogy while still giving the students hope to fight for a better tomorrow (she had a heart attack during the filming and died shortly after it was released).

Admittedly, this is a very low-budget film with poor sound. But like I said, if you love Moms, you'll love this.

    Description

For more than 200 years these treasured hymns have touched the lives of millions, for they are the most compelling music the world has ever known. These beloved songs were a product of a special union between the Spirit of God and the human heart. They were forged in the real life crucibles of tragedy, pain, and overwhelming joy. "Amazing Grace" was written by John Newton 25 years after he abandoned his life as an African slave trader. "It is Well with My Soul" poured from the broken heart of Horatio Spafford after his four daughters were killed in a tragic shipwreck. Joseph Scriven penned "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" after his fiancee drowned the day before their wedding. "Silent Night" and "How Great Thou Art" evolved from poems written by an Austrian parish priest and a Swedish pastor in praise and thanksgiving to their Creator. They are hymns that will endure forever. Each hymn is performed by soloists and choirs; "Silent Night" features the Vienna Boys Choir.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Inspiring DVD.......2007-01-21

This precious dvd has lifted my spirits when they've been down. With great cinematography and sound, we can learn how the greatest hymns of the faith were sometimes born out of faith-testing trials and tragedies. This one is a real keeper. Makes an excellent gift for almost any occasion.

Every time I hear the Vienna Boys Choir sing it takes me back when I was a young boy who sang in a choir, but I don't think I was ever as good as these boys are/were. With every selection they sing, you know that they have practiced it to the point of perfection, and this album is no exception. I'm sure that anyone who enjoys the treble voice of a boy and who also enjoys the Vienna Boys Choir, will enjoy this album.

Dr. Schaeffer, who was one of the most influential Christian thinkers in the twentieth century, shows that secular humanism has displaced the Judeo-Christian consensus that once defined our nation's moral boundaries. Law, education, and medicine have all been reshaped for the worse as a consequence. America's dominant worldview changed, Schaeffer charges, when Christians weren't looking. "Where have the Bible-believing Christians been in the last 40 years?" asks Schaeffer. "Where have we been as we have changed to this other consensus and all the horrors and stupidity of the present moment have come down on our culture?" In this lecture, now on DVD, Schaeffer lists two reasons for evangelical indifference: a false concept of spirituality and fear. He calls on believers to stand against the tyranny and moral chaos that come when humanism reignsand warns that believers may, at some point, be forced to make the hard choice between obeying God or Caesar. A Christian Manifesto is a thought-provoking and bracing Christian analysis of American culture and the obligation Christians have to engage the culture with the claims of Christ.

Dr. Francis Schaeffer calls on the Church to let go of our counterfeit theory of spirituality as well as our fear to stand against the despotism and moral chaos that has resulted from the cultural shift away from the historic foundations of Judeo-Christian thought. The modern and post-modernist are leading our country and our children's children into the abyss of secular humanism and meaninglessness. This DVD is a thought-provoking and refreshing analysis of American culture.

        1 out of 5 stars Total Disappointment!.......2006-12-24

What a fascinating story this would be if this video actually told it! Instead, what the viewer gets is about five minutes of video about a guy the Lord seems to be punishing by making him do the AT--oh, and with said guy reciting verse by painful verse the words to the Amazing Grace hymn. Nothing about planning, training, people he met along the way, adaptions for the hike, feelings, how he teamed with his dog, Orient. Not even insights into Bill Irwin's spiritual experience along the way. This is a corny and amateurish production. And at just a few minutes long--about like a long music video--it felt like a rip-off, too.

        5 out of 5 stars A non-religious movie about freedom and courage.......2007-06-17

I went to see Amazing Grace with the teens of my church as a chaperon. I did not really know what to expect with the exception that I was told it was about the abolition of slavery in England. What a great story for all to learn that it was the Anglos in England who were amongst the first to abolish slavery. It is not a story we hear much about. Wilberforce got religion as they say. His mentor, John Newton, who wrote the hymn 'Amazing Grace,' taught him about what slavery was. In the theatrical version of the story, Wilberforce wanted to go into the ministry. Newton suggests to him his calling is to free the slaves, to make that his life's work.

Oh that we had such passion for the things of this life today. I liked it becaused it showed about the potential in man to accomplish great things if he has a heart. I am a believer in God, yet, not a religionist. Religion, sometimes, causes more difficulty because it is so much like men and not like the God that it is attached to. Wilberforce lived his religion. Who knows though, maybe he was an enlightened soul, who really was against the crown, or maybe he really saw the commonalities between himself and the Jacobites in France. He was able to hold forth in his battle in the Parliament.

It is a story like no other in recent times. I hope that more come to see it, that it gets its time in the media. We never really heard much about it. It is a story for everyone. Historical, with a strong ethic for the love of mankind. Wilberforce and his story will inspire people to stand for what they believe. In the times we live in today, it is rare for people to stand up for what is right. Wilberforce is an example of almost unwavering commitment to a cause.

The world was better for his efforts, I think you will be better for seeing, Amazing Grace. I am getting the DVD.
