Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamorous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted color cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholson's nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time. --Anne Hurley

Chinatown.......2007-07-03
Cynical, brooding, and knotted with mystery, Polanski's "Chinatown" is not just one of the best films ever made about the City of Angels, earning a dozen Oscar nominations--it's also one of the most superbly crafted, post-`40s noirs you'll ever see. The cast, of course, can't be beat: Dunaway is at once jittery, seductive and impenetrable, while Jack is at the top of his game as the Chandleresque former cop Jake. Real-life legendary director John Huston also delivers a titanic performance as the arrogant Cross. Watch for Polanski himself as a knife-wielding thug with a grudge against nosy people.
Twists & Turns.......2007-06-07
"Chinatown" is an amazing piece of film that grows richer as it grows older. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, only winning one for Robert Towne's Best Original Screenplay. John Alonzo, who was nominated for Best Cinematography, sets a sheen & sparkle to the vintage look of the film. The soundtrack is also brilliant. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to "The Godfather Part II."
While "Chinatown" did not do well @ the Oscars, it was the Golden Globe winner for Best Drama and also brought Roman Polanski a Best Director Golden Globe award. Roman Polanski has done many classics including his other Oscar nominations as Best Director for Rosemary's Baby & "Tess" to his 2002 Oscar win for The Pianist. "Chinatown's detractors say that the pacing is slow, but I find that it builds intensity as each piece of the puzzle is revealed and somehow doesn't fit or indicates that there is more to the puzzle.
As Jake "J.J." Gittes, Jack Nicholson has never been better. His demeanor that leads you to think he never takes anything seriously is contained, with just enough wiseacre to make him endearing. Nicholson brought home the Golden Globe as Best Actor but lost the Oscar to surprise winner Art Carney for Harry and Tonto in a field that also had Al Pacino for "Godfather Part II," Dustin Hoffman for "Lenny" & "Albert Finney in "Murder on the Orient Express." As Gittes, we watch Nicholson twist and squirm. The scene where Roman Polanski slits Gittes' nose is brutal and remains emphasized as Nicholson plays following scenes with a big bandage on the middle of his face.
Faye Dunaway received her second Oscar nomination for this film. Her performance is incredibly controlled, but throbbing with the underlying secrets of her past and conditioned by the opulence of her wealth. She lost the Oscar to Ellen Burstyn for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.
The film's large cast is peppered with faces we had seen or later saw frequently. Darrell Zwerling whose career spanned the decade was also seen in "High Anxiety," "Grease" & "Capricorn One." As Dunaway's husband Hollis, he remains bespectacled & without dialogue for much of the picture until his character's tragic demise. John Huston's legendary career is reflected in the shadow of his presence on screen as the family patriarch Noah Cross. Perry Lopez plays detective Lou Escobar in his most memorable film. John Hillerman, who would play prominently on TV from 1980-1988 in "Magnum P.I.," plays Yelburton, the assistant water commissioner. Diane Ladd plays Ida Sessions, the fake Mrs. Mulray. Ladd picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" that same year & was later nominated for "Wild at Heart" in 1990 and "Rambling Rose" in 1991. Burt Young who would be Oscar nominated for his character Paulie in "Rocky" in 1976 plays Curly who Gittes helps with marital matters. James Hong who played prominently in 1994's film The Shadow appears stoically as Mrs. Mulray's butler. "Chinatown" picks us up and carries us through to the ending, surprising with twists & turns. It is classic cinema. Bravo!

You're going to spend the majority of this movie wondering why it has the title it does and I'm not going to spoil it for you by mentioning it, but what I will say is that it has one of the great surprise endings in the history of Hollywood. The plot is outstanding and it's hard to tell where its going based on the first hour alone. Nicholson is superlative in the role of J.J. Gittes. His performance is nearly as good as Bogart's was in The Maltese Falcon. Dunaway and Houston are outstanding as well. Chinatown is every bit as entertaining as it is excellent.

