When Howard (Edward Albert) gets promoted to senior partner instead of Larry (Larry Poindexter), Larry's wife Erica (the abundantly endowed Julie Strain) uses the occult to cause an accident that leaves Howard in a wheelchair. But Howard's wife, Amelia (Linda Blair), is no slouch in black magic herself; she kills Erica and makes Larry think he's responsible. Larry tries to rebuild his life, but Amelia has other plans. To carp about plot holes or acting in this straight-to-video film is to miss the point entirely. Sorceress has it all: a tortured hero; plenty of babe-a-licious women (and a guy or two) shedding their clothes with mad abandon to explore their own dark impulses; and a villain with motives so Byzantine they must have been inspired by the writer's last conversation with his agent. The prolific director, Jim Wynorski, cowrote another, unrelated film also called Sorceress back in 1983. Maybe he just likes the title. --Geof Miller
Description
Larry's beautiful and sexy wife Erica will do anything to keep her husband happy, even kill for him. But Erica makes a fatal mistake when she tries to kill Howard, Larry's main competition for partnership because Howard's wife is more than a practicing witch...she's an expert. All the pleasures of the flesh and malevolence of black magic collide with volatile force in a deadly experiment in witchcraft.

Originally developed as an epic called Kingdom of the Sun, The Emperor's New Groove lost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to Aladdin in its quotient of laughs for kids and adults. The original story centers on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of her hunk of the month, a lunk named Kronk (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humor of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about him). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend on Seinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There's even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang. --Doug Thomas

I love this movie! It is so funny! One of Disney's best! David Spade does a great job as the voice of the Emperor in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars The Emperor DEFINITELY has a "New Groove" .......2007-01-04

This movie is so cool and funny!!! I love Emperor Kuzco and how Kuzco cares abouut himself. It was funny. This movie showed how Kuzco learned how to step outside his own world and get along with other people around him, not being selfish. It's filled with many special features too!

5 out of 5 stars Groove?.......2006-12-17

I remember when "The Emperor's New Groove" came out. A lot of people were raving about it, and that kind of put me off. Still, I finally got round to watching it, and it's not too bad, actually. It's light hearted with a South American flavor, featuring a little bit of music by Sting (sung by Tom Jones), which I appreicated. The story features a South American emperor transformed into llama trying to turn back into his old self, while he changes (in other ways) for the better along the road. Simple enough, but that's all it needs to be.

A fine, light hearted Disney adventure. Worth a look for animation fans.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny!.......2006-10-20

I love this movie. How can you not with such hilarious diologue? One of my most favorites is when Yzma outlines her first plan to get rid of Kuzko. Ending with a hilarious "I'll smash it with a hammer!" But diologue aside, there's so much more to this movie. The characters are so wonderfully individual, from self-absorbed Kuzko, to evil Yzma with her "secret lab", to dim witted Kronk with his shoulder angel and devil
(Secondly, look what I can do.
Um, I don't see how that...
No, no. He's got a point.)
Over and over agian, this movie will keep you laughing. Watch, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE KRONK!.......2006-09-24

When I saw this movie in the theater, I thought it was just okay. But then someone gave it to me on VHS, and the more I watched it, the funnier it became. Now I'm addicted and have to have it on DVD. This movie is HILARIOUS!!

Wrath of the Dragon God, the sequel to the unfortunate 2000 theatrical release Dungeons and Dragons, is a pleasant surprise in that it not only hews closer to the popular role-playing game that provides its source material, but it's also an enjoyable fantasy adventure with plenty of action and special effects. Longtime movie heel Bruce Payne, who played a second-string villain in the first film, returns here as the evil sorcerer Damodar, who uses a sinister magic orb to launch an attack against a kingdom; a brave but untested group of adventurers (all character types from the game) band together to fight Damodar and his legion of monsters. Gerry Lively, a veteran director of photography on numerous low-budget genre films, guides the proceedings with a capable hand, and the script wisely jettisons the aggravating humor of the previous film in favor of straightforward action and derring-do. --Paul Gaita

Description

This sequel to Dungeons & Dragons, based on the popular role-playing game, fills the screen with amazing visual effects of spectral ghouls, diabolical traps, thundering armies and huge winged dragons. The story follows five champions of Izmer who must perform prodigious feats of brain, brawn and sorcery.

