5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Documentaries EVER by the History Channel.......2007-05-25

The History Channel has presented a mixed of bad and good documentaries, but the "Last Stand of the 300" is definitely one of the best that they've ever produced! I wholeheartedly agree with previous reviewers that this is an excellent and well-researched documentary about the Battle of Thermopylae--one of history's most famous last stands of all-time.

The overall presentation of this epic battle is superb. Great visuals, music, dramatic reenactments, and knowledgeable scholars provide a very enlightening and fascinating account of the events preceding and following the 3-day battle at Thermopylae. The battle itself is examined and analyzed in meticulous detail--military tactics and strategies discussed from both sides of the war (land and sea).

As reviewer, Raffaele Vardavas mentioned, this documentary does resemble a little like the movie "300," which gives it a more appealing and cinematic look. The fighting sequences--especially during the last stand--are wonderfully portrayed.

The performance of the 300 Spartans--including the 700 Thespian soldiers--has been hailed as an outstanding example of courage against insurmountable odds. Among the Greeks, the Spartan defenders were the 'bravest of the brave' and their enormous sacrifice helped saved the future of Greece and unknowningly "altered the course of Western civilization." As one of the world's greatest and most symbolic events in history, this DVD is a must-have for all!

(Note: I have the PBS DVD of The Spartans, and also think this one is NOT as exciting to watch. Instead, the PBS presentation feels like a tedious 3-hour lecture in a history class. "Last Stand...300" is way better!!! Don't hesitate to buy).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD on ancient Greece. .......2007-05-22

Fantastic DVD on Thermopylae and Spartan history. Very well researched and presented. This is the ONLY DVD I have ever seen (using real people) that actually have them keep the phalanx formation. They mention the Spartan agoge and delve quit deeply into the agoge system and Spartan way of life. This is an excellent summarie of Spartan life style. It also covers the Persian side and tells us how the amazing Persian invasion came about, how the crossed the hellespont, how Xerxes was raised, etc. it also addresses all the other city states and battle tactics and takes you through to the conclusion of the battle and the ultimate conclusion of the Greek/Persian wars. (something that my Greek history teacher failed to do :() It also breifly goes over marathon which is nice. The DVD is fun and entertaining. Well worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars It was awesome.......2007-05-21

I watched this the very first time a few months ago, and then again over the weekend. It only got better. This is the REAL story told historians about the battle at Thermopylae. Now I want to see Hollywood's version "300" now that they've made it into a blockbuster. I hope they stick to the facts and don't make this great moment in history a joke. Regardless, I'm buying the history's channel DVD. It was excelelnt

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Fantastic.......2007-03-31

They showed this documentary on the History channel to accompany the release of the movie 300.

In contrast to the movie 300 (which was ok -see my review) this documentary is excellent. It is really a movie-like documentary with a lot of action.

Graphically it resembles a little the movie 300 since it uses a lot of computer graphics and non-realistic red looking skies. However, here Persians really look like Persians.

The content is excellent. Although I have read about the battle of Thermopylae from many different sources, I learned about things I did not know before and gained a more detail knowledge. However, like in the movie 300 here again Leonidas seems to be much younger than he really was by 480BC.

What I particularly liked was that the documentary focused both on the land battle of the Spartans and sea battle of the Athenian fleet. This really showed how brilliant and well coordinated the Allied Greek strategy was. Most other sources just focus on the land battle and pay minor attention to what happened in the flanking sea. The mastermind Themistocles is well represented and a decent length of the documentary is dedicated to him.

The Spartans and their society are accurately represented. They were not fighting for a new era of freedom which was at the time being brought forward by Athenian democracy. They were fighting to preserve their own, non-free un-democratic system and were hostile to the spread of democracy to other Greek city states. However, their last stand was not solely to seek "a beautiful death" but instead to cover the retreat of their fellow allied soldiers. Maybe, also to give an example from which the allied Greeks would stay united against the Persians for the sake of their sacrifice.

The sound tracks that accompany the scenes are excellent. However, they could have used them more often and they could have raised the volume a little too.