YOU CAN'T GO WONG WITH THIS SET.......2007-04-28
The great Boris Karloff stars in five late 30's as the well educated oriental sleuth Mr. Wong. Unlike many of the stereotypes (Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto), this movie is basically devoid of pidgeon English with a minimal of racial slurs. Karloff's Wong is smart and elegant. Grant Withers co-stars as the detective who always asks Wong for assistance with his cases. The series became more lively in the last three outings beginning with "Mr. Wong In Chinatown" with the edition of Marjorie Reynolds, as a nosy reporter and sometimes girlfriend of of Withers. Their bickering and snappy one liners are terrific and add a lightness and humor to this dark genre.
The transfer and qualty are very good but too expensive. None of these flicks run longer than 70 minutes and the 6th movie does not star Boris Karloff. Key Luke plays Mr. Wong in "Phantom Over Chinatown" with Grant Withers reprising his role. It is hard to determine if this is a relative of the original Mr. Wong or a "younger" Mr. Wong. Further explanation is needed as this becomes a bit confusing and convolutes the sometimes weak plot.
The Karloff series is the best entry in oriental sleuth genre. It is a shame he became bored with it and left in 1940. Don't confuse this with the poor Bela Lugosi "The Mysterious Mr. Wong". This film has nothing to do with the famous detective series and is filled with insulting ethnic stereotypes and slurs.
If you can afford the set, it is recommended. It's a winner.
Fairly Enjoyable.......2004-12-29
Monogram's 'Mr. Wong' series was apparently done as a rip-off of Fox's Charlie Chan series. Like those films, Mr. Wong featured a wise Oriental detective. Oh...and they also both starred non-Asians. Boris Karloff, I think we can all agree, was just about the least Chinese person in the entire known Universe, but his gentlemanly performance gave the Mr. Wong series a bit of dignity and class. The films on their own are mildly enjoyable potboilers, instantly forgettable but entertaining while playing. This two-disc DVD set gathers the six Mr. Wong films: "Mr. Wong, Detective," "The Mysterious Mr. Wong," "Mr. Wong in Chinatown," "The Fatal Hour," "Doomed to Die," and "The Phantom of Chinatown" (starring Charlie Chan's 'number one son,' Keye Luke, as a young Mr. Wong). "Mr. Wong Detective" is the best. "Phantom of Chinatown" is easily the worst - its jaw dropping political incorectness is hard to take.
The DVD from Roan Group has the films in just about the best condition you'll probably find them in. There are still scratches and plenty of grain, but overall the image is quite sharp and as clear as you could expect. Sound isn't great, but that probably has to do with the sub-par and neglected source materials. The biggest disappointment of the set is that there are no extras whatsoever - some liner notes, production notes, or a photo gallery are all I ask for.
OVERPRICED.......2004-07-13
This set is good, but not worth what Amazon is charging. At the Big O I paid a quarter of this price. In fact, all the Roan titles the Big O carries are at a significant discount from Amazon.
Mr Wong returns.......2004-06-29
Get this set if you are a fan of Mr Wong! IMHO the series got better as it went on. Mr Wong Detective is the first entry in the series and it's enjoyable, but I thought things got even better after that one. I enjoyed each entry. Karloff is fantastic in the first five films. The sixth entry in the series stars Keye Luke who plays a younger version of the character. I loved that idea! Luke is wonderful. Some claim that Luke's entry doesn't fit the series, but that's not so. It's flashback to the first case Wong and Street ever worked on. That idea really made for great viewing. Grant Withers may not look younger as Street, but he is the perfect man for that role. The younger Wong really brings out the best in him. This is a great set for Wong fans. All six Mr Wong movies are a delight.
Exciting.......2003-06-26
It's exciting to have the entire Mr. Wong series on one DVD. They're all very good movies.