Dungeons & Dragons-Wrath of the Dragon God (DVD)

I guess when Hollywood gets really desperate they start looking for different things they can make a movie out of. You know comic books, toys, board games, computer games, etc. I wonder what's next?

One would hope they'd read one of David Weber's or John Ringo's books and make a movie from it. The Honor Harrington series would be good or the Empire of Man series.

Dungeons & Dragons began life as a quest board game. You know one of those you wander around looking in every door, chamber, or hidey hole you can seeking:

- Tools,
- weapons, or
- Items of power, such as rings and such.

Meanwhile while you're searching something or the other is trying to kill you. These combats are interspersed on occasions with long spells of absolute boredom until the end of the game, if you survive, to have some kind of dramatic, climatic battle

Unfortunately making a movie out of boring game results in a boring movie. The computer game, at least tests your skill somewhat.

In the movie, the evil Damodar does not fear death. He's already dead and the champion must save the world before his girlfriend becomes undead herself. Rotting from the feet upward, so hurry, guy.

There are five champions seeking the black orb that has been hidden for a thousand years. That means that four are expendable. You'll just have to guess at which four go "Tango Uniform".

Now that I've watched it one time I'm wondering who I can give it to, hmm, maybe my stepson who likes Ghost Rider

Don't waste your money on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-06-14

I'm not an art or film critic, just an average Joe that enjoys good entertainment.

I saw this in some random manner, on cable, bored probably. I love this genre, long time RPG player, and fantasy buff, but after seeing the first one, I must have been truly board to watch this.

Imagine my surprise when I was COMPLETELY entranced! It was great fun! Not just following the "rules" of D&D, but telling a good story, with well done dialog and acting, (again, no critic, but I know what I like).

It's not a "blockbuster", I imagine it had a low budget, but very well worth the cost of the DVD. Give this a look if you like the genre, and were disappointed with the first.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2007-03-27

This is a good solid D&D movie. All the basic character types are represented well in the film and they haven't tried to adapt it to what hollywood think a good movie should be. In the first movie the central rogue character was your typical hollywood charismatic heroic good guy with a comic relief sidekick. There's none of that here. The rogue is what you'd expect. Someone of dubious morals who does most of his things for money.

The traps were well done in the dungeons but the mage who went on the adventure could have been done better, no magic missile or anything. I think she was throwing lightning bolts constantly but they were not used correctly. There even was a cleric of Obad-Hai(shock horror to the bible belt) but I didn't see him use any healing magic.

In general most characters in the film were a little one dimensional except for the main two but they were well done in that dimension.

Btw Damodar is the same character from the first film cursed by Jeremy Irons' mage charcter into a state of undeath for failing him. (The curse automatically went off when Irons died at the end of the first film). So the character is a fighter. With the help of some evil priests in his service at the start of the movie he recovers an artifact and any magic he performs through the movie is through the use of the artifact, nothing else. The Lich even tells him that he's not capable of using it to its fullest potential! He is not a sorceror!

3 out of 5 stars Much better than the first!!!.......2007-02-10

If you play or have played the game, you'll appreciate some of this flick. If they had the budget they did from the first movie this could have been much better. Overall it's not bad for movies of this genre - worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars More fitting to the D & D title but still not a great movie.......2007-01-18

The 2001 release of the Dungeon & Dragons movie was a much anticipated flop. They only did a decent job of interpreting the game onto the screen. I wasn't even aware they did a sequel until a friend mentioned it in passing.
This movie is actually more faithful to the game than the first installment. There is a wider variety of recognizable links to the wonderful role-playing game. More identifiable creatures, spells and character types.
Even with this in mind, the movie is not all that hot. The story is very linear and without a lot of surprises or intrigue. To equate it to a D & D adventure, this is a very decent Hack-n-slash adventure put on film. The grand plot and world developing are left for another time.
The CGI monsters and spell effects are well done but appear a little fake when integrated into the background. When you are requesting a full-sized dragon to be on screen, CGI is the only way to go so the creators were limited in that respect.
This movie is worth picking up if you are a long-time fan or want a good taste of the D & D universe. If you are not sure, rent it and see if you want to make the purchase.

YZMA--"Tell us where the talking llamer is, and we'll burn your house to the ground."
KRONK--"Uh, don't you mean, or?"
YZMA--(heavy sigh) "Tell us where the talking llamer is, OR we'll burn your house to the ground."
PACHA'S-DAUGHTER-WHOSE-NAME-I-FORGET--"Well, which is it? That seems like a pretty crucial conjunction."