I enjoyed watching this documentary even more than the other two excellent documentaries on the Spartans (one from the History channel and the other by PBS).

Highly - I repeat highly recommended - to people interested in ancient history and battle strategies and warfare.

Tom Selleck shows a harder side of his persona as a disillusioned Confederate who returns home in the waning days of the Civil War in this adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. His wife, Suzy Amis, isn't ready to forgive him for leaving his family behind for the "adventure" of war, and his children hardly remember him. Haunted by his actions in the war and caught in a power struggle in the Arizona territory, Selleck's soul-scarred survivor makes a last stand to protect the only thing left that matters to him--his homestead and his family. The film has its share of gunfights, showdowns, conspiracies, and Civil War rivalries, and even a runaway stagecoach, but its power lies in the somber exploration of how misunderstandings and conflicts tear at a marriage during such a volatile time, when ideals are set against duty to family. Director Dick Lowry's lean style makes the most of the gorgeous landscapes, and he creates a strong dramatic tension in the bubbling undercurrent between Selleck, who leaves behind the jovial character of his Louis L'Amour Westerns for a man hardened and embittered by war, and Amis, an excellent actress who brings to life a woman who shoots, speaks her mind, and harbors resentment just as well as any brooding male hero. Keith and David Carradine costar as Union wranglers who hold a grudge against the Confederate veteran. One of the most mature TV Westerns ever made. --Sean Axmaker

Tom Selleck rides into Western adventure in grand, gritty style as Paul Cable in Last Stand at Saber River, from the novel by Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty, Out of Sight Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars tom selleck rides again.......2007-06-19

my husband a big western lover really liked this film. in typical tom selleck fashion he leaves the civil war after witnessing a massacar of innocents. the resulting story will please ater fans.

5 out of 5 stars Last Stand at Saber River.......2007-05-12

It is an outstanding movie. It goes back to what we grew up with. A hero who is fighting against odds, but wins out in the end. Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott are the top western "story tellers" of our time. You can tell they love it.

5 out of 5 stars Last Stand at Saber River.......2007-02-14

The movie was excellent and is typical of a Tom Selleck Western. It's to bad he is type-cast as Magnum PI, because he is a great portrayer of the Westerns and I would love to see him star in more of them.

4 out of 5 stars The first of Tom Selleck's excellent TNT Westerns.......2006-11-04

"Last Stand at Saber River" was the first of three excellent Westerns that Tom Selleck made for TNT between 1997 and 2003 (and I'm still hoping there'll be at least a fourth one some day). Selleck has starred in five made-for-TV Westerns total, three of which are based on Louis L'Amour stories. This one, however, is based on a book by Elmore Leonard, and the difference is obvious in both the lack of idealism and in the extreme violence.

Selleck is Paul Cable, a Confederate cavalryman who has come home from the Civil War (only slightly) early. He knows the war is lost for the South, he is worn out, and he only wants to take his family back to their homestead in Arizona to live a normal life. His wife, who was told that he was dead, is less than thrilled to have him back home because she is resentful that he left to fight in the war in the first place. Suzy Amis does an excellent job as Martha Cable. She is not the stereotypical beauty who runs around in a bustle under fancy dresses. She is a tough frontierswoman who has experienced many hardships and gets her husband out of some tight spots as the movie progresses.

While the majority of the movie is good at depicting the divisions between North and South that caused the Civil War and which the Civil War then exacerbated, the subplot of the inner struggles that Paul and Martha Cable face is far more interesting. It's a great movie until the end, when we get the additional time-worn subplot of a Confederate soldier who just can't give up the Lost Cause. No, it's not Selleck's character who has this problem, but Selleck already had covered this territory in 1982's "The Shadow Riders" (though it wasn't his character who wanted to keep fighting in that movie either); John Wayne's "The Undefeated" is another well-known film with the Lost Cause plotline.

In spite of the needlessly melodramatic ending, this is a strong Western. Selleck and TNT kept getting better and better with "Crossfire Trail" and "Monte Walsh". Check out all three, and you'll join me in wishing for number four.