Boris Karloff, although not convincing as a Chinese detective, is a graceful performer as always. The real star of 3 of the movies is Marjorie Reynolds as reporter Roberta Logan. She shows style and great wit. She was known later as the wife in the television series The Life of Riley. Keye Luke in the 6th and last film as Mr. Wong is a great treat, as well.
If you're a fan of the old detective movies such as Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto, these are knock-off versions, but entertaining in their own right. I highly recommend this DVD set.

Description
Meet Olga, a woman who "possessed a mind so warped she made sadism a full-time business!" In the first of the series, Olga uses pot parties and comic-book violence to turn Gigi Darlene and other female captives into her White Slaves of Chinatown. But Olga has her tender side too and, in the mood for romance, selects an occasional slave for a little loving: "The disease called Olga cannot be fought!" And after relocating to New Jersey, Olga's House of Shame is open for business! With the help of her malignant brother and a sweet-faced victim-turned-protege, Olga runs a crime syndicate while gleefully engaging in unhealthy extracurricular activities in this, the most outrageous of the series. Finally things take a bizarre turn with the most obscure Olga of them all, Olga's Dance Hall Girls, in which a new brat-faced Olga recruits suburban housewives as "hostesses" for a dance hall which is really just a front for -- are you ready? -- a satanic cult! Ouch! For maximum effect, view while shackled.

Fast forward review.......2004-06-14
Ah yes, Olga. One of the most cheesy set of flicks ever made. We're talking no sound track at all, just some added-on narration and other effects, and no color. There were a lot of these "roughies" made, but these are some of the most famous.
I'd stick to "House of Shame", if you're interested in sex sleaze. We got topless babes tied to trees and fake whipped, but not too bad (hey, considering that stuff coming out of eastern europe these days, the "fake" is a necessary comment). We got some paddling through mesh hose, and especially a soldering iron scene that actually approaches the kind of realism that Franco achieves. OK, that means it's ridiculous, but you gotta have some cred for even having a soldering iron scene, eh?
There's also some pretty silly scenes involving Olga threatening models with strange tools and implements that don't really look very effective and a lot of plot, if you call silent movie footage with a narrator "plot". Topless is all the nudity you can expect, but it does show the goods. You could probably extract a clip or two here for old times sake. Two stars for being famous and actually having some reason for being notorious.
''Olga'', back and better than ever!.......2003-06-19
This fabulous new release from the good folk at Something Weird Video presents three of the infamous "Olga" films, complete and uncut, with a few choice extras.
For maximum effect, you should watch the movies in chronological order, as follows...
WHITE SLAVES OF CHINATOWN - Meet Olga Petroff (Audrey Campbell). She is a hard-hearted woman with a penchant for torture and sin. Olga runs a prostitution ring, and also has shares in an opium sydicate. Watch as Olga 'disciplines' her girls in outlandish torture methods! Keep an eye out Gigi Darlene (BAD GIRLS GO TO HELL) who plays one of Olga's lovelies.
OLGA'S HOUSE OF SHAME - Olga relocates her business to an abandoned mill in upstate New York. Joining Olga is her corrupt brother Nick (W.B. Parker) and the lovely Elaine (Alice Davis, aka Alice Linville). When the beautiful Nadja (Ella Daphne) tries to destroy Olga's empire, there's hell to pay as Olga fights back with all her fury.
OLGA'S DANCE HALL GIRLS - Olga (now played by Lucy Eldredge) sets up 'housekeeping' in the suburbs, and recruits all the able-bodied housewives in the area for her new business, which is just a front for a weird satatnic cult, complete with Olga as the 'High Priestess'!. Featuring appearances by Larry Hunter, Hattie Felder and Moia Gifford.
The extra features include the short-subject "Audrey Campbell: Art Lover" which also features her husband, director Byron Mabe (THE HEAD MISTRESS). There's also the "Olga" exerpt from MONDO OSCENITA, trailers for the films featured on the disc and a tantalising exerpt from the 'lost' "Olga" film, MADAME OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR (which starred W.B. Parker and Alice Linville reprising their roles of Nick and Elaine!).