That is one of my favorite quotes from the movie. Which isn't saying much, for if I were to tell you ALL my favorite quotes, I would be quoting the entire movie. Which I can do. But I don't think anyone here wants that.

Featuring the considerable talents of David Spade, Patrick Warburton, Eartha Kitt, John Goodman, and others, this movie is, in a word, gorgeous. It is one of the only animated movies I can watch now, as a fifteen-year-old, and still adore. (Though I'd love to see the originally planned film, KINGDOM OF THE SUN -- it sounds interesting, according to the professional reviews.)

Matching Kronk's wackiness is Yzma's hilarious villainy ("Pull the lever, Kronk! WRONG LEVEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!") and matching off Kuzco's selfishness and sarcastic wit is Pacha the peasant. In this movie you end up rooting for the "villains" -- Kronk and Yzma -- almost as much as Kuzco and Pacha. Kuzco is, of course, at the beginning, more a villain than a good guy anyway.

THE PLOT: By firing his millenia-old adviser Yzma, Emperor Kuzco gets himself a death wish from said advisor, aided by her hapless right-hand man, Kronk, who accidentally mixes up the poison with extract of llama and turns the former emporor into a long-necked hairball. Too softhearted to hurl the bratty eighteen-year-old Emperor over the edge of a waterfall, he accidentally trips and throws the bag holding Kuzco onto the cart of Pacha, the leader of a village Kuzco means to demolish in order to build himself a summer house with waterslide -- "It's my birthday gift to me!!!" Together, Pacha and Kuzco must get Kuzco back to the palace and back into human form -- but meanwhile the new empress Yzma has found out about Kronk's blunder and is chasing him too -- or, rather, Kronk is, and she's riding in a litter he's wearing as a backpack.

I can't give much more enthusiastic praise for this movie than I've already given, but I'll just leave you with one last, classic quote between Yzma and Kronk.

"WHAT? A llama? HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD!"
"Yeah...weird."
....
"Take him out of town and finish the job! NOW!"
"But what about dinner?" (Kronk is a talented chef, did I mention that?)
"Kronk...this is kind of important."
"But what about dessert?"
"Ah -- well, I suppose there's time for dessert."
(Kronk nods eagerly) "And coffee!"
"All right, a quick cup of coffee. THEN TAKE HIM OUT OF TOWN AND FINISH THE JOB!"

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Demon Llama.......2007-04-23

I was once an anti-fan of Disney. "The Emperor's New Groove," by my reckoning, marks the temporal moment when Disney went wrong. So wrong that it's right. In fact, I am firmly convinced that those giving the green light to projects, as well as those clearing a project for release, were out of their brainwashed Disney Gourde when making and releasing this movie. Thank the Incan gods for that!

To repeat the warning: "beware the groove!" Groo-oo-ooove... Never have I laughed so hard during an animated Disney flick. As I've now introduced this movie to so very man people, I had the opportunity of being there for my blood-sister to turn to me and ask, "I don't like this guy. Am I suppose to like this character?"

"No, no you're not. Not at all!"

For fun and adventure, my brother Tristan developed the "Emperor's New Groove Drinking Game." Every time you hear the words "Kuzco" or "llama," everyone watching takes a shot. I had to add this, as Disney accidentally left this information out. Everything else has been included.

5 out of 5 stars The Emperor's New Groove.......2007-03-16

The phrase, "Don't judge a book by its cover" is one of the many phrases shown in this movie. Once arrogant teenaged emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his ex-advisor's botched plan, it really doesn't make that much difference. Then, with the help of a village leader, Pacha, Kuzco (although not at first) eventually realises his mistakes.
(A few of these mistakes being firing someone because they're ugly, trying to build a water park on a village, leaving someone hanging to their death AND being extrememly self-centered).
This DVD is also packed with bonus features, and two discs, which can make hours of fun watching.