5 out of 5 stars Well I'll Bow!...........2006-06-26

Tom Selleck takes on a serious role in this made for TV western. He stars as Confederate soldier Paul Cable, realizing the war is lost, returning to find his wife and family...hoping to pick up the pieces of a life he left behind. His wife Martha(Suzy Amis) isn't so happy to see him..she had thought him long dead..and was trying to get on with her life. With family, daughter Clare and son Davis(Haley Joel Osment), they leave Martha's father(Harry Carey Jr.) in Texas and head for Arizona and their ranch home. Upon arriving in Arizona, they find that the Union sympathizers(Keith and David Carradine) have confiscated their land..everyone still thinking he was dead. This requires them to fight for their home and for their acceptance in the rebuilding of life after the Civil War.

This is a well put together movie with good continuity. Not only does it have the western action but it also effectively shows the rebuilding of the marriage relationship between Cable and his wife. Susy Amis does a great job in portraying a wife that is ready to make her stand for family and home. Selleck puts in one of his better performances and shows that he can seriously act. Well worth adding to any western collection.

Description

An engrossing drama of a luxury ship that goes down at sea, and the inner turmoil that the crew and passengers face. The Last Voyage (1960) tells the story of an aged ocean liner, SS Claridon that meets destruction in the Pacific Ocean. Dorothy Malone and Robert Stack portray Laurie and Cliff Henderson, who are relocating to Tokyo, Japan. The ship's faulty boilers explode, and Laurie is trapped in their stateroom by wreckage. The film primarily deals with Cliff trying to free his wife and daughter (Tammy Marihugh) from their wrecked stateroom before the ship sinks. George Sanders also stars as Captain Robert Adams, Edmond O'Brien as Second Engineer Walsh, and Woody Strode as Hank Lawson, a crewman who helps rescue the endangered couple. Captain Adams is portrayed as a rather arrogant and clueless man who likes to impress his passengers and intimidate his crew and officers. The film begins with a fire in the second-class dining room, a fact Captain Adams keeps hidden from the passengers. Second Engineer Walsh lost his father on the RMS Titanic, and has a premonition that the Claridon is an unsafe ship.

4 out of 5 stars More Here Than Meets The Eye..........2006-12-08

Disaster movies from this era are, in general, fairly forgettable, but "The Last Voyage" rises above the norm in several ways. The stars of this film are well cast with Robert Stack in fine form as the heroic husband out to save his wife, George Sanders excelling as Captain Robert Adams, and Dorothy Malone doing a generally good (though occasionally over the top) job as the imperiled heroine. Stack and Malone had worked together before, and have an excellent onscreen chemistry. While football star turned actor Woody Strode does an excellent job as a selfless crewman, the downside to the casting was Tammy Marihugh who played the daughter of Stack and Malone, and who is one of the most shrill and annoying child actors in memory. I gave this film four stars, and a good part of the reason it didn't get five was due to that one piece of casting.

The real star of the film, of course, was the "S.S. Claridon" which sank due to a fire, boiler explosion, and aged bulkheads. Most movies from the 1960s have poor special effects, but "The Last Voyage" is different because there are no real special effects here. The actual star of the film turns out to be no other than the beautiful art deco French Line ship, the "Ile de France," a ship more famous than most people realize. The "Ile de France" was the first ocean liner completed after world war one, and served through many years of service on the Atlantic (including as a troop transport during world war two.) Her most famous accomplishment, though, was coming to the aid of the "Andrea Doria" which sank in 1956: "Ile de France" was key to the rescue operation, but was retired and this film was made just four years later.

The film was shot onboard the ship, which is why the sets look so realistic and why the sinking is so realistic (she was actually sunk for the film.) While the plot itself is a bit contrived (really, an acetylene delivery by rowboat?) the story is generally well done and the shots of the ship are magnificent, although the mechanics of the funnel collapse might be questioned by marine architects.

I recommend the film as an above average suspense drama, and especially for the beautiful shots of a magnificent liner in her final days.

