Ted Daniels (Cameron Mitchell), a ranch hand working for a rodeo, captures and trains a magnificent wild horse that he names Gallant Bess. During a rodeo, Ted is injured and becomes incapacitated. While he is recovering, Gallant Bess is stolen from him by the rodeo owner. Ted must decide whether to go after his beloved horse or stay and pursue the doctor's lovely daughter (Audrey Long) who is nursing him back to health.

This 1948 classic also stars Fuzzy Knight, James Millican, and John Harmon.

Every kid wants a Bess.......2006-12-24

I watched this movie so many times as a child, and it fueled my love of horses. It is partly responsible for all the "Bess's" I have enjoyed and for the mustang mare I still have. The film combines a Black Beauty theme with the old fashioned corny westerns that made us all want to be cowboy heroes. It shows a great horse at the mercy of the humans who care for her, hopefully teaching compassion for animals to young minds. "Bess" is a beautiful, well trained, entertaining horse, who upstages everyone else anyway. I thought this movie had disappeared long ago since it's hardly a box office hit and was delighted to find it again. Caution: may inflict the "horse bug" in impressionable viewers! :) The "other" Gallant Bess, based on a true war story was great also, but haven't located that one.

When Ted gets injured and incapacitated, Bess is stolen from him and he has to decide whether to pursue her - or to stay where he is a pursue the doctor's lovely daughter (Audrey Long) instead. Adventures of Gallant Bess is not to be confused with the more popular, better-remembered Gallant Bess, a movie that was released in 1947. This movie is an OK Western, but not the horse movie you may be hoping for (Gallant Bess, the other one, is about a soldier who finds a horse during WW2).

'Pied Piper Of Hamelin' (1957) is a family treat for all ages and for all holidays. First filmed in color as a Hallmark TV special, it is a masterful, musical re-telling of the legendary fairy tale using the beautiful mysterious, music of Edward Grieg with new lyrics. The cast is first-rate, with movie great Van Johnson brilliantly playing the strange and often frightening piper, as well as the kind school teacher Trueson, who is also the village concience. Legendary movie villain Claude Rains is absolutely wonderful as the clever, sneering, and corrupt lord mayor of Hamelin. Rains has a ball playing him like Prince John of 'Adventures Of Robin Hood' (1938) in retirement! He even does a comical, show-stopping song and dance! Jim Backus also appears as the King's messenger, and his comedy is sorely needed as this fairy tale goes dark in it's second half. One highlight of the film, is Van Johnson as the Pied Piper, leading the rats out of Hamelin to their deaths in the river. He is playing on his pipe the haunting melody of 'In The Hall Of The Mountain King' from Mr. Grieg's 'Peter Guint Suite' as the cleverly animated rats march to oblivion! Unlike the fairy tale, this 'Pied Piper Of Hamelin' has a happy ending with a lesson for everyone about greed, selfishness, and false pride. 'The Adventures of Gallant Bess' (1948) is another great family film here given a full length transfer! Ted Daniels, a ranch hand working for a rodeo, captures a magnificent wild horse that he tames and trains. As Ted is recovering from an accident that happened during a rodeo, the rodeo owner cheats him out of his horse. Ted must decide whether to pursue him and try to recover the horse, or whether to settle down with the doctor's daughter who is nursing him back to health.