There's nothing original in The Scorpion King, but this derivative action franchise gets off to a rousing start by cleverly stealing from a lot of better movies. Capitalizing on his brief cameo in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. World Wrestling Federation star the Rock) stars as Mathayus, an Akkadian assassin in the age preceding Egyptian pharaohs, who vows to avenge his brother's murder by an undefeated warlord (Steven Brand) prophesied to become the desert-ruling Scorpion King. Their battle for supremacy comprises most of the film's brisk 95-minute running time, punctuated by comic relief from Mathayus's obligatory sidekick (Grant Heslov), romance with a beautiful sorceress (Kelly Hu), and alliance with a massive Nubian (Michael Clarke Duncan) on the eve of their climactic showdown. There's no rhyme or reason to the film's depiction of ancient civilization (the costuming is particularly ludicrous), but the Rock demonstrates adequate action-star potential, and director Chuck Russell (The Mask) wraps it all in a slick, professional package. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars So bad it's actually lots of fun.......2007-06-18

This isn't the type of movie you watch to gain a greater understanding of human nature, it's the type of movie you watch when you want to zone out for 90 minutes & just have fun. While there may really have been an ancient King named Scorpion, this movie is among the most historically inaccurate flicks I've ever seen. The fighting styles are wrong, the peoples are wrong, the times are, the weapons are wrong, heck the costumes are wrong & so are the horses (stirrups didn't arrive until the mid first millenia AD). The dialogue at some points is just awful, but through it all the actors never take themselves too seriously and The Rock is able to pull it off. I enjoyed this movie not because it makes an attempt at authenticity, but because it simply doesn't care and goes out to enjoy itself. Thats what makes this movie fun.

3 out of 5 stars Bad Acting By Cast Members!.......2007-04-06

"The Rock" can't act! Some of the other characters weren't that great either in terms of their acting abilities, but "The Rock" was the worst offender. Basically, this is my only gripe with this film--- Poor acting performances by the cast!

Otherwise, the action, stunts, costuming, make-up, special effects/computer graphics and storyline were all fine.

I ordered this movie for a friend but I watched it before I gave it to him. It is not my kind of movie but I did enjoy it. The production was quite good. Some of the acting could have been a little better.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly surpasses mediocre, I guess........2007-01-25

The plot is utterly formulaic, and "The Rock" has all the acting ability of a cinder block, but this movie isn't totally boring.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Spin-Off.......2007-06-22

This movie is a spin off from the Mummy. They've done a good job with the concept. There is a good story line that keeps you wondering how is this going to work out. The characters are believable and likeable. It is a fun entertaining picture, something you can watch several times over.

5 out of 5 stars Fun film, great HD-DVD.......2007-05-14

Arnold had Conan, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has the Scorpion King. His first film as leading man and the Rock nails it, he's backed by an amazing list of co-stars (Bernard Hill "LOTR" and Michael Clarke Duncan "Sin City").
This movie calls back to the glory days of adventure films tongue-in-cheek and sword in sheath, pure popcorn entertainment. The HD-DVD transfer looks amazing, a must have for action/adventure fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Scorpion King Is Good With Popcorn.......2007-02-20

Okay, the movie storyline isn't the greatest, a good amount of the acting is cheeseball and the same can be said about the dialogue. The movie has been around for a while so most people reading this are already aware of these facts. But that doesn't detract from another fact, and that is The Scorpion King is just a fun popcorn movie. It doesn't take a whole lot of gray matter to appreciate the movie when just watching it should suffice for an enjoyable passing of time. Other than that, the movie's one really redeeming quality is the superb picture tranfer to the HD format. It's actually amazing the amount of attention(alliteration not intended) to detail it's been given...can't figure that one out at all.

If you would like a more in-depth review of The Scorpion King or other movies on HD DVD and Blu-ray, try highdefdigest (There is a dot com after the name, but Amazon won't allow it. I guess because maybe it would default to a web link). Their reviews are insightful and unbiased in the format war.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, great product!.......2007-01-05

I liked this movie for its action and ancient civilization plot. I could care less if anything is historically accurate. I like the tough characters, the plot of betrayal, the oppression of the weak. My only criticism of this movie is that many people, especially The Rock, act too modern. Many commanding people have to appear strong, tough, and superior. The actor who plays Memnon, the bad guy, does a good job at this.

As for the DVD, the HD DVD industry strikes again! I love the fact that it is making hybrid discs, with HD on one side, standard on the other, so you can build an HD DVD collection even before you get an HD player. And, unlike the Blu-ray, you get ALL the special features that the standard DVD has, even if it's not a hybrid disc. Blu-ray movies have erased many of the special features that the standard DVDs have. GO HD DVD. Fight Blu-ray!