With Synapse set to release the missing "Olga" film (OLGA'S GIRLS) complete with a commentary by no less than Audrey Campbell herself later this year, fans will have to wait a while longer to complete their collection.
I also recommend the following Something Weird double-features: "Sinderella and the Golden Bra/Goldilocks and the Three Bares", "The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill/The Head Mistress", "Bad Girls Go to Hell/Another Day Another Man" and "The Violent Years/Girl Gang".

The bloody story of an assassin who silently weeps for his victims, Crying Freeman began as a 1986 manga by Kazuo Koike and Ryoichi Ikegami. In addition to this six-part OVA, the story has been filmed twice in live action. The leaders of the Chinese Mafia known as the 108 Dragons brainwash ceramicist Yoh Hinamura and transform him into the ultimate assassin. Virginal artist Emu Hino witnesses a killing by Yoh, but when he comes to murder her, she seduces him and wins his heart. Defying the syndicate, he refuses to give her up. Emu and Yoh subsequently become the bosses of the 108 Dragons. They run the organization--whose illegal activities are tactfully glossed over--on the principles of honor and absolute loyalty extolled in live-action Yakuza movies.
Like true love, the course of mob business seldom runs smoothly, and the body count for the entire series runs into the thousands. Hit men and women are dispatched with knives, throwing knives, swords, karate chops, pistols, machine guns, grenades, missiles, and electricity. As the plot grows more baroque, the animation grows more limited. After a certain point, the images of knives penetrating skulls, full-body tattoos, bare breasts, and awkwardly animated sexual encounters become monotonous, but Crying Freeman is definitely not for the squeamish or prudish. (Rated 17 and older, but more appropriate for 18 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, rape, torture, ethnic stereotypes, extensive nudity, explicit sexual situations) --Charles Solomon
Description
A bold kidnapping foreshadows a desperate plan by the lusty female leader of a deadly army of mercenaries. It is simple: transform Freeman - the enigmatic leader of the powerful crime syndicate The 108 Dragons - into a mindless "killing machine" fueled by desire and self-indulgence. Once again Freeman is forced to fight for his life, this time against combat-hardened "gladiators." Later, Freeman must ferret out a traitor bent on destroying The 108 Dragons. Freeman's final pulse-pounding battle is bracketed by a bittersweet journey of enlightenment punctuated by vice, violence and vengeance. Contains 2 complete episodes!

Crying Freeman - - Live action film.......2007-03-27
I am a fan of the jap-animation of crying freeman and I have to say that the live action film did not disappoint me. the martial arts and gun fighting was awesome. It followed the animation and i thought the people playing the characters did a very good job - - especially Mark Dacascos who protrayed Yoh/Freeman. In case your wondering he played the bad guy in Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet Li - - and they have a really cool face off at the end of the movie.
I recommend Crying Freeman to people who are hardcore fans of the series. If you're just looking to see some kung fu - - and you will see it in this movie, but then you'd have to put up with the few in between slow parts as well - - for example, when Yoh does a flashback to explain how he became Crying Freeman.
I know that this film is not availbe in the U.S. but i think it's worth looking for. I tried to find it in video stores but couldn't. Therefore i turned to ebay to buy a copy. You can get a copy relatively cheap - - but make sure that it's in english audio and/or have english subtitles.
I hope this review was helpful and enjoy the movie!!
Stylish, Fast and Furious... Christophe Gans's style !.......2007-03-07
I watched the feature film at a cinema twice and the action sequences had me stunned. The fight choreography is top notch with the slow motion shots. The opening title sequence is also artistically cool. What makes this movie stands out from the rest of the genre is Christophe Gans's (BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF) visually attractive directing during the fight scenes, which captures a comic style of story telling. The most evident of this is in the climax of the film, when the Freeman faces off dozens of his assailants single-handedly with a samurai.
