Mel Gibson's film debut is a low-budget Australian beach movie with a heart of darkness (an alternate title is Coast of Terror). Set in the 1950s, the film follows the exploits of four youths on a holiday road trip that takes an ugly turn. The end product is a sort of Beach Blanket Bingo in hell. Panoramic Endless Summer-type shots of Mel and the boys hanging 10 and scenes of teens bopping at a rock & roll hop frame a plot involving statutory rape and murder. Gibson plays Scollop, the carefree, sweet one in the group. He's a genuine beach boy: blond and tan and obsessed with surfing. Sandy (John Jarratt), a dour fellow on a last fling before marriage, asks Scollop what he's going to be doing in 10 years' time. Scollop replies: "I'll be doing something in 10 years' time. So I guess in 10 years' time that's what I'll be doing." It's logic worthy of Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Scollop's twin in spirit. Gibson's ease in front of the camera and natural acting talent shine through even here. He brings his trademark breezy charm and a surprising emotional range to this beach bum role. It's no wonder that he went on to become an international superstar. --Laura Mirsky

Like Disney's animated Atlantis: The Lost Empire, its sequel, Milo's Return, is an Indiana Jones for the younger set. Bespectacled Milo Thatch (James Arnold Taylor taking over from Michael J. Fox) is back in this made-for-video release, helping to rebuild Atlantis alongside new sweetheart Queen Kida, but all is not so calm in the outside world. A giant octopus-like creature, the Kraken, is terrorizing a local village, so Milo, Kida, and the rest head out--Scoobie-style--to make things right. Once that problem has been solved, they're off to the Southwest to tame a passel of wild sand coyotes and then to Antarctica to battle a 100-foot ice monster. Milo's Return is a series of loosely linked adventures drawing on a variety of mythologies, including Native American and Norse, that doesn't always have much to do with the original movie, but is always lively and entertaining. (Ages 8 and older) --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

The fearless explorers from Disney's hit animated movie ATLANTIS: THE LOST EMPIRE are back. During his initial expedition, Milo Thatch and company located the famous underwater city and rescued the mysterious kingdom and all its people. Now Milo, Kida, and their crew gear up for more action. The team must leave Atlantis when trouble surfaces above water and they discover mystifying powers at work. From the dusty deserts of the Southwest to the icy heights of the Nordic mountains, the team's newest quest sets them against gigantic sea monsters, spectacular spirits, and powerful legends. In the midst of their excursion, Kida discovers the awesome power of her city's enchanted crystals and, ultimately, must decide whether it is wiser to hide the Heart of Atlantis or share its light with the rest of the world. Climb aboard and get ready to experience a world of "heartwarming fun for the entire family" (Sandie Newton, CBS).

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-16

Although this dvd was supposed to be in very good condition, it had a serious scratch that prevented my little boy from watching the whole movie. It's one of his favorites, so we're very disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Stop the killing!!!.......2007-02-20

Why can't disney stop making horrible sequels! I really liked the original, but this was totaly pointless. No wonder it wasen't made into a cartoon, it was horrible. For those of you who liked the first I have a message. Stay away, pretend this never happened, pretend you never even heard about this, just see the first.

1 out of 5 stars Not really a sequel..........2005-04-18

Atlantis: Milo's Return plays out more like three saturday morning cartoon episodes that they added interconnecting scenes to. It has the poor quality of the average saturday morning toons.

This is not really much of a sequel. They present three seperate, unrelated tales of misadventure that Milo and the gang have to go through. Sure, they are all related to artifacts that were created by the king of Atlantis, but that's about it.

Poorly conceived, blandly presented, and with an ALL NEW VOICE for Milo (they obviously couldn't get Michael J. Fox back for this due to the poor quality), the standard Disney trademark is on this when everything turns out perfectly peaceful in the end.

Kids might enjoy it, but Scooby Doo at its worst is more entertaining!

1 out of 5 stars TELL DISNEY TO STOP MAKING SEQUELS!.......2005-03-21

If there's a moral to be learned from all the sequels disney has made recently, its that if its not shown in theaters, dont see it!
i loved the first atlantis movie, but this one totally ruined if not killed the charm and thrill of the first movie. if i ddint know better, id say that Disney's animators are either on strike or have permanently run out of ideas. i have yet to see one disney sequel of an original film that doesnt suck.

