Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Slap Shot.......2007-07-04

This wildly profane film is consistently funny, and often side-splitting. And Newman's Reggie adds an element of poignancy; he's a perennial rogue with plenty of charm, but hardly a responsible adult, evidenced by his failed marriage to Francine (Jennifer Warren), for whom he still carries a torch. Veteran character actor Strother Martin makes the perfect weasel as smarmy team manager Joe McGrath, and Andrew Duncan is memorable as a radio announcer with the worst toupee on the planet.

Crude in parts, but hilarious bush league hockey! Many "laugh out loud" sceens sure to amuse fans of "ole time hockey." The Hanson brothers add great Canadian humor.

Cue the Henry Mancini music and watch out for Cato--the gist of the Pink Panther series has been gathered in a six-disc boxed set. At the center of it is Peter Sellers's incarnation of inspector Jacques Clouseau, a hopelessly bumbling detective with a genius for resting his hands in the wrong place (on the surface of a spinning globe, for instance) and mangling the English language.

Writer-director Blake Edwards cast Peter Ustinov as Clouseau in The Pink Panther, but Ustinov dropped out just before shooting began. Edwards (who recounts this story in a spotty commentary track included here) and Sellers bonded over their affection for Laurel and Hardy, and immediately transformed the character of Clouseau into a walking sight gag. The first film has a delicious swinging sixties vibe, while jewel thief David Niven, Claudia Cardinale, and Capucine occupy as much screen time as Sellers. Sellers really hits his stride in A Shot in the Dark, an elegantly funny tale of Clouseau sleuthing out a murder investigation. This one introduced Herbert Lom, as the increasingly frazzled Inspector Dreyfus, and Burt Kwouk, as Clouseau's houseboy-nemesis Cato. Sellers and Edwards, whose relationship was stormy, put Clouseau aside for over 10 years, until a trilogy of mid-1970s comedies restored the character to commercial (and dare we say cultural) primacy.

Unfortunately, the very funny comeback picture, Return of the Pink Panther, is absent from this set due to rights issues with the studios involved. The Pink Panther Strikes Again has Dreyfus going bananas and targeting Clouseau; Revenge of the Pink Panther puts Clouseau in a hilarious series of disguises, climaxing in a wonderfully mounted sequence in Hong Kong. (Throughout the series, the calm, classical staging of gags by Blake Edwards reminds you of what a lost art this has become.) Trail of the Pink Panther looks better now than it did when originally released in 1982, shortly after Sellers's death; it's a batch of unused Sellers routines from previous pictures, strung together with a loose plot. In other words, it's a "deleted scenes" extra, and quite funny at times.

Subsequent efforts Curse of the Pink Panther and Son of the Pink Panther are neither included nor mentioned. A half-hour documentary gives pleasant memories from Edwards, but feels incomplete. The cartoon Panther gets his own 11-minute mini-doc, plus six cartoon shorts including the Oscar-winning "The Pink Phink." --Robert Horton

Just 4 stars. The missing one is for the missing "The Return of the Pink Panther (1974)". If you are looking for extreme and healthy fun, no one could it be better than Sellers to pop ups your laughings, he was great doing any role. This is a delicious collection, just improve the one buying the missing "..return", and of course..."The Party"

It is absolutely first class entertainment. It is intelligent, witty, silly, "classy" - something we rarely achieve these days. Gather your family and give them an education in how to develop a keen sense of humor or, even better, invite your friends to watch - don't forget the martinis.

My dad was always talking about how he wanted this boxed set on DVD since he found out it existed. Christmas rolled around and he hadn't mentioned it in a while, so I surprised him with it and he was thrilled. The set is very nicely packaged, very high quality, and looks very nice. Also, my dad was pleased to see a couple of the lesser known movies (he said two are very common on TV but the others you hardly ever see). He's very happy with it, and I am very happy with my purchase. Well worth the money!

Fun to watch and relive these fine films on a nice wide-screen plasma TV. It will take you back to a more innocent age. Hard to watch if you are using a 27" tube set however.