    Description

This animated film exquisitely recounts the tale of tiny Kirikou -- a clever, courageous little boy born in an African village in which Karaba the Sorceress has placed a terrible curse -- as he sets out on a quest to free his village of the curse and find out the secret of why Karaba is so wicked. Kirikou depicts a precocious newborn infant who battles ignorance, and so-called evil, with endearing perseverance. This film speaks to the child within us all who yearns to express and defend the best in others and ourselves. Kirikou's stunning visuals are accented by a traditional music soundtrack by African music giant Youssou N' Dour.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved this.......2007-06-16

This was a netflix recommendation and I must say I loved this and my daughter loved it too, there are so many good messages and morals I had to buy it.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting Movie.......2007-05-12

This movie is a great look at an African oral story. Be warned that it does stay true to the African theme and therefore has nudity. However, it is tastfully done and is not a distraction from the story line. The story follows the character Kirikou, a little boy who has miraculous powers, through his journey of growing up. The theme of the movie is one of forgiveness and mercy to those who may seem like enemies. Very well done.

5 out of 5 stars A great source of inspiration for artists around the world.......2007-04-26

This film has some of the most beautiful quality I have seen in animation feature. It's nothing less than Disney quality done in the traditional way.
The cuts and camera shots similar to the way Africans paint their own life, and vivid colorful background that bring one into the imaginative world of Kirikou.

The animation is also quite different from your normal type of animation, there's a real flatness to the piece that serves it well, but the animation is not at all amaturish. All one can say is that it's "different" from what we are accustomed to.

What is pleasent is that we get none of those formulas we are so used to from Hollywood or Disney and other big enterprises in the US, and get to experience a completely different type of storytelling, similar to the way their people tell it. True to the culture, and present the beauty of a different group of people. This film really captures its audience... I feel it can use even more recommandation than it gets.

I would have never seen the film if it's not for my school showing it to me.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie that sticks with you.......2007-04-20

This is one of the most amazing movies I have seen in a long time. It is so simple, yet so impressionable.

I have watched this movie 3 times in 2 weeks. Each of the 3 times, there were kids around ranging in age from 5 to 12. At first the older kids were making fun of it because they viewed it as being totally unrealistic, but then they kept watching it. The funny part was how one week after they watched the movie, the same group who made fun of it, wanted to watch it again and to this day, the kids will quote things from the movie.

The animation is beautiful, the music is well done, and the story is fabulous. I am so happy my boyfriend discovered this movie. I rarely buy movies, but this is one I am going to add to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and delightful, this small folk tale is a treasure with important lessons for our time.......2006-12-16

This is a wonderful film, that can be enjoyed equally by parents and children. Kirikou is a small and precocious boy who never lets prejudice get in the way of his fierce determination to protect his people from an evil sorceress. He is driven by curiosity and courage but also admits his own feelings of vulnerability; he is a wonderful example to children, a much more compelling hero than most of the whiny characters that dominate most Hollywood animation. Whether or not it is a traditional folktale, it captures the feel of many of the African folk legends I have heard, and depicts a vibrant culture that is both suffused with ordinary magic and yet deeply human. The animation of this humorous and touching film is both simple and delightful, a perfect match for the story.

What is perhaps most intriguing is that it is an example of the kind of story so prevalent among folk legends that show how traditional societies are aware of the dangers of fixed traditions and open to the possibility of new ideas. There is a longstanding prejudice within cultures based on change and "progress" that traditional cultures are backwards and unable to accommodate appropriate change -- in this story (and in fact in many traditional folk stories), this problem is faced and dealt with from an internal standpoint -- in other words, this story is about how change can be accommodated within traditional societies and how such change can be encouraged by traditional storytelling, and that such change does not require a rejection of tradition. Criticisms of dogmatism are embraced within this story, that depicts many of the tribal people as resisting inquiry and assuming they already know what is best even when their traditional methods of trying to defeat the enemy in battle are no longer working. The wise persons of this story are the young Kirikou -- too young to assume he already knows how things work and how to solve problems, and young enough to ask questions and be willing to learn from one who will actually answer his questions rather than merely brush them aside -- and his wise grandfather -- who, it is significant, has left the village to live by himself on the mountain. It is also significant that the young Kirikou's main quest is not to defeat the evil sorceress but to understand what has made her evil. It is only by understanding (and even empathizing with) the enemy that he can defeat her --an important lesson even for our own troubled times, full of ignorance and of the arrogance that assumes war (and the resistance of change even where the status quo is unsettling) is the only solution to incomprehensible threats. At its heart, this is a story about how the villagers learn to accept new wisdom, from the mouth of a child and of an elder who has gone beyond status-seeking pride.