The story involves a war between two rival Japanese Yakuzas. The Freeman, who is a hitman raised by one of the rival gangs, is assigned to wipe out the leader of the other gang. Problem arises when an innocent bystander- a beautiful woman- witnesses the killings. He does not kill her so the plot thickens... with a lot of samurai blood shed and flying bullets, wraps in stylish action !
Mark Dacascos has an athletic physique and is good looking. He can perform realistic fightings too. Having starred in such films as DOUBLE DRAGON, THE REDEMPTION, ONLY THE STRONG, and SABOTAGE, he has proved this to be one of his better efforts.
Unfortunately this movie is not available on dvd in the U.S. The theatrical release employs the DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL and SDDS mix and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I am really looking forward to adding this into my collection. This is one stylish action flick that allows repeated viewings.
REVIEWING LIVE ACTION MOVIE WITH MARK DACASCOS.......2007-02-13
The version I am reviewing is from JY and it is a bare bones DVD. The DVD cover has Mark's face on it with a tear in his eye and there is a sword partly unsheathed covering the middle of his face. The only reason I point this out is because Amazon has decided to group the Crying Freeman Collection and the live action movie together and they seem to think it is the same thing. I have never seen the anime, never even heard of it. Amazon has a lot of problems seperating movies that have similar titles and it can be very irritating, but 1 of these is a movie and 1 is a cartoon! It shouldn't be too hard to seperate.
Marc Dacoscos plays the Crying Freeman, a hitman for the The Sons of the Dragons who are a group of people that are considered ancient protectors of China. The backstory is pretty deep going into how Dacoscos became this special type of hitman. I don't like to give away any major parts of movies but don't expect this to be a normal drama or something. That is all I can say. It is a love story at heart, and while it is sort of a weird romance-drama, it is still a good stylish film with an engaging story and plenty of action. I enjoyed it very much.
The action is good. It is mainly shoutouts but there is 1 very good extended action scene where Dacoscos gets to show off his awesome athletic skills. I rate this a 3.5/5.
The DVD I have says it is a region 3 on the back. This DVD played in both region 1 DVD players I tried, it played on my region 3 player, and it played on my all-region player. The DVD is presented in widescreen and other than some coloring issues on the picture, it is good picture quality. Distributor is called JY. It says it has DTS but I don't have that capability. The regular 5.1 sound in English is very good. The subtitles are well written and you will need to rewind and turn them on a few times to follow the story. You will see what I mean.
Think James Bond mixed in with a little Hentai........2006-05-12
I really had big expectations going into this series. Reading the other reviews on here I thought that I was in for something fanstastic, but my expectations were not met.
Crying Freeman starts off with a lot of promise. There's a mysterious charachter, a love connection, and then a destiny met-- all things that give the series a strong foundation. After the initial introduction to the story and main charachters, the series falls apart. Enter killing after killing, mission after mission that seem to lead to absolutely nowhere, sensless nudity, and you get an absolutely rediculous and humerous plot.
Before I watched this series, one thing that a reviewer said stuck into my mind "the charachters seem to drop their clothes for no reason." Boy was he right. The amount of nudity in this series gets so over the top that you have to wonder why it was put in. Weere the producers looking for a crime-drama or were they looking for a hentai(anime porn)? The amount of times that the charachters just casually take their clothes off makes one wonder.
The sketching? hmmm, Crying Freeman is an early 90's anime so you can't expect it to have the level of excellence of today, but some of the charachter sketches are very amatueristic. There is one scene in particular that will make you laugh.. It's a certain decapitation scene in the latter part of this movie--look out for how the blood spurts lol.
All in all, Crying Freeman has too many flaws. There is no build up of the charachter Freeman. In the beginning of the movie, he talks about leaving Japan and moving on with his wife, yet, as the story progresses he remains a brute killer. Also, where exactly does his story lead to? The only thing that occurs in this movie is a bunch of run ins with rivals and a bunch of deaths. Where is the progression of the charachters and their lives? There's none. Despite it's shortcommings, Crying Freeman is a VERY entertaining anime. The death scenes are artsy and flashy, and the women (yes, I actually got turned on by these anime women--hard to believe) and sex scenes that they're involved in are pretty steamy.
