The Last Wagon.......2007-05-13
An excellent western. One that you'll enjoy watching over and over again! Richard Widmark at this best.
Widmark's Best!.......2007-04-04
Being a great Widmark fan, this was always my favorite movie of his as a kid. Great acting by all, especially Mr. Widmark himself. and great on location scenery. The movie has a great feel to it and has you really getting into the characters.
I am looking forward to owning the DVD.
must have.......2007-01-21
This is a Western as it should be. In mine opinion, everyone who has a library of Western DVD's should have it; it is superb. A good story with no unnecessary shooting and nearly no unneccesary violance. The story is at all times suspensefull and the end is both satisfying and original. The actors are generally good (on a scale of 1-10 I would rate them 8).There are four exeptions who rate a 9 - Comance Tod, the youngest boy and his sister, and the hysterical and spoiled girl. There are three with lower ratings: the dark haired young adult boy (rating:7), the blond young adult boy who unnecessari shot the rattlesnake (rating:6), and the sheriff (he was completely and without any reason unhumanely cruel (rating:4)
Western .......2007-01-11
Richard Widmark did a good job playing an on the run outcast. He's done better but also done worse. I liked the movie as I am a western fan.
Excellent, Underated Western!.......2007-01-10
A very good interesting, well written and well acted western! The pace of the film is good and there's plenty of action. Richard Widmark, as usual delivers a very good performance. Beautiful scenery, with a very good musical score. I recommend this western, which you don't hear much about.

Just maybe the most shamelessly enjoyable of Cecil B. DeMille's pseudo-historical epics, this rumbustious frontier saga offers a three-for-one Western legends combo--Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Calamity Jane, all cutting up in the 1870s, with George Armstrong Custer and Abraham Lincoln thrown in for good measure. (Wait a minute, Lincoln was assassinated in 1865--oh, never mind.) Truth to tell, Buffalo Bill doesn't really pull his weight, since (1) he is hopelessly distracted by virtue of having recently married and (2) he's played by James Ellison, an eternal juvenile normally relegated to second-banana duty in Paramount's Hopalong Cassidy series. However, Gary Cooper's Wild Bill and Jean Arthur's Calamity supply enough star power to light up the Dakotas and parts of Missouri.
Every once in a while, DeMille and his small army of writers stumble upon an actual historical fact. Bill Cody did fight to the death with an Indian chief named Yellow Hand. George Custer and James Butler Hickok did both buy the farm in the summer of 1876. (Custer's Last Stand is handled imaginatively, if cheaply, as a vision narrated by a wandering Cheyenne warrior--none other than C.B.'s son-in-law Anthony Quinn in one of his earliest screen appearances.) Jack McCall (veteran weasel Porter Hall) did find himself in Deadwood, South Dakota, at the same time Wild Bill was drawing aces and eights in a poker game ... though McCall was not necessarily affiliated with DeMille's favorite villain, Charles Bickford, in the business of running guns to the Indians. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
Obscure battlefield accurately depicted.......2006-06-20
As someone who has actually been to the hard-to-find Beecher's Island battlefield site (in the badlands of NE Colorado), I was pleasantly amazed to note how accurately the terrain is depicted in "The Plainsman." I have been to the sites of other notable Indian fights, including both the Fetterman Massacre and Little Big Horn, and although distinctive in their own ways, they are basically just dusty hills in barren grasslands. Beecher's Island was different. It occured near a rare shady spot along a "river" which now is usually nothing but a dry shallow gulch running through some private grazing land; at the time of Major Forsyth's engagement with the Cheyenne under Roman Nose the Arikara River was a formidable obstacle with a few spits of sandy ground--the "island"-jutting up in the middle. At one end of the gulch/river bed there is a bluff some fifty feet or so high from behind which the Cheyenne formed, launched their charges, and rallied. At the summit of the bluff lies Roman Nose, killed in the battle, his lonely grave marker still (as of the mid-1990s) faithfully tended by unknown locals. The "island" itself looked completely unlike any other battlefield of the Plains Indian Wars, being tiny, made of sand, and strewn with dirftwood, which Forsyth and his little band formed into a sort of breastworks.
Almost all of this terrain is faithfully recreated in "The Plainsman." Obviously DeMille didn't shoot this in the Colorado Badlands; there was a contemporary pencil sketch in Harper's Weekly, and perhaps they based the scene on that. Whatever the reason, I was impressed. Now, if only they had had the Buffalo Soldiers rescue Forsyth's party, as they did in reality (a monument to them is present at the battlefield). . . .
I would be curious to know if anyone else has some insight into this?
The three stars are a compromise: 4 for entertainment value, 2.5 for historical accuracy.
western classic.......2006-03-11
it is a classic western with legendary western
characters such as wild bill hickock, calamity jane,
george custer, and buffalo bill cody. it is also
one of the better films with gary cooper where his
natural charm comes through. it does not disappoint
fans of westerns.
Faux Historical Epic; Nevertheless Engaging Entertainment!.......2005-03-06
"The Plainsman" represents the directorial prowess of Cecil B. DeMille at its most inaccurate and un-factual. It sets up parallel plots for no less stellar an entourage than Wild Bill Hickok (Gary Cooper), Buffalo Bill Cody (James Ellison), Calamity Jane (Jean Arthur), George Armstrong Custer and Abraham Lincoln to interact, even though in reality Lincoln was already dead at the time the story takes place. Every once in a while DeMille floats dangerously close toward the truth, but just as easily veers away from it into unabashed spectacle and showmanship. The film is an attempt to buttress Custer's last stand with a heap of fiction that is only loosely based on the lives of people, who were already the product of manufactured stuffs and legends.
TRANSFER: Considering the vintage of the film, this is a moderately appealing transfer, with often clean whites and extremely solid blacks. There's a considerable amount of film grain in some scenes and an absence of it at other moments. All in all, the image quality is therefore somewhat inconsistent, but it is never all bad or all good - just a bit better than middle of the road. Age related artifacts are kept to a minimum and digital anomalies do not distract. The audio is mono but nicely balanced.
EXTRAS: Forget it. It's Universal!
BOTTOM LINE: As pseudo-history painted on celluloid, this western is compelling and fun. Just take its characters and story with a grain of salt - in some cases - a whole box seems more appropriate!

