A corrosive study of the human nature!.......2005-09-19
The death of a cruel landlord (who represents a metaphor about the neglected Mr. Feudal of the ancient times) in a small Austrian village of the 1930's carries the seed of its own destruction. The identity of his murderer has no importance. The true concern is who will be the successful inheritor. But our landlord had a hidden Ace under his sleeve. His master move was to bequeath his farm to seven (the mythical number) his domains to seven laborers upon his death (Bitter and sinister punishment from the outer world). In this state of things this sudden and unexpected transformation of ancient peasants into land owners, the happiness (that would be the final result of the Socialist Utopian) never comes. Thomas Hobbes ' Leviatan reincarnates again and the conflicts within the groups as you guess will sprout again, proving once more the human nature obeys to an everlasting cycle: possession, inheritance, fight, envy, destruction, reconstruction from the ashes a little hope to mitigate the thirst and the destiny 's wheel will start over again to repeat the same story with different protagonists.
The lesson to learn is simple. The story is far from being a straight line. If you conceive it under that perspective, there will always be a space for the hope and best wishes. But if the story as the human life is a cycle, 8think in the famous Gauss normal curve) what can we expect once we have reached the inflexion point , the slope turns into negative slope?
A witty and brilliant essay.
"A poor wretch has a hard life everywhere.".......2005-09-08
"The Inheritors" is set in Austria before WWII. Hillinger, an unpleasant old farmer is found murdered. At the reading of the will, held in a local tavern, the village gathers to hear the division of the spoils. Everyone is shocked to learn that the farmer has left his property to the ten peasants who work the land. The peasants are a hodgepodge crew managed by a foreman (Tilo Pruckner). Local landowner, Danninger (Ulrich Wildgruber) approaches the foreman and offers to buy the land. Seven of the peasants--headed by Lukas (Simon Schwarz)--refuse to sell and decide to stay and farm the land themselves.
While the film is essentially dark and bleak, there are light moments (the insults written in the will, for example) that alleviate the sense of hopelessness and encroaching doom. There are also moments of absurdity (the elephant) that may or may not appeal to the viewer. The story also involves a predictable subplot. Clearly the film is an allegory--with the innocent and the powerless attempting to fight political institutions. Ultimately, the film is rather painful to watch, and the suffering spread across the screen diminishes the film's Marxist message. A film with a political message must leave the viewer with something other than depression at its conclusion. In German with English subtitles--displacedhuman
The film brought to life the hard life of peasants.......2004-01-26
This film is set in rural Austria and tells the story of what happens when a cruel farmer is murdered and it is discovered that he has bequeathed his farm to his workers. Of course there's conflict, lots of conflict. The other farmers in the area hate them and force them to pay high taxes to keep the land. There are conflicts between the seven peasants themselves who have never owned anything in their lives. And there's a mysterious woman with a secret who's going to be executed for murdering the farmer.
This film brought to light how hard the life of a peasant was. They worked seven days a week at backbreaking labor and were virtual slaves to the farmer. It was a horrible life compared to that of the farmers around them. In German, with English subtitles, the film is in color but it may as well been in black and white because the story is such a dark and dismal one. There's a bit of humor but it does nothing but underscore the horrible lives that these people led. Of course there's a ray of hope when they inherit the land, but they are naive to think that their culture would let them live in peace.
The tale is centered around a young man named Lukas who romances the three young women peasant women on the farm, most notably Emily, who is a fiery and outspoken advocate of their land ownership. There's also another young man, an older woman and a stable boy on the farm and each is well developed with distinctive personalities. There's a lot of violence and some very sad moments. I was depressed throughout. This has nothing to do with the quality of the film which dealt with some important themes.
I liked It.......2002-03-15
I'm sorry to see this film derided so much, although not superb....it isn't THAT bad.
The plot---A mean farmer who delights in humiliating the people who work his farm, is murdered...(the murderer, later is revealed) They are amazed when the farm is willed to them, and they undertake it. Although they aren't perfect, and they have and develop problems with each other. Lukas and Emmy are involved with each other, and Severin is a very quiet young man, who always looks in a state of disarray, especially his hair.
The question of why the farm is left to them, is puzzling, but that is also revealed... Their biggest problem is the cruel villagers, who don't like the fact that the land was left to them, and that they refuse to sell it....it ends tragically, for everyone, but I felt a little hopeful with the last scene of Severin and Emmy.
I think it should also be cautioned, that it does contain a rape near the end...
Over all...not bad....I've seen it twice, I've bought it, and will watch it again..
Not superb, but pretty good.......2001-04-13
This film is certainly worthy of more than one star, but it is not one of the greatest movies ever. Its just a pretty good movie (better than most mainstream Hollywood productions); I gave it 4 stars rather than 3 because I like originality. However, I could have done without the depression that is sure to set in upon completion of the movie. It has very good characters with complex composition (i.e. neither saints nor sinners, but real people with both good and bad qualities). One thing I liked in particular was that it was not too wordy; there are plenty of scenes that let the viewer think and take in unspoken, visual cues. All in all, this was a good movie worthy of viewing, but there are other movies I would recommend first.