3 out of 5 stars Three Tales Tied Loosely Together.......2005-02-27

Considering that this "movie" is actually a combination of three stories originally produced for an "Atlantis" cartoon that never came to fruition, I find it to be unfair to judge these adventures as one whole. Instead, I'll give a brief review of each of the three adventures and then summarize the entire movie.

First off, we have Milo, Kida and the gang tackling the mighty Kraken. No, it isn't the Kraken you may remember from "Clash Of The Titans," but a sea-dwelling demon who wreaks havoc in the seas and possesses a small village. The story is probably the best of the three. It is quickly paced and has pretty good development.

The second story is rather boring. It takes place in the American Southwest. A band of "dust coyote spirits" have attacked one of the locals who happens to have found some ancient pottery. Milo's team has to figure out why the "coyotes" are attacking the locals and put a stop to them. The ending of the tale is rather brilliant, but not enough to save this chapter of the entire film.

The final story nods its hat toward Norse mythology. It features a man wanting to destroy the current world and rule over a newer, better one. Of course, he can't do this as a mere mortal, so he uses a spear that is magically inclined and becomes "Odin." If you know anything about Norse mythology, you know that Odin is similar to Zeus, only he rules the cold north. Once again, Milo and his crew have to save the day.

So what ties all of these little adventures together? Atlantis, of course. Using a mythology that ties just about every culture together, we find through these three tales that Atlantis is the center of the cultural universe. In other words, all gods come from Atlantis, and their powers are all knowing and all caring when placed into the hands of the right individuals. It looks like Kida and Milo and his team are the folks intended to control all of this power.

These tales aren't as horrible as others have stated. They just have to be looked at as individual stories and I'm sure you'll get more enjoyment out of them. If you have young sons in your family, they'll probably get the most enjoyment out of this movie. Much like its predecessor, it relies on mythology and technology to move the story along. Those are two things that keep small children(8 and under)from getting to interested in this movie.

In all honesty, I'd rent this before buying it. If your kids enjoy it, then you may consider investing in it.

Love this movie!!! It is silly, touching, fun, funny. Just what i needed. And of course filled with hot guys!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best gay romance movies ever!.......2007-06-01

This movie really got to me. The plot summary doesn't tell you what the movies REALLY about. Bai isn't really a playboy, Bai has a phobia for relationships. In dire fear of having his heart broken he ends up only having one-night stands and which leads to everyone thinking he's a cold hearted playboy. When he meets and falls deeply in love with Tien he has to face his fears before he breaks Tien's heart and loses him. Don't worry its a happy ending! :)

Its so rare to find a good gay movie that isn't a total comedy or tragedy. I highly recommend this to anyone just looking for gay romance without the tragedy or dumb jokes. A++ ;)

4 out of 5 stars Teen Romance.......2007-03-26

"Formula 17"

Teen Romance

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

From Taiwan comes this delightful romantic comedy. Homosexuality is a taboo subject in Taiwan but "Formula 17" has a wonderful sensitivity and the treatment of the issue is wonderful.
Seventeen year old Tien (played by Tony Yang) moves to Taipei to live with Yu (Chin King), a friend who bartends at a gay bar. Tien, who knows nothing about sex, is a virgin and plans to stay that way until he finds true love. (How wonderfully idealistic). Yu is involved in a long distance relationship that is taking is toll on him and is determined to bring Tien into the Taipei gay scene and have him lost his virginity. Yu even arranges a liaison with a really hot plumber but Tien is attracted to a 30 year old businessman who is notorious for liking one nighters. Bai, the businessman and Tien eventually hook up but Bai avoids Tien the next day. Tein's friends go out looking for Bai to make their pal feel better and what results is a scene that is so madcap that it is hard to believe.
"Formula 17"is a very funny movie. It is simple and this is probably what makes it so delightful. There are no nudity nor sex scenes per se but even so, the Taiwanese government banned the movie in Singapore.
In some ways, the film is somewhat amateurish but the characters are well developed and I cold not help falling for some of them. The actors seriously persuaded their roles with relish and what could have been stereotypical becomes touching and sensitive. It is a satirical look at the way so many people live their lives and it ropes you in during the first few minutes and you find yourself enjoying every moment. There is a great deal of heart here and it deals with issues that the gay community has always faces--fidelity and honesty and friendship. "Formula 17" is one of those movies that you can sit back and just enjoy without thinking or attempting to unravel a plot with twists and turns. It is just a good time.