5 out of 5 stars We've got the acetelyne tank!!.......2006-08-04

This movie is one of the least known and underrated disaster films of all time. I watched this for the first time back when I was 8 on the matinee movie. I was sick at home with the flu and was so glad I didnt have to watch soaps! Yeccchh! When I saw this on AMC not too long ago I was amazed to see how the movie has held up all these years. The casting is great- first rate. George Sanders plays a solid captain and uses just the right dramatic pauses at the right time. Edmund O'Brien (who is probably the greatest character actor of all time) is the blustery and defiant chief who has his fair share of run-ins with the captain. All the other casting is great as well and the film builds in suspense throughout. I especially like how the movie draws the viewer in immediatly with the opening shot of the captain holding a note which simply says "fire in the engine rooom." This is a fast paced and well crafted movie that is a delight to any disaster film buff. I especially like the scenes when the ships officers are peppering the captain with questions and you can see the captain slowly losing his confidence in his command (and in his ship). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Why is not on DVD.......2006-03-22

I saw this film on a southamerican TV on board a merchant vessel, it take almost all the rest time i have before netx watch because of commercials, 2 hours of commercials, even in such awful conditions I remember that film as something good enough to deserve a DVD edition. Now, that Wolfang Petersen it is about to release a new remake of Poseidon Adventure is a good chance.

4 out of 5 stars The Last Voyage ~ Andrew L. Stone.......2005-10-24

The Last Voyage~ Andrew L. Stone is yet another one of those movies that I first saw on TCM. The storyline is well done and I must say the actors do a very good job and I must say that storyline is so much more realistic then that phoney love story in Titanic. George Sanders is amazing in the role as the power hungry and self-centered captain that takes the sinking of the ship as personal injury rather then a tragedy for all and does everything to make sure that he becomes the hero. Even at the expense of the lives of others. Robert Stack also plays his role well. The little girl is alright and she tends to whine about to much and this sounds a bit unrealistic and she looks way to old to play the role that she has been given and the clothes look silly and just out of place. The special effects are ok, but they do not take away the focus like titanic does. This is a quite good movie that gets the 4 stars that it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Better than you think!.......2005-05-07

This is a well-written and tightly crafted little film. It never pretends to be more than it is about. The film gets right to the dilemma with nearly the opening shot. There are very few special effects as the disaster is real. The real ship is really on fire! No need for CGI smoke and mirrors. George Sanders has a believable and restrained turn as the beleagured captain. Robert Stack is his usual no nonsense good guy. Woody Strode, a good underrated actor, also gives his usual solid bit part.
What I liked most is the look of the film. Its not fake. The action is real because they really did burn the ship. This adds to the excitement and tension. This deserves to be on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH PRAISE TO OUR FIRE-FIGHTERS AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO RISK THEIR LIVES.......2007-06-07

Almost very educational - Yellowstone - Firefighters, their lives and dangers.
I must admit that I bought it because of Scott Foley from [The Unit] but the movie was well worth it.
The dangers are always real just never brought to our attention of all the dangers and risks that these men and women face when the blaze starts to take out millions of acre's of trees and park-lands.

I sure hope that the far shots of the blazes were not real - the up-close shots were too real. It reminds me that we must remember these people in our prayers. And hope that the government agencies are not as stupid and money-grubbing as they sound. [Probably a forlorn hope.]

This movie is Definitely recommended for the more mature audience - and not for some twitchy kid that thinks starting a fire is a lark.

5 out of 5 stars Last Stand at Yellowstone.......2007-05-20

This is an excellent story. Richard Burgi and Scott Foley do a great job in telling of the forest fire fighters and their families. I enjoyed the extras of how Yellowstone was formed as well.

3 out of 5 stars Family Movie.......2006-07-19

It was a pretty fair family movie - some of it was similar to the 80's Harrison Ford movie, "Witness" - The early scenes on the farm (Time for milking) was a direct quote from Witness - even the 430 am getting up time. Anyway, the movie was only 59 minutes long and could have used some better actors, too.

5 out of 5 stars Positive,upbeat,very enjoyable Film!!.......2002-04-13