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." That's more than the code of a newspaperman in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance; it's practically the operating credo of director John Ford, the most honored of American filmmakers. In this late film from a long career, Ford looks at the civilizing of an Old West town, Shinbone, through the sad memories of settlers looking back. In the town's wide-open youth, two-fisted Westerner John Wayne and tenderfoot newcomer James Stewart clash over a woman (Vera Miles) but ultimately unite against the notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Ford's nostalgia for the past is tempered by his stark approach, unusual for the visual poet of Stagecoach and The Searchers. The two heavyweights, Wayne and Stewart, are good together, with Wayne the embodiment of rugged individualism and Stewart the idealistic prophet of the civilization that will eventually tame the Wild West. This may be the saddest Western ever made, closer to an elegy than an action movie, and as cleanly beautiful as its central symbol, the cactus rose. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars the man who shot liberty valance.......2007-06-27

The first time I saw "The Man who shot Liberty Valance" was on TCM.I was amazed at the casting of this fine old western and decided to buy it for my library of old movies. I was not disappointed. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, along with Lee Marvin made this far better western than most movies were in it's day! It is fun to see all of these actors in their prime, doing what they do best! Thumbs up!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Western Ever!!.......2007-04-23

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart come together to lead one of the most dynamic casts of characters ever put into a western movie.

Who really shot Liberty Valance?

In a story that speaks to true inner strength and humility, the question is answered after the strangest turn of circumstances sees Jimmy Stewart (Ransom Stoddard) rise from humble (almost cowardly) beginnings to become a very well-respected man of the community. It's only later in life that he learns he's made his name on the actions of John Wayne's character...

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but one thing you learn in this movie is that things are not what they first seem. And that makes the movie WAY ahead of its time!

I am stoked to see it available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend".......2007-03-16

The combination of John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin along with Vera Miles and a plethora of talented supporting actors from the John Ford stable make this one of the best westerns. Character development is what makes this film so wonderful. The premise is simple: a man builds his entire life on a legend. Told in flashback, Mr. Stewart's character, Ransom Stoddard, sets the story straight regarding the pivotal moment of his life that paved the way for future achievements. Yet, he fails to recognize that his greatest achievement was not in literally doing the things, but in the courage demonstrated in a time of crisis. "Murder, pure and simple; but I can live with it. Hallie wanted you alive. You taught her to read; now go back in there and give her something to read about." And so he does.

John Wayne plays the "noble cowboy" and shy suitor with his usual easy-going charm. Lee Marvin plays the villain, Liberty Valance, with particular passion, serving a worthy stereotype of the sadistic gunslinger. Vera Miles does a nice turn as the romantic interest for Wayne and Stewart's characters. Supporting cast members Woody Strode, Andy Devine, Edmund O'Brien, Strother Martin are all at of the "Old West Central Casting Department." Together, they make the movie entertaining and special on a variety of levels: action-western, romance, lost love, to name but a few.

The DVD quality is quite good. Although some have bemoaned the lack of DVD "extras," for the price, the DVD offers good value. These kinds of movies are rare today and should be appreciated for the pure joy of filmmaking craftsmanship.

5 out of 5 stars John Wayne at his best!.......2007-03-09

This is a CLASSIC John Wayne movie! I strongly encourage any Duke fans to own this movie. He has often been criticized for his lack of acting ability, but this performance holds up very well next to James Stewart. This is truly a multi-faceted character. Red River and The Searchers are often acknowledged as his best. This one needs to be included in that discussion.

3 out of 5 stars It's Pendelton's in a sippy-cup........2007-02-03

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is a resonating acheivement in film. That, however, is not a new statement but I unlike others will ground it.
This most complex work, of John Ford's, is a compilation of talents. The quality, though, that holds it highly above the rest is its successful deconstructive nature. The Western's various elements are herein taken apart, examined, and then honed to as realistic a nature as possible. Then, they are put back together as they now are, except. . . except for one thing, now, they don't fit anymore. Do they? The righteous sigil of the law can't bring himself to end another's life (our films today ALWAYS justify the hero's killings with self defence, as if it was so simple as that). The Deus Ex Machina of the film John Wayne feels more like the villain than the hero. But, despite these sudden disparities with what we've seen on the screen before the film carries a successful and fluid narrative . So by that, the film acheives the deconstruction genre in its fullest form. Once the pieces are identified and shaped to perfect points they are amazingly, not just put back together but formed into a cohesive whole. That final step is the cruelest and breaks the majority of would be genre studies. It requires displacement of people, places, emotions, and actions. The man that was one is now two. The idea that was once impure and illogical is now entirely possible because it is now in the realm of the real human mind. The film is so exraordinary because it succeeds where so many others fail. To deconstruct a genre it is not merely enogh to have "The Antihero", darkness, or violence. Deconstruction is a difficult progression of story that requires a great understanding of story elements and their conventional use. It is a testament to this film that it is one of the few successes of its kind.