CALAMITY JANE.......2001-11-03
On September 17, 1868, while fording the south fork of the Republican River in what is now Colorado, General "Sandy" Forsyth was ambushed by 600 Cheyennes and Arapahoes. Outnumbered ten to one, Forsyth and his troops took refuge on a brushy island in the middle of the river and for nine days stood off one of the fierest charges in the history of Indian wars. The ten years which followed this gallant episode saw the final defeat of the Indians on the Northern half of the Great Plains. Some 300 battles were fought, chiefly against the Sioux and Cheyennes. In 1876, the two nations rallied to wipe out General Custer's regiment on the Little Big Horn. By 1880, Indians were no longer a power on the plains. Cecil B. DeMille, the producer of super-colassal spectacles of the thirties and forties goes the American West for THE PLAINSMAN. The film opens with a prologue shot of President Lincoln and his Cabinet, from then on compresses many actual events in the history of the Great Plains. Its hero and heroine are two of the most famous characters of the West "Wild" Bill Hickok and "Calamity Jane" ably portrayed by Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur (whose Calamity is decidedly more glamourous - with rouge and mascara applied - than was the real Martha Jane Canary!) In one segment, the Cheyennes ambush Buffalo Bill for twelve minutes ; it was considered quite an exciting climax to 1937 audiences.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable but Unmemorable.......2007-05-01
"Last Train from Gun Hill" is a solid Western released in 1959. Kirk Douglas stars as Matt Morgan, a Marshal in a small western town (the movie was filmed in Arizona). He's married to a beautiful Native American woman (the movie uses the terms of the time and calls her a "squaw"), who is raped and murdered. He determines to find out who killed her, with only one clue - a saddle inscribed with initials. He turns to one of his best friends, Anthony Quinn (Craig Belden), for help. He eventually discovers who the guilty parties are, which leads to a number of complications for the main characters.
You get about what you'd expect from a Western from this era - a few gun fights, somewhat wooden dialogue, and a general lack of realism. Fortunately, the movie is buoyed considerably by the presence of Douglas and Quinn; Carolyn Jones is also quite good as Quinn's confused, rebellious girlfriend. Director John Sturges had done better work before this movie (Bad Day at Black Rock, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral) and would go on to do better work in the future (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape). In fact, he was nominated for an Academy Award in 1955 for Best Director for "Bad Day at Black Rock." However, overall, I enjoyed "Last Train from Gun Hill," even if I'm unlikely to remember it for more than a week.
Last Train from Gun Hill..........2007-02-03
I've always like this movie, and it finally came out on disk. Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn are at top form in this Western Drama. Who will win? You've got to find out for yourself...Five stars!!
Two strong leads: Douglas and Quinn!.......2006-11-10
Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn) is a powerful cattle-rancher, the richest of Gunhill, simply the Boss...
His son Rick (Earl Holliman) is weak, coward, a punk kid who just raped and killed Catherine Morgan (Ziva Rodann), a beautiful Indian woman ignoring that she is the wife of Matt Morgan (Kirk Douglas) the Marshall of the town...
From a costly elegant saddle, Matt recognized that the rapist-killer of his wife is close to reach... He decides to take the train to Gun Hill to see an old friend, Craig Belden, asking for help...
The tragic moment of the film is when Craig (Quinn) realized that the murderer is his own son Rick... He can't deliver his son to Matt... He knows the Marshall will hang him...
Quinn is the tragic figure... He is torn between his loyalty and fidelity to his best friend and his deep affection and devotion to the only son he raised alone...
Two superb actors were caught in the tragedy... The denouement was evident!
Directed beautifully by the maker of major fine westerns John Sturges, the film walks slowly toward a showdown, an inevitable clash from which only one will take the last train from Gun Hill...
Formulaic but Still Gripping.......2006-09-01
A "High Noon"/"3:10 to Yuma" storyline (one good man against dozens of bad ones, no one to help him but one woman, yada yada) but with a few twists that take the ho-hum out of it. Good performances by Quinn and Douglas and Earl Holliman plays the evil/weak/horrid son so well you want to reach into the screen and kick him silly.
I almost gave the movie only 4 stars, but I think it deserves the fifth.
Superb Kirk Douglas Western - His Best.......2006-06-01
Kirk Douglas and director John Sturges had worked together in 1957's The Gunfight at The OK Corral, and Douglas and frequent co-star Burt Lancaster had made a memorable Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday pair.
So when the pair reteamed for 1959's Last Train From Gun Hill, it stood to reason that it would be at least a good film. Well, it's a great film, Douglas' best Western, and one of the great Westerns in the great Western movie heyday in the 50's.
Douglas plays Matt Morgan, a town marshal whose Indian wife is raped and murdered by a young hoodlum from the town of Gun Hill. Morgan finds out that the punk is the son of Gun Hill's owner and boss Craig Belden. Morgan and Belden were saddle pals in the past, and Belden once saved Morgan's life. When Morgan sees that Belden is going to protect his son, Morgan overpowers the son, and holds up with him in a hotel, planing to take the son to justice on the last train out that evening.
This movies has everything-great performances, a great script, and a aura of suspense that is sometimes nerve wracking. Last Train From Gun Hill is a must for every Western movie collector.