3 out of 5 stars Under the Superficial Fluff Lies a Sensitive Tale.......2006-04-10

'Shi qi sui de tian kong' (FORMULA 17) is a very fine first venture into film making by two young Taiwanese women - Yin-jung Chen, director and Rady Fu, screenwriter - who are unafraid to take on a taboo subject in Taiwan and find some excellent talent and ideas that suggest that there will be more films from them in the future. Though the central theme and two characters of the story are excellent, the movie drifts into wide-eyed burlesque with its supporting cast, and thus the three stars rating instead of four.

Tien (Tony Yang) is a naive seventeen-year-old from the provinces who comes to Taipei to live with his old friend Yu (Chin King), a bartender in a gay bar, for a summer. Tien is gay, a virgin, and intends to stay a virgin until he is in a meaningful love relationship. Yu is suffering from a relationship that is tainted by distance, but he sees the need to introduce Tien into the active gay life in Taipei - and to put an end to Tien's virginity. Together with Yu's friends (way over the top flamboyant kids) Tien is introduced to gay bars, is set up with hunks, but he holds to his values - until he eyes 30-year-old playboy Bai Tieh-nan (Duncan Lai), a lothario famous for his one night stands. We gradually learn that Bai is a sensitive hunk with issues who is afraid to fall in love, hence his one night stand rule. The story at the core of this film is how the two ultimately fulfill each others' ideals and needs.

Much of the film dawdles in stereotypical situations and poorly acted and directed excursions into the bar scenes, but the work of Duncan Lai and Tony Yang makes the film credible and well worth watching: both men are handsome, talented actors who develop a fine screen chemistry. For all its weak points, FORMULA 17 is a film with a big heart and a gay film that manages to deal with some important issues of fidelity and honesty instead of focusing on merely the superficial. In Mandarin, Cantonese, English with subtitles. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and whimsical film!.......2006-04-05

I really loved this movie. It graduated to taking a spot in my Top 5 Favorite Gay Films. It's sweet and comical, never mean-spirited and offers not only romance but a tale of true friendship as well. I really like how the narrative changed at times for dramatic effect. Plus the boys were all so damn cute!

I expected some kinda low budget type of flick but it was kick ass. This type of ish really happens. If you think this movie is a gansta fantasy, you ain't never been in the game. Mack 10 and Fat Joe are surprisingly good actors. Wish there was a part 2.

TWO GANG BANGERS [MACK 10 & FAT JOE] ARE IN RIVAL GANGS. BUT, THEY SOON BECOME BEST FRIENDS. DEFINITELY BETTER THAN MOST OF THE OTHER RECENTLY RELEASED GANGSTA MOVIES. FEATURES A LOT OF RAPPERS, SUCH AS; ICE CUBE, MC EIHT, B-REAL, CJ MAC, BAD AZZ, K MAC FROM THE COMRADZ, AND MANY MORE. IT HAS SOME PRETTY GOOD ACTION SCENES. IT WAS AN ALRIGHT MOVIE, DESPITE THE FACT THAT A LOT OF THESE RAPPERS CAN'T ACT. A PRETTY WORTHY ATTEMPT.

this movie is not bad at all it is good funny and dramatic i think its better than menace to socioty its not that voilent it focoses more on the story which i like although they could of swaped mack 10's role for ice cube's because ice cube is only in it for 10 minutes

... It's not only bad. It's annoyingly bad. Some bad movies make you laugh. This makes you want to throw your tv out the window. It's full of every hip hop cliche you can think of. And I like hip hop. It's just a gangsta video fantasy made into a feature film. A lot of rap artists are in it (ones I like too, like B-Real and MC Eiht). But it makes no attempt to be more than a genre film, and a bad one at that. You want to watch a good urban gangster style movie? Check out Fresh or Ghost Dog, or even Menace to Society. Those are artistic movies. Anyway, I'm just [upset] this one keeps popping up on my searches because I want the surf movie 'Thicker than Water', not this ...