Now, the ephimeral.

This review is for a dvd not just the movie. The film gets five stars the dvd gets one (zero if I could) and those average to three. Suffice it to say that the lack of features, the packaging, and the John Wayne Collection moniker at the top of the box are all insults to this film. There are no notable features of any kind for a film which should be in a four-disk set to rival that of Gone with the Wind. The packaging is your standard keepcase which, I suppose, is acceptable. Lastly, I have no problem with John Wayne but putting that garrish moniker on this film would be simillar to printing "The Toshiro Mifune Collection" at the top of a Seven Samurai dvd. No, as much as I'd do "anything for the man who shot Liberty Valance" I will continue to rent the old VHS copy my local video store has yet to ruin and replace with some trite trash like "The Dukes of Hazard" Unrated. No thankyou, I'll wait for the film to be released in a five disk set, GwtW + 1.

With his trademark happy hair and spirited band comes Dan Zanes in his first-ever DVD, a concert/video collection of sing along melodies blending rock, folk, and global rhythms into a homespun musical menagerie. Formerly with the Del Fuegos band and riding on the success of seven CDs, Zanes presents All Around the Kitchen! featuring nine musical selections performed live in concert at New York's Knitting Factory. Whether familiar songs such as "Hokey Pokey" and "Polly Wolly Doodle," or lesser known numbers like "Malti," Zanes takes traditional music, winsomely turns it on its head, and adds such diverse instruments as accordion, banjo, upright bass, mandolin, and ukulele. On the program's alternative track, viewers can choose among a half dozen music videos pulsating with kids, street scenes, dancing, singing, and jubilant acoustics. There is "House Party Time," "All Around the Kitchen," and "Hello" as seen on Noggin, as well as "Jump Up" and "Go Down Emmanuel Road" performed on Sesame Street. Zanes' soulful musicians, contagious enthusiasm, and all-inclusive approach to music make this a song-and-dance fest where everyone finds a voice. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson

The concert and videos are not visually appealing for the young ones. The image quality and footage of concert is a VERY small step above amateur. If your child is a fan of the colorful Dan Zanes videos on TV, this video is not the same.

5 out of 5 stars The Long Shot.......2007-03-24

I am a 13 year old girl who loves horses. I thought this movie showed the true statement never give up. For all of the hard, terrible, and deppressing times the owne never gives up her love of horses dreans, and strengths even though they were over powered by weakness. There is true connection and love in this movie and it tells all girls that in the long run they can always have a happy ending.

3 out of 5 stars Mild Language.......2007-03-16

LIke other movies, was a good story but still had mild language. It wouldn't be what I considered a good "family movie".