An evil sorceress plans to wreak havoc on Swan Lake by stealing the forbidden arts--a treasure that gives its keeper unlimited power. Odette is kidnapped as part of her master plan, prompting a showdown with Derek. Ambitious in narrative only, this potboiler doesn't look like much in contrast to the first film in the series. It's also a shame the producers couldn't bring back some of the original vocal cast: John Cleese and Steven Wright. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Swan Princess The Enchanted Treasure.......2004-05-06

I think The Enchanted Treasure is the best of three Swan Princess titles. The new bird character was a welcome addition, and the sorcoress was a lot better than the mountain wizard of the 2nd film. I like the link to the main villian of the first film. One good thing about sequals is that characters are already known so the story moves at a pace that I prefer. While the first movie is good, I like this one a little better.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Cute.......2003-09-23

This movie wasn't the best of the three, but it was very cute. The characters are pretty good in addition to the new bird character. It is good for young kids, not really older audiences, but if you liked the first one, this one should pass fairly well. I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Best out of 3.......2003-01-19

This is the best movie out of all 3. When it was on t.v and I found out it was one three times I watch it all three times not missing a single part. And I love the songs they're the best. But I would have to say the one Derek sings Because I Love Her, is the best out of them all. My favorite part was when Derek and Rogers were agruing.

1 out of 5 stars Another annoying unnecessary violent villian sequel.......2002-07-09

Though some humorous parts, in my opinion overall this has the usual unnecessary violent action and nasty villian try-to-kill Derek or Odette plot. The good parts are overshadowed (pardon the pun) by the bad. Not quite throwaway, but full or irritating voices and not for young children.

1 out of 5 stars "This movie is better than the first"!? Blasphamey!.......2002-03-02

Do not listen to these Joes saying "Oh this movie is so good!" This movie is bad. Very. It's nothing compared to the MAGNIFICENT first. I can't believe this movie got a 5 in Amazon! I mean, the whole world is dumber when the movie was released. I hope there will NEVER be another Swan Princess...

    Description

Ronny Yu (The Bride of Chucky, The Phantom Lover, Warriors Of Virtue) directs this highly operatic fable based on a well-known martial arts novel with LESLIE CHEUNG (Temptress Moon, Farewell, My Concubine) and BRIGITTE LIN (Dragon Inn, Deadful Melody) as doomed lovers caught in the crossfire of warring clans. With beautiful cinematography by PETER PAU (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and over-the-top action sequences, THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR is one of the best swordplay fantasy film ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The groom with black hair.......2007-02-14

What a great movie. Ive seen it more than once and it got better each time. The way it is shot is pretty old school but the story and acting or top notch! there is not a lot of fighting action but the love felt between the two main characters really keeps things interesting. the ending of the movie is sad but the reason why the swordsman stays on the mountain ledge is very romantic! To me , great story , acting, and old school flair!

1 out of 5 stars Widely acknowledged classic, I hated it .......2006-11-10

The movie is widely considered a classic for Hong Kong action movies. Leslie Cheung is a fantastic actor, and I enjoyed Bridgitte Lin very much in Chungking Express. So, even though I don't normally enjoy action movies and certainly not kung fu movies, I still decided to watch this movie. I was extremely disappointed. The cinematography is boring and poorly done. The plot is juvenile. It is the type of movie that would appeal to teenage boys. I hated the movie. However, I fully understand that many, many people love the movie and that it is one of the most important HK movies ever made.

4 out of 5 stars Kung fu with a hint of an erotic flavor to it.......2006-06-20

The story is a little different from your standard kung fu films. The minimally erotic content was kind of a nice change too, as you don't see that in most kung fu films. My only complaint about the film is that some of the battle sequences, they reduced the frame rate, which lessens the intensity of the combat.