Shaun's still Got It.......2005-10-31
I do love a good western, and this was a pretty good western. Although Willie Nelson is not as good an actor as he is a singer, Shaun Cassidy is HOT HOT HOT in this movie. The first part of the movie is pretty amusing with quite a few old favorite actors, quite a few of whom I believe have since passed on, but it is a pretty good way to spend an hour and a half. With Richard Widmark, Stuart Whitman, Dub Taylor and my all-time favorite western actor, Jack Elam, I really enjoyed this movie.

I'm not a western fan, but I enjoyed this movie! Country & western singer Willie Nelson does a great job portraying his villainy character, John Henry Lee, a person that tries to blow up a railroad. Former 70's teen rock idol Shaun Cassidy's acting has improved since his work as Joe Hardy on T.V.'s "Hardy Boys Mysteries", even though he still pursued his acting career after the show ended in T.V. and national theatre, and is now a T.V. producer and writer. He does fairly well playing a young gang leader named Cotton. For a T.V. movie, this is made on a good budget and still gets played on T.V. stations. Check it out if you see it advertise on your local T.V. listings!

One Terrible Movie--Don't bother!!!.......2006-05-16
This is a very bad movie--D movie--the acting is terrible--plot is poor--what is Richard Widmark doing in a movie this bad at the end of his career? I guess he needed the money. Willie Nelson was pretty bad-he should stick to his singing. This movie is so mickey mouse I barely sat thru it and I traded it in soon after I bought it. Avoid this one at all costs.!!!!!!!!!!!

Description
The last bandit riders, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were America's most famous outlaws in 1900. Cassidy and his Wild Bunch robbed banks and trains along an outlaw trail from Wyoming to Colorado to Southern Utah. But with Pinkerton detectives pursuing, Butch and Sundance fled to South America. Trapped by Bolivian officers, they died in a bloody gunfight. Or did they? Was Butch reborn as William T. Phillips in Spokane 20 years later? Did the West's last badman escape the law in the end?