I'd say to give this one a shot. Don't go in expecting some Godfather bit, though. Just approach it with an open mind and heart.
NOT ANIME!!!.......2006-05-05
This is the LIVE ACTION VERSION of the Crying Freeman anime. This is a truly well done masterpeice of a film. Mark Dacasca's potrayed The Freeman perfectly. This by far one of the best if not the best live action adaption of an anime film. But seriously folks, No film is worth 99 dollars. I don't care if it is the film to end all films. They will sooner or later put this on DVD for 20 dollars.

Boris Karloff at his humble best!.......2007-01-04
Boris Karloff must have been one of the nicest gentlemen in Hollywood during these early crazy days. It's so wonderful to see him in less makeup and not having to speak in a fractured Chinese accent. His character is very kind and very intelligent. I would like to find some of the old "Collier's" magazine stories that the movies were based on to see how they adapted the character to film. The movies were also made with well-spoken Chinese actors, only a few of the men servants spoke with a fratured English, but I work with many heavy accented folks who have lived in the US for over 40 years. The characters weren't too drippy and the plot line was plausible. The times didn't call for lots of gore, so you won't see blood oozing all over as in todays films. I intend to complete the "Mr. Wong" series as soon as I can.
A Haunting Mr. Wong!.......2004-07-02
This is a terrific DVD for the atmosphere, the clever Mr. Wong and the great transfer. This is a B picture, to be sure, shot on a budget, but its great fun as Mr. Wong solves his case. The transfer is very good considering there is no restoration. The sound is very good as well. I love this series and Boris is the man to play the character.
loved it.......2004-06-29
I have found these Mr Wong movies very addictive! I'm glad Alpha has made these available! Mr Wong In Chinatown isn't the best mystery in the series, but it is still one of my favorites of the series. This one is a little stranger that other entries. Very unusual!
Mr. Wong searches for the murderer of Princess Lin Hwa.......2001-08-02
This film is third of Boris Karloff's turns as the Chinese detective James Lee Wong. Princess Lin Hwa (Lotus Long) visits Mr. Wong for help and is killed by a poisoned arrow. This time Mr. Wong is joined not only by Captain Street (Grant Withers) but the policeman's fiance, reporter Bobby Logan (Marjorie Reynolds). When the trio check out the apartment of the princess they find her maid murdered and the only witness a mute dwarf (Angelo Rosita) who suddenly disappears. This is a below average mystery which gives Karloff very little to do besides maintain his unruffled demeanor. The last reel picks up a bit as Mr. Wong falls into the hands of the murderer and has to be rescued by his companions. Like the other films in this series, this 1939 film was directed by William Nigh and based on the stories of Hugh Wiley.

another enjoyable Wong mystery.......2004-08-25
Keye Luke stepped in and played Mr Wong in this entry of the series. Boris Karloff had done a great job playing Wong in the other five Wong movies and this one is more of a "prequel" with Luke in fine form as the young Mr Wong. Good stuff!
Keye Luke is wonderful as young Wong.......2004-06-29
The Mr Wong series has always been a source of great fun for me. Karloff played Wong in five films: Mr Wong Detective, Mystery of Mr Wong, Mr Wong In Chinatown, The Fatal Hour, and Doomed To Die. Keye Luke replaced Karloff as Wong in a prequel which told how Wong first became a solver of crimes. It's also the first meeting of Mr Wong and Police Captain Street. The actor who played Street in all six Wong films doesn't look younger in this one, but I'm glad they didn't replace him with a younger actor. His chemistry with Luke is fantastic. The whole prequel idea brings new energy to this entry. It's great to see Wong and Street meet and become friends as they work on the case together. This is an enjoyable little gem.