    Description

Legendary producer-director Howard Hawks teams with two equally legendary stars, John Wayne and Robert Mitchum, in this classic Western drama. Mitchum plays to perfection an alcoholic but gutsy sheriff who relentlessly battles the dark side of the wild West, ruthless cattle barons and crooked "businessmen." The Duke gives an equally adept performance as the sheriff's old friend who knows his way around a gunfight. Filled with brawling action and humor, El Dorado delivers the goods. James Caan and Ed Asner co-star. Ranking with Stagecoach as one of the greatest of its genre, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the modern-day Western to beat all Westerns. John Ford, whose very name is synonymous with "Westerns," directed the ideal cast. Jimmy Stewart plays the bungling but charming big-city lawyer determined to rid the fair village of Shinbone of its number one nuisance and Bad Man: Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). And as if all that weren't enough, the biggest star that ever aimed a six-shooter plays the Man of the title: John Wayne. Super-sincere Stewart and rugged rancher Wayne also share the same love interest (Vera Miles). One gets the gunman but the other gets the gal. Afflicted with a terminal illness, John Bernard Brooks (John Wayne), the last of the legendary gunfighters, quietly returns to Carson City for medical attention from his old friend Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart). Aware that his days are numbered, the troubled man seeks solace and peace in a boarding house run by a widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard). However, it is not Brook's fate to die in peace, as he becomes embroiled in one last valiant battle. Katie Elder bore four sons. The day she is buried they all return home to Clearwater, Texas, to pay their last respects. John Wayne is the eldest and toughest son, the gunslinger. Tom (Dean Martin) is good with a deck of cards and good with a gun when he has to be. Matt (Earl Holliman) is the quiet one - nobody ever called him yellow...twice. Bud (Michael Anderson, Jr.) is the youngest. Any hope for respectability lies with him. Directed by Henry Hathaway (True Grit), an acknowledged master of the Western, the story has a dual theme: not only is this a he-man's story, but it is also a drama of the maternal influence of Katie Elder, movingly portrayed from beginning to conclusion. In 1970, John Wayne won an Academy Award. for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when an inexperienced but enthusiastic Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.

William Wyler and Bette Davis made their third and final collaboration their finest with this striking 1941 adaptation of Lillian Hellman's acidic play. The titular foxes are a particularly ravenous turn-of-the-century Southern moneyed clan, the Hubbards, and the most cunning of them all is sister Regina Giddens, the brilliant but ruthless woman played by Davis. In contrast to the manipulative Regina and her scheming brothers (Charles Dingle and Carl Benton Reid) is her guileless sister-in-law Birdie (Patricia Collinge in a delicately flighty performance) and her sickly, humanistic husband Horace (Herbert Marshall), whom she tolerates only for his money and position--until he stands in the way of a scheme that could bring her a fortune. Teresa Wright is the hope of the next generation as Regina's thoughtful daughter, Alexandra, who stands in marked contrast to her graceless, greedy cousin Leo (Dan Duryea). Wyler's longtime cameraman, Gregg Toland, fresh from his groundbreaking work on Citizen Kane, fills the film with amazing deep-focus compositions and razor-sharp images, showing off the grandly handsome mansion set in all its old-world splendor. But for all its beauty Wyler reveals it as a cold, lonely world ruled by a heartless woman. Excellent performances by all make Hellman's sharp dialogue glint like the edge of a knife, which ultimately cuts deep into the soul of this powerful classic. --Sean Axmaker

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Little Foxes.......2007-06-25

Adapted from Lillian Hellman's Broadway smash, the third and final collaboration between William Wyler and leading lady Bette Davis, again playing a viper in petticoats, is a poisonous, effective drama set in the turn-of-the-century South. Davis was never so wicked, playing Regina to the icy hilt. A fabulous cast and authentic 1900s detail bring Hellman's loathsome characters to vivid life. Is this what they mean by Southern hospitality?

    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-11-03

What is there to say? The film is brilliant, soaring above merely perfect Holywood to come as close as one can to the great American tragedy. Superb performances by everyone. Why spoil it for you with details; just watch it and be overwhelmed.

3 out of 5 stars The Little Foxes.......2006-08-16

This was probably one of the few of Davis' movies that seemed to lead to a suspensful climax and then plopped to a disappointment and left one hanging waiting for an end and a conclusion that never came. When it said "The End", I couldn't believe it. Though it has been hailed on Broadway as a great play by Lillian Hellman, the ending was so abrupt that one has to wonder what the brothers did as retribution for the "blackmail" their sister was holding over their heads. It seemed like an unfinished plot. One assumes the mother and daughter's relationship has ended but one isn't sure and that could have been explored further. Davis gave her usual wonderful performance, as did the other actors, but I expected perhaps better writing of Hellman since the accolades for the book were so great. I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another Bumpy Ride for Bette.......2006-07-19

Bette Davis is in fine form in one of her strongest roles. With a strong ensemble cast, "Tne Little Foxes" keeps the viewer on the edge of their chair, with a wonderful script by Lillian Hellman.

This is truely a classic Bette Davis vehicle that I can watch over and over again, because of the vicious Regina she creates.

