Amazon.com essential video

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of the new three-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there. That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast.

The 1999 disc also included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. The third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. They are four silent films: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1910, 13 min.), "The Magic Cloak of Oz" (1914, 38 min.), His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914, 59 min., written and directed by Baum himself), The Wizard of Oz (1925, 72 min., Larry Semon). The fifth treatment is Ted Eshbaum's 1933 Technicolor cartoon short which has songs and sound, and is the first depiction of Kansas in black and white and Oz in color. The third disc also has a 38-minute biography of L. Frank Baum, and collector's-edition supplements include a gorgeous set of photo cards among other materials. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-21

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made.......2007-06-18

The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made, staring the world's best performer; Judy Garland!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier.......2007-06-18

My DVD arrived on-time, and it is in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

5 out of 5 stars There's no place like Oz, There's no place like Oz..................2007-06-11

Growing up in the 60's and early 70's my small town had access to three television channels - and two of them carried shows from the same network! The annual showing of THE WIZARD OF OZ in those pre video days was an eagerly anticipated event for kids that was discussed for days before and after even by jaded fifth and sixth graders. I recently watched the film again with my own child and was amazed by how well the story and the whole production holds up. The film has much to offer still in terms of memorable songs and characters and it is so fun to find the humdrum citizens of Dust Bowl Kansas having fantasy counterparts in surreal OZ. No wonder this movie is and will remain a film legend.

Iam not at all happy that i could not watch this product the three fugitives and 83 hours til dawn and am unable to buy this product in Australia. I think it suck that dvds have region departments and can only be watched in some countries People should be able to buy a product and be able to watch it. 5 out of 5 stars I really liked it!!!.......2007-02-05

This is underhanded meets underhanded. This movie has alot of twists and turns to it and the plot is solid. BTW, Dominic Purcell is a god. This guy is drop dead georgous and deserves to be watched in any movie that he is in. He spends alot of the movie without a shirt showing his nicely built chest. In this movie he plays a very innocent but underhanded guy that is very decieved by everyone in his life. When you watch this movie, you think that it is a "run of the mill" kidnapper movie. At the end, you are thinking..."wow...I thought I knew what this movie was about but I really didn't." See this movie, you won't be disappointed. I hightly recommend it to anyone that is a Dominic Purcell fan and likes movies with alot of twists and turns.

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2006-10-30

I've seen the movie twice, both time on Showtime. I thought it was pretty good. I've loved Dominic Purcell since John Doe, even though the show didn't last. He's a great actor, and in this movie he has a weird kind of innocence, or a slight naivete about his charater that makes him that much more appealing. It doesn't hurt that he's freaking gorgeous, he also has a bit of a sense of humor in this movie, and I like that, too. His and Joy Bryant's characters have an intereting relationship, and you can really tell that the two characters have great love for each other. I'm a big fan of romances and I may be biased but the romantic aspect really pulled me into this movie. Even the kidnappers were interesting, though they were somewhat dumb, and I guess that was kind of the point. Overall I liked the movie and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Dominic Purcell, Joy Bryant, Ali Larter, or any of the other main characters in this movie. They all did well and the movie was good. I don't know why people are giving it such a bad review. But I tend to like most movies that critics don't, so hey I loved it and that's the only opinion that matters to me.