Destination: Unknown.......2006-01-05
LE TRAIN is one of the most intensive and distressing films ever made about the occupation of France during WWII. It contains one of Jean Louis Trintignant's most sublime performances and one of Romy Schneider's most hypnotic. The director's greatest achievement is that he conveyed a familiar, almost homey atmosphere in the midst of large-scale mass-scenes.
The story is simple: Frenchmen flee the Nazis by train. Trintignant's pregnant wife travels first-class, he takes the stock-car. His fellow-passengers who huddle together on a space sufficient for two horses are a nursing mother, a full-blooded wench and her paramour, a deserter and a roughneck who start soon enough to molest the provocatively passive Romy Schneider. Trintignant is so mesmerized by Schneider that he shares his water adn his bread rather with her than with his wife! The Nazi's throw down pamphlets and protest their peaceful intentions. They also shoot passengers who "follow the call of nature" on a field. When they arrive in La Rochelle Trintignant is told that, as an electrician, he's welcome. But the Jewish Schneider is not. In a sudden impulse he passes her off as his wife. It goes without saying that his good deed does not go unpunished...
When I think that the recent flood of anti-Nazi-films nearly kept me from watching this one! It is touching, involving, simply unforgettable. Romy Schneider has my vote as best actress of the seventies! Between 1969 and 1979 she made more quality films than any other actress, many of them masterpieces: TRIO INFERNAL, LA BANQUIERE...Her painfully intensive performances were of course energy-consuming efforts that ultimately went beyond her strength. She died young...
ROMY BEAUTIFUL & GREAT AS EVER-DVD NOT SO GOOD.......2005-07-14
Romy Schneider was not only a stunningly beautiful and charismatic woman, but also one of the deepest, most sensitive and touching actresses the world has ever known. She is great as ever in this movie, esp. the latter half. Unfortunately the DVD is very bad quality, taken from an old dusty print with badly dubbed English. But thank god for the dvd remote, way too much time is spent on long shots of the train, etc and old newsreel footage instead of on Romy and Jean Louis Trinignant.I guess they didnt have enough of a plot to sustain a whole film. Too bad the movie and the dvd arent good, but Romy is Romy, truly a one of a kind star. This dvd is strictly for Romy fans.
Lovers in a train.......2004-08-27
This poignant story is told between the WW2 hell . Two strangers who meet casually in a train in the middle of the hopeless , the uncertainess and the agony of an unending war .
I really expect the producers and headquarter who made it possible this transfer , watch carefully the enormous meaning and talent of this french director , who made several important films such as The Chat (Medal silver for best actor to Jaen Gabin 1973) , A etrange affair (Medal silver for best actor to Michel Piccoli 1981) , The veuve Clouderc (Simone Signoret and Alain Delon).
He really deserves this honor .
It's a question of fairness for a worthable career .
Superb performances of Rommy Schneider and Jean Louis Trigtinant .
POOR QUALITY.......2003-08-19
I bought this DVD, after seeing Corbucci's "The Great Silence" starring Trintignon, and having head of Romy Scheider, wanted to get it as well...
The one star I gave this movie is not pertaining to the movie itself, but the poor video quality. It was as if I was watching someone's home video, old and yellowed, grainy and the sound was terrible.
In retrospect I see how it's merely 4.99, but sadly I bought it anyway, hoping for a refreshing new (rediscovered) european movie....
bottom line, probably a good movie but I couldn't get through it with such poor dvd transfer.... beware, or wait until it comes out restored later.
A strong film marred by a so-so VHS transfer.......2000-07-13
A while back, I was searching for a Romy Schneider film as a birthday present for my mother, and I decided to purchase this film, The Last Train. I had read good reviews about this forgotten film, and felt that it was a worthwhile purchase. Indeed, the film is quite powerful and rather moving. It is set in WW2 and concerns the plight of a group of people as they attempt to flee from the advancing German troops. They board the last train leaving the town (hence the title). The film is not a suspense thriller, however, and concerns itself more with the relationships that develop between the various individuals on the train. Romy Schneider plays one such emigrant, a German girl with a secret. While the film contains brief periods of humour, it is for the most part a serious film with a somewhat melancholy conclusion. One sees in this film some of the themes that would later show up in more recent films such as Schindler's List, which equals the dramatic effect of The Last Train.
I would rate this film a strong 5 stars, however, there are some problems with the VHS version. First, although this is a French film, the tape is dubbed. Some people prefer dubbing to subtitles, but I prefer to hear foreign films as originally recorded. Besides, we always tend to lose some nuances of the vocal performances after dubbing. The second problem with the tape is that it has a rather poor video transfer, looking like it was recorded from film stock that had deteriorated from too many viewings. Same thing goes for the sound quality. It's pretty bad. It essentially looks like a budget VHS tape. Perhaps a better version exists somewhere in France, but not in the States. Bottom line - the VHS version looks like an excellent film that was recorded off a television set with so-so reception. If you're willing to overlook this problems, you will be rewarded with a strong cinematic experience. The choice is yours, but as I've said, the film is quite good.