If you think "All About Eve' was a bumpy ride, you haven't seen anything yet until you see "The Little Foxes."

5 out of 5 stars The Hollywood Golden Age summit.......2006-06-15

On its surface Lillian Hellman's play THE LITTLE FOXES (1941) seems to be about a wealthy family destroyed by greed in the Deep South of 1900. Matriarch Regina Giddens (Bette Davis at her icy best) presides over a family with a crippled husband (Herbert Marshall) and assorted morally weak and greedy relatives. Repeating their stage roles are Patricia Collinge, Dan Duryea, Charles Dingle, Carl Benton Reid, and John Marriott, according to Leonard Maltin. Making their film debuts are Collinge, Duryea, Reid, and Teresa Wright. Fans of movie trivia should remember that Collinge and Wright played mother and daughter in Hitchcock's SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1942). Collinge plays the weak Birdie here, while Wright is the hope for the future as Regina's daughter. It has a bitter and bitchy family at odds with one another. There is a cotton mill the family owns in town. Since it is prosperous, there are fights over ownership of it. And when a lot of bonds are taken from a safety deposit box in the town bank by family members, Regina wants them returned--or else the equivalent amount of money given to her in cash. As for husband Marshall, Regina stays with him for his money. This is gripping and superbly played drama. It is a complicated family drama, and I hope any errors on my part in terms of relationships are not serious and can be ignored.

Actually, THE LITTLE FOXES seems to me to not be about plot at all, but rather is an exercise in Hollywood Golden Age style. It is fabulously crafted by some of the greatest talents the movies have ever seen---producer Samuel Goldwyn, director William Wyler, writer Hellman, and star Davis in one of her greatest roles. Gregg Toland did the elegant deep-focus B&W photography (such beautiful antique lamps!) the same year he shot CITIZEN KANE. Art director Stephen Goosson won an Oscar for Capra's LOST HORIZON (1937). Costume designer Orry-Kelly won an Oscar for Wilder's SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), with considerable credits in between. Editor Daniel Mandell won an Oscar for THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946). The background score is by THE MUSIC MAN's Meredith Willson. And the cast is world-class, if not household names. This is such an exquisite movie to look at visually, to study the period re-creation carriages and wallpaper, to marvel at the old-fashioned vested suits, to listen to Hellman's dialogue. And moments of silence. Watch the chilling scene where Regina's foreground face is frozen in a chair while crippled husband Marshall tries to climb a blurry background staircase to get some medicine.

So THE LITTLE FOXES is a feast of a drama for discriminating audiences, and Bette Davis admirers in particular. Samuel Goldwyn also deserves a lot of credit. He didn't produce a lot of movies during the 1930's and 1940's, but each one seems hand-crafted and outstanding now, including THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES (1942) and THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946). William Wyler had previously worked with Davis on JEZEBEL (1938) and THE LETTER (1940); Davis won an Oscar for the former and a nomination for the latter. And Wyler directed Teresa Wright to an Oscar the following year, 1942, with Best Picture Oscar winner MRS. MINIVER. And Hellman's dialogue is cutting sharp and her characters treacherous. THE LITTLE FOXES is an extraordinary movie made by truly extraordinary talents on both sides of the camera. It is really a must-see and may even be a masterpiece, if it catches you in the right mood.

I bought the aquarium video for mom's birthday so they would have something "cool" to play during the warm summer when they have company for dinner.

These are closeups of fish tanks. They loop and have relaxing water sounds or music if you choose. Great for turning your widescreen TV into an aquarium. Gotta warn you though, your kids will make you watch the lobster one over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Just a waterful thing to look at...............2007-04-02

I love the saltwater life activity. Not crazy about the music. Some of the music sounds more like something you would hear at a "Chicken and Fritter" joint.

From watching the Bouns clip of the ocean waves, that will be my next purchase.

...They look real, but they're not! :) Really great photography shot in Hi-Def. We also have the Ambient Fireplace DVD and I like it better than this one, but this is great, too! I had to put it on music instead of water sounds, because all the gurgling of the water made the household want to run to the restroom constantly! *seriously* The beauty of the underwater scenes are worth the price for the DVD, and is great piece of artwork to display in the room, instead of a dark, blank TV screen.