(Brigitte) Lin Ching Hsia is a great action actress as usual. If you like her films, you won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Ronny Yu's masterpiesce. .......2006-04-08

Now as long as you know hong kong films, you know that they are like all low budget and therefore are really hit and miss. This is a definite hit. The beautiful brigitte lin is I guess a girl who was raised by wolves and she works for this evil cult. She helps a young boy and she ends up later being his lover. Now when I review my absolute favorites I usually just go off on the keyboard, but nobody I know has ever seen this movie. In omaha, nebraska, we don't get all these movies at a chinatown store and my best buy store has like nothing that it shows on it's website. Therefore I need to go to places like amazon and ebay to get the movies I want. It really sucks. So I will make sure I don't give anything away cause I would feel absolutely horrible. But I will tell you a few things to look for that made this a classic for me.

BRIGITTE LIN-she is hotter than ever in this movie. But not nearly just that, after seeing this the first time the bide became my favorite woman character EVER. And that goes for all genres of all countries movies. And all TV shows for that matter. She gives such a powerful performance, and I will just say that when the white hair comes in to place you will feel her pain. The director just did a brilliant job with EVERYTHING.

WUDANG KID SHOWING OFF SWORD TECHNIQUE- this is a scene you will always remember, it is so beautiful, this shot alone makes this movie very unique. And the kids sword skills aren't too bad either.
THE TWINS-you will never foget these 2.
THE CAMERAWORK-the cinematography is just astonashing, I saw a reviewer complain about thi, but it is another thing that makes this unique. Stunning.
THE ACTING-you are not gonna get much better acting than this. Other than a goofy character who was very good, everyone's acting is brilliant.

Now the version I recieved was not the special edition. But I don't buy dvd's for the special features. But then again it would have been really nice to hear the ronny yu commentary not just cause he speaks perfect english and i wouldn't have to read somebody's translation of ronny's speech, but because we just don't get many of these commentaries. I mean wouldn't it be cool to hear like jet li on fist of legend, donnie yen on drunken tai chi, or woo oing on iron monkey. But anyway the picture quality is very good, not good for a 93 film, but still good. It's widesreened and has 5.1 sound that rocks, so you can't beat that, the music is sweet. I bought this used over amazon so if you buy it directly from them you may get the special edition but I have now learned ot ask before you buy.

4 out of 5 stars Forbidden love in a time of war.......2005-12-29

Finally, I get my first chance to see this Brigitte Lin that so many martial arts film fans keep talking about. She's beautiful, delicate, and absolutely deadly as Lien, a mysterious assassin raised by wolves and later trained in martial arts. With or without the white hair, she is all but untouchable in battle. The only real problem is that she is on the wrong side of the fight, serving as an elite assassin for an evil cult led by a, uh, unique brother-sister pairing that attacks the Eight Clans. Cho Yi-Hang (Leslie Cheung) is the designated successor to the current master of the Wu Tang clan, which makes him the de facto future leader of the united Eight Clans. He doesn't really cherish that role, though; in fact, he doesn't even see a real reason to fight until such time as the cult has actually acted against the Eight Clans in some way. When the battle is finally joined, Cho dishonors his master and his kinsmen by taking off with the enemy's elite assassin. He thinks the two of them can start a new life for themselves elsewhere, leave the fighting and the dying to others, and basically escape their obviously precarious situation - but there are always repercussions to such bold actions as this. This is especially true when you fail to honor a promise you made with utmost earnestness.

There is less fighting action than you might expect - but it's always a treat when Lien shows up. She literally makes mincemeat out of her enemies with nothing more than a strong rope; I mean, this girl is just wicked fast, and she would just as soon snap your head off as look at you - although, it must be said that Cho does manage to see more of her than any other man ever lived to tell about. Obviously, there is a romantic element to the story; it's a sort of Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers theme, except the Montagues and Capulets never went so far as to go around beheading each other. The romantic dimension is actually rather subtle, and any viewers who miss the full impact of the revelations toward the end may well wonder how this could be considered much of a love story at all.

Director Ronny Yu's The Bride With White Hair is a beautiful film, but I must admit that I felt it lacked a certain vitality; the picture always seem to be somewhat cloudy in some indistinct kind of way, making the print look older than it is (the film was released in 1993). Still, perhaps the real beauty of the film is its ability to succeed on multiple levels. Naturally, there's the obvious martial arts and romantic themes, but this movie also offers up an intriguing study of good and evil and, in particular, one's personal responsibility toward others on both sides of the conflict.