5 out of 5 stars 3-Way.......2006-05-31

Why people hate this movie so much, I will probably never figure out...But, really, it's pretty damn good. I'm a big "Prison Break" fan and this movie caught my attention because Dominic Purcell is on the cover and I decided to see what he's played outside of "PB". Turns out, he's virtually playing the same character pre-Prison, except you won't find Michael Scofield anywhere here. The movie is based on an old book that I've never read, so this review is based solely on the film and is not compared to anything. First of all, the title isn't referring to sex...It's referring to the deceit in the film that seems to go three ways (or more). Just to get that out there, anyways Purcell plays
Lew; After his wife leaves him for another man, Lew decides to kill her onboard her boat. He (apparently) decides not to and we flash forward to 8 months later. At this point, Lew is dating a girl named Rita (Joy Bryant, London) and works at making signs for various businesses. One night, he sees a car in a darkened area next to the highway...Out of curiosity, Lew investigates and overhears a conversation between Ralph (Desmond Harrington) and Isobel (Ali Larter, Final Destination). Ralph is planning on kidnapping his wife Florence (Gina Gershon), getting the reward money from her mother, killing Florence, and then spending time with Isobel. The ransom is one million dollars. As Lew investigates further and decides that he'll cut himself in things are looking good...And then things get complicated. A guy named Herbert Clarkson (Dwight Yoakam), the brother of Lew's ex-wifes lover shows up with Lew's gun (he left it at the boat) and demands that Lew show him where the body of his brother is. The movie takes a few twists & turns, which are pretty much simalar to "Wild Things" minus any lesbian pool kissing, and turns out to be a pretty entertaining and upredictable film. Everytime I thought I had it figured out, I didn't. Don't get me wrong, it's not a masterpiece and I should've seen the twists coming but every character in this film decieves or is decieved and at some point, even the audience is decieved. This movie deserves more credit than people place upon it and let's face it...Ali Larter is kind of hot. The cast is solid, the movie's entertaining in the same way "Wild Things" & "Cruel Intentions" was. It might not be Oscar worthy, but it's still worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Strong acting, but...lacking.......2006-05-15

It's about 3 parties of people with agendas screwing each other over. There's a very Gratuitous Sex Scene, a kidnapping, a psycho, etc... but somehow it fails to gel. It's really not bad, it's just.... not good either. It tries very, very hard to be True Romance (with a smarter, tougher girl) but misses.

It's sort of sweet, but also sort of obvious. And I HATE the lame title.

Upside? Joy Bryant acts her socks (and pretty much every thing else, in the aforementioned GSS) off - she's good. Dominic Purcel is as adorable as always. The two dumb kidnappers are excellent, the psycho is terrific, they're all pretty much brilliant. I wish I could put my finger on why this movie didn't do it for me. Oh well.

1 out of 5 stars I didn't like this movie, but you do get to see Purcell's nude butt!.......2005-10-01

I think this is the worst movie I have ever seen! And confusing too! The are a lot of bad flash backs, and fast-fast forward scenes of boats tied up in a dock, with the sun coming up or down.

Lew(Dominic Purcell) is laughable as a sign painter.
There is actually a scene where he is bent double hammering over his head on to a sign he's working on, that is down on the ground and half burried in the dusty dirt! You can tell he dosen't have a clue to what he is doing!

Then after he finds out about the planned kidnapping, he is supposly sneeking, and peeking around bushes. Like a man of Purcell's size(he's 6'1"or so, and wieghs about 200 pounds) can sneek around in someone's front yard and not be seen? Come on! I kept waiting for someone to call 911 to report a peeking Tom!

I have to warn you that there are a lot of sex scenes! Bad ones at that! I guess the director wanted to get them over with-real fast-to move on to the next badly written scene!

At least you get to see Dominic Purcells nude butt! Which maybe the only reason to see this movie, if you like that sort of thing!

And Purcell gets beaten up alot-by everyone in this movie. I kept thinking 'come on Purcell your a big guy, you can take that little guy!' And worse a woman beats him up too!

I saw this listed as a comedy, well maybe a comedy of errors!

While being intervied Dominic Purcell dosen't even mention this movie, when he lists all the movies that he has been-in.

And that should say something about this movie, if the guy who starred in it, would NOT even SAY he'd been in it!

      Description

"On Our Way Up" is an urban docudrama set in one of the roughest hoods in the United States, Atlanta's "Zone 6" (nicknamed "Little Vietnam"). Witness first-hand a world of drug deals, drive by shootings, assassinations, and abject poverty, and then see how they rise above it all. A true story, the subjects of the film (Anthony Clark, Emmanuel Clark, Brian Clark, and Charles Freeman) actually started their own studio (Three C Studios) and financed and co-produced the film. Ultimately they hope "On Our Way Up" can inspire other young African Americans to escape a life of drugs and killing, even when it seems like their only option.

"On Our Way Up" was shot completely in HD and features an amazing hip-hop soundtrack, with original music from "Profit" and many other talented Atlanta artists.

"On Our Way Up" was produced by Ben Buie and Directed by Ed Hill (with over 20 years of professional TV and film experience).
