When Cheryl (Alexandra Paul) and Greg (Bruce Boxleitner) learn that their daughter has leukemia, they must find her natural father, a violent ex-con, and see if he is a suitable bone-marrow donor. When Kurt (Michael Riley) fails to show up for the blood test, Cheryl finds the body of Kurt's murdered girlfriend in his apartment. It's easy to forget that this Spartan, violent film, which begat the Rambo series, was such a big hit in 1982 because it was a good movie. Green Beret vet John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) wanders into the wrong small town to find a fellow 'Nam buddy and gets the living heck kicked out of him by the local law enforcement (led by Brian Dennehy). The vet strikes back the only way he knows how, leading to a visceral, if unrealistic, flight and fight through the local mountains. Based on the 1972 novel by David Morrell, this film saved Stallone's then-foundering career and the Rambo character became the inspiration for countless political cartoons. But this film is Deliverance without the moral ambiguity. --Keith Simanton

Not what I expected.......2007-05-16

I've grown up with the idea that "Rambo" is just about big explosions and violence, so when I finally got around to watching the first Rambo movie I was shocked to find that it wasn't an all-out action movie but rather a drama and commentary on the effects of war (Vietnam in particular) with action elements. Certainly the series turns into a mindless bullet-fest with the later incarnations (not that there's anything wrong with that), but this first movie is much more than just a mindless action flick.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes a little action with their drama, or anyone who wonders what war can do to a person.

Chilling Acton Triumph.......2007-04-17

This is one of my all time favorite movies. For several years now, my dad and I get together and watch movies like Rambo, Predator, Terminator etc. Anyways, this has been a classic for all of those years, and still holds true. One of things that I found interesting about this film is it's creepy undertone. The way those cops obsessively chase and threaten John Rambo is a mysterious journey into the heart of violent obsession. The action is also top notch, with enough explosions and gun fights to make any adreanline junkie happy. Another strong point is the acting by Stallone which is superb, and the score by Goldsmith that helps make the film classic.

Definately a milestone.

Better than you expect.......2007-04-05

There is a certain amount of cheese to this film, without a doubt, but it doesn't approach the crazy, over the top ridiculousness of the sequels. Plus, it is a film with something to say about the Vietnam vet experience. The message is pretty simplistic, I grant, but worlds deeper than, again, anything in the sequels. It also imparts this message with a minimum of fuss, and without slowing down the story. Good action, decent performances. (Though, upon re-watching, Richard Crenna's performance as Rambo's former commander is very, very odd.) See Rambo when he still had some complexity, and before he became a superhero.

When your only skill is to kill and you have had enough of that, you tend to wander. This is the circumstance in which we find John J. Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) Vietnam vet. Wandering around in his old field jacket he had the misfortune to bump into, of all people the local macho Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy.) It is the sheriff's duty to protect the community from people wondering around in his/her field jacket.

Well push comes to shove when the sheriff verdantly or invariantly draws "First Blood". Now nether one can back down and the whole town and surrounding hills becomes a shooting gallery.

There is only one man who may be able to save the situation if anyone is willing to listen, but will they? Yep its is Rambo's old commander Col. Samuel Trautman well played by Richard Crenna.