1 out of 5 stars The cast is totally wrong.......2005-12-23

If you are looking for Kiss Me Kill Me with Stella Stevens and Bruce Boxleitner, this is NOT IT. Both Blockbuster and Amazon have the wrong cast for this movie version. This KMKM is an Italian Fetish movie, not exactly what I was looking for. The KMKM version starring Boxleitner and Stevens has never been made into a retail version.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly cool "experimental" horror art film - a real cinematic find.......2005-12-22

This is not your typical horror movie by any stretch of the imagination. It is more likely to appeal to fans of Fellini's more extravagant works, of Antonioni or Nic Roeg. Plot involves a stylish young fashion photographer who attracts the attention of a creepily stylish witch (Carroll Baker looking like a beautiful reanimated corpse). Yes, the key word is STYLE. Director Corrado Farina is a director of the first order. His camera savors every image, intercut in a myriad of textures to create a fluid montage of erotic and disturbing imagery. Horror fans might find this an interesting curiosity but film lovers should appreciate it on a much higher level. Like Donald Cammell-Nic Roeg's "Performance" this film exploits the nature of cinema masterfully, transcending its purported genre. Its use of solarized desaturated stills predates the famous "Aha" video by two decades, and much more artfully. Farina sensuously assaults you with his imagery, moving from pop to Goth to pure art in the wink of an eye. If any of this sounds even vaguely tempting, dig up a copy and treat yourself to a slice of cinematic heaven. Sadly, like the equally brilliant and iconoclastic Donald Cammell, Farina seems to have been grossly under-appreciated in his time, yielding only a few films as his legacy.

3 out of 5 stars Kiss me, Kill me.......2005-08-09

While the movie was good. It wasn't the edition I was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars A creepily atmospheric Italian horror film.......2005-07-11

Italian horror movies invariably seem to have a special look, sound, and feeling of baroque creepiness that make them successful. I'm not so sure that Kiss Me, Kill Me (aka Baba Yaga, aka The Devil Witch aka Black Magic) is really that great of a movie, but its dark atmosphere makes it satisfyingly effective. Based to some degree on a dark comic strip, the movie's noticeably surreal quality is greatly enhanced by a haunting musical score as well as the use of grainy black and white pictures of events unfolding at certain critical times. Isabelle De Funes plays Valentina Rosselli, a photographer living in Milan. On her way home one night, she encounters a very strange lady who calls herself Baba Yaga (played by Carroll Baker). This stranger tells Valentina their meeting was predestined, and she quickly insinuates herself into the life of our protagonist. Baba Yaga, we quickly learn, is some type of witch, and she certainly looks the part in costume as well as appearance; her pasty complexion and almost-white eyebrows standing out in contrast to her red lipstick-coated mouth does make quite an impression. Valentina tries to go about her work, which involves photographing semi-nude women, but Baba Yaga gradually puts her under her spell. She has strange dreams; quite unusual things begin to happen when she takes pictures with a camera that Baba Yaga has fondled; a strange doll Baba Yaga gives her begins to seem like something more than a normal doll. The tension and suspense is carried along quite nicely throughout, but the conclusion falls a little short of making this film an unqualified success.

This is a movie best suited for adults because it does contain a fair bit of nudity, but the sex, violence, and gore is actually rather limited. Gory and erotic are not words I would use to characterize this film at all. In fact, there is essentially no blood to speak of, and the one scene of violence is not as extreme as it might first appear. Kiss Me, Kill Me generates its horror from the atmosphere it creates, and in this endeavor it is largely successful. In one very nice scene, Valentina watches an old silent movie about a golem, but the golem connection to the doll Valentina is given may be lost on some viewers lacking a foundation in old-fashioned horror. Still, though, the doll in and of itself is creepy enough to be effective. If you don't have an interest in horror at all, there is a good chance you won't enjoy Kiss Me, Kill Me. For horror aficionados, the movie stands ready to help meet your daily requirement of creepiness, but your rations of blood and gore must be obtained elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty nice ARTSY-FARTSY little flick.......2005-03-31

If you just wanna see a pretty cool little flick, then I recommend this movie. If you get this movie expecting to see a horror flick, then you will be disappointed. This movie is just plain hip. The acting in the film is pretty good, as well. And of course, this Euro-flick delivers a good bit of nudity for all you spankers out there.
The movie is based on an old Italian comic book about a photographer who has a weird spell put on her by a woman named Baba Yaga, a sort of voodoo gypsy. It's not much more than that, but it's still pretty hip by today's standards. The DVD offers a good bit of extras, too. Recommended.