1 out of 5 stars Dull city.......2003-12-21

The main selling point of this DVD is that it stars Mel Gibson. This has to be one of Gibson's very first films - even before the ROAD WARRIOR movies. The shot of Gibson that is on the cover is dated much later than the young, skinny actor who appears in this movie. Also, Gibson only has a supporting role in the film. To surmise that he's the leading actor would be incorrect.

Not a whole lot happens with the plot, so they seemingly stretch just about every scene out to make it "feature length." They also throw in a lot of scenes apparently at random without any thought to story cohesion.

Of course, the film is also about as low budget as low-budget movies get. I swear at times I thought I was watching a film made by a bunch of high schoolers. The picture quality is pretty rough - even by 1970s standards.

The only people who just might like to pick up this DVD are die-hard Gibson fans. There are those who might enjoy seeing him in a movie filmed in his native Australia where he still has his thick native accent. So, with that in mind, there are perhaps some who might find some nostalgia in buying this one.

If Gibson had not starred in this movie, I very much doubt it would have ever made it to DVD in the 1st place. This is an obscure movie, and clearly there is a REASON it's obscure: it's dull, bland & boring!

4 out of 5 stars The best debut I've ever seen.......2001-08-10

A very interesting movie and great acting for a debut film, if you can get past the very odd camera angles and ocasional dumb old joke this is a worth while great film Mel Gibson all the way

1 out of 5 stars 1973 filming.......2001-05-25

The plot of the story was, i admit, enticing and well thought out. However, the film quality is horrible. Mel Gibson himself stated that he wished the film never saw daylight. It's a cheap flick you can find in bargain bins for a buck fifty, i know, thats where i got mine. The only reason it's part of my collection is because im a die hard and dedicated mel fan...thats it. You can't get through the entire movie without turning it off...the sound is horrible, and the picture is very unclear. Very low grade flick.

5 out of 5 stars Tim.......2000-08-16

This was by far the best Mel Gibson performance I have ever seen. His depth and breadth of character was amazing. I have to admit I giggled through the first viewing(did we really dress like that in the 70's?) but I've seen it six times and read the book by Colleen McCullough. By the way, a 24 year old Mel in short shorts is a bonus!

Mel and Piper Laurie put forth great performances as a mildly retarded handyman and an emotionally retarded middle-aged spinster. Tim sees the world simply as made up of beautiful details, while Mary views it from afar inside her coccoon of solitude. Tim brings out emotion and caring in Mary that she had lived without her entire life, while she awakens intellectual freedom within him by teaching him to read and write. Their friendship begins quite platonically, and it is refreshing to experience innocent love and mutual respect rather than what we have put before us today on video. Their friendship develops and deepens as they spend more and more time together. Truly a sweet, sweet movie and a great performance by Mel who's Adonis-like looks are overwhelming.

Piper Laurie is great as Mary who evolves from a matriarchal frump into a loving, sharing woman all due to this person who puts no demands on her and loves and respects her simply for who she is. It will make you reminisce about your first kiss and all the innocence and inner discovery that led up to it.

I expected some kinda low budget type of flick but it was kick ass. This type of ish really happens. If you think this movie is a gansta fantasy, you ain't never been in the game. Mack 10 and Fat Joe are surprisingly good actors. Wish there was a part 2.

3 out of 5 stars THIS WAS SUPRISINGLY WATCHABLE.......2003-12-19

5 out of 5 stars must buy for fans of gangster movies.......2003-04-25

this movie is not bad at all it is good funny and dramatic i think its better than menace to socioty its not that voilent it focoses more on the story which i like although they could of swaped mack 10's role for ice cube's because ice cube is only in it for 10 minutes

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies I've ever seen.......2003-04-13
